- 0:01Dave Hamilton: Business Brain, episode 778 for Wednesday, August 12th, IBM PC Day, 2026.
- 0:09Dave Hamilton: I know.
- 0:10Shannon Jean: Man, how'd they sneak in here?
- 0:11Dave Hamilton: IBM PC? You know, it's an iconic thing, man. I mean, it changed the world.
- 0:16Shannon Jean: I guess. A little bit. It changed the world. A little bit. Yeah.
- 0:19Dave Hamilton: August 12th, 1981 was the launch of the original IBM PC.
- 0:25Dave Hamilton: So, you know, changed business as we know it. and a lot of other things.
- 0:30Shannon Jean: Even though we're Mac people, I guess you got to at least recognize it. Yeah, for sure.
- 0:37Dave Hamilton: Greetings, folks, and welcome to Business Brain, the show where we take some
- 0:41Dave Hamilton: ideas, we crunch them, we dissect them, we use them to tune our business brains
- 0:46Dave Hamilton: each and every time we get together.
- 0:49Dave Hamilton: Our sponsor for this episode is scribe.how slash brain, where you can mention
- 0:53Dave Hamilton: brain for your first month of Scribe Capture free.
- 0:57Dave Hamilton: We're going to talk about all of that in a little bit in a little more detail
- 1:00Dave Hamilton: for now here in Durham New Hampshire,
- 1:03Dave Hamilton: exciting town of Durham New Hampshire this week I'm Dave Hamilton.
- 1:06Shannon Jean: Yeah. I want to hear what's exciting because I don't know. I'm Shannon Gene.
- 1:10Shannon Jean: I'm coming to you from a little town that nobody knows, sitting out on the back
- 1:13Shannon Jean: deck, hiding behind my giant microphone because Dave made me lift it up higher so I would sound better.
- 1:18Dave Hamilton: So you sound better, yeah.
- 1:19Shannon Jean: Yeah, that's it. I'm glad to be here. What's going on in your town?
- 1:22Shannon Jean: Oh, man. Is there some kind of prime voting thing or something going on?
- 1:25Dave Hamilton: Oh, yeah. I mean, yes. We're starting down that path, I suppose. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:30Dave Hamilton: And actually, I have I have a business lesson to share about that.
- 1:33Dave Hamilton: But no, this week, the town of Durham was on certainly statewide news and even
- 1:41Dave Hamilton: at least regional national news.
- 1:43Dave Hamilton: There was a whole big thing with with one resident of Durham who had been skipping
- 1:49Dave Hamilton: out on bail and and had arrest warrants across multiple states. And it was my neighbor.
- 1:55Shannon Jean: Oh, cool.
- 1:56Dave Hamilton: Literally next door neighbor.
- 1:58Shannon Jean: I was going to make a joke about it being your neighbor But it just falls right down
- 2:01Dave Hamilton: That's crazy We had to evacuate the house yesterday morning We were woken up
- 2:07Dave Hamilton: by the police We had to evacuate the house Because they were going to smoke
- 2:12Dave Hamilton: this guy out Or whatever And,
- 2:14Dave Hamilton: they just didn't want us in harm's way So I was like yeah sure Live.
- 2:18Shannon Jean: Free or die right
- 2:19Dave Hamilton: Well yeah that's more of a command Than a choice You know Yeah.
- 2:26Dave Hamilton: But you mentioned politics and we never talk about politics on the show.
- 2:30Dave Hamilton: So I want to do that right now on our door.
- 2:34Dave Hamilton: We put a sign and I'm going to make sure that I read what what the sign says,
- 2:40Dave Hamilton: correctly, because we are in small town New Hampshire.
- 2:45Dave Hamilton: And so there are times of of not just a year, but, you know,
- 2:50Dave Hamilton: times in the political election cycle where canvassing door to door canvassing is a thing. And it like.
- 2:59Dave Hamilton: There are a few things that I like less than having to answer the door and dispatch
- 3:04Dave Hamilton: with someone that I'm definitely not going to talk with, whether I agree with them or not.
- 3:09Dave Hamilton: It's just not going to happen. Waste of time. Correct. It's a waste of their
- 3:12Dave Hamilton: time in addition to mine.
- 3:14Dave Hamilton: So years ago in 2020, January of 2020, early January of 2020,
- 3:21Dave Hamilton: I put a sign on our door that shortly thereafter became somewhat irrelevant
- 3:25Dave Hamilton: and then became relevant again for different reasons.
- 3:28Dave Hamilton: It says, if you have cookies, please knock. We love them.
- 3:33Dave Hamilton: If you need cookies, please knock and we'll get you some.
- 3:37Dave Hamilton: But if you want to talk politics, please be on your way. We only talk cookies here. Thank you.
- 3:43Dave Hamilton: And I have a little, you know, I put some clip art of a cookie on there,
- 3:46Dave Hamilton: too, because why not? You know, and it works right in so much is that in the
- 3:52Dave Hamilton: last six years, I've seen people walk up to the house and.
- 3:57Dave Hamilton: Stop at the door turn around walk away it's like okay great they get it,
- 4:02Dave Hamilton: and uh the other day you know i don't like leave this i put it right print a
- 4:06Dave Hamilton: new sign every time it needs to happen because you know eventually it's just
- 4:09Dave Hamilton: i just take it it's just a piece of paper it's not like anything special yeah and uh,
- 4:14Dave Hamilton: we had not put the sign up and the door rang the other day and i was like oh
- 4:17Dave Hamilton: crap i'm like so i finished i dispatched with the person politely and,
- 4:22Dave Hamilton: uh and then but but efficiently and then came in the house and said to lisa
- 4:26Dave Hamilton: i'm like all right well i gotta print up the sign so i put the sign on the door
- 4:30Dave Hamilton: and i thought you know i'm gonna post it in our little neighborhood facebook
- 4:33Dave Hamilton: group and so i did and i said tis the season i just left it you know like that,
- 4:38Dave Hamilton: people some people laughed some people obviously most people just ignored it
- 4:40Dave Hamilton: it's fine and somebody asked me does it work,
- 4:43Dave Hamilton: and and they said you know that they they have people with ptsd and when you
- 4:47Dave Hamilton: know random door bell rings kind of freak some of those right family members
- 4:51Dave Hamilton: out and they're like does this work and i'm like oh it absolutely works i said
- 4:54Dave Hamilton: for that it works great i said i am shocked though,
- 4:59Dave Hamilton: that in six years a smart politician has not come by with cookies,
- 5:05Dave Hamilton: yeah obvious like this is the most memorable thing in the world to me.
- 5:09Shannon Jean: Well and you would talk about it all the time
- 5:11Dave Hamilton: Yeah so yesterday morning um i was woken up and i had to put pants on for the
- 5:15Dave Hamilton: police as i already discussed uh this morning the the bell rang before i was out of bed,
- 5:22Dave Hamilton: And I chose not to get up today because I was like, this is not two days in a row.
- 5:26Dave Hamilton: And but the person who came was running for one of our state rep positions from our district.
- 5:38Dave Hamilton: She I believe she might even still be a college student, but that's fine.
- 5:41Dave Hamilton: Yep. Yeah. And I her family. I don't know if they still live in our neighborhood,
- 5:46Dave Hamilton: but they certainly did live in our neighborhood.
- 5:49Dave Hamilton: And she dropped off a bag that said cookies on it,
- 5:54Dave Hamilton: it also had her political flyer strategically positioned to show her face and nothing else initially,
- 6:01Dave Hamilton: and and had some homemade cookies in a tupperware inside the bag smart and it's
- 6:08Dave Hamilton: like she gets it she gets yeah i don't know if i'm gonna vote for this person
- 6:12Dave Hamilton: or not it doesn't matter no no.
- 6:13Shannon Jean: It's irrelevant the takeaway obviously is listen to what people are telling
- 6:18Dave Hamilton: You listen.
- 6:19Shannon Jean: And stand you stand out
- 6:21Dave Hamilton: Six years and no one has thought to do this it's just crazy to me and i don't
- 6:27Dave Hamilton: know if she read my comment where i said it's been six years and no one i said
- 6:31Dave Hamilton: no smart politician has thought to do this,
- 6:34Dave Hamilton: And if she did great, like still listening to your like constituents,
- 6:38Dave Hamilton: like listen to your customers when they tell you, you know, there's that whole,
- 6:42Dave Hamilton: that whole adage. Right. And it's usually said in the negative when somebody
- 6:45Dave Hamilton: tells you who they are, believe them.
- 6:46Dave Hamilton: But in this case, it's the same thing. Just believe them. That's cool.
- 6:50Dave Hamilton: You want me to talk about, and I'm still not talking about her, but that's fine.
- 6:54Dave Hamilton: I did on it. Like in our neighborhood Facebook group, I posted,
- 6:58Dave Hamilton: I'm like, okay, you know, so-and-so get attention, figured it out,
- 7:00Dave Hamilton: paid attention. Absolutely.
- 7:02Shannon Jean: Absolutely. Food is...
- 7:05Dave Hamilton: Food and food. Food is huge. I made it easy. I listed food. Like, this is not hard.
- 7:10Shannon Jean: If your business doesn't have some kind of food reward either for,
- 7:14Shannon Jean: well, both for your clients, customers, but also your employees,
- 7:19Shannon Jean: you're really missing out.
- 7:20Shannon Jean: We've done episodes on the Friday barbecue here, why that's so important, and how it's
- 7:27Shannon Jean: It's a way to, it's a meeting really, but it's so casual that you,
- 7:30Shannon Jean: you know, you keep your ears open and you get to learn a lot about your employees
- 7:34Shannon Jean: and the things that are happening in their lives and their families.
- 7:36Shannon Jean: It's such a huge benefit to your entire organization. I agree. It's amazing.
- 7:40Dave Hamilton: I agree. Yep. So that's my, that's my, uh, unintentional audible lesson.
- 7:46Dave Hamilton: I say audible. Well, for two reasons. A, I communicated it audibly,
- 7:50Dave Hamilton: but it also wasn't audible. It wasn't on the agenda. So there you go. Yeah. Yep.
- 7:53Shannon Jean: That's sweet.
- 7:54Dave Hamilton: Um we have other things to talk about,
- 7:58Dave Hamilton: we do we do we have many other things to talk about i i don't know what of the
- 8:02Dave Hamilton: things what the then i don't know what the um,
- 8:07Dave Hamilton: medium term future will will have for us we'll figure that out uh together we'll
- 8:13Dave Hamilton: figure it out because the next thing that we're going to do is i want to tell you about our sponsor,
- 8:19Dave Hamilton: look here's the thing nobody warns you about when you start building a business.
- 8:24Dave Hamilton: At some point, all your best systems live entirely inside your own head.
- 8:30Dave Hamilton: The charmed life you're building runs on processes that only you fully understand.
- 8:35Dave Hamilton: And the moment you need to hand one off, teach it, or scale it,
- 8:40Dave Hamilton: you're back to square one explaining the same thing from scratch.
- 8:44Dave Hamilton: I ran into this building our podcast network here at Backbeat Media, right?
- 8:48Dave Hamilton: We built a custom podcast management and schedule tracking system from the ground up.
- 8:53Dave Hamilton: It works great, but documenting how to actually use it, that was the part that
- 8:58Dave Hamilton: never got done until Scribe.
- 9:01Dave Hamilton: Scribe is a workflow AI platform trusted by 94% of the Fortune 500 that does
- 9:08Dave Hamilton: something genuinely remarkable.
- 9:10Dave Hamilton: You turn on the browser extension or desktop app, go through a process exactly as you normally would.
- 9:17Dave Hamilton: And Scribe builds the step-by-step guide automatically.
- 9:22Dave Hamilton: Every click, every screenshot captured and formatted without you writing a single word.
- 9:28Dave Hamilton: What used to take hours of documentation work is done the moment you finish the process.
- 9:34Dave Hamilton: And then it gets even better. Anyone following that process gets real-time on-screen
- 9:40Dave Hamilton: guidance inside the actual tool right from the moment the guide is created.
- 9:46Dave Hamilton: Scribe also automatically redacts sensitive information from every screenshot,
- 9:50Dave Hamilton: names, account numbers, emails, so nothing slips through.
- 9:55Dave Hamilton: If you want to see what Scribe could look like for your org,
- 9:58Dave Hamilton: head to scribe.how slash brain and mention brain for your first month of Scribe
- 10:04Dave Hamilton: capture free on select plans.
- 10:07Dave Hamilton: That's S-C-R-I-B-E dot how slash
- 10:10Dave Hamilton: brain. Go check it out. I think you're going to like it as much as I do.
- 10:13Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to Scribe. for sponsoring this episode.
- 10:18Dave Hamilton: All right shannon what's uh what's next on the agenda.
- 10:21Shannon Jean: Yeah next on the agenda is your next business and i'm i uh i'm going to challenge
- 10:27Shannon Jean: our business listeners here to don't wait to charge to start your second business
- 10:34Shannon Jean: your third business whatever it is and
- 10:36Shannon Jean: a lot of you know okay let me Let me back up.
- 10:39Dave Hamilton: Yeah. One of the first. Wait, what, but don't wait. Like there's some amount of time to wait.
- 10:47Shannon Jean: Yeah. Once you have a little bit of time. Okay. You should be thinking about your next thing.
- 10:51Dave Hamilton: Okay.
- 10:52Shannon Jean: That, that's what I, and what I mean by a little bit of time is if,
- 10:55Shannon Jean: if you built up your business and you've delegated and you have people around,
- 10:59Shannon Jean: maybe not people, maybe, I don't know, agents, whatever it is,
- 11:02Shannon Jean: or you've got a team around you and it's, things are doing good.
- 11:05Shannon Jean: And you have a little bit of time and you've ideally listened to the show for
- 11:10Shannon Jean: part of the last 12 years, we've been screaming these things about getting out
- 11:15Shannon Jean: of your business and letting it run and letting your people do the thing.
- 11:18Shannon Jean: If you have some time, don't wait to start the next thing.
- 11:24Shannon Jean: It's that the challenge is to push yourself and don't get complacent and to
- 11:31Shannon Jean: take everything you've learned to start the next thing.
- 11:35Shannon Jean: And it will accelerate much, much faster, right? Sure. Because all the,
- 11:39Shannon Jean: let's say you're your first business and you've got it going and you're great.
- 11:42Shannon Jean: You have a little time. And if you find yourself at your desk or,
- 11:45Shannon Jean: and I'm not saying you should,
- 11:46Shannon Jean: having a business is great so you can spend time with your family and all that
- 11:49Shannon Jean: kind of stuff so i want you to do that that's super important that flexibility right we're
- 11:53Dave Hamilton: Still we're all in on lifestyle businesses here.
- 11:55Shannon Jean: All in on lifestyle yeah but if you're sitting around at night and you don't
- 11:58Shannon Jean: have anything to do and your kids go to bed and you hang out with your spouse
- 12:02Shannon Jean: for a little bit and you have a couple of hours
- 12:05Shannon Jean: you should start your next business okay because it wakes you up it it i think
- 12:12Shannon Jean: and i can only speak to my experience sure it energizes you It challenges you,
- 12:15Shannon Jean: and it opens more neural pathways in your brain
- 12:20Shannon Jean: that will also help your first business, right?
- 12:22Shannon Jean: Because you're going to solve new problems. You're going to have new challenges.
- 12:26Shannon Jean: You're going to meet new people.
- 12:28Shannon Jean: Whether you succeed or fail, you're going to get a lot out of this next thing,
- 12:34Shannon Jean: and you will set a path towards continually reinventing yourself and coming up with the next thing.
- 12:41Shannon Jean: And the first step is the second business. It's, and it could be small.
- 12:46Dave Hamilton: The first step is the second business. I like that.
- 12:48Shannon Jean: Yep. The first step is your second business because you go into it.
- 12:52Shannon Jean: You know, you know a lot more, right?
- 12:53Shannon Jean: You, you, you probably still have your beginner's mindset, which I encourage
- 12:57Shannon Jean: you to try to keep for life.
- 12:59Dave Hamilton: Possible.
- 13:00Shannon Jean: Yes. Possible. Don't become an expert. That's, that's, I don't think that's good.
- 13:03Dave Hamilton: You know, the good news is if you have become an expert, your,
- 13:09Dave Hamilton: beginner's mind is probably around the corner because you'll realize you're
- 13:14Dave Hamilton: not as much of an expert as you thought you were or that it doesn't matter as
- 13:18Dave Hamilton: much as you thought it would.
- 13:19Dave Hamilton: And that the best thing to do is to just like...
- 13:23Dave Hamilton: Embrace your insatiable curiosity that got you into this in the first place.
- 13:28Dave Hamilton: Correct. Because that's where the joy is for me anyway. And I think for most
- 13:33Dave Hamilton: of us, right. That are in this world.
- 13:35Shannon Jean: Yeah. I don't want to be in a maintenance business. That's not my thing.
- 13:38Shannon Jean: I'm an entrepreneur because I like starting things.
- 13:40Dave Hamilton: I want to correct. I want to offer a potential interpretation,
- 13:43Dave Hamilton: correct into what correction to what you said.
- 13:46Dave Hamilton: You said, I don't, it might've been heard that you said, I don't want to be
- 13:49Dave Hamilton: in the maintenance business.
- 13:50Dave Hamilton: Being in a business that performs maintenance tasks is not what Shannon was talking about.
- 13:55Dave Hamilton: No, that's not what I meant. He doesn't want to be in a business that's in maintenance mode. Yes.
- 13:59Shannon Jean: Yeah.
- 14:00Dave Hamilton: I knew what you meant. Yeah.
- 14:01Shannon Jean: Yeah. It doesn't use my skillset as much. So it doesn't need me as much, which is great.
- 14:06Shannon Jean: And it's kind of, you know, my wife was one of the first people that told me
- 14:10Shannon Jean: at one of my first companies, they're like, they don't need you anymore.
- 14:14Shannon Jean: Yeah. You're just in the way that, you know, your entrepreneurial BS is not
- 14:19Shannon Jean: working like you think it is and walking around telling everybody what do you
- 14:23Shannon Jean: want to do what's the next thing and they were like uh we just want to work dude leave us alone
- 14:26Dave Hamilton: Not not everybody thinks this way and that's also okay yeah yeah.
- 14:30Shannon Jean: That's good yeah it would be a nightmare world if everybody thought like we
- 14:32Shannon Jean: did yeah so that pushed me to start my second business and to try new things
- 14:39Shannon Jean: and to build something new and to
- 14:42Shannon Jean: it kept me up at night again right it yeah made me wake up going oh let's do
- 14:47Shannon Jean: this and we, how do we build this?
- 14:49Shannon Jean: And I was excited. And so that excitement, it transferred back to the,
- 14:54Shannon Jean: my first business as well.
- 14:56Shannon Jean: Right. And helped me, you know, be focused on a project and to also,
- 15:02Shannon Jean: it took me a while to give myself permission while I was at my first business
- 15:06Shannon Jean: that I didn't have to be working on it.
- 15:08Shannon Jean: That I could be in my office.
- 15:09Dave Hamilton: I can see that. Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 15:11Shannon Jean: Building the next thing. Because I felt guilty in the beginning.
- 15:13Shannon Jean: I was like, well, all these people are doing all this work. And maybe that's weird. I don't know.
- 15:17Dave Hamilton: No, no. I felt the same thing. You feel an obligation.
- 15:21Dave Hamilton: You do. To either your business partners or your employees. And not really. Or.
- 15:27Dave Hamilton: And your employees. And your vendors.
- 15:30Dave Hamilton: And, you know, when you sum it all together, your business as a whole.
- 15:33Dave Hamilton: It's like, well, if I'm not here.
- 15:34Shannon Jean: First one in.
- 15:35Dave Hamilton: Last one out. Yep.
- 15:38Shannon Jean: No, that's a mistake. And that yokes you to the wheel of the business that'll grind you up.
- 15:44Dave Hamilton: Yep.
- 15:45Shannon Jean: Right? Not to put too fine a point on it, but it can be brutal for an entrepreneur
- 15:50Shannon Jean: that wants to build new things.
- 15:52Shannon Jean: And so my solution, and looking back, of course, I have the luxury of looking back.
- 15:58Dave Hamilton: Yeah.
- 15:59Shannon Jean: Is do the next thing.
- 16:01Dave Hamilton: Yeah. Right.
- 16:01Shannon Jean: The first step is to start your second business. And if you're in the real world
- 16:06Shannon Jean: business where you've got trucks or whatever, and you're in the maintenance
- 16:08Shannon Jean: business, which is great, very profitable plumbing, landscape,
- 16:12Shannon Jean: building, all those things are great businesses, roofing.
- 16:15Shannon Jean: Well, maybe you should build a digital business. Yeah. Maybe you should build
- 16:18Shannon Jean: an agency that could help promote that first business and offer those services
- 16:22Shannon Jean: to other people. Maybe you've learned a lot about Google ads and Facebook marketing.
- 16:27Shannon Jean: Who knows? You could now, oh, I could start something new.
- 16:30Shannon Jean: And pull that little piece of the business at MacRescue when we started decades ago.
- 16:37Shannon Jean: I had no intention of being in the parts business, but that became a new thing.
- 16:42Shannon Jean: And I was like, oh, well, that's a different skill set to sell to other businesses
- 16:46Shannon Jean: and resellers and wholesalers and to get a location in China and all these other
- 16:52Shannon Jean: challenges. It's super powerful.
- 16:55Dave Hamilton: That's how BackBeat started. Like, I mean, if you told me the day before we
- 16:58Dave Hamilton: started Mac Observer that I would be in the publishing, the online publishing
- 17:02Dave Hamilton: business, I would have laughed at you.
- 17:04Dave Hamilton: But then, you know, the next day, this opportunity sort of showed up and a friend
- 17:08Dave Hamilton: of mine kind of talked me into it. It was like, OK, like, that's interesting.
- 17:11Dave Hamilton: Like, how does it make money? OK, advertising.
- 17:14Dave Hamilton: OK, are there some contracts in place? Because we sort of acquired a business
- 17:18Dave Hamilton: that was sort of that was in place already.
- 17:21Dave Hamilton: And it was like, yeah, kind of. But there's it's, you know, under monetized.
- 17:25Dave Hamilton: Okay, great. Like, fine. This is interesting. Sure. And I like the Apple stuff.
- 17:31Dave Hamilton: I was already going to like Macworld Expo as just an attendee,
- 17:35Dave Hamilton: you know, because I wanted to be immersed in that world.
- 17:39Dave Hamilton: So I was like, oh, this would be a cool way to be able to get into parties at
- 17:43Dave Hamilton: Macworld Expo. If we have a publication. Love it.
- 17:47Dave Hamilton: So we did eight months later was when our essentially our competition told us
- 17:53Dave Hamilton: to start backbeat media.
- 17:54Dave Hamilton: I mean, the conversations weren't quite like that, but it basically was that,
- 17:58Dave Hamilton: and the signals, the signals.
- 18:00Dave Hamilton: And it was because in those eight months we had developed a little bit of experience,
- 18:05Dave Hamilton: certainly not expertise, but experience and a willingness to do the job of selling
- 18:10Dave Hamilton: ads and managing servers and all those things that backbeat did in the beginning.
- 18:14Dave Hamilton: Now, BackBee doesn't really do the server management thing as a part of our
- 18:18Dave Hamilton: offering anymore. But, you know, it's like it was all those things.
- 18:22Dave Hamilton: And it was like, yeah, okay. Like, to your point, we had developed this experience,
- 18:27Dave Hamilton: a little bit of expertise perhaps.
- 18:29Dave Hamilton: And it was like, all right, we're moving on.
- 18:31Dave Hamilton: Well, okay. Second business, here we are. Okay.
- 18:34Shannon Jean: That's exactly right.
- 18:36Dave Hamilton: It was petrifying. It seemed silly. Of course. It really did seem silly to start
- 18:41Dave Hamilton: this other thing. I was like, why, guys, I don't know.
- 18:44Shannon Jean: And nothing is sillier than watching me unload designer handbags inside the tech restore
- 18:51Shannon Jean: warehouse with 50 000 iphones and ipads and everything and everybody in the
- 18:56Shannon Jean: warehouse going dude what are you doing yeah yeah yeah
- 19:00Shannon Jean: but you know four million dollars later i learned so much right and it eventually
- 19:05Shannon Jean: led me to to a whole nother business so
- 19:08Shannon Jean: uh starting your second or your third it's such a great uh off-ramp also that
- 19:15Shannon Jean: kind of forces you to give up a little more control than you otherwise would you have
- 19:20Dave Hamilton: To yeah yeah.
- 19:21Shannon Jean: Because to really because once if it gets going because you can experiment and
- 19:25Shannon Jean: you say see how it's working like whoa wow i need to put more energy and time
- 19:27Shannon Jean: into this yeah you have to get yourself out so it requires you to have a good
- 19:32Shannon Jean: general manager operator supervisor whoever yeah and and they'll be the better
- 19:36Shannon Jean: for it because you got out of their way right yep it it helps you move from
- 19:43Shannon Jean: uh a business owner that's created them a job to uh a business owner that has
- 19:48Shannon Jean: multiple businesses to ultimately maybe an investor that owns a bunch of companies
- 19:53Shannon Jean: and real estate or whatever it's a great path and i highly recommend it
- 19:57Shannon Jean: it it's it worked wonders for me
- 19:59Dave Hamilton: I like it it's good advice that's good advice so um speaking of advice what
- 20:03Dave Hamilton: is the big takeaway of this episode i to me we have perhaps three things,
- 20:09Dave Hamilton: uh okay what are they the first and i'm just going in order the first is listen
- 20:14Dave Hamilton: to your customers four things actually listen to your customers,
- 20:18Dave Hamilton: use food rewards,
- 20:20Dave Hamilton: The first step is to start your second business and embrace your insatiable curiosity.
- 20:26Dave Hamilton: Which of those four resonates with you when I say them, Shannon?
- 20:29Dave Hamilton: I know which one resonates with me.
- 20:31Shannon Jean: I think for me, it's the curiosity part. Yeah, same. Because that's the driver
- 20:35Shannon Jean: of everything. So, you know, get you to, what would happen if I barbecued for
- 20:40Shannon Jean: my people? What would happen if we fed our clients? What would happen if I started another business?
- 20:44Shannon Jean: What would happen if I started the podcast? All those things.
- 20:47Shannon Jean: Here we are. That's right. Here we are, 12 years later. And it started the same way.
- 20:52Shannon Jean: So that's the takeaway. What you can also get all about starting your second
- 20:58Shannon Jean: business, if you go to businessbrain.show slash blueprints,
