Transcript
- 0:07Suze: October 18th, 2026. Welcome everybody to the Women in Money
- 0:12Suze: podcast and everybody smart enough to listen. Right around now, Ms.
- 0:17Suze: Travis and I are on our way back from Paris, right?
- 0:22Suze: And before that we were in Nairobi. Before that we
- 0:27Suze: were in Istanbul, and before that we were in LA.
- 0:31Suze: So I'm sure we are thrilled to be making our
- 0:34Suze: way home.
- 0:35Suze: But before we left, we promised all of you that
- 0:39Suze: on Sundays you would have a brand new podcast from us,
- 0:44Suze: and we keep our promise. So Ms. Travis, what do
- 0:48Suze: you have in store for us today?
- 0:49KT: This is special. This is a different podcast. Why? Because
- 0:54KT: we're gonna actually tell one story. So a few weeks ago,
- 0:59KT: some of you that were listening heard me get a
- 1:01KT: little weepy and I started crying.
- 1:03KT: Because I often wish you knew what Suze does and
- 1:08KT: the time, the effort, the work, and really how she
- 1:12KT: pours her heart into these responses. She doesn't respond to
- 1:17KT: every question or every email...
- 1:20Suze: Not even close,
- 1:21KT: ...but when one comes in where she feels she really
- 1:24KT: wants to make a difference, and needs to make a difference, she
- 1:28KT: will respond, and this is one of them.
- 1:30Suze: Now, before you start, normally I respond seriously, everybody, when
- 1:35Suze: I know somebody's about to make a big, big mistake.
- 1:39Suze: Number one, or somebody just lost a spouse or is
- 1:44Suze: ill or really, really needs help. But when I see
- 1:48Suze: somebody about to get a large amount of money and
- 1:53Suze: they are about to blow it. I respond. So Ms. Travis...
- 1:57KT: She steps in hard. So here you go, everybody. We
- 2:01KT: actually are gonna hold back the names out of respect.
- 2:04KT: They didn't ask us to, but we wish to, um,
- 2:07KT: just share this as a generic response.
- 2:10Suze: And just so you know what you can expect, KT
- 2:12Suze: will read the original email with some editing, obviously. I
- 2:17Suze: will read my response to that email. Then KT will
- 2:22Suze: read the person's response to my email, and then finally
- 2:27Suze: my response so that you can see the story and
- 2:32Suze: the progression that people can make when the correct information
- 2:37Suze: is provided to them, Ms. Travis, go for it.
- 2:40KT: OK, here we go. So we received this. And it said, Suze,
- 2:44KT: I never imagined that one of the hardest experiences of
- 2:48KT: my life would leave me with $1 million and absolutely
- 2:54KT: no idea what to do with it. I recently received
- 2:58KT: a settlement of approximately $1.1 million and everyone, that's after
- 3:04KT: the fees and taxes were paid as a result of
- 3:07KT: a lawsuit involving the loss of all 16 of our embryos.
- 3:13KT: But the reality is that this settlement has completely changed
- 3:18KT: my family's financial situation almost overnight and honestly, Suze, I
- 3:24KT: have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
- 3:28KT: So everyone listening, I edited quite a bit of the
- 3:31KT: background out and now I'm just gonna get to the
- 3:34KT: gist of what is going on here with this family.
- 3:38KT: So then she said, I find myself struggling with what
- 3:41KT: to do next. I wanna help the people I love.
- 3:45KT: I want my sister to have a safe and stable home.
- 3:49KT: I would love to be able to help my family
- 3:51KT: and some of my close friends in ways that I
- 3:54KT: never could before, but at the same time I know
- 3:58KT: that there has to be a boundary.
- 4:02KT: So that is why I'm reaching out to you. I
- 4:05KT: know you have had your own experiences with significant amounts
- 4:09KT: of money and have probably learned things that most people
- 4:12KT: never have to think about.
- 4:14KT: Suze, if you could go back to the moment you
- 4:17KT: had your first million dollars, knowing everything that you know now,
- 4:22KT: what would you do differently? How much would you invest?
- 4:26KT: How much would you keep completely safe and accessible? What
- 4:30KT: would you spend on your home and family? What would
- 4:33KT: you absolutely not spend money on?
- 4:37KT: Did you work with a financial advisor, a CPA, an attorney,
- 4:41KT: or someone else you trusted? Most importantly, what mistakes did
- 4:46KT: you make that you wish you could go back and avoid?
- 4:50KT: So everyone, I think these were great questions that she
- 4:53KT: came up with. And then she closes with, I'm just
- 4:56KT: a woman from a small town who never expected to
- 5:00KT: have this problem in the first place. Funny, Suze, she
- 5:04KT: calls it a problem.
- 5:06KT: I went from spending most of my life worrying about
- 5:09KT: having enough money to suddenly having more money than I
- 5:12KT: have ever had, and I'm honestly a little scared of
- 5:16KT: getting it wrong. I do not want this money to
- 5:19KT: change who we are. I want it to give us options, security,
- 5:25KT: and the ability to do some good for the people
- 5:27KT: we love. So Suze, if you were standing where I
- 5:30KT: am right now, what is the one thing you would
- 5:34KT: tell me?
- 5:35KT: And then she said, even a few sentences of advice
- 5:38KT: would mean more to me than you probably realize. Thank
- 5:42KT: you so much for taking the time to read my story. Well, everyone,
- 5:47KT: Suze did a little more than a few sentences. So now, Suze,
- 5:51KT: let's share what you wrote back to this, um, listener.
- 5:55Suze: Yeah, before I begin with that though, KT, I just
- 5:58Suze: want to say to everybody, obviously when I made my
- 6:01Suze: first million, I was in a very different situation.
- 6:04Suze: In that I was and am a financial adviser. I
- 6:08Suze: know all about taxes. I know everything I needed to
- 6:12Suze: do to take care of it. And so it was
- 6:16Suze: a little bit different for me than truly most everybody else.
- 6:20Suze: But here's what I wrote back: First, I am so
- 6:24Suze: sorry for what you and your husband have been through.
- 6:27Suze: No amount of money could ever make up for the
- 6:29Suze: loss you experienced, and I understand exactly why you want
- 6:34Suze: something good and lasting to come from it, but I
- 6:37Suze: need you to hear me and hear me carefully. Do
- 6:41Suze: nothing quickly. This is the one thing I would tell you.
- 6:45Suze: You have spent most of your life without money, and
- 6:49Suze: suddenly you have 1.1 million.
- 6:52Suze: That can make you feel as though you can finally
- 6:55Suze: take care of everybody you love, but you cannot, not yet.
- 7:01Suze: You said something in your letter that tells me you
- 7:05Suze: already understand the most important truth. There is no second
- 7:09Suze: million coming, so this money has to last. Before you
- 7:14Suze: buy your sister's house, help friends, give money away, or
- 7:18Suze: make any other major financial decision.
- 7:22Suze: I want you to protect you and your husband first.
- 7:27Suze: You are considering a $399,000 home. If you pay cash
- 7:32Suze: for that house and then pay off both vehicles, you
- 7:36Suze: may immediately use close to 40% of this money. That
- 7:42Suze: completely changes the picture.
- 7:44Suze: So I would not make an offer on that house
- 7:47Suze: until you have sat down and looked at your entire
- 7:51Suze: financial life. How much do you both earn? How much
- 7:56Suze: will your husband eventually receive from the military? What will
- 8:00Suze: his health situation mean? How much do you have in
- 8:04Suze: retirement accounts? How much do you spend every month?
- 8:08Suze: How much will this new house cost you every year
- 8:11Suze: for property taxes, insurance, maintenance, and repairs? Those numbers matter
- 8:17Suze: far more than the fact that you have 1.1 million
- 8:21Suze: sitting in an account today. Please do not buy your
- 8:24Suze: sister a house right now. I understand why you want to.
- 8:29Suze: I love the generosity behind it, but generosity without financial
- 8:33Suze: boundaries can destroy your own security.
- 8:37Suze: So for at least the next year I would make
- 8:40Suze: a rule: no large gifts to anybody. You can always
- 8:46Suze: give money later. You cannot always get it back. For now,
- 8:51Suze: I would keep your money somewhere extremely safe while you
- 8:54Suze: make your decisions, insured savings, Treasury bills, or other appropriate
- 8:59Suze: short-term Treasury securities not sitting in a checking account where
- 9:03Suze: it feels available to spend.
- 9:06Suze: Then I would build your own financial foundation. I would
- 9:10Suze: make sure you have a substantial emergency fund. I would
- 9:14Suze: make sure both of you are properly protected with the
- 9:18Suze: must-have documents, a will, revocable living trust, durable financial powers
- 9:23Suze: of attorney and advance directives. I would review your insurance coverage.
- 9:28Suze: I would maximize the retirement opportunities available to both of you.
- 9:33Suze: And only after I knew exactly what you needed to
- 9:36Suze: secure your own future would I determine how much of
- 9:40Suze: anything you could afford to give away. As for investing,
- 9:45Suze: please do not hand this entire amount to someone simply
- 9:49Suze: because they call themselves a financial adviser.
- 9:52Suze: Anyone you work with should be someone you fully understand
- 9:56Suze: whose fees you fully understand and who is legally required
- 10:00Suze: to put your interests first. You do not need to
- 10:03Suze: turn 1.1 million into 10 million. You need to make
- 10:07Suze: sure 1.1 million does not turn into zero. There is
- 10:12Suze: another mistake I want you to avoid, do not let
- 10:15Suze: everybody know you have this money.
- 10:18Suze: Money changes relationships. People may not consciously mean to treat
- 10:23Suze: you differently, but suddenly their emergency can become your emergency.
- 10:29Suze: Their dream can become something they think that you can finance.
- 10:34Suze: And because you remember what it was like to struggle,
- 10:37Suze: saying no may feel terrible. You are going to have
- 10:40Suze: to learn to say no. That does not make you selfish.
- 10:44Suze: It makes you responsible.
- 10:47Suze: Some day when you know that your own future is
- 10:50Suze: completely secure, you may decide that helping your sister purchase
- 10:53Suze: a home is exactly what you want to do. If
- 10:57Suze: that day comes, you can do it from a position
- 11:01Suze: of strength rather than emotion, and yes, you should enjoy
- 11:06Suze: some of this money.
- 11:07Suze: Choose an amount that will not change your future and
- 11:10Suze: give yourself permission to enjoy it without guilt. Take a trip.
- 11:14Suze: Do something meaningful with your husband. Create a memory, but
- 11:19Suze: understand the difference between enjoying money and changing your lifestyle.
- 11:24Suze: The first can bring you joy. The second can eat
- 11:28Suze: through 1 million far faster than you can imagine.
- 11:33Suze: You asked what I wish someone had told me when
- 11:35Suze: I first had money. Here it is. Money should give
- 11:39Suze: you freedom. The goal of money is to be secure.
- 11:44Suze: It should never give you obligations you did not have before.
- 11:48Suze: You do not owe everybody a better life because something
- 11:53Suze: terrible happened to you and you received this settlement.
- 11:57Suze: Your responsibility now is to take this money that came
- 12:02Suze: from such profound pain.
- 12:05Suze: And make sure it protects you and your husband for
- 12:08Suze: the rest of your lives. So for the next 12 months,
- 12:12Suze: slow down. Protect it. And learn.
- 12:19KT: OK. Now, ready for her response to Suze after that
- 12:25KT: amazing advice? Suze, thank you so much for the insight.
- 12:31KT: I am definitely going to follow this and see where
- 12:33KT: it takes us. Your advice speaks so much louder than
- 12:37KT: my friend's opinions, and I'm so grateful for your response.
- 12:42KT: I want to make this stretch out as much as
- 12:44KT: possible and take care of all of our needs and
- 12:48KT: build us a firm foundation for the rest of our lives.
- 12:52KT: You asked how much we both earn. I am an
- 12:54KT: administrator for a church. I work for $22 an hour,
- 13:00KT: $3,000 a month take home after taxes, no benefits, nothing extra.
- 13:06KT: My husband is in the Navy. He currently is at
- 13:09KT: E6 pay, around $6,600 a month. Current combined monthly take-home
- 13:17KT: is $9,600 a month.
- 13:20KT: His current health has baffled the doctors. His labs are
- 13:24KT: all clear. No clotting factors. No high blood pressure. He's
- 13:28KT: even lost about 60 pounds and started a healthier lifestyle
- 13:33KT: after his health scare. So currently he's unable to go
- 13:38KT: back to deployment on the submarine due to the risk
- 13:42KT: of the pancreas flaring up and causing that same issue
- 13:46KT: that inflamed all of his organs last year and almost
- 13:50KT: took his life, so basically he's a liability for the
- 13:55KT: rest of his career.
- 13:57KT: So it's KT. I just want to clarify what her
- 14:00KT: husband went through. He had pancreitis which put him in
- 14:05KT: a coma for three months. He and all of his
- 14:09KT: organs shut down. This guy like almost died, so he
- 14:12KT: came out of it and that's why she's giving Suze
- 14:16KT: an update as to his health now.
- 14:19KT: But she also said, I do not have a retirement
- 14:22KT: account at all, Suze. He does, but I'm not sure
- 14:26KT: what's even in there. That's something I've never even thought
- 14:30KT: to look at. So she took the time, everyone, to
- 14:33KT: go through all of her expenses. She itemized everything with
- 14:38KT: great care and I have to say with great detail.
- 14:41KT: So Suze, we spend on average, about 6,175 to $7,400
- 14:49KT: a month. We both have savings, $10,000 in each of
- 14:54KT: our accounts, which we do not touch. That's for our
- 14:58KT: emergencies only. So they're both responsible folks anyway, she said
- 15:03KT: after paying off our vehicles 18k and 22k, and owning
- 15:08KT: a home outright, our monthly spending will decrease from $2,600
- 15:14KT: to $3,755 a month for all of our bills combined,
- 15:19KT: leaving us, she said, leaving us with $7,000 to $5,800
- 15:25KT: a month left over, which should be more than enough
- 15:29KT: to put back some into the account with the remaining
- 15:33KT: settlement balance and not touch it at all.
- 15:36KT: So I'm thinking to put this in some type of
- 15:39KT: account that pulls a high interest, right? And then she said, Suze,
- 15:43KT: thank you for taking the time to talk with me,
- 15:46KT: walk me through these steps. I'm so thankful for you
- 15:50KT: sharing your knowledge. Again, this is something I never thought
- 15:54KT: would be possible, so I never did the homework on
- 15:57KT: it until now. Thank you, Suze. We love you.
- 16:02Suze: However, everybody. It didn't end there for me because the
- 16:07Suze: biggest mistake that people make is when they think they
- 16:11Suze: know and I know they don't know. They think they
- 16:15Suze: know what their expenses are going to be. They think
- 16:17Suze: they know what their future holds. They think they know
- 16:20Suze: they're going to be healthy forever. They think all of
- 16:23Suze: these things and they make a plan based on hope
- 16:27Suze: versus reality of what's possible and most likely probable.
- 16:33Suze: So, I wrote back for one last time, right? And
- 16:39Suze: if I'm answered after this, KT, I'm not answering again.
- 16:42KT: OK. All right, this is the finale, everyone.
- 16:46Suze: Right, because it concerned me that a little knowledge can
- 16:50Suze: be dangerous. It can be dangerous when you think you know.
- 16:55KT: Can I, can I tell you what the keyword was
- 16:58KT: that both of us looked at each other like, uh oh,
- 17:01KT: red flag when she said: after all of our bills combined,
- 17:05KT: leaving us with $7,000 to $5,800 a month left over,
- 17:13KT: it was the leftover. When it comes to money, I
- 17:15KT: don't think there's leftovers, right, Suze?
- 17:17Suze: And it's interesting because we always think we have more
- 17:22Suze: is that after taxes, before taxes. What are the tax
- 17:26Suze: brackets going to be? What kind of money do you
- 17:28Suze: need for emergencies, all those things. So, the real red
- 17:32Suze: flags for me came up, KT, where it was like,
- 17:35Suze: we only have $10,000 each in an emergency fund.
- 17:39KT: OK, so what, what's, what's the finale here?
- 17:42Suze: So this is what I sent back, everybody.
- 17:46Suze: Thank you for sending me all this. Now I can
- 17:50Suze: give you much more specific advice, and oh, trust me,
- 17:53Suze: I did. All right. The first thing I want to
- 17:56Suze: tell you is this. Obviously you are in a far
- 18:00Suze: better position than you think you are if you do
- 18:02Suze: this correctly, but I want to correct one assumption. Do
- 18:07Suze: not build your financial future around what you think your
- 18:13Suze: husband is going to receive from military retirement and VA disability,
- 18:20Suze: his military retirement may be predictable based on his service,
- 18:25Suze: but his VA disability rating has not even been determined yet.
- 18:30Suze: So until money is actually guaranteed, I don't want you
- 18:35Suze: spending as though it is. Now let's talk about this
- 18:39Suze: 1.1 million.
- 18:40Suze: I understand why you want to buy the $399,000 house
- 18:45Suze: for cash and pay off the approximately $40,000 you owe
- 18:49Suze: on the vehicles. Given your income, the size of the settlement,
- 18:53Suze: I can understand doing it.
- 18:55Suze: It would leave you, as I told you before, with
- 18:58Suze: roughly $660,000 while eliminating your largest debts, but don't fool
- 19:05Suze: yourself into thinking.
- 19:07Suze: You know what a new home will cost. You know
- 19:11Suze: what your insurance will be. You know what your property
- 19:14Suze: taxes will be, even though it's a home that you
- 19:17Suze: told us in your email that's only two years old.
- 19:20Suze: You don't know what that really means. Does your roof leak?
- 19:23Suze: Did they build it in not a great way? You
- 19:26Suze: have no idea, and I'm here to tell you homes
- 19:31Suze: need maintenance. Insurance premiums go up.
- 19:35Suze: Property taxes can change. Appliances break. Roofs eventually need replacing.
- 19:43Suze: So I want a separate house reserve built into your plan.
- 19:48Suze: And for that separate house reserve, I would put away
- 19:51Suze: at least $1,000 a month into a maintenance plan to
- 19:58Suze: keep the house like it should be kept.
- 20:01Suze: Now your next assignment is something you admitted you have
- 20:05Suze: never even looked at.
- 20:07Suze: I want you to find out exactly what your husband
- 20:11Suze: has in his thrift savings plan. I want you to
- 20:15Suze: know the balance, what he is contributing, whether those contributions
- 20:19Suze: are traditional or wroth, what funds the money is invested in,
- 20:25Suze: and whether he is receiving the full government match available
- 20:29Suze: to him. And you, what about you? You need to
- 20:33Suze: start saving for retirement.
- 20:36Suze: At $22 an hour with no workplace retirement, you both
- 20:41Suze: should be funding a Roth IRA to the max you
- 20:45Suze: need besides the $10,000 each in an emergency fund, you
- 20:50Suze: need one year of expenses in an emergency fund, and
- 20:55Suze: I don't want your entire retirement future dependent upon your
- 21:00Suze: husband's military benefit or this settlement.
- 21:05Suze: I told you in your last email, you need a trust,
- 21:09Suze: a will, all those things you need to get the
- 21:12Suze: must-have documents, especially because your husband is prone to illness.
- 21:18Suze: You need to protect yourself. How are you going to
- 21:20Suze: title this new house that you buy?
- 21:23Suze: Is it going to be a joint tenancy with right
- 21:25Suze: of survivorship, and then then are you going to have
- 21:28Suze: it in a trust? What are you going to do
- 21:30Suze: that way? You have to get your affairs in order today,
- 21:35Suze: especially because of your husband's potential illness. That's probably far
- 21:41Suze: more important than you trying to figure out if you
- 21:44Suze: can buy your sister a house or not.
- 21:48Suze: Now listen to me: For the next year, I want
- 21:54Suze: you to automatically save $7,000 a month. You told me
- 22:01Suze: that after buying the house and paying off the cars,
- 22:05Suze: you could have approximately 6,000 to $7,000 left a month. Wonderful.
- 22:11Suze: I now need you to prove it for the next year.
- 22:15Suze: I want you to automatically save that money every month.
- 22:20Suze: Don't just tell yourself this is what you could save.
- 22:23Suze: I want to see you actually do it. You need
- 22:27Suze: to see that you can actually do it, because if
- 22:30Suze: you can live happily on your income after eliminating those
- 22:34Suze: payments and consistently saving 5,000 or 6,000 every month without
- 22:39Suze: touching the settlement, then we know this money really can
- 22:43Suze: become the foundation of your future.
- 22:46Suze: But guess what, yep, I still do not want you
- 22:50Suze: buying your sister a house, not yet. Promise me that
- 22:55Suze: you will give yourself one full year. Learn how it
- 23:00Suze: feels to own your home outright.
- 23:02Suze: Learn your real expenses. Find out what your husband's military
- 23:07Suze: future looks like. Start your retirement savings. Understand his TSP,
- 23:14Suze: and again get your must-have documents in order. If one
- 23:19Suze: year from now, two years from now, everything is working beautifully,
- 23:25Suze: then you can revisit what you can afford to do
- 23:28Suze: for your sister.
- 23:29Suze: One more thing, please don't let the $660,000 just sit
- 23:35Suze: in savings forever because you are afraid to invest it.
- 23:40Suze: Safety is appropriate while you're making these decisions, but at
- 23:44Suze: your ages, keeping hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash
- 23:48Suze: for decades creates another risk. Inflation will slowly destroy its
- 23:54Suze: purchasing power.
- 23:56Suze: Eventually you need to decide how much stays safe, how
- 24:00Suze: much is for emergencies and near term needs, and how
- 24:03Suze: much should be invested for your long term future. You
- 24:07Suze: do not have to figure that out today. Right now
- 24:10Suze: your job is much simpler. Buy nothing else. Give nothing away.
- 24:16Suze: Learn exactly what you own. Start funding your retirement. Keep
- 24:21Suze: the remaining settlement safe and prove to yourself for one
- 24:25Suze: year that you can live on your income without using
- 24:29Suze: this settlement money. You may be overwhelmed right now, and
- 24:34Suze: it's actually far better than being overconfident. Overconfidence is how
- 24:40Suze: people make enormous mistakes with sudden money.
- 24:44Suze: You don't need to know everything today. You just need
- 24:47Suze: to make sure you don't do something today that you
- 24:51Suze: will wish you could undo tomorrow. Take care of yourself
- 24:56Suze: and have a great life.
- 25:00KT: Amen to that, Suze. Can you imagine, everyone, if she
- 25:07KT: and her husband follow this? Wow, they will be set
- 25:11KT: for life and they'll be proud of themselves.
- 25:14Suze: But the main reason why KT presented this idea to me.
- 25:18Suze: I wanted to do it because so many of you
- 25:23Suze: are paralyzed when you don't have any money, and sometimes
- 25:27Suze: I have to tell you the truth, not having money
- 25:29Suze: and not having to deal with it and being like
- 25:31Suze: everybody else around you who doesn't have money can sometimes
- 25:35Suze: be easier.
- 25:36Suze: But if you happen to live a lifestyle where most
- 25:39Suze: people around you don't have money, they're making it paycheck
- 25:43Suze: to paycheck, and then you inherit money or you get
- 25:48Suze: money from something, it doesn't matter what, and you have
- 25:51Suze: a whole lot of money. The money produces such guilt
- 25:56Suze: it's not even funny, and it is that guilt.
- 26:01Suze: That can make it, so that you want to give
- 26:04Suze: away all this money, you want to get rid of it,
- 26:06Suze: cause you're more comfortable being like everybody else, versus being
- 26:11Suze: financially better off than everybody.
- 26:15Suze: Everybody has their own life in terms of what they
- 26:19Suze: need to learn about who they are, and there is
- 26:24Suze: no better teacher in life than money.
- 26:28Suze: So, keep your money safe when you get it. Keep
- 26:32Suze: it where you don't make any moves with it, and
- 26:35Suze: never let fear, shame, or anger control what you do
- 26:41Suze: with your money.
- 26:43Suze: So next Sunday we will be back and we will
- 26:46Suze: tell you about everything that has happened to us during
- 26:50Suze: this time that we've been away. I'm sure it has
- 26:52Suze: been incredible, totally different for us. We're all doing what
- 26:56Suze: KT we're doing this entire trip with a carry on.
- 26:58KT: One carry on each.
- 27:01Suze: That's it. That's it.
- 27:03KT: When we send photos or post them, we're gonna have
- 27:06KT: the same outfit on.
- 27:07Suze: No matter what. All right, but until then there's only
- 27:11Suze: one thing that we really want you to remember when
- 27:13Suze: it comes to your money, Ms. Travis, go for it.
- 27:16KT: People first, which means you, then money, then things.
- 27:21Suze: Now you stay safe.
