- 2:29Speaker 2: Text three zero four nine three five five zero zero,
- 2:32Speaker 2: Welcome to the show. Now, Republican State Senator Eric Tarr,
- 2:36Speaker 2: how you doing, my friend.
- 2:37Speaker 5: I'm doing fantastic.
- 2:38Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:38Speaker 2: First of all, I'm gonna let you do a little
- 2:41Speaker 2: proud brother stuff and get it out of the way.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Your brother Travis, head basketball coach Winfield High School, big
- 2:47Speaker 2: win last night in the tournament over Ripley the General's
- 2:50Speaker 2: advance to the next round. And I know siblings or siblings,
- 2:53Speaker 2: I understand. I got I got a sibling too, I
- 2:56Speaker 2: completely understand. But I know you're proud of your brother,
- 2:58Speaker 2: So do the right thing.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Okay, Hey, hey, you beat me to it.
- 3:01Speaker 5: I was, I was going there anyway. I was gonna
- 3:03Speaker 5: lead that off that way. I tell you what. It's Uh,
- 3:06Speaker 5: they're they're having storybooks season really are and so happy
- 3:09Speaker 5: for Ty to get out there. That's such a big
- 3:12Speaker 5: deal to see him out there playing that all the
- 3:15Speaker 5: friends and family. Winfield was out, huge crowd, the Ripley
- 3:21Speaker 5: Vikings brought it. I mean it was you know that
- 3:23Speaker 5: they brought a game to him. It was and most
- 3:26Speaker 5: of the town again, most of the town. Yeah, absolutely,
- 3:29Speaker 5: they travel well, they really really do. It was fun.
- 3:31Speaker 5: It was fun. But uh, the interview they did. W
- 3:33Speaker 5: S a Z did an interview with him after after
- 3:36Speaker 5: the game. It was a good little interview and uh,
- 3:38Speaker 5: Travis just knocked it out of the park that the
- 3:39Speaker 5: whole team did, the whole town did, the community did. Uh,
- 3:42Speaker 5: it's it's a life experience, I would say. Last night.
- 3:46Speaker 5: And and we got Chapmanville coming up Friday, so I think
- 3:50Speaker 5: that's gonna be another slug fest as well. And I've
- 3:52Speaker 5: got a great shot there too. So he coaches well,
- 3:55Speaker 5: he's he's he's a natural born leader when you put
- 3:57Speaker 5: him on a court, and so and it showed when
- 3:59Speaker 5: he was win in the prep series and it shows
- 4:01Speaker 5: me he's downt Winfield. So teaching young men to be boys.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Well, and I know what you meant, all right. So
- 4:07Speaker 2: Metro News Midday y afterday, we interviewed the young man's parents
- 4:10Speaker 2: on the show. Yes, they got a chance to talk
- 4:11Speaker 2: to them on the show yesterday, and uh, what great
- 4:14Speaker 2: people that they that that they appear to be. It's
- 4:17Speaker 2: no wonder that that he is such a good young man.
- 4:20Speaker 2: When we talked to his parents yesterday, the apple didn't
- 4:23Speaker 2: fall far from the proverbial tree area.
- 4:25Speaker 5: No, they're great family, they really are. They're they're active
- 4:27Speaker 5: in the community down there. They're active in out the
- 4:29Speaker 5: school and through the town. So and having that that
- 4:33Speaker 5: community service aspect of that family bleeds over into tie
- 4:37Speaker 5: and and really there's so many families like that on
- 4:40Speaker 5: that basketball team where basketball is important, but it's not
- 4:45Speaker 5: their entire life. It's not the most important thing. It's
- 4:47Speaker 5: it's it's it's really about you know, being being there
- 4:51Speaker 5: for your fellow man is really a theme down there
- 4:54Speaker 5: on that team and in that community. So it's this
- 4:57Speaker 5: strong network down there. It's those people are incredible.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Well, and these kids from what what your brother has
- 5:03Speaker 2: told me, these kids have been playing together since they
- 5:06Speaker 2: were kids. They're kids now, but when they since they
- 5:08Speaker 2: were little kids. I mean the entire and it's an
- 5:10Speaker 2: entire community of people from there that have that have
- 5:16Speaker 2: just geled together. They're a young team. Yeah, the thing
- 5:18Speaker 2: is that they're your team. Very I think they got
- 5:21Speaker 2: one senior on the team. Yeah, and he's playing freshman
- 5:24Speaker 2: sophomores out there.
- 5:25Speaker 6: You know.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Throughout the game. Uh, they're playing with incredible confidence. The
- 5:28Speaker 5: confidence on those those kids out there where it's it's
- 5:31Speaker 5: incredible to me. They'll drop a three point shot from
- 5:35Speaker 5: forty feet out, go off the rim, and come right
- 5:37Speaker 5: back and drop another one, you know. So it's it's
- 5:39Speaker 5: just no no hesitation, and so that that kind of
- 5:43Speaker 5: confidence is you know, you have to learn that. You
- 5:47Speaker 5: learn that from family. You learn that from knowing the
- 5:49Speaker 5: mistakes are okay, you know, so you can go in
- 5:51Speaker 5: and make a mistake. It doesn't in the world to
- 5:53Speaker 5: come back and you try again. They exemplify that.
- 5:56Speaker 7: It was.
- 5:56Speaker 2: It was fun to watch, and they've got a tough
- 5:59Speaker 2: matchup against Appmanville Regional coming up tomorrow. That's gonna be
- 6:03Speaker 2: a heck of a game. Coach Napper. I've known coach
- 6:05Speaker 2: Napper for a number of years and he's got he's
- 6:07Speaker 2: got a great ball team down there.
- 6:09Speaker 5: They do they do, and that's one in talking to Travis,
- 6:11Speaker 5: they think they had three losses this season, and the
- 6:14Speaker 5: one I think he was most upset over coming back
- 6:17Speaker 5: when he's just coming back to the house and you
- 6:18Speaker 5: get Travis and we're just talking brother or brother at
- 6:20Speaker 5: Chattmanville loss was the one that really burned him up
- 6:22Speaker 5: the most. And so I tell you what, they're coming
- 6:25Speaker 5: back with some mattitude. It'll it's gonna be a fun game.
- 6:27Speaker 2: It should be. It's just been a great tournament. I mean,
- 6:30Speaker 2: you know, we're only in into the third day and
- 6:33Speaker 2: of course we're going to have we got local teams
- 6:35Speaker 2: in it, Riverside and we'll talk about this a little
- 6:38Speaker 2: bit later on Riverside making their first appearance in the
- 6:41Speaker 2: tournament since two thousand and two. So that's a great story.
- 6:45Speaker 2: G W just had been playing lights out all season.
- 6:48Speaker 2: They're the top seed in quiet A. They play later
- 6:50Speaker 2: today and so it's just been a great I love
- 6:53Speaker 2: the State Tournament. I mean I really really do. My
- 6:55Speaker 2: logan Wildcats fell last night, you know, they got they
- 6:58Speaker 2: got beat by Wyoming East, a very very good team.
- 7:01Speaker 8: Uh.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But overall just just from just just some great games.
- 7:04Speaker 3: You know.
- 7:04Speaker 5: And what impressed me around that game I got I
- 7:06Speaker 5: was there for that game as well, for the second
- 7:07Speaker 5: half of it. The sportsmanship. You know, when you're you're
- 7:10Speaker 5: sitting sitting over in a corner, and so you had
- 7:13Speaker 5: a little bit from each team around you everywhere, and
- 7:15Speaker 5: which is which is happened state terms, because you kind
- 7:17Speaker 5: of move around a lot in the civic center, which
- 7:18Speaker 5: is a great thing to be able to do. But
- 7:21Speaker 5: the parents and the families that were their friends and
- 7:23Speaker 5: all those from everybody knows each other from each community.
- 7:26Speaker 5: I mean you see them coming over and saying, Hi,
- 7:27Speaker 5: I haven't seen you in a while, and you hear
- 7:28Speaker 5: these conversations happening, people chit chatting, and it's fun. It's
- 7:32Speaker 5: it's kind of almost a big family re union of
- 7:33Speaker 5: these state ternments when you pull West Virginia together.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Well, and what's changed since back in the days when
- 7:38Speaker 2: you and I were in school was some many of
- 7:40Speaker 2: these kids. There's a lot more camps available now, there's
- 7:43Speaker 2: a lot more travel, ball and things like that. So
- 7:45Speaker 2: and the internet, you know everybody's friends or whatever you
- 7:48Speaker 2: know on on social media, So it's not it's not
- 7:51Speaker 2: like you were going to a foreign land, you know.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I mean, like you said, with these rivalries and basketball
- 7:56Speaker 2: and it said to West Virginia, I mean, everybody knows everybody.
- 7:58Speaker 5: That's exactly. You know, you're going to out there and
- 8:00Speaker 5: you have a competition among friends and so that the
- 8:02Speaker 5: sportsmanship is really good, and you know, the you can
- 8:05Speaker 5: go to any kind of game. When I was growing up,
- 8:07Speaker 5: I remember parents and maybe they do still get maybe
- 8:09Speaker 5: one of the little league sides of things I think
- 8:11Speaker 5: may still happens. Parents are really getting there and get
- 8:13Speaker 5: vicious sometimes and you know in sports more so than
- 8:15Speaker 5: the kids would, and so you'd have parents misbehaving more
- 8:19Speaker 5: than kids. But I tell you what in this one,
- 8:22Speaker 5: you know, it's you get all these people together there
- 8:25Speaker 5: and then for hours throughout there, it's game after game
- 8:28Speaker 5: all day long, and it's really I mean it's just
- 8:30Speaker 5: the sportsmanship side of and the encouragement of the teams.
- 8:34Speaker 5: But then also carry your banner. I mean, it's it's
- 8:36Speaker 5: fun prep. The preps that are the pep sections on
- 8:38Speaker 5: the ends, the students going how loud they getting stuff too,
- 8:42Speaker 5: and the competitiveness is there.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But one of the things I think is, and I
- 8:47Speaker 2: promise we're not going to talk about sports because there
- 8:49Speaker 2: is that building down the street that you just came,
- 8:51Speaker 2: you know from. I do want to talk about that,
- 8:52Speaker 2: but you may just want to talk about sports.
- 8:54Speaker 5: I don't know, you know, you know me, I'm gamed
- 8:56Speaker 5: for anything.
- 8:57Speaker 2: But I did want to say about the Riverside. You know, again,
- 9:00Speaker 2: the Warriors making their first appearance in state tournaments in
- 9:03Speaker 2: two thousand and two, and they had some fundraisers there
- 9:06Speaker 2: in the community. Pretty Much any student that wants to go,
- 9:08Speaker 2: We did a story about it. Any student that wants
- 9:11Speaker 2: to go to the game goes for free because the
- 9:13Speaker 2: community got together and bought bought tickets for any pretty
- 9:16Speaker 2: Much any student that wants to go. Price is not
- 9:18Speaker 2: an issue.
- 9:19Speaker 1: They're going to the game, you know.
- 9:20Speaker 5: And that's to me, that's something I've had a little
- 9:23Speaker 5: bit of a beef with. I guess with high school sports,
- 9:25Speaker 5: any student should be able to go to a game
- 9:27Speaker 5: for free. Why were we charging our kids to go
- 9:29Speaker 5: to do extracurricular activities after school for this? I mean,
- 9:31Speaker 5: parents are going to show up, uncles, aunts, nephews there,
- 9:34Speaker 5: you know, brothers, they're all going to show up. So
- 9:37Speaker 5: why are we charging our kids to go watch these sports?
- 9:39Speaker 5: So that's a anyway, that's another thing.
- 9:42Speaker 2: That'll be that'll be on your on your on your
- 9:44Speaker 2: plate for next year. Man, there you go, all right,
- 9:45Speaker 2: all right, So let's get to the session. It's it's over,
- 9:49Speaker 2: thankfully in some people's eyes. Overall we'll break it down
- 9:53Speaker 2: a little bit more, but overall, your.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Take on the session overall, most disappointing session I've I've
- 9:59Speaker 5: had to participate in so twenty fifteen when I came
- 10:01Speaker 5: up and start volunteering up there, that would be my consensus,
- 10:04Speaker 5: And I think it had to do with a lot
- 10:05Speaker 5: of things. One is that for the past two years,
- 10:08Speaker 5: the Republican Senate majority has not had a cohesive agenda
- 10:11Speaker 5: that we go in and say, Okay, this is where
- 10:14Speaker 5: we know we're going to be and we're going to
- 10:15Speaker 5: wrap a team around and get this done. It just
- 10:17Speaker 5: didn't happen this session, didn't happen last session, not so
- 10:20Speaker 5: much as this is the budget we're going to have
- 10:23Speaker 5: and we work from there and work back. So whereas
- 10:26Speaker 5: every year prior to that, these past two years the
- 10:30Speaker 5: Republicans came in with the cohesive agenda to go in
- 10:33Speaker 5: and move the entire state forward. It was it was
- 10:35Speaker 5: about what do we do for West Virginia. And so
- 10:39Speaker 5: this session, without having that level of leadership, it becomes
- 10:43Speaker 5: kind of every man for himself or one for her self.
- 10:45Speaker 5: A case may be going through how to move legislation through,
- 10:51Speaker 5: and the majority of bills that are moving through when
- 10:55Speaker 5: you look at some of the committees we have in things,
- 10:58Speaker 5: instead of the best eyea winning, it's about who's on
- 11:01Speaker 5: the bill, and so you have this back and forth
- 11:04Speaker 5: where it's more political than policy oriented. And I'm a
- 11:07Speaker 5: policy guy, you know, it's just it's the best idea
- 11:10Speaker 5: should win. I don't care who it comes from, don't
- 11:11Speaker 5: care where it comes from. If it's a good idea
- 11:13Speaker 5: that moves Westernior forward, that's what should be running and
- 11:16Speaker 5: we should have a plan to make it successful. And
- 11:19Speaker 5: that's that's not happening. So that that's frustrating to me.
- 11:21Speaker 5: So that's when I when I say most disappointing, I
- 11:22Speaker 5: would say that's why this point. So we got a
- 11:25Speaker 5: mediocre not a harmful, but we got a mediocre session
- 11:29Speaker 5: and West Virginia can't afford for us to be mediocre.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Up there is the problem in European olymp A origin
- 11:35Speaker 2: your mouth again, we're talking to sunday Erit Tark. Is
- 11:37Speaker 2: it the leadership issue in your opinion? It's absolutely leadership issue? Yeah,
- 11:40Speaker 2: it absolutely leaders leadership issue.
- 11:42Speaker 5: So it's it's about and I also say that it's
- 11:46Speaker 5: it's a tough bunch to lead where the senatece fractured
- 11:50Speaker 5: several ways and you don't have one clear group that's
- 11:55Speaker 5: that's in that clear majority all the time within the
- 11:57Speaker 5: Republican leadership of the Senate side of East. It's a
- 12:01Speaker 5: difficult bunch to lead. But it's it's lacking a firm
- 12:06Speaker 5: hand and somebody who will be steadfast and be a
- 12:09Speaker 5: true north. And so hopefully we get back to that
- 12:14Speaker 5: by next session. I'm hoping. So what we'll see. But
- 12:17Speaker 5: and it showed, you know, we went back. I think
- 12:19Speaker 5: the biggest thing that showed really on something heading back
- 12:23Speaker 5: toward that direction at some point is when we did
- 12:26Speaker 5: Rayley's Law, try to mend that in having going back
- 12:30Speaker 5: and overruling the rule of a chair on germanus, I
- 12:33Speaker 5: could I talked to senators who had served there for
- 12:35Speaker 5: over twenty years ago. It's just never seen that. Now
- 12:38Speaker 5: the ruling of the chair has been challenged, it has
- 12:41Speaker 5: never been beat that that we could find. So and
- 12:45Speaker 5: when you went in, there's eighteen votes that said, all right,
- 12:48Speaker 5: then if the if the Chair is not going to
- 12:51Speaker 5: do the right thing, than we are. And so finally
- 12:54Speaker 5: you start getting something that's policy oriented over the politics.
- 12:57Speaker 5: And that's what that that's what that shows. So that
- 12:59Speaker 5: to me, that's a light at the end of the tunnel.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Maybe we go, okay, we got we've got some hope here.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Okay, so you brought up Rayley's law. Let's switch it
- 13:08Speaker 2: over to the down the hall over and the final
- 13:12Speaker 2: hour forty five minutes or so. I know you were
- 13:14Speaker 2: busy at that time, but I also know that you
- 13:16Speaker 2: were keeping up with it.
- 13:17Speaker 5: That was something it was, it was you know, as
- 13:19Speaker 5: I was, there was a bunch of us in the
- 13:21Speaker 5: Senate when they were debating that over in the House.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Everybody had their or we have surfaces we operate off
- 13:28Speaker 5: of on the on our computers for all the chamber
- 13:32Speaker 5: automation system and so usually we'll have this chamber automation
- 13:36Speaker 5: system which shows you where the bills are currently. When
- 13:37Speaker 5: you're discussing on these bills, and then you'll have the
- 13:39Speaker 5: legislative website up and has all the video stream running it,
- 13:43Speaker 5: you could hear like ten, fifteen, twenty little computer voices everywhere,
- 13:47Speaker 5: and it was all the House debate. So as we're
- 13:50Speaker 5: all in there having discussion, you can hear the house
- 13:53Speaker 5: and so that's we were very tuned into it. I
- 13:57Speaker 5: think it's disappointing that the House didn't get that moved
- 14:00Speaker 5: on through once it was sent back over And I
- 14:02Speaker 5: have to give Amy Grady and Ryan Weld great props
- 14:07Speaker 5: on this. You know they Originally what had happened is
- 14:12Speaker 5: Senator Grady had found a bill to amend the language
- 14:16Speaker 5: that was in Rayley's Law into a child welfare section
- 14:21Speaker 5: of code. So that the politics on that is is
- 14:23Speaker 5: that the homeschooling population has kind of been taken this
- 14:26Speaker 5: as a jab at them, but that's not what it is.
- 14:28Speaker 5: But one of the reasons I think they have taken
- 14:31Speaker 5: it as a jab at them is that it's in
- 14:32Speaker 5: the homeschooling section of codes where it's been trying to
- 14:34Speaker 5: put in. So, you know, Siner Grady and we were
- 14:38Speaker 5: up in her office and talking about it, and it's
- 14:41Speaker 5: it's really not that it's a child welfare issue. And
- 14:44Speaker 5: so she had amended that language into a child wealth
- 14:49Speaker 5: welfare section Code instead of into the home schooling section
- 14:52Speaker 5: of Code. Well that gives the homeschool or some air
- 14:54Speaker 5: cover on this, but the bills she amended it into
- 14:57Speaker 5: the title or the actual just it really you didn't
- 15:03Speaker 5: know that's what it was going to be when you
- 15:04Speaker 5: looked at it. And then it was going into Health Committee.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Health Committee, we had the votes, we had the sponsors
- 15:08Speaker 5: going in there, Denise Morrissey and somebody from homeschooling group
- 15:11Speaker 5: shows up and sets in the gallery and sponsors fell
- 15:14Speaker 5: off that bill like crazy, and they didn't run through
- 15:16Speaker 5: Health The first lady Denise Morrison, absolutely yes, so that
- 15:21Speaker 5: that version of the bill that would have been in
- 15:25Speaker 5: child Welfare section of Code then didn't happen. So at
- 15:29Speaker 5: that point we were okay, you know what, we have
- 15:32Speaker 5: hope for this thing to get it through. Let's go
- 15:35Speaker 5: back and see what's left. And we had discussions about
- 15:40Speaker 5: what bills were left, house bills that you could potentially
- 15:43Speaker 5: amend that into, and the closest one was that repeal bill.
- 15:46Speaker 5: And so then Senator Grady and Senator Weld really really
- 15:50Speaker 5: went work to Senate, got sixteen sponsors on that bill
- 15:52Speaker 5: or that amendment to put that over into that repeal section.
- 15:56Speaker 5: And then we knew it was going to be a
- 15:57Speaker 5: battle on GERMAINEUS. That's what because it was as close
- 16:01Speaker 5: one way or the other, parliamentarian, I mean, when we
- 16:03Speaker 5: were up at the desk and everybody's debating it at
- 16:06Speaker 5: the podium, it's it was close. It's like it could be,
- 16:10Speaker 5: couldn't be, could be, couldn't be, and back and forth.
- 16:13Speaker 5: And so that's where the fight took off, is right
- 16:17Speaker 5: there at that podium. So we went back. We were
- 16:19Speaker 5: ready to dig.
- 16:20Speaker 2: In talking again with Senator Eric Tar Can you hang

- 19:06Speaker 2: tar Is here. I don't want to go Eric all
- 19:09Speaker 2: tmz here, but let's talk about relationships in a legislature.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Is it as broken or maybe broken as a strong word,
- 19:18Speaker 2: maybe as badly bent as it appears to be at times?
- 19:21Speaker 5: Yes, it absolutely is.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I tell you that.
- 19:25Speaker 5: The fuel for productivity under that dome is trust. It's
- 19:32Speaker 5: when you've got a group of people who can trust
- 19:34Speaker 5: the motives and the word of individuals that you're working with,
- 19:38Speaker 5: you can get stuff done. And the problem right up
- 19:41Speaker 5: there now is that you know it's there's no trust.
- 19:45Speaker 5: There's not you even if if we're in caucus, there's
- 19:49Speaker 5: things you don't say because you know it's going out
- 19:50Speaker 5: of a text message as fast as you can say it.
- 19:53Speaker 5: So when you have that kind of level of broken trust,
- 19:56Speaker 5: then that breaks that process.
- 19:58Speaker 2: One bill specifically that was discussed a lot was Everify.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Get explain your stance on e verify because there were
- 20:10Speaker 2: a lot of Republicans that were that were pushing it,
- 20:13Speaker 2: but those that tend to be business owners like yourself
- 20:17Speaker 2: were not. Explain.
- 20:19Speaker 5: For anybody who ever signed the front side of a paycheck,
- 20:21Speaker 5: they knew how stupid this was. For those who have
- 20:25Speaker 5: never signed the front side of a paycheck, it was
- 20:26Speaker 5: all about the politics of it because they were working
- 20:29Speaker 5: off of a poll and I only I had never
- 20:30Speaker 5: got to see the polling question. But supposedly there was
- 20:35Speaker 5: this polling question that said that ninety eight percent of
- 20:37Speaker 5: West Virginia's in favor of you verify.
- 20:39Speaker 2: And explain what everify?
- 20:40Speaker 5: So say, e verify is an effort that it's you know,
- 20:44Speaker 5: we use it in our businesses. So what it is
- 20:46Speaker 5: is that if you have somebody who's coming in, you're
- 20:48Speaker 5: going you're going to potentially hire them. You can register
- 20:52Speaker 5: in this federal website. It's a voluntary website. It was
- 20:55Speaker 5: created by Bill Clinton back in nineteen ninety six, is
- 20:57Speaker 5: under his administration, it has been voluntary ever since at
- 21:00Speaker 5: the federal level that you can go in and put
- 21:03Speaker 5: somebody's name and see if they're legal to work in
- 21:05Speaker 5: the United States, which is one of the tools we
- 21:09Speaker 5: have to do that as employers. There's a bunch. So
- 21:13Speaker 5: when you become a fairly more sophisticated than most beginning
- 21:17Speaker 5: businesses are, it becomes a good tool to have when
- 21:23Speaker 5: when your expertise is making donuts or making cupcakes, or
- 21:27Speaker 5: making apple pies or fixing cars, you're not an HR person.
- 21:32Speaker 5: It is not the thing for you to have in
- 21:33Speaker 5: your business. So there's because there's so many other ways
- 21:36Speaker 5: that you can go through to verify some legal to work.
- 21:40Speaker 5: So Everify legislation was born out of a national effort
- 21:47Speaker 5: around the rhetoric of illegal immigration. And I'm as strong
- 21:52Speaker 5: a proponent as anybody you'll find is having illegal workforce
- 21:56Speaker 5: as somebody who's here legally in our country and legal
- 21:58Speaker 5: to work, been doing business for nearly thirty years now,
- 22:02Speaker 5: and we've never had anybody in our business that is
- 22:05Speaker 5: not legal to work. So this bill would have placed
- 22:11Speaker 5: in jeopardy those type of businesses that are doing it right.
- 22:15Speaker 5: It's like it's like putting up a gun free z
- 22:16Speaker 5: own thing, you know. So the people that are doing
- 22:19Speaker 5: everything legally, those aren't the ones you worried about. It's
- 22:21Speaker 5: the ones who have been side skirting everything that you're
- 22:24Speaker 5: worried about So this bill would have put businesses in
- 22:26Speaker 5: West Virginia's harm's way by putting a new regulatory mandate
- 22:30Speaker 5: that was that was characterized as an effort toward illegal immigration.
- 22:36Speaker 5: But the reality is the people that are hiring the
- 22:37Speaker 5: people that don't work legally or paying cash, they're not
- 22:39Speaker 5: going through any kind of system. And so all this
- 22:42Speaker 5: did is put another regulatory burden on the businesses of
- 22:45Speaker 5: West Virginia and placed them at risk because it took
- 22:47Speaker 5: them all the way on a paperwork just only if
- 22:50Speaker 5: your paperwork wasn't right in the business to losing your
- 22:52Speaker 5: business license. Think about the people who mortgage their homes
- 22:55Speaker 5: and everything else they own and probably their kid's future
- 22:59Speaker 5: on getting a business are in West Virginia and that
- 23:02Speaker 5: bill that came out was going to potentially rip that
- 23:04Speaker 5: away from them on.
- 23:06Speaker 2: A paperwork era like a clerical area.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, so it was. It was absurd. And
- 23:10Speaker 5: the people who are pushing up the hardest Senator Rucker
- 23:12Speaker 5: never signed the front side of a paycheck in their life.
- 23:16Speaker 5: So and they were arguing against everybody in West Virginia
- 23:20Speaker 5: that has been doing payrolls forever that you got this wrong.
- 23:23Speaker 5: And they just weren't listening just what.
- 23:25Speaker 2: The Chamber of Commerce was one of those two that
- 23:28Speaker 2: represents businesses of all sizes. It's not just large businesses.
- 23:31Speaker 2: It said that this is that, this was that that
- 23:33Speaker 2: this wasn't needed.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Absolutely, Yeah, chamber was one of the loud voices. I mean,
- 23:37Speaker 5: there was you name it. Now there's there are organizations
- 23:40Speaker 5: out there and this this this tends to happen in conservatism.
- 23:43Speaker 5: We're more loud than we were as conservatives, for sure.
- 23:46Speaker 6: You know.
- 23:46Speaker 5: It's just that not only are we conservative in our politics,
- 23:49Speaker 5: so a lot of times we're conservative in our voice,
- 23:52Speaker 5: and so the more liberal side of things that tended
- 23:55Speaker 5: to be a very loud minority, we tend to be
- 23:57Speaker 5: a quiet majority when it comes to issue. And in
- 24:01Speaker 5: the business community that's very true. You'll you'll have you know,
- 24:04Speaker 5: you have the Chamber of Commerce that's out there that
- 24:06Speaker 5: has a bunch of memberships, and they go look, as
- 24:08Speaker 5: representing a business community at large, we're going to take
- 24:11Speaker 5: a position, and they'll take a loud position. But individual
- 24:14Speaker 5: industries or individual businesses in industries tend to be very
- 24:18Speaker 5: careful because they don't want the politics to try and
- 24:21Speaker 5: hurt their business, right so they want to quietly influence policy,
- 24:26Speaker 5: because if they come out loudly trying to influence policy
- 24:29Speaker 5: and they tick off some of their customer base, then
- 24:31Speaker 5: it's harmful their business. It's harmful for them to be
- 24:33Speaker 5: able to make payroll. So outside of the chamber, almost
- 24:39Speaker 5: to a business that contacted me or business owner or CEO,
- 24:44Speaker 5: even if they're not an owner, saying, you know, giving
- 24:47Speaker 5: what the heck, what are you guys doing? Why are
- 24:49Speaker 5: you putting more regulation on Westreian businesses? That was the
- 24:53Speaker 5: very loud side of the fact that this even went
- 24:55Speaker 5: into Judiciary Committee in a Republican mega majority is ridiculous,
- 25:01Speaker 5: and it was all over populous politics on a poll
- 25:05Speaker 5: question that was probably saying, do you not do you
- 25:08Speaker 5: want legal workers in your workforce in West region? Well,
- 25:11Speaker 5: of course, who's not going to say that, right, so
- 25:14Speaker 5: and then and are you are you in favor of
- 25:18Speaker 5: enforcing policy against illegal immigration? Absolutely all these businesses are
- 25:23Speaker 5: that are against this bill where as well, But this
- 25:26Speaker 5: bill came out to harm the people that are doing
- 25:27Speaker 5: it right in the name of that and the people
- 25:30Speaker 5: who were pushing it really didn't care and that that
- 25:33Speaker 5: was the problem with that bill.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Talking again with State Senator Eric Tarr. The primary election
- 25:38Speaker 2: is coming up. All the House seats were up, some
- 25:40Speaker 2: of the Senate seats are up, including yours, and you
- 25:42Speaker 2: do have primary opponents. I'm not going to really get
- 25:44Speaker 2: into that, but i do want to say how much
- 25:47Speaker 2: how much of what was just witnessed in the legislature
- 25:51Speaker 2: do you think we'll go into the decision making of
- 25:54Speaker 2: some voters what I'm what I'm getting at here, not
- 25:56Speaker 2: just in the Senate, but let's talk about the House
- 25:58Speaker 2: and just racists in general. If they go back and
- 26:01Speaker 2: they look at this session, how much do you think
- 26:03Speaker 2: the voting populace the constituency how much are they going
- 26:07Speaker 2: to look at that session and either says it's time
- 26:11Speaker 2: for a change or I'm not going to vote at
- 26:14Speaker 2: all because these people are crazy or whatever.
- 26:17Speaker 5: Is it going to be that big of a deal
- 26:19Speaker 5: in your opinion? You know, I think it's going to
- 26:20Speaker 5: affect some votes. You got to realize and when you're
- 26:22Speaker 5: under the dome, you think everybody's paying attention. You know,
- 26:25Speaker 5: so because you have a thousand people in each year
- 26:29Speaker 5: all the time, so you think that everybody's paying attention.
- 26:33Speaker 5: When the reality is when we step out at dome
- 26:35Speaker 5: and start having these conversations outside of the politicos. I'm
- 26:40Speaker 5: always surprised about how many people really don't pay attention,
- 26:43Speaker 5: and so I think for those that are paying attention, absolutely,
- 26:47Speaker 5: are they going to be enough to influence the election?
- 26:51Speaker 5: I don't know, because what happens in these elections now
- 26:53Speaker 5: that they're in the primary, actually when they're in the
- 26:55Speaker 5: generals too, but in the primaries, what we're finding is
- 26:58Speaker 5: is that national groups with big pocketbooks target our elections.
- 27:05Speaker 5: And so you'll you'll have these superpacks that come in
- 27:07Speaker 5: and they be maybe related to say pharmaceutical stuff, but
- 27:11Speaker 5: they'll come in and run messages against candidates on something
- 27:15Speaker 5: about guns or illegal immigration, like we were talking about whatever,
- 27:20Speaker 5: So nothing to do with pharmaceuticals, but they'll go in
- 27:21Speaker 5: target messaging and it had it doesn't even have to
- 27:24Speaker 5: be anywhere close to true, because what we found in
- 27:27Speaker 5: this last primary election season is that as long as
- 27:29Speaker 5: you want the election, there's no repercussions efforts because you
- 27:33Speaker 5: don't unseat them. And so they'd come in, they drop
- 27:35Speaker 5: hundreds thousands of dollars in the last and the last
- 27:37Speaker 5: you know, a few seconds of the game and then
- 27:40Speaker 5: take out candidates based on information that could be far
- 27:45Speaker 5: from the truth. And so what I get concerned about
- 27:49Speaker 5: is when you have a low turnout election and you
- 27:52Speaker 5: have that kind of messaging, each dollar has more potency
- 27:55Speaker 5: to the person that reaches because you can really hammer
- 27:58Speaker 5: a small group of people.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Instead.
- 28:00Speaker 5: This is a non presidential year, which means you're going
- 28:02Speaker 5: to have a lower turnout. It's a primary election, which
- 28:05Speaker 5: is lower turnout, you know, so then a general election,
- 28:07Speaker 5: so you're you can you can really get a lot
- 28:10Speaker 5: of messaging impact with relatively little dollars, and the majority
- 28:14Speaker 5: of those dollars are likely the ones would be harmful
- 28:17Speaker 5: to getting this corrected are probably out of state dollars
- 28:22Speaker 5: to be my guess.
- 28:22Speaker 2: By the way, we want to encourage people to spend
- 28:24Speaker 2: a lot of dollars here say just saying that before
- 28:27Speaker 2: we let you go, give me a positive on this stas.
- 28:29Speaker 5: Positive you know what we did no harm. There is
- 28:32Speaker 5: so much momentum that right now in coming in West Virginia.
- 28:37Speaker 5: We got a good compromise when it came through on
- 28:39Speaker 5: a budget versus the tax cut. You got to you know,
- 28:41Speaker 5: reduce income tax cut or one hundred and twenty five
- 28:44Speaker 5: million dollars for this year. You're not really going to
- 28:46Speaker 5: fill that in short term. It's a it's a drop
- 28:48Speaker 5: in the bucket relative what's needed in West Virginia. But
- 28:51Speaker 5: we didn't get out ahead of our skis on the budget.
- 28:53Speaker 5: That's a big positive. Another positive is is that the
- 28:57Speaker 5: momentum that's been created over the past twelve to fifteen,
- 29:01Speaker 5: about twelve years, ten twelve years, is really really still strong.
- 29:05Speaker 5: We got some major, major investments that are coming into
- 29:08Speaker 5: West Virginia that are going to change the lives of
- 29:10Speaker 5: generations of families, and so I'm excited about that. I
- 29:13Speaker 5: love seeing it. It's been a on honor of my
- 29:16Speaker 5: life to get to be a part of it. And
- 29:18Speaker 5: so you know, I hope that your listeners out there
- 29:20Speaker 5: want to keep me up here and keep me in
- 29:21Speaker 5: that fight, because that's that's why I'm here. It's to
- 29:24Speaker 5: get those jobs here in West Virginia and represent conservative values.
- 29:28Speaker 5: So end you're listening and vote for Eric Carley Police.
- 29:31Speaker 2: We end on a happy note. Absolutely right, You're just
- 29:34Speaker 2: a happy guy, Senator Eric tar I know you can't
- 29:38Speaker 2: see him right now, but I'll probably post a picture later.
- 29:40Speaker 2: He's you know he's in a T shirt today, which
- 29:42Speaker 2: you don't see very often. I guess, I guess. Now
- 29:45Speaker 2: the session is officially over when you ditch the suit
- 29:48Speaker 2: and tie and have on a T shirt.
- 29:49Speaker 5: You know, I get back to me jeans in a
- 29:50Speaker 5: T shirt or my natural habitat.
- 29:53Speaker 2: This is the thing about and I've known you for
- 29:55Speaker 2: quite some time. The thing that I think is interesting
- 29:57Speaker 2: about you is people I don't They think they know you,
- 30:01Speaker 2: but they really don't. Because I was having a conversation
- 30:05Speaker 2: with a coworker upstairs, but we were talking about your
- 30:07Speaker 2: love of cars, and the person said, really, so I
- 30:11Speaker 2: didn't know that.
- 30:12Speaker 5: So man, Yeah, I'm gonna get to know get to
- 30:14Speaker 5: know Eric Tarr.
- 30:15Speaker 2: The ten thing I'll have you on the show sometimes,
- 30:18Speaker 2: ten things you didn't know about Eric Tarr. None of
- 30:19Speaker 2: them have to do with politics.
- 30:20Speaker 11: That there you go.
- 30:22Speaker 5: You can put my family around here and let them
- 30:25Speaker 5: do that and they'll have a blast with that conversation and.
- 30:27Speaker 2: You won't be a part of it. All right, Eric Tar,
- 30:30Speaker 2: appreciate you being here. Man, Thanks a lot. Twenty three

- 33:36Speaker 2: of arguing these days online on your radio. Sorry about that,
- 33:40Speaker 2: but one event covering up Monday night. He is trying
- 33:42Speaker 2: to bring people together from all backgrounds out of the
- 33:46Speaker 2: religious communities. Happening Monday evening seven at Basilica of the
- 33:51Speaker 2: co Cathedral of Sacred Heart, Virginia Street here in Charleston,
- 33:53Speaker 2: Moderated by Mark Adkinson. He joins us this morning in
- 33:56Speaker 2: the Jerry Construction Studios. Good morning, say welcome to the show.
- 33:59Speaker 16: Good morning day, Thanks thanks for having.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Me tell us about this event.
- 34:01Speaker 16: Overall, this event is part of the Root and Branch
- 34:05Speaker 16: inter faith discussion group that's been going on for years
- 34:09Speaker 16: actually in Charleston, in the Charleston area. It started by
- 34:13Speaker 16: a lady named Hazel Crowley. It was her invention sort of,
- 34:18Speaker 16: and she passed away a few years ago and she
- 34:23Speaker 16: wanted us to continue it. So that's what we are doing.
- 34:25Speaker 16: And it's a group of different, as you would guess,
- 34:29Speaker 16: religious folks who get together and we discuss similarities which
- 34:35Speaker 16: are surprising sometimes to different people. And we don't shy
- 34:41Speaker 16: away from differences, but we do so in a respectful way.
- 34:46Speaker 2: What a novel concept.
- 34:50Speaker 7: It's not a place to prosely.
- 34:52Speaker 16: It's not a place to argue, it's not a place
- 34:55Speaker 16: to say I'm right and you're wrong. It's a place
- 34:59Speaker 16: to come and learn about the other folks around us
- 35:02Speaker 16: and hopefully come away knowing each other a little better.
- 35:06Speaker 16: That There are a few members that are on the
- 35:08Speaker 16: panel regularly. One is Rabbi Eureki that most of your
- 35:12Speaker 16: listeners will know, who recently retired actually from the synagogue
- 35:17Speaker 16: down the street. Another is Nasir abdu Salam, who's the
- 35:21Speaker 16: Imam of the mosque down in South Charleston which is
- 35:25Speaker 16: very big, thriving mosque and congregation. And this next week
- 35:31Speaker 16: Monday Night will have folks from the Catholic background. Molly
- 35:37Speaker 16: Lenahan Belcher, who's a theologian at Charleston Catholic is always
- 35:43Speaker 16: on our panel and she'll be there, and we're also
- 35:45Speaker 16: pleased to announce that Deacon Michael Kaywash will be there
- 35:50Speaker 16: and welcome us in. So the one Monday Night will
- 35:53Speaker 16: be basically focusing on Catholicism and how it interacts with
- 36:00Speaker 16: other faiths and how the history of Catholicism and Protestant
- 36:04Speaker 16: religions and Judaism and Islam all work together.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Here's the interesting thing in looking at your lineup. Mark
- 36:11Speaker 2: when I when we talk about getting people from different
- 36:14Speaker 2: religious backgrounds, we're not talking about having the first Baptist
- 36:16Speaker 2: church with the second Baptist church. Right, you could not
- 36:19Speaker 2: get any more Pardon me for saying that you could
- 36:22Speaker 2: not get any more different than the than the faiths
- 36:25Speaker 2: that you have here. But but you're you're looking for
- 36:29Speaker 2: common ground. That's right, and there's there's a whole lot
- 36:31Speaker 2: more of it, I think than what people may think.
- 36:35Speaker 16: You're absolutely right. We like to say our similarities are
- 36:39Speaker 16: greater than our differences, and I think that's true of
- 36:43Speaker 16: all religions.
- 36:45Speaker 1: These are great people.
- 36:46Speaker 16: They've become my friends, and they're just fantastic, and they
- 36:50Speaker 16: share their time so generously. And and we also we're
- 36:56Speaker 16: not doing it this coming week, although we'll talk about Protestants,
- 37:00Speaker 16: but we've also included all the major Protestant churches in
- 37:04Speaker 16: the Canall Valley too, and we'll do so in the future.
- 37:07Speaker 2: What's a typical discussion, Like, I know they're all going
- 37:10Speaker 2: to be different depending on the parties that are there,
- 37:12Speaker 2: but you just give me like a little thunnail. What's
- 37:14Speaker 2: a typical discussion.
- 37:15Speaker 16: A typical discussion will be whichever group we're focusing on
- 37:19Speaker 16: next week, it'll be Catholicism. We'll ask them about their background.
- 37:24Speaker 16: First of all, if you haven't been to this basilica,
- 37:29Speaker 16: you need to come just to see the building. It
- 37:31Speaker 16: is so beautiful and it's it's very generous of them
- 37:34Speaker 16: to let us have a meeting there, as I understand
- 37:36Speaker 16: that a basilica, and I'm not Catholic, is a place
- 37:40Speaker 16: where the Pope can come if he visits here. So
- 37:43Speaker 16: next time the Pope or American Pope is in West Virginia, yeah,
- 37:47Speaker 16: he may be down here.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Make sure you get him on this show. I've interviewed
- 37:51Speaker 2: a lot of people, but I've never done a pope.
- 37:52Speaker 7: So we'll pass the word along. But a typical show is.
- 37:58Speaker 16: Typical discussion group would be focusing on Catholicism. It's history,
- 38:04Speaker 16: it's roots, maybe some of the things that's doing.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Today in the world.
- 38:08Speaker 16: And then toward the end we'll have in this group
- 38:12Speaker 16: Rabbi Eureki and our Emam pitch in and say here's
- 38:16Speaker 16: their views about it. There will be refreshments which are free,
- 38:20Speaker 16: But the best part of the evening, frankly, is after
- 38:24Speaker 16: the program is over, and then you've it will only last.
- 38:28Speaker 7: An hour, and then you'll have.
- 38:31Speaker 16: Half an hour or so with refreshments and people can
- 38:34Speaker 16: ask all these people questions.
- 38:36Speaker 7: So if you've got a.
- 38:37Speaker 16: Question about Judaism or Catholicism or Islam, you'll have the
- 38:42Speaker 16: experts there that you can answer.
- 38:44Speaker 2: You think, and here's the thing about it all, we're
- 38:46Speaker 2: all guilty of stereotyping of any number of things. Yeah,
- 38:51Speaker 2: but you think, well, those people believe this, and you
- 38:55Speaker 2: find out, well, maybe they do and maybe they don't.
- 38:58Speaker 2: And there's enough that goes around with all of the
- 39:01Speaker 2: we all do it.
- 39:02Speaker 7: Let me give you an example.
- 39:03Speaker 16: Our last one, our last meeting was held at the
- 39:06Speaker 16: synagogue here on Virginia Street, and the emom came and
- 39:13Speaker 16: he spoke in a synagogue and he said, I have
- 39:16Speaker 16: never been in a synagogue in my life. That was
- 39:19Speaker 16: the first time this emom had been there. And then
- 39:22Speaker 16: he spoke about how throughout history Muslims were friends to Jews,
- 39:29Speaker 16: and the awful programs and all the problems that Jews
- 39:37Speaker 16: went through weren't caused by Muslims throughout history. Now in
- 39:41Speaker 16: recent history, obviously there are differences. And so that was
- 39:45Speaker 16: great to hear, but for him to come to the
- 39:48Speaker 16: synagogue for the first time was a great thing for us.
- 39:51Speaker 2: And again, this is going to be It starts at
- 39:53Speaker 2: seven o'clock.
- 39:54Speaker 16: Seven o'clock at the Basilica Co Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
- 39:59Speaker 16: Everyone knows where that is, downtown, So please come. It's
- 40:01Speaker 16: free and we'd love to see you.
- 40:03Speaker 2: It sounds like it's gonna be an interesting night. Is
- 40:05Speaker 2: there somewhere online that people can learn more about the.
- 40:08Speaker 16: We don't have an online presence right now.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Okay, we'll make one, all right, we can work that
- 40:12Speaker 2: out at the at the meeting. It sounds fascinating to me.
- 40:14Speaker 2: I mean, it really really does.
- 40:15Speaker 7: And I'm joining us.
- 40:16Speaker 2: All right. We appreciate you being here.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Man.
- 40:18Speaker 2: You'll serve as the moderator.
- 40:20Speaker 1: How's correct?
- 40:21Speaker 2: And now do you moderate these like every time they
- 40:23Speaker 2: do them?
- 40:24Speaker 9: All right?
- 40:25Speaker 2: Give me a good moderator story.
- 40:27Speaker 16: A good moderators story. The best one is the when
- 40:31Speaker 16: I just told you about having the email come to
- 40:33Speaker 16: the synagogue to speak. Uh. But it's usually pretty lighthearted.
- 40:39Speaker 16: It's not overly.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Dense.
- 40:43Speaker 7: Really, it's a lightheart.
- 40:46Speaker 2: So as a moderator, you you don't have to like
- 40:49Speaker 2: you know, have security there. You don't have to lay
- 40:51Speaker 2: hands on anybody or whatever where everybody's respectful. That's and
- 40:54Speaker 2: that's that's gonna be honest with you, Mark, that's what
- 40:56Speaker 2: we need.
- 40:56Speaker 3: That's right.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Appreciate you being here, good luck with great to be here.
