- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, we're talking to your Dodgers territory host and the
- 0:07Speaker 1: athletics Katie Wu right now about a team that just
- 0:10Speaker 1: can't escape the headlines lately. Katie, great to see you.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Thanks for hopping back on with us. Let's get to
- 0:16Speaker 1: the headliner. So Shohei Otani to the injured list. He's
- 0:18Speaker 1: not going to have much time to play in some
- 0:21Speaker 1: games when he returns. What's the deal here?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, well, nice to see three of my favorite fellows.
- 0:26Speaker 3: You too, AJ.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I think this has been a big deal, a big
- 0:29Speaker 2: talking point for the Dodgers based on when Shohei Otani
- 0:33Speaker 2: started ramping back up his throwing program. He was supposed to,
- 0:36Speaker 2: we'll backtrack a little bit. potentially returned to the mound
- 0:39Speaker 2: on the first or the last Sunday, excuse me, of August.
- 0:42Speaker 2: And right before that, the Dodgers scratched him saying there
- 0:45Speaker 2: was just total body soreness and he wasn't going to pitch.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And that ultimately bled into the last two weeks of
- 0:51Speaker 2: Otani or the last week and a half of him
- 0:53Speaker 2: really not being able to play at all. He missed
- 0:56Speaker 2: six of their last seven games. And it was very
- 0:58Speaker 2: clear watching him at the plate. He just didn't look healthy.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And you were questioning If he's not healthy enough to pitch,
- 1:04Speaker 2: is this bleeding into his performance at the plate? And
- 1:07Speaker 2: both he and the Dodgers insisted that it wasn't, but
- 1:09Speaker 2: the more you watched him, the more you saw that
- 1:11Speaker 2: that wasn't the case at all. So he misses four games,
- 1:14Speaker 2: the longest game or the longest tenure in his, the
- 1:17Speaker 2: longest time he hasn't been playing with the Dodgers in
- 1:19Speaker 2: his tenure, excuse me. And then comes back on Monday,
- 1:22Speaker 2: goes over four with a couple of punch outs. doesn't
- 1:24Speaker 2: play Tuesday, doesn't play Wednesday, and the Dodgers finally make
- 1:27Speaker 2: the decision to put him on the IL. Because he's
- 1:30Speaker 2: a two-way player, guys, that's a 15-day IL stint. Even
- 1:33Speaker 2: if he's not pitching at the moment, he has to
- 1:34Speaker 2: do the full 15 days, which means he'll come back
- 1:37Speaker 2: around the first days eligible with backdates September 23rd, which
- 1:41Speaker 2: puts him available for the last series of the regular season.
- 1:45Speaker 2: The question for me that I have is the biggest
- 1:47Speaker 2: thing the Dodgers made, the biggest deal, was making sure
- 1:50Speaker 2: they had a healthy Otani who wasn't compromised heading into October.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Can that be the case, knowing that he's not going
- 1:56Speaker 2: to see live at-bats for two weeks and he's going
- 1:58Speaker 2: to have just three days if he's ready to be
- 2:01Speaker 2: activated off the IL to return to action before the
- 2:03Speaker 2: postseason starts?
- 2:05Speaker 4: Well, Katie, that's the question is, can they get him
- 2:08Speaker 4: ready through those three games? I'm sure if they get
- 2:11Speaker 4: a one or two seed, which it looks like they're
- 2:13Speaker 4: going to get right now, They'll bring in some minor
- 2:16Speaker 4: league pitchers and have them take live at-bats for that
- 2:18Speaker 4: time they have off.
- 2:19Speaker 5: But is that enough? Because they need Shohei Ohtani. I mean,
- 2:22Speaker 5: if you watch the.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Dodgers play, yes, I know they're playing the Rockies and
- 2:24Speaker 4: they're beating the crap out of the Rockies right now.
- 2:26Speaker 4: But when they play better teams, it's been an offensive
- 2:29Speaker 4: problem for them, and they really need Shohei to go,
- 2:33Speaker 4: especially at the top of the order. Will he have
- 2:34Speaker 4: enough time to be ready to be that guy that
- 2:36Speaker 4: they need?
- 2:38Speaker 2: That's exactly what the question is now. And it raises the,
- 2:40Speaker 2: you know, hindsight's always 20-20. But would the Dodgers have
- 2:43Speaker 2: been better served just placing him on the IL when
- 2:45Speaker 2: these issues first popped up? Look, no player is 100%.
- 2:47Speaker 2: You guys know this in the middle of September. But
- 2:50Speaker 2: for Shohei, the big emphasis the Dodgers put all season
- 2:53Speaker 2: long was making sure that they could have his bat
- 2:55Speaker 2: in the lineup come October. Obviously, everybody, all of baseball
- 2:59Speaker 2: wants him to be a two-way player, but the reality
- 3:02Speaker 2: is the Dodgers rotation with Blake Snell, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto,
- 3:05Speaker 2: with Tarek Skubal, with Tyler Glassdow, all healthy. They can
- 3:09Speaker 2: withstand not having Shohei in the starting rotation. They're built
- 3:12Speaker 2: to absorb that. This lineup, with what has been a
- 3:14Speaker 2: lack of slug really all season long, is not built
- 3:17Speaker 2: to withstand no Shohei Otani in the leadoff spot. So now,
- 3:20Speaker 2: you know you're going to be without him for the
- 3:21Speaker 2: next two weeks. The good news is, yes, they beat
- 3:23Speaker 2: up on bad teams. Dodgers have won seven straight. They
- 3:25Speaker 2: could clinch a postseason spot as early as this weekend.
- 3:29Speaker 2: But it's a brand new ballgame come October. And if
- 3:31Speaker 2: Shohei just has three, four games to ramp back up,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and we're not even sure what his overall physical condition
- 3:36Speaker 2: is going to be, you can make the argument that
- 3:38Speaker 2: the Dodgers will have a compromised version of Shohei Otani
- 3:41Speaker 2: hitting leadoff for them in October, assuming he comes out
- 3:44Speaker 2: of this IL stint healthy and to me that's the
- 3:46Speaker 2: most glaring problem yes they can absorb not having him
- 3:49Speaker 2: as the pitcher as much as all baseball wants to
- 3:51Speaker 2: see shohei otani doing two-way things but can this lineup
- 3:55Speaker 2: the way the offense has looked against good teams to
- 3:57Speaker 2: your point aj withstand not having a fully healthy shohei
- 4:00Speaker 2: the dodgers were were very adamant that they did not
- 4:03Speaker 2: want this to happen but now they're facing a reality
- 4:05Speaker 2: where in two weeks it still could be the.
- 4:06Speaker 6: Case i know we don't hear a lot from shohei
- 4:10Speaker 6: but and the dodgers try to keep things close to
- 4:12Speaker 6: the vest Was there a pushback from Shohei to finally
- 4:16Speaker 6: go in the IL because of what we heard from
- 4:19Speaker 6: Dave Roberts leading up to this time and the whole
- 4:22Speaker 6: time that you explained how he was missing time, wasn't starting,
- 4:25Speaker 6: wasn't hitting, should have pitched, didn't pitch, overall soreness. Was
- 4:28Speaker 6: there a fight between Shohei and the front office or
- 4:33Speaker 6: the training group or Dave Roberts?
- 4:37Speaker 2: I don't think there was a fight. I don't even
- 4:39Speaker 2: think there was necessarily a disconnect. I think it was
- 4:41Speaker 2: the Dodgers trying to figure out just how hurt Shohei
- 4:44Speaker 2: was and whether or not it made sense because, again,
- 4:47Speaker 2: he's not going on the 10-day IL like most position players.
- 4:50Speaker 3: He's going on the 15.
- 4:50Speaker 2: If it made sense to play short with an expanded
- 4:53Speaker 2: roster for a couple of days, if it meant that
- 4:55Speaker 2: Shohei didn't have to go on the IL and serve
- 4:58Speaker 2: that whole stint, or if he could just go on
- 5:00Speaker 2: the aisle now and try to be healthy coming out
- 5:03Speaker 2: of it. And I think, and we talked to Dave
- 5:04Speaker 2: Roberts yesterday, Shohei hurt himself again, felt something on that
- 5:08Speaker 2: right bicep that's been plaguing him for the better part
- 5:10Speaker 2: of the season on a swing he took on Monday
- 5:12Speaker 2: and didn't disclose it until Tuesday night. Because up until
- 5:15Speaker 2: Tuesday night, the Dodgers and Dave Roberts have conveyed this
- 5:18Speaker 2: to us as well. believed Otani would be back in
- 5:20Speaker 2: the lineup on Wednesday. And this was just part of
- 5:21Speaker 2: the load management part where maybe he would play one day,
- 5:24Speaker 2: have one day off as the Dodgers work to manage
- 5:27Speaker 2: the total body soreness and limitations that he's been dealing with.
- 5:30Speaker 7: But.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Look, the all-time greats, you guys know this, Freddie Freeman
- 5:34Speaker 2: is not going to go up to the Dodgers and say, hey,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I'm hurt, I'm not going to play today. Neither is
- 5:38Speaker 2: Shohei Otani. And I think there needs to be better
- 5:40Speaker 2: communication between the two. If Shohei wasn't feeling 100%, that
- 5:43Speaker 2: needs to be communicated with the Dodgers so they can
- 5:45Speaker 2: make their best educated decision. This whole process of this
- 5:48Speaker 2: two-way season, it was the first time the Dodgers have
- 5:50Speaker 2: had him for two-way duties. So there's going to be
- 5:52Speaker 2: some trial and error in managing the load. But I
- 5:54Speaker 2: feel like if we learned anything over the last month,
- 5:57Speaker 2: communication from both sides should be better.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Dehydration is real, people. So are quince electrolyte stick packs.
- 6:08Speaker 1: All of a sudden, you don't need some big bottle
- 6:10Speaker 1: to carry around. Just these little packets if you suddenly
- 6:13Speaker 1: feel like you need a little hydration. Raspberry salt, delicious.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Citrus salt, my personal favorite. And watermelon salt for those
- 6:20Speaker 1: watermelon lovers out there.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Very solid. Just in your water bottle.
- 6:25Speaker 4: I'm a watermelon guy. It's quick, easy in the morning.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Wake up, feeling a little down. Throw some in there,
- 6:30Speaker 4: feeling great. Throw some in there because it'll keep that
- 6:32Speaker 4: high going.
- 6:33Speaker 5: So stay on it.
- 6:34Speaker 4: It hydrates you because of that fermented rice, great tasting,
- 6:39Speaker 4: and it makes you feel better.
- 6:40Speaker 1: They're made in the USA, rigorously third-party tested. Give your
- 6:43Speaker 1: body what it really needs to stay hydrated. Quince.com slash
- 6:46Speaker 1: foul gets you free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.
- 6:50Speaker 1: That's quince.com slash foul for free shipping and 365-day returns.

- 6:56Speaker 1: Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure,
- 6:59Speaker 1: or prevent any disease.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Well, I mean, he must have better communication than I
- 7:04Speaker 4: have with my bosses because I was four days in Vegas,
- 7:07Speaker 4: full-body soreness, and I had to work on Tuesday. So, apparently,
- 7:11Speaker 4: he was better communicating.
- 7:12Speaker 7: I mean, right?
- 7:14Speaker 2: Was that soreness self-induced, AJ?
- 7:16Speaker 7: Does it matter?
- 7:16Speaker 5: So is Shohei from pitching, trying to pitch.
- 7:20Speaker 6: He's a two-way player, too. He's a two-way player.
- 7:23Speaker 5: Also a two-way player.
- 7:24Speaker 4: By the way, earlier I said the Yankees, the Rockies
- 7:27Speaker 4: are playing the Dodgers.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Sorry, they're playing the Reds. The Yankees are playing the Rockies.
- 7:30Speaker 5: It's hard not to confuse them.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you got it.
- 7:33Speaker 4: You cover me, Katie. But could this be a good thing?
- 7:36Speaker 4: I know people are saying, oh, no, he's only going
- 7:37Speaker 4: to have three games. But could this be a good thing?
- 7:39Speaker 4: It's gotten Freddie off first base for a couple days.
- 7:42Speaker 4: If they need to get someone else, let them DH.
- 7:44Speaker 4: They can let that. Now they bring up DePaulo, right,
- 7:47Speaker 4: to get a look at him. Could this actually be
- 7:50Speaker 4: a little bit– Will Smith could DH instead of having
- 7:52Speaker 4: to catch. Could there be a silver lining for a
- 7:56Speaker 4: Dodger team that nobody, except for Dodger fans, wants to
- 7:59Speaker 4: find any positive about? Sure.
- 8:01Speaker 2: It's not ideal, and the silver lining is that Josue
- 8:04Speaker 2: DePaula comes up, Dodgers top prospect, goes straight from double-A
- 8:07Speaker 2: to the majors, the first position player under Andrew Friedman's
- 8:10Speaker 2: tenure to do so. The Dodgers have been so particular
- 8:13Speaker 2: on how they manage their 40-man roster, but they saw
- 8:16Speaker 2: an opportunity for DePaula to get continuous reps as the DH.
- 8:20Speaker 2: He's going to get the lion's share of reps as
- 8:21Speaker 2: the designated hitter with Otani out, Dave Roberts said yesterday.
- 8:24Speaker 2: He could spell some guys in the corner, but right
- 8:26Speaker 2: now this is a hit tool prospect that the whole
- 8:28Speaker 2: organization believes is arguably their best overall hit tool in
- 8:33Speaker 2: the farm system. So the silver lining is we get
- 8:36Speaker 2: to see DePaula, Dodgers fans see DePaula earlier than we
- 8:39Speaker 2: probably would have. This is a pretty unprecedented decision by
- 8:42Speaker 2: the Dodgers to call him up with just two and
- 8:44Speaker 2: a half weeks in the regular season remaining. But in
- 8:47Speaker 2: terms of if it's a good thing, I don't know
- 8:49Speaker 2: if I can buy into that because there are just
- 8:51Speaker 2: so many questions where the You know, Freddie Freeman not
- 8:54Speaker 2: feeling 100%, though it's very unlikely he's going to need
- 8:57Speaker 2: an I.L. stick. Will Smith coming back from a long
- 9:00Speaker 2: absence on the I.L. and no Dalton Rushing, who's also
- 9:02Speaker 2: on the I.L. to kind of spell him behind the plate.
- 9:05Speaker 2: There are a lot of moving parts here where this
- 9:06Speaker 2: is clearly not the preferred Dodgers active roster. But I
- 9:10Speaker 2: think we have to remember with this club, even when
- 9:13Speaker 2: they're all healthy, rarely is this 26-man roster in September
- 9:16Speaker 2: what we see in October. So best case scenario, the
- 9:19Speaker 2: silver lining, Josue DiPaola gets his feet wet in the
- 9:22Speaker 2: big leagues, maybe with the way that you can, most
- 9:25Speaker 2: teams or most players, if they're not up by September 1st,
- 9:27Speaker 2: aren't eligible for the postseason because there's some IL stints
- 9:30Speaker 2: involved that might not be the case with him. He
- 9:32Speaker 2: comes out, catches fire early on. You have maybe another
- 9:36Speaker 2: bat that can be in your postseason mix. But the
- 9:38Speaker 2: big thing for me is the Dodgers need to rest
- 9:40Speaker 2: Otani first Is two weeks enough for him to do that?
- 9:43Speaker 2: And can he refine his footing in the three, four-day
- 9:45Speaker 2: runway before the playoffs start?
- 9:47Speaker 6: All right, Katie, I'm going to have a question and
- 9:50Speaker 6: a comment about one of your tweets. But first, we
- 9:52Speaker 6: want to hear from hot sheet, hot sheet, JJ Cooper,
- 9:57Speaker 6: who's going to give us a little bit of a
- 9:58Speaker 6: scatting report on DePaulo.
- 10:01Speaker 8: I don't know how much impact he's going to have
- 10:02Speaker 8: this year, and we'll get into that. But in the
- 10:04Speaker 8: long run, Jose DePaulo, the Dodgers outfielder coming up to
- 10:07Speaker 8: the big leagues is a very big deal because Jose
- 10:10Speaker 8: DePaulo is as good a hitter as we've had in
- 10:14Speaker 8: the minor leagues this year. The closest analog I can
- 10:17Speaker 8: make to what DePaulo has done this year is what
- 10:19Speaker 8: Kevin McGonigal did last year. The only difference is, DePaula
- 10:22Speaker 8: did it all year in AA, whereas McGonigal made it
- 10:25Speaker 8: up to AA for the second half of the season
- 10:27Speaker 8: last year. But we're talking those kind of in-zone miss rates,
- 10:31Speaker 8: those kind of overall miss rates, chase rates, hard hit rates.
- 10:36Speaker 8: DePaula hits the ball really hard, but as a left-handed
- 10:39Speaker 8: hitter who really knows the strike zone, who does not
- 10:41Speaker 8: swing and miss, he's also, probably more importantly, maddening for
- 10:47Speaker 8: a pitcher to face. Because there's just no easy way
- 10:50Speaker 8: to get him out.
- 10:50Speaker 6: All right. So JJ told us he's going to be
- 10:53Speaker 6: the next rookie of the year, obviously, because if he's
- 10:56Speaker 6: going to be Kevin McGonigal, we don't know what he's
- 10:58Speaker 6: going to be. But in your tweet, the second part
- 11:01Speaker 6: of your tweet, when you were talking about Shohei Otani's health,
- 11:03Speaker 6: you said, worth noting, the Dodgers generally refrained from calling
- 11:07Speaker 6: up top prospects unless there's a clear route for consistent
- 11:11Speaker 6: playing times. Dalton Rushing would like to argue with what
- 11:14Speaker 6: you have to say, and do you think they've learned
- 11:16Speaker 6: from that, and this is why they've made the move?
- 11:20Speaker 6: Because Dalton Rushing was a guy that they got rid
- 11:22Speaker 6: of Barnes for, and he had to sit on the bench,
- 11:25Speaker 6: and you saw what he did early in the year
- 11:27Speaker 6: when Will Smith was out and had a ton of success.
- 11:29Speaker 6: Do you feel like they thought about this with Josue
- 11:32Speaker 6: when they called him up?
- 11:34Speaker 2: I think there are little different circumstances between rushing's call-up
- 11:37Speaker 2: and Josue de Paula's call-up. This was out of necessity.
- 11:40Speaker 2: They had really obviously tried very hard not to put
- 11:43Speaker 2: Otani on the IL. This was their last resort. And
- 11:47Speaker 2: when you're looking at who they have in AAA, it's
- 11:50Speaker 2: clear that they felt the best option to keep them
- 11:52Speaker 2: winning ballgames and to give them the best chance to
- 11:54Speaker 2: win is de Paula. Also, he needs to be on
- 11:57Speaker 2: the 40-man roster. at the end of the year anyway
- 11:59Speaker 2: to protect him. So if they were going to put
- 12:01Speaker 2: him on the 40 man in November, you might as well,
- 12:03Speaker 2: if you find an opportunity to do so in September,
- 12:05Speaker 2: just do it now and see what he can do
- 12:06Speaker 2: in this small sample size in the big leagues. If
- 12:09Speaker 2: Otani wasn't going on the IL, we were not going
- 12:11Speaker 2: to see DePaula. This was something that Clearly, after Wednesday,
- 12:14Speaker 2: when Shohei wasn't in the lineup, the Dodgers front office
- 12:16Speaker 2: came together and said, we're going to need to fill him.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Who's our best chance at being the best productive DH?
- 12:21Speaker 2: With all respect to those guys in AAA, it's DePaula,
- 12:24Speaker 2: as JJ Cooper just said, one of the best hit
- 12:26Speaker 2: tools in all of baseball. So it's a little different
- 12:29Speaker 2: because this is out of necessity. And I'm not sure
- 12:31Speaker 2: what after the next two weeks, that's what his runway
- 12:33Speaker 2: is going to be, right? He's going to play every
- 12:35Speaker 2: day or almost every day until Shohei is back. And
- 12:39Speaker 2: if he was going to be added to the 40-man
- 12:40Speaker 2: roster anyway, why not do it now? And let's be real,
- 12:43Speaker 2: the optics of putting Ohtani on the IL, especially after
- 12:46Speaker 2: the front office, general manager Brandon Gomes, denied that Ohtani
- 12:50Speaker 2: looked any kind of compromised earlier in the week, doesn't
- 12:53Speaker 2: look great, especially after they've made it very clear that
- 12:55Speaker 2: they don't want him to go there. You can catch
- 12:57Speaker 2: the bull a little bit by calling up a top
- 12:59Speaker 2: prospect that most fans have wanted to see all season long.
- 13:03Speaker 7: Wow.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Okay.
- 13:04Speaker 4: So the Dodgers... Keep doing it. Katie, how do they
- 13:07Speaker 4: keep doing it? How do they keep finding these guys?
- 13:09Speaker 4: Is it top prospect, top hit tool? In baseball, there's
- 13:12Speaker 4: draft low.
- 13:14Speaker 5: They don't, you know.
- 13:15Speaker 6: Salary cap.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Salary cap, that's right. But how do they keep doing this?
- 13:19Speaker 4: How do they keep finding these guys where no matter
- 13:21Speaker 4: who they call.
- 13:22Speaker 5: Up is a top prospect, top prospect.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Top prospect? Okay, 29 other fan bases don't want to
- 13:28Speaker 2: hear it. Because rightfully, I understand the long-term look is
- 13:32Speaker 2: to look at what the Dodgers are spending. But they're
- 13:34Speaker 2: spending a lot of money behind the scenes, whether it's
- 13:37Speaker 2: pro scouting, international scouting, player development. Osweita Paula was an
- 13:41Speaker 2: international free agent signing in 2022. The Dodgers are so
- 13:45Speaker 2: good at building a foundation that allows them to go
- 13:48Speaker 2: out and yes, when you can spend essentially whatever you want,
- 13:50Speaker 2: that helps too. I'm not downplaying that. But what they've
- 13:53Speaker 2: done behind the scenes in pro scouting, amateur scouting, international scouting,
- 13:57Speaker 2: and then developing their players into one of the top
- 13:59Speaker 2: farm systems in baseball, despite continuously, continually drafting low, that
- 14:04Speaker 2: is a sign of a winning organization. And this is
- 14:05Speaker 2: what Andrew Friedman excelled at when he was leading the
- 14:08Speaker 2: Tampa Bay Rays and obviously much different market. You have
- 14:11Speaker 2: to have a strong infrastructure for your minor league system
- 14:13Speaker 2: if you want to compete in Tampa Bay. In Los Angeles,
- 14:16Speaker 2: you can go out and buy guys, sure. But if
- 14:19Speaker 2: you don't have that infrastructure or that foundation coming up underneath,
- 14:23Speaker 2: it's really easy to kind of see that fall apart.
- 14:25Speaker 2: It's why you're seeing teams like the Mets spend a
- 14:27Speaker 2: lot of money and not win. The Dodgers are really
- 14:30Speaker 2: good at making sure every single part of their ball club,
- 14:33Speaker 2: they're allocating the right resources to, and they have some
- 14:35Speaker 2: of the best people in player development and scouting available.
- 14:39Speaker 2: helping build that foundation so that when Shelly Otani hits
- 14:41Speaker 2: the aisle, there's still someone that you're excited about to
- 14:44Speaker 2: make his major league debut on Friday in this top prospect,
- 14:47Speaker 2: one of the top prospects in all of baseball.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Katie, they need to cap.
- 14:52Speaker 5: A lot of teams are getting rid of pro scouts
- 14:54Speaker 5: and all that.
- 14:54Speaker 4: And the Dodgers are like, yeah, we'll keep adding them
- 14:56Speaker 4: because we can make smart trades and we can develop
- 14:59Speaker 4: our guys better if we have more resources.
- 15:01Speaker 5: So maybe they'll put a cap on those stuff too.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Maybe on how many scouts you can have, how many
- 15:05Speaker 4: front office workers you can have.
- 15:06Speaker 5: We'll just cap everything at this point, but.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I want to make, Cap wins.
- 15:09Speaker 3: What's that?
- 15:10Speaker 1: Cap wins.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Oh.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Too many wins.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Too many wins. Too many championships.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Too many wins.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Katie, before we let you go, I have to say this.
- 15:17Speaker 4: You know, it says on the bottom, Dodgers territory host.
- 15:20Speaker 4: The other day, I did a Braves-Dodgers game in Atlanta.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Walk into the Dodgers booth, and guess who's on the screen?
- 15:28Speaker 4: Katie Wu doing Dodgers territory.
- 15:30Speaker 5: So, apparently, even– Oh, wow.
- 15:32Speaker 6: Wow.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Did we just lose AJ at the perfect time?
- 15:41Speaker 2: That could not have worked out well for me because
- 15:43Speaker 2: that was going to be a roast, and I wasn't
- 15:45Speaker 2: prepared for it. But baseball gods are on my side today, guys.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Wow.
- 15:50Speaker 6: You win today, Katie.
- 15:51Speaker 3: This is the best. You win today, Katie. I'm back.
- 15:54Speaker 3: I'm back. I win today, AJ.
- 15:56Speaker 7: Too late.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I'm back. Too late.
- 15:58Speaker 4: No, I did the Dodgers game a couple weeks ago,
- 16:01Speaker 4: and I walk into the Dodgers booth, and on the
- 16:04Speaker 4: screen is Katie's face on Dodgers territory.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Dodgers employees were watching Katie.
- 16:09Speaker 3: On the TV.
- 16:09Speaker 5: So you must be doing something.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Right, Katie. I don't know.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm doing something right or they're
- 16:14Speaker 2: just like, what is she going to say today? That's
- 16:15Speaker 2: going to make us mad. Maybe, but maybe that is
- 16:17Speaker 2: doing it right. I don't know, guys.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 16:20Speaker 4: I would have to say there was some fluttering eyelashes
- 16:22Speaker 4: as Kirsten Watson.
- 16:27Speaker 1: AJ's breaking up again. Katie, thanks for joining us.
- 16:33Speaker 5: You're the best.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Love Dodgers territory and plenty of Katie articles on, Paola
- 16:38Speaker 1: and Otani in the athletic coming through as well.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Appreciate you, Katie. Talk soon.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Thanks, guys.

- 17:46Speaker 1: Hey, Friday marks 25 years since the 9-11 attacks, a
- 17:50Speaker 1: moment in time that we will never forget. And to
- 17:54Speaker 1: think back to what happened there and how baseball tied
- 17:57Speaker 1: into it, MLB Network is debuting a documentary tonight, Thursday night,
- 18:01Speaker 1: about the Time and Baseball's Place in Helping Heal Those Wounds.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Todd Ziel, a big part of that project, and he's
- 18:08Speaker 1: about to join us. Before that, let's get a little
- 18:10Speaker 1: preview of when America took the field on MLB Network.
- 18:16Speaker 4: 25 years later, it's still in the forefront of my mind.
- 18:24Speaker 4: 25 years, but it always feels like it just happened.
- 18:29Speaker 6: Feels like yesterday right now. The worst thing that happened
- 18:33Speaker 6: to this country then brought out the best in the country.
- 18:36Speaker 6: And I think you saw that in ballparks.
- 18:39Speaker 3: The question has already been answered. Should we be here? Yes.
- 18:47Speaker 6: I remember like, we're going to play baseball?
- 18:51Speaker 7: And now when I look back and here we are
- 18:53Speaker 7: 25 years later, it's like, yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Shea Stadium has something to smile about.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Baseball brought comfort.
- 19:03Speaker 7: And it was a vehicle to get back to life
- 19:05Speaker 7: as we knew it, as heavy as our hearts were.
- 19:11Speaker 5: The chills that I had just seeing people out there
- 19:14Speaker 5: enjoying the game made a difference for the guys on
- 19:17Speaker 5: the field.
- 19:19Speaker 8: And you needed something to feel good again, and baseball
- 19:22Speaker 8: was the first thing.
- 19:24Speaker 3: We needed the escape. We needed the diversion.
- 19:26Speaker 5: We needed the games.
- 19:29Speaker 4: We're going to get back.
- 19:29Speaker 3: We're going to dust ourselves off.
- 19:32Speaker 6: And in September, we played baseball, and that's what we did.
- 19:34Speaker 8: I will never be part of a more patriotic experience
- 19:40Speaker 8: in my life.
- 19:42Speaker 2: We needed our leader to be there. He was there.
- 19:44Speaker 2: It gives me goosebumps right now sitting there watching it.
- 19:48Speaker 5: All for one, one for all.
- 19:49Speaker 3: This is our sport. This is our pastime.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I think what baseball did at the time, we put
- 19:58Speaker 2: a small Band-Aid on a big wall.
- 20:03Speaker 1: When America took the field, looking forward to watching that,
- 20:06Speaker 1: And Todd Zeal is joining us right now. Yes, over
- 20:09Speaker 1: 2000 career hits, but remembers and obviously was a part
- 20:14Speaker 1: of that moment in time. So you can give us
- 20:16Speaker 1: the firsthand experience of what it was like to be
- 20:18Speaker 1: on the field. Todd, great to have you on here
- 20:20Speaker 1: and congrats on being a part of this documentary. Super
- 20:23Speaker 1: important for people to not forget what happened during that
- 20:26Speaker 1: time too, but I'll give you the floor to start here.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Tell me what people can expect to get a little
- 20:31Speaker 1: taste of in the documentary.
- 20:34Speaker 7: Yeah, well, first of all, thanks for having me on, guys.
- 20:36Speaker 7: I appreciate it watching you guys all the time.
- 20:39Speaker 3: And AJ, fair. Craig Biggio, catcher.
- 20:43Speaker 7: Even though I played 2,000 games at third base, I
- 20:47Speaker 7: still played those positions like a catcher, as most of
- 20:49Speaker 7: you guys remember.
- 20:50Speaker 3: So, you know, fair enough. Not really a.
- 20:53Speaker 7: Catcher with all those hits. Yeah, it blocks those out. Anyway,
- 20:58Speaker 7: that said, look, I'm proud to be a part of this.
- 21:01Speaker 7: I'm an executive producer on this that It's something that
- 21:05Speaker 7: started a couple of years ago, just having a conversation
- 21:08Speaker 7: with a friend about, you know, what it was like
- 21:13Speaker 7: to be a New York Met, what it was like
- 21:16Speaker 7: to be in New York after the attacks. And the
- 21:21Speaker 7: fact that we kind of got called into action by
- 21:26Speaker 7: Bobby V and, you know, the New York Met's without
- 21:30Speaker 7: really knowing what we were getting ourselves into and the
- 21:33Speaker 7: feelings of going down to ground zero and trading a
- 21:36Speaker 7: hat that turned into something symbolic and just being a
- 21:42Speaker 7: part of that aftermath. I think we realized that there
- 21:45Speaker 7: was some stories to be told and there were some
- 21:47Speaker 7: stories that we all knew that the Piazza home run
- 21:52Speaker 7: on 921 and George W. throwing the first pitch in
- 21:55Speaker 7: game three of the World Series. But I think the
- 21:58Speaker 7: thing that was interesting and exciting for me and what
- 22:01Speaker 7: ended up being sort of the genesis of making this
- 22:05Speaker 7: documentary with MLB is that there was a lot of
- 22:07Speaker 7: stories outside of New York that involved the thread of
- 22:12Speaker 7: baseball that have still continued that thread through relationships after
- 22:21Speaker 7: 9-11 that have lasted 25 years.
- 22:24Speaker 3: So that's what you're going to see.
- 22:25Speaker 7: You're going to see some things that you've seen before,
- 22:29Speaker 7: and you're going to have some of the notes that
- 22:31Speaker 7: are powerful from the things that you have seen before,
- 22:34Speaker 7: and then there's going to be some things that are
- 22:36Speaker 7: sort of unexpected but have that thread of baseball.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Todd, we were in Detroit when this happened, so I
- 22:47Speaker 4: was on the twins at the time we were in
- 22:48Speaker 4: Detroit and I, we'll get into it more. But what
- 22:50Speaker 4: I wanted to start with is in this documentary, one
- 22:53Speaker 4: of the big moments that people remember is the Mike
- 22:55Speaker 4: Piazza home run.
- 22:56Speaker 7: Right.
- 22:57Speaker 4: And I've talked to Mike about this and he's very
- 22:59Speaker 4: open about this. He was like, it was almost like
- 23:02Speaker 4: I had to hit a home run that night and
- 23:04Speaker 4: he hits the home run and he swings. And I
- 23:06Speaker 4: remember him saying like the, the ball. And I think
- 23:09Speaker 4: it was car say through it. He like, you're like,
- 23:10Speaker 4: it just lit up.
- 23:12Speaker 7: Right.
- 23:12Speaker 5: And he's like, Oh my gosh.
- 23:13Speaker 3: And he swung.
- 23:14Speaker 4: And he's like, that just happened. Are there any other
- 23:17Speaker 4: moments that players talk about like that? Because that's the.
- 23:20Speaker 5: One, obviously, that I remember just because I think you
- 23:21Speaker 5: guys were the first game back. And as a player,
- 23:24Speaker 5: everyone's watching. Mike hits the huge home run.
- 23:26Speaker 4: And were there any other players that had moments like that?
- 23:30Speaker 7: You know, that's a really good question because that one
- 23:33Speaker 7: was so iconic because it was the first game back
- 23:37Speaker 7: in New York. And it was a symbolic game. We're
- 23:40Speaker 7: playing against our arch nemesis, the Braves, that had beat
- 23:44Speaker 7: up on us throughout parts of that year, we sort
- 23:47Speaker 7: of absolutely organically hugged on the field before the game
- 23:53Speaker 7: and realized going in that this was not a regular
- 23:55Speaker 7: baseball game. There's security everywhere. There's Secret Service. We had
- 23:59Speaker 7: no idea if the fans would show up. And so
- 24:02Speaker 7: when that moment came, it was almost like, yeah, this
- 24:05Speaker 7: is that destined moment that we needed.
- 24:08Speaker 3: That had to happen. And of course, it's Mike. Of course,
- 24:12Speaker 3: it's at Shea Stadium.
- 24:15Speaker 7: And that sort of iconic moment I don't think could
- 24:18Speaker 7: be matched anywhere else. That said, you know, there was
- 24:22Speaker 7: a couple of huge walk-off home runs in that New
- 24:26Speaker 7: York Diamondback World Series that seemed to feel like it
- 24:30Speaker 7: was perpetuating that moment from Mike's 9-21 home run, and
- 24:36Speaker 7: I think there was a city that was, you know,
- 24:39Speaker 7: at least in some ways, helped to heal through baseball
- 24:44Speaker 7: in those moments. And I think everybody sort of in
- 24:48Speaker 7: America started believing that, okay, of course, this is the Yankees'
- 24:52Speaker 7: destined year.
- 24:53Speaker 3: This is New York's year to get the crown. And
- 24:58Speaker 3: it didn't happen.
- 24:59Speaker 7: But there were some of those moments in New York,
- 25:03Speaker 7: but the Diamondbacks ended up taking it away out in Arizona.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Kratz football season is back and Fabletics knows all about it.
- 25:13Speaker 1: They just paired with the number one wide receiver in
- 25:16Speaker 1: the NFL, Jamar Chase, on a new collection.
- 25:19Speaker 6: He's going to catch some footballs. You're going to catch
- 25:22Speaker 6: some deals when you go to Fabletics because this is
- 25:25Speaker 6: all affordable stuff, but the quality is through the roof. Comfortability,
- 25:29Speaker 6: like it is ridiculous. Go for it.
- 25:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:32Speaker 1: It's about feeling good all day and you need to
- 25:35Speaker 1: feel more comfortable in your athletic clothing since you're wearing
- 25:38Speaker 1: it all day. It's not just at the gym anymore.

- 26:05Speaker 1: to 80% off everything as a new VIP.
- 26:09Speaker 6: Were you able to, in the documentary, capture the lead-up
- 26:14Speaker 6: from the time of the attacks to that Piazza moment?
- 26:18Speaker 6: Were you able to capture that with what you guys,
- 26:21Speaker 6: what the coaches, front office, players were feeling leading up
- 26:25Speaker 6: to that moment?
- 26:27Speaker 3: I think there's some pretty good dialogue and discussion that.
- 26:32Speaker 3: You know, helps to put us back in that place.
- 26:35Speaker 7: And one of the things that we all kind of
- 26:37Speaker 7: recognize that 25 years is a long time. It doesn't
- 26:41Speaker 7: feel like 25 years. This is something that, you know,
- 26:44Speaker 7: as we've talked about before in history, this is kind
- 26:47Speaker 7: of our generation's historical moment where you hear, you used
- 26:50Speaker 7: to hear people talk about, they knew exactly where they
- 26:53Speaker 7: were in Pearl Harbor day, or they knew exactly where
- 26:56Speaker 7: they were when JFK was shot. This is that moment
- 27:00Speaker 7: for us where I knew exactly where I was, exactly
- 27:03Speaker 7: what I was thinking, exactly what I was feeling. And
- 27:06Speaker 7: so 25 years has seemed to fly by. And so
- 27:10Speaker 7: those moments from the time of the attacks to the
- 27:14Speaker 7: time of the 921 moment for Mike, at least us
- 27:20Speaker 7: guys that, you know, handful of guys with the Mets
- 27:23Speaker 7: had made numerous visits to ground zero and spent time
- 27:26Speaker 7: with the families at the Javits Center had done you know,
- 27:29Speaker 7: work with FDNY families and felt like we were a
- 27:34Speaker 7: part of this small healing process. And so some of
- 27:38Speaker 7: that's captured in our dialogue and just kind of thinking
- 27:41Speaker 7: back on those first days down to ground zero and wondering,
- 27:45Speaker 7: why are we here? We're baseball players. These people are
- 27:48Speaker 7: going through things that are so traumatic. We can't, we
- 27:51Speaker 7: shouldn't even be here. But baseball, once again, is kind
- 27:55Speaker 7: of that thread that they looked at us and said, hey,
- 27:58Speaker 7: I can get a little bit of relief from these
- 28:01Speaker 7: feelings that I'm having.
- 28:02Speaker 3: And so we do discuss that.
- 28:04Speaker 7: I think that going back to Pittsburgh to play the
- 28:06Speaker 7: first couple of games back felt really weird for us.
- 28:09Speaker 3: We thought we should be back in New York. We
- 28:11Speaker 3: didn't think we should be playing baseball. And so those games,
- 28:14Speaker 3: I couldn't tell you what happened in those games. It
- 28:16Speaker 3: was just a blur.
- 28:18Speaker 7: I could tell you that we wore the hats and
- 28:20Speaker 7: that we were ready to come back to New York.
- 28:22Speaker 7: But aside from that, those moments between 9-11 and 9-21
- 28:27Speaker 7: were sort of a blur, but we all have some
- 28:31Speaker 7: lasting memories of some pieces that are non-baseball related during
- 28:35Speaker 7: that time.
- 28:37Speaker 4: Todd, that's one thing I wanted to touch on. I
- 28:39Speaker 4: mentioned I can tell you exactly where I was. I
- 28:41Speaker 4: can tell you exactly what I was doing when I
- 28:44Speaker 4: heard what was going on. And then, you know, so
- 28:47Speaker 4: many players and so many people that remember that. Like
- 28:51Speaker 4: you said, Pearl Harbor, you said this moment. But for
- 28:54Speaker 4: our generation, every person I talk to, oh, you know, 9-11,
- 28:57Speaker 4: where were you? They can tell you the exact moment,
- 28:59Speaker 4: the exact thing they were doing, everything, right? And I'm
- 29:02Speaker 4: sure in this documentary, the players will say, man, we
- 29:06Speaker 4: were here and we heard about this. And I can't
- 29:08Speaker 4: even imagine. I know the White Sox are in New
- 29:10Speaker 4: York getting ready to play the Yankees. And I've talked
- 29:12Speaker 4: to Kenny Williams and I talked to Paul Canerico and
- 29:15Speaker 4: Mark Burley, what they were doing on that morning. I mean,
- 29:18Speaker 4: we're players and people in general. This is just a
- 29:21Speaker 4: photograph in their mind that just will never go away, right?
- 29:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it really is.
- 29:25Speaker 7: And I think that the thing that's interesting and we
- 29:29Speaker 7: know each other, we've talked, we know that we've remained
- 29:33Speaker 7: involved over the 25 years. It's not like, oh, that
- 29:36Speaker 7: all happened and um you know it went away and
- 29:39Speaker 7: it's not thought of since i mean i do stuff
- 29:41Speaker 7: with the fire department every year i've said we have
- 29:44Speaker 7: made great relationships with people that i met through the
- 29:47Speaker 7: most trying times in their lives um and so the
- 29:51Speaker 7: thing that's been interesting to me as i've been going
- 29:54Speaker 7: down this path and getting you know kind of you know,
- 29:58Speaker 7: adding information to this documentary is that there's a generation
- 30:03Speaker 7: that's below us that maybe they were kids or hadn't
- 30:07Speaker 7: been born yet.
- 30:08Speaker 3: And they're learning about.
- 30:09Speaker 7: 9-11 through history class and through the stories passed down
- 30:15Speaker 7: by their parents. And it's interesting how it differs in
- 30:19Speaker 7: some ways from what I remember at the time. And
- 30:22Speaker 7: I think that has always been one of the things
- 30:25Speaker 7: that's compelled me to make sure that we continue to
- 30:27Speaker 7: tell these stories and make a documentary like this, where
- 30:30Speaker 7: you're getting the actual recollection of what happened so that
- 30:35Speaker 7: you never forget this, the most simple cliche in a
- 30:39Speaker 7: sense motto that there ever was, but it couldn't be
- 30:42Speaker 7: more true.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Never forget, right? That's, that's why we do this. That's
- 30:45Speaker 3: why we talk about it.
- 30:46Speaker 7: That's why we revisit every year because it's such an
- 30:50Speaker 7: important moment in time that, I don't want anybody to
- 30:54Speaker 7: ever forget. And I want the kids that weren't around
- 30:57Speaker 7: to be able to have the perspective to understand it
- 31:00Speaker 7: the way we understood it at the time.
- 31:02Speaker 3: All right.
- 31:03Speaker 6: You guys missed the playoffs that year. Were you cheering
- 31:06Speaker 6: for the Yankees in the world series? Just like a
- 31:09Speaker 6: little bit.
- 31:11Speaker 7: I have to say that I was, I was moved
- 31:15Speaker 7: by what was going on in New York, especially the,
- 31:19Speaker 7: you know, they, they were down, they come back. There's,
- 31:22Speaker 7: improbable wins night after night and walk-offs where the place
- 31:26Speaker 7: went crazy. And I thought, okay, this is great for
- 31:29Speaker 7: New York City. That's great for me. That's great for
- 31:33Speaker 7: this country. And so, yeah, I think I had that
- 31:37Speaker 7: sort of Yankee fandom for that moment in time.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 31:43Speaker 7: I thought the way it ended, my thought the way
- 31:47Speaker 7: it ended is I wonder how Luis Gonzalez feels as
- 31:51Speaker 7: the the World Series hero knocking in the winning run
- 31:54Speaker 7: against Mariano Rivera and knowing that a lot of America
- 31:58Speaker 7: wanted the Yankees to find a way to win this
- 32:00Speaker 7: because of what happened in New York City. And we
- 32:04Speaker 7: get some interesting perspectives on things like that when we've
- 32:07Speaker 7: talked to people through the process of making this documentary.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Well, Todd, we're out of time.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I want to bring you back at some point, though,
- 32:14Speaker 1: to talk about other stuff. But this was important. Wanted
- 32:17Speaker 1: to get you on here, plus the Doc's Coming out tonight,
- 32:20Speaker 1: 10 o'clock Eastern for people catching this right now on Thursday.
- 32:24Speaker 1: And then again on Friday night after the Mets-Yankees game
- 32:27Speaker 1: on MLB Network. Todd, appreciate you, man.
- 32:29Speaker 7: Good to see you.
- 32:31Speaker 3: You too, buddy. Thank you guys for having me on.
- 32:33Speaker 3: I appreciate the work.
