Latest / The Uncensored Catholic / Show 27: Why Christians Do Not Follow Torah Law, part 3 - The Epistle of Barnabas
Transcript
- 0:59Hey, welcome today's show. Today we were going to start getting into the
- 1:03writings of the early Church fathers on why Christians no longer followed Jewish law,
- 1:11Mosaic law, Tora law, whatever you want to call it, and Jewish
- 1:14traditions. There was an extreme break in the early Church in the very first
- 1:22days of the Church, literally with the apostles, and you know, almost
- 1:32all the apostles were martyred. And I can't remember which one right now.
- 1:38I think it may have been Saint James. I'm gonna have to look it
- 1:41up, was you know, actually witnessing for Christ sharing the Gospel at the
- 1:48Tempo in Jerusalem and was taken up and thrown off the top of it to
- 1:53his death. There was no way jape or form were religious Jews able to
- 2:00accept the Gospel and maintain Judaism. Most Jews, at least half of them
- 2:07at least converted in the first couple of centuries to Christianity through the preaching of
- 2:13the Gospel, and the Christians were in no way, shape or form maintaining
- 2:20Jewish laws and traditions. I hope I can do this in two shows.
- 2:25It may take three. You know, one thing about about Catholics is they
- 2:30tend to be wordy. Catholics write, and they tend to write in great
- 2:36detail traditionally, especially in the early centuries. I am just a simple Southern
- 2:42man. I'm very plain spoken. I guess sort of the format of how
- 2:46I do these shows I give you this long passage and then I sum it
- 2:52up in just a few words. So it makes it a little easier for
- 2:55the modern mind to comprehend. But you have to remember at the Apostles and
- 3:02most of the early Church fathers were Jewish, and if there's anyone more precise
- 3:10with language a Catholic scholar, it is a Jewish scholar. These passages are
- 3:21going to be a little long, okay, and I'm going to sum up
- 3:23some things. I'm gonna skip around. I'm not gonna give you a dissertation.
- 3:29I mean, like Saint Barnabas is a really good example. Saint Barnabas
- 3:35may have been Saint Paul's disciple, his follower, that's mentioned many times in
- 3:40the New Testament. Modern scholarship tends to think, though, that the writings
- 3:47of Saint Barnabas were actually a student or a disciple of the original Barnabas It
- 3:53was very common at the time to attribute your work to your teacher, a
- 4:01sign of humility, but it also gave credence to what you're saying. It
- 4:06said essentially, this is where this is coming from. So while we do
- 4:12not know whether this was actually Barnabas himself or one of his closest students,
- 4:21it is a clear representation of what early Christians believed and how and why they
- 4:30broke away from Jewish tradition. Literally, why the apostles were still alive and
- 4:36under the gui guidance and authority of the Apostles. As I said before,
- 4:43you only have to pull up the DK that's d I d AC, which
- 4:48means the Teachings of the Twelve to find the first manual of Christian belief in
- 4:55worship, written even before the Bible was completed. This was like this was
- 5:01the first Catechism, you know, as they were still composing the books of
- 5:06the New Testament, they knew they had to have a solid guide for Christian
- 5:14worship. What day do we go to church? When you know, how
- 5:16do we go to church? What do we do at church? What are
- 5:18the tenants the maintenance of our belief? It's a very short document very available
- 5:24online, which is wonderful. Uh. You know, my ancestors did not
- 5:28have this. I feel confident that my ancestor, who was on the Mayflower,
- 5:33who was obviously looking for the true Church, if he had been given
- 5:38the d K, would have had to become Catholic. His conscience would have
- 5:42led him that way. Now maybe I'm wrong. You know, he was
- 5:45a fitz Randolph and pretty impressive man, as was his son. They came
- 5:55over on the second voyage of the Mayflower. But you know, you could
- 5:59also say contemporaneously, another of my ancestors seems to be I'm gonna put this
- 6:06in quote, seems to be John Carroll, the first bishop Catholic Bishop of
- 6:12the United States, who I believe was what nephew to Charles Carroll, the
- 6:16only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, and brother to the representative from
- 6:24Maryland who signed the Constitution and worked closely with George Washington on many things.
- 6:30I say, seems to be because my aunts I have three ancestors with almost
- 6:38the exact same name. They all lived within thirty miles of each other in
- 6:45a very rural part of North Carolina, one of whom was the grandson of
- 6:49John Carroll, and I mean, you know no doubt about it. The
- 6:55courthouse in the county was burned three times in the American revel illusion, in
- 7:00the War of eighteen twelve, and in the Civil War. So while it
- 7:03is almost impossible to think that these three Carroll men, who lived within a
- 7:12couple of decades of each other, within just a few miles of each other,
- 7:16were not related, I cannot dot the eyes and cross the t's on
- 7:20that. I feel very comfortable in claiming kinship too, you know, the
- 7:30first Catholic Bishop of the United States and Charles Carroll. But I could not
- 7:34prove it in a court of law. We could say I could prove it
- 7:38by empirical evidence, but I could not bring in the actual family histories because
- 7:46when the courthouses were burned, all the documents were left. Marriage were lost,
- 7:50I mean marriage certificates, property ownership. I can't even find the graves
- 8:00of several of my ancestors, one of whom he and his wife and his
- 8:09children. It appears that their graves may actually be at the bottom of a
- 8:11lake. Because after the Civil War, a what we would call carpetbagger,
- 8:18a person from the north with a lot of money, came into the empoverished
- 8:22South and bought the land that they owned and formed an amusement park on it,
- 8:26and seems to have dammed up the river sort of and put a large
- 8:31lake over the family cemetery. So, but the thing is, even the
- 8:39Carols in the seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds, even though they were the
- 8:46probably the most prominent Catholic family in the entire United States, did not have
- 8:52access to the dak. It had not been well formally discovered and approved of
- 9:01yet. And now we have it, and it's absolutely amazing. But that's
- 9:05a short, succinct document. We get into Saint Barnabas, and we're getto
- 9:11Saint Justin Martyr and so many and I guess the only caveat I need to
- 9:18put on this is, do remember at this time the Christians were literally being
- 9:24hunted down and killed by the Jewish authorities, and persecuted by the Romans and
- 9:35rejected by the Greeks, and I mean, they were like almost at war
- 9:37for their survival. So when we do get to Barnabas, he's going to
- 9:41say some things that sound really harsh, even potentially anti Semitic. But we
- 9:48have to remember just like when we read Maccabees in the Old Testament, and
- 9:54we look at those their strong, bold nationalistic statements, and we were spect
- 10:00the Macabeans. I mean, they're fantastic, one of the best books of
- 10:03the Bible, such a tragedy that was stripped out of the Bible in the
- 10:07Protestants so called Reformation. These were people standing boldly and saying absolutely not.
- 10:16We are Christians now and we are no longer Jews. We may have Jewish
- 10:22heritage, you know that's genetically Jewish. Sure, all the Apostles, I
- 10:26think all of them and most of their followers were genetically Jewish. Jesus Christ
- 10:35himself is genetically Jewish. I mean, come on, this is not racial.
- 10:41What it is is we are now Christians and we no longer followed to
- 10:45the Jewish religion. And I have to point that out. Someone said today,
- 10:50you know, you seem like you're you need to be more clear that
- 10:54you're not criticizing the Jews. Well, okay, I'm just quoting Saint Paul
- 10:58when he said the Jews killed Christ. I'm not saying Jewish people are bad
- 11:03people. I think I think you got this right. So the writings of
- 11:11Saint Barnabas, and as I said, whether it's Barnabas himself or his student
- 11:18who wrote, come from about one hundred a D. One hundred a D.
- 11:24That's about the time. That's really like the dawn of the post Apostolic
- 11:33era. And if I'm not mistaken, the Apostle John he died about that
- 11:43time. I mean, he lived a very long life. He was I
- 11:45think the youngest of the Apostles, and I mean he this would have been
- 11:50contemporary essentially with the Apostles. This is from the epistle Barnabas, again about
- 11:58one one hundred a D. This is like one of the earliest Christian documents.
- 12:05All hell ye sons and daughters in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 12:09who loves us in peace. He calls him sons of daughters. Remember,
- 12:13Saint Paul says, rightly, you have called me a father to you.
- 12:18Well, when Protestants say, call no man father, and we have
- 12:20to explain, well, Jesus also said no, call no man rabbi,
- 12:24and call no man teacher. That doesn't exactly mean what you think it means.
- 12:28Otherwise you couldn't call your genetic father, father, daddy, dad,
- 12:37papa, whatever you call your dad, it would be the same through translation.
- 12:43And if you go to school, you would have no way of identifying
- 12:46the person who's instructing you. Here we have Barnabas saying, hell, all
- 12:52ye sons and daughters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
- 12:54loves us in peace. Seeing the divine fruits of righteousness abound among you,
- 13:01I rejoice exceedingly and above measure in your happy and honored spirits, because you
- 13:05have, with such effect, with such effect, receive the ingrafted spiritual gift.
- 13:11Wherefore I also inwardly rejoice all the more, hoping you to be saved,
- 13:16because I truly perceive in you the spirit poured forth from the rich love
- 13:18of the Lord. Your greatly desired appearance has thus filled me with astonishment.
- 13:24Okay, as I said, it's quite loquacious. He uses a lot of
- 13:28words, So let me kind of skip ahead of this rather long document to
- 13:33where he kind of, oh, shall we say, gets into combating the
- 13:39Judaizers, as Saint Paul called them. Since therefore the days are evil and
- 13:46Satan possesses the power of this world, we ought to give heed to ourselves
- 13:50and diligently inquired into the ordinances of the Lord. Fear and patience, then
- 13:54our helpers, of our faith and long suffering and continuance are things which fight
- 13:58on our side. While these remain pure in what respects the Lord, wisdom,
- 14:03understanding, science, and knowledge. Rejoice along with them, For he
- 14:07hath revealed to all of us by the prophets that he needs neither sacrifices,
- 14:11nor burnt offerings, nor oblation, saying this, what is the multitude of
- 14:16your sacrifices? Unto me, saith the Lord, I am full of burnt
- 14:20offerings and desire, Not the fat of lambs and the blood of bulls and
- 14:22goats. Not, when you come to appear before me, For who hath
- 14:26required these things at your hand? Tread no more my courts, Not though
- 14:31ye bring with you fine flower incenses, a vein and abomination to me,
- 14:37and your new moons and sabbaths I cannot endure. He has therefore abolished these
- 14:43things, that the new law of our Lord Jesus Christ is without the yoke
- 14:48of necessity, might have a human oblation. And again he says to them,
- 14:52did I command your fathers when they came out of the land of Egypt,
- 14:58to offer unto me any burnt offerings and sacrifices. But this, rather,
- 15:03I commanded them. Let no one of you cherish any evil in his
- 15:05heart against his neighbor, and love not the oath of falsehood. We ought,
- 15:11therefore, being possessed of understanding, to perceive the gracious intention of our
- 15:16Father. For he speaks to us, desirous that we, not going astray
- 15:20like them, should ask how we may approach him to us. Then he
- 15:24declares a sacrifice, pleasing to God, as a broken spirit, a smell
- 15:28of sweet savor to the Lord is a heart that glorifieth in Him that made
- 15:31it. We ought, therefore, brethren, carefully to inquire concerning our salvation,
- 15:37lest the wicked one, having made his interests by his seat, should
- 15:39hurl us forth from true life again, just as Saint Paul was saying in
- 15:46the Bible, no more, no more temple worship, no more sacrifices,
- 15:50no more toral law. What is required now as a new law. Because
- 15:56Jesus Christ killed, he took upon himself the penalty of the law, which
- 16:03is death, and with his death and resurrection killed the law of Moses of
- 16:08the Torah and brought us a new life and a new law in a new
- 16:12church. He says, then again, concerning these things, why do you
- 16:19fast to me on this day? Saith the Lord, that your voice should
- 16:22be heard with a cry. I have not chosen this fast, saith the
- 16:26Lord, that a man should humble his soul. Nor though ye bend your
- 16:30neck like a ring and put upon you sackcloth and ashes, will ye call
- 16:34it an acceptable fast to us? He saith, Behold, this is the
- 16:38fast I have chosen, saith the Lord, not that a man should humble
- 16:42his soul, but that he should lose every band of iniquity. Untie the
- 16:47fastenings of harsh agreements. Restore the liberty. Restore to liberty them that are
- 16:52bruised. Tear in pieces every unjust engagement. Feed the hungry with thy bread,
- 16:57Clothe the naked. When thou seeest bring the homeless into thy house,
- 17:02despise not the humble. If thou behold him and not turn away from the
- 17:06members of thine own family, then shall thy break forth, and thy healing
- 17:10shall quickly spring up, and righteousness shall go before thee, and the glory
- 17:14of God showing compassy and then thou shalt call God. Then thou shalt call,
- 17:19and God shall hear thee. Whilst they are yet speaking, he shall
- 17:22say, behold, I am with THEE. If thou take away from THEE
- 17:26the chain binding others and stretching forth at the hands to swear falsely and words
- 17:32of murmuring, and give cheerfully thy bread to the hungry, and show compassion
- 17:36to the soul that has been humbled to this end. Therefore, brethren,
- 17:40he is long suffering, foreseeing how the people whom He has prepared shall,
- 17:45with guilelessness believe in his beloved. For he revealed all things just beforehand,
- 17:51that we should not rush forward as rash acceptors of their laws, as we
- 17:56went through yesterday. The law has many points, many things you have to
- 18:02do, and if you violate one point of it, you violate the whole
- 18:04point of it. And when Jesus was asked what is necessary, he said,
- 18:08love God with all your heart, and love your neighbors yourself. That's
- 18:14just a sainct point of what the wishes said it. Therefore, behooves us,
- 18:18who inquire much concerning the events at hand, to search dealentisly into these
- 18:22things which are able to save us. Let us then utterly flee from all
- 18:27the works of iniquity, lest these should take hold of us. Let us
- 18:30hate the error of our present time, that we should set our love on
- 18:33the world to come. Let us not give loose reins to our soul,
- 18:38that it should have power to run with sinners in the wicked, less we
- 18:41become like them. The final summing block or source of danger approaches concerning which
- 18:45is written, as Enich says, for this end, the Lord has cut
- 18:51short the times and the days that his beloved may hasten, and he would
- 18:55come forth to the inheritance. And the prophet also speaks, thus ten kingdoms
- 18:59shall reign on earth, and a little king shall rise up after them,
- 19:02who shall subdue under the three kings in like manner. Daniel says concerning the
- 19:07same. And I've been held forth the beast, wicked and powerful and more
- 19:11savage than all the beasts of the earth, and how it sprung up for
- 19:14the tin horns and out of the little butting horn, and how it subdued
- 19:17under three of the great horns. You therefore understand, and this also a
- 19:22further beg of you, as being one of you, and is loving you
- 19:26both individually and collectively, more now than my own soul. Take keyed now
- 19:30to yourselves, and not be like some adding largely to your sins and saying
- 19:34the covenants both theirs and hours. That's a wordy as I said, this
- 19:44is a Jewish Catholic and there are going to be many run on sentences.
- 19:48But he's actually applying many of the prophetic words of the Old Testament that Protestants
- 19:56supply against the Catholic Church. And he's saying, no, the Old Covenant
- 20:06led to death. There's now a new people, a new nation, and
- 20:10new church. And you know, the end times began with the resurrection of
- 20:15Jesus Christ. The time is now short. Who knows how many tens or
- 20:18hundreds of thousands of years people have lived on earth. It had a long
- 20:22time to figure it out. We've only been Christians now for two thousand years.
- 20:29And he says, do not add to your sins, saying the Covenant
- 20:33is both. There's an hour saying that you have to follow the Torah as
- 20:40a Christian, or that the followers of the Torah can be Christians. But
- 20:47they thus finally lost it as after Moses had received it. He's saying,
- 20:52what was the gift given to the Jews was lost and had to be essentially
- 20:57put into laws that they had to uphold because they couldn't have the conversion of
- 21:03heart. Why couldn't they Not because of anything genetic, but because the Holy
- 21:07Spirit had not yet come that conversion of heart, that understanding of the Word
- 21:12of God only comes through the Holy Spirit. For the scripture saith and Moses
- 21:18was fastening in them out forty days and forty nights, and received the covenant
- 21:22from the Lord tables of stone written with the finger of the hand of the
- 21:25Lord, but turning away to idols, they lost it. For the Lord
- 21:29thus speaks to Moses. Moses, go down quickly, for the people whom
- 21:32Tho was brought out of the land of Egypt have transgressed. And Moses understood
- 21:36the meaning of the God and cast the two tables out of his hands,
- 21:40and their covenant was broken in order that the covenant of the beloved Jesus might
- 21:45be sealed upon our heart. Let's just focus on this few sentences for a
- 21:52minute. He's literally saying, and this is I guess one of them are
- 21:59harsh sayings of Barnabas when Moses was given the Ten Commandments that was to be
- 22:07the entirety of the law. As Catholics, we still believe in the Ten
- 22:11Commandments. They tell us what is and is not mortal sin. Okay,
- 22:17when the Hebrews the Jewish people went back to worshiping idols while Moses was still
- 22:25up there with God. I mean literally, they could see the cloud of
- 22:27God above them, right. He's saying that they rejected what God was giving
- 22:33them at the time, and that covenant was essentially broken when Moses threw down
- 22:38the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments were later written again, and that the
- 22:44entire law of the Torah, all the complexities of Leviticus, and everything that
- 22:48came after that, were because they could not uphold the law as given by
- 22:53Jesus. Love God with all your heart, and love your neighbors yourself.
- 22:56He says, you've heard it said, commit adultery, snap used, not
- 23:00steal. He says, the tin of Aments is still valid. But the
- 23:04new law I give you is to love God with all your heart and love
- 23:07your neighbor as yourself. Essentially, all the complexities of the total law were
- 23:14because of the rejection of the covenant given to the Jewish people by God through
- 23:21Moses. As I said, Barnabas is a controversial character. This is though,
- 23:27what the earliest Church believe. This is what was taught by the Apostles.
- 23:33And so while it may seem harsh, while it may seem even anti
- 23:37Semitic, while it may seem hard to understand, and I don't have an
- 23:41anti Semitic bone in my body, absolutely love the Jewish people. And I
- 23:48mean one of my favorite girlfriends that I used to day was a beautiful redheaded
- 23:56jew from California. And you know, her family was actually not religious,
- 24:02but they were the most charitable people I think I've ever met. They did
- 24:04more for helping the poor than really most Catholics, and I thought they were
- 24:10very good people, and we talked religion, and now I believe she did
- 24:17actually convert to Christianity. We kind of lost touch over the years after we
- 24:22stopped dating, but she was very close to that point when you know,
- 24:26we drifted apart. But in no way, shape or form do I have
- 24:30any problem with the Jews. It's not meant to be a racial thing.
- 24:33It is a historical event. When God gave to Moses the Ten Commandments as
- 24:38he was literally still there the people that he had just led out of Egypt,
- 24:45who has seen all these miracles, are down at the foot of the
- 24:48mountain, worshiping idols. And in this way of understanding all that toral law
- 24:55was given to that people that was so stiff necked as God often said,
- 24:59so hard hearted hearted, as the Bible often says, that they had to
- 25:03be forced into a rigorous law that was not God's will. I mean,
- 25:08God said, your sacrifices don't please me. What I want is the conversion
- 25:14of your heart. And that's what we find through Jesus Christ. And he
- 25:18goes on for a couple of paragraphs about resisting wickedness and not being proud,
- 25:22which is, you know, always a good thing, and he quotes many
- 25:26are called, and few who are chosen, And let's see for this end,
- 25:33the Lord endured to deliver his flesh up to corruption, that we may
- 25:37be sanctified through the remission of sins, which is affected by his blood of
- 25:41sprinkling. For it is written concerning him, partly in reference to Israel and
- 25:45partly to us, as the scripture saith us. He was wounded for our
- 25:48transgressions and bruised for our iniquities, and his stripes. With his stripes were
- 25:53healed, he was brought as a sheep slaughter and as a lamb, which
- 25:57is done before its shearer. Therefore, we ought to be deeply grateful to
- 26:02the Lord, because he has both made known to us these things that are
- 26:04past, and has given us wisdom concerning the present, and has not left
- 26:08us without understanding in regard to these things. And skip him forward us a
- 26:15little bit understand how it was that he endured to suffer at the hand of
- 26:22men. The prophets, having obtained grace from him, prophesied concerning him,
- 26:26and he, since it behooved him to appear in flesh that he might abolish
- 26:30death and reveal the resurrection from the dead, endured what he did in order
- 26:34that he might fulfill the promise made into the fathers everybody preparing a new people
- 26:41for himself might show that while he dwelt on earth, that he, when
- 26:45he had raised mankind, will also judge them moreover. Teaching Israel and doing
- 26:49so great miracles and signs, he preached the truth. And let's see,
- 26:56but when he chose his own apostles who were to preach his gospel, who
- 27:00were sinners above all sin, that he might show He came not to call
- 27:06the righteous, but sinners to repentance. He manifested himself to be the son
- 27:10of God. For if he had not come in flesh, how could men
- 27:12have been saved by beholding him? Since looking upon the sun, which is
- 27:15to cease to exist, as as the work of his hands, their eyes
- 27:18might not be able to bear his rays. The Son of God therefore came
- 27:22in flesh from them. And when I smite the shepherd, and the sheep
- 27:26of the flock should be scattered. He himself willed thus to suffer, for
- 27:30it is necessary that he should suffer on the tree. For says he who
- 27:34prophesied regarding him, spare my soul from the sword, fashion my flesh with
- 27:40nails, for the assemblies of the wicked have risen up against me. And
- 27:45again he said, behold, I have given my back to scourges, and
- 27:48my cheeks of strokes. I have set my countenance as a firm rock.
- 27:52When therefore he has fulfilled the commandment. What saith he who is he that
- 27:56will contend with me? Let him oppose me? Or who is he that
- 28:00will enter into judgment with me? Let him draw near to the servant of
- 28:03the Lord, woe unto you, for you show all wax old like a
- 28:07garment, and the mall shall eat you up. And the prophet says,
- 28:10since as a mighty stone he is laid for crushing, behold, I cast
- 28:15down the foundations of Zion. A stone precious, Select a quarter stone honorable.
- 28:19Next, what says he, and he who shall trust in it shall
- 28:22live forever is our hope than upon a stone far from it. But the
- 28:26language is used inasmuch as he laid his flesh as a foundation with power.
- 28:32For he says, as he placed me as a firm rock. And the
- 28:34prophet says again the stone which the builders rejected, the same has become the
- 28:38head of power. And again he says, this is the great and wonderful
- 28:41day which the Lord hath made. I write the more simply unto you,
- 28:47that you may understand. I am the off scouring of your love. What,
- 28:49then, again, says the prophet, the assembly of the wicked surrounding
- 28:53me. They encompassed me as bees do a honeycomb, And upon my garment
- 28:57they cast lot. Since therefore he was about to be manifested and suffering the
- 29:03flesh his suffering was foreshunt. For the Prophet speaks against Israel, woe to
- 29:07their soul, for they have counseled and evil counsel against themselves, saying,
- 29:11let us bind the just one, because he is displeasing to us. And
- 29:15Moses also says to them, behold these things, saith the Lord God.
- 29:19Enter the good land, which the Lord swore to give Abraham and Isaac and
- 29:22Jacob, and inherited a landflow with milk and honey. What then says knowledge?
- 29:29Learn trust, she says, And him who is to be manifested to
- 29:32you in the flesh, that is Jesus, is earth in a suffering state.
- 29:36For the formation of Adam was from the face of the earth. What
- 29:38then meaneth this into the good landlow honey? Blessed be our Lord, who
- 29:44has placed in wisdom and understand of secret things. For the prophet says,
- 29:48who shall understand the parable of the Lord except him whose wife prudent and who
- 29:52loves the Lord. Since therefore, having renewed us by remission of her sins,
- 29:56he has made us after another pattern. It is his purpose that we
- 30:00should possess the souls of children, inasmuch as he has created a new created
- 30:04us, a new by his spirit. Let me catch my breath. He
- 30:08is saying that the prophecies of the Old Testament say that by the time Jesus
- 30:15came, Okay, by the time the Messiah I am, the people of
- 30:18the Old Covenant would be so wicked they could not recognize him and would crucify
- 30:25him and kill him. And then he would rise up a new generation,
- 30:29not bound by the law, but who would be like children, living by
- 30:33faith and not by written words. As I said, it is word.
- 30:40So let's skip. Oh, I don't know, three four very long paragraphs,
- 30:45and he goes into well, in these next paragraphs, he goes into
- 30:48the sacrificial nature of Christ and the groups of fiction, really proving that He
- 30:56took upon himself all the consequences of sin and thus completed the law. The
- 31:06punishment was given, the verdict was finished, and it was done as he
- 31:12said. He represents Jesus essentially his escapegoat, the calf that was to be
- 31:18sacrificed, the ball son of Abraham. We can go on and on,
- 31:26and he does, but then here we get into an interesting point. He
- 31:33starts talking about the history of circumcisim. As we said, circumcision is sort
- 31:37of a symbol of the whole law. It's the outward physical symbol of those
- 31:42who keep the law. And he says the whole, sayeth the Lord.
- 31:48All the nations are uncircumcised in the flesh, but these people are uncircumcised in
- 31:52heart. But that will say yeay, verily the people are circumcised for a
- 31:56seal, But so is also every Syrian and Arab at all the priests of
- 32:00idols. Are these then also the bond of the covenant? Yay? The
- 32:05Egyptians also practiced circumcision. Let then, my children, concerning all things richly,
- 32:10that Abraham, the first, who enjoined circumcision, looking forward in spirit
- 32:16to Jesus, practiced that right having received the mystery of the three letters.
- 32:21Okay, let's just back up here. This is something that isn't mentioned in
- 32:25the Bible, maybe well known in many people who understand the history of ancient
- 32:31Egypt and whatever that you know, the ancient Middle East essentially, But he's
- 32:37saying right here that God commanded Abraham and his descendants to be circumcised as a
- 32:45sign they would follow the law. But the Egyptians were also practicing circumcision.
- 32:51And so were the Syrians and the Arabs and all the priests of idols.
- 32:57So then, obviously salvation could not be found through circumcision. That was a
- 33:02huge point at the time, and unfortunately has come back up. But you
- 33:08know, if we knew what they knew in the ancient world, we would
- 33:10know that the Jews were not the only people who practiced circumcision. Now,
- 33:15wherefore did Moses say, thou shalt night eat swine, nor the eagle,
- 33:19nor the hawk, nor the raven, nor any fish which is not possessed
- 33:22of scales. He embraced three doctrines in his mind. Moreover, the Lord
- 33:28saith to them in Deuteronomy, and I will establish my ordinances among the people.
- 33:32Is there then, not a command of God that they should not eat
- 33:36these things? There is? But Moses spoke with a spiritual reference. For
- 33:39this reason he named the swine as much as to say, thou shalt not
- 33:44join themselves to men who resemble the swine. For when they live in pleasure,
- 33:49they forget the Lord. But when they come to want, they acknowledge
- 33:52the Lord. And in like manner, the swine, when it has eaten,
- 33:54does not recognize its master. But when hungary, it cries out,
- 33:58and I'm receiving its food. Is again now that neither shalt thou eat,
- 34:02he says, the eagle, nor the hawk, nor the kite, nor
- 34:05the raven. Nor shall they join themselves. He means, to such men
- 34:08who know not how to procure food for themselves by labor and sweat, but
- 34:14seize on that of others in their iniquity, and although wearing an aspect of
- 34:17simplicity, are on the watch to plunder others. So these birds, why
- 34:22they sit, ill enquire how they may devour the flesh of others, prove
- 34:24themselves pest to all others by their wickness. And thou shalt not eat,
- 34:30he says, the lamprey, the polypus, the cuttlefish. He means,
- 34:36thou shall not join thyself, or be like such men who as are ungoidly
- 34:40to the end and condemned to death in like manner as those fishes above accursed,
- 34:45float deep, not swimming on the surface like the rest, but make
- 34:50their abode in the mud which lies at the bottom. Moreover, he says,
- 34:52thou shalt not eat the hare. Wherefore thou shalt not be a corruptor
- 34:58of boys, nor unto such, because the hair multiplies year by year,
- 35:02are the places of its conception for as many years as it lives, it
- 35:08has for as many years as it lives, so many it has. Moreover,
- 35:14thou shalt not eat the hyaena, But he means thou shalt not be
- 35:16an adulterer, nor a corruptor, nor be like them that are such.
- 35:22Wherefore, because that animal annually changes its sex that was a myth of the
- 35:27time, that obviously doesn't happen, and is at one time male and another
- 35:30female. Moreover, he rightly detests the weasel, for he means, thou
- 35:36shalt not be like those to whom we hear of as committing wickedness with the
- 35:39mouth on account of their uncleanliness, Nor shall thou'll be joined to those impure
- 35:45women who commit iniquity with the mouth, For this animal conceives by the mouth.
- 35:50That was another popular myth of the day. Moses then issues three doctrines
- 35:54concerning meats with a spiritual significance, but they receive them according to their fleshly
- 36:00desire, as if he had literally spoken of literal meats. This is a
- 36:04little bit of mind blowing. If we think about the entire Kosher Jewish dietary
- 36:13tradition. He's saying that Moses was speaking in parables, you know, as
- 36:19Jesus often did, and that the people took it literally. Is he right,
- 36:25is he wrong? I don't know, but he's saying that literally,
- 36:30they were not to associate with human beings who acted in animalistic ways, not
- 36:40homosexuals, not fornicators, not liars, not those who wallowed in the mud,
- 36:47and it can come up, you know, etc. Etc. Those
- 36:51who wouldn't work, those who preyed on others, thieves, communists, you
- 36:57name it. This is one utter an ad. I mean, this is
- 37:02not the modern era. We cannot expect him to have full understanding of the
- 37:09zoology the biology of all animals. He was working in a symbolic way.
- 37:16And if he's right that Moses taught the people in parable as much as did
- 37:22Jesus when speaking to the Jews, we really ought to look more at the
- 37:28meaning of the law and not the letter of the law, which is exactly
- 37:31what Jesus said. He wouldn't change one eye out of the law, but
- 37:36when asked what is necessary, follow the ten commandments, Love God with all
- 37:40your heart, and love your neighbor. As yourself, he said. David,
- 37:46however, comprehends the knowledge of the three doctrines, speaks in like manner.
- 37:51Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the council of the ungodly,
- 37:54even as the fish is referred to go in the depths of the sea,
- 37:59and have not stood in the way of sinners, even as those who
- 38:01profess to fear of the Lord but go away like swine, and hath not
- 38:06sat in the seat of scorners, even as the birds that lie in wait
- 38:08for prey take full and firm glass of the spiritual knowledge. But Moses says
- 38:14still further, you shall eat of every animal that is cloven footed and ruminant.
- 38:19What does he mean The rumined animal denotes him who, on receiving food,
- 38:24recognizes him who nourishes him, and being satisfied by him, is visibly
- 38:30made glad well spake Moses, having received respect to the commandment. What if
- 38:37Moses didn't actually mean don't eat pork, He meant don't associate with men who
- 38:42act like pigs. What if he meant you shall eat of the rumined animals,
- 38:50meaning act like the sheep. Sheep's ruminant animal in our time. We
- 38:57keep cattle, you know, we keep horses. You know, these are
- 39:00very horses, are brilliant and loyal, and they can be as close to
- 39:08the person who cares for them as your pet dog. Cowls are a little
- 39:14different, but every now and then you find one with a very sweet nature.
- 39:17Goats are very much like dogs. They're like dogs with hoofs. But
- 39:22specifically in his time you would be talking the sheep. And Jesus, of
- 39:27course, was the lamb the most docile of all creatures. What if the
- 39:35Law of Moses as it is written in the Bible in the Old Testament,
- 39:40is actually allegorical, That's what Saint Barnabas thought, or at least his student,
- 39:47who was actually taught by Saint Paul, the leading authority on the Law
- 39:52of Moses in the early Church. That's really something to think about, isn't
- 39:58it. What, then, does he mean that we ought to join ourselves
- 40:02to those who fear the Lord, those who meditate in the heart on the
- 40:06commandments which they have received, Those who both utter the judgments of the Lord
- 40:10and observe them, Those that know that mediation is the work of gladness,
- 40:15and who ruminate, ruminate upon the word of the Lord. But what means
- 40:20the cloven footed that the righteous man also walks in this world, yet looks
- 40:24forward to a holy state to come to hold? How well Moses legislated,
- 40:30How is it possible for them to understand or comprehend these things? We,
- 40:35then, rightly, understanding his commandments, explain them as the Lord intended.
- 40:38For this purpose. He circumcised our ears and our hearts that we might understand
- 40:44these things. If, as the Torah observant Christians claim, the Christian must
- 40:51still follow Torah law, how can he explain that the first Christians had a
- 40:55completely different understanding of the toil law than did the religious Jews, with whom
- 41:04they were absolutely opposed in it war. So he then talks about the foreshadowing
- 41:12of baptism and the crucifixion in the Old Testament. Very important passage, very
- 41:21meaningful, and very well said. But we can go on with our topic
- 41:30here, and I would encourage you to look up the early Church fathers.
- 41:35You can find this book online. It's the Epistle of Barbas and read that
- 41:38because it is quite good. He said, But let us see if this
- 41:42people is the heir or the former and the Covenant belongs to us or to
- 41:45them. Hearing now what the scriptures saith concerning the people, Isaac prayed for
- 41:50Rebecca, his wife, because she was barren, and she conceived. Furthermore,
- 41:53also Rebecca went forth to inquire of the Lord, and the Lord said
- 41:57to her, two nations are in that war, him and two peoples in
- 42:00thy belly. And one people shall surpass the other, and the elders shall
- 42:04serve the younger. You ought to understand who Isaac was, who were beckoning
- 42:07concerning what persons. He declared that this people should be greater than that.
- 42:13And in another prophecy, Jacob speaks more clearly to his son Joseph, saying,
- 42:16behold, the Lord has not deprived me of thy presence. Behold thy
- 42:21sons to me, Thy may bless him. And he brought Manassa and Ephraim,
- 42:25desiring that Manassa should be blessed because he was the elder with his view.
- 42:29Joseph led him to the right hand and his father Jacob. But Jacob
- 42:31saw in the spirit the type of the people to arise afterwards and what says
- 42:36the scripture, and Jacob changed the direction of his hand and laid his right
- 42:39hand upon the head of Ephraim the second and the younger and blessed him.
- 42:44Very common thing in the early Church that the older brother did not receive the
- 42:50blessing the younger brother. If God had two people's, essentially two covenants,
- 42:55what was rightfully due the first was taken. We can see this in several
- 43:02stories in the Bible. I mean we can see it well over and over.
- 43:07I won't even get into Esau and all that. But what was rightfully
- 43:10due the older brother was taken and given to the younger brother, which is
- 43:15actually in violation of Jewish law. The very foreshadowing that what was given to
- 43:23the Jewish people would be taken from them and given to Christians is actually in
- 43:30violation of the Torah. He said. An explanation, He says, yes,
- 43:37it is even so. But let us inquire if the Lord has really
- 43:39given that testament which he swore to the followers that he would give the people.
- 43:44He did give it, but they were not worthy to receive it on
- 43:45account of their sins. For the prophet declares, and Moses was passing fury
- 43:50days before. Okay. He goes on about the idle worship there at Mount
- 43:53Sinai again and apparently after God had done everything to show the Holy people he
- 44:00would leave them out of Egypt, through the awful experience of the desert and
- 44:07all that, and when they even got to the promised land and did not
- 44:12accept it, when they didn't accept manna in the desert, when they complained
- 44:15that there was no water, and Moses strut the rock. This is repeated
- 44:19over and over in the Old New Testament. God said, I chose us,
- 44:23my people. I'm going to give you this really hard law that you
- 44:28have to follow now because you've filled in every way. But what was going
- 44:32to be yours is the older brother. It will eventually be taken to you
- 44:36because you've rejected it, you killed the prophets. But we come after Moses,
- 44:39and it will be given to the gentiles, the gentiles, who,
- 44:45as we discussed yesterday, were never under the law, and as has said
- 44:52repeatedly in the New Testament, should never be under the law, because if
- 44:58the law was sufficient, there would be no need for the sacrifice of Jesus.
- 45:01And see further, Also, this is I'm skipping ahead more paragraphs.
- 45:07It's a long book. Further Also, it is written concerning the Sabbath in
- 45:10the decalogue which the Lord spoke face to face with Moses, to MOSI,
- 45:14melt Sinai and sanctify you the Sabbath day of the Lord, with clean hands
- 45:17and a pure heart. And he says in another place, if my sons
- 45:21skip the Sabbath, then I would cause mercy to rest upon them. The
- 45:24Sabbath is mentioned at the beginning of creation. Thus and God made six days.
- 45:29God made in six days works of his hand, and may an end
- 45:31on the seventh day, and restaurant and sanctified it. Attend my child.
- 45:36To the meaning of this expression, he finished in six days. This implieth
- 45:40that the Lord will finish all things in six thousand years. For a day
- 45:44with him is as a thousand years. And he himself testifies, saying,
- 45:49behold today will be as a thousand years. There from my children in six
- 45:52days, that it's in six thousand years all things will be finished. And
- 45:57he rested on the seventh day. This means it's when his son coming again,
- 46:00shall destroy the time of the wicked man and judge the ungodly, and
- 46:05change the sun in the moon of the stars, then he shall truly rest
- 46:07on the seventh day. Moreover, he says thou shall sanctify it with a
- 46:12pure heart, hands and a pure heart. If therefore anyone can now sanctify
- 46:16the day which God has sanctified it. If therefore anyone can now sanctify the
- 46:22God which the day which God has sanctified, except he is pure in heart.
- 46:27Of all things we are deceived. Behold. Therefore, certainly them one
- 46:30properly resting sanctifies it. When we ourselves, having perceived the promise, wickedness
- 46:36no longer existing, and all things having been made new by the Lord,
- 46:39shall be able to work in righteousness, then we shall be able to sanctify
- 46:45it first, having been first sanctified ourselves. Further, he says to them,
- 46:50your new moons and sabbaths, I cannot endure ye perceive how he speaks.
- 46:53Your present sabbaths are not acceptable with me. But that is which I
- 46:59have made name this, when giving rest to all things, I shall make
- 47:02a beginning of the eighth day, that is the beginning of another world.
- 47:07Wherefore also we keep the eighth Day with joyfulness, the day also on which
- 47:13Jesus rose again from the dead, When he had manifested himself, he ascended
- 47:16into the heavens. So here he is just say the DDK before Barnabas,
- 47:24saying that the Sabbath is now Sunday, the Christian Sabbath is Sunday. That
- 47:30God never even respected the sabbath is being Saturday, because they were not sanctified
- 47:37in their hearts and in their hands. Only Jesus could make amends for the
- 47:45sins that had been done. And after he was crucified, died, the
- 47:52law died with him. He rose again on the eighth day, which is
- 47:57the Sunday, and we keep the eighth day with joyfulness, the day also
- 48:02on which Jesus rose again from the dead, and when he had manifested himself,
- 48:07he assented to the heavens. He then goes on to talk about the
- 48:13Temple of the Jews. At the time. You know, this was about
- 48:20the time the temple was being destroyed by the Romans. So he went on
- 48:27in great detail explaining why it had become essentially a dent of iniquity, that
- 48:35God, no lawyer, had pleasure in it, and it had to be
- 48:37destroyed. After the religious Jews had rejected the Lord and crucified him, the
- 48:45temple was to be no more, and the Temple Law was to be no
- 48:51more, and the new temple is Jesus. He said he would tear down
- 48:57the temple and raise it up on the third Day. And as members of
- 49:01the Body of Christ, we share as being the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- 49:07I guess that kind of wraps it up here. Which you've completely said
- 49:15that the only thing that was living still in the Temple of the Jews after
- 49:21the resurrection of Christ was Satan and death, and it had to be destroyed.
- 49:27You can't say much more now, I cut out at some of the
- 49:30harsher language. Barnabas was often also a bit given to boasting, which is
- 49:37one of the things that make people wonder if he actually was Saint Barnabas or
- 49:42a student of Saint Barnabas, because a younger man is more given to boasting.
- 49:46The older we get, the more we learn. Humility God willing.
- 49:51I hope we all do. I hope I do. I pray for humility
- 49:53daily. And as they say, be careful if you pray for humility,
- 49:57because God will make it happen. But that's not actually a bad thing anyway,
- 50:04y'all. We will pick up with Saint Justin Martyr on Monday. I
- 50:08got I may be able to do a show tomorrow, I doubt it.
- 50:12I got a lot of a lot of things on the agenda, a lot
- 50:15of things have been putting off, and uh, but you know, I
- 50:17try to do at least for a week anyway. And the words of Saint
- 50:22Padre Pio, pray, hope and don't worry, and I would talk to
- 50:24you next time.
