- 0:10Speaker 2: This is doctor Justin Coilson, the founder of Happy Families
- 0:13Speaker 2: dot com dot Au and the Six Kids. Normally, I'm
- 0:17Speaker 2: here with Kylie, my wife, missus Happy Families as my
- 0:20Speaker 2: parenting podcast co hosts. But it's school holidays in Queens
- 0:25Speaker 2: and I hope that you're having a great school holiday
- 0:26Speaker 2: break with your kids. Kylie and I will be back
- 0:30Speaker 2: from our holidays with a whole lot of new episodes
- 0:33Speaker 2: of the Happy Families podcast starting again on July the eleventh,
- 0:38Speaker 2: but for now, some highlights from recent Happy Families podcasts.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Every now and again, I get to talk to an
- 0:44Speaker 2: absolute just somebody who blows me away. A couple of
- 0:47Speaker 2: years ago, I read a book called The End of Average,
- 0:49Speaker 2: and then the following year I read Dark Horse. They
- 0:52Speaker 2: were literally two of my favorite books each year. I
- 0:54Speaker 2: just at the top of my list of favorite books
- 0:57Speaker 2: that I read that year the End of Average and
- 0:59Speaker 2: Dark Course, written by Todd Rose. He had a chat
- 1:02Speaker 2: with Kylie and I in episode number one hundred and
- 1:05Speaker 2: ninety one of the Happy Families podcast, and we touched
- 1:08Speaker 2: on how to work with your child who is making
- 1:10Speaker 2: a life choice that you don't agree with. So how
- 1:13Speaker 2: do you deal with your child wanting to make a
- 1:14Speaker 2: life choice that doesn't seem like the right idea at
- 1:17Speaker 2: the time.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Some things are just bad choices, right. Well, let's be clear, right,
- 1:21Speaker 1: not every path is a fulfilling path. But one of
- 1:24Speaker 1: the things that especially with older kids, and I think
- 1:27Speaker 1: for younger kids, I have different advice about some of
- 1:29Speaker 1: the things that I think parents should focus on. But
- 1:32Speaker 1: for older kids, like in a Saturday system, whatever it is,
- 1:37Speaker 1: at least we know the mile markers, right, We kind
- 1:39Speaker 1: of know how to tell whether we're making progress. When
- 1:41Speaker 1: you choose to pursue a path of fulfillment, it's a
- 1:46Speaker 1: unique path, so it's not as easy to know am
- 1:48Speaker 1: I am I on path? Or am I just like
- 1:50Speaker 1: literally a dead end? So this is the thing that
- 1:53Speaker 1: I think, like one of the things that I would
- 1:56Speaker 1: always ask is is your child taking a responsibility for
- 2:01Speaker 1: the choices? Right? So, like if you have a kid
- 2:05Speaker 1: who wants to be an actress and they're like, I'm
- 2:07Speaker 1: going to Hollywood, right, and it's like they're living with
- 2:10Speaker 1: six roommates, they're waiting tables to pay the bills and
- 2:13Speaker 1: they're doing it. That's not bad. That is a really
- 2:15Speaker 1: good sign. It may not turn out that she's going
- 2:17Speaker 1: to be a celebrity actress, but it is a good path. Right.
- 2:21Speaker 1: But if she's like, hey, listen, I expect you to
- 2:23Speaker 1: pay for my rent and oh I need a car
- 2:25Speaker 1: and you're not taking like, without fail, not a single
- 2:29Speaker 1: successful dark Horse that we studied ever shirk responsibility, right,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Because if it is a path of meeting and fulfillment,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you will take responsibility. You will do what it takes. Right.
- 2:41Speaker 1: So if you see your kid being willing to lean
- 2:44Speaker 1: into it and on the responsibility, man lean into it
- 2:46Speaker 1: with them because it may not be their their their
- 2:49Speaker 1: long term life outcome, but it will be a great
- 2:52Speaker 1: learning experience and you never know what comes next.
- 2:55Speaker 2: That's Todd Rose from episode number one hundred and ninety one,
- 2:58Speaker 2: Professor Todd Rose from Harvard. He wrote the end of
- 3:01Speaker 2: average and dark Horse. Have you enjoyed that chat? If
- 3:05Speaker 2: you'd like to hear more of that conversation, Episode number

- 3:09Speaker 2: the entire interview. Your daughter just walked by, eyes glued
- 3:16Speaker 2: to her phone expression unreadable. You ask her to put
- 3:19Speaker 2: it down, but she balalks. You know it's not good
- 3:22Speaker 2: for her, but you're not sure why or how to
- 3:24Speaker 2: support better choices. In the webinar, pixel perfect I joined
