I'm supposed to do it? I'll give you the five minutes then. All right. You know. Did we have this when we did this before? I don't think he's ever done this before.
• 0:20
Good. Welcome everybody to podcast number 22, post Single Speed USA, Decorah, Iowa. Coming to you live from the Haymarket. [drum roll] Haymarket, where everybody knows your name- [laughs]...
• 0:33
because they've all been in jail together. [laughs] [laughs] That's pretty close, actually. [laughs] Yeah. Welcome to podcast number 22. Uh, tonight- Otherwise known as the dos dos. Dos dos.
• 0:47
Uh, as you can tell- [laughs]... that's, that's the world famous Sav, the voice, the voice of reason. [laughs] The return of Sav. We should call this Return of Sav. Return of Sav, yeah. The- The post-COVID reemergence...
• 0:56
so, he has to come on every 22 of the interviews, 'cause he did the first one, and now he's on this one. So at number 44, I'll be back. 44, you're back, okay. All right. Spinner's here tonight. Uh,
• 1:06
we've got Shannon and Brecka, uh, that jumped in and helped us and did all the- Jumped in and helped you? They did everything and saved everybody's asses. Yeah. [laughs] I was g- Thanks, Sav...
• 1:15
[laughs] They were, they were the only one of our friends that I could trust with money. So- [laughs]... that's why you guys had to do registration and sell shirts. [laughs] You did get it all back, right?
• 1:23
[laughs] I got a lot of it back. Wait, there was money? If you embezzled any- What?... that's fine because I got enough. [laughs] Not according to some people. That's all that's important. All right. Oh.
• 1:32
Oh, we're not bringing that up. [laughs] What, the embezzlement or the loss of money? No, just the other place. Oh, the other place? Yeah, there might be embezzlement in other places. We're not talking about that.
• 1:40
We are not talking about that place tonight. All right. Oh, yeah, we can. After we get drunk we can do it. Yeah. All right, so race is- After? Race is the- It's a week So we, we are, we're what? We're a week after.
• 1:48
Uh- Two weeks... almost two- Week and a half... week and a half. I don't know. Whatever. I don't know. It was- I still, I still smell funny... it, it's a, it's been a fog.
• 1:55
But the last people left, no because the last people left- Some people are still in jail. Tuesday. No, Tuesday. Tuesday. A lot of people left on Tuesday. We're still here. I don't know what you're talking about.
• 2:04
[laughs] We were all there. Yeah. The- And we're still here... the visit- some visitors, some people left Some people, some people had to wait for the arraignment.
• 2:10
[laughs] Oh, there was, there was one, but he got out on Sunday. [laughs] There was one that ended up in jail. Well- Yeah. 5:00 PM, yeah. Check out Mobile Patrol. [laughs] Don't do that.
• 2:20
[laughs] Names have been changed to protect the guilty. Just let, leave him alone. [laughs] No, no doxing. [laughs] Yeah. It could happen to any of us. Oh. You know who's sitting across the way staring at me right now?
• 2:32
A fucking e-bike guy. Oh. Oh. Are you talking about me? Ooh. No. [laughs] No. Oh, yeah. Got two of them. [laughs] I, I proudly rode down here on an e-bike. I probably walked down here- I-...
• 2:43
because I was afraid to ride the bike and carry this shit. I, I proudly rode and did my part of Single Speed USA on an e-bike, so double middle fingers. And you gave that shout-out up on top at GT Park too- Yeah...
• 2:53
so kudos. I mean, I was working though. It was super hard. Yeah. We had, we had the tough- Speaking of working and super hard, who made the map? [laughs] Oh, yeah. That was me. That was you? Can you explain the map?
• 3:03
So- Can you explain the map? No, 'cause we are posting the map. I, I refuse to let Greg have it- I'll, I'll give-... unless the map is getting posted... I'll give a little bit of background.
• 3:10
So we end up, and, you know, it's about 30 seconds until the race starts, and somebody says, "You know, it's not really marked very well up here." And we were, we were maybe two miles in to, of the course.
• 3:22
And- Well, it lo- it wasn't marked at all. [laughs] And I told you guys to mark it. So of course it's not marked very poorly. [laughs] He goes, he goes, "We're off to my house.
• 3:30
We got the marking tape, the paint, and a rake." I'm like, "Okay." No, and a stake and a hammer. We had those, we had that too. So we had, we had all that. We had all that. Yeah.
• 3:37
But we, you know, we also had a couple of coolers, three, four, eight coolers of beer. And so we were talking, and then we're like, "We should probably do this."
• 3:43
And so then we pulled out what will heretofore be known as the map. [laughs] And the map- I feel like that was drawn beautifully...
• 3:52
the map, I don't know where you were standing or what you were referencing, but we've, I mean, it took six of us to figure it out. And like, and even then we were like, "Is this it?" And we're like, "We don't know.
• 4:02
Oh, here they are." [laughs] And, and don't, and don't forget- Oh, no... one of the guys is a professional map maker. Oh, shit. Yeah. Who? We did turn that thing every direction. Yeah. It's still correct.
• 4:11
Vers, Vers is a professional map maker- GT Park... and he couldn't figure it out. Yeah. You had Prairie Loop. I had Little Big Horn going around you both, both every way. Yeah. I mean, we got it.
• 4:18
And then cut to the pines. I just think there was a perspective issue. I think it was a two-year-old map. [laughs] So if you would've got a child- But in, in, in-... I think he could've figured it out...
• 4:25
I was dealing with a bunch of drunks. [laughs] In your, in, in your, in your defense, it's the same map you drew the night before after about 30 beers. Yeah, it didn't change. I guess- The, the map was the same...
• 4:34
I guess maybe the theme is this, and maybe this will be the theme that goes throughout the whole night. Spinner's a two-year-old? [laughs] Putting on an event for two-year-olds is pretty fucking hard.
• 4:46
Hey, let me ask you this. Who the fuck got lost? Nobody on that side. That's the weird part, is like they came through the first time, and then, and then we saw them again where we were supposed to see them. Yeah.
• 4:56
And then we saw them again where we were supposed to see them, so it worked. Bingo. Well, and then, and then when they got to me, it was like, "Come this way." So I guess good job. End of story. Good job, Spinner. Yeah.
• 5:02
Nice job, Spinner. Thanks. I'm surprised you guys- Back pat's all around... read that. Yeah. But we got it. Anyway, uh, so there was a thing. There was a big event. And, uh- Yeah...
• 5:10
and I, I, I'm here to say that I did nothing, zero, [background person whoops] uh, for prep work on it. I was not involved in any meetings.
• 5:19
And I'm, so because I am in that position, I can say y'all did a pretty fucking good job. Nice job, everybody. Well, you came to the first meeting, which turned into a party.
• 5:27
It just ran into the- That was the first meeting the night before? Yes. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] That was, that was the, the launch. Was there a text before that at least?
• 5:35
Just the one that you got saying, "Come to the meeting." [laughs] Like, all right, then I guess I was involved in the whole thing- You were involved in the whole thing, yeah... from start to finish.
• 5:42
Like, like I told the guys in the Milwaukee podcast, I said our coup for the whole weekend was we got to so- get sobbed, go to the bars two nights in a row. That hasn't happened since you fucking moved down here.
• 5:51
Hey, that's a three, three nights in a row at least. No, it's not true. I, I took COVID off of being a drunk. Oh. COVID's done. COVID's- That's what I heard... not a party friend. [laughs] After that it was done, yeah.
• 6:01
But monkeypox is here now, so you can probably use that one. Oh, yeah. Well. I'm just saying COVID's better than monkeypox. I, I think they're okay. I don't think our trees are tall enough
• 6:09
Yeah, I did, I did a lot of the legwork was done first, and I had talked to Ogar about the course and then all the ordering shit and approving shit with the city, which I did get approval. Yeah.
• 6:17
This is funny, I need to tell this story. [laughs] This is the best story of all weekend. So after we get done, you know, it- [laughs]...
• 6:21
everybody's out of jail, everybody's left, and I'm over in Wisconsin fixing tractors and shit, and I get a call from a Decorah number. And I'm like, "Okay, I better answer this," 8:00, 8:15 in the morning.
• 6:32
And I answer, I'm like- Oh, uh, when is it, Monday? [laughs] M- uh, Monday after the event Monday after the event. So I'm like, okay, answering it like, "Hello, is this, um, Spinner Ryerson?" [laughs] I'm like, "Yeah."
• 6:43
I'm like, um, "Are you, um, the event director for Single Speed USA?" I'm like, "Oh, fuck." [laughs] Like, what happened, they're calling me immediately after, like, first thing Monday morning, I get this phone call.
• 6:54
I'm like, "Yes, it was." They're like, "Um, has anybody contacted you from the city yet?" I'm like, "No." [laughs] Like, I, I was- [laughs]... slightly worried about law enforcement.
• 7:04
This is when I start to- I was more worried about-... roll down-... Piper and Rick... between his butt cheeks right now.
• 7:07
I was just like- [laughs] It'd be, it'd be nice if the cop cars were parked in front of your house- My head's going-... instead of my house all the time... a s- a million miles an hour.
• 7:12
Like, what could I have actually caught? What could I be caught for here? And then they go, "Well, we just wanted to let you know that your event, uh, your application has been approved."
• 7:21
[laughs] [laughs] So I'm like, "Oh, wonderful. Thank you." Thank God. Yeah. And then they're like, "Uh, so when are you having your event?" [laughs] I'm like, "Uh, we actually had it last Saturday."
• 7:30
And she's like, "Oh, nothing to worry about then." The, uh- Thank you. My, my, my biggest nightmare of this thing was, it would, would, would have been that it had not been sanctioned. [laughs] Yeah.
• 7:39
[laughs] By some sort of governing body. We're gonna pull your permit. Well- City council... Single Speed USA group ride. Sorry, no race. [laughs] Well, that's, that's what- Everybody, there's Dave Kester waving. Hey.
• 7:49
Hey. Hey. Hi, Dave. Everybody drink. Oh, Dave even does- And it's a parade... Dave, Dave even does parade wife. Yeah. Parade wife. He had a great time. You fancy. Yeah, he had fun.
• 7:55
I think he had gears on his bike, but he had a great time. I had gears and an electric motor, let me be clear on that. Yeah. Well, you had an 80 pound bike. So true. Um- Um, we had what? 175 racers, riders- Riders...
• 8:07
people on the course? Uh, 175- He had six racers [laughs]... uh, yeah, we had six racers. 175 registered participants with numbers that- Yeah... we put numbers out there. So that's not bad.
• 8:18
That's average or better f- than average lately for a Single Speed event.
• 8:21
I think I, I think one of the cool things was that there were a lot of people who had never been to Decorah, never ridden the trails, never been out here. And people were like...
• 8:29
And it was, I mean, let's, it, it rained a lot, and it was soupy and stuff, and then it got fucking glorious. Oh, yeah. And everybody was like, "These trails. These trails." Yeah.
• 8:39
Oh, my point, my point is, is that we've been keep canceling the time trials down here because, oh, it rained Wednesday. We can't run a race anymore.
• 8:46
[laughs] We just proved that, yeah, we built these trails so you can run a race on them no matter what. Yeah.
• 8:51
And well, I looked at the forecast too, and the bubble that I saw in the map, like, we could have started at 10 o'clock if we did like we planned to. And then, that's getting loud, isn't it? And then, uh- [laughs]...
• 9:01
it w- the rain was gonna move in- Probably not a good idea... like 2:00, 2:30. But at two o'clock it was just gorgeous. Skies are blue. Oh, yeah. Rain was gone. The rocks were drying out. Trees were... I d- I don't know.
• 9:12
It turned into one hell of a party. It was fantastic. Yeah. I think they can hear us. What's, what's that song? I don't know. I can't even tell. Let's just listen to that for a second. Hold on. Everybody quiet.
• 9:22
Name that tune in three notes. Shazam it. Can you beat Shazam? Brooke, you haven't said a thing yet. What do you want me to say? Oh, this is, uh, Three Dog Night. I didn't even know you guys. Oh.
• 9:32
I was just walking through Decorah one day- Okay... [laughs] and got sucked in. Let, let it be known that the guy with the facial hair like that- [laughs]... just identified Three Dog Night. [laughs] No, no.
• 9:40
I got a better one. We were sitting at the club the other night, and a, and a guy introduced me to his new girlfriend. And- And her name was Three Dog Night. No, no. Oh, I hope so. It could've been. Wow.
• 9:48
Um, uh, in fact, but she goes, "The, the thing up there is kinda like down here." It's like, all right, who played that song type of thing. Oh, yeah.
• 9:54
And, and I'm sitting there at the bar with him, and all of a sudden I go, "Who the fuck played Bowling With Soup?" [laughs] And everybody looks at me like- Why do you know that song?
• 10:01
"Hey, who's, hey, who's Bowling With Soup, and who's Bowling With Soup, and how do you know that?" Like, uh, sorry. But, but I did, so I won that one. Excellent.
• 10:09
One of the highlights of this race was when I was down at the bottom and- Right... people were starting to come through. Right.
• 10:15
And, um, you know, everybody's running by and having their beer stop, and I look up the hill and I see this orange jumpsuit coming down the fucking hill. [laughs] And it's Geno. I didn't even see him show up.
• 10:26
Goddamn Gene Overbriller. He just jumped in the fucking middle. And somebody... No, in, in poor, in usual form, got there an hour late and still caught up to everybody. [laughs] His story was that, uh, midnight
• 10:37
the day before, who was it that, uh- Uh, Randall... yeah, Randall. Yeah. S- Randall said, "Hey, tomorrow we're going down to Decorah and ride Single Speed USA." And in classic Geno form, he said, "I'm there." Yeah.
• 10:49
[laughs] And there he was. And then left, and then he stayed at my house, and then he had to turn around and leave to go to Luverne, Minnesota the next day.
• 10:55
But he did, he had a, uh, we sat in, at Tea Box and had a, a pork tenderloin. Oh, shit. So he got the Iowa experience. Oh. He's like- I didn't know that part.
• 11:03
I, I ordered a, I ordered a t- a tenderloin sandwich with, with pickles and mustard, which is how you do it- Yeah... in Iowa. Wow... and, uh- He just- And he was like, "I'm just...
• 11:11
I'll take what that guy got, 'cause he's local." [laughs] And he showed up, towards the end, he just like, got, came up to me and handed me a muddy $20 bill, and was like, "I just showed up now."
• 11:20
[laughs] [laughs] He didn't even wait until the party or nothing. The nice thing about that, 'cause I made the 666 number for Dave Lunz, and he didn't show up. Oh. And Geno goes, "By the way, my number is this."
• 11:31
And I'm like, "Just happen to have- Your number... his number... your number right here." Your number. Pulled it out of my pocket. Just because honest to God, Lunz is the last one to get 666.
• 11:39
I've had it longer than he has. I don't, I don't... Okay, you guys can fight over it. [laughs] I can make you another one. No, of course. It's gonna be a slap fight. It's gonna cost you $14.
• 11:47
What did you, when you told me what number, I said, "I don't care, just give me a plate without a number. I'm fine with that." Yeah. There's gonna be a slap.
• 11:52
As long as there's, as long as there's bacon and- Mashed potatoes and gravy on the plate, I'm good.
• 11:57
And, and, uh, and it was so, I, I just m- uh, manned, I personed a, a, a stop up at the top with a shit load of Busch Light, which was super cool 'cause, you know, sometimes you gotta inter- [laughs] introduce out-of-staters to Busch Light.
• 12:10
Yeah. [laughs] Well, and it's- It technically-... it's the perfect sports beer... it technically is a water stop. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] But it, it's, it was- We appreciate that... we did not have any water down below.
• 12:18
Yeah. We could've used some Busch Light. And don't forget, so we decided on the podcast just prior to the race that there was a vote taken- I can't... that Busch Light is now the official beer of Iowa.
• 12:27
Well, I mean it's- Because you have Pabst in Iowa... I don't think you need to ask. [laughs] Yeah. I think that's- I feel like it was, like, the unofficial beer of Iowa for a while.
• 12:33
If you gave somebody from Iowa- We earned that, like-... a beer other than Busch Light, you're gonna get a funny look... we earned that, like good and hard.
• 12:37
Yeah, everybody, you- [laughs] After years and years of drinking... say, say that, say those two words together to anybody else in the country and they're like, "What? That- Mm-hmm... what is that?" What? Mm-hmm.
• 12:43
Busch Light or Good & Heart? [laughs] Busch Light. Oh. Boom. I'm hoping more states know what that is. [laughs] Anyway. So anyways, anyhows, there we are up on the top of the thing there with a bunch of Busch Light.
• 12:57
I saw some snaps. Like, you must have had 50 to 70 people- Oh, every, the, the best part was the first six guys, the fast ones, went through and, and I think we parked the truck right in their way.
• 13:08
That was the funny part. And then, uh, so they got around, and then everybody else stopped for at least a half an hour. Yeah? That's a- So it's all of a sudden there's 150 people up there. Yeah.
• 13:19
Milling around, "Hey, you know, I saw you at Winona. Oh, you know the..." You know, and it was fantastic. And then they went to that spot because this is the genius of the, of the- You stopped there three times.
• 13:29
[laughs] Yeah, he stopped there three times, or went through three times. So what was it? Six times if you did the whole course- Which nobody did... you'd go through that spot. Nobody.
• 13:36
Most, most people came down from your half and quit. [laughs] And I, I set this kind of course up specifically knowing these riders. I gave you four ch- options to quit. [laughs] Here's, here's the thing.
• 13:45
If you're g- you're gonna put Sovereign in the middle of a, of a situation like that, I will, I will get people to quit.
• 13:50
[laughs] A lot of them, a lot of them went right up there, and then they would take off and then go through, and then they would, when they would come back in they would just cut through and then go right back and do the same loop again.
• 13:57
They, I, I know there's at least 10 guys that did the same loop four or five times. I think Gomez did that, 'cause he did his story and he said he got lost.
• 14:04
I'm like, "The only way, if you did that lap again, if you never left the right way, well." Yeah. Which you guys maybe have marked? It's gonna check out. Did you guys, like, t- mark the course?
• 14:12
Did you just show people the map and tell them to figure it out? [laughs] No, it was marked. No, it was, it was actually pretty well done. By the time the third or fourth rider came through it was done. Uh-huh. Yeah.
• 14:21
[laughs] I was literally- No, it was good. It was, we were ready... I was literally, it was like, it was like me raking a path as they're riding by me. Ah, okay.
• 14:29
And then, uh, as the day went on, uh, then more, more things got parked in the way of the, of the fast people. Well, of course. DJ took over. Oh. Oh, yeah. That's dangerous. Yeah. That's all I'm gonna say.
• 14:40
DJ, and DJ, so first he parked my truck in front, and then that wasn't any good so he- Oh, God, you let him drive it? [laughs] So, so then he started grabbing bicycles and putting bicycles in front of it.
• 14:50
Are you blowing up here or what's going on? I don't know. I don't know how my phone works. It's, it's Thursday night, Kelly's calling. Um,
• 14:55
uh, and then, so then, so then he got mad because he did that, so then he took and pulled tape across it, and then he started laying bike... Everybody, whoever rode in, he would just lay their bikes in the path.
• 15:03
So eventually they had to ride around my truck through the trees- Okay... uh, and through the, and through the old, that old busted-up pine tree. Yeah. And they had to ride through there, and they're all fucking pissed.
• 15:12
And then, and then pretty much somebody- I think they were in pretty good... Everybody was pretty good spirits about it I think. Nobody bitched at me about the course, actually. No. Which was kinda neat.
• 15:19
Well, that's because when they got to the bottom they started drinking Toppling Goliath. How could anybody bitch after that? They're on hammers. They couldn't fucking ride back uphill.
• 15:25
And- Yeah, but everybody in the top, though, was, like, super pleased about the course and thought it was awesome. Yes, true. So. That music turned up. Kudos to Decorah. That's cool.
• 15:34
But, um- Uh, I did, I did come- Thanks for putting more music on after I told you not to... after we cleaned up the top after it was all over and we all kinda rolled down the hill, it was super fun. It was super great.
• 15:45
And somebody with a tutu followed me. I can't remember who that was, but- Oh, that was Kayla. Oh, Kayla. She was cool. Kayla. She was super cool. I had her in my own.
• 15:51
And she had, she was playing, like, super kick-ass music, and then I would hear the music just sort of fade away. [laughs] And then, and then it would come back, and then she would catch back up.
• 16:00
And I was, and I was like, "I'm going downhill. I don't wanna go too fast."
• 16:03
Anyway, we got down to the start-finish, which was a whole other party that we had not experienced yet, which was great, and then everybody's drinking the, the Toppling Goliath, which was very tasty- GG...
• 16:13
but also very heavy. Yeah. [laughs] I think they promised, like, 300 beers, and then, like, the day before they said there's gonna be 200. I swear to God there was 400 beers there. There was- Yeah...
• 16:22
there was almost 500. Oh. Because, because we did 350 cases of Busch Light. No, you did not 350 cases. 350 cans. [laughs] This portion of the podcast is brought to you by Toppling Goliath Beer up on the hill in Decorah.
• 16:36
[laughs] Come down, watch some racing, and drink some Toppling Goliath beer. [laughs] Anyway, I'm very- The Upper Iowa Speedway. 350 cans. Yeah, there.
• 16:48
And then, and then, and then, so when they, when, when, uh, Chockey and his kid brought the Toppling Goliath out, he first when he shows up with, with, with the Scorpion, and there was like 10 or 12 cases.
• 16:59
And I'm like, "Oh, this is not gonna fucking work. This is not enough beer." And then Ben shows up with the rest of it, like big boxes full of beer. Like, we filled that giant cooler and then some.
• 17:08
King Sue, King Sue no Sue. And then- And then somebody's like, "Did they just give you all the old beer?" And they look at the can and like, "This was canned like four days ago." Yeah. Three days ago.
• 17:16
Well, there were some dented ones. And then everybody's like, "I can't drink this anymore." So then Kayla said they did at least three trips back into town to buy Swilling Beer. Yeah.
• 17:25
Well, you don't, you were down there for that. So you- It would've been really nice to have, 'cause I was down there the whole time. Yeah, I would've loved a Busch Light in the middle of that. [laughs] Yeah.
• 17:32
I would've sat one down with one of the riders that never left. Yeah. Yeah. Should have sat one down. Well, there was some, there was some that never left.
• 17:37
There were some that just started the race and woke up at their hotel. [laughs] Thank you, Chewie, for driving. And I gave them a ride to their hotel. [laughs] That's awesome.
• 17:45
I, uh, my, my personal best for, uh, a single speed worlds was doing about, uh, 150 yards of a course once. Ooh. [laughs] That's a lot for you.
• 17:55
I got, I got, I got way in there, and then I, then there was some great heckling going on and I stopped. And- Were you with my kid at that time? Yes. [laughs] That was in Napa. Yeah, it was in Napa. Fantastic.
• 18:04
It's a town- Those are the best people. That was so fun... it's a town that still loves us. Yeah, yeah. But for, for most of people at dinner at Zico's, I gotta say thanks to O'Gara, 'cause I planned it out with O'Gara.
• 18:14
I don't know all the trails anymore, especially on the Ice Cave/Dunning side, and all the up and down. And he was able to say, "This is how we're gonna do it. Here's how there's no two-way traffic."
• 18:22
And I heard some people actually bitchin'. I know Gomez said that, he's like, "I think they took us up the hardest shit they have." And it's like, not on purpose. You just- That's the only way it works...
• 18:31
if you, if you're not gonna have two-way traffic here, you have to go that way. It's just kind of what we do. Hold on. We need to take a break. Hold on. Here it is. Um, yeah. All right, so now you can drink.
• 18:37
I might as well. Okay, I heard it. Not bad. I, I heard it. Move it. Take two. Take two. [paper rustles] Can you do that twice on one can? You did that twice. How'd that work? What? She just opened a can of beer twice.
• 18:49
[laughs] Hey, Brandon. Special skills. I know it just ends up trivial coming down here when there's [laughs] this allowance. Yeah. Oh, that's cool. We're gonna be...
• 18:55
We'll be the- You guys can go and- No, no, because you do... You have to understand. Brandon- Brandon, come on over... you're gonna come over and sit down. Yeah. Nobody listens to this- Come here... besides us. Oh, yeah.
• 19:03
Yeah, yeah. No, no, sit down. You got five minutes with us. Oh. Ladies and gentlemen, new to the podcast- [laughs]... right here- Wait, wait. Let's introduce ourselves... in Decorah, Iowa, Brandon.
• 19:12
You gotta sit over here, though. Like you were saying, you and I are sharing a mic anyway. So we can hear you. [laughs] Well, what are we, what are we casting about? Uh, the Singlespeed USA. It doesn't matter.
• 19:20
Your, your opinion. Oh, dude. Your opinion. What an amazing rush. Uh- [laughs]... good people and, and just good drinkers, man. Like, as a bar manager- They're the perfect ones...
• 19:27
what we want is for, uh, that to happen again here in Sadly it Can't, so it was a treat. I wouldn't say can't. Appreciate you guys. Well, it won't, not in Decorah anyway, from what I've come to understand.
• 19:35
It, it won't have the same title, but we can have that same party. Oh. All right. Yeah. Let's do it. Let's plan it. Plus, people can just come drink here. See, this is- I mean, that's fun...
• 19:41
this is the example of people who really enjoyed having all those assholes in town. No, I wouldn't say assholes. I'd say beer aficionados- Well, when I say asshole-... with bikes... when I say asshole,
• 19:49
I mean it in the nicest way. All right. All right. You know? Acceptable. [laughs] Yeah, no, it was, it was genuinely a great time. Everyone was awesome. Even for, like, people that are getting...
• 19:56
are here to drink and party, you guys were all well-behaved. That's awesome. I didn't have... Nobody got kicked out. Nobody got cut off. Like, seriously, I was, I was kinda planning for some crazies to happen.
• 20:04
We- Nothing. This is- Wow... here's the funny story. One of the- So we, we talked to Julie over at, uh, uh, your place when we were doing the packet handout on Friday night.
• 20:13
And so the whole thing was out there, and it just kinda spilled out into the alley. And then just like it was all full and all kinds of shit going on.
• 20:18
And Julie came out at one point, the owner of the bar, and I was like, "Man, I'm really sorry for all this. This is kinda cra-" She's like, "You know what? You guys have been great.
• 20:27
I've had more trouble with those four old ladies that just walked in the front door- [laughs]... than I have with you guys" That's true. And I was like, "That's the Decorah story." There you go. Yeah, it's true.
• 20:34
Our regulars, our regulars cause us more headache. [laughs] Yeah, it was, it was awesome. Well- And then on top of it, the Folkadol family reunion was right behind us. So, like, we would walk into a bar.
• 20:43
We would walk out. That family would walk in. There's what, 20 of them, 30 of them? Yes. And then, and then they would walk in, and then [laughs] we could walk in here.
• 20:49
And we're leaving, go to go home, and they're just walking in. It was, it was a constant shit show.
• 20:53
The secret, the secret to the Folkadols, not many people know that, but if you break off a piece of a Folkadol and drop it on the ground, it'll grow another Folkadol. [laughs] Oh, so it's like a succulent. Yeah, yeah.
• 21:01
It's like, it's how it goes. There's so many of them. What the Folkadol? Yeah, what the f- Yeah. At that point- It's true.
• 21:07
There's a lot [laughs] That is the nicest group of people in the world, but somehow there's more- Yeah, there's a lot of them... when you turn around, and you're like, "Was that, there that many of you before?" Yeah.
• 21:17
Who was that business owner? Well, somebody said, "What is gonna be the business impact?" I appreciate you guys. I gotta end up rolling back to work. All right. Thank you. Thank you for all you do for us.
• 21:25
Yes, thanks, Brandon. Thanks, Brandon. Brandon's awesome. He kicked ass for us. He, the bartenders had so much fun. You should say that- Yeah... the $500 car, 5,000. Oh, oh, oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. So- What's that?
• 21:36
Before the thing happened, uh, uh, there's a, there's a... I'm, I'm a business owner in downtown Decorah. Believe it or not. And, and, uh, there's a business owners Facebook group. Oh. And that's... It's kinda awesome.
• 21:49
And there's like, "Hey, does anybody have any extra bags?" Or, "I need some fives. Can I..." You know, you know, it's a very helpful bunch of people.
• 21:57
And somebody [laughs] saw some post that I did on one of these things, on the Singlespeed USA, and they're like, "Oh, look. There's a, there's a race coming to town. How is this gonna affect local businesses?
• 22:09
This looks like there's 200 people or so are gonna come in. Like, what, what can we expect?" And, like, radio silence for a long time. And I was like, "I don't know really how to explain this."
• 22:18
[laughs] And then finally- Don't tell the bookstore lady. [laughs] Right. And then finally somebody came in and said, "What's gonna happen?" And this is, this is Gail said this.
• 22:31
So she said, "There's gonna be a bunch of people driving into town on, in $500 cars with $5,000 bikes, drinking a bunch of beer up in the woods." I was like, "That's perfect." That's what it was.
• 22:41
That's exactly what happened. It was fun. And the, and the best part is we started telling that story, and I think people went in and bought books. [laughs] Nah. Those people, we can't read. Sales skyrocketed.
• 22:52
Best weekend ever. I mean, they do have picture books in there, which is nice. No, but I heard a lot of people that went to Impact. They went to Magpie and went to Teebox. I mean, they went to all the restaurants.
• 23:01
Oh, yeah. All the Airbnbs were full. Yeah. Um, all the stuff that I posted about- The economic impact was significant. [laughs] Well, they came here to spend money, so, I mean, that's good.
• 23:11
I've heard nothing but good things from the people that I've talked to in town. Did better than the, did better than the riverboat thing that didn't happen. Oh, the Viking cruises? Well- The Viking cruises. Yeah...
• 23:18
it'll happen next year. And, and the thing I wasn't gonna make Brandon admit, but th- we came back down here Sunday night after everything had kinda died out and talked to Brandon.
• 23:27
He says he's pretty sure this particular bar did more sales Friday and Saturday night of the, our race than they did all of Nordic Fest. Oh. I feel like one individual bought all the shots. Oh.
• 23:39
There, there was too many shots. So, so I was gonna... I was trying to figure out how to bring this up. So I have some... Well, I have...
• 23:45
The, the, you've met them, but th- they're more Singlespeed World guys than they are Singlespeed USA, but they kinda started the Singlespeed USA thing.
• 23:51
So it's DJ Bert, uh, Dave Butler, Jake Kirkpatrick, uh, Sammy, you know. And Sammy's the one that was buying all the shots. Sam Who Buys Shots? That's how I remembered his name. Yeah, Sammy Buys Shots.
• 24:00
Yeah, so Sammy's like- Sammy Mayhem whatnot. Well, Pat... Yeah, Scary Davey Jesus was there from Drunk Cyclist. I mean, it was a great bunch.
• 24:06
And, and the thing is, is, like, so Jake, uh, Jake lives in, in Boulder, Colorado. And Jake comes up to me and goes, "Dude- You have serious fucking climbing here.
• 24:16
And coming from a guy that lives there- Serious, oh, climbing? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, he was like... He, he's never been here before. He's seriously impressed with how good the trails were.
• 24:24
Well, my, my favorite Decorah story, uh, of most time is that, uh, when I first moved down here, I came from Minneapolis and I, you know, riding with people like Gino and whatnot, doing Wednesday night rides.
• 24:35
And so I, I started the dirt burger that short-lived, you know, whatnot, camp under the bridge and go drink. [laughs] Um, and so we had all these Minneapolis folks come, like maybe 20.
• 24:46
And then a bunch of Decorah people showed up. And like, well, it rained all night, so the Friday night, l- let, let's go for a ride in town.
• 24:52
Well, for Decorah, what that meant was like, "Let's go find a loading dock and jump off it- [laughs]... and take pictures of each other- Yeah... or whatever it is we did."
• 24:59
But instead, Mike Brower got at the front of that group, and we started doing these raging alley rides. And all the Decorah guys were like, "What the fuck is this? Ah!"
• 25:08
Just like barely- Finding alleys that we didn't even know existed [laughs]... barely hanging on, and just like sh- completely lost their minds. It was hilarious.
• 25:14
And, and, you know, just k- brought a little bit of Minneapolis down here.
• 25:17
The next day, everybody goes up, and, and the trails are dried out, so we go ride in the, in the trails, and all the Minneapolis guys are like, "What the fuck is this? It's so hard. Ah! Ah!"
• 25:27
[laughs] 'Cause there are, I don't know if you know this, no hills in Minneapolis. Oh, really? Yeah, it's true. Yes, I do know. Yeah. Are we g- are you doing Homey Fall Fest?
• 25:37
Uh, I haven't heard, which means it's probably happening. Yep, it's probably happening. So one can only- Yeah, I remember that... one can only assume. The, yeah, 'cause we were like the, the well-behaved...
• 25:46
Like, you don't go in somebody's back alley unless you absolutely need to. You don't just ride around town like that. [laughs] Well, yeah. He goes to the farm- Yeah... and everybody was like, "What the hell?
• 25:53
I didn't even know this existed." Yeah. "How did he find this?" Yeah, he's just, he, he... Brower can smell a good alley from- Going back to-... miles away...
• 26:00
going back to those other guys, the Colorado and Tucson guys that, that- Oh... showed up that were travelers, they actually tried to eat their way across town. They're like
• 26:08
s- S- Monday morning, they, before they're leaving town, they go, "Okay, where haven't we ate yet?" [laughs] So they, so we're like, "Oh." It's Don Jose. And, no, they've been there. They, like, they literally...
• 26:18
And they, they came over to my house with like three grocery bags of food. 'Cause they went to every restaurant- That's fantastic... in town and tried to eat and stood in the middle of all the shit they'd left over.
• 26:25
The only downside was that, uh, somebody drove their car through a family table, so they couldn't go get pancakes. Oh, that's right. Yeah. Oh. Yeah, yeah. It happened. Oh, well. But they, uh, yeah, it's, uh, um, um...
• 26:37
Sue was rather impressed when she walked down here tonight. First time she's been down since this happened, and I think I've been down a couple times. And she's- Town's in one piece. [laughs] Oh, the town's...
• 26:46
There's no broken windows. It's like a smo- smoking crater. She went, literally, she walks in the house, she goes, "Doesn't look too bad." [laughs] And I'm like, "What? Not that many."
• 26:54
That's 'cause nobody wanted to hang out with you. No. No. No, no, no, no, no. Nobody slept at your house. Are we gonna talk about Friday night when you didn't stop by my house? Uh, yes. Ouch. I mean, I had to work.
• 27:04
It sounds like no star work. You were going home from work. Oh, did you tell the Sam story? Let me tell it. [laughs] No, you told me. Sam story. Can I tell the Sam story? Yeah, please do. Oh, yeah. By all means.
• 27:12
Hand part. Hand part. S- so it, they're at, the first night, at the packet pickup, Sam was there trying to... He bought all the shots again. All the shots. Yep. And then he was trying to buy more.
• 27:22
That was a lot of shots. And he was, like, passing out at the bar, and his head was, like, hitting the table. Uh, and- Oh, is that Sam, the beardo guy? Sam McGowan. Yeah. That was Friday night, though.
• 27:29
Sam with the shots. Not Thursday night. Friday. Friday night. That's like his, yeah, that's his name now. 'Cause he was here on Thursday night with a bunch of shots. So he gets out his money- Sammy Shots...
• 27:34
and Julie's like, "I am not buying you shots." Shots. He's got his card out, he's got his wallet out, he's got money, and he's like, "I am not buying you shots." And then he puts his head on the table.
• 27:42
DJ Reese around, grabs the money, goes, he's like, "Can we have 10 beers?" [laughs] And she's like, "Okay, I'll sell them to you." And then he takes the wallet, puts it in his pocket, 'cause he knows Sam's passing out.
• 27:52
Sam goes back to your place the next morning, like, "Can I- 'Cause we care about people... can I get my wallet?" And he's like, "Ah, you don't have your wallet? You didn't take your wallet?" And he's like, "Oh, shit."
• 28:00
Can't find the wallet, doesn't have the wallet anywhere. So he calls and cancels all his cards. So he's sitting there calling, canceling his card. Oh, shoot. One after one after one.
• 28:07
He cancels his very last card, and DJ goes, "Oh- "Hey, wait. What do I got?" [laughs]... here's your wallet." It was in his front pocket the whole time.
• 28:15
[laughs] But he did save the rest of us from, like, having to, like, consume tons of shots- At least he wasn't able to buy-... for a little while... yeah, trays of shots again, so. Yeah.
• 28:22
Although he does owe you $20, 'cause he did not have his registration fee. Oh. Oh, snap. Unregistered rider. Sammy did not pay his registration fee. Unregistered rider. He also did not have his wallet.
• 28:32
That's- You know what? You know what that is? We have officially disqualified him. Uh-oh. He's out. That's it. Wow. Right now. Well, he did not get 174th place anymore. [laughs] Went straight to the top.
• 28:42
Went straight from 174th to 100 and- Then went around... 100 millionth. Yeah. [laughs] Take that- No, but-... for buying us shots... and then the decider, uh- Oh, yeah. I- So there was some confusion around the decider.
• 28:56
Should I explain what happened or not? [laughs] Yes, because, because- Whatever... I, how could you make it any clearer? What? The- It was, it was simple. Was it to draw tippy? You, yeah, you did the perfect thing.
• 29:05
It was draw tippy. Yeah, draw tippy the turtle. Everybody knows tippy. Well, no, so that put it down to two teams. Right. Oh, yeah. With the decider between New England and Kansas City. I had a great decider.
• 29:13
You wouldn't do it. [laughs] Ooh. The, they had to axe the ring or what? That was a great decider. Not everybody- The final?... is gonna bleach their asshole in front of the entire crowd. All those guys would have.
• 29:22
That's why it's the decider. [laughs] That's why it's the decider. You decide if you want this race or not. That's why it's the decider here at Decorah Upper Iowa Speedway. We're gonna be waxing.
• 29:33
[laughs] Everything sounds better when he says it. Oh, boy. I once, I once actually got interviewed by Les Askelson, uh, you know, down at the- The local radio dude...
• 29:44
down at the dirt bike, who actually does that, he does the announcing at the speedway, and he sounds like that on the radio.
• 29:50
And he was, and I was on the fire department at the time, and he's like, "Ladies and gentlemen, we have Eric Sovern here from the Decorah Fire Department.
• 29:56
And, uh, Eric, tell us about the, uh, the event that's coming up." And it was everything I could do, did I go, "Well, I'll tell you, Les. This is what's gonna happen."
• 30:03
[laughs] "We're gonna have the best time you've ever seen." But I didn't do that 'cause I'm not an asshole to somebody's face Yeah, shut up. Yeah, shut up. I'm an asshole later Behind their back, yes Ugh.
• 30:14
Just behind their back, is that what you're saying? Midwestern, yeah, totally. Midwestern- Four years later on a podcast, no passive aggression [laughs] You got it. You got that guy. You got it.
• 30:21
Four people are gonna get that joke. Yes. Well said. Maybe five if we get lucky, but I think it's gonna be four. No, so we had axes.
• 30:26
We actually went and built axes to throw, and then we're trying to throw them into cardboard. 'Cause you saw the trophy axes earlier. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We made actual hatchet ones that should have stuck better.
• 30:35
[laughs] And, uh, so we bas- Into a piece of cardboard. Yeah, we were just throwing and throwing and throwing. It wasn't working, wasn't working, wasn't working. Yeah. So, um, I didn't have a backup plan.
• 30:44
[laughs] Who's out there? That's- You should have asked us, Spinner, 'cause we probably could have come up with one... Trevor. Oh, yeah. I mean- I mean, really...
• 30:50
sometimes you just, you gotta lean on the people that know shit. Okay. Could've had, like, a motorboat contest. [laughs] I mean... There were 17 dudes from Kansas City. That would take a while.
• 31:02
I'm pretty sure they would've had some fun with that- Yeah... with a certain somebody. Well, okay, so New England hosted last year in Maine, and then Kansas City has been trying to host this thing forever.
• 31:10
And it was kinda like- Trying, trying and failing... once Colorado was... Jake couldn't follow the rules of how to draw a tippy. [laughs] So that, that was, that was the fun part because I, this- God, God bless him...
• 31:21
it's always been drinking games and feats of strengths. And I, I talked to Sav ahead of time. I'm like, "What if this came down to critical thinking?" [laughs] But Sav's like, "Oh, I got you."
• 31:29
When everybody's drunk, that's what he thinks. What if, what if we had an art contest? [laughs] So, yeah. I said, "I got a big-ass pad of paper and some crayons." Yeah. [laughs] Cardboard robot.
• 31:40
And, yeah, and my co- and my grandkids say thank you, by the way. Oh, you bet they do. Because they hold up the paper. That's awesome. They didn't get the tippy with the dick on the head, did they? Oh.
• 31:48
Oh, that wa- okay, that was the most dispoint- disappoint- disappointing thing of the whole fucking thing. I was assuming that- Because, yeah... I was assuming there'd be dicks on everything.
• 31:54
And I was like, we need a big piece of paper 'cause there's gonna be nothing but dicks on this, and there wasn't one fucking dick drawn. No, tippy. They, they all should have been fired. Seth- Nobody would engage...
• 32:03
Seth's tippy had a huge dick hat on. It was a turtle with a dick hat. This lack of drawing dicks has been brought to you by Cardboard Robots.
• 32:08
[laughs] Cardboard Robot, downtown Decorah, where you can find all your art supplies for not drawing male anatomy. [laughs] But the bigger problem is, is Cardboard Robots is a big sponsor.
• 32:19
What did we get out of them other than the best, the best race in the state? We saw them out two nights in a row. I think that's worth it. One pad, oh, that's right, one pad of paper, eight crayons- [laughs] [laughs]...
• 32:27
and my presence. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Wait, wait, wait. There was a very small box that Moffat picked up and brought up to GT Park for you to start the big fire. Oh, that's right. [laughs] Was a small box.
• 32:38
I mean, it's a cardboard place. That's why I said- No, it's not dude, that was your kids doing... smallest box ever. Yeah, so I called, I called... My kid was running the store. That's my M.
• 32:45
I'm never gonna finish my story. But, but- [laughs] Oh, are you still, are you still talking? No, sorry, we're done. Go. Go. Now I forgot. All right.
• 32:54
So I- So- I said we gotta start a fire up at the thing, and, and I was, I was realizing that we have no... We have big logs, because, you know- Yeah... O'Hara was in charge of that. Yeah.
• 33:04
And so there's, there's a lot of wood, but none of it- Kinda wet... usable. Yeah. And so I said... I called my kid and I said, "Get a, get a one of them boxes of, uh, of packing paper.
• 33:15
Moffat's gonna come by and give him, get my big hunting or camping knife, you know, for chopping wood and whatnot." And, uh, so he comes up.
• 33:23
He's got a box, like, like eight inches by eight inches full of like six pieces of paper, and I was like, "Ah, that's not really gonna do it."
• 33:30
[laughs] But then, but then I realized that the dude thing that you can do at something like this is you can just make it a feat of strength. First of all, we had a mall up there, so I was like- Yeah.
• 33:39
"All right, feats of strength. Who could split the wood?" And of course, guys are just like, "I believe I can split the wood 'cause I'm a badass." [laughs] And so that all happened, and there were some legit badasses.
• 33:48
That's exactly what happened. And then I, and then I did the thing where I was like, "I can't start the fire. I don't know what's going on. Everything's not working."
• 33:54
And then eight guys go, "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Let me start the fire for you." [laughs] And then you picked up the banjo. Yes. See- And there were tunes... that's how that works.
• 34:02
Uh- It's a masterclass on getting a fire started when you don't know how to [laughs] fucking do it yourself. You gotta give those guys credit. They got into it.
• 34:08
They, they all pull out their Boyneys they were carrying with them while they're riding, and I'm not under- [laughs]... understanding that whole thing.
• 34:13
And they're, and they're like, they're using the maul, chop on it, and they got all these little slivers of wood going, and they got it going. It was fantastic. And they got, they were so proud of themselves.
• 34:19
They're like, "Okay, beer's gone. See ya." [laughs] Yeah, and we got this kickass fire started, then the race was over.
• 34:24
[laughs] And somebody was- And somebody was feeling super manly, though, because they left their shorts hanging in the tree. Ooh. They are now at my house. Ooh, you got some free shorts out of the deal. Trophy. Trophy.
• 34:33
We did. We got some free shorts out of the deal. Exactly. Half the riders on this course, half the riders in this event- Boom... have something to light something. [laughs] [laughs] They are carrying lighting materials.
• 34:43
I don't know what you're talking about. It didn't, it didn't smell like weed on the top of that trail at all. Yeah. At all. There was a surprising small amount of fireworks, which I was happy with.
• 34:51
We had a lot of fireworks down below to start with- Yeah... and then some people had dogs, and we knocked that off. Up top we, we had no, no rules against fireworks. There were some.
• 35:00
We heard some down below, but not a lot. Oh, to finish my decider story. So- [laughs] You remember it? I do remember it because it got to the point where it was like, okay, we're gonna throw axes. I'm drunk.
• 35:10
Everybody's drunk. We're gonna throw these axes that don't really stick, and I wanna make sure I hide them from this group as soon as this challenge is done. [laughs] So after I saw that,
• 35:19
Seth from New England is extremely on top of it. Like, I don't know how much he drank, but he's like one of those guys that can drink and still function very well.
• 35:28
I looked at the Kansas City dudes and I said, "Uh, fuck." [laughs] [laughs] So, like, they're raring to go. I'm like, "Let's just negotiate this. Let's just talk." New England, they wanna host in New England.
• 35:39
They weren't sure where. Kansas City's been wanting to host, so it was just like, "You guys host it." Do, do they know that New England is not a state? They do. I'm like, "So where in New England?" Yeah.
• 35:47
And they're like, "Oh, it could be Rhode Island, could be here, could be there." I'm like, "That's, that's not enough." Those are counties. Yeah, so.
• 35:53
[laughs] Do, do you understand that they don't- Rhode Island could fit in this bar. [laughs] Fair. There's no designation as to which Kansas City it's going to? Oh, snap, so it could go to two different states.
• 36:03
It could be. Ooh. Could be. Could be. Nope. It could be. Could happen. Would this be, like, your first multi-state? Could be a bi-state. Oh. Could be a bi-state. Oh, bi-state.
• 36:10
No, but, uh, basically they negotiated- Oh, by the way, all the- Did you steal the, all the jokes? [laughs] Yeah, I did see that go. You don't even wanna know. I, I, uh- For some reason- It was gonna be pretty mellow...
• 36:20
for some reason one of, uh, Andy Carson's stickers came up and [laughs] he's like- One, two, three Oh, yeah. Try before you buy... before you buy. [laughs] And that was going on all...
• 36:29
I think it started with- Try- Yeah, because, because she has a- Try TRI Yeah, TRI. Yeah. Yeah. You have your bike or talking about your bike and it's like, "Oh, yeah, try before you buy."
• 36:38
And the rest of the fucking weekend that's all... it was brought up all the time. Jesus Christ. Sorry. [laughs] You're welcome. Feel like you pulled a three-way in a Haymaker, that'd be a three-dog night. [laughs] Snap.
• 36:48
Ladies and gentlemen, this pro- joke has been brought to you by the Upper Iowa Speedway. [laughs] What, what. B Mods, hobby stocks, stock cars, Hornets. Yeah. Get it going. So but, yeah, it came down to just negotiate.
• 37:02
So I'm not sure what the negotiation exactly ended up as. So it was words? It's either it wa- either... So Kansas City gets it next year. I'm not sure if it automatically goes to- I don't think Kansas City gets it.
• 37:13
This... [laughs] Kansas City doesn't get shit as far as I'm concerned. All right. Let me get through this. [laughs] Tell your story. Shut up. [laughs] So Kansas- Are you done yet?
• 37:21
And I'm not sure if New England automatically gets it, but I remember at some point I think they just stood back and said, "You know what? Go to Kansas City and we'll just fucking win it again." So- Yeah, yeah.
• 37:30
They, they admitted that they, they go, "It can go to Kansas City. We'll win it no matter what." Yeah. So there's some, there's some confidence there. There was some confidence. I mean, it...
• 37:37
And they did a great job hosting it. They- It'd be fine going back out there- Yeah... but I'm just like, you guys just hosted. Was it- Let's, let's let Kansas City get it.
• 37:46
Wasn't Kan- wasn't it Kan- no, wasn't it one of the guys that, that when we did it in Texas that [laughs] they got mad at the gun didn't shoot straight, so they threw the gun at one of the guys? No, that was Kansas City.
• 37:55
That was Kansas City. [laughs] They... when, uh, somebody threw the gun at Thad at the back of his head, and so, like, they were so gung ho to win they knocked out their own team. [laughs] With- [laughs] Shit...
• 38:04
we were using Nerf guns and shooting up beer cans, and they're, they're, like, missing all the time, so the guy just threw the gun and hit one of their own guys in the back of the head.
• 38:11
Yeah, some guy's running out there, like, make sure the can wasn't sticking, and a guy threw the gun at the same time.
• 38:15
[laughs] There was, there was one point I believe in the, uh, in the discussions, uh, leading up to this, and by that I mean the night before- [laughs]... uh, where we had talked about, um...
• 38:26
Remember the time we did the, the time trial with the BB guns? Yeah. And you, like, hang the g- hang the beer cans in the tree, and if you hit a beer can you get some time off. Was that in Copper Harbor?
• 38:34
No, no, it was here. Oh. It was, it was for one of the, like, Tuesday night- Oh, one of the Tuesday night jams. Time trials. This is, like, 10 years ago or something.
• 38:40
And everybody's like, "That would be super fun to do this again." And everybody looked like, looked at each other and we're like, "Give these guys weapons?" Yeah. [laughs] Negative. No, no, no, because we did...
• 38:51
Was it Copper Harbor we did- Yes... you were trying to shoot the beer can off the dock? Well- But you weren't there.
• 38:56
You're supposed to jump from one dock, swim over, chug a beer, put it on there, swim back, and then shoot the beer can off. That's right. I do remember that. Yeah. That was super fun.
• 39:04
And, and, and the one, the one teammate fucking fell asleep on the beach. [laughs] Do you know how many times I got shot- [laughs]... by my ex-girlfriend? Three, two. [laughs] That was stupid. I was standing on...
• 39:16
I'm like, "What the fuck? What the fuck?" I would say it was less than the amount of times that- [laughs]... all of your ex-girlfriends would like to have shot you. That's fair.
• 39:24
[laughs] That's the year that you just said... I was just walking through, casually walking through the park, I'm like, "Who would like to wrestle this man?" [laughs] Oh, that was a good, that was a- Did I do that?
• 39:33
[laughs] No, no, no. So let's bring up your wrestling this weekend. Yeah. Oh. That guy was drugged out. [laughs] That didn't... Do I look like somebody you should fuck with? I mean, everywhere I go- [laughs]...
• 39:45
it was like, "I'm gonna pick on that guy." Yeah. Well, in all honesty, you did look pretty fucked up. So I mean, I- It'd be like- I mean, if you were gonna pick someone...
• 39:51
if any time is gonna be the time- It was gonna be Thader... this is the time. Yes. Yeah. No. I get, I get... I mean, not, not in any, in any way, uh, similar to your situation, but people see me that I'm, like, tall.
• 40:04
I'm a big human being. Yeah. And they think, "Maybe I'll fuck with that guy." [laughs] I was like, "Eh, that doesn't seem very wise." Yeah. And, you know, I'll just run away, so it's no big deal.
• 40:13
But yeah, if they look at you and say, "I'm gonna fuck with that," that just, that's a sign of serious instability. Yeah. And, and, and I'll tell your Sammy story 'cause you were... Everybody was after you.
• 40:24
Sam- you and Sammy was- When I put the bucket on his head and spun him around? Well- [laughs]... that's, or I've seen more people go, "What are you guys doing?" [laughs] Oh, yeah.
• 40:31
So we're sitting at the bar, and, like, Sammy's all fucking hammered, and he's sitting there and he's like, "We should fight." I'm, like, looking around like, "Fight who?" And he goes, "Each other."
• 40:41
[laughs] [laughs] I'm like, "No. No, we should not." Oh. And he was, like, he could barely crawl at that point probably. But the first rule of Single Speed USA Fight Club is talk a lot about Single Speed USA Fight Club.
• 40:54
[laughs] But I will say, Spinner, when you slapped, uh, the band on his ankle he did look a little afraid. [laughs] Yeah, just saying. [laughs] Well, I, I don't know.
• 41:03
A l- Ogaro was there to pin him or whatever, so it's... after three times it gets... just stop. Maybe he's not aware of the, uh, of the choke slam. No, I don't think so.
• 41:12
And he, to be fair, he was walking around town without a shirt on. I think he didn't have a shirt on when he came in. [laughs] So he didn't get in there to take his shirt off. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, that'll happen. Yeah.
• 41:21
I think- He appreciated the entertainment. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, the... I mean, I think it was the choke slam of 2010. Where Death Valley got his name? [laughs] Is that what this is? That's what Jackie says. I don't know.
• 41:32
[laughs] I didn't realize he had no idea what wrestling was and he was gonna fly that fucker. [laughs] I think that photo, uh, says volumes about everything that we stand for. Yeah. Yeah. Is, that's the Lunds photo?
• 41:44
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Da- Dave Lunds, uh, feet higher than his head. Higher than my head. [laughs] Higher than your head. Uh, Spinner's hand on his throat. [laughs] You've seen it. And, um- No?... it was- Really?
• 41:57
I mean, I was surprised he walked away. Yeah. Everybody was. Yeah, he, he was this high off the ground. That's why there's pictures, like, leading up to it. There's pictures before.
• 42:04
There's pictures in the mirror, picture in the... And like everybody dropped their cameras at one point. I only know this much of one. Oh my God, is he alive?
• 42:09
And, and you know when this is a classic that Dave Lunds made it out of LEGOs. Oh, yeah. [laughs] He did. Did he really? Oh, yeah. He's got, like, groundskeeper Willie for Ogaro. Dick Carter, like, all the like...
• 42:19
[laughs] Oh my God. "Dude, Dave rocked my neck, dude. Oh, dude, it rocked my neck."
• 42:25
But I will say, though, for people from Decorah, like, seeing Spinner lift people, like, above his head was like- That's just a thing, you know...
• 42:30
it's a pretty average occurrence- Yeah, it's like, that's like a Tuesday, right?... every day. Like, look over there, there's no longer a, um- A ceiling fan going on... a ceiling fan. Yeah, thank God. Oh.
• 42:39
And, and there's a ceiling tile up there that I think either- Met the same fate... your head or Kelly's head went through. Yeah. I don't know. He, he seems to forget that.
• 42:46
Sometimes he t- he picks tall girls up, and they're closer to the ceiling to start with. Yeah, that's- Yeah... whoops. Ceiling fan's going to drop Tough word. Yeah, and by the way, the fan was on that night, too.
• 42:55
Oh, whap, whap, whap. Oops, okay. Ouch. Sorry. [laughs] That, that'll happen. Sorry to whoever that happened to. That'll happen. Did you just seriously say that? What? [laughs] "Sorry to whoever that happened to."
• 43:06
[laughs] Was it you? Like, fucking seriously, [laughs] you're- You were really drunk, and I don't know if- Oh my God, you're such a moron. [laughs] No. No, no, no, no, no. I was probably 30 beers in, just chill.
• 43:17
I, I've heard this story 15 times. I did not know it was you. [laughs] I didn't either. [laughs] I came back in and apologized to Brandon, only to, and I'm so fucking sorry.
• 43:27
[laughs] I'm sorry I broke your bar with my head. [laughs] Yeah, that's your fault. That's on you. In somebody else's doing. Yeah, 'cause I just jumped up there all by myself when I was hammered. That's it.
• 43:37
[laughs] I just floated up and broke your- Yeah... ceiling fan with my face. I can do amazing things, but I don't think that's it. One thing I wish we had- If Aaron was any shorter...
• 43:43
was the, would be the, uh, if anybody got pictures, like, I had a drone of all the bikes going through downtown. That would've been sweet. That would've been- You guys probably didn't see that.
• 43:52
No, because we were working. We were setting up the course. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] We were just like- It would've been amazing... if you get... Yeah, so right before the race- Like, do these cars go here?
• 44:00
Which way do they go? Does it go over here? And if you don't think this is not the first time that this shit's happened, I mean, it was like, it felt like time trial shit all over.
• 44:07
We're all sitting there watching the weather, only instead of sitting at Deek's house with a cup of coffee and a beer, we're, like, looking at our phones, looking at the weather. Is this gonna be super fucked up?
• 44:16
Yep, okay. [laughs] I, I kinda, I kinda wanted to just, I wanted to bring everybody up to your house just to sit in your living room and do that shit- Oh... 'cause that was what used to happen.
• 44:22
Oh, that, it's all different now. I painted the ceiling. Oh. [laughs] What? No go. Yeah, I scraped all that paint that was falling off. Nope, can't do it anymore. All right, done.
• 44:31
No, but, uh, so yeah, right before, I was planning to ride down by the high school and into the flats, so I'm like, we went to the stoplight, turned by Vac and State Bank, and we went right down Water Street.
• 44:39
And I was hoping everybody would fit in one city block. That would be perfect. Nobody... I guess we took, like, two blocks. Like- I think like four, by the end. Four going down City Water...
• 44:46
I was, I was thinking about this city application. They're like, "What streets do you need to close?" I'm like- [laughs]... "We're gonna stop at traffic lights. This is gonna be perfect. We're following laws.
• 44:53
This, we don't need-" You should've said, "Close them all." [laughs] That would've cost money. Yeah. And maybe not been approved after we had the event. Yes. So- [laughs]...
• 45:01
that would've been terrible if they would've denied us after. [laughs] So, but- Alls I could think of is there's no cops in front of my house all weekend, so we, it had to have been a success.
• 45:10
The, uh, I gotta, I gotta give shout-outs to the Decorah Police Department, uh, for stopping by the, uh, the derby and watching. Yeah, [laughs] that's what they did do. They loved that shit.
• 45:21
Yeah, they're up in the corner watching. They loved it. Yeah, they were like, "This is, you don't see this every day, do you?" And then, I mean, honestly- So who was watching? Who stopped? I, I don't know who was there.
• 45:30
I, I, all I heard, you know, by that time I was already in my jammies and asleep. [laughs] What? I was like, "Is the derby going on? See ya. Gotta go." Oh. Yeah. You did, you did do a nice sneak out there.
• 45:42
I, I gave two Irish goodbyes in two days. It was fantastic. You're like, "Oh, look at the time. Gotta, gotta go. Gotta go."
• 45:49
No, they just sat and watched, and I mean, to be fair, we were on private property by, uh- Yeah, and it was, everyone was cool... we didn't have permission, but [laughs]...
• 45:57
like, it was knocking, knocking each other over and not breaking anything else. That's cool. And Burkhardt won, unfortunately. He fell on top of another Dubuque guy, and I was like, "Did you fucking register?
• 46:06
Because if you reg- didn't register, I'm not giving you the belt." He said he did, and I still don't know if he did or not. So, [laughs] I mean, I think- Becca, that's your call There were so many of you.
• 46:15
I need my sheets. Where are my sheets? [laughs] What do you need? My sheets. Where are my sheets? For what? What are you doing? My, my, my beautiful registration sheets that have everyone's name on them.
• 46:23
Oh, and I, I have it. Okay. Then I don't need to ask for that. I can't read the, I can't read the handwriting. The blue handwriting. They, there were so many of you. Send it my way. I can read it. Yeah.
• 46:32
[laughs] Yeah, you did find that. I did find the Zach Voss. Yeah. There were so many of you. We can take his belt back if he's not on there. Yeah. We'll go track it down. Uh, here's, here's my, here's my opinion on that.
• 46:40
Uh, the truth is we're never gonna see that fucking belt again. Ah, fuck it. Oh, ouch. Oh, fuck it. We'll go find it. Brett cannot- We can say it's a co-championship... be missing.
• 46:47
Him and, uh, Sam W- or, uh, Ernie Davis. Otis Davis? Ernie Davis? Uh, I think it's Otis, isn't it? Otis. Yeah, Otis with the hair. Otis with the good hair. Oh, no. Ernie has the hair. Oh, Ernie hair. Ernie, you're right.
• 46:57
Ernie with the good hair. Otis won the belt. That's Burkhardt. Yeah, but Lance had better hair. I'm sorry, w- was this not about the hair? Same. That wasn't the point of this podcast? It's totally about the hair.
• 47:04
No, it is. It's definitely a fashion show. Yes. That's what we're here for. Lance had the best hair. Um, what else? Oh, the giveaway, the bike. Unfortunately, the guy that won the bike lives right next to State Bicycle.
• 47:15
[laughs] Like, like, yeah, so [laughs] yeah, so like literally- And he has one. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, d- yeah, they, they're like literally- That's not unfortunate. That's, that's, you chose to live there.
• 47:24
You chose to be in the radius. Which, which, but- Kick ass, like, you did it... but it, but it's also why that all those years that I would buy a, a one-by-one frame and give it away- Oh, yeah...
• 47:34
um, I never- Beck certainly used to care... get pictures of this? Yeah. Get pictures of this for the thing? 'Cause Chewy's gonna ask me tomorrow, and I don't have to take them. Yeah. Yeah. Could somebody do pictures?
• 47:41
Okay. I'm on it. And then, and then, so we did, we did, uh, we did the, uh, RAGBRAI one last night, and, and all's, all's, Kelly did those videos, [laughs] and I don't think, I don't think Greg wants videos. No.
• 47:52
[laughs] It's like, Goddammit. Pretend like it matters. Yeah. We're, we'll all stop talking, like, 'cause there's a photo going on. Nobody in the podcast universe. It's only happening to you. All three people.
• 48:01
Yo, get all of us, not just Shannon. What's going on here? Yeah. Why are you just- It's only happening to you. What are you- Why are you just taking pictures of Shannon all the time here?
• 48:06
I am the fucking prettiest of all of you guys over here. Oh. There's no argument. Come on. Why? Yeah, no, that's, that's pretty much a duh right there. Yeah. Yeah. And so now she's not filming you anymore. Thanks, guys.
• 48:15
Well, that'll happen. What's this song? This is Dead South. Oh. Um, you know them, right? All right. He's g- Oh, I know Dancing. I know, I know Winnipeg. I know Winnipeg, so... They're out of Canada. Yeah.
• 48:27
I was in, we were in Platteville- I mean-... one night and these guys just showed up playing in the city hall, like, literally, like, just rocking out. Like, we'd never heard of them before.
• 48:33
We went in there and the whole place is just going nuts. In, in Madison? In, in Platteville. Really? Yes. Oh. The poor man's Decorah.
• 48:39
[laughs] [laughs] That's why I lived there, till I saved enough money I could move back. [laughs] That is funny. [laughs] I became a richer man in Platteville and moved to Decorah.
• 48:49
[laughs] Where does, where does Viroqua slot in on that? [laughs] It's like- [laughs]... it's, I don't know, or, or the, or, or [laughs]... They wanna be. They're, I mean, they're in the category.
• 48:59
They got some good trails over there. They, they got some, you know, some good bike shops that support the trails. That's true. It's- They got... I love them. Yeah. Now, plus, I gotta admit, and this is a...
• 49:09
I, I grew up in Iowa, and I lived, like, 15 years in Minnesota, and I gotta say, Wisconsin's got it going on. Oh my God. I mean- It's so-... that whole state's about drinking outside It really is.
• 49:20
And they l- and they love, I mean, they, y- they're the only people I know that can fry fish. Uh-huh. And they're the only people- With a Brady Old Fashioned? They're the only people I... You know- Oh...
• 49:27
you know when somebody called- No... a Brady Old Fashioned to me, uh, somebody from Wisconsin said... I was like, "Oh, the Brady Old Fashioneds are great." He, and he said, "Oh, you mean the wedding drink?"
• 49:37
[laughs] [laughs] I was like, "That's the best." Oh, man. That is the best. Yeah, I, I, my top, out of my top 10 bars in the world, 15 of them are in Wisconsin. [laughs] As, yeah. Well, yeah.
• 49:53
Anything, when you're driving down the road- And a bar in the same city... and you see a PBR sign on the side of the road, you pull into that bar. Yeah. Yeah.
• 49:59
And every time two roads come together, it's a reason enough to have a bar there. There's a corner. There's definitely... Yep, and there's patrons. And a lot of them, too. Oh, fuck yeah. Yeah.
• 50:08
And you don't speak during the Packers game, but that's okay. I mean- And so much for not drinking and driving either. Well, when I was- 'Cause then you gotta get home...
• 50:13
yeah, when I was living there as a Vikings fan, I, I recently transitioned after the Kirk Cousins thing. But it was, like, l- going to a whole- Recently transitioned? [laughs] To Packer.
• 50:23
I was a Vikings fan in Wisconsin for a long time, and they betrayed the fuck out of me. Oh. And they lose. And when the Packers play shitty, they still win, so it's like Packers score, I still get a shot.
• 50:32
So I get more shots if the Packers are playing the Vikings. [laughs] Traitor. It, uh, yeah, I, I, I believe in that. For my heritage, I feel like, you know those Native Americans that don't want Indian names at schools?
• 50:43
That's how I feel about the Minnesota Vikings and every fucking- [laughs] [laughs] They're shitty fucking players. Or you just wanna drink shots. I don't know. Yeah. What is it? One of the two. Shots.
• 50:51
Six of one, half a dozen of the other in there. Yeah. How, how long are we going on this? 'Cause I might, I might have to do, like, a legitimate thank you at some point.
• 50:58
I think, I think we're- [laughs] No, we could, we... Well, might as well. We did an hour and 15 last night. Might as well do an hour tonight, so we got 10 minutes? Oh my God, I gotta get to sleep. Nine minutes.
• 51:05
Oh my God, can you... Yeah. Uh, 10 minutes. Sav's turning into a pumpkin. Yeah. Look at this guy. [snores] Oh. [laughs] You got a half a beer yellin', buddy. Yeah. Shape up. His wife is like, "Keep him down there."
• 51:16
[laughs] Oh, she's- I can't sleep when he's home. I'm pretty sure that she's gonna stop by my house and eventually just chew my ass off for keeping him up this late. Nah, she loves you. Me? She loves you more than me.
• 51:24
But don't tell her. [laughs] Oh, I gotta talk to her. I gotta convince her I'm on that list for the Fall Dead thing. I think we're on there. Do we take call-ins? What? [laughs] Ooh. We call her? Yes.
• 51:34
[laughs] That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Is that... You give me two seconds to hook up, we can call her. [laughs] Go for it. You, you wake her up- Gotta do it... as I was putting this phone away.
• 51:43
You wake her up and it's your problem, not mine. Well, actually, you're the one that has to go home to her though, right? Yeah, but if you call... Well, here's the thing.
• 51:51
[laughs] If you call her, her phone is, like, downstairs. She doesn't give a shit, so... [laughs] Well, we can do our real thank yous. Real- Oh, real thank yous... things real quick. Wheel, the wheel thank yous?
• 52:00
Wheel, wheel thank yous? Yes. At hour, minute 52. [laughs] Ladies and gentlemen, the real thank yous, brought to you by the Upper Iowa Speedway. [laughs] I wanna make sure Zach listens to this. The, the n- Zach Hernes.
• 52:13
[laughs] I, honest to God, the next event we do, those fuckers better sponsor us. Hell yeah. Uh, I love the Upper Iowa Speedway. I love the races, I love the sound of them, I love the smell of them, I love going to them.
• 52:22
I love them. I- So do a lot of people at the race because they miss the, the awards and shit 'cause they went to the races. So yeah, so, and the best- [laughs] I heard, I heard those going off.
• 52:29
I was like, "I hope everybody is there." So I have two stories about that. So there's two different groups that went there. There was the, there was the Tucson guys. So Jim Rook actually makes custom go-kart races.
• 52:41
That's, that's his job. And, and, and, and so he was there with a bunch... You know, Matt Whitman and, and some of those guys were all there.
• 52:47
And then the other group, which would be Gino and Randall, those guys, they go, "So where do you go to hang out to watch the stock car races so you don't have to pay?" [laughs] The Palisades.
• 52:57
At- Yeah, that's what I said... everybody knows if you're going to Palisades, it's free. And the, and the, and the best part is is that they found 30 other people doing the same thing- [laughs]...
• 53:05
so they were happy, too. Oh, yeah. Uh- It's not a super secret hideout anymore. No, it's really not. I mean, it's, it's all about getting there first. You know- Yeah... like, go there at, like, 3:00 PM.
• 53:14
So my guess is, seriously, my guess is we had about
• 53:18
25 people, 'cause, 'cause the Whitman group was at least 10, and I don't know how many Gino grabbed with him, so we probably had about 25 people that came here to race bicycles and went to the stock car races- Absolutely...
• 53:27
in one form or another. The stock car races are the, are, they're just badass. And here's the thing, I don't want anybody ever to get hurt, but I do want them to spin out and hit each other.
• 53:35
[laughs] You know what I mean? Like, that's fun. That's just good fun.
• 53:39
And they, I mean, and there's some super talented racers, they're super great people, and, and sometimes it's just, you know, mayhem, but, uh, it's always crazy fun. That's my, that's my plug. Go to the races.
• 53:50
Did you ever work the races? Oh, hell yeah. Okay. Yeah. [laughs] All that... But I got dizzy, 'cause I would just- Ah, me too... have to spin in a circle. Yes.
• 53:57
So the fire department always sends a truck down, and the ambulance sends an ambulance there so that, you know, in case somebody catches on fire, we can put them out, and the ambulance can take them away. Yeah.
• 54:06
And, uh, when I was on the fire department, like, you know, it was, like, three or four weekends a year, you'd go and, and work the races and stand there. Be the rescue.
• 54:13
And I didn't, I didn't really get it that you should stop just spinning around watching the race cars. Oh, you're supposed to watch corners. Yeah. Like, you have to watch two corners- Yeah...
• 54:21
I mean, in case shit happens, but then you start watching cars. Yeah. You quit, quit watching your corner. You're watching the race. I was very good at that. Somebody fucking crash back there? Fuck.
• 54:27
[laughs] You didn't get the memo? Super. Super. All right. You got- Two minutes to do, uh, your thank yous All right, well, number one, 1UP USA. They, they're great to work with.
• 54:38
They gave us, like, a $600 rack to give away. That's awesome. Uh, yeah. Toppling Goliath gave us way too much fucking beer. Awesome. Thank you. It's amazing. Yeah. Yeah.
• 54:45
And, yeah, that is the most alcohol content I've ever received in my life. [laughs] [laughs] Which is not really a small statement, really. It, that is not a small statement, yeah. So they gave us a fuck ton of beer.
• 54:57
Um- Don't forget Your Place with the cooler to put it in. Your Place. Your Place, Your Place with the cooler to put it in. Yes, that too. Good for- Oh, yeah, that you- Beers and humans... yeah Yes, and humans. Yes.
• 55:07
You, we washed that water out at the end of the day- Cheers... and it was- It was pretty muddy, wasn't it? Yeah, it was bad looking. Sorry. [laughs] You're welcome. Yeah.
• 55:13
Grizzly Coolers, local Grizzly Coolers gave us a, you know, costs on those cups. So hopefully everybody liked the cups. I heard- Oh, they were awesome... that they're awesome. Those were fantastic. Yeah.
• 55:21
Definitely paid too much for those and didn't charge enough for the people who raced. [laughs] Eh, what do you mean? We, we're, we're razor thin on profit loss right now. Whatever. You can still get cups for $20.
• 55:31
Yes, you can. Actually, the price has risen to 25 now- 25... because it's after the event. It's a collector's item. It is now. Oh, yeah. They're worth more. Well, thanks for telling me that- I'd say it's 50...
• 55:38
after you just sold three last night for 20 bucks. I want one. Anyways, um, who else do we have? Cardboard Rabbit. [laughs] Carb- Card- [laughs] Cadboard Rabber. Mmm. Cadboard, Cadboard Rabber. With the floppy ears.
• 55:50
Cardboard Robot. Krabby Patty. [laughs] With the very small boxes. Yeah. Drunk Cyclist just for the hats. For not even- The hats were not requested... for not really existing.
• 56:00
The, the, the, the Cowboy, the Drunk Cyclist hats were not requested. Oh, those are fantastic. And there is one- And there is one in the bar... too goddamn many in the garage... right now. Huh?
• 56:08
There is one in the bar right now. Yeah. Is it being worn? On top of the cooler. Hey, it was, it was better- A drunk's like, "Where's your hat?" It was better next year. [laughs] Well, I see a hat.
• 56:16
I'm not, I'm probably sure- [laughs]... there's probably, like, a lot of drunk cyclists And of course, Decorah Unpowered Trails and all the work we did, we had a shitty fucking storm leading up to this race- Oh, yeah...
• 56:25
and we cut out so many trees. That, uh, so many trees. I gotta say, since I was not a person who helped with that, I got, I'll thank you guys. Thank you. Y'all were amazing.
• 56:32
Clearing the trails, I mean, seriously- So I guess this is my thank yous- They were-... and my you're welcomes... what was it, like, what was it like two, uh, like, two weeks before the thing? Uh, like, three weeks.
• 56:41
Three weeks? Yeah, but it took- And there were hundreds of trees that went down- Literally hundreds... in this, in this place.
• 56:46
And everybody got out there with chainsaws and heat tractors and- Dude, so, so all you assholes could have a good time. Yeah. So we did a lot of work. Man. Obviously- Not me...
• 56:57
you guys were throwing the party, Chewy for buying the beer, doing all this stuff. And Chewy's like, all the time he's like, "What do you need me to do?" I'm like, "Just keep these assholes away from me." [laughs] Yes.
• 57:06
Like, have the party at your house- [laughs]... so I can go to the work and do the administration part. That's where the, uh, that's where the- She got the hat, yo...
• 57:12
that's where the, that's where the party at my house came out. It w- it was, it was... And that was the calmest party we've had at the house yet.
• 57:17
And I'm glad because the guys that, that came over to start with was the, was the guys that w- I was afraid the most. They r- r- rented, uh, Dorothy's Cove or whatever that is over there.
• 57:27
[laughs] I'm, like, going, "Oh, no. You put those fucking clowns in that place?" So fortunately they never told anybody where they were staying. That's a lot of single speeds and a lot of doilies.
• 57:36
They- [laughs] The only thing that makes me nervous is none of the assisted living people that live next door to me have talked to me yet. [laughs] Oh. So, so I think we scared the little old ladies away.
• 57:46
Maybe their assistants will talk to you, you're fine. Yeah. But, um- I think, I think Sue would agree with me that you are an assisted living human being. [laughs] Maybe that's why her house is so close.
• 57:58
Maybe she worked a deal with her. I think she did. Hey, that's why you live there. Ooh, there's- You are in assisted living and you don't know it. [laughs] You mow their lawn for a discount.
• 58:06
Are you, like, racking up money? I'm trying to get those guys to mow my lawn. Yeah. Okay. That's something an assisted living person would say. Hey, hey lady, mow my lawn. Yeah.
• 58:14
Well, Drew keeps offering, but I'm afraid to put power tools in front of Drew. Yeah, well. There we go. Um, who else? Well, I gotta thank O'Gara. I know everybody...
• 58:23
Just talk shit if you want, but he put together most of this course, and he marked half of it while I got to mark the other half, so that was nice. Uh, you guys for registration.
• 58:31
Th- th- Your city of Decorah- City of Decorah... for approving this- Yes... event. For totally ignoring us... uh, on Monday after. Yeah. Sorry.
• 58:39
Anyways, I did have to go through Parks and Rec, and I did jump through the hoops, and I did approve everything. I did everything right as far as I know. [laughs] So- That's all that matters...
• 58:47
you know, Dixie's Beer Garden had a beer special. Thank them. Thanks to Your Place for doing the pre-registration. Uh, Haymarket for being cool. And I will say thank the Elks even though we have stuff to talk about.
• 58:58
We do. Oh. There are ongoing discussions. We have issues. Let's just say it that way. We have issues. And you two for handling the money and being professional, like, literally,
• 59:07
do you think I can trust these guys with money? No. [laughs] So I'm glad you guys stepped up and did the, did that thing. I didn't do any money either. That was all Brecca. That's on me. Oh, it's all Brecca. All me.
• 59:14
I just gave shit away and drank beer. Yeah. I mean, fair, but- I know you kicked ass at that. Yes. Right? You're really good at that. All of the ass. Absolutely. You kicked all of the ass at that. Two dots. Okay.
• 59:25
So I think that's... Is there anybody else? Anybody I forgot? Uh- All the people who came- Yes... and didn't break anything. They were amazing. Thanks to the people who came and did break something.
• 59:34
And spent money in the town and, and were cool. Hollywood DNF, he, that, he played for free. Oh, man, we forgot about the band. Fuck yeah. We gotta bring those guys up.
• 59:41
That was, that was amazing too because they're, not only do they race their, on fast and bikes, their fucking music is fantastic. Only Hollywood raced. He tried to get the others to go, but no.
• 59:51
Christine, Christine raced. No, KK hasn't raced in, like, 95 years. KK's, KK's the shit. Yeah, KK's awesome. I love that guy. I can't believe that he- Him and Palmer? Did you know that KK- Oh, you're talking Christie...
• 1:00:00
did you know that KK- Did I- No, KK and my kids used to work together. Oh, he, yeah, yeah. I'm down. That's, that, so the fact that KK can still play drums after working with my kid is beyond me.
• 1:00:08
He also does, a little known fact, KK does the best impression of former governor of Minnesota- Jesse Ventura... Jesse "The Body" Ventura. Oh, yeah. Oh, absolutely.
• 1:00:19
It, and I will, I'll do a poor impersonation of the impersonation- [laughs]... of Jesse "The Body." I was gonna say I feel like you're gonna do something. It's coming. It is coming. What you need to do- [laughs]...
• 1:00:29
is you need to legalize the brothels Oh It's, and- Did he say that? Yeah, he does, he did, he did say that, but actually KK said it way better. What about Manana? I don't know. "What you need to do is..."
• 1:00:40
I can't, I don't have the, I don't have the modulation to do it. Yeah. I appreciate the attempt. Shout out. A for effort. A for effort. Shout out to DNF. Thanks for coming down and rocking hard.
• 1:00:49
Um- Daddy's nighttime friends. Yeah. Yes. Fantastic. It was awesome. That, that, that may have scared people in this town away a little bit. Yeah. Well- It's like, what the hell was that?...
• 1:00:59
people in this town are skittish. Yeah. [laughs] No, but all the locals, everybody we talked to, Gunner built a single speed for it, and he loved it. Yep. Gunny built, Gunny built a special bike just for the race.
• 1:01:08
And he also said, "I will never ride a single speed ever again in my life." [laughs] I'm over... Gunny, Gunny's comment, "I'm over single speeding." [laughs] That was it.
• 1:01:15
Yeah, it wasn't he'll ne- "I'll never ride one again." He's like, "I am so over single speeds." [laughs] I'm sure there's somebody- And he was at the top and he parked...
• 1:01:22
I'm sure there's people out there getting it, and I apologize for that. Yeah. But it went off great, and I was...
• 1:01:27
After we agreed to do this, I was like, "That was the dumbest fucking thing to bring this to the town I have to live in." [laughs] And it actually went okay. We, like, we told everybody on the way...
• 1:01:35
So as he and I are driving back from Maine, we're going, "Do we really want to do this in the town we live in?" [laughs] And I'm like, "I, I don't know." And he's like, I go, "Well, we said Iowa. We didn't say Decorah.
• 1:01:45
We could always go someplace else," but it's like- You know what? You know what you should have taken it to is to Cresco. I was gonna say Cresco or, um, Creston.
• 1:01:53
[laughs] No, no, because then Caleb would've- No, don't take it to Wakon. They actually have hills. Take it to Cresco where it's flat as shit. [laughs] Just race around the city blocks. The corn maze.
• 1:02:00
Just right around the, right around the burnt ass down... What, what was that place that caught on fire? Oh, the Good Times. Uh, Good Times. Oh. Yeah. That's, that's very sad. Yeah. No, that's terrible. It's very sad.
• 1:02:09
It's very sad. I don't mean to make fun. Oh, and right next to Cleve's- But it would've been-...
• 1:02:13
the bar in my- And I, I'm not, again, I'm not making fun, but to ride around a place that's actively burning down would've been pretty cool. [laughs] Well, in hindsight, that would've been so cool.
• 1:02:24
But also, y'all did an amazing job planning it, and I feel like it'd be weird if you thanked yourselves, so I feel like I will just say you guys did an amazing job. Nicely done. Yeah. Spinner and Chewy- Whatever...
• 1:02:33
despite their appearance- [laughs] Oh, yeah. I should have said that... made some shit happen. [laughs] Uh, this is, this is basically, Deek's already left, and it's like this is bike racing in a box.
• 1:02:43
We've been doing this for so fucking long. It was like, I was getting nervous because he's like, I'm like, "You want- want to do this?" He's like, "Later, later." Like, like, he's...
• 1:02:51
He- Everybody's at my house drinking beer. He goes, I go, "What do you want me to do?" He goes, "Keep them here so I can go build the trophies." [laughs] This is what? This is Thursday night or Friday night.
• 1:02:59
That was Thursday. Thursday, Thursday night, yeah. He's like, "Keep them here." So I got, like, 25 people, and the best part was I sent pictures out. They go, "Why are there bikes hanging in a tree?"
• 1:03:06
Because I said, "That's about $25,000 worth of bicycles hanging in that tree right now."
• 1:03:10
[laughs] I tell you, I, I said it during the thing, but then I'll say it again, the Surly, the best idea we never did at Surly was to have the Surly race kit, which is, like, we were gonna sell this thing.
• 1:03:22
It was a, it was a paper grocery bag- [laughs]... and inside the grocery bag was 50 paper plates- [laughs]... 10000 zip ties- A Sharpie... and a Sharpie- [laughs]... and a Mead spiral bound notebook- [laughs]...
• 1:03:37
because that's all you fucking need to make one of these things happen. [laughs] You just say, "Uh, we're gonna have a thing, so come on over, and, like, here's your number plate.
• 1:03:46
Write whatever you want on it, and I'll write down whoever you are," and that's it. See all that race money you spend on all those, like- And then-... start from tape buddies... oh, man, I wish we would've did it.
• 1:03:54
And the best, the best thing is afterward- Banners and plates. Sponsors, I fucked up... it all goes into the fire.
• 1:04:00
Well, and I agree, because, because when Spinner shows me the plates, I'm going, "Those are really nice," and why? Because I was like, I'm like, "Do you need to- Come back...
• 1:04:06
I said, "Do you need me to go buy paper plates to, like, make arrows?" He goes, "Well, we can do it with the others." I said, "Well, you know what we want to do for arrows? Ears of corn."
• 1:04:13
We're gonna, we're gonna lacquer ears of corn- Yeah... and then point them. [laughs] Oh, my God. [laughs] That would've been great. And a lot of work. Oh, it's just- And a deer would've ate them before anybody started.
• 1:04:22
Yeah, yeah. And then right there. Yeah. No. Yeah. And I way overdid it. No, I wanted a logo. I thought... I liked my logo. I thought- Somebody's like, "There's no American flag." Your logo was fantastic.
• 1:04:29
I'm like, "It's in the middle right behind the beard." [laughs] How about a shout-out for the people that actually hauled their asses to Decorah to ride this thing? Yes. Yes. That was pretty cool. Yeah.
• 1:04:38
Y'all can't hear me, but I'm clapping. Whoop whoop. We can hear the clap. Yep. [laughs] Oh. I was just letting you felt it. Really? I was gonna say. [laughs] That's not, that's not, it's not our first time.
• 1:04:49
Just to clarify, I don't have the clap. [laughs] I was talking about Spinner. Yeah. He might. I don't think I do. I- I can hear it. Ouch. Um, we have to end this podcast because we're out of beer.
• 1:05:00
And we do have to say fuck Greg and Everyday Cycles for not showing up. Yeah. Once again, yeah. We still like you, but fuck you. Yeah. Aw. So- So sad...
• 1:05:06
so then he's like, he's, like, kind of going on about, I fu- I fucking nailed him because he goes, "So was Brunzy there?" I go, "No. Something came up with Brunzy." He goes, "Oh, another no-show."
• 1:05:14
And I'm, like, going- I had something else... "Yeah, like somebody else?" Another no-show. Fuck yeah. He's trying to build a list of no-shows.
• 1:05:18
And, and, no, he kind of, like, he kind of, he kind of like mentioned himself on the, on the side. We kind of got it in ones and those guys for not showing. I was like... Hey, here's the thing. I don't care.
• 1:05:26
Everybody that came had a great time. It's not- Yeah. No, no... What? Shit, I'm not- Whatever reason- It's not who didn't show up, it's who did... whatever reason for not showing up is your own fucking fault, right?
• 1:05:35
Right. No, we had a great time without them, and they could have been part of that great time. It's, yeah, whatever it is. Well, okay, we're gonna close this thing down because we're out of beer, right?
• 1:05:44
And nobody seems to be jumping up and running and buying beer for us. If somebody would buy us beer, we'd get the show going, so everybody stay seated. [laughs] Yes, please. Yes, please.
• 1:05:51
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for joining podcast number 22 from the Haymarket in Decorah, Iowa.
• 1:05:59
  [clapping] [outro music]
