- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Memorial Day. We're recording this today, Memorial Day. We
- 0:03Speaker 1: should be at a barbecue together.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Yeah, we should be eating ribs. We should be Wait,
- 0:09Speaker 2: are you really trying wait, hold on, let me get
- 0:11Speaker 2: this straight going. Are you really trying not to eat
- 0:13Speaker 2: meat nowadays?
- 0:14Speaker 1: I am a pescatarian. I'm trying that out.
- 0:17Speaker 2: When did you become a pescatarian?
- 0:20Speaker 1: I watched this documentary that really got me inspired about
- 0:24Speaker 1: stopping eating animals besides fish.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You sound like my dad. My dad is the same
- 0:30Speaker 2: way right now.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The documentary was it's called the Game Changers. Is that
- 0:35Speaker 1: what it's called? Yes, game changers. So, but I've never
- 0:39Speaker 1: done anything. I love burgers, I love I love all
- 0:41Speaker 1: the shit we all have eaten our whole lives. But
- 0:44Speaker 1: we have all this time on our hands, right, it's
- 0:46Speaker 1: like an experimentation time on every front, right, Like you
- 0:49Speaker 1: can experiment with you know, I've been experimenting with all
- 0:53Speaker 1: sorts of things in my life. Is I'm sure a
- 0:55Speaker 1: lot of people have. And one was like, okay, well
- 0:56Speaker 1: let me just try this this during this time to
- 0:59Speaker 1: only be a fitter. And I do feel better, I
- 1:02Speaker 1: do feel healthier.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Well that's great, but I know you're I.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Know you're very meat passionate.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Donald.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You know, I'm trying to stay away from the red meat.
- 1:11Speaker 2: That's the hardest thing to stay away from. It's so tasty.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So I've been trying to figure out different ways to
- 1:17Speaker 2: cook a chicken, and I've been doing that a lot lately.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But yeah, you're right. I do agree that too much
- 1:25Speaker 2: meat is bad for you, obviously, because you know, cholesterol
- 1:29Speaker 2: says something about that, blood pressure says something about that,
- 1:32Speaker 2: heart disease, colorectal cancer says a lot about that, you
- 1:37Speaker 2: know what I mean, And that's when you eat too
- 1:39Speaker 2: much red meat, usually or processed foods. I'm having a
- 1:42Speaker 2: hard time getting off of all of that stuff though.
- 1:44Speaker 3: That's the problem.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I I gotta tell you. Last night we had a
- 1:49Speaker 1: fake burger.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You had Beyond Burger.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It wasn't one of the fancy ones. Beyond It wasn't
- 1:54Speaker 1: Beyond it impossible. It was the only two names I know,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and we just got it at a supermarket. It was
- 1:59Speaker 1: a nice brand. I forgot the brand, but it was amazing.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I mean, once you put cheese on it and all
- 2:06Speaker 1: the fixens and your spices, it's great.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But once you put the cheese on it. You're no
- 2:10Speaker 2: longer presbytarian whatever it is that you're trescutarian.
- 2:13Speaker 1: That's yeah, I'm I can eat cheese. I'm just not
- 2:15Speaker 1: eating I'm not eating meat. I'm not eating I'm not
- 2:19Speaker 1: eating any form of meat other than fish.
- 2:21Speaker 2: All right, well should we sing?
- 2:24Speaker 1: You don't seem happy. I want you to get happy.
- 2:26Speaker 1: You seem very dumb. You can't sing unless you're happy.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Donald very old song, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 2:31Speaker 1: You just you have a furrowed brow.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I am very happy. First of all.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Well, okay, well, let's let me see it. We're about
- 2:38Speaker 1: to bring on Randall Winston, one of the most exciting people.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I'm really excited, but I don't want him.
- 2:43Speaker 1: To see you. Better turn that motherfucking bearded frown upside down.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I'm telling you something right now. Randall Winston is responsible
- 2:49Speaker 2: for some of the most happiest moments of my life.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So I can't wait to have him on.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Okay, well, then count these motherfuckers in.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Five, six, seven, eight. Motherfucker's here some stories I'm not show.
- 3:01Speaker 1: We made about a bunch of tops and nurses.
- 3:07Speaker 2: He said he's a stormy so YadA around you here,
- 3:15Speaker 2: YadA around here, No.
- 3:27Speaker 1: There he is. Why is he wearing like a gaming headset?
- 3:34Speaker 3: That's the only headset I can find.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Oh my god, you're so inorgle.
- 3:37Speaker 2: You can play an Xbox later, buddy.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Did we interrupt you from call of duty? Or are
- 3:44Speaker 1: you flying atop? Are you flying a chopper anytime soon?
- 3:48Speaker 2: We Oh my god, we're so excited to have you
- 3:54Speaker 2: on the show. Yeah, we hear you.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Just awesome. Yes, these are this is my son's gaming
- 3:58Speaker 3: heads I knew it.
- 4:00Speaker 1: By the way, this is gonna be I wish the
- 4:02Speaker 1: audience could see Randel is wearing a gaming headset. But
- 4:05Speaker 1: if you don't play games, picture a helicopter headset and
- 4:10Speaker 1: he's in his beautiful garden and he's wearing his kids
- 4:14Speaker 1: gaming indset.
- 4:15Speaker 2: That literally is it? Literally is a game?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Lights up?
- 4:19Speaker 2: I love it. I love it.
- 4:21Speaker 3: How are you man?
- 4:22Speaker 1: How are you? Randy?
- 4:23Speaker 3: I am fantastic. I mean, of things considered, I'm great.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know, congratulations on your pickup.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yes we did.
- 4:32Speaker 2: We didn't get picked up Randall, but.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I didn't know you didn't get picked up. I'm sorry.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It's all good. ABC decided not to go further with emergents,
- 4:42Speaker 2: but better News. ABC decided to go further with Mixed Dish,
- 4:47Speaker 2: which is Randall's show. Now, let me get this straight. Randal,
- 4:50Speaker 2: you're executive producer on the show.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Now that is correct.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Look at you man started.
- 4:56Speaker 1: At a rand We gotta go back because Randall's career
- 4:59Speaker 1: is on and I think if for people that want
- 5:02Speaker 1: to go into Hollywood, Randall is a really exciting case
- 5:06Speaker 1: of someone that's on Fuego right now.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Well not only is Antuego. I remember a video. I
- 5:11Speaker 2: don't know how I saw this video, but it was
- 5:13Speaker 2: a video of you pretty much manifesting your destiny, you
- 5:17Speaker 2: know what I mean, saying this is what I want
- 5:19Speaker 2: to do. I want to move to Hollywood. I want
- 5:21Speaker 2: to be a I want to be a big time producer.
- 5:24Speaker 2: And you know, and you're very young in this video too.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I don't know how I saw this video.
- 5:31Speaker 3: It was it was posted by a friend of mine.
- 5:34Speaker 3: It was we were like it was our twenty first
- 5:37Speaker 3: birthday or something like that. This is a girl who
- 5:40Speaker 3: I met on the journey to Los Angeles. We met
- 5:44Speaker 3: at a rest stop in Oklahoma and became life for friends.
- 5:47Speaker 3: We are on our way to come find our dreams
- 5:50Speaker 3: and she was very into documenting everything, and Donald, I
- 5:54Speaker 3: can't believe you saw that. That's that's crazy.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Donald and I are very into well, I don't know, Donald,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I think you are, but I'm very pro right now
- 6:02Speaker 1: manifesting your shit and making everything happen. My friend, our friend,
- 6:06Speaker 1: Amanda is missed like whiteboard and writing everything down. And
- 6:10Speaker 1: actually I became friendly with John Legend's manager. I think
- 6:14Speaker 1: I've told you this story, Donald, who said that everything
- 6:16Speaker 1: that John Legend has accomplished they put on a whiteboard
- 6:19Speaker 1: when they were kids, like out of college, and they
- 6:22Speaker 1: were like writing down, like they were laughing, like I
- 6:25Speaker 1: don't know this many Grammys and cover a Time magazine
- 6:28Speaker 1: and they were just like cracking each other up. And
- 6:30Speaker 1: She's like, every single thing we put on that whiteboard happened.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, John Legend got an egot.
- 6:36Speaker 1: He's got well, Randall's gonna get a fucking egot, especially
- 6:40Speaker 1: for his acting skills.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Oh boy, here we go.
- 6:42Speaker 1: No, we had to get into it because Donald called
- 6:45Speaker 1: me out to Randall saying that I dissed his work
- 6:48Speaker 1: as Death in the show, and Randall texted me very
- 6:52Speaker 1: upset about his work is Death being criticized?
- 6:58Speaker 3: I mean, I think I played the part that was
- 7:00Speaker 3: required of death. And I also you know, death is
- 7:07Speaker 3: not the only role that they played on Scrubs, you know.
- 7:09Speaker 2: No, you also well, we haven't gotten to the to
- 7:11Speaker 2: the security guard yet. He hasn't been introduced yet, the
- 7:14Speaker 2: hook the hook handed security guard.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Oh, I forgot that you were the hook handed security guard.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Leonard who had Leonard, who had tens of fans?
- 7:28Speaker 1: Randall, how many episodes did Leonard do?
- 7:30Speaker 3: Do you think? I don't know exactly how many episodes
- 7:34Speaker 3: he did, but I will tell you this, all fans
- 7:37Speaker 3: that wrote to me, so many people from Men's prison
- 7:41Speaker 3: got some sort of treat assigned script or something from Scrubs.
- 7:46Speaker 2: So you were you weren't able to you weren't you
- 7:48Speaker 2: were able to do it and not get carpor tunnel,
- 7:51Speaker 2: is what you're saying, because there's only like tens of them.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Exactly would you really give fan mail?
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, I got like.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Leonard, not a lot, but you got more fam mail
- 8:05Speaker 1: Leonard or death.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Leonard? For sure.
- 8:11Speaker 2: All right, let's go back to the beginning.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Yes, let's start at the very beginning.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I tried to do that with you manifesting your destiny,
- 8:19Speaker 2: but at some point things changed for you, Like you
- 8:22Speaker 2: lived in New York for a little bit and then
- 8:24Speaker 2: you moved to Los Angeles. Can you just tell us
- 8:26Speaker 2: how it all started and how you got connected with Bill,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and how this became and how this all trans sent
- 8:33Speaker 2: it into scrubs.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Yes, the truth is Bill and I met socially first.
- 8:40Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, on scrubs. We kept a
- 8:43Speaker 3: graduation photo in Turk and JD's apartment and told everybody
- 8:47Speaker 3: that was our graduation picture. But we really we met
- 8:52Speaker 3: on the basketball court. I had an I had an
- 8:54Speaker 3: old room, so I had I had driven out from
- 8:58Speaker 3: the Midwest, you know, I trying to try to find
- 9:01Speaker 3: my dream, got to Los Angeles, snuck onto all the
- 9:05Speaker 3: lots in town, got myself a job, and I started
- 9:10Speaker 3: creating my circle, you know, your chosen family, your LA family,
- 9:14Speaker 3: and a guy who was my best friend, who I
- 9:19Speaker 3: lived with, a guy named Greg Malon's who went on
- 9:21Speaker 3: to run friends, and how I met your mother, and
- 9:24Speaker 3: a bunch of other stuff. He and Bill had this
- 9:28Speaker 3: played in this Saturday game and invited me to play
- 9:32Speaker 3: a few times. And that's how that was how I
- 9:36Speaker 3: originally met Bill. I went from working for a guy
- 9:42Speaker 3: named Gary Dave Goldberg. That was my very first job.
- 9:46Speaker 3: He's the guy who created Family Ties. Yeah. He was amazing.
- 9:50Speaker 3: He was an amazing mentor and he had taken Bill
- 9:53Speaker 3: under his wing. So Gary is in some ways the
- 9:58Speaker 3: reason that we started working together. And the first show
- 10:00Speaker 3: we did together was a show called Champs. That was
- 10:04Speaker 3: the first show we did together, and Kevin Neelan was
- 10:07Speaker 3: in it, and it was it was DreamWork's very first
- 10:11Speaker 3: TV show, So.
- 10:13Speaker 2: That kind of okay. Just to so Kevin Nielan, who
- 10:17Speaker 2: Zach remembers being at the first party we ever had
- 10:22Speaker 2: in our scrubs up. That's why Kevin Nielan was there, Zach.
- 10:26Speaker 2: He wasn't there because he was a fan of the show.
- 10:28Speaker 2: He was there because he worked with Bill and Randall.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Okay, well he may have been a coincidence, but okay,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I'll hear you.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Okay, Randal V.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Froze, are you still there? Oh boy?
- 10:41Speaker 2: And that was when we lost random.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Oh god, what are you drinking there?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Mamosa Little Mimosa.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Memorial Day, Yeah, buddy. The think about Memorial Day is
- 10:51Speaker 1: it's just another weekday that you can rationalize. It's okay
- 10:54Speaker 1: to drink early. Yeah, in this day and age, it
- 10:58Speaker 1: doesn't feel any different. My girlfriend was it's Memorial Day.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I'm like, how is that going to be different from
- 11:03Speaker 1: any other day that we're living in hibernation right now?
- 11:06Speaker 1: What a kid can drink?
- 11:08Speaker 2: Yeah, the kids don't have to get on zoom today.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Okay, I guess if you have kids, they don't have
- 11:11Speaker 1: to get on their zoom things.
- 11:13Speaker 2: But but today is a is a day where you know,
- 11:17Speaker 2: my wife looked at me and it was like, you're drinking already.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And I was like, it's.
- 11:20Speaker 1: A Memorial day.
- 11:23Speaker 2: It's a Memorial Day.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So did she then join you?
- 11:26Speaker 3: No? She did not.
- 11:27Speaker 2: She was like, you're an alcoholic.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I was like, oh shit, be like, baby, it's a
- 11:31Speaker 1: Memorial Day.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And on that note, I'm going upstairs to do my podcast.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Okay.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Randall says he's resetting the Wi Fi. Oh god, that's
- 11:42Speaker 2: that's that's unfortunate.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You know, we lost all the momentum of blowing this
- 11:45Speaker 1: guy up. We're gonna have to regenerate it.
- 11:47Speaker 2: We're gonna have to regenerate it.
- 11:48Speaker 1: We're gonna have to regenerate our Randall blow up.
- 11:51Speaker 2: He said, fucking spectrum.
- 11:56Speaker 4: I just had my dad switch off of Spectrum for
- 11:58Speaker 4: the same reason that ship is do do.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Trum is bad Dan, you don't support No, guys, I
- 12:03Speaker 1: want you to listen. This is a very very technical
- 12:05Speaker 1: man here and he's saying fuck Spectrum. So if you're
- 12:08Speaker 1: choosing a provider, listen to Dan. The only way.
- 12:12Speaker 4: That I found that you get good internet service is
- 12:14Speaker 4: if you just switched from provider to provider every year
- 12:17Speaker 4: or so. Because they don't reward loyalty. There's no like
- 12:20Speaker 4: your bill is reduced, your service is better. It just
- 12:22Speaker 4: gets worse and worse and worse, and they want to
- 12:24Speaker 4: keep getting new customers. So I have gigabit Internet a
- 12:27Speaker 4: thousand megabytes up and down for seventy five bucks a month,
- 12:30Speaker 4: which is the cheapest Internet I've ever had.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And it's just because I switched.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I got What are you using now, Dan? AT and
- 12:38Speaker 1: T and T? All right, Well, guys, you're hearing it
- 12:40Speaker 1: a year first that Dan really recommends AT and T.
- 12:44Speaker 1: It's really about you can work the companies against each
- 12:47Speaker 1: other if you're constantly quitting one and saying no, fuck off,
- 12:50Speaker 1: you suck, and then they give you a better rate.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So if you have the time, which you do now,
- 12:54Speaker 1: you two can have fancy fast internet like Dan Randall,
- 12:58Speaker 1: welcome back, blowing you up. And then you had to
- 13:02Speaker 1: do a Wi Fi problem.
- 13:04Speaker 2: All right, so let's get back into it.
- 13:05Speaker 1: So you let's just jumped to in the spirit of time,
- 13:07Speaker 1: let's just keep this moving. You start work on Spin
- 13:10Speaker 1: City with Bill and you hit it off. You become besties.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You're partying around the city, your young men in Manhattan go.
- 13:19Speaker 3: From LA.
- 13:20Speaker 2: How did you get from LA to Manhattan? How did
- 13:22Speaker 2: that happen? Well, we're playing Donald, no doubt you man
- 13:26Speaker 2: the fight. If I could reach through this right.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Now, Uh, you know what, it goes back to basketball.
- 13:34Speaker 3: We came off to the basketball court one night playing
- 13:36Speaker 3: and uh, Gary and Bill pulled me aside and they said,
- 13:41Speaker 3: you know, we just wrote this pilot.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Uh.
- 13:43Speaker 3: We sent it to uh. We sent it to Michael J.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Fox and they said, there's a character. The mayor is
- 13:50Speaker 3: named after you. I think your mother would be very proud.
- 13:52Speaker 3: So had Mayor Randall Winston and uhlaid by the Great
- 13:57Speaker 3: Barry box work and with the show Gut. We did
- 13:59Speaker 3: the pilot in LA, but Michael was living in New
- 14:03Speaker 3: York and said he would only do this series if
- 14:04Speaker 3: we took it to New York. So that was the
- 14:08Speaker 3: opportunity of a lifetime, you know, change my life. I
- 14:10Speaker 3: got the chance to go to New York. Garry took
- 14:13Speaker 3: a select group of people and Donald you know Sebastians.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Do you guys know Sebastian gents.
- 14:18Speaker 2: We moved.
- 14:19Speaker 3: We all went to New York with all excitement, like
- 14:25Speaker 3: nobody was over anything. Everybody just was into going to
- 14:28Speaker 3: the city. You were, How old were you I was?
- 14:34Speaker 3: I think I was twenty nine. I think I turned
- 14:36Speaker 3: thirty that year. But Bill was. Bill's like a year
- 14:42Speaker 3: younger than me, and he had like the first American
- 14:46Speaker 3: Express black card and he would say, you know, randall
- 14:48Speaker 3: go out and find us in after hours every Friday.
- 14:51Speaker 3: So we were there'd be lines at these after ours
- 14:54Speaker 3: clubs and they're like, you know, absolutely, we don't have
- 14:56Speaker 3: any room. I'd be like, you got room now, motherfucker.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Now Now I say, I say, I need two cases
- 15:03Speaker 3: of champagne and a private room. And that was just
- 15:06Speaker 3: the beginning.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Right now. I got to tell you something. Some of
- 15:10Speaker 2: my favorite moments, some of the best moments of my
- 15:13Speaker 2: life I've shared with you. Rend you have been present
- 15:16Speaker 2: at some of the most special moments, some of the
- 15:20Speaker 2: most wildest moments, some of the craziest moments of my
- 15:24Speaker 2: life have been with you there.
- 15:27Speaker 3: I love that.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Everything, everything from partying in Vegas to marrying him and
- 15:32Speaker 1: his wife and everything in between. Randall has been there.
- 15:35Speaker 2: He has been there.
- 15:36Speaker 1: How many people have you married, Randall?
- 15:39Speaker 3: U seventeen successful couples? Donald? What I said? I said,
- 15:44Speaker 3: you gotta be serious, because everybody I marry stays together? Right?
- 15:48Speaker 2: How many? How many people have gotten divorced?
- 15:51Speaker 3: Zero?
- 15:53Speaker 1: You got a good streak.
- 15:56Speaker 3: I don't have people messing my streak up. Now.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Now, Randal, if I'm listening to this, I was preparing
- 16:04Speaker 1: for this, and I thought, if I'm listening to this
- 16:05Speaker 1: and I'm interested in production, but I don't know anything
- 16:08Speaker 1: about it. I see in the credits all the time
- 16:10Speaker 1: a line producer, but I see exec producer, I see
- 16:13Speaker 1: associate producer. I see all these titles. Could you explain
- 16:16Speaker 1: to people that I have nothing to do with the
- 16:17Speaker 1: business what a line producer does?
- 16:20Speaker 3: Yes, yes, it is. It's true that the TV credits
- 16:23Speaker 3: are lousy with producers, and usually if the credit is
- 16:28Speaker 3: line producer or produced by that credit is reserved for
- 16:34Speaker 3: the person who is essentially responsible for keeping the train
- 16:38Speaker 3: running on time, making sure that you've got the right
- 16:41Speaker 3: group people in the right place, making sure that the
- 16:44Speaker 3: show is on budget, that it is getting delivered on time,
- 16:49Speaker 3: not just within the time constricts of your time slot,
- 16:51Speaker 3: but delivered the day that it's supposed to be delivered,
- 16:54Speaker 3: you know, sort of soup to nuts. That it starts
- 16:58Speaker 3: with the prep which is, as it sounds, the preparing
- 17:01Speaker 3: of the show. When you first get a little bit
- 17:03Speaker 3: of information about the about the series and each episode, you know,
- 17:07Speaker 3: you start to break it down with your team. You know,
- 17:10Speaker 3: how many actors are we going to need, do we
- 17:11Speaker 3: need to build sets? Are we going out anywhere? And
- 17:14Speaker 3: what is it going to take? And I think that
- 17:18Speaker 3: job at its best is a negotiator and a translator.
- 17:22Speaker 3: You know, that's somebody who you know, oftentimes it was
- 17:26Speaker 3: between I'm working between Bill on scrubs, between Bill who
- 17:32Speaker 3: created the show, and the studio and the network. So
- 17:35Speaker 3: everybody's getting what they need and even when they're not
- 17:40Speaker 3: speaking the same language, or figure out what the best
- 17:44Speaker 3: thing to accomplish what's in the script is can be
- 17:49Speaker 3: accomplished within the box that's been built.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and the line bruisers. Also, if you think about it,
- 17:55Speaker 1: the keeper of the purse in a sense that when
- 17:58Speaker 1: you're directing or show running, you will often think, oh,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think we should I wrote this big scene. It'd
- 18:04Speaker 1: be great to shoot it in this amazing restaurant. And
- 18:06Speaker 1: then I want to get a crane outside that's gonna
- 18:08Speaker 1: come down here. And then it'd be cool if it
- 18:10Speaker 1: was raining outside. And this is when the line producer
- 18:14Speaker 1: starts to sweat, when we start to go, wait, we
- 18:16Speaker 1: need rain, need rain.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Every every time. Every time Zach got a directing assignment,
- 18:22Speaker 3: before there was even a script, he could come here and.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Say, I need a crane exactly exactly. I don't even
- 18:28Speaker 1: know what the fucking script says, but I'm gonna need
- 18:29Speaker 1: a big ass craan. But so it's the line producer's job,
- 18:33Speaker 1: almost like a parent, to be like, look, you use
- 18:35Speaker 1: the dollar and you got your candy bar. You should
- 18:38Speaker 1: have saved it and you could have gotten ice.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Cream, yes, right, you could have. You could have you
- 18:43Speaker 3: could have one big thing or two little things.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Right right. And a lot of times it's negotiation, like
- 18:48Speaker 1: you like, hey, you know the keeper of the money.
- 18:51Speaker 1: But in terms of the money, it's not just the
- 18:52Speaker 1: camera gear, but how many crew, how many extras are
- 18:55Speaker 1: you're gonna be able to afford, Are you gonna be
- 18:57Speaker 1: able to do any overtime? All of that as all
- 19:00Speaker 1: the relationship I often have with the line producer. As
- 19:02Speaker 1: they say it, think of it like a Chinese food menu,
- 19:05Speaker 1: in that you're choosing from a myriad of things that
- 19:08Speaker 1: you can have, but you can't exceed that budget. So
- 19:11Speaker 1: if you do want a big ass crane, then maybe
- 19:13Speaker 1: you can't have as many background at the wedding.
- 19:17Speaker 3: It's so funny that you say that. I, oftentimes it
- 19:20Speaker 3: crossed my career have literally made a Chinese menu for
- 19:23Speaker 3: directors and producers, you know, because you inevitably get to
- 19:27Speaker 3: a point and Bill and I used to have, you
- 19:29Speaker 3: know something back then it was it was like the
- 19:33Speaker 3: thousand dollars deal, which was once we had locked the budget,
- 19:38Speaker 3: he was not allowed to bring me any problems that
- 19:40Speaker 3: cost more than one thousand dollars. Like I could figure
- 19:43Speaker 3: it out, you know, if it was a thousand or under.
- 19:45Speaker 3: But you know, you can't be adding stuff once we're
- 19:49Speaker 3: once we started rolling.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Now on screen. Back in the day, we would do
- 19:52Speaker 1: a lot of overtime, which which now people don't really
- 19:55Speaker 1: do anymore, right, I mean, on your jobs now, are
- 19:58Speaker 1: people pretty much keeping it to twelve hours these days?
- 20:01Speaker 3: It depends, really, I mean for the for the most part, yes,
- 20:04Speaker 3: but a lot has changed. You know, we did for
- 20:06Speaker 3: a big chunk of that show a true single camera show,
- 20:09Speaker 3: which is almost all shows have more than one camera
- 20:12Speaker 3: rolling at the time now, so you can get more
- 20:14Speaker 3: work done within the hours you can get you know,
- 20:17Speaker 3: for those who do people you know that just between
- 20:20Speaker 3: single and multi like usually on the single camera show,
- 20:23Speaker 3: you're getting one angle at a time, shooting one actors
- 20:25Speaker 3: close up, and then you turn around and get the
- 20:27Speaker 3: other actor, and the more actors in a scene, you know,
- 20:29Speaker 3: the more times you're turning, And if you have multiple cameras,
- 20:33Speaker 3: then you can get multiple shots. But on a show
- 20:37Speaker 3: like Mixed Dish, you know, or you know, American Housewife
- 20:42Speaker 3: or any show that's got a family, you know, family
- 20:44Speaker 3: show as opposed to community, you're up against kid hours.
- 20:47Speaker 3: So those shows in particular are held to a bricter standard.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Powers I'm gonna be honest with you, I love it
- 20:52Speaker 2: when kids are on the show now and you're working
- 20:54Speaker 2: the show because you're not going past twelve hours. Dude,
- 20:57Speaker 2: you might not even do eight hours that day, you
- 20:59Speaker 2: know what I mean? I mean, I love it. I
- 21:02Speaker 2: love so I did Emergence this uh this last year.
- 21:05Speaker 2: It didn't get picked up ABC. Thank you.
- 21:07Speaker 3: You were great in it.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Donald, by the way, you were great in that show.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I think we should pour some out for emergence emergents.
- 21:15Speaker 2: But I remember we had two very young ladies on
- 21:18Speaker 2: the show and they were in school, and once they
- 21:21Speaker 2: showed up to set, we had the clock was ticking.
- 21:24Speaker 2: We had eight hours to get them done or they
- 21:26Speaker 2: would they turned into a pumpkin.
- 21:28Speaker 3: And so.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I used to love that. It would be like, are
- 21:34Speaker 2: the kids working today? And they'd be like yeah, And
- 21:35Speaker 2: I'd be like, great. That means I'm done before you know,
- 21:38Speaker 2: I'm done before the sun goes down. Is when the
- 21:40Speaker 2: kids weren't working that you were like, oh my god,
- 21:42Speaker 2: I'm gonna be here forever.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Will random you.
- 21:45Speaker 3: See kids on there? You can make it right? Yeah?
- 21:47Speaker 2: Right, You'd be like, I can make that eight o'clock
- 21:49Speaker 2: movie tonight.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Randall, you and I always got along so well. You know,
- 21:53Speaker 1: sometimes the relationship between a director and a line prosher
- 21:57Speaker 1: could be contentious because the director feels like, oh taking away,
- 22:00Speaker 1: you're not you're not working with me, you're not making it,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you're not helping me realize all the things I want
- 22:05Speaker 1: to do. Of course, the line producer has a stressful job.
- 22:07Speaker 1: You're like, dude, you're killing me. You're so over budget,
- 22:09Speaker 1: what the hell are you talking about. But but when
- 22:11Speaker 1: the two are friends and they feel like, hey, let's
- 22:14Speaker 1: work it out, then it then then it never gets contentious.
- 22:16Speaker 1: But of course sometimes when people don't get along, the
- 22:19Speaker 1: line producer and the director don't always like each other.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Well, I think that, uh it has been to the
- 22:26Speaker 3: great benefit of my career in general. Part of it
- 22:28Speaker 3: is just I think the way that I like to
- 22:30Speaker 3: work is that the goal is to be symbiotic. Like
- 22:33Speaker 3: you know, when people think that it's contentious, it is contentious,
- 22:36Speaker 3: but you know, we're all rowing in the same direction.
- 22:38Speaker 3: You want, you want a great show, you want and
- 22:40Speaker 3: comedies in particular, you know, like I think about the episode,
- 22:44Speaker 3: not that the episode of Talk About Day, but your
- 22:47Speaker 3: episode when you when you go into the puddle and
- 22:51Speaker 3: you see, uh.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Se monster, do you see a sea monster? It was
- 22:58Speaker 1: not a sea monster rand named Julian.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Julian.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I love that you said sea monsters. What was the
- 23:07Speaker 1: sea monster's name?
- 23:10Speaker 3: So that's a perfect example of that script had so
- 23:15Speaker 3: much in it. But that was the biggest joke in
- 23:18Speaker 3: the show. And you know, we had to call the
- 23:21Speaker 3: city and get Diggler and it was the first time
- 23:23Speaker 3: I got to use a Jack Cameron and we're like
- 23:25Speaker 3: digging holes in the parking lot and creating a swimming
- 23:28Speaker 3: pool that we're gonna have to fill in. But but
- 23:31Speaker 3: the question was, you know, is this one of the
- 23:34Speaker 3: funniest things in the script. What are we what are
- 23:36Speaker 3: we gonna give up or combined so that we can
- 23:39Speaker 3: keep that and that trusting relationship, you know, with with
- 23:44Speaker 3: with the actor, with the director, with the writers, you know,
- 23:47Speaker 3: builds that thing that you're talking.
- 23:49Speaker 1: And Renald, you're the kind of person that was like
- 23:51Speaker 1: so on board. You'd be like, oh my god, we
- 23:53Speaker 1: have to figure out we have to figure out a way.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I know because I think that I think that gag,
- 23:58Speaker 1: which involved building two different small swimming pools to code
- 24:02Speaker 1: because the city was not gonna let anyone not do
- 24:04Speaker 1: it to code, was one of the most expensive gags
- 24:06Speaker 1: and Scrubs history.
- 24:07Speaker 3: As I recall, yes it was, Yes it was very expensive.
- 24:12Speaker 2: But that's you're right, Zach. That's a very important point.
- 24:16Speaker 2: If you have a line producer who's game, and it's
- 24:19Speaker 2: like I can figure this out. If you work with me,
- 24:23Speaker 2: we can figure this out. You're gonna get some of
- 24:25Speaker 2: the best stuff, you know what I mean?
- 24:26Speaker 1: Of course, of course I was so worried about Randall
- 24:28Speaker 1: was he wasn't you know some of these guys and
- 24:30Speaker 1: gals are sitting in office and they're rolling your eyes
- 24:32Speaker 1: when you walk in. Randon was out there with the jackhammer,
- 24:34Speaker 1: being like, I can't believe o're building to.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Totally true?
- 24:46Speaker 2: All right, should we get into the episode.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Let's get into the episode. So Randal, this one is supersized.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Let's talk about that. Very rare. Most episodes thus far
- 24:55Speaker 1: in the show are been twenty two minutes without commercials.
- 24:58Speaker 1: This one is twenty eight, which is a bit big
- 25:00Speaker 1: leap to supersize.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Right, It was a big It was a big issue
- 25:03Speaker 3: at the time, this show with the pizza clock as
- 25:07Speaker 3: we as we called it. But the network was very
- 25:11Speaker 3: contemptous about this episode and they did not rerun it again.
- 25:14Speaker 3: In certainly not that season, and I don't think for
- 25:18Speaker 3: years because being supersized and it's a it's a very
- 25:24Speaker 3: thoughtful episode, you know, very emotional goes inside where are
- 25:28Speaker 3: where the characters are? And I think at the time,
- 25:31Speaker 3: you know, we were still in season one and they
- 25:33Speaker 3: wanted it to just to be you know, more JD falling.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, they were like, what are you doing this
- 25:40Speaker 1: weird documentary style interludes? I mean, where's JD running into
- 25:43Speaker 1: a wall? And you know, but it's a great episode.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I just want to say. Written by Gabrielle Allen and
- 25:50Speaker 1: directed by Lawrence Trilling, who became one of our favorites
- 25:55Speaker 1: early on. He then went on to do Pushing Daisies
- 25:58Speaker 1: and Parenthood and I just googled now that he's on Goliath.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But super talented guy.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I think Lawrence Trilling and I did Felicity together.
- 26:07Speaker 1: You did? You did? He did? Were we ever on Alias? Done?
- 26:11Speaker 3: No?
- 26:11Speaker 2: I was never on Alias?
- 26:12Speaker 1: Okay, well he also did Alias, but yeah, he directed
- 26:15Speaker 1: Young Donald Faison and Felicity.
- 26:17Speaker 3: He's a really great guy, really fun, good director. And
- 26:21Speaker 3: Gabby got I love her.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Good team, great team, and and I just thought there's
- 26:28Speaker 1: a lot of style to this. So so there became
- 26:30Speaker 1: this convention a few conventions. There's the pizza clock thing
- 26:33Speaker 1: if you look down at the pizza guys, in case
- 26:36Speaker 1: you didn't notice, the idea was that it was mimicking
- 26:38Speaker 1: a clock. And so as the episode is cutting between
- 26:42Speaker 1: that one night of Satura and I in bed, and
- 26:45Speaker 1: then back to the few weeks that follow us trying
- 26:48Speaker 1: to date, whenever it cuts back the pizzas trying to
- 26:52Speaker 1: look like a clock from that night. So there's that
- 26:55Speaker 1: sort of gag, the timeline shake up, and then there's
- 26:58Speaker 1: these documentary stuff, shaky cam, grainy film, as though we're
- 27:03Speaker 1: all being interviewed for a psychologist project on why people
- 27:08Speaker 1: become doctors?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Right, all right, okay, that's that. I thought that was
- 27:13Speaker 2: the next episode, but okay.
- 27:15Speaker 1: No, that's my bed banter. And beyond that's like inter
- 27:18Speaker 1: cutting Salen I and our big epic fuck fest for
- 27:22Speaker 1: lack of a.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Better term, I gotta tell you something, man, nobod miss that.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Let's go back. Are you said the word? And now
- 27:30Speaker 2: I'm gonna now we can talk about it. I guess
- 27:32Speaker 2: I missed those days. I missed the days when it
- 27:36Speaker 2: was just sex all day, you know, before kids, when
- 27:39Speaker 2: you could just bone all day, then go out to
- 27:43Speaker 2: dinner that night and then bone some more. My wife
- 27:47Speaker 2: and I, you know what, we gotta make an appointment
- 27:49Speaker 2: now and it sucks?
- 27:51Speaker 1: Is it in your eye?
- 27:52Speaker 6: Cow?
- 27:53Speaker 2: Dude? I'll be like, it's you think it's a joke,
- 27:56Speaker 2: and a lot of stand up comics have made this joke,
- 27:58Speaker 2: but it's real. You'll be like, how about sex Thursday?
- 28:01Speaker 2: Can we do Thursday? I'm having my hair done right, No, no, no, no,
- 28:06Speaker 2: no no no. The kid's got zoom all day. I'm
- 28:08Speaker 2: gonna be exhausted by eight o'clock. There's no way. And
- 28:11Speaker 2: Ozark comes on. I gotta watch Ozark?
- 28:15Speaker 1: Okay, Well, Jason Baman, Jason Bateman is stealing your sex night.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Jason Bateman is fucking it.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Up for me right now.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Dude.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I hear the shows of the good looking Man. I
- 28:26Speaker 2: hear the shows great, but damn you, Jason Bateman. I
- 28:30Speaker 2: just wish he could get through the show already. I
- 28:32Speaker 2: just missed those days. I missed the days where it
- 28:34Speaker 2: was like and not. Granted. I love my children and
- 28:36Speaker 2: I love having them in my life, but I just
- 28:39Speaker 2: missed the days of freaking, waking up boning, going to
- 28:44Speaker 2: Hugo's to get breakfast or brunch, right, brunch, whatever it is,
- 28:51Speaker 2: coming back home and being like, well, what do you
- 28:53Speaker 2: want to do? Well, we haven't fucked in like five hours,
- 28:56Speaker 2: we might as well fuck again.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Perfect Donald, I am sitting outside looking longingly at my
- 29:04Speaker 3: blackout shutters and how will you to use them so
- 29:07Speaker 3: much more? Right? Like craik it down, black out the
- 29:10Speaker 3: bedroom and.
- 29:12Speaker 2: And do what you gotta do right them? Days is
- 29:15Speaker 2: over them? Days?
- 29:17Speaker 1: Is you guys are really doing a great ad for
- 29:19Speaker 1: having children right now?
- 29:21Speaker 2: No, you should do it. It's great, It's wonderful.
- 29:25Speaker 1: As you both drink your white claw.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Now.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Elliott has said in previous episodes that she's never had
- 29:32Speaker 1: an orgasm, and she said that she doesn't like sex.
- 29:35Speaker 1: So is JD the first person to not only bring
- 29:40Speaker 1: her to orgasm but show her the wondrous world of
- 29:43Speaker 1: epic sex days?
- 29:45Speaker 2: I'm sure you would like to think so.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I think, Yes, I'm not JD Donald, I'm Zach Braff,
- 29:51Speaker 1: but I'm character of JD. Probably was good in bed.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Well, you know, in the beginning of it all, JD
- 29:58Speaker 2: was kind of a sucker when he's like he almost
- 30:00Speaker 2: let her walk out of the house, and she was
- 30:03Speaker 2: obviously very much into JD.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Well, I don't know, dude, I disagree. I was watching
- 30:09Speaker 1: it with fresh eyes and I was thinking I couldn't
- 30:11Speaker 1: read where she was. Was she like, hey, I should go?
- 30:15Speaker 1: And then you know, you know what that's like back
- 30:17Speaker 1: in the day, you.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Do hate that shit. I hate that shit? Why to test?
- 30:21Speaker 2: Why I gotta be tested for? How come you can't
- 30:23Speaker 2: just be like, you know what? Maybe, uh if this
- 30:26Speaker 2: was a mistake. Was it a mistake though? Or did
- 30:29Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Like I remember saying to
- 30:31Speaker 2: my wife when she was my girlfriend, like, you know,
- 30:34Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know if this is if
- 30:37Speaker 2: this is working out, you know what I mean, and
- 30:39Speaker 2: her being like, you don't wait a second, this is
- 30:44Speaker 2: the best thing that's ever happened to you. What do
- 30:46Speaker 2: you mean you don't know if this is working out?
- 30:49Speaker 2: Like that was real talk. The fact that JD almost
- 30:52Speaker 2: had her out the door before he was before she
- 30:55Speaker 2: turned around and was like, yo, just say you want
- 30:57Speaker 2: me to stay and stop being a sucker, stop being
- 30:59Speaker 2: a little punk about this. Just say you want me
- 31:02Speaker 2: to stay, and I'll stay and we can go have
- 31:04Speaker 2: sex again, and then he's finally like, will you stay?
- 31:08Speaker 2: She's like, yeah, you gotta pay for that though, because
- 31:10Speaker 2: I almost will.
- 31:11Speaker 1: But don't you remember back in the day when you weren't,
- 31:13Speaker 1: when you weren't in such a long term relationship, when
- 31:16Speaker 1: something's new and you're kind of insecure about it, You're like,
- 31:19Speaker 1: did this person have as good of fun as I did?
- 31:21Speaker 1: I don't want to be the one who put I
- 31:23Speaker 1: don't want to put my one. I don't want to
- 31:24Speaker 1: be the one who puts myself out there and and
- 31:26Speaker 1: and gets dissed. Like you're you're you're in a very
- 31:29Speaker 1: vulnerable state. You're like, I kind of like this person,
- 31:31Speaker 1: do they like me?
- 31:32Speaker 3: You know?
- 31:33Speaker 2: Well, did I ja?
- 31:34Speaker 5: Do you?
- 31:34Speaker 3: The character just wasn't he in the friend zone a
- 31:36Speaker 3: couple episodes before that? Yeah?
- 31:38Speaker 2: Yeah they were. They were friend zoned. Yeah, like, uh,
- 31:41Speaker 2: maybe seven episodes before he gets friend zoned and.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Then he and then we gotta go to break. We'll
- 31:47Speaker 1: be right back with the legendary Randall Winster.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Random where instand. We're very excited.
- 32:05Speaker 1: We're very excited Randall's here. We're talking about sex. JD
- 32:08Speaker 1: and Elliott have an epic epic twenty four hours of sex.
- 32:13Speaker 1: And it seems that JD has found a way to
- 32:16Speaker 1: bring Elliott all the way to the Promised Land because
- 32:19Speaker 1: she seems to be really enjoying sex.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Well, the fact that they have it like six or
- 32:23Speaker 2: seven times is ridiculous. And she even brings up, I'm
- 32:25Speaker 2: gonna need a vagina transport.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah, she says, she said, you av giinant transport, which
- 32:28Speaker 1: is a very funny fantasy. Cutting to the guys, uh
- 32:32Speaker 1: running through.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Don't go Bucks Cooler.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Randall was that.
- 32:41Speaker 3: They should have done the song vagainaa Bucks.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Randall was vagina transplant something that anyone was worried about
- 32:47Speaker 1: getting through the sensors, because it seems pretty pretty risque
- 32:50Speaker 1: to have a vagina in a box.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yes, I remember there being like some conversation, but I
- 32:58Speaker 3: can't remember whether it was whether it was a lot
- 33:00Speaker 3: of crimps. But the great thing about Scrubs was that
- 33:03Speaker 3: there was always something else to point at, like, you know,
- 33:06Speaker 3: another red herring. I was like, well, we have a
- 33:08Speaker 3: giant in the box, but he says dick three times
- 33:11Speaker 3: two pages later, we'll get rid of that and let
- 33:13Speaker 3: us keep the giant.
- 33:14Speaker 1: So part of Randall's job was was being Bill's liaison
- 33:17Speaker 1: to the studio and being like, listen, guys, it's just
- 33:20Speaker 1: one vagina in a box. We're not gonna have vaginas
- 33:23Speaker 1: in boxes every.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Week, and and the and the great thing about about
- 33:29Speaker 3: the uh, the working with the person. There was a
- 33:34Speaker 3: woman I can't remember this if this was Sandy Christmas,
- 33:37Speaker 3: it was this Sandy Christmas. It was this very sweet
- 33:39Speaker 3: woman who used to have these conversations with so I'd
- 33:43Speaker 3: get on the phone and she'd be like, now, Randa,
- 33:45Speaker 3: I pack the vagina in the box and you know,
- 33:51Speaker 3: and then you later say, Penis you know do we
- 33:53Speaker 3: have to have all of that in the show? Yeah.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And what's funny is they'll often give you they'll often
- 33:59Speaker 1: give you a sheet of all their objections and it's
- 34:01Speaker 1: a negotiation, and then even when you get it through,
- 34:04Speaker 1: they'd be like, Okay, we're fine with the vagina in
- 34:06Speaker 1: the box, please do not show a vagina in a box.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Like even shit, You're like, really, guys, you had to
- 34:14Speaker 1: write that on the paper, like you think we were
- 34:16Speaker 1: gonna cut into a vagina on for NBC in the box.
- 34:19Speaker 3: And sometimes they say sometimes they say stuff and you're thinking,
- 34:22Speaker 3: oh damn, you're weight dirtier than I thought. Right now,
- 34:26Speaker 3: that is not what we meant. This is a true story.
- 34:31Speaker 3: We had to go into the effects visual effects and
- 34:36Speaker 3: adjust Donald scrubs in a particular scene because they thought
- 34:39Speaker 3: were seeing too much of a bob.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Oh, that is how we do, Dan, how about thunder
- 34:46Speaker 2: and we do.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Let's have some thunders.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Applause or as applause from my junk.
- 34:54Speaker 1: And then Dan, if you wouldn't mind put him?
- 34:57Speaker 3: That was I used to do a Loma at the
- 35:00Speaker 3: and most of my yes inspired me to just go
- 35:03Speaker 3: mm hmm.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Whenever Nurse Roberts couldn't be at the table, read Randa
- 35:08Speaker 1: would would play her. And his favorite part was doing.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Her speaking of speaking of Aloma. Holy cow, she's amazing
- 35:16Speaker 2: in this episode, very funny. Every one of her lines
- 35:20Speaker 2: lands hard.
- 35:21Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 35:22Speaker 2: White boys? Uh you mean it was a secret. All
- 35:26Speaker 2: of that stuff, everything that everything that she said in
- 35:29Speaker 2: this episode, I laughed out loud.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Now let's get ready into it right away, you know.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Let's you know, the janitor sees Aloma and she sees him,
- 35:39Speaker 1: and she looks at him like, get the fuck out
- 35:42Speaker 1: of my way, and Randall Bill is still hanging on
- 35:45Speaker 1: to his his his dream that the Janitor was only
- 35:49Speaker 1: seen by JD in season one, and we we are
- 35:53Speaker 1: Donald and I are detectives that are quickly proving him
- 35:55Speaker 1: wrong in every other episode.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I was. I never into that that that
- 36:01Speaker 3: he was a figment of JD's imagination.
- 36:03Speaker 2: It's mister snuffles.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I mean, and I remember he had because
- 36:09Speaker 3: there's some episodes later. I remember an episode I directed
- 36:12Speaker 3: where he has a group of henchmen played by our
- 36:14Speaker 3: grip team, you know, and they are all in it
- 36:19Speaker 3: with him.
- 36:20Speaker 2: And isn't his his side He has two sidekicks, Troy
- 36:24Speaker 2: and Randall.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Right, yeah, Randall.
- 36:27Speaker 2: I remember Randall played by Martin, played by Martin Martin.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Who was also in Oz the Great and Powerful with Me,
- 36:33Speaker 1: and he was also in Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Yes, I love that.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Let's talk about colleco Vision, which comes up at seven
- 36:42Speaker 1: twenty one. Did you have Collecovision either one of you?
- 36:45Speaker 2: I did not. My friend had calleco Vision, and I
- 36:47Speaker 2: remember colleco Vision being so awesome because the video games
- 36:50Speaker 2: looked exactly like they look in the arcade. So if
- 36:52Speaker 2: we had Donkey Kong it looked like Donkey Kong from
- 36:55Speaker 2: the Arcade. Yeah, I thought that.
- 36:56Speaker 3: Was the thing.
- 36:57Speaker 1: And you at first do you remember that game?
- 37:00Speaker 2: I don't. I don't remember the Smurf.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Well, if you are interested in video games, please go.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I'm sure on YouTube they can play you the theme
- 37:07Speaker 1: music from Smurfs on Cleacovision. And that jam was fire?
- 37:11Speaker 3: Was it?
- 37:12Speaker 7: La la la la la la la la la la.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Come on, that was the dope ship La la la
- 37:19Speaker 2: la la la la la la la la.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Ahead.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Let me, let's put it this way. If jay Z
- 37:25Speaker 2: can make a song from Hard Knock Life.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Yes, dude, do that again and I'll kick in my
- 37:30Speaker 1: beat box and we got a jam halfway there.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Hey, la la.
- 37:39Speaker 7: La la la la la la la la la la
- 37:44Speaker 7: la la la la la la la la la.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Dam And you're gonna have to line that up with
- 37:50Speaker 1: some delay, but we I think it's fire and I
- 37:52Speaker 1: think we can beat a Hard Knocked Life.
- 37:56Speaker 3: You you did me that donald On set you to
- 38:00Speaker 3: do Transformers as a dude.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Late Neil Diamond, Neil Diamond singing Transformers. I thought I
- 38:07Speaker 2: did it already, but if I haven't, if you missed
- 38:09Speaker 2: it to Transformers more than meets the eye. Keep going,
- 38:17Speaker 2: keep going, bus face the battles to destroy the evil
- 38:23Speaker 2: forces of the Decepticons.
- 38:30Speaker 1: By the meay Neil Diamonds your best impersonation. You also
- 38:32Speaker 1: do a pretty good U. I don't know how much.
- 38:36Speaker 2: My Well, you do a better version of Aaron Neville
- 38:38Speaker 2: than I do. Here mine's trash that maybe. Yeah, yours
- 38:51Speaker 2: is way better than mine, way better than mine.
- 38:53Speaker 1: There you go. That's the extent of our impressions. Coleco
- 38:55Speaker 1: Vision great game system. I felt like a baller because
- 38:58Speaker 1: I had it, and uh, you know, I remember that
- 39:01Speaker 1: control was like it was like a long rectangle and
- 39:04Speaker 1: then there was a circle.
- 39:05Speaker 2: On the bottom.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Yeah, not to be confused within television, which I didn't have.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Or in television. Wow was it in television? It was
- 39:13Speaker 2: Kalico Vision.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I start with the Atari twenty six hundred. I remember
- 39:18Speaker 1: that everybody had that. Yeah, and then there was Kalkovision.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Go ahead, Randall, I feel like the guy with the
- 39:24Speaker 1: gaming head that you weigh in.
- 39:29Speaker 3: But this makes me said one hundred years old. I
- 39:31Speaker 3: am currently doing a puzzle during COVID that is all
- 39:36Speaker 3: of the original video games Atari and like, yeah, so it's.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I need that puzzle. We we got a Van Goes
- 39:45Speaker 1: Starry Night, and we are not even getting anywhere near
- 39:47Speaker 1: to starting it. But I feel like if it was
- 39:48Speaker 1: the old game consoles, we've had it done already.
- 39:51Speaker 3: I'm sending it to you.
- 39:52Speaker 2: There's an Alf mentioned in this show ALF. I was
- 39:56Speaker 2: a huge fan of Alf.
- 39:57Speaker 1: When I too, Max Right, what do you doing out?
- 40:03Speaker 2: The puppet from out of space who loved to eat cats?
- 40:07Speaker 1: I remember being a little kid and the trailer teaser
- 40:10Speaker 1: for ALF came on and I remember being a little kid,
- 40:12Speaker 1: my first film critic going that looks so stupid. Cut
- 40:16Speaker 1: to me loving Alf, like having alf stuffed animals?
- 40:20Speaker 3: What was not to love about ALF? I visited the
- 40:23Speaker 3: ALF set, you did, I remember? Yes?
- 40:25Speaker 1: That was it raised up so they could have a
- 40:27Speaker 1: puppet teer.
- 40:28Speaker 3: Yes, And it was like it was. It wasn't at
- 40:30Speaker 3: a real stage. It was at uh An warehouse in
- 40:33Speaker 3: Culver City.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Is I Paul Max Wright, who was who played the father,
- 40:37Speaker 1: who was an accomplished theater actor and Shakespearean actor and
- 40:41Speaker 1: genius act all around, fucking hated it. I think that's
- 40:44Speaker 1: part of the lore, is that he absolutely hated doing
- 40:47Speaker 1: a puppet show.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Now did you did you watch all the Alps. We
- 40:54Speaker 3: were religious elf because.
- 40:55Speaker 1: There's episodes on Mitch. I mean, I'm not ready to
- 40:57Speaker 1: do the rewatch podcast.
- 40:58Speaker 3: But there's a very special ALF where I remember mostly
- 41:02Speaker 3: is crying. During ALF. ALF would to visit the girl
- 41:05Speaker 3: in the hospital. It was like, you know, tonight on
- 41:08Speaker 3: a very special ALF.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Do you remember when they would do you remember when
- 41:13Speaker 1: they would like back in the day, for those of
- 41:14Speaker 1: you who are too young, they when there was a
- 41:16Speaker 1: sad like on Scrubs. We had sad episodes all the time,
- 41:19Speaker 1: but on the old school sitcoms, they would always warn you,
- 41:22Speaker 1: like tonight on a very special silver Spoons, the ricker
- 41:27Speaker 1: will the ricker will kill a deer. We recommend and
- 41:31Speaker 1: they would go, we recommend parents watch with their children.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Do you remember that for sure?
- 41:35Speaker 3: But on Scrubs if it was sad, we just would
- 41:38Speaker 3: play the theme song a little.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Yeah, so there was silver Spoons when the wrecker killed
- 41:49Speaker 1: the deer. There was different strokes. When Dudley got molested
- 41:52Speaker 1: by the bike shop owner, remember that.
- 41:55Speaker 2: I do remember that, and everything happened to Dudley or Arnold.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and then I don't know what happened on ALF
- 42:01Speaker 1: but I don't know if they made the announcement. It
- 42:02Speaker 1: must have been serious.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Special episode of Alf.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Alf learns to touch himself.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Oh boy, oh boy, but you can't handle it.
- 42:14Speaker 1: I used to have an alf stuffed animal and uh, well,
- 42:17Speaker 1: never mind without that, man, it sound like I fucked
- 42:20Speaker 1: the doll. I didn't.
- 42:21Speaker 2: I just I just it did sound like you were
- 42:23Speaker 2: about to say it sounded like you were about to say, yeah,
- 42:26Speaker 2: I fucked the doll.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Did Alf have a tail?
- 42:30Speaker 2: I don't know. No, no, no, he did not.
- 42:32Speaker 3: I don't think so. Well.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Can you please look up if Alf had a tail?
- 42:34Speaker 2: Alf did not have a tail.
- 42:36Speaker 1: You're feeling really confident about that. You didn't see You
- 42:39Speaker 1: didn't see Alf's ask that much.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Okay, let's talk about how well Johnny does in this episode.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Yeah, in the monologue, in the monologue section, everybody's great.
- 42:48Speaker 1: In the Oh, Joelle, what you look? Your face lit up?
- 42:51Speaker 2: Alf does have a tail?
- 42:57Speaker 1: Donald, You fucking liar.
- 43:00Speaker 2: I just don't remember out for the long tail. List No,
- 43:03Speaker 2: it's like a dog's tail, and it only because you
- 43:06Speaker 2: can see him like he's looking out the window in
- 43:08Speaker 2: a single shot. Listen, but I want to see if
- 43:11Speaker 2: the album I barely remember episodes of Scrubs. How am
- 43:13Speaker 2: I supposed to remember Alf?
- 43:16Speaker 1: He does have a tail, so I have a memory.
- 43:19Speaker 1: I think what I was trying to say with the
- 43:20Speaker 1: stuffed animals, I used to pull Alf's tail through his
- 43:24Speaker 1: legs to make it look like it was Alb's peenis.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, all right, all right is good in
- 43:41Speaker 2: this episode?
- 43:42Speaker 1: Yes, he's not only that.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Before we do that, let's go back a little bit. Uh,
- 43:45Speaker 2: I didn't know that Kelso's actual name was Kelso Kelso.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Kelsanovitch. Yeah, well, I don't think that comes up again.
- 43:54Speaker 1: But this is the first episode where he introduces his
- 43:56Speaker 1: wife's name, Enid.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Right, And I thought that was just it's very interesting that,
- 44:01Speaker 2: you know, he changed his name to fit in to
- 44:03Speaker 2: be to sound more American. So instead of kel Sonovich,
- 44:07Speaker 2: it then became Kelso.
- 44:09Speaker 1: I think everybody did, including uh, Donald Faison and Judy
- 44:15Speaker 1: and Sarah. Everybody was great in these monologue sections. They
- 44:18Speaker 1: were Oh, it was kind of a cool. It's funny
- 44:21Speaker 1: because that documentary style became very common in shows like
- 44:23Speaker 1: the Office and and Modern Family that were doing sort
- 44:27Speaker 1: of the shaky cam documentary style was not a style
- 44:30Speaker 1: we did on Scrubs. But because of this segment, I
- 44:33Speaker 1: don't know why the interviewer was so hirky jerky with
- 44:35Speaker 1: the damn camera. I mean, put the fucking thing on
- 44:36Speaker 1: a tripod and calm down. But it was the interviewer
- 44:40Speaker 1: was making like his own shaky cam TV show. But
- 44:43Speaker 1: I thought everyone it seemed like the mandate was that
- 44:46Speaker 1: they were not going to have cuts in them and they
- 44:48Speaker 1: would all be long takes. And yeah, and I thought
- 44:50Speaker 1: everyone did a really nice job in those scenes.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Do you call it? They prepared us for that, because
- 44:55Speaker 2: the fact that I knew my lines like that was.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Very weird yourself.
- 45:01Speaker 2: I'm watching it and I'm like, they're gonna cut soon,
- 45:03Speaker 2: because there's no way I remember all of this.
- 45:06Speaker 3: We talked about it a lot, and we knew it
- 45:09Speaker 3: was gonna be one take. If I remember correctly, those
- 45:12Speaker 3: are half the monologue that we did. I mean, part
- 45:15Speaker 3: of the reason why the episode is so long is
- 45:17Speaker 3: because those chunks. And I remember Johnny C I feel
- 45:20Speaker 3: like he was disappointed because there was another long take.
- 45:25Speaker 3: You know. So even though this episode is what do
- 45:27Speaker 3: we say? Twenty four eight, twenty eight, twenty eight, I
- 45:31Speaker 3: think the editor's cut was closer to forty.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Ye, And there's a really cool section later on where
- 45:37Speaker 1: Donald and Judy are side by side and they're still
- 45:40Speaker 1: not cutting, so they were able to time out. I
- 45:42Speaker 1: don't know, was Judy in the room reading with you? Donald,
- 45:44Speaker 1: do you remember?
- 45:45Speaker 3: No?
- 45:45Speaker 2: That was it. They gave us earwigs, I think for that, because.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Earwig, for those who don't know, is a tiny ear
- 45:53Speaker 1: piece that goes in your ear that you can't see,
- 45:55Speaker 1: the camera can't see.
- 45:56Speaker 2: I remember rehearsing it with the voice track. I think
- 46:01Speaker 2: they recorded Judy first. I could be wrong, though, I
- 46:04Speaker 2: think they recorded Judy first and then I went in
- 46:09Speaker 2: after her to record.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Well, the timing of that was perfect because you you know,
- 46:12Speaker 1: you had to stall, so you were like thinking and
- 46:14Speaker 1: then you took a sip of your water and like
- 46:16Speaker 1: it totally looked natural, but it was. It was well
- 46:18Speaker 1: done by by Larry Trilling trilling Man.
- 46:21Speaker 2: That was one of the That was one of the
- 46:22Speaker 2: highlights in my notes that I wrote. You know, this
- 46:27Speaker 2: was his first episode to direct for us, and we
- 46:29Speaker 2: gave him a pretty you know, you guys gave him
- 46:32Speaker 2: a big randall and you and Bill gave him a
- 46:35Speaker 2: pretty big episode to produce. I wondered if it was
- 46:37Speaker 2: ever like, Yo, what money do I get to make
- 46:40Speaker 2: this go easier for me? You know what I mean?
- 46:43Speaker 1: Like, I'm guessing he was told that it was going
- 46:45Speaker 1: to be a long one because right Randall or was
- 46:48Speaker 1: it was decided after the fact.
- 46:51Speaker 3: It was decided after the fact. We didn't know it
- 46:53Speaker 3: was going to come out, but we knew from timing
- 46:55Speaker 3: the table read that we were up against it and
- 46:57Speaker 3: that we didn't want to make cuts in those you know,
- 47:01Speaker 3: soliloquy pieces, you know, directly to the camera. For some reason,
- 47:05Speaker 3: I feel like production wise, there was just a lot
- 47:08Speaker 3: of talk about the pizza clock, like getting the right
- 47:11Speaker 3: angle and how much pizzad it take out. And you know,
- 47:13Speaker 3: we were we were in that bedroom for so long,
- 47:16Speaker 3: which was a tight set.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and Sarah and I, you know, we were friends
- 47:21Speaker 1: and we really loved each other. But that was a
- 47:24Speaker 1: very bizarre thing to have that much fake sex all
- 47:28Speaker 1: over one set for many days on end.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Well, yeah, not just that you guys were very much
- 47:33Speaker 2: in each other's face. I was going to ask you,
- 47:36Speaker 2: you guys made out a lot in this episode. Yeah,
- 47:38Speaker 2: how awkward was that? For you.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I think it was uh, you know, you always hear
- 47:45Speaker 1: actors talking about, oh it's you know, it's all very
- 47:47Speaker 1: you know, choreographed, and it's not weird at all. It
- 47:50Speaker 1: is weird. You know, there's everyone standing around, you're making
- 47:52Speaker 1: out with your good friend. Uh, it's you know, it was.
- 47:57Speaker 1: It was bizarre. I remember being because also a lot
- 47:59Speaker 1: of most times it's like, okay, there's a quick makeout scene.
- 48:01Speaker 1: It's a TV show, you know, That's that's all it
- 48:04Speaker 1: ever is. This was like, you know, wrestling around and
- 48:07Speaker 1: groping each other and for days. So it was.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Weird face to face and not only face.
- 48:14Speaker 1: To Fanaka Donald, you gotta have Banaka. We had a
- 48:17Speaker 1: boom man named Kevin what was his last name, Randall?
- 48:21Speaker 1: Do you remember?
- 48:22Speaker 3: I can't figure it right now.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Also hires the whole crew everybody, so he should really
- 48:28Speaker 1: know Kevin's last name. But Kevin used to see that
- 48:31Speaker 1: we all used to have banaka. This is like back
- 48:33Speaker 1: in the day still that we had like spray the
- 48:35Speaker 1: aerosol banokam and uh we made a joke like, oh,
- 48:38Speaker 1: it'll be great because the boom mike's right over your head.
- 48:40Speaker 1: We're like it'd be great if there was a boom,
- 48:42Speaker 1: if there was banaka on the boom, because then we
- 48:44Speaker 1: can just reach up, pull the boom mic down and
- 48:46Speaker 1: grab it off. Next day we show up and he
- 48:48Speaker 1: had velcrowed a banaka to the end of the boom
- 48:51Speaker 1: mic not not the mic itself, the stick and poll
- 48:55Speaker 1: and Kevin santy, thank you and uh and and literally
- 48:59Speaker 1: he wasn't just a joke. He kept it up there
- 49:00Speaker 1: for like months, and whenever you need a banaka, you
- 49:03Speaker 1: just reach up, grab the boom pole, pull it off
- 49:05Speaker 1: to a spray. They'll crow it back and stick it off.
- 49:08Speaker 2: I used to go crazy with the banaka because I
- 49:10Speaker 2: felt like maybe if I spray enough in my mouth
- 49:13Speaker 2: the aarosow and the freaking mint will get me high enough.
- 49:18Speaker 1: When your weed was wearing off. So Donald, this weed
- 49:21Speaker 1: had worn off and he was on set too long.
- 49:23Speaker 1: He's like, let me try and get high on banaka.
- 49:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:25Speaker 2: I remember one day Randall came into the room. Randall,
- 49:27Speaker 2: tell me if you remember this, and you were like
- 49:29Speaker 2: Donald and we were on set and you were like, Donald,
- 49:32Speaker 2: wake up. Do I need to splash cold water in
- 49:33Speaker 2: your face and something? Wake ass up? When you high
- 49:36Speaker 2: or something no no, no, no no no no no.
- 49:44Speaker 2: But in my mind, I was like, they know, they know.
- 49:48Speaker 1: It was probably because you were taking too long to
- 49:50Speaker 1: get to set. No.
- 49:52Speaker 2: The only time I took a long time to get
- 49:54Speaker 2: to set was when Grand Theft Auto Vice City came out.
- 49:56Speaker 2: And I remember one time they were trying to get
- 49:58Speaker 2: me the set and I was on my way out
- 50:00Speaker 2: the door and Randall's pushing my door in as I'm
- 50:03Speaker 2: pulling it and I was like hi, and he was like,
- 50:07Speaker 2: get upstairs, random.
- 50:12Speaker 1: You had to be bad cop.
- 50:14Speaker 3: I had to get with the gripe. Yeah, grab people,
- 50:16Speaker 3: steer them. I remember sending a PA to your house
- 50:19Speaker 3: one time, Zach. Somebody had to climb over the fence
- 50:21Speaker 3: to get you to like wait.
- 50:23Speaker 1: It was a really bad moment. Know what happened was
- 50:25Speaker 1: the power. What had happened was the power went out.
- 50:29Speaker 1: The power went out in my in my on my
- 50:31Speaker 1: street or my neighborhood, and so the alarms didn't go off,
- 50:35Speaker 1: and and also the phones didn't work, and so I
- 50:38Speaker 1: woke up to a PA knocking on my window, and
- 50:42Speaker 1: which is the worst sight if you're an actor. It's
- 50:45Speaker 1: like the most horrible feeling. And I remember getting to
- 50:48Speaker 1: set really late and Bill looked at me and he's like, no, no,
- 50:50Speaker 1: don't worry, we'll split the fifty grand.
- 50:55Speaker 3: I think during scrubs I had a real moment of
- 50:58Speaker 3: peace about producing, which was I gave up on the
- 51:02Speaker 3: idea of everything being okay for more than five minutes
- 51:06Speaker 3: at a time, because nothing's ever always okay. It's like,
- 51:10Speaker 3: and nobody comes to my door to be like everything's great.
- 51:16Speaker 3: It's like, you know, somebody took my candy. We don't
- 51:20Speaker 3: have any film. You know, somebody's late.
- 51:22Speaker 2: Did we ever run out of film?
- 51:25Speaker 3: We came, We came close. We used a lot of
- 51:27Speaker 3: short ends one particular week because part of the reason
- 51:30Speaker 3: that we were able to fly under the radar financially,
- 51:35Speaker 3: and one of the reasons that that show was one
- 51:37Speaker 3: of the last shows to be on film is because
- 51:41Speaker 3: we shot on sixteen. We shot Super sixteen, not thirty five,
- 51:44Speaker 3: So we cut our production costs, you know, by a lot,
- 51:47Speaker 3: but we made a great print. I mean, we showed
- 51:49Speaker 3: that show on a DJA in the GGA screening room
- 51:53Speaker 3: and held up.
- 51:55Speaker 1: So yeah, those of you who don't know, this was
- 51:57Speaker 1: one of the last shows still being shot on film,
- 52:00Speaker 1: especially sixteen millimeter film. Probably at the time. Probably nothing
- 52:04Speaker 1: is right now, I would guess, unless it's like a
- 52:07Speaker 1: big budget feature on Netflix or something. But most people
- 52:11Speaker 1: don't do that anymore anyway, And it's one of the
- 52:13Speaker 1: reasons why people always ask how come there's no blu
- 52:16Speaker 1: ray and high resolution sixteen by nine version of the show.
- 52:22Speaker 1: It's because when we made it, we didn't and we
- 52:24Speaker 1: were done with it. No one anticipated all this streaming stuff,
- 52:27Speaker 1: so it was never like upres to be four K video.
- 52:31Speaker 3: Right, They didn't cut the film and then we do it,
- 52:34Speaker 3: and some of the film that we used you can't
- 52:37Speaker 3: even get anymore. A lot of the flashback scenes I think,
- 52:40Speaker 3: I think you'll see it in season one are shot
- 52:43Speaker 3: on something that was called reversal film, which was like
- 52:47Speaker 3: from the Vietnam War. It could had this look of.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why they have a specific texture, though in
- 52:53Speaker 1: fact there's different clearly a different film stock being shot
- 52:56Speaker 1: for these interview sequences, because they're very grainy and have
- 52:59Speaker 1: a different color sort of palette than the show itself.
- 53:03Speaker 2: When did we switch When did we switch over to chip?
- 53:05Speaker 2: Then when did we switch over to digital?
- 53:07Speaker 1: Because I know, did you do it in season nine.
- 53:09Speaker 1: It would only be in season nine.
- 53:11Speaker 2: I think it was before season nine, to be honest
- 53:13Speaker 2: with you.
- 53:13Speaker 3: I don't think so. I mean because because it was
- 53:17Speaker 3: talked about so much shows, because NBC had made this
- 53:19Speaker 3: mandate that everybody was going digital. But then when they
- 53:22Speaker 3: looked at our numbers, they were like, hey, keep doing
- 53:23Speaker 3: what you're doing. Like I think, I think maybe in
- 53:27Speaker 3: that season nine we went digital, Like I honestly can't
- 53:29Speaker 3: remember us the top of my head.
- 53:30Speaker 2: I remember that. I remember that that was very interesting
- 53:33Speaker 2: when you would see them changing mags or somebody getting
- 53:37Speaker 2: the film ready for the day and having to put
- 53:40Speaker 2: the film in a mag so that it could fit
- 53:43Speaker 2: on the camera and reaching into this like bag. It
- 53:47Speaker 2: looked like a bag, is what it looked like.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Well, it was a picture like a miniature camping tent
- 53:53Speaker 1: like that would fit on a desktop, and it was
- 53:55Speaker 1: blacked out so that they could put their hands in
- 53:57Speaker 1: there and not expose the film while loading them of
- 54:00Speaker 1: camera magazines.
- 54:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 54:01Speaker 2: I used to I used to be like, I remember
- 54:03Speaker 2: when we switched over to I guess it was season
- 54:06Speaker 2: nine where we switched over to CHIP and I remember
- 54:08Speaker 2: being like, this is the easiest thing in the world.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Why didn't we do this before? Like we could do
- 54:13Speaker 2: takes for days and days and days. All I remember
- 54:18Speaker 2: all my fuck ups, every time I missed a line
- 54:21Speaker 2: or forgot a line and everything like that. I remember
- 54:23Speaker 2: being like, how much how much more room do we
- 54:26Speaker 2: have on the mag before before you know what I mean,
- 54:29Speaker 2: before we're out and we have to and we have
- 54:30Speaker 2: to change the mag again.
- 54:32Speaker 1: You'd have eleven you'd have about eleven minutes on a
- 54:34Speaker 1: sixty millimeter magazine and uh and and you'd be like
- 54:37Speaker 1: trying to trying to get it, be like, how much
- 54:39Speaker 1: how much more fun we got before you roll out?
- 54:40Speaker 1: I got it? I got I got it. Let's go.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Let's don't go.
- 54:43Speaker 1: You can go forever.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Now you'd be like, don't cut, don't cut, we gotta cut,
- 54:46Speaker 2: we gotta cut. We only got like nineteen feet all right.
- 54:49Speaker 1: If I cut. When I say to Sarah, we're gonna
- 54:53Speaker 1: need a stool sample, not for medical reasons, my robot
- 54:56Speaker 1: needs food. I made that, I'm proud to say, and
- 55:01Speaker 1: Sarah cracked up at it. And it's so random and weird,
- 55:05Speaker 1: but I love it. Okay, I gotta feed my robot
- 55:09Speaker 1: yo poo, pooh.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Yeah, nobody's pooh, patient pooh, patient poof for the rover.
- 55:15Speaker 3: It all comes down to pooh.
- 55:17Speaker 1: And I laughed out loud when Sarah is seventeen oh four.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Sarah is making fun of my laugh because she's like
- 55:22Speaker 1: already over me, and she's.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Like, yeah, oh my god, that is so funny that
- 55:27Speaker 3: she does a funny impression of you, because I mean
- 55:31Speaker 3: that laugh has got a lot of genuine laughs with
- 55:35Speaker 3: the silly JD laugh all through the season. Yeah.
- 55:38Speaker 2: I feel like that's how every I think that's how
- 55:40Speaker 2: every relationship should be. What you see is what you get,
- 55:43Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Unfortunately, unfortunately what you see
- 55:47Speaker 2: and what you get sometimes you think you want it
- 55:50Speaker 2: and then eventually it makes you want to kill the
- 55:52Speaker 2: person what it turns out to, which turns out to
- 55:55Speaker 2: be with Elliott and JD. She loved the laugh in
- 55:57Speaker 2: the beginning, Oh, I love it so cute, and then
- 56:00Speaker 2: at the end of the show she's like, fuck that laugh, dude,
- 56:04Speaker 2: laugh like that again one more time, I dare you.
- 56:08Speaker 1: It's like, say what again?
- 56:09Speaker 2: Say again, motherfucker, say what one more time?
- 56:13Speaker 1: I know I hear you. Isn't that so sad? Though?
- 56:15Speaker 1: When a relationship goes sour and all the things you
- 56:17Speaker 1: thought were so adorable you now just fucking hate.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that was my life back in the day. Oh,
- 56:24Speaker 2: he's got such potential.
- 56:26Speaker 1: We have some guests here, Randall. So we have a
- 56:29Speaker 1: guest that come on the show. Randal, I know that
- 56:31Speaker 1: you don't listen to the podcast.
- 56:32Speaker 2: So Randall listens to the podcast.
- 56:35Speaker 1: He does. I don't know he does.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Yeah, he does because somebody was like, Yo, they talked
- 56:39Speaker 2: about you on the podcast the other.
- 56:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that means. That means that Randall was told by
- 56:43Speaker 1: someone and he went and listened to one.
- 56:45Speaker 2: He was like, oh, they got a podcast. Check that out.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Oh, somebody's on the podcast.
- 56:52Speaker 3: They talked his real friends. I was like, oh.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Nice, Hey, yeah, I got shut out.
- 56:57Speaker 2: All right, we're gonna go to a break and when
- 56:58Speaker 2: we come back, we'll have our guests.
- 57:07Speaker 1: So Randall, when we do the commercial breaks and the
- 57:10Speaker 1: song comes back, it doesn't have them. A lot of
- 57:13Speaker 1: a lot of our fans like to add their own.
- 57:16Speaker 1: That's part of Barbara.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Robbie.
- 57:21Speaker 1: Barbara and Robbie are twins.
- 57:26Speaker 2: One of your is a doctor.
- 57:27Speaker 1: My god, things are getting weird. You guys, two different
- 57:30Speaker 1: women have entered and they appear to be identical twins
- 57:33Speaker 1: in different parts of the world.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Where you guys call it from.
- 57:36Speaker 8: I'm calling from UK, in the UK.
- 57:42Speaker 2: And you're so you guys. Are you a doctor?
- 57:47Speaker 8: Yes I am, Yes, I am, but I'm not working yet.
- 57:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:51Speaker 8: I had some problems for coronavirus which delayed some technical issues.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Okay, okay. And then Robbie, what about you? Are you
- 58:01Speaker 2: a doctor too? No?
- 58:03Speaker 6: No, I got doited in law last February.
- 58:07Speaker 2: So you've got a lawyer and a doctor.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Your parents will be very happy, very proud. Yeah.
- 58:13Speaker 6: And last time we saw each other was at the
- 58:16Speaker 6: beginning of March when I brought Bobby to the airport
- 58:21Speaker 6: to take her flight to go to the UK and
- 58:24Speaker 6: move there.
- 58:25Speaker 3: Ah.
- 58:25Speaker 1: So you've been apart for a long time. I just
- 58:27Speaker 1: miss each other.
- 58:28Speaker 8: Yes, a lot, a lot. That's why I also asked
- 58:32Speaker 8: you to do this meeting, because I knew that it
- 58:36Speaker 8: was very important to her. It is important also for me.
- 58:39Speaker 8: But she had a very rough time, so oh well, we're.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Here to cheer her up. I'm so glad that you
- 58:44Speaker 1: called in because not only do you have the legendary
- 58:46Speaker 1: Donald Faizon here, and he's always funny. You have Randall Winston,
- 58:50Speaker 1: who was our line producer, but you may know him
- 58:53Speaker 1: as Leonard the security guard. And also he played Death.
- 58:56Speaker 1: And you know, we've gotten a lot of questions for
- 58:59Speaker 1: Death on our Instagram pages. So finally you can ask
- 59:04Speaker 1: Death any question you have.
- 59:06Speaker 6: Oh, that's wonderful, thayed.
- 59:11Speaker 2: Much Mouth from the Yeah, you did play much Mouth
- 59:15Speaker 2: from Freaking the Fat Out Jump.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Yes, three different you had three different parts.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Rand you had that big ass helmet on your head too.
- 59:26Speaker 2: All right, so let's get it.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Go ahead, ladies, ask a question.
- 59:29Speaker 6: I would like to start it because I am in
- 59:31Speaker 6: a theater company as well, so sometimes we argue about
- 59:36Speaker 6: the best ways to perform. You know, when you have
- 59:40Speaker 6: to feel in character and you have to feel what
- 59:46Speaker 6: your character is feeling in order to act. So I
- 59:50Speaker 6: was wondering whether sometimes you had some difficulties with that
- 59:55Speaker 6: and to make a very strange scene you couldn't really
- 1:00:00Speaker 6: feel what JD or Turk or Death or Leonard.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Thank you, Bobby, thank you for including him.
- 1:00:11Speaker 6: My pleasure, So if you had to find some strange
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: way to perform. I thought about this question when I
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: was listening to your podcast last week, and Donald said
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: when he had to memorize the line, you need the
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: surgical counsole, so you had to make a song about it.
- 1:00:32Speaker 6: So if if my question is not about memorizing things,
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: it's more about like acting the feeling.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, you know, let.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: Leonard go first. When I strapped on the arm.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Here's here's the thing. You you work hard. You work
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: so hard to try to feel everything, and that's what
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: comes with being an actor. You're gonna work hard hard
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: and then you've ever worked in your life to try
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: to feel it. But when the camera rolls and you
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: don't feel it, you better act the shit out of it,
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Because at the end of
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: the day, it still has to be made. So you're
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: gonna work your hard is to try and feel the
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: emotion and find the emotion and pinpoint what it is
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: that you're You know, you'll make notes and you'll do
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: all of that stuff, But there comes a time when
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: you're doing it where all of that preparation and stuff
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: isn't helping, you know what I mean, And so when
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: it's not helping, it's time for you to act the
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: shit out of it. And that's just how it goes,
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I would say there's times when it's really just natural,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and then there's times where it feels forced and you
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: don't feel present. You can see the cameraman and you
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: can see the crew, and your stomach's growling because you're hungry,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: and you know, you had an argument with someone in
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: your family and all these things that happen in any job,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: and you and you're in your head and you're distracted,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and the trick with acting is to always be as
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: present as possible. The good news about acting on film
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: and television is you really only need to do it
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: in spurts because you're you're you're trying to shine for
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: your other actor, but also when the camera's on you,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: when it's on when you're no matter what the shot is.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: When you're doing a play, you have to maintain that
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: for for two hours and and scene real. But with
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: with film and TV acting, the real challenge is to
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: get it in spurts enough so that it will cut
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: together and be believable. But but yeah, it can be
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: really it can be really challenging, especially when you're there's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: so much distraction. You know, there's phones ringing, and there's
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: a helicopter overhead, and and you're upset about something in
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: your private life. You know, it's it's it's a real
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: challenge to do everything you can to be present in
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: the moment.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: And when you can't be present, that's what that's what
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: acting is.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Then you fake it till you make it, fake it
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: till you make it. Now, Randall, when you were playing Leonard,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: did you did you didn't? Didn't Leonard have a love interest?
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: By the way, Oh, yes, I had to miss it
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: was a scene. Yes she was?
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Uh And wasn't she a fellow security guarden?
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: No, no, she was. Maybe she was a candy striper
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: or something. I just.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Oh, Robbie knows she was an old Yes, that was
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: I had to Were you open mouth kissing her?
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: That was specifically requested.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: By her? Was it in the script?
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: That parts a little foggy? But you know, I think.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Robbie's question, how did you maintain being president in the
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: moment when you were kissing the senior citizen?
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: You know what, Robbie, I should have been listening and
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: I've been listening to her.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you were listening to her mouth? Okay, ladies, good question, Yes,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: go ahead with an one Donald left. He was so
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: offended by that question he left.
- 1:04:05Speaker 8: Okay, So my question is we watched Scrubs a lot
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: of time, and the first time we watched it we
- 1:04:11Speaker 8: were just teenagers, and so we watched it in Italian.
- 1:04:15Speaker 8: So I wondered, have you ever listened to yourself dubbed
- 1:04:19Speaker 8: in other languages such as Alan or Spanish or Japanese.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I hate how they dubbed me in Spanish and
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Italian and stuff like that. I never have a deep voice.
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: I'm always like, yeah, I prefer your voice.
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: It's funny is that in most countries, when you become
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: a known actor, they pick the same actor to always
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: do you. So if Donald's in one, if he's in
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Scrubs and then he goes off to do another film
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: that is not even to do with Scrubs, it's usually
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: the same actor being Donald. And I hate that.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: I hate that that one person is like, oh no,
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: was he playing in this? Oh, don't worry about it.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: I did him on Scrubs. I got this.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: So to Donald's to Donald's dismay, that voice will always
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: be his voice.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: That pisses me off.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Man, Yeah, I have I've heard myself in almost so
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: many voices traveling around there, especially when the show was
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: on NonStop. We'd travel around the world and you turn
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: on the TV and there you were speaking German. It
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: was very funny. I remember, Uh, then there was a
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: thing where we had Germans in the show Herman the
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: German right with the with the balloon things. And then
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: I remember in Germany they had to change where they
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: were from because it made no sense that their language
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: was different, like you know, so you know, like think
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: about it. If the show has a character that's speaking
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: of the language, and all of a sudden, the show's
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: dubbed into that language, they then have to switch that
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: person's language, so it doesn't make sense.
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: I think we made them Belgium.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Yes, I think you're right. No, Randall, how do you
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: feel as being dubbed as Death and Leonard.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: As long as my fan base all?
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Did you ever hear? Have you ever heard yourself dubbed
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: in other languages?
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: Randall? I have not.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: The good thing about dubbing Death is that you don't
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: see his mouth moves, so it doesn't look bad exactly.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: I prefer subtitles, but they don't. They don't do that.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: A lot of countries just dub it.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: I don't prefer subtitles. I do not like subtitles.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: You know you'd rather be dubbed.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a I'm a very poor reader. So having
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: to read subtitles.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: Does your poor screen? Does your dyslexia? I've never asked
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: you this before, but does that make you less likely
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: to watch subtitled films?
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: No, you know, a good movie is a good movie,
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: no matter what, even with a learning disability, even if
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: it is written on the screen. My dyslexia isn't so
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: bad that I can't keep up right.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I just never asked you. I wondered if you if
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: you said, ah, fuck, it's be paying the ass for
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: me to read these subtitles.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Or no, I would though I would prefer not to read.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: I'd prefer to listen to a dubbed mix. Right, do
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: you guys have another question?
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Oh, you're giving them three because they're separated sisters.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: They're separated sisters. This is the first time they've talked
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: to each other since March.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Right, they're using us. They don't care about scrubs. They
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: just want to, you know, get on our zoom and
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: talk to each other.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Like I did a show back in a day called
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: free to Be a family, and we did a space
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: bridge to Russia and this is like our space bridge
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: between the UK and Italy.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Was that like free to be? Was that like free
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: to be you and me?
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it was free to be you and me.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: We're we're gonna have to see free to be You
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: and Me song one day.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: We're free to be I could say in a Russian
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: glee weebeat e e t t E glee. Weeat nos sennoy, Right, Wow,
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: we're free to be you and me. You and me
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: were free to be a family.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I only know a little Russian from the Billy Joel
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Coleopt album when he played Ussia and he said Milly
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Joe and the crowd went crazy.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: I know that because I got to rap We're free
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: to be you and me with the Fat Boys. There
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: a lot of people don't remember the Fat Boys, but
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: one of them was an amazing beat boxer, and he
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: beat boxed while I rapped.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: Anyway, So if you guys have another do you ever
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: answer any any any calls on the scrubs phone that
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: were from out of the country.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: No, I never answered any.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: When we did this episode with call Turk and we
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: had cal Turk. We had to get a real phone line,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: and Bill thought it would be I don't know if
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: it was you or Bill Randall, but said, you know,
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: rather than do a five five five number, let's get
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: a real number and have it all ring on a
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: cell phone. And so the cell phone was in the
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Scrubs production office and it would just ring all the time,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: and when you were randomly just walking through and you
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: had a minute to kill, you just answer it and
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: talk to fans because it would just ring NonStop, right.
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: Done stop for like five years. And we kep the
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: map and we put pins in it, you know, every
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: time we would get calls.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that was cool. It's all over the world, all right, ladies,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: one last question, go ahead.
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: That's the thing.
- 1:09:13Speaker 6: I started to really watch the show as well during
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: this quarantine because my boyfriend was with me and he
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: never watched Scrubs before, so I wanted to rewatch it
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: with him, and we watched it on Amazon Prime. And
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: I noticed the thing that you mentioned sometimes in the
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: podcast that they changed a few songs, especially one it
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: really pissed me off they changed it. It was the
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: one in the second season when j D and Elliott
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: kiss again and they start again and it's dreaming of you,
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: of the choral and I was so waiting for that scene,
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: and when it arrived, the song was a different one.
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: So I was so pissed off.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: And we are too.
- 1:09:58Speaker 6: Yeah, So I I was wondering whether you have some
- 1:10:02Speaker 6: one song or two that you really really like and
- 1:10:06Speaker 6: you're attached to it, you know, in one seat of Scrubs,
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: and you would really be angry if someone changed.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Wow. Good question.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: Well, you know, anytime Josh Rayden did music on the show,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: if that got taken off of the show, I would
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: be very upset. One because Josh is a very close
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: body of mine. And two his songs it seems like
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: were made for the episodes of Scrubs, you know what
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: I mean. Like, I don't know if Zach and Josh
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: had a thing where Zach would be like, yo, I
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: need you to write a song about this, and he'd
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: be like, I got it.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: No. But I mean the example that comes to mind
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: the same thing with me is is Robbie is Josh's song?
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Because you know we've told this on the podcast before,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: but when he wrote that song Winter that played at
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Benefaer's character's funeral, it was the first song you'd ever written,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: but he didn't have. Everyone was like, oh my god,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: this is amazing. Where's your album? He's like, album, this
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: is the only time ever written. So that one was
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: particularly special to all of us because Josh was our friend.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: He started playing guitar late in life. He wasn't someone
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: who played as a kid, and all of a sudden,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: you know, with the thanks to Bill putting him in
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: the show, his career blew up and he travels, you know,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: when the world is not under lockdown. He travels all
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: around the world. And you guy should see him when
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: he comes to Italy because you'll see you recognize a
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: lot of his music that was in scrubs. Another person
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: I want to just mention was Colin Hay, who was
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: really special for the show. And yeah, we're trying to
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: get brandall. I need your help. By the way, the
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: fans are all listening. Yes, I need to get Colin's
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: information because we'd like to have him on for the
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: episode he was on in season two.
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: Okay, I get you. Whatever I had is my last contact.
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: But Colin was a real friend of the show and
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: fun and funny and had a good sense of humor
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: about himself. There was a song I think it's in
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: this season, the Christmas episode in Donald you are running
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: and we play Centerman. Yeah, that song fels was super
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: powerful in the episode. And and we were all disappointed
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: when songs got changed out, particularly in those first couple
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: of seasons, because we were sort of like the bastard
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: step child over there and like always held to a
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: very strict low budget number. We licensed a lot of
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: songs not for forever. You know, when you license a
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: song may have something called in perpetuity and all of
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: the media that is now known or yet to be
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: figured out, and you can keep the song in. So
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: there's one and two. The music wasn't licensed that way,
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: so we had to make some of those decisions about
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: which baby kill.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: Say.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: I always assumed it was that I didn't know. What
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: you're implying is that as the seasons go on, you
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: then did shot started doing contracts that would cover streaming,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: but no one knew what streaming was at the.
- 1:12:52Speaker 9: Time, exactly exactly, So like the first couple of seasons,
- 1:12:56Speaker 9: the first couple of seasons, if the licensing has run
- 1:12:58Speaker 9: out and then and they didn't renegotiate or sign on
- 1:13:04Speaker 9: to continue the licensing.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: The network automatically just changed the song.
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean I actually had to sit with music
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: editor and music licensing for like a week or so
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: after the seasons were over in the summertime to figure
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: out like what songs were. Oh.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I always wondered who was who was putting these songs on.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: We've we talked about that on the podcast that you
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: don't listen to, But we always wondered, what what intern?
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: What intern somewhere is choosing these like second best songs.
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: It's it was an exercise and killing babies like everything.
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: It was great. But they're like, they're like, you absolutely
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: cannot have all of this. You know what do you
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: want to save? Right?
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: You're not gonna have Center Man forever. Wow, all right, ladies,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: we have to move on because death has to take
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: his kids swimming. And but thank you. I I'm sorry
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: that you're I feel sad that your two sisters that
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: are separated. That's horrible.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: Is there anything you want to say to each other?
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Yeah? Is there anything want to say to each other
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: while everyone's listening.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: It's a free call.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: Ye.
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: We actually rehearsed it before.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: Can we take a picture with you.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Yes, of course.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Yeah, let me just get fresh for you.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: Let me get fresh.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you, Thank you lady so much, Thank
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: you be saying so much. Nineteen oh nine, in the
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Bowling Alley, two people on the left side of the
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: screen spike the lens looked directly into the camera. I'm
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: not sure.
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: Oh my god, the Bowling Alley. Is that not the
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: day when our prop man got stuck in the under Yes,
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: it is. It does to retrieve the ball that he
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: reached it it was proper set.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Or Patrick my name Patrick Bolton.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: No, it wasn't. Wasn't because it was somebody who we
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: laughed at much longer before we helped him. It was
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: because the th the thing came down on him and
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: we thought it was hilarious. It was like a cartoon.
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: You just saw's legs kick it up, and then suddenly
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: somebody was like, oh my god, we should.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: Probably take get him out of there. I remember. He
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: wasn't with us very much longer after that either.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: He was.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Soon after he hid rowdy in the ceiling.
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: He went to that guy. That guy went to uh
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: Jimmy Kimmel. Ah.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Okay, So anyway, two people at the bowling eye, look
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: right in the lens. If you're interested in your in
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: your new hobby of finding people who spiked the lens.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: Donald you say, my baby knows how to knock him down.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: That was funny.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: My baby does know. Not that was a lot of
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: fun I don't remember. Okay, like most episodes we've watched
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: so far, when watching this, I didn't remember any of it.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: And I thought that was the cutest thing. I thought
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Turk and Carla was so cute and so on point
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: for the joke when JD's like, you know, couples go
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: through this, this is what happens. Name show me a
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: happy couple, and then away you see Turk and Carla
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: enjoying themselves.
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, that was wonderful.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: And they're so sweet together. I mean, you just you
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: just love them. And then especially of course, when you
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: cut to the documentary footage thing and they're you know,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: and they're being so adorable and and and both saying
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: how much they love each other.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: No, and you're rooting for them yeah yeah, yeah, and
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: not necessarily for Elliott and j D in this episode,
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: even though it starts off where you're rooting for them.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: You can tell, uh, once it gets to the bad times,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: you're like, wow, these guys really aren't good for each other.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Went sour so quick though, very well, you only have
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: a half an hour to tell the story.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: No, I'm saying like, in the world of the show,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: they dated for like in two weeks and then they
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: were like, this isn't working.
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: But I think that was acision by Bill because he wanted,
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: you know, he didn't want to have that protracted will
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: they Yeah, they will, they won't they the friends thing,
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: you know, and.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Then he ended up doing it anyway.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: Yes, well, but that's it works well even at the end, right,
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: But even at the end of the episode, you say,
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: you know that the therap do I think it'll work?
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: I do. And JD's right. JD's right, it does work.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: It just doesn't work at that moment in time. In
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: the long run, in the in the grand scheme of things,
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: these two are meant to be together.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: So sad though I was, I was sad watching it
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: that the two people who love each other who can't
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: I'm just a sucker for unrequited love and and love
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: that cannot be And here's two people that we want
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: to be together, but they can't.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: But that's when Harry met Sally. Like you said, that's it,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: That's when Harry met Sally all over again, you know
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: what I mean? Like, that's such one of my favorite
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: that's first of all one of my favorite movies Billy
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Crystal and Meg Ryan. But that story is great, you know.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: It reminds me of that Fiona Apple lyric when she says,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: only kisses on the cheek from now on.
- 1:17:56Speaker 7: And in a little woly they have to wave, no, no,
- 1:18:06Speaker 7: all right, if I need you, I'll just use your
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: simple name.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Keep going. Finish it.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Only kisses on the cheek from now on and in
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: a little while, we'll only have to wave.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: That's so fucked up. They don't have to wave. Hey,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: how you doing? Hey?
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: I remember breaking up with someone and then going to
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: give them a kiss and they gave me the cheek,
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: and being like, yeah, that's probably where what I should.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: We should probably gets on a cheek from one one
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: oh yeah, and now I just wave.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: The last thing I want to say is that when
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: I liked how Judy a her delivering and also the writing.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: When she she ends the documentary section and she says
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: he seems to like who I am and I just
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: thought that was so sweet, Like, you know, all bullshit aside,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: it seems like he genuinely likes who I genuinely am,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: and I just thought that was really pretty. Yeah, man, Randall,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: you've been a phenomenal guest.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: Thank you for having me.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: I feel like we're one step away from getting in
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: your car with you, so we want to let you go.
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: We should you just promise us she'll come back.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: And do you come back? Randall? I feel like you're
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: gonna be a fan favorite, because delight here, Randall. Randall,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: do you use a washcloth in the shower? Uh?
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: Okay, Randall's black, dude.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: I'm trying to tell you this. I'm trying to tell
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: you this. All black people use wash cloths.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: We have a house, right, Randall? We love you. You can
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: count us into our theme song. Thank you everybody for
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: listening to Fake Doctor's Real Friends. Randall count us in
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: three two one. Now. He doesn't listen to the doesn't
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: listen to the podcast. He's been outed. He's just been outed,
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: you guys.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: He doesn't listen to the podcast six seven eight.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: S that show we made about a bunch of talks
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: and nurses in Canada.
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: Nov I said, here's a story next.
- 1:20:09Speaker 7: All should know, so gather round you here, up, gather
- 1:20:15Speaker 7: round you here, up scuse me.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Shows and
