- 0:00Speaker 1: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the
- 0:03Speaker 1: winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell not,
- 0:09Speaker 1: for it was founded upon a rock. Matthew 7.25 Father,
- 0:15Speaker 1: there are many types of disasters. There are natural disasters
- 0:20Speaker 1: like hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes, but there are also the
- 0:24Speaker 1: storms of affliction and persecution that beats down the soul.
- 0:29Speaker 1: When I am most comfortable, suddenly, out of nowhere, calamity strikes.
- 0:35Speaker 1: In a moment, health, friends, comforts may be gone. That
- 0:40Speaker 1: is the time when I need an anchor in the storm,
- 0:44Speaker 1: a rock of security, something that can't be taken away.
- 0:49Speaker 1: The promises, confidence, and hope of heaven are only found
- 0:55Speaker 1: in Jesus Christ. All earthly calamities cannot touch these eternal comforts.
- 1:02Speaker 1: When my faith is founded on the rock of my salvation,
- 1:05Speaker 1: which is Jesus Christ, all disastrous events shall not defeat
- 1:10Speaker 1: my faith. The gates of hell shall not prevail against me,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and I shall not be beaten down and carried away
- 1:18Speaker 1: in despair. I will call upon the name of my God,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and He will lift me up. I may be shaken,
- 1:28Speaker 1: but I will not be removed from the steadfastness of
- 1:31Speaker 1: my faith. Life is not fair, and never will be.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Christ is the one who mediates justice in all things
- 1:40Speaker 1: and makes right what we have suffered. Thank you, Jesus,
- 1:44Speaker 1: for knowing my heart and turning what the enemy means
- 1:48Speaker 1: for evil to my good and your glory. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with us today. Continue your time
- 2:00Speaker 1: with God by listening to today's Bible story. Brought to
- 2:04Speaker 1: you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Noah and the Ark Before this story, we were told
- 2:18Speaker 2: the story of humanity's first bloodshed, Cain and Abel. Cain's
- 2:24Speaker 2: hatred for God and jealousy of his brother led to
- 2:27Speaker 2: the brutal murder of Abel. But evil did not stop
- 2:31Speaker 2: with Cain. Evil continued its reign over the hearts of man. God,
- 2:37Speaker 2: for the good of humanity, now has a plan for
- 2:40Speaker 2: purification and redemption. Inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:49Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,
- 2:54Speaker 3: I want you to know that I would absolutely love
- 2:56Speaker 3: to send you my daily devotional that will give you
- 3:00Speaker 3: fresh encouragement every single morning and day. From the moment
- 3:04Speaker 3: we wake up to the moment our head finally hits
- 3:07Speaker 3: the pillow, there are thousands of things demanding our attention.
- 3:12Speaker 3: But it's in the midst of all this crush and
- 3:14Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 3:17Speaker 3: truth in God's Word. That's why I want to help
- 3:20Speaker 3: you spend time each day growing in God's life-giving, life-changing
- 3:25Speaker 3: Word by sending you my free daily email devotional, PowerPoint Today.

- 3:37Speaker 3: That's JackGraham.org. JackGraham.org. As we begin today's story, we find
- 3:44Speaker 3: that since Cain was cursed to wander the earth, humankind
- 3:47Speaker 3: has multiplied. spreading out across the earth as God had intended.
- 3:52Speaker 3: But something else is also growing— evil. It is a theme
- 3:57Speaker 3: that's repeated throughout the Old Testament. Evil is reigning in
- 4:01Speaker 3: the hearts of man, and that is not at all
- 4:03Speaker 3: what God wants. Each new generation is growing more and
- 4:07Speaker 3: more evil. Sin is spreading like wildfire until finally God
- 4:12Speaker 3: has had enough. He cannot ignore the depravity any longer.
- 4:16Speaker 3: God is grieved at what has become of humanity. He
- 4:20Speaker 3: is ready to wipe mankind off the face of the earth.
- 4:23Speaker 3: With a great flood, he's going to wash the earth
- 4:25Speaker 3: clean of evil humanity. But there is one man who
- 4:29Speaker 3: is different. Noah, we're told, was righteous in God's eyes.
- 4:34Speaker 3: It must have been extremely challenging for Noah to live
- 4:37Speaker 3: a righteous life in the midst of such rampant evil.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Like Noah, you may often feel surrounded by evil in
- 4:44Speaker 3: our world today. And like Noah, You must stand apart
- 4:48Speaker 3: from those living to satisfy their own desires. As you
- 4:52Speaker 3: listen today, think about how Noah and his family must
- 4:54Speaker 3: have felt building this giant ark. They'd never before even
- 4:59Speaker 3: seen rain or experienced a flood. Think about the immense
- 5:03Speaker 3: amount of faith that's required. Imagine the fear in their
- 5:06Speaker 3: hearts as they entered the ark and watched God close
- 5:09Speaker 3: the door. But then watch as God carries them through
- 5:12Speaker 3: the flood, protecting them from all harm and providing for
- 5:15Speaker 3: them every step of the way. Let's listen now to
- 5:19Speaker 3: the story about a man, an ark, a great flood,
- 5:23Speaker 3: and God's plan of redemption for a world filled with evil.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Mankind multiplied. With more people filling the earth, more opportunities
- 5:37Speaker 2: for evil abounded. Sons and daughters of Cain established corrupt kingdoms.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Men treated women as property, and the twisted hearts of
- 5:48Speaker 2: people cast the world into darkness. Even the lives of
- 5:52Speaker 2: people began to shorten, and humans were dying earlier and earlier.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Mighty men of old would steal away women and rape them.
- 6:02Speaker 2: These things God would not ignore. The actions of people
- 6:07Speaker 2: at this time reflected a broken and corrupt heart. God
- 6:12Speaker 2: saw this wickedness and regretted greatly the state of humanity.
- 6:17Speaker 2: In sorrow he said, I will blot out man whom
- 6:21Speaker 2: I have created from the face of the land. Yet
- 6:25Speaker 2: out of this twisted generation there was one man named
- 6:29Speaker 2: Noah who was righteous in God's eyes. God said to Noah,
- 6:35Speaker 2: I have determined to make an end of all flesh,
- 6:38Speaker 2: for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold,
- 6:43Speaker 2: I will destroy them with the earth. The wrath of
- 6:47Speaker 2: God would descend in the form of rain, and water
- 6:51Speaker 2: from beneath the earth would come after. This was God's punishment.
- 6:56Speaker 2: The flood was coming. God instructed Noah and his sons
- 7:01Speaker 2: to build an ark a mighty vessel that would preserve him,
- 7:05Speaker 2: his wife, his sons, and their wives from the coming storm.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, built
- 7:16Speaker 2: the ark exactly as God had instructed. He also instructed
- 7:20Speaker 2: Noah that he should bring every animal with them in
- 7:23Speaker 2: pairs and keep them alive in the ark. Even now
- 7:27Speaker 2: God was making promises to redeem the world. Noah fearfully
- 7:33Speaker 2: and obediently followed every instruction that God gave him. When
- 7:37Speaker 2: the time had come for the flood to begin, God
- 7:40Speaker 2: told Noah, Go into the ark and take your family
- 7:44Speaker 2: with you. The rain will fall for forty days and
- 7:48Speaker 2: forty nights. It will destroy the land and all those.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Who live on it.
- 7:53Speaker 2: But your family and all the animals that come to
- 7:57Speaker 2: you will be saved. When Noah's family and all the
- 8:01Speaker 2: animals were secured in the ark, God shut the door.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Seven days later, the rain began to fall and the
- 8:09Speaker 2: cleansing power of God opened. Water fell from the skies
- 8:15Speaker 2: and the springs of the earth burst open violently. The
- 8:19Speaker 2: water rose, covering the mountains and washing away all the
- 8:24Speaker 2: corrupt and evil kingdoms built by the wickedness of mankind.
- 8:29Speaker 2: God once breathed life into mankind, and now he took
- 8:34Speaker 2: their breath away. All was destroyed, all but those on
- 8:39Speaker 2: the ark. After forty days had passed, the raining ceased,
- 8:44Speaker 2: and the earth was still underwater for a hundred and
- 8:48Speaker 2: fifty days. At the end of the hundred and fifty days,
- 8:52Speaker 2: the water had receded enough for the ark to land
- 8:55Speaker 2: on the side of a mountain. After four months had passed,
- 8:59Speaker 2: Noah opened a window and sent out a raven to
- 9:02Speaker 2: find dry land, but the raven never returned. Noah then
- 9:07Speaker 2: sent out a dove to seek out dry land, and
- 9:10Speaker 2: it returned because there was no dry land for it
- 9:13Speaker 2: to perch on. Seven days later he sent the dove
- 9:17Speaker 2: out again, and it came back with an olive leaf,
- 9:20Speaker 2: meaning that the dove had found dry land and came back.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Noah waited another seven days and sent the dove out again.
- 9:29Speaker 2: hopeful that it would not return, meaning the land was
- 9:32Speaker 2: ready to live on. This time it didn't return, so
- 9:36Speaker 2: Noah knew that the water was not covering the earth anymore.
- 9:41Speaker 2: After a month had passed, Noah opened the door and
- 9:44Speaker 2: saw that the land was dry. God beckoned Noah to
- 9:48Speaker 2: come out of the ark, so Noah brought his family
- 9:52Speaker 2: and the animals out of the ark and offered a
- 9:55Speaker 2: sacrifice to the Lord, just as Abel did before them.
- 9:59Speaker 2: God will... pleased to receive their offering and vowed to
- 10:03Speaker 2: never flood the earth again. So God gave Noah permission
- 10:07Speaker 2: to eat animals and plants so they might multiply the
- 10:11Speaker 2: earth again. With the newness of life, God put a
- 10:15Speaker 2: rainbow in the sky as a symbol of His promises.
- 10:19Speaker 2: The story of evil does not end here, but the
- 10:22Speaker 2: story of God and his passion to preserve and protect
- 10:26Speaker 2: those he loves is still unfolding. Evil abounds, but the
- 10:31Speaker 2: promises of God prevail still.
- 10:35Speaker 3: As the story of Noah begins, we get a picture
- 10:38Speaker 3: of just how bad things can and do get when
- 10:41Speaker 3: mankind follows only their own heart. Just four chapters removed
- 10:46Speaker 3: from when everything was perfect in the Garden of Eden,
- 10:49Speaker 3: The world is in disarray, death, violence, abuse. God simply cannot,
- 10:56Speaker 3: will not allow evil to go unchecked. He will not
- 11:00Speaker 3: stand idly by and watch the world he created be
- 11:03Speaker 3: destroyed by sinful men. There had to be a reckoning,
- 11:08Speaker 3: a judgment, and we see here in today's story what
- 11:11Speaker 3: God's righteous, holy anger can do. The truth is, we're
- 11:16Speaker 3: all deserving of such a flood of judgment for the
- 11:18Speaker 3: evil and sin in our own hearts. But God is
- 11:22Speaker 3: full of mercy and compassion. And here in the story
- 11:25Speaker 3: of Noah, we see that he is making a way
- 11:28Speaker 3: for his ultimate plan of redemption to be carried out.
- 11:32Speaker 3: We are not told much about Noah other than the
- 11:35Speaker 3: most important thing, that he was walking in a right
- 11:38Speaker 3: relationship with God. He was not perfect. He was also
- 11:43Speaker 3: touched by the sin nature passed down from Adam, but
- 11:46Speaker 3: he was righteous in the sight of God, righteous in
- 11:50Speaker 3: God's eyes. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament
- 11:54Speaker 3: tells us that it was Noah's faith in God that
- 11:56Speaker 3: made him righteous. He took God at his word even
- 11:59Speaker 3: when he had never seen what God told him was coming.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Look at how God delivers the news to Noah. First
- 12:06Speaker 3: the bad, then the good. Genesis 6, verses 17 through 19.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Now behold, I myself am bringing the flood of water
- 12:15Speaker 3: upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which there
- 12:18Speaker 3: is the breath of life from under heaven. Everything that
- 12:21Speaker 3: is on the earth shall perish. But I will establish
- 12:25Speaker 3: my covenant with you, and you shall enter the ark, you,
- 12:29Speaker 3: your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
- 12:34Speaker 3: And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall
- 12:36Speaker 3: bring two of every kind into the ark to keep
- 12:40Speaker 3: them alive with you. God made a covenant, a promise
- 12:44Speaker 3: with Noah. He and his family would be safe, along
- 12:48Speaker 3: with the animals that were on the ark. And through
- 12:51Speaker 3: Noah's family, God was going to save a remnant of
- 12:54Speaker 3: humanity to start afresh, and even the animal world as well.
- 12:59Speaker 3: But first came the flood. For 40 days it rained.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Waters rose and destroyed every person not on the ark,
- 13:07Speaker 3: just as God had said. But it wasn't over. Noah
- 13:10Speaker 3: and his family stayed on the ark for a full year.
- 13:15Speaker 3: God provided rescue for Noah and his family during the
- 13:17Speaker 3: flood and provision far after the flood. Isn't that the
- 13:21Speaker 3: way we see it in our lives as well? God
- 13:25Speaker 3: is with us during the storm and through the storm.
- 13:28Speaker 3: He stays with us, providing for our every need through
- 13:31Speaker 3: the aftermath of the storm. When it was finally safe
- 13:35Speaker 3: to step outside, what did Noah do? He offered a
- 13:38Speaker 3: sacrifice to God. worshiping him, thanking him for his protection,
- 13:43Speaker 3: his presence, his provision, and his mercy and grace. And
- 13:48Speaker 3: God gave Noah a beautiful sign of his covenant, a
- 13:51Speaker 3: rainbow in the sky. The story of Noah is a
- 13:55Speaker 3: powerful reminder that God, even in his anger, loves his
- 13:59Speaker 3: children and offers salvation and new life to those who
- 14:02Speaker 3: put their faith and trust in him. This was a
- 14:06Speaker 3: fresh start, but sadly not the end of sin and evil.
- 14:10Speaker 3: That would take a much bigger act, a sacrifice only
- 14:13Speaker 3: God himself can offer. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 14:18Speaker 3: this story that shows the consuming power of your righteousness
- 14:22Speaker 3: and justice for sin. Thank you also for what it
- 14:25Speaker 3: shows us about your loving heart to save those who
- 14:28Speaker 3: trust in you. Help us, as Noah did, to have
- 14:32Speaker 3: faith in you through Jesus Christ and follow you wherever
- 14:37Speaker 3: you lead.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Amen.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
