Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Halo territory. We're very lucky today to have
- 0:16Speaker 1: Jared Weaver with us.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Weave, How you doing, buddy.
- 0:19Speaker 3: I'm doing great drama. How you doing, buddy, Good to
- 0:21Speaker 3: see you.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Things are good. Start a Chinese New Year. My daughter
- 0:25Speaker 1: was all over me for not wearing red this morning.
- 0:28Speaker 1: So as you have three kids yourself, sometimes they will
- 0:32Speaker 1: let you know what to do and when to do it.
- 0:36Speaker 2: But yeah, they forgot to tell me to where red
- 0:38Speaker 2: as well.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I was good enough behind you. I did a very
- 0:42Speaker 1: poor job of collecting memorabilia. Maybe I should have taken
- 0:47Speaker 1: some notes from Ziegler. But you did a very nice
- 0:51Speaker 1: job and you have, you know, a lot to show
- 0:53Speaker 1: for there. So for the Angel fans that for some
- 0:57Speaker 1: reason may not be familiar, which I don't think there
- 1:00Speaker 1: are any. Jared's career was an outstanding one. Three time
- 1:06Speaker 1: All Star led the Ale and wins twice no hitter
- 1:10Speaker 1: in twenty twelve, along with winning twenty games and as
- 1:14Speaker 1: far as Angel history, second all time and wins second
- 1:18Speaker 1: in games started, third and innings pitched and third in
- 1:22Speaker 1: k's So a fantastic career that you know, there's really
- 1:29Speaker 1: nothing that you missed out on. I mean, you experienced
- 1:32Speaker 1: pretty much everything there is to have in the game.
- 1:35Speaker 1: You have a tremendous amount of knowledge on the pitching side,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and I think that's kind of what I.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Wanted to get intoday with you.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Pick your brain on how you went about it, cover
- 1:45Speaker 1: some of your you know, upbringing, your development, and then
- 1:50Speaker 1: maybe pick a few topics on the current game, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: we can kind of get into that. I think I
- 1:56Speaker 1: want to start out with, you know, in high school,
- 1:59Speaker 1: I was red and I could be wrong, but maybe
- 2:01Speaker 1: it was from an interview. What's this about you possibly
- 2:04Speaker 1: being better at hoops than baseball?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Oh?
- 2:08Speaker 4: Man, I don't know if I was better at hoops,
- 2:10Speaker 4: but I put more time into hoops. That was like
- 2:12Speaker 4: my favorite sport, you know, being at a you know
- 2:18Speaker 4: ady D or ADHD. The fast paced of basketball kind
- 2:23Speaker 4: of kept me locked in.
- 2:24Speaker 2: And uh, you know.
- 2:25Speaker 4: It was easier to shoot hoops out in front, out
- 2:27Speaker 4: in your front yard than play catch with yourself, you
- 2:30Speaker 4: know what I mean. So my dad was a basketball player.
- 2:33Speaker 4: We used to sit down and watch Laker games all
- 2:35Speaker 4: the time together. So just fell in love with basketball,
- 2:38Speaker 4: and uh, you know, i'd say above average high school player,
- 2:41Speaker 4: but I think that. You know, I just put a
- 2:45Speaker 4: little bit more time into basketball than I did in
- 2:47Speaker 4: baseball at that time, and then once that was gone,
- 2:50Speaker 4: just started concentrating on baseball.
- 2:53Speaker 1: You playing the five, the four, I got to think that,
- 2:57Speaker 1: well fade away.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Jump shot in that game. There's no no.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Well no nor no jerk nowisky really no. I didn't
- 3:03Speaker 4: have to really have that, but you know I could
- 3:06Speaker 4: run the one. If the guy was shorter, I'd go
- 3:08Speaker 4: in and post him up, you know, kind of one
- 3:10Speaker 4: through four guy.
- 3:11Speaker 3: We had a six to nine guy on our team,
- 3:13Speaker 3: so the center.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Position was was kind of upheld already, so uh, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 4: it just kind of went off of who was guarded me.
- 3:20Speaker 4: If I had a smaller guy on me, I'd go
- 3:21Speaker 4: down to the post and whatever.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And I mean, yeah, so yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: A couple a couple of downs in there, and you
- 3:28Speaker 1: still make uh you still attend some NBA games. I
- 3:32Speaker 1: know for a while you were you like to sit
- 3:35Speaker 1: up close. From what I understand, I did go to
- 3:39Speaker 1: a couple. I've since not really followed the NBA. When
- 3:44Speaker 1: the all three ball game came into the picture. Kind
- 3:48Speaker 1: of I was more of a defensive guy, you know,
- 3:50Speaker 1: back in the nineties and early two thousands, So the
- 3:53Speaker 1: NBA game has kind of not caught my eye. The
- 3:56Speaker 1: past couped Beyers, so kind of moved on from that
- 3:59Speaker 1: college hoops. Yeah, Robert Rory being my favorite player. When
- 4:03Speaker 1: I drop that on people now, especially younger, other than
- 4:07Speaker 1: maybe no idea of TV that, yeah, had no idea.
- 4:12Speaker 2: It is what it is, for better or worse. Yeah,
- 4:15Speaker 2: growing up I know.
- 4:16Speaker 1: That your your your dad Dave, and your mom Gail
- 4:19Speaker 1: played a huge influence on you and your work ethic.
- 4:22Speaker 1: It looks like, you know, your dad worked very hard
- 4:25Speaker 1: all day and he would carve out time when he
- 4:28Speaker 1: got home when you were younger to play catch and
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know, no doubt exhausted from a hard day's work.
- 4:36Speaker 1: But for you and your brothers, your your brother Jeff
- 4:39Speaker 1: being six years older, that had to mean a lot
- 4:42Speaker 1: to you to you know, especially now reflecting on the
- 4:46Speaker 1: back side of it, how hard it is to grind
- 4:48Speaker 1: it out all day and then still carve out time
- 4:50Speaker 1: and be mentally present for your kids.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Yeah, man, I mean I owe my dad, Like just
- 4:56Speaker 4: sitting back watching my dad do his thing as far
- 4:58Speaker 4: as working, you know, electrician out of the house by
- 5:02Speaker 4: four am didn't get home till seven seven pm sometimes,
- 5:07Speaker 4: I mean literally carrying tool bags all day.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And I mean i'd see him crawl through the door.
- 5:14Speaker 4: On his hands and knees because his back was killing
- 5:16Speaker 4: him after a long day, and and still made time
- 5:20Speaker 4: to rebound balls or play catch. And you know, just
- 5:24Speaker 4: seeing how hard he worked made me kind of want
- 5:28Speaker 4: to work hard. And also he wanted you know, we'd
- 5:31Speaker 4: go on job sites with him every now and again,
- 5:34Speaker 4: and I think he wanted to see us or wanted
- 5:37Speaker 4: us to see that how hard he was working and
- 5:40Speaker 4: how hard that was, and he wanted.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Us to kind of take a different path.
- 5:43Speaker 4: And and you know, obviously that that happened, and you know,
- 5:47Speaker 4: I obviously owe him a lot and home everything for
- 5:50Speaker 4: you know who I am today.
- 5:51Speaker 1: For sure, That's the attitude that I saw when I
- 5:56Speaker 1: first kind of encountered you. You know, it was you
- 6:00Speaker 1: kept it loose as well. But I mean, I think
- 6:03Speaker 1: the biggest compliment I can give is a competitor, A
- 6:06Speaker 1: true competitor, somebody that wanted to take the ball, never
- 6:10Speaker 1: shied away from any opportunity, and you were looking to win.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I mean, there were no two ways about it. That's
- 6:15Speaker 1: one topic that we have discussed a little on the show,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and I've debated some We got somebody still in the
- 6:21Speaker 1: game talking about it's about the process, and I said,
- 6:26Speaker 1: at the major league level, I don't agree at all,
- 6:29Speaker 1: it's about wins.
- 6:30Speaker 2: It's not.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I mean, what process are you talking? Unless you're not
- 6:33Speaker 1: trying to win, then maybe it's a process. But for
- 6:36Speaker 1: you, you know, that was a hallmark. I mean, you were
- 6:41Speaker 1: it set the tone, and I think that that was
- 6:44Speaker 1: probably a reflection of some of the guys that mentored
- 6:46Speaker 1: you coming up and and other things. Why Long Beach State.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I'm sure that there were some other options, but that
- 6:53Speaker 1: seemed like a perfect spot for you to go, and
- 6:55Speaker 1: you really thrive there.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I really was. I mean it's the best decision
- 7:00Speaker 4: I ever made.
- 7:02Speaker 2: For sure. You know I didn't.
- 7:03Speaker 4: I really didn't get a lot of looks at a
- 7:05Speaker 4: out of high school. I think I mostly got looks
- 7:08Speaker 4: because my brother was in the big leagues and kind
- 7:11Speaker 4: of had the bloodline, I guess, and uh, you know
- 7:14Speaker 4: it wasn't great in high school.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Uh and uh, you know.
- 7:18Speaker 4: A couple like four or five California teams I went
- 7:21Speaker 4: on visits to, uh, nothing out of State really uh,
- 7:24Speaker 4: and Long Beach you know, just the tradition when I
- 7:27Speaker 4: got there, and the guys when I went on my
- 7:28Speaker 4: recruiting trip. Uh, just the camaraderie of the guys was awesome.
- 7:33Speaker 2: The beach.
- 7:34Speaker 4: I mean, I love the beach, so you know, having
- 7:36Speaker 4: the water in your backyard was was pretty cool too.
- 7:38Speaker 4: And uh, you know, just uh actually, when you know,
- 7:42Speaker 4: my brother played on the Olympic team in ninety six
- 7:45Speaker 4: and Dave Snow was the pitching coach, and Dave Snow
- 7:49Speaker 4: happened to be the pitching coach at Long Beach and
- 7:51Speaker 4: that was the ultimate deciding factor to go there, was
- 7:54Speaker 4: Jeff had such high regards of you know, coach Snow
- 7:57Speaker 4: and how he developed players and and whatnot. And you know,
- 8:01Speaker 4: it's kind of funny when I got there, coached Snow
- 8:04Speaker 4: ended up retiring and going into scouting, and Long Beach
- 8:08Speaker 4: State gave me the opportunity to kind of avoid my
- 8:10Speaker 4: scholarship and go elsewhere if I wanted to, And you know,
- 8:14Speaker 4: I decided to just stick it out and go with
- 8:17Speaker 4: you know, the coaches that they were coming in after him,
- 8:20Speaker 4: And I mean, it couldn't have been a better situation
- 8:23Speaker 4: for me, Mike Weathers and Troy Buckley.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Troy Buckley being the pitching coach was awesome.
- 8:30Speaker 4: I mean, just kept it simple and really knew how
- 8:33Speaker 4: to get his point across in an easy, easy manner.
- 8:36Speaker 4: And coach Weathers was I would compare him to like
- 8:40Speaker 4: a soocia of college. I mean he was the knowledge
- 8:42Speaker 4: of the game was unbelievable. And would always sit next
- 8:47Speaker 4: to him in the dugout just to kind of learn
- 8:48Speaker 4: anything I could from him. You know, I didn't really
- 8:51Speaker 4: know the ins and outs of baseball when I got there.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I just know throwing a ball over the plate, and
- 8:57Speaker 4: then buck took my control to another level and you know,
- 9:02Speaker 4: just kind of flourish from there. So just like my dad,
- 9:05Speaker 4: I owe those guys a lot. If it wasn't for them, yeah,
- 9:09Speaker 4: there's no way I'm where I ended up. So yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 4: I loved it there, loved the coaches there, and yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 4: I wouldn't have had any other way.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Well, the results speak for themselves. Thirty seven to nine
- 9:23Speaker 1: career record. In two thousand and four, you went fifteen
- 9:28Speaker 1: and one with a one point six two two hundred
- 9:31Speaker 1: and thirteen strikeouts. I saw you in two thousand and
- 9:35Speaker 1: four pitch against the USC Trojans. I'm fairly certain it
- 9:39Speaker 1: was oh four, but you struck out the first ten
- 9:42Speaker 1: hitters in three innings. I think there was a passball,
- 9:47Speaker 1: And I'm not certain that that was the only time
- 9:49Speaker 1: you didn't strike out ten and three innings in college.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I think it happened twice. But I said, wow, I mean,
- 9:57Speaker 1: this guy, you know, and it wasn't like they were
- 10:01Speaker 1: the type of at bats that went seven eight pitches either.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I mean, you were able to put these guys away
- 10:07Speaker 1: with relative ease, and I think it one of the
- 10:10Speaker 1: big things, and I watched it throughout your big league
- 10:12Speaker 1: career too, was your command. And to me, control is
- 10:17Speaker 1: just being able to throw strikes. Command is being able
- 10:20Speaker 1: to throw strikes where you want them, and that was
- 10:24Speaker 1: one of the huge things that watching you, and I
- 10:27Speaker 1: think at the time, being a younger player, you know,
- 10:30Speaker 1: the game is moving very fast and you can't always,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you know, take the time to reflect on what you're
- 10:38Speaker 1: looking at. But in hindsight, I mean, you could dota
- 10:42Speaker 1: nats ass for lack of a better term, I mean,
- 10:45Speaker 1: where did that come from? You're six seven, and you
- 10:48Speaker 1: got long levers, long arms, and that kind of command.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Was that something that long Beach State you were able
- 10:58Speaker 1: to kind of really hone that in or have you was,
- 11:00Speaker 1: you know, had the ability to kind of locate pitches
- 11:03Speaker 1: where you want them.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Well, going back to the tent, I think the sun
- 11:08Speaker 4: was setting in center field at that time with the
- 11:10Speaker 4: ten strikeouts, so the guys really couldn't see the ball
- 11:12Speaker 4: too much.
- 11:13Speaker 2: You know, I think that had a lot to do
- 11:14Speaker 2: with it. But no, Yeah, college was.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Fun, but I mean, yeah, Buckley stressed just repeating your delivery,
- 11:23Speaker 4: repeating your mechanics, and I mean so much time in
- 11:27Speaker 4: the bullpen just working on location and you know, not
- 11:31Speaker 4: not just your fastball, but all pitches. And he just
- 11:35Speaker 4: grinded that into us that location was everything pitching in getting.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Guys off the plate.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Just really had to use my whole repertoire at the
- 11:44Speaker 4: time and developing pitches as I went along as well,
- 11:49Speaker 4: developed a changeup which I never had.
- 11:52Speaker 2: But he just always stressed.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Repeating your delivery, repeating your.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Mechanics, and and location was everything. So he just kind
- 12:01Speaker 4: of instilled that in my brain, and you know, you
- 12:03Speaker 4: got to have some fuel. I feel like I was
- 12:04Speaker 4: a really good feel pitcher as well. Had a feel
- 12:07Speaker 4: for all my pitches. It didn't matter what count. I
- 12:09Speaker 4: was comfortable and throwing and any pitch that that I
- 12:13Speaker 4: wanted to in any count. And you know, just you know,
- 12:17Speaker 4: having that feel really helped out with obviously location, but
- 12:21Speaker 4: I think Buckley instilling location into me at an early
- 12:24Speaker 4: age kind of set the tone to where I got
- 12:27Speaker 4: to for sure.
- 12:29Speaker 1: What happened to down and away fastballs? How are those
- 12:32Speaker 1: not cool anymore? I mean, that's I've talked about it before,
- 12:37Speaker 1: but like the batting average on the hitting side falling
- 12:40Speaker 1: out of fashion, I think locating down in a way
- 12:45Speaker 1: is essential for any pitcher that wants to go far
- 12:49Speaker 1: in this game. It's if done correctly. And both you
- 12:53Speaker 1: and Dan Herron dan infuriating getting ahead with strike one,
- 13:00Speaker 1: And there were times I didn't face you as much
- 13:04Speaker 1: as him. But when he was with the Dodgers, I
- 13:06Speaker 1: was with the Diamondbacks, and I would game plan it.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm going to go up there, I'm going
- 13:10Speaker 1: to jump on him. You know, I know what he's
- 13:11Speaker 1: gonna throw. But if it's located, you can't do anything
- 13:13Speaker 1: with it. And oftentimes I just spit on it and
- 13:15Speaker 1: be like, Okay, there we go again, Grank He was
- 13:18Speaker 1: also excellent at it, as are you know, most guys
- 13:20Speaker 1: that know what they're doing. But you know, for for
- 13:23Speaker 1: some guys it can be a tough pitch. But I
- 13:26Speaker 1: think you you probably worked hard to be able to
- 13:30Speaker 1: do that because you knew how valuable it was.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Yeah, and I mean especially coming across my body, that
- 13:36Speaker 4: down and the way kind of even looked even more
- 13:38Speaker 4: down the way I would think to Righty's I mean,
- 13:40Speaker 4: maybe you can attest to that, but I like, if
- 13:44Speaker 4: if somebody was going to beat me, it was going
- 13:46Speaker 4: to be a way and if you did tip your cap.
- 13:49Speaker 4: But that was that was my bread and butter. I honestly,
- 13:53Speaker 4: I never really pitched in for strikes against rities. It
- 13:56Speaker 4: was just for show to get him off the plate.
- 13:58Speaker 4: If I felt like they were leading, leaning over and
- 14:00Speaker 4: getting comfortable with that down the way pitch, every so
- 14:04Speaker 4: often I would try to go on for a strike,
- 14:06Speaker 4: but it was more an effect pitch, even with lefties,
- 14:10Speaker 4: until I developed that two seamer that I could that
- 14:12Speaker 4: I could come back in.
- 14:13Speaker 3: For a strike. But down in a way.
- 14:16Speaker 4: It was always my mindset and it was my my
- 14:18Speaker 4: bread and butter. And sometimes you have to just you know,
- 14:21Speaker 4: trust your stuff against the other guys stuff, and and
- 14:25Speaker 4: you know, if you gets you, you tip your cap.
- 14:27Speaker 4: But I mean nine, I mean, you guys are gonna
- 14:31Speaker 4: fail seven out of ten times, right, I mean there's
- 14:33Speaker 4: obviously guys that are, uh, you know, gonna get me
- 14:36Speaker 4: more than than others. Some guys are more comfortable, but
- 14:40Speaker 4: you know, you play the ratios and I'm not very
- 14:42Speaker 4: a number not a numbers guy by any means, but
- 14:45Speaker 4: you know, if I'm gonna get you seven out of
- 14:47Speaker 4: ten times, I'm gonna go with.
- 14:48Speaker 3: What I'm comfortable throwing.
- 14:50Speaker 4: And uh, and you know just kind of went off
- 14:53Speaker 4: of that. I trusted my stuff and and committed to
- 14:56Speaker 4: my stuff, and uh, you know ended up working out.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Sometimes it didn't.
- 15:00Speaker 4: But like I said from the beginning, you know, if
- 15:04Speaker 4: you were going to get me opposite field, then you
- 15:08Speaker 4: know you're gonna I'm gonna tip my cap and you
- 15:11Speaker 4: you hit my best stuff, and sometimes it's gonna happen.
- 15:13Speaker 4: But I think the mentality has kind of changed that
- 15:16Speaker 4: you know, these guys are throwing one hundred hundred and
- 15:18Speaker 4: three miles an hour, and the location part of it's
- 15:22Speaker 4: just gone out the window. Which is you know, sad
- 15:25Speaker 4: to see. You know, I feel like pitching is kind
- 15:27Speaker 4: of an art, keeping guys off balance, reading their swings.
- 15:30Speaker 3: It's kind of a chess game.
- 15:31Speaker 4: And now it's just kind of an all or nothing game,
- 15:33Speaker 4: which you know the fans love to see. But you know,
- 15:37Speaker 4: me knowing the game and knowing pitching, it's just you know,
- 15:40Speaker 4: a lost art that is dwindling away. Unfortunately.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I'd like to see it come back. Personally, It's a
- 15:46Speaker 1: style that I grew up watching. You grew up watching
- 15:51Speaker 1: many moons ago. I was also on the mound. It
- 15:55Speaker 1: transitioned after high school failing a physical with doctor Yoakum
- 16:01Speaker 1: so that took care of that, but it was I
- 16:05Speaker 1: think the Braves probably played a huge part in Guys,
- 16:09Speaker 1: you're three years older than me, but pitching with movement, pitching.
- 16:13Speaker 1: You know, what was a big message to me was
- 16:16Speaker 1: knees to ankles. Now it's an exaggeration, but pitching down
- 16:19Speaker 1: on the strike zone, and that was what was setting
- 16:24Speaker 1: up guys, spinning in the dirt, like you said, hard
- 16:27Speaker 1: in and really setting guys up in a way that
- 16:31Speaker 1: you can navigate three times through the order. I know
- 16:34Speaker 1: one of your goals was to go seven innings.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Or more. But I have to think, and it's not.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Trying to you know, say anything negative about today's game,
- 16:46Speaker 1: but if you were to go four and two thirds
- 16:50Speaker 1: get taken out of the game, I don't think you'd
- 16:52Speaker 1: be stoked on getting high fives on the dugout. I
- 16:56Speaker 1: think it might be more likely that your glove would
- 16:58Speaker 1: go flying or the gatorade would go fly. That just
- 17:00Speaker 1: wasn't That wasn't a good start in your opinion.
- 17:04Speaker 4: No, I felt like I was letting my team down
- 17:06Speaker 4: if I went anything less than five innings, and and
- 17:09Speaker 4: not only that, I'm making my bullpen work harder. So
- 17:12Speaker 4: my goal was to give those guys in the bullpen
- 17:14Speaker 4: as long as rest as possible, especially if they had
- 17:18Speaker 4: been working hard to three, three or four days before me.
- 17:22Speaker 4: You know, I remember, and I got this from Lackey,
- 17:26Speaker 4: who was the best mentor I could ever have as
- 17:29Speaker 4: far as being competitive and working hard and what it
- 17:32Speaker 4: took to get you know, not just one or two
- 17:34Speaker 4: years in the big leagues, but you know, sended a career.
- 17:38Speaker 4: You know, you you walk past the you know, the
- 17:41Speaker 4: bullpen guys on your way out, and you're like, I
- 17:43Speaker 4: got you guys today. You know, you guys take a break,
- 17:45Speaker 4: blah blah blah. And you know, I just felt like,
- 17:50Speaker 4: you know, getting deep in the game was helping your
- 17:52Speaker 4: team out and giving some guys a break that have
- 17:55Speaker 4: been working hard. And if I didn't do that, I
- 17:58Speaker 4: felt like I was letting my guys down, and uh,
- 18:00Speaker 4: you know, didn't feel too good about it.
- 18:02Speaker 3: And you know when I came up.
- 18:03Speaker 4: I mean it was you know, you had some veteran
- 18:06Speaker 4: guys in there that would wear you out if you
- 18:08Speaker 4: didn't go at least seven innings. So uh, you know,
- 18:11Speaker 4: I think it was just a mindset that was kind
- 18:13Speaker 4: of instilled in me when I first got there and
- 18:16Speaker 4: try to ride that out through you know, throughout my career.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I think it could be kind of hard for guys that.
- 18:23Speaker 1: And you were a great guide to the big leagues
- 18:26Speaker 1: for some of the you know, borgeous uh conger, et cetera.
- 18:32Speaker 1: You know, as far as mentoring us, I got it again.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 18:36Speaker 1: You were always very generous taking us out to eat
- 18:39Speaker 1: on the road and showing us, uh, you know, where
- 18:41Speaker 1: to go for a good meal. And I'm assuming guys
- 18:45Speaker 1: did that for you as well. I don't think it's
- 18:49Speaker 1: happening as much now as it used to. I think
- 18:53Speaker 1: there's other ways guys kind of uh, maybe you're bonding,
- 18:56Speaker 1: but that aspect of it and it's not hate, but
- 19:00Speaker 1: it's earning your stripes in my opinion, Like when I
- 19:03Speaker 1: came up the training room, for example, that was for
- 19:05Speaker 1: the veterans. Today, it's totally different. They try and be
- 19:09Speaker 1: proactive and almost encourage guys. A lot of teams might
- 19:13Speaker 1: say it's mandatory that you come in and get work
- 19:15Speaker 1: done every day. But when I was coming up, like,
- 19:19Speaker 1: I'm not going to get in Bobby A. Brave's way
- 19:22Speaker 1: on the training table, I'm not going to get in
- 19:24Speaker 1: your way or Tory Hunter's way, Like, boy, that's ridiculous.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I either need to get there at eleven o'clock.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Or you know, this just doesn't fly. So I think
- 19:34Speaker 1: for guys that experience that and trying to relate to
- 19:38Speaker 1: the way the game's changed, sometimes it can be a
- 19:40Speaker 1: little challenging. But it's not better, it's not worse. It's
- 19:44Speaker 1: just different. But you know, I think that's I guess
- 19:49Speaker 1: I'm trying to advocate for players that right now is
- 19:53Speaker 1: a hard time to get into the game on the
- 19:55Speaker 1: coaching side, I've talked to many people that have some opinions,
- 20:00Speaker 1: and I think anyone with a strong opinion that had
- 20:02Speaker 1: a good playing career you would fit that mold sometimes
- 20:06Speaker 1: can be a little bit tough of a fit for
- 20:11Speaker 1: front offices that want, you know, total cohesion or everyone
- 20:16Speaker 1: just to kind of be on the same page. And
- 20:18Speaker 1: I think part of the reason why is you've done it,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you've experienced it, and if you feel strongly, you know,
- 20:22Speaker 1: especially as it pertains to a certain picture, you might
- 20:25Speaker 1: just you know, you want to pull them to the
- 20:26Speaker 1: side and say, hey, I think that you know, this
- 20:29Speaker 1: is where you might be going wrong. I know the
- 20:32Speaker 1: current Angels team, they have filled the roster with more veterans,
- 20:36Speaker 1: but it's still you had John Lackeye you look up to.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I know Scott Shields was probably another guy, Donnelly, many others.
- 20:47Speaker 1: But some of these teams these days are so young
- 20:50Speaker 1: that you wonder who was actually guiding these guys.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think that's a big, a big deal,
- 20:56Speaker 3: you know.
- 20:57Speaker 4: I think, you know, like you said, Lackey out of Kennedy, Shields,
- 21:01Speaker 4: Donnelly got Sam and Percival. I didn't play with him
- 21:05Speaker 4: and I had a spring training with him. God, I
- 21:09Speaker 4: feel like I'm leaving some guys out that I shouldn't be.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Erstat who was the greatest competitor I've ever seen, Anderson.
- 21:14Speaker 4: I mean, these guys. I had so many guys to
- 21:16Speaker 4: go to, and I feel like that helped. You know,
- 21:21Speaker 4: I came in young. I came in a little you know, cocky.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I started with nine and Ozero or something to start
- 21:27Speaker 4: my career. But those guys would put me in my
- 21:29Speaker 4: place when I wasn't doing something right. You talk about,
- 21:33Speaker 4: you know, going in the food line too early, or
- 21:35Speaker 4: getting in the training room too early, and not giving
- 21:39Speaker 4: these these veteran guys that have been around the time
- 21:41Speaker 4: to get their bodies ready because it you know, thirty
- 21:45Speaker 4: eight years old, it might take you a little longer
- 21:47Speaker 4: than a twenty three year old to get ready.
- 21:49Speaker 2: So you gotta, you know, you.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Gotta get your ass out of the out of the
- 21:52Speaker 4: training room and and and get in there when you
- 21:55Speaker 4: know no one's in there. But uh, you know, Lackie
- 21:58Speaker 4: took me under my wing and and really grinding me
- 22:02Speaker 4: on working hard the conditioning side of things, the weight
- 22:05Speaker 4: side of things.
- 22:06Speaker 3: When to kind of push it when it back off.
- 22:08Speaker 2: It's a long.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Season, uh, you know, and I try to instill what
- 22:14Speaker 4: kind of lackey told me into you guys coming up.
- 22:17Speaker 4: And you know, I might have rubbed some guys the
- 22:19Speaker 4: wrong way and and probably didn't some guys probably didn't
- 22:22Speaker 4: understand me. But if you did, I would hope that,
- 22:25Speaker 4: you know, you kind of flourish from it. And uh,
- 22:28Speaker 4: you know, and and you know, I just love being
- 22:33Speaker 4: in the clubhouse and competing and being with you guys,
- 22:35Speaker 4: and and uh, you know, maybe my mindset kind of
- 22:40Speaker 4: got a little bit out of control with trying to
- 22:42Speaker 4: put you guys in the right direction, but that was
- 22:45Speaker 4: just the way my mentality was.
- 22:46Speaker 3: And kind of learned from those guys and.
- 22:49Speaker 4: And uh but yeah, towards the end of my career,
- 22:52Speaker 4: you know, with the Padres, there was uh it was
- 22:56Speaker 4: not like that anymore, and and you know, I had
- 22:58Speaker 4: to kind of back off and and uh kind of
- 23:01Speaker 4: cater to these guys, which was you know, it was
- 23:04Speaker 4: hard for me to do.
- 23:05Speaker 2: And uh, you know, there.
- 23:06Speaker 4: Wasn't any dinners going out, you know, with with ten
- 23:09Speaker 4: to twelve guys or everybody was going to their hotel
- 23:12Speaker 4: rooms and playing video games and not hanging out in
- 23:15Speaker 4: the hotel bar to talk about the game afterwards or
- 23:18Speaker 4: you know, things like that.
- 23:19Speaker 3: So it was, uh, not only my career was dying.
- 23:22Speaker 4: But the passion for coming to the field every day
- 23:26Speaker 4: and and then trying to work hard for those guys
- 23:30Speaker 4: kind of went out the window too.
- 23:31Speaker 3: So, uh, it's it's a totally different game.
- 23:35Speaker 4: And uh, yeah, I don't know. And going to your
- 23:39Speaker 4: question about you know, not wanting ex players and stuff
- 23:43Speaker 4: around these these clubs is kind of crazy to me.
- 23:45Speaker 4: It's like almost almost seems like they want kind of
- 23:48Speaker 4: yes man and nobody to kind of, you know, say
- 23:52Speaker 4: say their opinions or whatnot.
- 23:54Speaker 3: So it's it's totally different.
- 23:56Speaker 2: You know.
- 23:56Speaker 4: I've been back and forth a couple of times with
- 23:58Speaker 4: the Angels and it's definitely a different feel for sure,
- 24:02Speaker 4: And you know, sad to see, but I mean that's
- 24:06Speaker 4: that's every sport, I guess is evolving in a different direction,
- 24:09Speaker 4: and it's just tough for guys that have been there
- 24:11Speaker 4: and seeing the old school aspect of it and learn
- 24:14Speaker 4: from a lot of those guys in the old school
- 24:16Speaker 4: aspect is kind of going out the window, which is sad.
- 24:21Speaker 1: I think the game moves in cycles and what's trendy.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Like For instance, this winner hiring college coaches. The Giants
- 24:32Speaker 1: and a few others have done that, and I have
- 24:36Speaker 1: to assume Pat Murphy probably played a big part in that, going,
- 24:40Speaker 1: you know, from a Hall of Fame college career at
- 24:43Speaker 1: ASU and then having tremendous success with the Brewers, so hey,
- 24:48Speaker 1: we got to find another Pat Murphy. And likewise, some
- 24:52Speaker 1: of these newer pitching labs and hitting labs very trendy,
- 24:59Speaker 1: and all those guys get plucked, and I think it's
- 25:01Speaker 1: can be tough, especially for minor league coaches who have
- 25:04Speaker 1: put in a lot of time and a lot of
- 25:06Speaker 1: years to watch younger I'm not going to say unestablished,
- 25:12Speaker 1: but coaches just get rifled straight to the big leagues,
- 25:15Speaker 1: and you know, they're left kind of wondering what happened.
- 25:19Speaker 1: You know, there's a thought process that you put in
- 25:23Speaker 1: the time and you're going to get rewarded for it.
- 25:25Speaker 1: But I think that's part of the way the game
- 25:27Speaker 1: is trending. The Angels, on the other hand, have buck
- 25:31Speaker 1: that trend to his trend yet again, but their staff
- 25:36Speaker 1: is experienced, and I actually think it's a really cool thing.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Mike Maddox is on board, Kurt Suzuki has filled out,
- 25:42Speaker 1: you know, his his coaching staff, and I think Perry
- 25:46Speaker 1: probably played a huge part.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I know he did. He's a general manager and.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Putting together a staff that really stands out.
- 25:54Speaker 2: You know.
- 25:54Speaker 1: John Gibbons is bench coach, Brady Anderson, John Mabray on
- 25:57Speaker 1: the hitting side. I'm sure I will forget, but don cheaty.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Like all of these guys are career baseball men and
- 26:03Speaker 1: a lot of them played. A lot of them had
- 26:05Speaker 1: great playing careers too. What do you think a guy
- 26:07Speaker 1: like Mike Maddox might be able to do for these
- 26:11Speaker 1: pitchers that.
- 26:14Speaker 2: A lot of them.
- 26:14Speaker 1: There's a lot of guys that are reclamation projects, is
- 26:18Speaker 1: what gets thrown around. But to me, it's guys that
- 26:20Speaker 1: are needing a little boost to confidence, probably more between
- 26:23Speaker 1: the years. Alec Manoa, Jordan Romano, Kirby Yates. These guys
- 26:28Speaker 1: have done it before, and they've done it at a
- 26:30Speaker 1: high level, and they're probably, in my opinion, just looking
- 26:33Speaker 1: for a little bit of help, maybe on the mechanics side,
- 26:36Speaker 1: but you know, an injection of some confidence that lets
- 26:40Speaker 1: them know, hey man, this stuff is still there. This
- 26:42Speaker 1: is how we're going to do it, and this is
- 26:44Speaker 1: you know this, I'll take you there.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 3: I kind of went back to.
- 26:50Speaker 4: What was it instructs where they where they came to
- 26:55Speaker 4: Angels Stadium or no, whatnot.
- 26:57Speaker 2: And it was kind of nice to sit.
- 26:59Speaker 4: I'm never sat in the meetings and on the coaching
- 27:02Speaker 4: side or anything like that, and and it was kind
- 27:05Speaker 4: of cool to see Perry kind of wanting to bring
- 27:07Speaker 4: back that old school mentality into the game and bringing
- 27:10Speaker 4: back some guys that you know, that had played and
- 27:13Speaker 4: have the experience of what it takes to get through
- 27:16Speaker 4: one hundred and sixty two games and to see it
- 27:19Speaker 4: kind of come into fruition is awesome.
- 27:21Speaker 3: I think it's great.
- 27:22Speaker 4: A guy like Mike Maddix, I mean, guy's been around forever,
- 27:25Speaker 4: He's seen everything there is to see on the pitching
- 27:28Speaker 4: side getting through a game. He's going to be able
- 27:31Speaker 4: to guide these guys through getting through nine innings, maybe
- 27:35Speaker 4: even help them getting deeper in the game. It sounded
- 27:38Speaker 4: like from from what I heard, they wanted to bring
- 27:42Speaker 4: back more of the conditioning part of it, running long
- 27:45Speaker 4: distance running, getting guys in condition to go seven.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Eight, nine innings.
- 27:51Speaker 4: And you know, I hope that that that it works out,
- 27:55Speaker 4: because I think it's a lost a lost cause in
- 27:57Speaker 4: the game anymore. And you know, I think with what
- 28:00Speaker 4: Boachi did, uh, with with what he had going on
- 28:03Speaker 4: in Texas, you know, old school guy was able to
- 28:06Speaker 4: to win a World Series in that regard, I think
- 28:10Speaker 4: that was kind of a you know, you know, like
- 28:12Speaker 4: you said the next Pat Murphy, I think, you know,
- 28:15Speaker 4: these guys are going back to an old school mentality
- 28:18Speaker 4: after what Boachi did. I think, you know, the Angels
- 28:22Speaker 4: are heading in the right direction. Is obviously the coaching
- 28:24Speaker 4: staff is awesome. Why wouldn't as a player you want
- 28:28Speaker 4: to come into that that locker room and just pick
- 28:30Speaker 4: everybody's brains that that have been around, and uh, you know,
- 28:33Speaker 4: I think that's like for players to have that coming
- 28:38Speaker 4: to spring training, guys that have been there, Guys that
- 28:41Speaker 4: have grinded, Guys that have to learn from those guys.
- 28:45Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's you know, it's it's it's awesome
- 28:49Speaker 4: for me. I mean, it's you know, these guys, these numbers,
- 28:52Speaker 4: guys are great, uh, to to put forth on a
- 28:56Speaker 4: piece of paper what you.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Expect or what the numbers are in certain situations.
- 29:01Speaker 2: That's all great, but.
- 29:03Speaker 4: Learning from people that have actually been in the game
- 29:06Speaker 4: and have gone through one hundred and sixty two games
- 29:08Speaker 4: is key, and you know, it's great to see that
- 29:12Speaker 4: they're bringing that back.
- 29:12Speaker 2: For sure.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I think there's room for both. We're saying old school.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I just I would prefer just baseball guys baseball men.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I think that it's this line in the sand of
- 29:26Speaker 1: you know, ex player, you know, maybe get off my lawn,
- 29:32Speaker 1: doesn't understand the technical stuff, doesn't understand the pitch shape.
- 29:37Speaker 1: So you understand pitch shapes better than anybody. You may
- 29:40Speaker 1: not know all of the terms, and there's new ones
- 29:42Speaker 1: being made up probably every single day, but you could
- 29:47Speaker 1: learn very quickly all of this stuff. I have to
- 29:51Speaker 1: ask Hankonger's been helpful to me. Sometimes they'll be hitting
- 29:54Speaker 1: stats and I'm like, what does that mean? You know,
- 29:58Speaker 1: and it's hard to hit rate and it's honestly just
- 30:01Speaker 1: pretty endless. And some of these things I wonder. I
- 30:04Speaker 1: think they're always looking for better ways to kind of
- 30:07Speaker 1: describe a player's worth or evaluate what he does or
- 30:11Speaker 1: doesn't do, And some of these things serve a purpose
- 30:15Speaker 1: war as a staff that I continue to be baffled
- 30:17Speaker 1: by because there's multiple ways to get there, so you know,
- 30:22Speaker 1: maybe somebody can help me with that.
- 30:23Speaker 2: But I want to talk about that. I'm not that guy. No,
- 30:27Speaker 2: I know you're not. I know you're not. I'm not
- 30:29Speaker 2: going to press you on that. I do.
- 30:30Speaker 1: You can probably offer an opinion on the condition, and
- 30:33Speaker 1: you mentioned that. I think that at least what I
- 30:37Speaker 1: saw from the best pictures that I faced, and usually
- 30:41Speaker 1: ones that got me out a lot after their starts,
- 30:45Speaker 1: they were out there, whether it was running polls, whether
- 30:47Speaker 1: it was running stadiums, they were doing distance running. And
- 30:52Speaker 1: I think in recent years things have shifted more towards sprints,
- 30:56Speaker 1: or maybe.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Not much at all.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I think the thought behind the sprints is and I
- 31:03Speaker 1: did ask to make sure that I wasn't totally off base,
- 31:06Speaker 1: but it mimics more potentially of the actual pitching, the
- 31:11Speaker 1: act of pitching, the stop start aspect in between innings,
- 31:14Speaker 1: and maybe a little bit more of the max effort.
- 31:19Speaker 1: But all I can say is that the best pitchers
- 31:22Speaker 1: I saw ran for distance, and I think that it
- 31:26Speaker 1: helps you mentally, you know, gain some toughness, and I
- 31:29Speaker 1: think the ability to go deeper into ball games you
- 31:33Speaker 1: have to be in shape you have to have your
- 31:35Speaker 1: fitness at a certain level, and it's a different kind
- 31:37Speaker 1: of fitness. But what I mean, what are your thoughts?
- 31:40Speaker 1: You know far better than me, But would you agree
- 31:42Speaker 1: with some of those things?
- 31:44Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I mean, like we kind of talked about earlier, I
- 31:48Speaker 4: wanted to feel as good in the seventh, eighth, and
- 31:50Speaker 4: ninth inning as I did in the first inning. And
- 31:52Speaker 4: the only way to do that is to get your conditioning,
- 31:55Speaker 4: long distance conditioning where it needs to be.
- 31:58Speaker 2: And you know, for me, the day after my.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Start, I would usually run if there was a good
- 32:04Speaker 4: city to run out outside and I would but usually
- 32:07Speaker 4: just ran around the concourse and I would do six laps,
- 32:10Speaker 4: and uh, you know g rich Garrett Richards would come
- 32:13Speaker 4: with me, or you know, some of the young guys
- 32:15Speaker 4: would come with me, and I would you know, push
- 32:17Speaker 4: them to you know, kind of get them to uh,
- 32:19Speaker 4: you know, buy into this long distance running thing. And uh,
- 32:23Speaker 4: a lot of them did. And you know, when I
- 32:25Speaker 4: got to like that sixth lap, I would tell myself,
- 32:28Speaker 4: all right, this is the ninth inning, and I would
- 32:30Speaker 4: sprint around the concourse just to kind of kick in
- 32:33Speaker 4: that cardio even more so. Uh, and even you know,
- 32:36Speaker 4: the day after that would be long distance polls. And
- 32:39Speaker 4: then the only time I really did sprints was the
- 32:43Speaker 4: day before and it was just you know, just kind
- 32:45Speaker 4: of get your legs going and and and uh, you know,
- 32:48Speaker 4: get them warmed up or whatever for the next day.
- 32:50Speaker 4: You know, didn't want to do too much cardio and
- 32:52Speaker 4: wear yourself out the day before you started, so I
- 32:55Speaker 4: would do my ten sprints just to kind of, you know, get.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Your body going.
- 32:58Speaker 4: But uh, yeah, yeah, I don't I don't understand. I
- 33:02Speaker 4: guess when you're only going for a third innings, you
- 33:04Speaker 4: can get away with doing sprints, but you know, if
- 33:06Speaker 4: you're trying to do you know, trying to get through a.
- 33:09Speaker 2: You know.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Length in the game, you gotta do long distance cardio, right,
- 33:15Speaker 4: I mean, it just kind of is common sense. I mean,
- 33:18Speaker 4: so yeah, it's kind of kind of weird to see
- 33:21Speaker 4: that kind of go out of the game. I was
- 33:22Speaker 4: kind of surprised by that too. When I sat in
- 33:24Speaker 4: the coaches meeting, I was like, wait, there's no more
- 33:27Speaker 4: running for pitching. It didn't didn't really understand why, but
- 33:33Speaker 4: maybe they thought that was leading.
- 33:34Speaker 3: To injuries, which is kind of nonsense.
- 33:37Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean.
- 33:39Speaker 4: It's it's something you have to do to be able
- 33:43Speaker 4: to get deep in a game. I mean you, like
- 33:45Speaker 4: I said, you want to feel the same as you
- 33:46Speaker 4: did in the first that you're doing the seventh thing, Dinton.
- 33:49Speaker 4: The only way to do that is is get your
- 33:51Speaker 4: cardio where it needs to be.
- 33:52Speaker 2: That's for sure. I agree.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I think also having command in a third pitch is
- 34:00Speaker 1: it's incredibly important. But not I mean you obviously, but
- 34:06Speaker 1: thinking back to Shurezer, Verlander, Kershaw, Felix, all these guys.
- 34:12Speaker 1: To be a premium major league starter, it's very difficult
- 34:15Speaker 1: to do it with just two pitches you had, you know,
- 34:19Speaker 1: by any count, five or six pitches. You added the
- 34:23Speaker 1: two seamer. I think that was something that you were
- 34:27Speaker 1: helped Scott Shields and Joel Peniro, at least what I saw,
- 34:30Speaker 1: they were able to help you with that.
- 34:33Speaker 2: There's a nickname for you.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Touched on it earlier, the front door two seamer to
- 34:37Speaker 1: a lefty. Do you remember what what you called that
- 34:40Speaker 1: or was there a name for that?
- 34:43Speaker 3: Yeah, we called that the old dick knicker.
- 34:45Speaker 4: You know, you just kind of skim it right past
- 34:47Speaker 4: that thing and bring it back into the strike zone.
- 34:49Speaker 4: I don't know if we're allowed to say that on
- 34:51Speaker 4: this this station or not. But yeah, we you know
- 34:53Speaker 4: the old the old two seam Dick Nicker that was,
- 34:56Speaker 4: you know, it was a Scott Scott Shield special and
- 34:58Speaker 4: he was nice enough to to teach that one to me. Yeah,
- 35:02Speaker 4: for sure.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Like that.
- 35:04Speaker 1: We can call it the Zippernick or whatever, but you know,
- 35:08Speaker 1: because it was, it was virtually the same. Every time
- 35:11Speaker 1: you'd see the guy's hands go out and you know,
- 35:14Speaker 1: he basically shift backwards, and you know, it was right there,
- 35:18Speaker 1: strike three. I don't there's nothing you can do with that.
- 35:20Speaker 1: It's very few lefties, actually, I can't recall hardly anyone
- 35:24Speaker 1: being able. Maybe David Price was the closest, and he
- 35:27Speaker 1: but especially if you set a guy up with a
- 35:30Speaker 1: change up and then come back with that, it's a
- 35:33Speaker 1: lethal combo. And I think that's especially why during day games,
- 35:39Speaker 1: if we were playing a day game at Angels Stadium,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you were out there for a lot of them, and
- 35:45Speaker 1: I mean we were winning. That's that's all I know.
- 35:48Speaker 1: We were winning those games. We were I mean that
- 35:50Speaker 1: was a mentality to it. A compliment to you, is
- 35:53Speaker 1: what I'm trying to get at. When you took the mound.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I expected to win as as a teammate. It didn't
- 36:00Speaker 1: always play out that way, but that is what you're
- 36:03Speaker 1: looking for in an ace of a staff, and if
- 36:06Speaker 1: you can have more than one guy. And I think
- 36:09Speaker 1: we were very you know, spoiled in that regard Dan
- 36:13Speaker 1: Granky having all three at once. CJ came into the
- 36:16Speaker 1: mix as well. In hindsight, I kind of scratched my
- 36:21Speaker 1: head at least for twenty eleven twenty twelve, how we
- 36:25Speaker 1: weren't able to do a little bit more. But the
- 36:27Speaker 1: Texas Rangers were absolute juggernaut with their offense, and that
- 36:32Speaker 1: was before the addition of some of these extra playoff teams,
- 36:35Speaker 1: so we didn't have that luxury. But we had some
- 36:38Speaker 1: good teams, and you know, you do the best you
- 36:41Speaker 1: can and you have to live with it. But I
- 36:43Speaker 1: would have loved to give it a little more of
- 36:45Speaker 1: a run because I think in a playoff series, especially
- 36:47Speaker 1: three games or so, you know, with you and Dan
- 36:51Speaker 1: and you know, somebody else, potentially it's a lethal combo.
- 36:54Speaker 1: You're going to, you know, you guys, maybe give up
- 36:57Speaker 1: a couple of runs and hopefully our offense could score
- 37:00Speaker 1: a few and you know, it's a what if. But
- 37:03Speaker 1: I wanted to ask you about the no hitter briefly.
- 37:08Speaker 1: I know, as a defensive player I played behind Irvans
- 37:11Speaker 1: as well. His was a little I'm not going to
- 37:14Speaker 1: say clunk here. There was a little more traffic on
- 37:15Speaker 1: the basis. Yours was incredibly clean. Can you talk about
- 37:21Speaker 1: that just a little bit. I know you have in
- 37:22Speaker 1: the past, but and maybe how much confidence, the extra
- 37:26Speaker 1: confidence you would have had looking over at third base
- 37:28Speaker 1: and seeing who was out there.
- 37:31Speaker 4: Well, I there's no way that I would have been
- 37:33Speaker 4: able to throw no hitter without you at third base.
- 37:35Speaker 3: There, There's no doubt about that, that's for sure.
- 37:37Speaker 4: I mean, he made some unbelievable plays over there, buddy,
- 37:39Speaker 4: for not ever playing over there.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I made one and I didn't which one, Which one?
- 37:45Speaker 2: Which one? Jamie Carroll bunt.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Okay, the bunt okay, I was gonna say that. But
- 37:50Speaker 4: a couple of pop flies.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, pop up's great. I pressed on this too.
- 37:55Speaker 2: I had to.
- 37:56Speaker 1: I mean, I've wondered forever. I asked, you know, and
- 37:58Speaker 1: I think so gave a very polite answer. But I mean,
- 38:03Speaker 1: I know I was sitting there for about the fit
- 38:05Speaker 1: and I had lost track actually candidly that it wasn't
- 38:09Speaker 1: a perfect game. I thought it was a perfect game
- 38:11Speaker 1: for at least in any or two longer than it,
- 38:14Speaker 1: so that I was literally terrified. I'm like, not only
- 38:16Speaker 1: can I not boot this? I mean, I you don't
- 38:20Speaker 1: want to be the guy on defense. It's it really
- 38:22Speaker 1: is nerve wracking. You don't want to mess it up.
- 38:24Speaker 1: And I know I kept looking over my shoulder. I've
- 38:27Speaker 1: said it before, but where the hell is Kayaspo? Fifth inning?
- 38:30Speaker 1: You know, where is he? Seventh inning? And this is
- 38:33Speaker 1: like not even funny anymore. Where is he?
- 38:35Speaker 2: Like?
- 38:36Speaker 1: And then the ninth inning, and I just remember looking
- 38:38Speaker 1: and I was like, okay, you know, and I went out.
- 38:42Speaker 3: There, you're hot, You're doing a great job.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Over there.
- 38:44Speaker 3: They're confidence in you. I had confidence that the.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Bat was contributing. But we'll get back to mainly, what
- 38:53Speaker 1: are the thoughts though going through your head? I know
- 38:54Speaker 1: you're focused on the game, but you know, are there
- 38:58Speaker 1: nerves involved in something like that on your side?
- 39:02Speaker 2: Uh? You know going into it?
- 39:04Speaker 4: Which is I've always said this too, is had I
- 39:07Speaker 4: had a good session in the bullpen prior to the game,
- 39:11Speaker 4: which doesn't always usually translate.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Into the game.
- 39:15Speaker 4: It's almost like you want to not have a good
- 39:17Speaker 4: session and then going to the I don't know, it's
- 39:20Speaker 4: just kind of what my mindset was. So I was
- 39:23Speaker 4: nervous going into the game because I had a good
- 39:26Speaker 4: bullpen session before and but it was one of those
- 39:29Speaker 4: rare games where the the location and everything kind of
- 39:34Speaker 4: translated into the game too. And you know it's you
- 39:38Speaker 4: never expect I mean never. I mean, first of all,
- 39:40Speaker 4: getting to the big leagues and pitching the league is
- 39:42Speaker 4: one thing, and then trying to throwing a no hitter
- 39:45Speaker 4: is I mean, you never think that's gonna happen, obviously, right,
- 39:48Speaker 4: and and.
- 39:49Speaker 2: The stars have to line and it did.
- 39:52Speaker 4: There's guys making great plays like yourself and Tory Hunter
- 39:55Speaker 4: and Vernon Wells and and god. But maybe you can
- 39:59Speaker 4: remind me a couple more plays. But there was no
- 40:04Speaker 4: nerves really until.
- 40:09Speaker 3: I went out for the ninth inning. It's like, you
- 40:12Speaker 3: don't expect anything to happen.
- 40:14Speaker 4: I think the crowd build up maybe in the eighth
- 40:17Speaker 4: and ninth inning kind of got you aware of kind
- 40:20Speaker 4: of what was going on.
- 40:22Speaker 2: But anything can happen in big league games, like a.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Broken bat hit you know, off the end of the
- 40:28Speaker 4: bat over the second basement's head or for you know,
- 40:30Speaker 4: anything like that can happen through a course of a game.
- 40:33Speaker 4: So I was kind of I wouldn't say expecting that,
- 40:36Speaker 4: but just knowing that I still had nine outs to
- 40:39Speaker 4: go or twelve outs ago, that anything like that could happen.
- 40:43Speaker 4: But when it got to I think when I I
- 40:45Speaker 4: think I struck out. Who was it span in the
- 40:48Speaker 4: first in the ninth inning?
- 40:50Speaker 2: I can't.
- 40:50Speaker 3: I mean, it's god, it's been what I can't believe
- 40:53Speaker 3: it's been eight ten, ninth what is twenty twelve?
- 40:57Speaker 2: Good lord?
- 40:58Speaker 3: Fourteen years ago?
- 41:00Speaker 4: But you know, going out for the ninth inning and
- 41:02Speaker 4: the crowd hyped up, and then once you get that
- 41:04Speaker 4: first out, you're like, oh man, this this, I mean this,
- 41:07Speaker 4: this might happen. Uh you know, you get the second,
- 41:11Speaker 4: you get the second out, and then uh uh you know,
- 41:15Speaker 4: the the third guy comes up the bat and I'm
- 41:18Speaker 4: thinking he's gonna take first pitch, so I just throw
- 41:20Speaker 4: him a cookie down the middle, and I think it
- 41:22Speaker 4: was Alex Casill or something.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Yeah angels, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 41:30Speaker 4: He flew out to Tory and no better guy to
- 41:32Speaker 4: hit it to it for the last out than Tory.
- 41:34Speaker 4: But I literally threw him just like a cookie because
- 41:37Speaker 4: I thought he was going.
- 41:38Speaker 3: To take the first pitch and he went and took
- 41:40Speaker 3: a big hack at it.
- 41:41Speaker 4: And luckily it was nighttime and the you know, the
- 41:44Speaker 4: the fog good rolled in a little bit, but he
- 41:45Speaker 4: got it pretty good.
- 41:46Speaker 2: It kind of felt like he got it off the
- 41:48Speaker 2: end a little bit, but still got a.
- 41:49Speaker 4: Good and uh, you know, Spider Man Tory Hunter out there,
- 41:52Speaker 4: ran it down and on the warning track and uh,
- 41:55Speaker 4: just jumping around with you guys on the field and
- 41:58Speaker 4: and you know, have my mom and dad in the
- 41:59Speaker 4: stand you know, it's uh, it was well, I mean,
- 42:03Speaker 4: probably one of my favorite moments of my career for sure,
- 42:08Speaker 4: but uh you know that and that and that's why
- 42:11Speaker 4: I stayed in Anaheim. My mom and dad were in
- 42:13Speaker 4: the stands every start, always made the track down from
- 42:15Speaker 4: seeing me, and uh, you know, you can't put a
- 42:18Speaker 4: price tag on this stuff, man.
- 42:19Speaker 3: It was.
- 42:20Speaker 2: It was pretty pretty.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Cool to have them come on the field and have
- 42:23Speaker 4: my wife run out on the field and and share
- 42:25Speaker 4: that moment with them and and with you guys, was uh,
- 42:28Speaker 4: you know, something I'll never forget for sure.
- 42:31Speaker 1: It was incredible. I cringe looking at my reaction, jumping
- 42:35Speaker 1: up and die. I think I have never been one.
- 42:38Speaker 1: I was terrified on the golf side as if I
- 42:42Speaker 1: ever got a hole in one, because it's it just
- 42:44Speaker 1: is not you know, not a good dancer and not
- 42:47Speaker 1: a good you know, all that stuff is always. But
- 42:50Speaker 1: you know what I do know is it wasn't fake
- 42:53Speaker 1: like I was. Legitimately, I think part of it was
- 42:55Speaker 1: because I was mortified the whole time. You just want
- 42:58Speaker 1: to really wanting it to happen for you and really
- 43:00Speaker 1: wanted to be able to, you know, make sure that
- 43:02Speaker 1: I could do my part. But you know, you just
- 43:06Speaker 1: don't see that stuff very often, and a lot of
- 43:10Speaker 1: guys go their whole career not playing behind one. Fortunately
- 43:12Speaker 1: on the offensive Saturday, I don't think any team I
- 43:16Speaker 1: was on was ever no hit. It was close at times,
- 43:18Speaker 1: and I see so many of them fall apart. You know,
- 43:21Speaker 1: in that ninth inning, You'll get an alert on the
- 43:23Speaker 1: TV or something and I'll turn it on, and you know,
- 43:26Speaker 1: you want to see a guy you take it and
- 43:28Speaker 1: you know, usually eight and two thirds and some CEE
- 43:32Speaker 1: and I single or something, you know, and it really
- 43:34Speaker 1: is go that far, but you were able to get
- 43:38Speaker 1: the job done. I think it's fascinating that you know,
- 43:40Speaker 1: throwing that cookie in there. I think that that had
- 43:43Speaker 1: to be the hardest hit of the game. I don't remember,
- 43:46Speaker 1: And that was one thing you were always excellent at.
- 43:48Speaker 1: You got you struck out more than your fair share
- 43:51Speaker 1: of guys, but you've got a lot of soft contact,
- 43:53Speaker 1: and I think that was.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:57Speaker 1: As a hitter, it's incredibly frustrating to go up there
- 44:00Speaker 1: and just hit wee wee dinkers against a guy. A
- 44:03Speaker 1: lot of infield popouts, a lot of you know, just nothing,
- 44:07Speaker 1: especially on pitches you maybe I think you're getting a
- 44:09Speaker 1: decent look at, but I know for you, and I'll
- 44:13Speaker 1: kind of tie it back. Your deception was one of
- 44:17Speaker 1: the hallmarks in my opinion, of what you did. You
- 44:21Speaker 1: did not give the hit or a good look at
- 44:22Speaker 1: the ball. I think the majority of really good pitchers,
- 44:26Speaker 1: you know, for those kids at home, if you have
- 44:28Speaker 1: a funky delivery, don't scrap it for no reason. I
- 44:33Speaker 1: think that you know'll watch the All Star Game year
- 44:35Speaker 1: and year out. A lot of guys with some weird
- 44:39Speaker 1: mechanics make it a long way and they do really well,
- 44:41Speaker 1: and part of it is hiding the ball. I'd assume
- 44:44Speaker 1: you'd agree with that that you know, velocity is great,
- 44:48Speaker 1: but it's only as great as you know what you
- 44:52Speaker 1: do with it. And if you give me a good
- 44:54Speaker 1: look at one hundred mile an hour fastball, you iron micish,
- 44:58Speaker 1: it means nothing to be able to I'm that up
- 45:00Speaker 1: with with ease.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, well, I got a question for you,
- 45:05Speaker 4: going back to the note hit or do you still
- 45:06Speaker 4: have that bottle of chrystal etched out or did you
- 45:09Speaker 4: pop it open?
- 45:10Speaker 2: Do you remember even receiving that, Yes, I do you
- 45:12Speaker 2: have it? Yeah, I have it. I have a you
- 45:15Speaker 2: have to put you on the spot. Did you open it?
- 45:17Speaker 2: Maybe hawk that on eBay or something? No, I didn't
- 45:20Speaker 2: open it. No, No, I just I didn't know if
- 45:22Speaker 2: you maybe opened it.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Well, I was gonna say, maybe pop pop it open
- 45:27Speaker 4: for the first kid born or something, you know, I
- 45:29Speaker 4: don't know.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Miss that, but no, no, that's something that that's like
- 45:36Speaker 2: pawn shop or something.
- 45:37Speaker 4: No.
- 45:37Speaker 2: I appreciate that. No, No, I didn't. I wasn't.
- 45:39Speaker 4: I wouldn't expect Yeah, No, I just didn't know if
- 45:42Speaker 4: you had it or you know, opened it or threw
- 45:44Speaker 4: it away or whatever.
- 45:45Speaker 2: I was just asking, Yeah know, that's that's all good?
- 45:49Speaker 2: Tell me?
- 45:49Speaker 1: Uh yeah, yeah. I picked your brain on everything. What's
- 45:52Speaker 1: the deal with with travel ball? I know you got
- 45:54Speaker 1: a son, and that's it's that age navigating the youth
- 45:58Speaker 1: side of it. Now, if you kind of wrapped your
- 46:01Speaker 1: head around it, is it different than when you were
- 46:03Speaker 1: growing up?
- 46:05Speaker 2: Oh? Man, we had way different.
- 46:06Speaker 3: I was coaching my son, my aident's with twelve years old.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Now.
- 46:12Speaker 4: I started coaching him when he was like eight or
- 46:14Speaker 4: nine in travel ball. I mean, because the thing is,
- 46:18Speaker 4: I was always a you know, pony ball guy, and
- 46:21Speaker 4: I was gonna put him through pony But the talent
- 46:24Speaker 4: in the rec league ball stuff is now is kind
- 46:27Speaker 4: of diminished because everybody's doing the travel ball stuff.
- 46:30Speaker 3: So if your kid is any has any kind of competitive.
- 46:34Speaker 4: Or as good at baseball or any sport in that matter,
- 46:38Speaker 4: you have to go to travel ball to kind of
- 46:41Speaker 4: you know, have his level of play keep up with
- 46:44Speaker 4: everybody else's. So, you know, I started coaching, helping coach
- 46:48Speaker 4: when he was like eight or nine, and you know,
- 46:52Speaker 4: did the whole Cooper's talent thing this last year with him,
- 46:56Speaker 4: and I had I had to stop because it was
- 46:59Speaker 4: just too much.
- 46:59Speaker 3: The parents were just killing it.
- 47:02Speaker 2: It was just man too much.
- 47:08Speaker 4: And and and the only reason I stepped into two
- 47:10Speaker 4: coach is because you know, these travel ball coaches, they're
- 47:15Speaker 4: they're first of all, they're getting paid to coach these teams,
- 47:18Speaker 4: a majority of them, which is mind boggling to me.
- 47:22Speaker 4: And uh, you know that I saw that these coaches
- 47:28Speaker 4: wouldn't teach anything and practices, you know, the no fundamentals
- 47:31Speaker 4: or where to be on relays and cutoffs.
- 47:34Speaker 2: And all that stuff.
- 47:35Speaker 4: And and when the kids didn't know what to do
- 47:38Speaker 4: in the game, they would get yelled at. And it's like, well,
- 47:42Speaker 4: you're not teaching these kids where they're supposed to be
- 47:45Speaker 4: or what they're supposed to do or any kind of fundamentals.
- 47:47Speaker 4: So how do you even get away with with coaching
- 47:51Speaker 4: this team or getting on these kids for not knowing?
- 47:54Speaker 2: Which was the most.
- 47:55Speaker 4: Frustrating thing thing for me to watch. So I decided
- 47:59Speaker 4: to step in and and with with our team that
- 48:01Speaker 4: we had, we we we it was you know, repetitive
- 48:06Speaker 4: infield stuff, teaching them how to you know, just teaching fundamentals,
- 48:09Speaker 4: teaching them baseball, and and uh, you know, we we
- 48:14Speaker 4: ended up, you know, having a good postion in Cooperstown.
- 48:16Speaker 4: It was awesome to see the way the kids develop.
- 48:18Speaker 4: But the whole travel ball thing, if you don't have
- 48:21Speaker 4: the right coach, it's it's it's just the money.
- 48:24Speaker 3: It's a money grab for these guys. I mean, they
- 48:26Speaker 3: make a living on it.
- 48:27Speaker 4: And uh, you know, my my biggest recommendation is for
- 48:31Speaker 4: these parents, it's just to find a good coach that's
- 48:33Speaker 4: teaching them fundamentals in between these games and and really
- 48:36Speaker 4: teaching them.
- 48:37Speaker 3: The game, uh is first and foremost.
- 48:40Speaker 4: It's like you know, and these parents it's it's it's
- 48:43Speaker 4: sad to see them think of these kids as like
- 48:46Speaker 4: investments because there's so much money in the game anymore.
- 48:48Speaker 4: It's like, man, it just boggles my mind. And I
- 48:52Speaker 4: you know, I don't like to think I know everything
- 48:55Speaker 4: about you know, the U sports part. But I know baseball.
- 48:58Speaker 2: That's all I know. I'm not a very small our individual.
- 49:03Speaker 4: When it comes to anything else, but I know baseball
- 49:06Speaker 4: and and know what these kids needs. And still had
- 49:09Speaker 4: parents coming to me saying things that you know, I
- 49:13Speaker 4: remember I was at it, you know, we were in
- 49:15Speaker 4: down at Huntington Beach, your neck of the woods and and.
- 49:21Speaker 3: A parent kind of came at me and and I
- 49:24Speaker 3: just took off my hat and was like, here you go, coach.
- 49:26Speaker 4: I don't I don't need to, you know, do you know.
- 49:29Speaker 4: I was like, I I'm sorry. I'm trying to do
- 49:32Speaker 4: the best I can for these kids. And and if
- 49:34Speaker 4: you think you know better, then you can go coach
- 49:36Speaker 4: a team. But it just got it got a little
- 49:39Speaker 4: bit too much, so I kind of stepped away and
- 49:41Speaker 4: and uh, you know, kind of just coach from afar now.
- 49:46Speaker 4: I at the end of the day, he's still twelve
- 49:48Speaker 4: years old, my son, and I just wanted to have
- 49:50Speaker 4: fun still, you know. And it's like you just want
- 49:52Speaker 4: to prepare him for as much as you can when
- 49:55Speaker 4: they get to high school and and kind of let
- 49:57Speaker 4: them flourish from there. But uh, the whole travel ball
- 49:59Speaker 4: thing for me is just his craziness and and uh,
- 50:03Speaker 4: you know, playing year about round baseball is insane as well.
- 50:07Speaker 4: So uh, yeah, more power to them if they think
- 50:11Speaker 4: that's the way that they're supposed to get their kids.
- 50:14Speaker 3: To the next level. I'm just going to go about
- 50:16Speaker 3: it the way I know I did coming up.
- 50:21Speaker 2: So and we'll see how that works out. But yeah,
- 50:24Speaker 2: the whole thing is crazy.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Man, that's fantastic. You know, a parent telling you to
- 50:29Speaker 1: fly a kite essentially because you know, you just have
- 50:33Speaker 1: no clue what you're talking about. You did major in criminology.
- 50:36Speaker 1: I mean, yes, you don't have to expand upon that.
- 50:40Speaker 1: But you're you're you got more on the ball than
- 50:43Speaker 1: you let on. I know you like to play it awfully,
- 50:45Speaker 1: but you know you did, you know. I think that's
- 50:48Speaker 1: part of it too. Your experience and everything lends itself
- 50:52Speaker 1: so much better in my opinion, to either the college
- 50:55Speaker 1: level or pro ball. And I think that any team
- 50:59Speaker 1: would be really forty and it at least as like
- 51:02Speaker 1: a special advisor, you know, with three younger kids, you
- 51:05Speaker 1: want to be involved in their lives and present. But
- 51:08Speaker 1: I think that there's a huge void that would be
- 51:13Speaker 1: a great fit at the pro level or college. But
- 51:18Speaker 1: I think I know Troy Percival I believe is doing that,
- 51:22Speaker 1: But I don't know.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Man.
- 51:24Speaker 1: I just selfishly would love to see you being around
- 51:26Speaker 1: guys a little more often, being able to take guys
- 51:29Speaker 1: that you know, you've been there, you've done it, And
- 51:32Speaker 1: I am one hundred percent confident you could wrap your
- 51:35Speaker 1: head around any of this tech stuff, any of these
- 51:37Speaker 1: concepts that may seem foreign. You know, I think part
- 51:42Speaker 1: of the tug of war is you're not shared like
- 51:45Speaker 1: they're not shared with with ex players or with us,
- 51:49Speaker 1: and so it just kind of becomes something that like, man,
- 51:51Speaker 1: you know, I have no idea what they're talking about.
- 51:54Speaker 1: Maybe that's intentional they don't want you to know, but
- 51:57Speaker 1: it's not something that you couldn't adapt to, and I
- 52:00Speaker 1: love to see that for you. I guess that that's
- 52:03Speaker 1: probably about it. Spring training just started. We're going to
- 52:07Speaker 1: get more into that. I saw yesterday three guys are
- 52:10Speaker 1: already touching either upper nineties or one hundred miles an
- 52:14Speaker 1: hour on their first day of live BP seems like
- 52:18Speaker 1: a lot very quickly. Bremner, being their first pick, apparently
- 52:21Speaker 1: was up to ninety eight, so he looks healthy. Yeah,
- 52:25Speaker 1: you know, that would be a perfect guy too. I mean,
- 52:28Speaker 1: great college career, and you know he's learning on the fly.
- 52:32Speaker 1: He may make a push to make the rotation out
- 52:34Speaker 1: of spring. He also has three pitches, like I said,
- 52:37Speaker 1: which is huge, and you know, I'm rooting for the kid,
- 52:40Speaker 1: but being around somebody like you would be invaluable do
- 52:43Speaker 1: you do.
- 52:44Speaker 2: I don't know. I think I asked you, But no
- 52:45Speaker 2: plans currently to go out to Arizona. Uh no, I haven't.
- 52:50Speaker 3: Haven't got a call. I told him the call when,
- 52:52Speaker 3: you know, whenever they needed me to come out.
- 52:54Speaker 4: You know, I've obviously kept them aware that, you know,
- 52:56Speaker 4: like you said, I have three young kids, and it's
- 52:58Speaker 4: just tough for.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Me to kind of, you know, just bail out last minute.
- 53:01Speaker 3: But you know, it would be cool to do a
- 53:04Speaker 3: limited role something.
- 53:05Speaker 4: I told, you know, I had a conversation a couple
- 53:08Speaker 4: of months ago with with someone and you know, just
- 53:11Speaker 4: told them, you know, I can't do a full role thing,
- 53:14Speaker 4: but you know, if there's a limited, limited role thing
- 53:16Speaker 4: where I can pop my head in here and there,
- 53:18Speaker 4: let me know and and would be more than willing to,
- 53:20Speaker 4: uh to help out.
- 53:22Speaker 3: So you know, it's uh, it's like I said, it's
- 53:27Speaker 3: all I know.
- 53:27Speaker 4: I would love to be a part of it, but
- 53:29Speaker 4: you know, my dedication to my kids and my family
- 53:31Speaker 4: around I was first and foremost, and uh, you know,
- 53:35Speaker 4: kind of keep an eye on it from afar and
- 53:37Speaker 4: you know, whenever the phone rings, I'll see what happens.
- 53:40Speaker 4: But uh, you know, I wish them nothing but the best,
- 53:43Speaker 4: and and it seems like they're heading in the right
- 53:45Speaker 4: direction with with some things, so hopefully it it'd be
- 53:48Speaker 4: great to see this thing turned around and get them
- 53:50Speaker 4: back in the playoffs.
- 53:51Speaker 2: You know, I would love to see my my buddy
- 53:53Speaker 2: trout have.
- 53:54Speaker 4: Some more playoff, playoff appearances at the plate, and hopefully
- 53:59Speaker 4: they can, you know, hopefully some of these guys that
- 54:01Speaker 4: they're kind of taking a chance on pan out and
- 54:04Speaker 4: workout for him, and it's it would be fun to
- 54:08Speaker 4: see that the Halo's back on the playoffs, no doubt
- 54:10Speaker 4: about it.
- 54:11Speaker 2: I agree with you.
- 54:12Speaker 1: It seems like Trouty is going to be back in
- 54:15Speaker 1: center field. If you happened to see that yesterday, but
- 54:20Speaker 1: he said it felt better on the body right field,
- 54:24Speaker 1: I guess didn't treat him all that well. So you know,
- 54:27Speaker 1: he's at the point of his career, he knows best,
- 54:29Speaker 1: and he's gonna if he wants to man center field,
- 54:31Speaker 1: and the Angels are on board, I'd say, you know,
- 54:34Speaker 1: go for it, absolutely, like you would love to see.
- 54:37Speaker 1: I think he's going to have a much better season
- 54:40Speaker 1: this year. He seems in a good place. The I
- 54:43Speaker 1: don't know I just see a smile on his face
- 54:46Speaker 1: already in spring, which is really good to see. Looks
- 54:48Speaker 1: like he's in shape as usual, dropped a few pounds.
- 54:52Speaker 2: But you know, if they put this together, this could
- 54:55Speaker 2: be a lot better team. We've covered it.
- 54:57Speaker 1: The projections aren't all that favorable right now, but I
- 55:02Speaker 1: think there's a lot more talent than some people.
- 55:04Speaker 2: You know, may be aware of. Even you know this.
- 55:07Speaker 1: Let this most recent draft, I think is getting back
- 55:10Speaker 1: to what we knew coming up. Some really good players
- 55:14Speaker 1: with high upside. They're going to need some help, you know,
- 55:17Speaker 1: kind of honing it in. But building that farm system
- 55:20Speaker 1: back is a huge thing. We won't get into it
- 55:23Speaker 1: too much, but I know that you concur I've heard
- 55:26Speaker 1: you say that, you know a staple of when we
- 55:29Speaker 1: were coming up as a strong farm and I believe
- 55:30Speaker 1: that is going to be huge for them as well.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Have you last question and then we'll let you you go.
- 55:36Speaker 1: Did you get a chance to look at Trout National
- 55:38Speaker 1: Golf Course in person? If you got to play it yet?
- 55:42Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 55:42Speaker 4: I was gonna wear my hat on here too, but
- 55:45Speaker 4: I decided to look nice for you and do my
- 55:46Speaker 4: hair for the first time in a couple of yeah, yeah,
- 55:50Speaker 4: you're welcome.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I did. I went to the.
- 55:55Speaker 4: Opening weekend. I think that was the October they opened
- 55:58Speaker 4: it up. That it wasn't fully done. The course was
- 56:00Speaker 4: done and the conversations were done, and we went out
- 56:04Speaker 4: there in October and checked it out, me Jason Vargas,
- 56:09Speaker 4: Mustakas when all went out there, and it is it is.
- 56:15Speaker 3: They didn't cut any corners, that's for sure.
- 56:17Speaker 4: And you know, we went out there when it was
- 56:19Speaker 4: dirt and walked around with Tiger Woods and and Trout
- 56:23Speaker 4: when they were kind of going through it, and got
- 56:24Speaker 4: to meet Tiger, which is I don't get starstruck too
- 56:27Speaker 4: oft theen, but shaking Tiger's hand, I kind of. It
- 56:31Speaker 4: was the first time I've ever introduced myself as Jared Weaver.
- 56:34Speaker 4: I did the double name, which I am am so
- 56:37Speaker 4: embarrassed for, but I was. I was really nervous to
- 56:42Speaker 4: meet him. Like I said, I think Kobe Bryant's the
- 56:44Speaker 4: other one. When he came into the clubhouse and then
- 56:47Speaker 4: Tiger Woods was second, I was like, wow, you know,
- 56:49Speaker 4: he's just I mean, I saw him from the beginning
- 56:51Speaker 4: of his career. So but anyways, yeah, Trout National is
- 56:54Speaker 4: going to be something special and honored to be a
- 56:56Speaker 4: part of it, Honored to you know, have trout reach
- 57:00Speaker 4: out and ask if.
- 57:01Speaker 2: I wanted to be a member and and and whatnot.
- 57:03Speaker 4: So, uh, you're gonna you're gonna get off your wallet
- 57:06Speaker 4: and join up there?
- 57:08Speaker 2: Or what are you thinking?
- 57:09Speaker 1: It might be a window shopper, to be honest with you,
- 57:13Speaker 1: watch from Afar Moustak, just make it more than twelve holes.
- 57:17Speaker 2: When he was there, could he carve that out or
- 57:19Speaker 2: was the normal for him? Yeah?
- 57:22Speaker 4: He was, he was, and well he's got four kids
- 57:24Speaker 4: at home, so sometimes he's got a bell out to
- 57:26Speaker 4: help with the wife and the kids. But he was
- 57:29Speaker 4: there by himself, so yeah, he got through thirty six holes.
- 57:32Speaker 4: Ashley was which was which was awesome.
- 57:35Speaker 1: Yeah, sorry, sorry Moose, not a cheap If Tiger was
- 57:37Speaker 1: out there too, I'd hope that you'd be able to
- 57:39Speaker 1: post for that.
- 57:40Speaker 2: But all right, Well, thank you for coming on, man.
- 57:43Speaker 1: I know you're you're you're quite busy, but we appreciate it.
- 57:45Speaker 1: The fans will enjoy it and all the best.
- 57:48Speaker 2: Man, thank you.
- 57:50Speaker 3: Yeah, you're welcome, man. Thanks for having me on. Good
- 57:52Speaker 3: talking to you, Bud.
- 57:53Speaker 2: Awesome
