- 2:50start to this morning by having our monthly visit from our good friend Chris Witthrow
- 2:53from the Benny Keatham Shrine here in Charleston. Christopher, good morning, how
- 2:57are you, sir? Good morning, Good morning. I'm great. I
- 3:00am fine. So you got to meet Landau in the green room? Man?
- 3:02Yeah, A text is really tall. He is really tall. We're
- 3:06really short. I don't know which one. It is probably a little both.
- 3:08I'm gonnationed to both. You and I had talked over the weekend meeting,
- 3:12but I'm told that he wanted to meet you too. You'll be in
- 3:15the big time radio star and everything. You're too kind, but I'm glad
- 3:20you got here. You know the thing about Landau so I've literally I've known
- 3:23Landau thirty some odd years. Actually he's an l A guy. Yeah,
- 3:28he's an LA game and we anytime I have him on the show, we
- 3:31get into old stories of back in the old days. Dangerous for that,
- 3:36well, it can be, it can be very much. But you know,
- 3:38I think about him as is. Uh. He's not changed one bit.
- 3:42I mean still lives in Logan, Uh, tours all over the world.
- 3:45Went to you know, I had him in with Animal and he was
- 3:47talking about going to Dubai when he played in Dubai. Have you ever been
- 3:52to Dubai? Chris No, No, but I am planning too soon truly.
- 3:57I've got a hunting trip that's gonna take me hunting trip to Dubai to
- 4:02South Africa. But be La over There's going to be La over there and
- 4:05it's gonna okay, it's gonna end right, you know that late fifteen hours
- 4:10in Dubai. So I'm excited about it. Oh, you know you're going
- 4:13to jail. I'm not gonna lie to you go to jail. I'm kidding,
- 4:16I'm kidding. What are you go going on with the Shrine club man?
- 4:18We have a lot of things going on. Well, we just finished
- 4:21up the food drive. We teamed up with the Union Mission and we did
- 4:27a great job collecting food. You know, people were able to come through
- 4:30our parking lot and just kind of pop the trunk or say hey, roll
- 4:32down the winter come and get this food. So it was really convenient for
- 4:35everybody and we were really excited. It was our first time participating in that.
- 4:40And then of course, starting yesterday we started the tire of toys and
- 4:46we're going to be a drop off collection point for the for the toys here
- 4:49in Charleston, and uh, it's the same, it's the same gig.
- 4:54You know, you can drive through our parking lot we're gonna have We're gonna
- 4:58have some nobles out there on the parking lot collecting the toys from eleven to
- 5:04noon and then from four to five every day Monday through Friday this week and
- 5:11next to collect all those toys. And that's going to lead us up to
- 5:15our breakfast with Santa, which will be on the sixteenth, I believe,
- 5:20And that's going to be a really good opportunity for everybody to bring their children,
- 5:26grandchildren's, nieces, nephews out, have a good pancake breakfast and meet
- 5:30Santa Claus. So that's going to be really exciting. And how does that
- 5:35work? I mean, I mean they just show up, read ahead of
- 5:39time, come in, and you buy your tickets at the door, and
- 5:42then we'll serve you how much our tickets? Yeah, okay, we'll find
- 5:46out it's not that expensive. Okay, okay, it's a small donationally tough
- 5:53time pulling up all that information this morning. So Ryan didn't pay the bill
- 5:59on the internet like we told you to. That problem, But Okay,
- 6:01we'll get that information. Small donation. Yeah, and uh you know the
- 6:06kids that the little kids, of course they won't be charged for. But
- 6:11anyways, we have a waterflo in the north pole coming down to meet with
- 6:14the kids, and that'll lead us right into the New Year, which is
- 6:17a going to be a great party at the Temple. It's a Studio fifty
- 6:25four themed party with all the wonderful libations and music. DJ is going to
- 6:30be playing. Everybody's going to be kind of in a studio fifty old enough
- 6:35to remember studio fist. I'm not either, but you can look it up
- 6:38on the end. That's what I was thinking. I was a kid during
- 6:42the Studio fifty four days, so I don't even know if I was porn
- 6:45day good. Why do I get? Why do I give you airtime?
- 6:48That's what I want to know. I love you love the Shrine, Yeah
- 6:50I do. I do. I love the work that you guys do.
- 6:54Uh So the Studio fifty fourth thing, how did it all come about?
- 6:57Well, you know, we've done the Bootleggers Ball this year, We've done
- 7:00the Halloween Broomstick Ball, and we kind of try to pair our costumes or
- 7:06a theme with the cocktails and the music, and it's just a really authentic
- 7:12fun time and and it's just a way to raise money. You know.
- 7:15All that money goes to help keep the temple open and running so that we
- 7:20can do all of our good work for the children of the hospitals. And
- 7:25uh So it's it's a wonderful time. It's a great safe environment with a
- 7:30you know, with a great mission behind it. So we ask everyone,
- 7:35if you don't have any plans for New Years, please make your reservations as
- 7:40soon as you can. Uh and you can. You can call the temple
- 7:45every day and stop by or even stop by. It's a one hundred Charrier
- 7:50Street. But the telephone numbers every code three zero four, three four three
- 7:55nine four zero five, and you can ask them to to get you tickets
- 7:59for that New Year's Eve bash that we're having. So it's going to be
- 8:03a great, great time. And you guys just do so much during the
- 8:07entire year, not just during the holiday season. And we talked about the
- 8:11food drives, and one other thing I wanted to mention, I think you're
- 8:13giving up your parking lot for two big days on Wednesday the thirteenth and Thursday
- 8:18of the fourteenth, it's the fourth annual Charleston Police Department's Winter Wonderland Toy Drive.
- 8:22Absolutely, and they're going to be out there on the parking lot.
- 8:24And I had some of the folks on, David Paine and some of the
- 8:28other mass Toorgado on the show a couple of weeks ago talking about that because
- 8:31they kind of kicked it off at Holly Jolly Braley, you know, on
- 8:35the right. But what a wonderful event that is, oh yeah, yeow.
- 8:37And plus we have the Light of the Night over at the Gomart Ballpark
- 8:43as well, two million lights over there. But so next Wednesday the thirteenth
- 8:46and Thursday the fourteenth, that's the fourth annual Charleston Police Department's Winterland Toy Drive.
- 8:52And you guys again, as you do, I have graciously given up
- 8:54your parking lot for people to drop toys off there. We absolutely love doing
- 9:00that with them. Lieutenant Pain is a joy to work with the Charleston Police
- 9:03Department Fire departments. They are just anything that we do. They volunteer to
- 9:07help us too. So we are happy to partnership with the city and to
- 9:13events and we always look forward to it every year. And it's an absolute
- 9:16blessing if you look out on the parking lot and see all those kids out
- 9:20there having fun. And of course we had our trunk or treat event in
- 9:24October, if you remember, Lieutenant pain Fire Department, police Department, everybody
- 9:28was there to help us out too. So it's a great partnership that we've
- 9:33made over the years and we really truly enjoy working with them. And the
- 9:37Christmas Parade in Charleston is Thursday night, So what do you folks have in
- 9:41store? Well, we're going to have as many people in that parade as
- 9:43we possibly can. It's on a night that is a non meeting night for
- 9:48us this year, so we're really excited about it and look forward to participating
- 9:52and seeing everybody on the sidewalks and hopefully get the word out, hey,
- 9:58we're out there. We're doing all of our wonderful things that we do and
- 10:03fun things that we do to raise money for the children. So and now,
- 10:05are you guys making your rounds? And several Christmas parades in the area
- 10:09or you can't believe that the guys were in three on Saturday. I own
- 10:13three. We know the feeling here. I think, yeah, I was
- 10:16only in two of them. I helped out one of our sisters station in
- 10:20the Mountain, but I think our stations were in four this past week and
- 10:24it's just about as busy this week too. It's the it's the Christmas parade
- 10:26season. Unfortunately, everybody seems to want to have them all at the same
- 10:30time. You can't make them all. Well, that's true, and you
- 10:33know, we have different units and clubs out there. So we're hitting the
- 10:39Monroe County, we're hitting you know, Jackson County, we're hitting We're down
- 10:45in Logan. We always do the Logan Parade, so always a big thing.
- 10:48Beckley, we do the Beckley thing. So and then of course you
- 10:52know we have up there in that Mountain, EBow area, Somersville. I
- 10:56mean, we do a little bit of everything, and we try to get
- 11:01to every event that we possibly can just to get the word out about what
- 11:05we do and what our philanthropy is all about. So we're really excited talking
- 11:07with Chris with throw again for the Benny Ketdom Shrimp Christmas. The final time
- 11:11I'll have you on this year. You'll be back in the new year.
- 11:13I just wanted to take an opportunity to say hats off to you and the
- 11:16Shriners and everything that you do to not only make Charleston play a better place,
- 11:22but not to sound too hokey here, but to make the world a
- 11:24better place, because that's the whole mission of the Shrine Club. It certainly
- 11:30is. And Dave, we want to thank you and your platform that you
- 11:33have here and then you allow us to come here and spread the words.
- 11:37So thank you so much. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas, and I hope
- 11:41you have a wonderful new year and look forward to talking to you in January.

- 15:28You hit the building this morning about what eight eight twenty. We started
- 15:33you off with Steve Anam while you survived that, and then we sent you
- 15:35to Stephen Jenny, Stephen Jenny a little bit you know, more laid back,
- 15:39and then and then you got Robriel, who certifiedly insane that does the
- 15:43morning show on the Superstar Country KWS. But your holiday tour and you do
- 15:48this every year thirteen years. Is that what I heard you saying. Yeah,
- 15:52thirteenth annual, thirteenth annual holiday tour. And you know, you you
- 15:56travel literally all over the world. Chris Wythrow and I were talking about your
- 16:00trip to Dubai that you took. You literally travel all over the world.
- 16:04But for thirteen years now, you have come back to West Virginia. Yes,
- 16:08for a series of dates. Yes, Why why do you do that?
- 16:15I just think if I didn't, my grandmother would get up out of
- 16:18her grave and slap the crap out of me, you know, just not
- 16:22stay in true to my roots. I mean, and I grew up here,
- 16:25and I know what it's like not to be able to see, you
- 16:27know, the concerts of the famous people and things like that. So I
- 16:32just always said, if I ever got on that platform, but I'd always
- 16:34come back home, and you know, share that with my hometown folks.
- 16:40And so, you know, when I travel around the world and I meet
- 16:42these famous people and we do shows together, I always try to bring them
- 16:47back to the state of West Virginia because everybody can't go to Hollyweired, and
- 16:52some people don't want to go to Hollyweird. Let's talk about the charitable component,
- 16:56because anytime you do these, there's always a charity that you work in
- 17:00it. Sometimes it's a school band. I know. Of course you have
- 17:03your Christmas toy program that's the overall, but you're always given, whether it's
- 17:06Children's Home Society or something like that. Talk about the importance of giving back.
- 17:10Uh, the giving back part is just being a good you know,
- 17:12humanitarian, I would say, you know, just being a good person.
- 17:17And especially when you've been blessed with something, you always want to try to
- 17:19pay it forward. And that's just my way of paying for We're just giving
- 17:22back, you know, more or you know, as much as I take
- 17:29in. You know, we all want to earn a living, but there's
- 17:32also other people out there in need of help. And if I have that
- 17:34platform to be able to do that, I believe that I am supposed to
- 17:37do that. So and I think the blessing would be taken away from me
- 17:41if I didn't. Yeah, and again, I mean every show, it
- 17:45seems like it's somebody I know. A couple of years ago, I helped
- 17:48you guys set up a thing in Rohan County to help out that helping their
- 17:49musical department in our hometown, our collective hometown of Logan. You're doing something
- 17:55on Saturday night at the theater there to help out the Logan High Band.
- 17:59Yes, at the Coville jumber Real. We got a whole red carpet I
- 18:02have. Cameron is gonna be there. Cameron. Yeah, we'll talk about
- 18:06Cameron a little bit. But that's my point is is that that there's always
- 18:08some sort of a charitable component, including your toy drive. Let's talk about
- 18:12this young man, Cameron Lawston. He was on American Idol. He's joining
- 18:17me on the tour. You're playing Charleston Thursday evening, So we'll talk about
- 18:22that a little bit. But tell me about Cameron. For those who aren't
- 18:23familiar with Cameron Lawson, Oh, Cameron is a West Virginia native from the
- 18:29blue Fields down in Beckley, and he's an amazing singer. He looks like
- 18:33a young version of Smokey Robinson. I mean, so other girls are gonna
- 18:37love him, So you ladies better come out to this show. I mean,
- 18:41and he's phenomenal singer. He can hit it just about five or six
- 18:45different octaves. I mean, he's just a talented young man. So you
- 18:49know, once again, using my blessing to pay it forward and having his
- 18:55platform. I figure out I help out a fellow West Virginia. You know
- 19:00him off that show and he's basically just looking for a job or you know,
- 19:03any ways to capitalize on what he accomplished on that show. And how
- 19:07would you describe his musical style? Is he what does he do? I
- 19:11mean, I know on those shows like that you sometimes have to do a
- 19:14little bit of everything. You can't specialize, but what is his specialty?
- 19:18Per se? On the show he actually sun truly by Richie to Linel Richie
- 19:23right, So it's I mean, that was an amazing, you know moment
- 19:29for him and for line of Richie. I believe so, uh you know,
- 19:33just go on YouTube and watch his audition. It was it was It
- 19:37was kind of interesting, you know, to see him you actually singing to
- 19:41his his hero and his hero is kind of like singing the words along with
- 19:48them would have been like you had you had the opportunity to be able to
- 19:52sing to Frank Sin exactly if you can get the words out, I mean,
- 19:56because you meet your heroes, it could be kind of difficult. Now,
- 20:00you guys had your first show with the tour this past weekend in Clarksburg.
- 20:03I think, how was that? Oh, that was fantastic. It
- 20:06was a nice crowd. Cameron did great. Everybody loved and we had a
- 20:14lot of fun and a lot of special moments on stage with joking and you
- 20:18know, just a carmaraderie of being very weedy at times when you need to
- 20:22be. Yeah, and I'll say this about about one of your shows.
- 20:26If no one has seen you in concert, and I've seen you for seventy
- 20:30years now, it seems but but but it seems if you go to on
- 20:34Landau Murphy's show, whether you know number one, he's gonna do a little
- 20:40bit of everything. Now the Christmas is a little bit different, but a
- 20:41normal show, you're gonna do a little bit of everything. And you don't
- 20:45take yourself that seriously. I've seen you literally like stop a song and start
- 20:48it again because you're like because you and you and you laugh a lot on
- 20:52stage. And it's not like you're going to a formal black tie affair where
- 20:56you're gonna sit there like you have something stuck in your backside. You know
- 20:59you're actually going too and you're gonna have a good time when you come to
- 21:03a Landown Murphy show, yes, And I mean that's that's the beauty of
- 21:07it. If you're not having fun, then you're not doing it. And
- 21:08so I try not to. I mean, I believe in that, I
- 21:14take my talent very serious, the blessing of it, but just being stiff
- 21:18and all, you know, thinking that anybody else that's sitting in the audience.
- 21:22I just don't everyone to get that feeling. And so when i'm when
- 21:26I mess up on the song, yeah, I'm gonna stop it and tell
- 21:29all this didn't y'all notice that I messed that up? And they'll go yeah,
- 21:32and then it's a laugh, you know, and everybody gets that moment.
- 21:34Everybody gets to share that moment. And I was like, well,
- 21:37let's start over and see if we can get this right, you know.
- 21:38But it's it's those little things that keep me human and stop me from being
- 21:42jaded, you know, and those the things that I stay away from.
- 21:45I don't ever want to lose sight of who I am or where I came
- 21:48from or the way I was raised or you know, my roots. I
- 21:52mean, I'm a West Virginian for life, and I'm always want to be
- 21:56that way. And I don't ever want that to go away. So those
- 22:00little moments like that is what keeps me human. You know. It keeps
- 22:03me connected to you, It keeps me connected to the audience, it keeps
- 22:07me connected to my roots. And it's just, you know, I don't
- 22:10fear it. It's just it's a it's a stumble, just like any other
- 22:14human being doing a nine to five job anywhere else. If you don't get
- 22:18the papers copied right, you've got to go change the egg right and start
- 22:23over. It's the same thing on stage to me. So it's just like
- 22:26that's the way I look at it. I don't take it all like,
- 22:29oh god, I missed that lyric. And they need to you know,
- 22:32you know, people are there to have a good time. They're not there
- 22:34to I mean, they can stay man way. I've always thought about music,
- 22:37and this is just me as a music fan. I can stay home
- 22:41and stream it or you know whatever, and listen to it if I want
- 22:44it perfect. I don't want to go see one of my idols in concert
- 22:47and it sounds just like the recording. I can stay home on my couch
- 22:52want and I want somebody that's willing to take chances and I have seen you
- 22:56in concert do everything from Purple Rain to Mustang Sally. You told me a
- 23:00couple of years ago, you and I were somewhere and you tell me that
- 23:02you were listening to bluegrass. Yeah, I mean I did a song called
- 23:06Birds of Paradise by a little Jimmy Dickens with the car. You can look
- 23:10it up right now. It's on Google. It's on it's on YouTube,
- 23:12on YouTube. Yeah, you're doing a little Jimmy Dickens. Yeah, birds
- 23:17of parod Birds parodies your nose. I've done that song. Mayn Elephant kuresh
- 23:22you with his toes. I don't sing, but that's the next line,
- 23:26all right. Now, So you're in the capital city, Uh, you
- 23:29can be around the Charleston Parade and then you're playing at the Scotty Trite Auditorium
- 23:33Thursday night. Yes, you added a Kentucky show to the tour. That
- 23:36show, there's one in Ludlow Saturday night. It's back home for you literally
- 23:41at the Coldfield Jamboree and Logan, Yes, it is quite literally all where
- 23:45it all started. How many times did you and I walk on that out
- 23:48on that Coldfield Jamboree states to get Oh my gosh, I mean probably ever
- 23:52since what two thousand and three, Yeah, something like that, because I
- 23:56won I won Anson Crass Looking unty Archencraft fair competite. That was in two
- 24:02thousand and three. And then that's when I was introduced to all of you
- 24:04guys. And you didn't have the dreads then, right, yeahvas you did
- 24:10what? I had a short cavatis that's the name of that haircut. Short
- 24:14haircut like that that's tapered all the way around and not faded all out.
- 24:18It's called a cavadis. That's what they call. I learned something that's promo
- 24:22material right here. Landels just taught me something about about hairstyles. That's how
- 24:27much, all right, in all serious? How many questions do you get
- 24:30about your hair? I mean when people go men? I mean I went
- 24:33to uh, I went to this African braids place in Columbus, Ohio,
- 24:40off More Center Drive or something like that, and I sit in that chair
- 24:44and the African lady came over there and she says, what do you want?
- 24:48And I said, I need my roots twisted back down, just wash
- 24:52it, you know, and then twist my roots back down. She was
- 24:55like, what do you mean, twist your roots. And I was like,
- 24:59my roots, the roots, my dreads is this done? Grew out?
- 25:00And she was like, wait a minute, this is your hair and
- 25:06I said yes. She was like no way, I said, it's my
- 25:08hair. I grew. She's like, you grew this hell? I said
- 25:11yes, and then she was like, do little more then we'll go.
- 25:17And second, five other Africans came out of the back and then they were
- 25:19all playing in my hair like he's the boy. I'm like, what is
- 25:25going on? But they couldn't believe that I actually grew these dreadlines because most
- 25:30people are walking around which extensions yours? A natural? Learn natural? You
- 25:33know what it is. It's that Logan County cold water, creek water.
- 25:38It's that creek water, that sludge and stuff. Yeah. But I started
- 25:44growing these in two thousand and nine, in two thousand, in two thousand
- 25:48and eight, all at October two thousand and then I started, you know,
- 25:53twisting and twisting and twisting while I was sitting around thinking, and they
- 25:56just started growing and growing and growing. But a lot of people didn't.
- 26:00I mean, right now, I can literally go somewhere and somebody be like,
- 26:03is that all You're here, and I'm like, yes, like every
- 26:06bit of it. I don't understand how Meg can walk around with extensions in
- 26:11his head first of all, and so I mean, but to each his
- 26:14own, you know, But I just I would just be scared that somebody
- 26:18would pull it and fall out, Like I say, NFL players all the
- 26:22time. Right. I got a question here for you from the text on.
- 26:26Somebody wants to know who is the one artist that you would love to
- 26:29record with. That's probably a common question you give it. Who's the one
- 26:32that you would love to record And I'll kind of add to that past or
- 26:36present past it would be Nat King Cole, you know, Frank Sinatra,
- 26:41Ele Fitzgerald, Uh, definitely, Billie Holiday, but president I mean,
- 26:48and even I would say Marvin Gaye, but present presently, uh whodo,
- 27:02I'd probably be Michael Blueblaye, Beyonce, Tony Bennett. What do you think
- 27:11about the the whole phenomenon to Taylor Swift, because the whole country apparently has
- 27:18gone crazy. I love it Taylor Swift. Think she's she's done what every
- 27:25artist has attempted to do since the beginning of all of this. I mean,
- 27:30the artists don't get to make the decisions. They don't get to make
- 27:33all the money. She's she's she's broke through that thing to where she has
- 27:41all the power, all the control. She decides where she wants to go,
- 27:47how she wants to do it, what songs are being put out.
- 27:49So she's basically conquering the record labels. You know, she's conquered. She's
- 27:56done it all, and you got to give her her roses and her flowers.
- 28:00I mean a big round of applause for that, for it. And
- 28:02there's very so few artists, and so few female artists that can say that
- 28:07they've done it. And I can name one off the top of my head
- 28:10that has done that at totally de genre and that's Dolly party and Loretta Lyn
- 28:15and Loretta Lynde did too, But Dolly Parton is one of the can I
- 28:18tell you quick? Can I tell you a quick Dolly Parton story? Yes,
- 28:21good friend of mine owns a limousine service here in Charleston. Dolly came
- 28:25in, did a with her her Dolly reading thing that she does, you
- 28:29know, and everything, and so I hope he didn't mind me telling the
- 28:30story. So he picks up Dolly. This true story picks up Dolly at
- 28:33the airport to for event and is driving her back to the airport and he's
- 28:38talking to her, and her phone rings, and so she gets on the
- 28:41phone and a friend of hers are called about a neighbor of hers passing away,
- 28:47and Dolly would said, well, I'll make the fruit. I'll make
- 28:49the I'll make the cake or whatever it was, and I'll bring it over
- 28:52tonight. This is Dolly Parton and she's on the phone. She's on the
- 28:56phone saying that when she gets home from Charlson's Virginia to Nashville, she's gonna
- 29:00bake a cake or a pie or whatever it was and take it to her
- 29:04neighbor's house. She didn't have people do it. She did it herself.
- 29:07But that's just how she is. But that's a that's neither here, beautif're
- 29:12doing an autograph signing today, I think from noon to one out of Adam's
- 29:17Hallmark out of Dudley Farms. Those folks have been a big part of your
- 29:18career for a long time. Yes, you go in and that's just like
- 29:22a meet and greet, just let everybody see you and you know, get
- 29:26up close and personal with you and take pictures, you know, just mingle
- 29:29with everybody. So that's just another way of you know, keeping your feet
- 29:32on the ground, your head out of the clouds, just kind of staying,
- 29:37you know, feet from me on the ground. But those folks that
- 29:38Adams have been a really big part of because you're they're always excellent, excellent
- 29:42to you, whether it's here, they have the location in Huntings and you're
- 29:45always anytime you're in town. Now you also have a Holly Forbes is going
- 29:48to be I think on the show and Logan, and I'm bringing her to
- 29:55Logan because a lot of people didn't get to see her because we didn't do
- 29:57that showing Logan that particular year. And then I have an international act that
- 30:03I can't tell anybody about, but that's going to be an amazing show.
- 30:07And cam Run and Lost and WI also be there too. We got a
- 30:08red carpet, a backdrop. I hired a photographer, so everybody come dressed
- 30:15to impress and you can get your pictures taken and you can get all those
- 30:18we see all those pictures later on. Yeah, and that's and that's the
- 30:21show and Logan but again Thursday night. Now I've got up posted on my
- 30:25on my social media, the poster that's got everywhere that you're going because every
- 30:29year, and it's like clockwork, we'll wrap it up after this land out.
- 30:32It's like it's like clockwork. Every year when that schedule comes out,
- 30:34you start hearing from why why aren't you coming to Wheeling? Why are you
- 30:37coming? And this is the first time you played in Charleston in a couple
- 30:41of years. The truth is is that there's a lot of cities in West
- 30:44Virginia and you only have twelve or fifteen dates. And I think you and
- 30:45Burke and the team you do a great job of trying to get you in
- 30:48as many locations in West Virginia. And what I want people in West Virginia
- 30:52to understand as well is that you don't have to do this. I mean,
- 30:56you could be playing Vegas and you will be after the first of the
- 30:59year. You be in Florida. You spend a lot of time in Florida,
- 31:02you could be overseas, but you choose to come back home to where
- 31:04you still live in West Virginia to do this. That's right. I mean,
- 31:08this is you know, this is home and I love you know,
- 31:12the people of my state. I love my state and just being blessed with
- 31:18the talent that I have, I want to share it with all of you,
- 31:22know, my West Virginians. And so every holiday season I want to
- 31:26be as close to home as possible. So why would I go to you
- 31:32know, Las Vegas, or why would I go to California when I can
- 31:37just do it here and spread all that Christmas cheer right here. And then
- 31:41for the last up until the last week of December, I get to spend
- 31:45time with my close relatives, friends and family in La right in La Logan
- 31:52area. I told somebody one time, I Logan born, Logan dad.
- 31:55When I s Logan born, Logan bred. When I die, be Logan
- 31:59dead. But I wasn't born in Logan. But I mean you weren't born
- 32:00in Logan either, So you wanted Detroit, right, No, okay,
- 32:05but then you went to Detroit and came back. Okay, just born in
- 32:07holding hospital, which is not even a thing. It's a bungalow. Now
- 32:12it's a bungalow. It's a housing development. Quick text for you says,
- 32:15just t mend it just for minutes. That this young man has never forgot
- 32:17where he got to start. What an amazing talent and a young man.
- 32:21I want to know who the young man is. Oh you knew, Yes,
- 32:25you're younger than I am. That's all that matters, right, all
- 32:29right? Yeah, I still get id when I'm selling out Caesar's Palace if
- 32:32I put on a regular jog and suit or something and try to walk across
- 32:35the casino for they come and grab me like security literally comes and hold on
- 32:40to that man. Enjoy Joy. Why you can't Landel Murphy again. The

- 36:39Ryan Nicholson is our producer today, Angie Settle from health writer. It's
- 36:42her ng Hey are you good morning? Good morning? Did I hear you
- 36:45and Landau and there singing together? You don't want me to say you don't
- 36:50want that. As a person that used to do a show on a station
- 36:54where I used to work, you used to say they used to say they
- 36:57sung in the key of L. Yeah, well it sounds like that.
- 37:01Say that fast a couple of times. It'll make sense. But you thank
- 37:06you for being here. I appreciate you being here. You have reached out
- 37:08to me about coming on just to talk about kind of an update and thanks
- 37:12some people. So just give us an overall with health Right and the West
- 37:15Side situation, I'll leave it to you. You know, health Right we
- 37:17try to respond to anything in the community where there's a need. And when
- 37:22this thing happened with the gas outage on the West Side, Sheila Leftich,
- 37:27who's our site coordinator over there and also our diversity ECU and inclusion person.
- 37:31She just reached it out and said, you know, the people are really
- 37:35hurting over here when they didn't have gas and oheat and they can use their
- 37:39appliances and if your gas dependent. Our clinic itself was closed for several days
- 37:44because we are dependent on gas heat, and so we try to just you
- 37:47know, step up and say yeah, I do what you need to do
- 37:50and work. I'm grateful a lot of times you don't have all that red
- 37:52tape and you have to run it up the flag called we don't do that.
- 37:55So we were able to start, you know, cooking daily. We
- 37:58had great volunteers like Cheft Keaton come in and help cook in masks, and
- 38:04I got some kind of big numbers to share with Kay. Absolutely we've done
- 38:07today. As of last night, we've served three eight hundred and forty two
- 38:12meals passed out, seven hundred and sixty one heaters, five hundred and sixty
- 38:15two cooking appliance is, six hundred and thirty one electric blankets, one hundred
- 38:17and five regular blankets, and over one hundred and fifty sox gloves and hats.
- 38:22And we've been doing a meal service Monday through Friday, like five to
- 38:27seven pm, where we give all what supplies we have, and then doing
- 38:30on the weekends. My husband and I were there Saturday. They didn't want
- 38:32me to cook. We served Little Caesars pizza, but it worked. It
- 38:36worked. It was warm pizza pizza. As was said on the show when
- 38:39I had the mayor, I have to when you don't have a hot meal,
- 38:43I mean, you know, I mean, sandwiches will fulfill you,
- 38:46but it's sometimes you want that hot meal in the situation now and I can
- 38:50tell you, I mean, it's some really heartfelt stories. We had a
- 38:53lady in an automated wheelchair wheel over from two blocks over, had a strapped
- 39:00to the back of her wheelchair. She had on like flip flop house.
- 39:04Shees no socks, it's freezing, and she wheeled herself over there and asked
- 39:07us to put a portable heater in her backpack. She had a little meal
- 39:12and stuff. My husband ended up walking home with her carrying her stuff to
- 39:15help make sure she got home. But I mean, people, this is
- 39:19desperation here and what you know, not pointing fingers at anybody. But the
- 39:22reality is is even though that the gas has been restored, and a lot
- 39:27of people are like, oh, the gas is restored, what's the problem.
- 39:30There's so much water and stuff in the lines that are ruined. He
- 39:32ruined the impliances and stuff. So even though the gases turned back one I
- 39:37just had a little lady together with a bunch of kids on Saturday and she
- 39:39was just telling me, you know, she's in line, she's waiting for
- 39:43someone to come and inspect. But I do want to thank Governor Justice.
- 39:47He was amazing. They declared a state of emergency on the fifteenth. The
- 39:52very next day, he and baby dog. You know, I love baby
- 39:55dog. I do love me some baby dog. I like animals. Came
- 40:00over to health right. He deployed the guard and what a great group of
- 40:04men and women that have been there every day. They were there with us
- 40:07Saturday. Great, just great attitudes. You know, chopping carrots and potatoes
- 40:13and helping and carrying out heaters and doing all that. And I have to
- 40:16say, you know, I've been in contact with his office and his staff
- 40:21and very very responsive, and they have put you know, you know,
- 40:25they have actually put the footwork behind their word, and they've been there for
- 40:30us, so been there for the West Side community. A lot of people
- 40:32have stepped up as farm as volunteers and everything. But I can't say enough
- 40:37good. I got to stick my head in his suburban that night and baby
- 40:40dog was riding shotgun and he you know, nobody was there, Cameras weren't
- 40:45there. You know. I got to talk to him there and he said,
- 40:46you know, we're going to do whatever we need to do. We'll
- 40:49be there for you. And they have been. So we're really excited,
- 40:53you know that they've been there for us. And we have plans right now
- 40:55to at least through Friday, we do it a week at a time and
- 40:59just do it, you know what we can. We at least plan through
- 41:00Friday to continue that meal service and then we'll reassess because there's people still in
- 41:06there. We served almost two hundred meals last night, right and I think
- 41:08that's what again, you brought up a very good point, very important point,
- 41:12and we're talk about antie settle of health, right, is that when
- 41:14you hear this, oh, the gas has been restored. Yes, you're
- 41:15right, but everybody, it's this is not pre what was the date in
- 41:20October the eleventh was up the date that had happened or November. I'm sorry,
- 41:25okay, all right, so this is not November. First. I
- 41:29mean, it's not back to normal yet. And there's so many, as
- 41:31you said, appliances that have been ruined, there's so many, so many
- 41:36other things. And once they turn like they get the gas restored, and
- 41:39when they try to turn it back on, there was water that now blows
- 41:43up into the lines and went up to the utilities. And you think you've
- 41:46got little ladies that are shut in. If you think about even for the
- 41:50normal person, if your appliances, you know, went defunked tomorrow and they
- 41:53had to go out and buy brands or clients, is to just put,
- 41:57you know, fork up that money. And these are people that are living
- 42:00paycheck the paycheck, and there is a very big elderly population on the West
- 42:05side too. I think sometimes people kind of forget about that. Probably want
- 42:08probably one of the older areas, if not the oldest in the citlone to
- 42:12encourage anybody who thinks, well, you know, you know, we need
- 42:15to stop talking about this. They need to come over to health right between
- 42:17five and seven more like on the weekends we were there and did twelve to
- 42:21two. We did lunches and just sit there and watch and hear the stories
- 42:24of people. There's lines of people in a row waiting for plumbers and different
- 42:30people to come and inspect their house. There's many lines. So there's people
- 42:32still without appliances, without working heat that are just waiting in line and desperation
- 42:38to try to get things fixed. And what I loved, Angie, about
- 42:42what I saw and what I've read and what I've heard about the situation on
- 42:44the west side. A lot of these people that were volunteering also didn't have
- 42:49gas, they don't have the appliances there. I mean, they looked at
- 42:52their situation and this is what we do in West Virginia. They looked at
- 42:55their situation and they said, Okay, well my life sucks right now because
- 42:59this is going on in my house. But this lady has got it worse
- 43:02than I do, because she's elderly, she's in a wheelchair. This is
- 43:05a family that's got kids. Maybe I don't have kids at my house or
- 43:07whatever. They just kind of said they put their problems aside and want to
- 43:10help out somebody else. Yeah. I mean I can tell you multiple stories
- 43:14of people. I mean, Raphael, he's a great photographer. He was
- 43:16over there working Saturday with me and he was there. He's impacted by it
- 43:22and over there what's just you knew, just a positive, give back kind
- 43:25of attitude. And I think that's one of the things I want to thank,
- 43:29you know, the governor in his office for and everything. One of
- 43:31my favorite saying that sayings is is you know, West Virginia's helping West Virginias.
- 43:36That's what we do best. And I think that that's been exemplified in
- 43:39this And just just proud over all of our work, but really proud of
- 43:44the community and people stepping up and showing you know, what it is we
- 43:47do here in westerg And you said that we're going to you're going to continue
- 43:51the meal service at least through the end of the week, and you're taking
- 43:52it on a week by week basis. Now we're just you know, we're
- 43:55free and charitable clinic. We survive off grants and donations, and we have
- 43:59all the these other things going on at the same time. I don't know
- 44:01if you remember, back during COVID we stepped up and started doing COVID testing
- 44:06kind of on the fly, and we ended up being the number one COVID
- 44:07testing Slightness state of Whisfords. Yeah, I remember it welcome free tests.
- 44:12So we try to just respond, you know, as long as there's a
- 44:15dollar there, if we can break even or maybe lose a little bit or
- 44:17whatever, will be out there on the corner. Downd Cookies Takes, whatever
- 44:22text will be will be there. Angie Settle from Health Right, quick text
- 44:24for you says roll tight, Angie, oh, roll tied. That's where
- 44:28I got my doctor at University of Alabama. So as a Georgia fan,
- 44:31this conversation's over. We made it. We made it in the top five
- 44:36though. All right, Angie, I appreciate you, appreciate to all of
- 44:40the work that you folks are doing over in the West Side. Thanks for

- 47:46Jenkins is here, Jeff, good morning, Good morning. As I said
- 47:50at the top of the show, we just wrapped up to Super six and
- 47:52Wheelie. Now no rest for the wicket is they say the sports team back
- 47:55at it with high school basketball. First game on the broadcast schedule is to
- 48:00It's tonight. Yeah, we do. Uh, we do about three dozen
- 48:04games high school basketball games here on w c HS and and we've done that
- 48:07now for several years. And uh, and we you know, there's really
- 48:13good high school basketball in this valley, and we do, you know,
- 48:16we look at the schedule and we we do some of the best games and
- 48:20we get a lot of get a lot of the different teams on the air.
- 48:22So we start tonight with what's kind of turned out to be our traditional
- 48:27opener. I'm not sure what well I think because this is the this is
- 48:30the night that you not not everybody opens this season tonight, right, but
- 48:35always Poka and Nitro do. And so for the last probably four or five
- 48:39years, you know, we've done Poka Nitro to open the season, and
- 48:43we'll do that tonight. The game's at Nitro h seven o'clock tip. They'll
- 48:47try to tip it at seven. It'll be right around seven, little after
- 48:50seven. But we'll have that game tonight and then later in the week,
- 48:53yeah, and then later in the week. The first game of the season
- 48:55for South Charleston and GW is actually playing one another, so that's a big
- 49:00rivalry right at the beginning of the season. Then they play a second time
- 49:02actually like within a couple of weeks, so they get their two games out
- 49:07of the way pretty early. So we'll have that Friday night up at GW.
- 49:09So we've got a total of thirty two games right now scheduled, and
- 49:15we could we could add some It just depends. I mean, we've been
- 49:19really blessed with really good weather as far as getting the high school basketball schedule
- 49:23in the last several years, very few postponements or anything. And so if
- 49:28we do get postponements, we'll try to make the games up or slash some
- 49:30other games in. But we'll have Charleston Catholic on the air, we have
- 49:34Winfield on, we have Hurricane on GW Capital South Charleston. We mentioned Nitro
- 49:39PoCA. So we'll be at Saint Albans. So we'll you know, we'll
- 49:45do everything Canaw Valley team. You're to be honest, Hoovers are several times.
- 49:49We'll be at the Hoover gym. We'll be at the Hoover's new gym
- 49:52several times. So, yeah, we're looking forward to it. Let me
- 49:53ask you this real quick. We'll let you go ahead. Fred on last
- 49:55week and we know it's too early to tell because we haven't started, you
- 49:59know, really getting into the boys basketball season. Yeah, but what kind
- 50:00of an impact do you think the new transfer role? Yeah, that's going
- 50:05to be really interested to see that. I know several teams have multiple transfers.
- 50:09Uh and uh. I think it's going to be interesting to see because
- 50:14a lot of times in high schoo high school basketball day, you've played with
- 50:16each other. The majority of people play with each other. Now there's always
- 50:20transfers, but the majority of people play with each other through middle school,
- 50:23JV and into high school. Now, all of a sudden, you got
- 50:27this influx of a lot of new players from different places. So how is
- 50:30that, you know, impacted practice? How has that impacted you know,
- 50:35how would that impact the game? So that'll that will definitely be I think
- 50:39the teams that kind of figure that out obviously will be successful. All right,
- 50:44well, Jeff will be listening tonight. Man. I appreciate it,
- 50:45thanks a lot, look forward to it. And again, we got basketball
- 50:49coverage for you all season long, takeing you right up till March and the
- 50:52boys and girls state basketball tournaments here. I love it, love high schools.
- 50:57Just as the announcers say, the sweats so jeeves. By the way,
- 51:00Ryan Nicholson producers could be producing the game tonight. So he's got his
- 51:06his basketball attire, his warm up suit ready to go. Ryan will be
- 51:09producing two Knight's game. Dave Allen Show on five Indy Lives Brown to You
