- 0:08gratified by enjoy we are hoping that what we bring to your table today might

- 0:19glad to have you here i'm rowan miller and this is don patterson as always don
- 0:25how are you doing i think i'm a little silly today.
- 0:28Other than that, we're all right. We're all right. We're doing good. Yeah, I'm doing good.
- 0:32So am I. Okay. Well. Praise the Lord. Yeah. We'll get right into it here. You ready for the start?
- 0:39I'm braced and ready, yes. All right. This is actually the last question from Hillcrest.
- 0:45Oh, the Hillcrest month. That was a bunch of good questions,
- 0:47guys. Yeah. You should feel good about that.
- 0:50Yeah. So what does the Bible say about revealing clothes, like events like prom
- 0:57and banquets, things like that.
- 1:00Oh yeah. What does the Bible have to say about that? Well.
- 1:02Cause you know, it's prom season, banquet season coming up, whatever you want to call it.
- 1:08So Peter, I like Peter's explanation.
- 1:11And it's, it talks about it for women, but I'd say guys could think about it too.
- 1:17Your beauty should not come from the outward adornment. This is a first Peter
- 1:20chapter three, verse three, from outward adornment, such as braided hair.
- 1:24I mean, guys can braid hair, too, you know, and wearing gold jewelry and fine clothes.
- 1:29Yeah, fine clothes. Instead, it should be that your inner self,
- 1:33the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is a great worth in God's sight.
- 1:41For this is the way the holy women of the past, and this is in the women's context.
- 1:47Put their hope in God and used to make themselves beautiful.
- 1:50In other words, our beauty should come not so much from what we put on or take off.
- 1:57It should come from God. It should come from our relationship with God.
- 2:04There are certain people that are attractive no matter what they wear.
- 2:08And I think those people are attractive because of that which is in them rather
- 2:14than what they're wearing.
- 2:16And that's the way God's people should be. It doesn't matter whether you're
- 2:20male or female, we, we should be attractive.
- 2:25I mean, it doesn't mean we, we, what, what is that? It not gross out.
- 2:30There was a lifestyle, dark, dark eyeliner, black clothes.
- 2:37What was that? Oh, like emo. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:40And it's not like we have to make ourselves look bad.
- 2:44Yeah. I'm not saying that. I think we should work, look our best.
- 2:48I think every time we go and see people, we should look as good as we,
- 2:54But we don't want to put on big fancy rings and draw people's attention by what
- 3:00we're wearing or not wearing.
- 3:06Now, I'll be a little careful with this. I had a fellow come up to me in church
- 3:10one time, and he said, well, you need to make sure those girls don't show their bosoms so.
- 3:17And he was talking about this young lady who was showing a little cleavage on Sunday morning.
- 3:22And I said, so does that bother you?
- 3:27I said, yes, it bothers me. And I said, so is the problem hers or yours?
- 3:36It was good because it was somebody I could actually say that to.
- 3:40And it was all right. I didn't get thrown out of the church right then.
- 3:43Anyway, I think we have to watch that because yes, both sides are equally important.
- 3:50We shouldn't be displaying and effectively using our bodies to try to draw in
- 3:59the favor of somebody else.
- 4:03That's misusing the temple of God. I mean, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- 4:07That's 1 Corinthians 3, after 15.
- 4:14Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. So let's take care of them.
- 4:17Let's, just like any other temple, let's take care of it.
- 4:21Brush it up once in a while. Keep it clean.
- 4:24Display it well because it is there for the Holy Spirit.
- 4:28But let's not try to draw a devil out of his grave with the way we dress or
- 4:35the way we present ourselves. Yeah.
- 4:37Make yourself presentable, but don't bring attention to yourself. Right, yeah. Yeah.
- 4:43All right, so. Oh, we're shifting questions now. Yeah, we're shifting back into
- 4:47how we had them before Hillcrest, but. Okay.
- 4:52Hillcrest, thank you for the invitation. Thank you for the time there.
- 4:55Kids, maybe even faculty. Good questions. They were really good.
- 5:00So faculty in there too. Appreciate it very much.
- 5:01And if there's other venues, I'm opening a can of worms here.
- 5:05Okay. If there's other venues that you want us to maybe live into,
- 5:10a coffee shop or something like that, we're welcome.
- 5:13We'd welcome those invitations. You would, would. Yeah. Okay.
- 5:16And, yeah, send out the invitation.
- 5:20Our producer will go through them and tell us what's good to do and what we
- 5:23probably should chase away from. That kind of thing.
- 5:26Yep, we're open to most anything. We are.
- 5:30Basically, like you started out, this is for God's ministry.
- 5:34And so somehow we can help connect others to who Jesus is. Yeah.
- 5:40It's not about us. Mm-hmm.
- 5:43Yeah. All right. So we're going to go through a couple Old Testament stories here.
- 5:49Uh-oh. So in 1 Samuel 25 is the, you probably just know it right away.
- 5:56Nabal and Abigail, yeah.
- 5:58So I thought this was kind of interesting when I read it. It turned right to it. No kidding.
- 6:04Yes. Because I thought it was interesting when David kind of expected something
- 6:11in return from Nabal, even though Nabal never asked him to look out for his sheep and his goats.
- 6:18So if Abigail wouldn't have met David and his soldiers, would David have been
- 6:24justified in killing Nabal and his household?
- 6:28Well, I think David would have justified it. Yeah.
- 6:32Yeah. This is an interesting period of time because this is when David is running
- 6:37for his life, escaping from Saul, he has been anointed as king.
- 6:44I mean, that anointing by Samuel happened all the way back in chapter 16,
- 6:49very beginning of chapter 16.
- 6:51So he's already anointed for the ministry that's coming up that basically Saul
- 6:58is trying to kill him for, which talks about Saul's character.
- 7:04In that, then, in his running, he is still trying to take care of the country.
- 7:11And so he is taking care of guys like Nebel's stuff, even though he's not king,
- 7:16he's operating from the role of king.
- 7:20And so he is defending Nebel's out, his sheep, his flocks, even though he hasn't
- 7:27been asked to, and even though he doesn't have the authority of a kingship yet,
- 7:31but he's operating in that mode.
- 7:33Operating in that mode, then David thinks, well, you know, he's run off all
- 7:37these robbers and now he has a need.
- 7:40Nabal, would you please help out? And Nabal says, well, I didn't ask you to.
- 7:46Yeah, I didn't ask you to. So what do you think you're asking me to do?
- 7:52And he comes at a time. Who is David? Yeah.
- 7:58He comes at a time when it's sheep sharing time, verse 7.
- 8:03So they would have been anticipating money. They would have been.
- 8:08It's not like he's coming when he knew Nabal didn't have anything.
- 8:12It's as if the word comes during sheep shearing time.
- 8:18The question is, is he justified to ask?
- 8:21Yeah. Or would he have been justified if he would have ended up killing if Abigail
- 8:27didn't come forth and give him what he wanted?
- 8:31Abigail, God bless her, is a peacemaker. I think David's reputation's known.
- 8:37I think Nabal knew who David was. I would guess.
- 8:41Even though he said, well, I don't, why should I pay this guy? I don't really know him.
- 8:46I think, although he says, who is this son of Jesse?
- 8:51Sort of gives away, well, maybe I do know him.
- 8:56So he's basically, Nabal is basically saying, well, no, I'm not going to pay
- 9:00for this protection I did get.
- 9:03And so, would he be justified? Well, it really wouldn't have been a pretty sight. Yeah.
- 9:11And by God's grace, it didn't happen. I think the fact that Abigail,
- 9:18the sensitivity of Abigail in this, I think, speaks a great deal about this woman.
- 9:25Who would become David's wife?
- 9:29Notice that Nabal does die. But it's not by David's hand.
- 9:36So there's a sense of judgment here that's not David's doing, but actually has done.
- 9:42Let's see, he dies of, isn't it a heart attack?
- 9:46Yeah. Like Abigail told him what she did. Yes.
- 9:50Because he was drunk and then woke up sober and then his heart turned to stone.
- 9:56His heart turned to stone. Yeah. I think it was sort of a heart attack kind of thing.
- 9:59And so you got God's judgment on Dayball.
- 10:03David didn't have to do it. And I think that's a lot of times,
- 10:07just beyond your question.
- 10:09A lot of times if we, it's sort of like in Romans chapter 12,
- 10:15verses 9 through 14, I think it is, vengeance is God's.
- 10:23And once we're in God's will and we're in the center of God's will,
- 10:26we need to realize that God will judge accordingly.
- 10:31It's his to do rather than ours. And he does a really good job of it.
- 10:36And I think this is an example right here with Nabal that David didn't even
- 10:41have to worry about killing Nabal.
- 10:45God was going to take care of it because it was just.
- 10:50So David didn't have to do it. would have just, just if David had,
- 10:55there could have been a case made for it.
- 10:57But the bottom line is the case didn't have to be made.
- 11:00Case didn't have to be made because God took care of it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:05I'll correct myself here quick. It said that in the morning when Nabal sobered
- 11:10up, he told his wife, told him of these events, his heart died and he became stone.
- 11:15And then about 10 days later, the Lord struck Nabal dead.
- 11:19So heart turned to stone. Yeah. Hmm.
- 11:23Yeah. When we were talking about this story in Sunday school and it came up,
- 11:29I'm sure Josh wouldn't mind me sharing this because he does it.
- 11:33He said it in sermons, but when he...
- 11:37One time his neighbor was gone and it snowed and he shoveled his own driveway.
- 11:41When he was done, he realized it would be a good thing to do if he went and
- 11:45shoveled his neighbor's driveway.
- 11:47So he goes and shovels his neighbor's driveway and then his neighbors get back
- 11:51and come over to his house.
- 11:53And Josh is kind of thinking to himself like, oh, he's going to thank me for
- 11:57doing his driveway and maybe give me something, you know?
- 12:00And then his neighbor comes over and talks to him something completely not related.
- 12:05Not related at all. trouble in the snow and josh closes the door his neighbor
- 12:10walks away and he's like kind of disappointed like he didn't but that's a real
- 12:15experience yeah and so we were talking.
- 12:19Like with abigail and abel and david it'd be like if josh went over to his neighbor
- 12:24when he got back and asked for asked for some money yeah you know for his work
- 12:3050 for about drive yeah yeah Yeah, so it's interesting.
- 12:36And would he be justified in asking? Sure, he'd be justified in asking.
- 12:40Is that his heart intense? Well, that's not the Josh I know,
- 12:43so yeah. Yeah. But he could be disappointed. That makes sense. Yeah.
- 12:49All right, then 1 Kings 13, 11, with the new and the old prophet. Oh, Elisha and Elijah.
- 12:58Yeah. 1 Kings.
- 13:011 Kings what? 1 Kings, oh, there you go, your phone went. 1 Kings 13.11. 13, okay.
- 13:10And turning of pages. We should have music in the background. Pages are turning.
- 13:17Okay, yeah. Now, 13.11, right?
- 13:21Now, there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel whose sons came and told
- 13:26him that the man of God had done that day. They also told their father Is that right?
- 13:34Father asked which way did he go His son showed him the road The man took From
- 13:39Judah So he said Saddle a little donkey for me So what's the point?
- 13:47It's been a while since I visited this one I think it was like God told the The new prophet,
- 13:56Something And then the old prophet Told the new prophet something else And he
- 14:01listened to the old prophet,
- 14:04Even though God sent the old prophet to him To like tempt him in a way So then
- 14:10he listened to the old prophet That God sent And was And then he was killed,
- 14:15Oh Because he didn't listen to the new one And this is right after Elijah started Isn't it?
- 14:22Trying to think if the new prophet is Elijah you. I don't think it's identified here.
- 14:30Well, the bottom line of this passage is, listen to your source.
- 14:38The king, the man of God. So, you know, I don't have a good answer on this one.
- 14:42This is one I could go back and say, hmm, boy, I could use some studying on this one.
- 14:48Because this precedes Elijah and Elisha and old prophet and new prophet.
- 14:55So I would have to study this to have a good answer. Okay, yeah.
- 14:59So, like, kind of remembering it now.
- 15:02Like, God said you must not eat food or drink water from there.
- 15:08And then the old prophet came and said that he was sent by an angel,
- 15:14like an angel sent him, and he told the new prophet that he could eat.
- 15:20Oh, and then the new prophet was killed. Yeah, and then he was killed because he listened, I think.
- 15:26But he was lying to him. Yeah. Bring him back with you to your house.
- 15:30A lion attacked him. After, yeah.
- 15:34Hmm, ulterior motives here, do you think? maybe,
- 15:40the thing about the prophetic movement is that,
- 15:45you don't want to lose your reputation as a prophet because you don't get it back.
- 15:51And so there could be some competition going on here and the old man eliminated
- 15:58the competition this is a lot different than we believe in the here and now No,
- 16:06because we understand we're, as disciples of Christ, we're always investing
- 16:15in the next generation because we know we're not going to last.
- 16:19And we also know that if we invest early in others, that investment will pay off more.
- 16:25I mean, I thank God for the people who invested in me when I was young and those
- 16:30who continued to invest in my life as I got older.
- 16:33And I am who I am today because of their investment.
- 16:36This is not that.
- 16:38This sounds like the old prophet was, uh-oh, somebody's taken my turf,
- 16:43and so eliminate the competition.
- 16:46Because in verse 19, 18, the last of 18, it says, but he was lying to him.
- 16:53The old prophet knew what was right.
- 16:56But he told. The old prophet deceived him, yeah. The old prophet deceived,
- 17:00and that's not good at all.
- 17:03Yeah. And I imagine the old prophet got his judgment when he ended up in front
- 17:06of the Lord. At least he will when that happens.
- 17:11Yeah, there in 20 and 21, it says, While there was sin at the table,
- 17:15the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back,
- 17:19so the old prophet who had brought the new prophet back.
- 17:21And the prophet cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah.
- 17:25That's the new prophet. This is what the Lord says, Because you rebelled against
- 17:28the Lord's command, you did not keep the command of the Lord your God commanded you.
- 17:35But when you went and ate food and drank water in the place,
- 17:38that he said to you, do not eat food and water.
- 17:41Your corpse will never reach the grave of your ancestors.
- 17:45Wow. So then when he sat up his donkey and left, then a lion attacked him.
- 17:52So even though he's called a man of God, he was, like any of us can be, deceived.
- 17:59Yeah. And some of it was his own deception, some of it was the old guy.
- 18:03And we all have to be aware that, hey, influence can come from anywhere.
- 18:08So is this more of a, like an earthly human thing that the old prophet did that
- 18:16to, or is God testing the new prophet?
- 18:19Well, I think definitely was a test of the new prophet. Yeah.
- 18:22Where is he getting his information from and by what is he testing it?
- 18:27The old prophet, I think in his deception, that was very human.
- 18:32But in the second revelation, I think that was the Lord speaking the word.
- 18:37Both these guys really ought to be called on the carpet. One lost his life. Yeah.
- 18:42But it also illustrates how easily we can be influenced by our own emotions
- 18:50or, or, or by the deception of others.
- 18:54And that's why, you know, we, we talk and we, we work with each other.
- 19:00And, and I hope I don't have undue influence on you. I hope you check it with the word.
- 19:06And always work in light of what God's doing in your own life.
- 19:11That should be something that if you do receive counsel from me,
- 19:15you get an independent confirmation from God that, yeah, that's right.
- 19:19And in this situation, the old man had his agenda, if you will.
- 19:25The young man had his agenda, and both of them messed up prior to verse 20.
- 19:33And then in verse 20, when the Lord came to the old prophet and brought him
- 19:36back, when he came back, he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah,
- 19:41this is what the Lord says, you've been defiled.
- 19:44You've defiled the word of God. And that's a grievous claim.
- 19:49And so, yeah, both these guys will have their spot in judgment,
- 19:55I think. Yeah. Because of it.
- 19:58This is a hard one. Boy, you really, you really worked on this one.
- 20:01Finding one that, yeah, this story I had a little information on,
- 20:06but boy, I wasn't ready for that kind of question.
- 20:09Yeah. Then later. So we can count this up as a stump.
- 20:13Could we count this up as a stump for Don? That you, for Bowie's stumped Don?
- 20:19Got me in a spot I was not well.
- 20:22And it's one of the places in my Bible, there's no, see, there's no marks.
- 20:27You don't get many of those. Yeah, there's not many places in my Bible there aren't some marks.
- 20:32Yeah. You still knew a decent way to answer it. I knew some of it,
- 20:38but it wasn't quite the same as a lot of places where you take us with our questions.
- 20:44Yeah. So you want to try one more? Sure. This is enough for today.
- 20:49I don't know. That might be enough for today. Okay.
- 20:52Oh, that makes sense. We really do thank you folks for tuning in and having
- 20:57patience with us when I get tongue-tied.
- 21:00And do put your comments in the comment line. We do want to hear from you.
- 21:06Know what you're thinking.
- 21:07Send us those questions. Send us questions. We can use more questions.
- 21:10Rowan does a great job with questions. We could use more.
- 21:13And we just hope that somehow or another, this creates a vehicle that you can
- 21:17share with other people and gets more people into the Word. That's where it's really at.
- 21:24Thank you, guys. Yeah, you got something else? No, no. I should shut up now. Sorry.
- 21:31Thank you guys for joining us. We'll see you next time. Lord willing.
- 21:34Thank you for joining us for this podcast. Feel free to become part of this
- 21:37ministry by sharing it with others.
- 21:39Our goal is to help each other grow deeper in our understanding of who God is
- 21:43and is calling to us in our daily lives.
- 21:45Thank you again for joining us and may God bless your day.
