- 0:04Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time presented by
- 0:07Speaker 1: prize picks. My name is Bovani Jones. Thanks for listening
- 0:10Speaker 1: wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:14Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:16Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:19Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:21Speaker 1: have a guest join us from SI.com. I see he
- 0:24Speaker 1: got the horsepower, got the little horsey on his shirt,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Pat Forty. I know Pat Forty is also like me.
- 0:28Speaker 1: You are a horsey enthusiast.
- 0:31Speaker 2: That's right. It's actually Breeders' Cup this week. 0.0% of
- 0:34Speaker 2: the public cares, but that's a big event in the
- 0:37Speaker 2: horse racing world.
- 0:38Speaker 1: No, the thing is, I guess you've lived in Kentucky
- 0:40Speaker 1: now for who knows how long. It is one of
- 0:43Speaker 1: those things that everybody knows about, but the world doesn't
- 0:45Speaker 1: really care as much about, but it is the thing
- 0:48Speaker 1: for you guys.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. No. I mean, you can find people that
- 0:52Speaker 2: will talk horses, bet horses, breed horses, buy horses every
- 0:57Speaker 2: day all year round. They barely even notice that there's
- 0:59Speaker 2: football or basketball going on. I am not that person,
- 1:03Speaker 2: but those people exist.
- 1:04Speaker 1: To be fair to them, generally speaking, noticing football has
- 1:06Speaker 1: never been that big a thing in Kentucky.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Except this year those guys got the coach right.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It's unbelievable. Absolute grand slam hire getting Will Stein, who–
- 1:19Speaker 2: was the offensive coordinator at Oregon. And that's one of
- 1:21Speaker 2: those where you can tell when the place he's going
- 1:25Speaker 2: gets really good and the place he left falls apart.
- 1:28Speaker 2: He's a pretty good coach. Oregon's a disaster now.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Well, no, we're in one of those, that point of
- 1:33Speaker 1: season now where right now it's about the people that
- 1:35Speaker 1: aren't doing it. Like, I don't feel like we have
- 1:38Speaker 1: great feel good. Like, oh, wow, these guys are doing
- 1:40Speaker 1: so much better than we thought this year. But we
- 1:42Speaker 1: have a gang of you guys are disappointing us. It's
- 1:46Speaker 1: across the board. You guys are disappointing us. We'll get
- 1:48Speaker 1: a little bit later to like the ultimate disappointing for
- 1:51Speaker 1: people is, you know, when it gets to the place
- 1:52Speaker 1: of somebody getting fired. But Oregon is an interesting one
- 1:56Speaker 1: because nothing has gone the way people thought it would.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And we knew it early when they lost to Oklahoma State.
- 2:01Speaker 1: But to be fair to them, Oklahoma State turned out
- 2:03Speaker 1: to be better than we thought and might have the
- 2:06Speaker 1: best quarterback in the country. Now, that's the feel good
- 2:08Speaker 1: story if anybody like wants to get to it. But
- 2:11Speaker 1: with Oregon, what have you seen?
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's been a full system failure, mostly offense, which is
- 2:17Speaker 2: why they fired their offensive coordinator this week after scoring
- 2:22Speaker 2: a whopping 10 points against Illinois. Their last three games
- 2:25Speaker 2: have scored 15, 17, and 10 at a place that
- 2:29Speaker 2: was known for lighting up the scoreboard. That's not going
- 2:32Speaker 2: to cut it. So they lost both coordinators from last year.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Tosh Lupoi went to be the head coach at Cal.
- 2:41Speaker 2: That hadn't gone real well. And then they lost Will Stein.
- 2:44Speaker 2: It's going very well for him at Kentucky. They did
- 2:49Speaker 2: have a quarterback injury to Dante Moore, part of a
- 2:53Speaker 2: quarterback class that really, frankly, is falling apart if you're
- 2:56Speaker 2: looking at it from an NFL perspective. And they just
- 3:01Speaker 2: say they had Dylan Rayola as a backup, a five-star
- 3:03Speaker 2: former national player of the year, but he hasn't performed
- 3:07Speaker 2: terribly well. And it just– the whole thing looks adrift
- 3:12Speaker 2: right now. They've lost– the edge that Oregon used to have. They,
- 3:17Speaker 2: they had some off the field issues, got their top
- 3:19Speaker 2: wide receiver suspended and everybody's suddenly looking. Dan Lanning was
- 3:24Speaker 2: one of those guys who walked around acting like he
- 3:26Speaker 2: had all the answers and it looked like he did.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And now this year he kind of has none of them.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And again, It's not saying the bloom is off the rose,
- 3:34Speaker 2: but all of a sudden people are looking at this
- 3:35Speaker 2: and saying, was this a Wilstein operation or is this
- 3:38Speaker 2: a Dan Lanning operation?
- 3:40Speaker 1: So I want to put a pin in Lanning, but
- 3:42Speaker 1: make this point about Rayola. For people who don't remember this,
- 3:46Speaker 1: Rayola's father played at Nebraska and it was a very
- 3:50Speaker 1: big deal for Nebraska to get him, as is often
- 3:53Speaker 1: the case when you have a legacy player who's.
- 3:55Speaker 3: A really big deal.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Like if you can't get that guy, you get into
- 3:59Speaker 1: the old buddy, right?
- 4:00Speaker 3: Can we get anybody sort of situation? They got him. Well,
- 4:04Speaker 3: nothing at Nebraska's worked out like they thought it would
- 4:06Speaker 3: under Matt Rule. But it hasn't. It didn't go well.
- 4:09Speaker 3: He left.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And now I'm starting to wonder, did he just fool
- 4:13Speaker 1: us by doing that Patrick Mahomes cosplay that we talked
- 4:16Speaker 1: ourselves into believing that maybe he was Patrick Mahomes?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Well, you know, he put a lot of fancy passes
- 4:22Speaker 2: on tape. Doesn't mean he put enough routine good passes
- 4:26Speaker 2: on tape. And I think that's kind of been the
- 4:27Speaker 2: thing is, is he, can he just stand in the
- 4:30Speaker 2: pocket or even really even escape a rush and, and
- 4:33Speaker 2: be reliable and accurate all the time, as opposed to
- 4:37Speaker 2: in the occasional no look three quarter arm sidearm thing.
- 4:42Speaker 2: You know, there's a lot of quarterbacks right now who
- 4:46Speaker 2: are highly rated, who are really struggling and, And whether
- 4:49Speaker 2: that is they were overrated, it was bad evaluations, or
- 4:55Speaker 2: whether they were thrown in too quickly into the college
- 4:58Speaker 2: game and that maybe broke their confidence, like Rayola, Bryce Underwood,
- 5:02Speaker 2: some of these other guys, they were starters from game one,
- 5:05Speaker 2: freshman year. Maybe that was too much too soon. But
- 5:10Speaker 2: he has just not shown what people thought he was
- 5:14Speaker 2: capable of. One thing I've, you know, I've heard some
- 5:17Speaker 2: people say is that at this point in his career,
- 5:19Speaker 2: he doesn't move very well in the pocket, and you
- 5:22Speaker 2: can game plan to, if you keep him there, you
- 5:25Speaker 2: can pummel him. So just a lot of things where
- 5:28Speaker 2: the warts are showing up on quarterbacks all over the country,
- 5:31Speaker 2: but Raul has been an interesting one. I'll give him
- 5:33Speaker 2: credit for one thing, Bomani. He came in in relief
- 5:38Speaker 2: of Moore and started against UCLA, and he was the
- 5:41Speaker 2: worst quarterback you've ever seen. I mean, he was awful.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And he actually came in, did the press conference afterwards, said, yeah,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I need to be here. I should be here. You know,
- 5:50Speaker 2: I have respect for the whole process. I need to
- 5:53Speaker 2: own being terrible. He's been a little better since then,
- 5:55Speaker 2: but clearly not good enough.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Is there a question to be asked about pushing these
- 6:00Speaker 1: young guys to start? And of course, everybody wants to
- 6:02Speaker 1: go somewhere where they know they're going to play right away.
- 6:04Speaker 3: That's a big deal.
- 6:05Speaker 1: But I'm wondering if the fact that now these guys
- 6:08Speaker 1: are also getting paid millions of dollars and nobody wants
- 6:11Speaker 1: to pay millions of dollars for somebody not to play.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And I'm wondering how many quarterbacks are going to wind
- 6:16Speaker 1: up being broken like the Bryce Underwood thing.
- 6:18Speaker 3: It seems clear. He probably didn't need to play right away.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I think it's kind of a hindsight thing because I
- 6:24Speaker 1: don't think we looked at him last year and thought, man,
- 6:26Speaker 1: he just absolutely shouldn't be playing. And it looks awful
- 6:29Speaker 1: this year. And to be fair, there were people who
- 6:31Speaker 1: called it before the season that it was going to
- 6:33Speaker 1: look this way. But I'm wondering if this money is
- 6:35Speaker 1: going to wind up being. I mean, the NFL guys
- 6:38Speaker 1: are already talking about the fact that these draft three
- 6:40Speaker 1: straight draft classes they feel like are not going to
- 6:42Speaker 1: turn out.
- 6:43Speaker 3: The way that they thought they would.
- 6:44Speaker 1: But if this game is actually going to break some
- 6:46Speaker 1: of these guys, just because they're getting so much money
- 6:49Speaker 1: so early.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Sure. Absolutely. I think that's a concern. And I, you know, it's,
- 6:54Speaker 2: it's difficult if you're the coach, general manager, athletic director
- 6:58Speaker 2: of a team. And you like, if you go buy
- 7:01Speaker 2: a really nice car, do you want to put it
- 7:02Speaker 2: in the garage? You want to drive it. You want
- 7:04Speaker 2: to take it out and let's go. It's different with
- 7:07Speaker 2: human beings, getting them out there and throwing them in
- 7:09Speaker 2: a quarterback. And at 18 years, or 19 years old
- 7:12Speaker 2: being immediately named the starter, having an immediate $ 3 million
- 7:16Speaker 2: in your bank account, and having everybody expecting you to
- 7:20Speaker 2: play like a $ 3 million player from the jump, It's
- 7:24Speaker 2: asking a lot. And I think it does. It increases
- 7:27Speaker 2: the pressure on them, increases the expectations and increases the
- 7:31Speaker 2: likelihood that when things don't go right, they don't handle
- 7:34Speaker 2: it well.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Right now, you mentioned Dan Lanning and he did seem
- 7:38Speaker 1: to be fair.
- 7:39Speaker 3: It looked like Dan Lanning had lots of answers.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Like that is Oregon's an interesting job because he's a
- 7:44Speaker 1: defensive guy that took that job. But that is to
- 7:46Speaker 1: me like Florida West. They want points, man. They like
- 7:50Speaker 1: to light it up on the scoreboard. And it's a
- 7:52Speaker 1: place where historically it hasn't been that easy to put
- 7:55Speaker 1: together a defense because it's tough to get the athletes
- 7:58Speaker 1: there that you need to put together a defense. Like,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I don't know if people remember this, but when they
- 8:02Speaker 1: played for that national championship in 2010. They had a
- 8:04Speaker 1: defensive tackle that was 255 pounds. Like, you just had
- 8:08Speaker 1: to play a different kind of football over there to win.
- 8:11Speaker 1: But are seasons like these just kind of going to
- 8:13Speaker 1: be one that everybody just about has to deal with
- 8:16Speaker 1: every now and then because of the way the teams
- 8:18Speaker 1: are being constructed? Like, kind of like Calipari started doing
- 8:20Speaker 1: the one and done in Kentucky, and every now and
- 8:22Speaker 1: then you're going to have a dud. Krzyzewski had the
- 8:24Speaker 1: same thing happen to him at Duke, that when you
- 8:26Speaker 1: try to put these teams together on the fly, every
- 8:28Speaker 1: now and then it's just not going to come together. Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Real quick about that 2010 team, by the way. They
- 8:33Speaker 2: were playing Auburn. I went into that game like Oregon
- 8:36Speaker 2: can win. And then I saw them all at media
- 8:39Speaker 2: day in the flesh. I'm like, Oh no, they're too small.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I'm with you on that. But no, you're absolutely right. Yes. Look,
- 8:47Speaker 2: it is to a degree you're playing roulette. Sometimes the
- 8:51Speaker 2: ball bounces in where you want it to. Sometimes it doesn't.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And you make some decisions with personnel when you are
- 8:57Speaker 2: building and rebuilding every single year that don't work out.
- 9:02Speaker 2: you know, all of a sudden you've just, you've got
- 9:04Speaker 2: three guys that weren't as good as you thought they
- 9:06Speaker 2: were going to be. You get a couple injuries here
- 9:08Speaker 2: or there. You don't have as much depth because players
- 9:10Speaker 2: are moving around because they want playing time and things
- 9:14Speaker 2: fall apart on you. And I think more and more now,
- 9:17Speaker 2: especially when you come in with high expectations, one loss,
- 9:21Speaker 2: things start to wobble really hard. Two losses, everybody loses
- 9:25Speaker 2: their mind and panics and you can see a season
- 9:27Speaker 2: completely collapse. We saw that with Penn State last year.
- 9:30Speaker 2: We've seen it with Texas A & M and Oregon
- 9:32Speaker 2: this year. The one thing with this Oregon team, though,
- 9:36Speaker 2: retention was huge. They kept a bunch of guys. So
- 9:39Speaker 2: it shouldn't be happening this way there.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll give this to Lanning also.
- 9:44Speaker 1: He appears to be figuring out how you've got to
- 9:46Speaker 1: manage it in terms of the public when you deal
- 9:49Speaker 1: with this sort of losing because we've got other guys
- 9:51Speaker 1: around the country that we could talk about, one of
- 9:54Speaker 1: whom is the one guy that Dan Lanning has been
- 9:57Speaker 1: able to get a one-up on this year, which is
- 9:59Speaker 1: Lincoln Riley.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Right?
- 10:01Speaker 1: I still need to get to the bottom of that
- 10:02Speaker 1: Chris Brown concert. That thing, whatever that was, really affected
- 10:07Speaker 1: Dan Lanning. He was like, you could come to Oregon
- 10:09Speaker 1: or you could go to USC and go to a
- 10:10Speaker 1: Chris Brown concert.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Damn. Okay. Got it. But Riley, it cost.
- 10:18Speaker 1: $ 70 million to get him out of there. So it
- 10:20Speaker 1: feels very unlikely that he's going anywhere. So is everybody
- 10:24Speaker 1: just going to be miserable and unhappy?
- 10:27Speaker 2: I mean, they will be miserable and unhappy if he's
- 10:29Speaker 2: still there, I think. I'll say this. Saturday is huge.
- 10:33Speaker 2: They're playing an Ohio State team with no quarterback or
- 10:36Speaker 2: with a quarterback who's never taken a meaningful snap in college.
- 10:40Speaker 2: They lose that one, it's the last stand. You're out
- 10:43Speaker 2: of the playoff for this year. You're probably out of
- 10:44Speaker 2: the playoff already, but you're certainly out then. And then
- 10:47Speaker 2: I think everybody just totally gives up on Lincoln Riley.
- 10:51Speaker 2: $ 70 million is a lot. I've had some people say
- 10:54Speaker 2: USC's got more rich people than about anybody. They can
- 10:58Speaker 2: make it work, but that is a ridiculous sum. I'm
- 11:01Speaker 2: already promoting the parachute theory that Lincoln Riley goes to Baylor,
- 11:06Speaker 2: goes back to his home state, and just gets out. Now,
- 11:09Speaker 2: it would require him walking away from that much money,
- 11:12Speaker 2: as opposed to saying, just go ahead and fire me
- 11:14Speaker 2: and let me collect. But I would not be shocked
- 11:18Speaker 2: if he looks for an escape hatch before he gets fired.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Now, do you know if he has a James Franklin
- 11:25Speaker 1: buyout or a Brian Kelly buyout? Which is to say,
- 11:28Speaker 1: is it a, you got to give me my 70
- 11:30Speaker 1: all right now, or we pay it out by the
- 11:33Speaker 1: week like we would have otherwise?
- 11:35Speaker 2: I'm not sure a party at private school. So no
- 11:38Speaker 2: people haven't seen the contract, but that's a key distinction. Certainly.
- 11:42Speaker 2: It's like, when, when would the money be available? Because
- 11:45Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley's pretty young. He's not going to like give
- 11:49Speaker 2: up coaching.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:50Speaker 2: He's not going to sit out for like three years.
- 11:52Speaker 2: So if there's an offset or a mitigation in there,
- 11:56Speaker 2: it might make it easier for him to just say, look,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I'm going to, This is all going to go away eventually.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I'll jump now.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Yeah, because I have to– looking back on it, it's
- 12:03Speaker 1: crazy as it seemed when Penn State fired Franklin because
- 12:06Speaker 1: of the buyout. If your understanding was this is a
- 12:08Speaker 1: young man who wants to still work another job, then
- 12:11Speaker 1: it made perfect sense that you go ahead and do it.
- 12:13Speaker 1: When you do it with Brian Kelly, you're just saying,
- 12:15Speaker 1: we can't take this anymore, right? But Lincoln Riley's not
- 12:19Speaker 1: going to be Ed Ogeron, where Ed Ogeron got that
- 12:22Speaker 1: buyout and none of us ever thought that we'd ever
- 12:25Speaker 1: see that man do another day of work ever.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Like, not a real day work.
- 12:29Speaker 1: He's crazy. What are you talking about? I've done everything
- 12:31Speaker 1: I ever wanted to do. Riley, no, not at that place.
- 12:35Speaker 1: And also, this season has the potential to end in
- 12:38Speaker 1: full-on disaster for them because they've got Ohio State at home.
- 12:41Speaker 3: They've got a buy. They've got to go to Indiana. Um,
- 12:45Speaker 3: they got Maryland.
- 12:46Speaker 1: So that's a bit of a break, but then they
- 12:48Speaker 1: closed the season against surprising UCLA at UCLA.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Um, if that ends.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Four in a row on the way out the door,
- 12:59Speaker 1: that's a, As Dave Doran learned at North Carolina State,
- 13:03Speaker 1: they fire you when it just doesn't feel good to
- 13:05Speaker 1: them for you to be around. It's not fully about
- 13:09Speaker 1: your performance or anything else. They just don't want to
- 13:11Speaker 1: see your face anymore. And with Riley, it seems that
- 13:14Speaker 1: nobody wants to see his face anymore, and he's a
- 13:16Speaker 1: guy that's terrible at handling it when it's bad.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Terrible at handling it. That's the thing. Not somebody that
- 13:23Speaker 2: I think rallies the troops well, doesn't necessarily– handle it
- 13:28Speaker 2: gracefully with the public or with the media. And he's
- 13:34Speaker 2: just got to sit there and take it. And that's
- 13:36Speaker 2: the thing. And as you pointed out, look, what's happening
- 13:38Speaker 2: across town only spikes the level of unrest there. Bob
- 13:45Speaker 2: Chesney can come in and be undefeated and have a
- 13:48Speaker 2: quarterback injury and have a bunch of guys that came
- 13:51Speaker 2: with him from James Madison doing this. It makes you
- 13:54Speaker 2: look pretty darn bad. When Lincoln Riley sat there and
- 13:56Speaker 2: said at Big Ten Media Day in July, basically we've
- 14:00Speaker 2: got everything we need. We've got the players. We've got
- 14:04Speaker 2: the staff. We've got the support personnel. We've got the
- 14:07Speaker 2: NIL war chest. We just opened a $ 225 million building.
- 14:12Speaker 2: It's the nicest thing in college football. There's no more excuses. So,
- 14:17Speaker 2: I mean, it's now or never, and right now it
- 14:20Speaker 2: looks like never.
- 14:21Speaker 3: It's also hard to ignore, man.
- 14:23Speaker 1: He got there taking the path of a coward. He
- 14:26Speaker 1: had one of the best jobs in.
- 14:28Speaker 3: The country, and he was like, ooh, SEC? I don't
- 14:31Speaker 3: know about that.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And he thought that he could get all, like, offer USC,
- 14:36Speaker 1: I'm bringing Caleb Williams with me, and then they moved
- 14:38Speaker 1: to the Big Ten, and it wound up, he basically
- 14:42Speaker 1: took the job that he left. Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 2: He did, absolutely. And that, you know, it's interesting. I mean,
- 14:49Speaker 2: I think Riley liked being at Oklahoma because you have
- 14:53Speaker 2: one team you got to worry about, and that was Texas. And,
- 14:55Speaker 2: you know, maybe somebody else occasionally rises up. SEC, hell no,
- 14:59Speaker 2: I don't want any part of that. And then you
- 15:00Speaker 2: go to USC, well, I got Oregon to worry about.
- 15:03Speaker 2: That's about it. You know, maybe Washington occasionally, maybe Arizona
- 15:07Speaker 2: State or something, but otherwise I'm good. Nope, we're leaving
- 15:11Speaker 2: that conference too. And they start having to fight uphill.
- 15:15Speaker 2: And that's when he drops the Notre Dame game. Didn't
- 15:17Speaker 2: want to play the Notre Dame game anymore. Here's the thing.
- 15:20Speaker 2: This season was so set up for them. They had
- 15:23Speaker 2: a non-conference schedule of nobody, nobody, and nobody. They had
- 15:29Speaker 2: everything lined. They were not playing Notre Dame. They opened
- 15:32Speaker 2: with a long streak of games at home. They had
- 15:35Speaker 2: plenty of time to ramp up. And then they still
- 15:37Speaker 2: couldn't get it done. So this is just a full
- 15:40Speaker 2: system failure for them.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I had forgotten about them dropping Notre Dame, which gets
- 15:44Speaker 1: back again to people are into these things because it
- 15:47Speaker 1: makes them feel good.
- 15:49Speaker 3: They like playing against Notre Dame.
- 15:52Speaker 1: This is part of the charm of doing this.
- 15:55Speaker 3: And when you make those moves like that, man, you
- 15:58Speaker 3: better be right.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Absolutely. And he wasn't. That's the thing. The fan base...
- 16:05Speaker 2: is disappointed they don't have that game and you know
- 16:07Speaker 2: they all the excuses well it's another midwest trip in
- 16:10Speaker 2: the middle of the season and we already have to
- 16:12Speaker 2: do all these other things fans don't care they want
- 16:15Speaker 2: to play games that excite them they don't want to
- 16:17Speaker 2: play san jose state they want to play notre dame
- 16:20Speaker 2: so that's a trade-off that yes as you said it
- 16:23Speaker 2: better end up with like a playoff bid and it's
- 16:25Speaker 2: not going to almost assuredly that backfired badly.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Yeah we had uh rj young on the other day
- 16:31Speaker 1: and i was telling him my thing about usc as
- 16:33Speaker 1: a job where These great jobs are interesting because it
- 16:37Speaker 1: takes a different level of guy to get it done
- 16:38Speaker 1: at all of them.
- 16:40Speaker 3: LSU, you can win with a good coach, right?
- 16:43Speaker 1: Or even I would argue the first version of Saban
- 16:46Speaker 1: was a great coach, but it wasn't the version of
- 16:48Speaker 1: Saban that we later got.
- 16:49Speaker 3: It was different levels of it.
- 16:51Speaker 1: USC is a job that A good coach can do
- 16:55Speaker 1: okay there. Like John Robinson is a great example of
- 16:58Speaker 1: a very good coach there. Larry Smith, you might win
- 17:01Speaker 1: a couple of Pac-10s, but to really do it like
- 17:03Speaker 1: they want, it takes a great coach at that job.
- 17:07Speaker 1: It seems like one that only a good coach needs,
- 17:10Speaker 1: but it's a great coach job. And I will never
- 17:12Speaker 1: forget when Riley left Oklahoma. Let me tell you who
- 17:14Speaker 1: wasn't really sad about that. Oklahoma fans, they were a
- 17:17Speaker 1: little insulted and miffed by the timing of it, but
- 17:21Speaker 1: they saw, they kind of saw through that. And a
- 17:25Speaker 1: lot of what got blamed on Alex Grinch's defensive coordinator. No,
- 17:29Speaker 1: Lincoln hasn't had a good defense with any of these guys, right?
- 17:31Speaker 1: They tried to blame it on Grinch when they got
- 17:33Speaker 1: to USC too, but it's like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Some guys just can't get that part right.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that's the common denominator is, is He's had
- 17:41Speaker 2: bad defenses everywhere with a bunch of different coordinators. And
- 17:44Speaker 2: so what does that mean? That means you oversee a
- 17:46Speaker 2: program that can't play defense. So you can't just shovel
- 17:49Speaker 2: it off on, oh, this coordinator was bad, that coordinator
- 17:52Speaker 2: was bad. You systemically are creating a team, a program
- 17:57Speaker 2: that is not good defensively because you've probably given so
- 18:01Speaker 2: much emphasis to the offense. That's unescapable at this point.
- 18:05Speaker 1: By the way, you mentioned the Baylor job is maybe
- 18:07Speaker 1: somewhere that Lincoln Riley would go. I still– struggle with
- 18:11Speaker 1: the idea that that's a job that somebody would want.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Like I am, I am of an age where it
- 18:16Speaker 1: is impossible for me to believe that. And the guy
- 18:19Speaker 1: that we saw turn that thing around was Art Briles.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And we saw two things had to happen for that
- 18:24Speaker 1: to happen. One, a brilliant coach. And number two, that guy,
- 18:30Speaker 1: you had to be willing to do the things that
- 18:32Speaker 1: Art Briles was willing to do. Rule came behind him
- 18:34Speaker 1: and I think did an amazing job in getting that going.
- 18:38Speaker 1: But Aranda, who we all know is a schematic genius,
- 18:41Speaker 1: great defensive coach and all of those things, it wasn't
- 18:44Speaker 1: going to work there. And I look at it like
- 18:45Speaker 1: if you're Lincoln Riley, is that really a good job
- 18:49Speaker 1: for you to take?
- 18:50Speaker 2: Well, I think you can look at it two different ways.
- 18:53Speaker 2: First of all, you could say, hey, Matt Rule won
- 18:55Speaker 2: 11 games there one time. Dave Aranda won 12 one year.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Won the Big 12. And Bryles, now what Bryles did,
- 19:04Speaker 2: you don't want to replicate. You don't want to win
- 19:05Speaker 2: that way. But that was the only time it was sustained.
- 19:09Speaker 2: But you look at it and say, hey, there's a
- 19:11Speaker 2: lot of financial backing. Stadium's like 10 years old. It
- 19:16Speaker 2: looks good. There's players everywhere. If TCU can go to
- 19:21Speaker 2: the national championship game, why the hell can't we? So
- 19:24Speaker 2: on the face of it, sure. But again, is it sustainable? No.
- 19:28Speaker 2: That is proven historically to be really difficult unless you
- 19:31Speaker 2: cut corners to an alarming degree.
- 19:34Speaker 1: And has Lincoln Riley exposed himself as being a Big
- 19:37Speaker 1: 12 coach? And that's just the kind of conference for him, right?
- 19:39Speaker 1: A conference of offensive geniuses of many different types. Like,
- 19:43Speaker 1: I think the underrated thing about the Big 12 is
- 19:45Speaker 1: me and my guy, Alan Kinney, would talk about this.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Every time somebody would say they don't play any defense
- 19:49Speaker 1: in the Big 12, there's something to that. But also,
- 19:52Speaker 1: it was a variance of types of offenses, all of
- 19:56Speaker 1: them on the cutting edge of where football was going.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Or every now and then you have somebody like, no,
- 20:00Speaker 1: we're just going to run it down people's throats.
- 20:01Speaker 3: How about that?
- 20:03Speaker 1: Everybody had a way to go about doing it, and
- 20:05Speaker 1: maybe that's where Lincoln Riley needs to be. Just go
- 20:07Speaker 1: have some fun and put up some points.
- 20:10Speaker 3: No school in.
- 20:11Speaker 1: That conference has real big expectations. Any winning of any
- 20:16Speaker 1: of those teams at a high level is just kind
- 20:18Speaker 1: of sort of gravy, it feels like.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the exception is Texas Tech, but that's
- 20:23Speaker 2: also a one-man billionaire operation where, you know, he thinks
- 20:27Speaker 2: they should be winning national championships. But the reality is
- 20:32Speaker 2: it's Texas Tech. And in a state, even with a
- 20:35Speaker 2: state with a million players, Texas Tech's pretty far down
- 20:38Speaker 2: the list of where they want to go. So unless
- 20:40Speaker 2: you're just absolutely money-whipping them to go there. But, yeah,
- 20:44Speaker 2: beyond that, look, I mean, BYU wants to be good
- 20:46Speaker 2: at football, but they– have other things that they prioritize
- 20:50Speaker 2: probably first. And Kalani Satake, like, he could stay there forever,
- 20:53Speaker 2: I think. Utah wants to be good, but they're not insane.
- 20:57Speaker 2: So that, like, you just look at that league and
- 20:59Speaker 2: you think, it is fluid. You can get from the
- 21:03Speaker 2: bottom or near the bottom to near the top pretty quickly,
- 21:06Speaker 2: as opposed to being the ninth best program in the
- 21:09Speaker 2: Big Ten or the 11th best program in the SEC.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Under-discussed things.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Those folks at Utah seem to know what they were
- 21:17Speaker 1: doing when they forced the old man out, huh?
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 2: You know what? I mean, you'd love to get the
- 21:23Speaker 2: full 911 from behind the scenes. Did they see that? Look,
- 21:28Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham was not necessarily mailing it in, but just
- 21:31Speaker 2: wasn't quite as on top of it as he used
- 21:33Speaker 2: to be. And we've got this guy, Morgan Scali, who
- 21:35Speaker 2: we'd made the coach in waiting and really wants to
- 21:40Speaker 2: get in and start doing the job. And so you
- 21:42Speaker 2: do it, and, yeah, I mean, that's another place. Kind
- 21:45Speaker 2: of like the Will Stein effect, the Whittingham leaving and
- 21:49Speaker 2: struggling and Utah being as good as it's arguably ever
- 21:53Speaker 2: been without him tells you something.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And also, let me make sure I get this number right,
- 21:59Speaker 1: Michigan learned hiring a 66-year-old coach.
- 22:04Speaker 3: May be not the thing that you should do.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And I say this as somebody who thinks that Kyle
- 22:11Speaker 1: Whittingham is a Hall of Fame coach.
- 22:14Speaker 3: But it's been bad.
- 22:15Speaker 1: It's been bad in a job where they were so
- 22:20Speaker 1: happy to get a new coach. I didn't think that
- 22:22Speaker 1: anybody could put up something to make people think it
- 22:24Speaker 1: was bad.
- 22:27Speaker 2: They're in Penn State both. They were happy to get
- 22:28Speaker 2: a new coach there. That's been even worse. But to
- 22:32Speaker 2: your point with Michigan, yeah, like I think– the Sharon
- 22:37Speaker 2: Moore thing was so dysfunctional. They're just like, we need
- 22:39Speaker 2: an adult, we need an adult coach. And so they
- 22:42Speaker 2: went and got not just an adult, they got a
- 22:44Speaker 2: senior citizen, they got a grandparent and maybe that wasn't
- 22:47Speaker 2: the way to go. And I was kind of a
- 22:50Speaker 2: rushed coaching search to a degree, but at the time
- 22:54Speaker 2: I thought it was the right thing to do, but
- 22:56Speaker 2: I didn't know that he was going to walk in
- 22:57Speaker 2: and have no idea how to field an offense. I mean, that,
- 23:01Speaker 2: that is just pitiful, painful. The Indiana Michigan game, was
- 23:05Speaker 2: frankly awful. A 6-6 going into overtime, that was brutal.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Matt Campbell at Penn State, since you brought that up,
- 23:13Speaker 1: to me is interesting in that we had kind of
- 23:15Speaker 1: forgot he was over there, right? Like he was a
- 23:17Speaker 1: guy that we had said for so long, like somebody
- 23:19Speaker 1: needs to go get this guy, look at what he's
- 23:21Speaker 1: done at Iowa State. And he literally took that as
- 23:23Speaker 1: far as it could go. And now he's gotten to
- 23:26Speaker 1: Penn State, which to me is a weird job, right?
- 23:28Speaker 1: Like it is a everything's in place for you to
- 23:31Speaker 1: be pretty good. I don't think anything's in place for
- 23:34Speaker 1: them to be as good as they think that they
- 23:35Speaker 1: should be, but they should be better than they are
- 23:37Speaker 1: this year.
- 23:39Speaker 2: For sure. Three and four have not yet, they haven't
- 23:41Speaker 2: yet beaten any power conference opponents. So when your, your
- 23:45Speaker 2: high watermark is beating Marshall, things are not going terribly
- 23:48Speaker 2: well there. And Campbell, you can look at similarly to
- 23:52Speaker 2: Whittingham of just really good in a hard job and
- 23:55Speaker 2: all of a sudden he gets a bigger job and geez,
- 23:58Speaker 2: maybe there's something that just doesn't translate. What is missing here?
- 24:02Speaker 2: And part of the problem, well, he took a lot
- 24:04Speaker 2: of Iowa State players with him to Penn State and
- 24:08Speaker 2: that's a pretty tough commute, if you will, from a
- 24:12Speaker 2: pretty good Big 12 team to a place that wants
- 24:16Speaker 2: to compete to win the Big 10. That's a big
- 24:19Speaker 2: jump in terms of talent level. And again, it probably
- 24:22Speaker 2: reinforces what Cignetti did with James Madison, guys. And what
- 24:26Speaker 2: Chesney is doing with James Madison, guys, is highly unusual.
- 24:30Speaker 3: That's what I was just about to say.
- 24:31Speaker 1: But you can take the dudes from James Madison, and
- 24:34Speaker 1: you can make it work at two places that nobody's– well,
- 24:38Speaker 1: Indiana's a different level, and nobody's figured out how to
- 24:40Speaker 1: make it work. But the UCLA one, that's a weird job.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Everybody knows that's a weird job. And these guys just
- 24:45Speaker 1: keep bringing these guys from James Madison, which to me
- 24:48Speaker 1: a big part of it is the state of Virginia
- 24:50Speaker 1: is weird because the schools are nowhere near the players–
- 24:54Speaker 1: And so there are all these other schools that popped up. And,
- 24:58Speaker 1: you know, the James Madisons, the Old Dominions, everybody else
- 25:01Speaker 1: has been like, hey, but I think there's a chance
- 25:02Speaker 1: that we can get some of these guys because we're
- 25:04Speaker 1: closer to the guys than Virginia Tech is than they
- 25:07Speaker 1: are in Charlottesville. Like East Carolina used to be the
- 25:10Speaker 1: biggest school near the Tidewater, right? Like it's this ultimate
- 25:13Speaker 1: no man's land. And apparently James Madison is the one
- 25:16Speaker 1: that figured it out because you can take their guys
- 25:18Speaker 1: and take them somewhere else too.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's unbelievable. And I went up. You know,
- 25:23Speaker 2: Cignetti's first year went up to Indiana and interviewed a
- 25:25Speaker 2: bunch of the guys that were James Madison transfers, and
- 25:28Speaker 2: they were from the state of Virginia. And you go
- 25:30Speaker 2: through and ask them, did Virginia Tech recruit you?
- 25:33Speaker 3: No.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Did Virginia recruit you?
- 25:35Speaker 1: No.
- 25:35Speaker 2: It's like, why the hell not? What are you looking at?
- 25:39Speaker 2: These guys could play in the Big Ten and then
- 25:41Speaker 2: ultimately several of them playing.
- 25:43Speaker 1: In the NFL.
- 25:43Speaker 3: All right.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Coming up next, we're going to talk about the Madhouse
- 25:47Speaker 1: in Austin. Maybe it looks better after they won on Saturday.
- 25:49Speaker 3: We'll see.

- 27:20Speaker 4: if you win your first $ 5 lineup. Let's look to
- 27:24Speaker 4: an AFC North matchup. Cleveland taking on Pittsburgh. Deshaun Watson's
- 27:27Speaker 4: projections set at 206.5 passing yards. Bo, what are you
- 27:32Speaker 4: expecting in this matchup?
- 27:33Speaker 1: I mean, I have to say, while he has been
- 27:35Speaker 1: playing well, there's a lot of potential for a nasty
- 27:38Speaker 1: game here. I would go less a nasty outcome for
- 27:44Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson.
- 27:44Speaker 2: It's just so bizarre because.
- 27:46Speaker 4: It's been a nasty three quarters in every game.
- 27:49Speaker 3: It has.
- 27:49Speaker 4: But that fourth quarter.
- 27:51Speaker 3: It has.
- 27:51Speaker 1: But I tell you this, he looked like D nasty
- 27:55Speaker 1: in the previous game.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Over 300 yards. Played really well. But this week, nasty
- 28:01Speaker 3: for D.
- 28:02Speaker 2: All right.
- 28:02Speaker 4: Thanks again to PrizePix. Use code BOMANI to join the action.
- 28:06Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Pat Forty, SI.com. I
- 28:10Speaker 1: have to give this to Sark. They're down Colin Simmons,
- 28:13Speaker 1: their best player. They're down a handful of other guys.
- 28:16Speaker 1: All the talk end of the week is about how
- 28:17Speaker 1: they're about to have to bench Arch, and they got
- 28:21Speaker 1: out early against Ole Miss. They let Ole Miss come back,
- 28:25Speaker 1: but they did ultimately win the game. That was as
- 28:27Speaker 1: must-win a game as that man has ever had in
- 28:29Speaker 1: his life, but it still doesn't feel like things are
- 28:32Speaker 1: good there.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I mean, like, obviously, it sure beats
- 28:37Speaker 2: the alternative, right? I mean, if they had blown a
- 28:39Speaker 2: three-touchdown lead at home to Ole Miss for their third
- 28:42Speaker 2: straight loss, oh, my God. Like, the toxicity would be
- 28:47Speaker 2: off the charts. I don't know how you would handle that.
- 28:50Speaker 2: So it was must-win in terms of just calming the
- 28:54Speaker 2: water long enough to carry on. Ole Miss is a
- 28:57Speaker 2: pretty good team. You've got a victory over Ohio State.
- 29:01Speaker 2: You've got a victory over Tennessee. You've got a victory
- 29:03Speaker 2: over Ole Miss. Right now, you're probably the best two-loss
- 29:07Speaker 2: team out there, but you've got to keep going. Mississippi
- 29:11Speaker 2: State this week shouldn't be a problem, but then after that,
- 29:13Speaker 2: you've got some tough games, and the eternal arch angst
- 29:17Speaker 2: is just hanging out there. Is he good enough? And
- 29:20Speaker 2: especially if you're going to have a lot of your
- 29:22Speaker 2: other studs injured, not just Colin Simmons. You mentioned Hollywood
- 29:25Speaker 2: Smothers missed that game running back. So, you know, there's
- 29:30Speaker 2: still the pot. The pot will continue to simmer for
- 29:35Speaker 2: sure for the rest of the season. They've just got
- 29:37Speaker 2: to keep winning, lose another game and everybody's going free.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Out again. Yeah, and I think.
- 29:43Speaker 1: He's in that place now where they're getting a little
- 29:46Speaker 1: tired of your face and another guy that can't handle
- 29:52Speaker 1: when things are bad and having to talk to people
- 29:54Speaker 1: about it. The thing I've said– if you're going to
- 29:56Speaker 1: be Mack Brown minus the Sonny disposition, brother, that's not, that's,
- 30:00Speaker 1: you're doing it the wrong way. That's, that's not, that's,
- 30:02Speaker 1: that's not the part to dispose of if you're going
- 30:05Speaker 1: to wind up taking that approach. And with Arch, it's
- 30:08Speaker 1: been interesting to me to see the film guys and
- 30:10Speaker 1: their critiques of the offense because there seem to be
- 30:12Speaker 1: The people that it seems obvious that the program talks
- 30:15Speaker 1: to and will make all the arguments about the throws
- 30:17Speaker 1: that Arch doesn't make, and then the other guys be like, hey,
- 30:20Speaker 1: this dude is not actually letting this guy play quarterback.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Arch was one of those recruits that happened every now
- 30:26Speaker 1: and then that people want to win to be able
- 30:28Speaker 1: to say that they won. He's a trophy date in
- 30:31Speaker 1: a lot of ways. But then in the end, it's
- 30:33Speaker 1: your job to be that guy. Obviously, Archie decided to
- 30:37Speaker 1: send that boy to go play for you because they
- 30:39Speaker 1: thought you were the guy that could make him a
- 30:40Speaker 1: better quarterback. And now all we know is that he's
- 30:43Speaker 1: not going to play for you next year, but we
- 30:45Speaker 1: don't think he's going.
- 30:46Speaker 3: To play in the NFL next year. Colossal failure.
- 30:49Speaker 1: That's your second straight five-star quarterback that didn't live up
- 30:52Speaker 1: to what you were supposed to make him out to be.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Good point.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I mean, the Quinn Ewers thing was kind of, it
- 30:58Speaker 2: was similar where He's supposed to carry the program to
- 31:02Speaker 2: a national championship, and it just kind of diminishing returns,
- 31:06Speaker 2: and you're watching that now with Arch as well. Yeah,
- 31:09Speaker 2: the questions are, is Arch not seeing it, or is
- 31:12Speaker 2: Arch not even allowed to look at it in terms
- 31:14Speaker 2: of pre-snap? Is he allowed to walk up, check off,
- 31:19Speaker 2: go to something different, or has that been taken away
- 31:21Speaker 2: from him? If so, why? Is he just not good
- 31:23Speaker 2: at it, or what is going on? Because the offense,
- 31:27Speaker 2: it looks like a series of– misreads, misidentifications, whatever the
- 31:34Speaker 2: case may be. And then you throw in accuracy issues
- 31:37Speaker 2: on top of that. And this whole thing has just
- 31:40Speaker 2: become incredibly overwrought. And I get the feeling watching him now, Bo,
- 31:45Speaker 2: that like every incompletion, everybody wants to turn into a referendum. Like, oh,
- 31:50Speaker 2: he can't do it. He just missed that wide open
- 31:52Speaker 2: guy in the flat. Well, but then he'll come back
- 31:54Speaker 2: and he'll lead a three-touchdown rally against Ohio State in
- 31:59Speaker 2: which he made several really big plays. But that's part
- 32:02Speaker 2: of the problem is the inconsistency. You love him one minute,
- 32:06Speaker 2: you can't stand him the next, and that's a hard
- 32:09Speaker 2: way to go through life as a quarterback, especially one
- 32:11Speaker 2: who is supposed to be a program savior. And it
- 32:14Speaker 2: does come back on a coach that everybody said, oh,
- 32:17Speaker 2: offensive genius, elite play caller. elite quarterback guy. And I
- 32:22Speaker 2: probably said all those things myself, but it's not panning
- 32:24Speaker 2: out that way right now.
- 32:26Speaker 1: And I have to say this, we have to give
- 32:28Speaker 1: this to them. And you mentioned it earlier. Their list
- 32:31Speaker 1: of wins is good. In the Arch Manning era quarterback
- 32:35Speaker 1: in Texas, I don't think anybody can put win for win,
- 32:39Speaker 1: can do much better than Texas has done in that
- 32:41Speaker 1: time period.
- 32:42Speaker 3: But, man, we.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Remember every single loss, every single one just jumps off
- 32:48Speaker 1: the page. And then this year, the thing that Sark
- 32:51Speaker 1: has done as Texas coach that, honestly, I'm not sure
- 32:54Speaker 1: the last coach to do before him was big embarrassing
- 32:57Speaker 1: wins over Oklahoma, just curb stomping them. none of those
- 33:01Speaker 1: could feel as good to them as that loss had
- 33:03Speaker 1: to feel bad this year. Like it just kind of
- 33:06Speaker 1: took the wheels off of everything that they were doing
- 33:08Speaker 1: this year.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Totally did. You're ranked number one. You're beating them by 10.
- 33:13Speaker 2: You lose in large part because you're, you know, biggest
- 33:17Speaker 2: quarterback recruit ever through two horrific interceptions in the fourth quarter.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I mean, that was really bad. And, and yes, the
- 33:24Speaker 2: Oklahoma fans had basically given up on the season, but there's,
- 33:29Speaker 2: you know how that rivalry is, man. You, if, if
- 33:31Speaker 2: you're the underdog and you get a chance to shove
- 33:33Speaker 2: a stick in the eye of the favorite, man, they
- 33:35Speaker 2: do it. They rise up. The underdogs rise up in
- 33:38Speaker 2: the red river game.
- 33:39Speaker 3: You know, it is interesting.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Um, Texas fans seem more miffed about this season than
- 33:44Speaker 1: Oklahoma fans do. And Oklahoma fans are questioning the entire experiment.
- 33:50Speaker 2: That's yeah. It's fascinating. Like First of all, I've never
- 33:55Speaker 2: understood the two contract extensions that Brent Venables has gotten.
- 33:59Speaker 2: It totally blows my mind. They made the playoff last year.
- 34:04Speaker 2: They won through a tough November to get there. But
- 34:09Speaker 2: Oklahoma certainly used to aspire to being more than a
- 34:13Speaker 2: number eight seed in a playoff, theoretically. And that's the
- 34:16Speaker 2: high watermark. That's the best they've done with Venables. They've
- 34:19Speaker 2: had some bad years, and this year is a bad year.
- 34:22Speaker 2: So I don't fully get the whole... the contract situation
- 34:28Speaker 2: for Venables. But they've tied themselves to him. They've tried
- 34:31Speaker 2: to bring in every possible support mechanism. Went and got
- 34:35Speaker 2: a splashy GM who I think might be the highest
- 34:37Speaker 2: paid general manager in college football. All the support staff.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Offensive coordinator who was supposed to be the guy. John
- 34:45Speaker 2: Mateer was a big dollar acquisition at quarterback. And none
- 34:50Speaker 2: of it has worked. They're a horrible offensive team. And
- 34:53Speaker 2: they just, they've gone into the big, into the SEC
- 34:56Speaker 2: and looked like a program that's in over their head
- 34:58Speaker 2: for the most part.
- 35:00Speaker 1: How's Heat Watch feeling down there in Tuscaloosa? They've got
- 35:03Speaker 1: a mere two losses so far. They've got LSU this week.
- 35:07Speaker 1: After that, it looks like it's pretty smooth sailing for Alabama.
- 35:10Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Maybe I just cannot let go of my priors that
- 35:13Speaker 1: this job devours people and that Nick Saban has made
- 35:15Speaker 1: us forget that this job devours people. But the only
- 35:18Speaker 1: time I've seen this man happy at that job is
- 35:21Speaker 1: in that AI video when he was singing Outstanding.
- 35:24Speaker 3: He looked thrilled in that.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Yeah, by far the happiest I've ever seen Caelan DeBoer
- 35:29Speaker 2: wearing Alabama gear, that's for sure. I mean, look, yeah,
- 35:34Speaker 2: it's week to week there. It really is. That's another
- 35:37Speaker 2: place like Texas. You lose two in a row, and
- 35:41Speaker 2: everybody wants to bail on you. And unfortunately for DeBoer,
- 35:44Speaker 2: this is the third straight year that everybody has wanted
- 35:47Speaker 2: to bail on him. And before the Georgia game, I
- 35:50Speaker 2: think everybody thought, myself included, He has got it. He
- 35:54Speaker 2: has figured it out. He has turned the corner. They
- 35:57Speaker 2: have an explosive offense. They've got a quarterback who's super talented.
- 36:01Speaker 2: They're ready to step back up and be in Alabama.
- 36:04Speaker 2: And then they score 17 against Georgia, 10 against Tennessee.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Good defenses, but still, you lose both of those. That
- 36:12Speaker 2: was must win against Texas A & M. But yes,
- 36:14Speaker 2: this LSU game, they're off this weekend. But then LSU
- 36:18Speaker 2: November 7th looms extremely large. You win that one and
- 36:22Speaker 2: then you put the pressure on Lane Kiffin. But if
- 36:25Speaker 2: you win that, you could win out and you're 10-2
- 36:27Speaker 2: and you're in the playoff. And again, we're back to
- 36:29Speaker 2: that point where, well, at least we're in the playoff.
- 36:33Speaker 2: But we know Nick Saban would have been 12-0 and
- 36:36Speaker 2: going to the SEC championship.
- 36:37Speaker 3: How surprised were you with that L that Georgia took
- 36:40Speaker 3: to Auburn?
- 36:41Speaker 4: Shocked.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Completely shocked.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Because Kirby doesn't lose that game.
- 36:45Speaker 2: No. Came out of nowhere. Kirby never loses at home
- 36:49Speaker 2: to unranked teams. It's been a long, long span. Now,
- 36:52Speaker 2: this did harken back a little bit to maybe 2018, 19, 20.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Kirby's team, Georgia, would have one game a year where
- 37:03Speaker 2: they would just lose their minds. They would play so
- 37:06Speaker 2: badly you couldn't believe it. They would do everything wrong.
- 37:09Speaker 2: This looked a little bit like that. But, man, he'd
- 37:12Speaker 2: gotten that out of his system for several years in
- 37:14Speaker 2: a row, so this was a stunning flashback.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I was watching that game as it went, and
- 37:19Speaker 1: especially what Auburn is at this point. They are now, post-expansion,
- 37:26Speaker 1: a lower-tier SEC team, it feels like. They feel somewhat
- 37:30Speaker 1: indistinguishable from, say, Mississippi State at this point.
- 37:34Speaker 3: That's a big rivalry. We get that.
- 37:36Speaker 1: But for them to win that game in Athens and
- 37:39Speaker 1: to hang in at the end in the way that
- 37:41Speaker 1: they did, that is the rare time that it just
- 37:44Speaker 1: felt like Georgia didn't show up. And that's the part
- 37:46Speaker 1: that Kirby always manages to do is just to get
- 37:48Speaker 1: them to show up. It's almost like a Pete Carroll
- 37:51Speaker 1: sort of quality of like, we're going to give you
- 37:53Speaker 1: a game every week. No matter how well we play,
- 37:56Speaker 1: we're going to be out here.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Absolutely. Because, I mean, their intensity, that's kind of their
- 38:01Speaker 2: differentiating factor. I mean, the talent, obviously. When you see them,
- 38:04Speaker 2: they look like just monsters, but they play ridiculously hard,
- 38:08Speaker 2: violent football, and they didn't against Auburn. I will say
- 38:13Speaker 2: one thing. Watching Auburn, watching Kentucky certainly, watching Florida– The
- 38:21Speaker 2: SEC has raised its floor this year for sure. I
- 38:25Speaker 2: think the ceiling has maybe come down a bit, but
- 38:27Speaker 2: the floor has been raised up. They made good hires
- 38:30Speaker 2: in the offseason. Golesh, Alex Golesh at Auburn, came from
- 38:34Speaker 2: South Florida. He's done certainly better than Hugh Freeze did
- 38:38Speaker 2: and Brian Harsin. Sumrall looks like an improvement over the
- 38:42Speaker 2: recent coaches, certainly over Billy Napier at Florida, and then Stein, obviously,
- 38:47Speaker 2: at Kentucky, too. And so... You know, the parody thing,
- 38:51Speaker 2: it's trite. It's not that interesting to talk about. But
- 38:53Speaker 2: in the SEC, it's more real, I think, than I've
- 38:55Speaker 2: ever seen it.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Where are you on the Pete Golding hire? Because I
- 38:58Speaker 1: do feel like what Ole Miss has done this year
- 39:00Speaker 1: is about the same as one would have expected if
- 39:02Speaker 1: Lane was the coach. Oh, yeah.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I think Golding's done well. I mean, first
- 39:07Speaker 2: of all, he won the one game he had to win.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Yes, he did.
- 39:10Speaker 2: He had to beat Lane. Had to beat Lane. And
- 39:12Speaker 2: so the hangover loss the next week is like, hey,
- 39:15Speaker 2: Mississippi fans will take that. If we have to make
- 39:18Speaker 2: that exchange, fine. But they've got some other good wins.
- 39:22Speaker 2: They obviously nearly pulled it off in Austin. So I
- 39:27Speaker 2: think Golding is doing fine there so far. They've got
- 39:30Speaker 2: to finish well. They're one of those, you know, there's
- 39:32Speaker 2: like seven SEC teams that are kind of hanging around
- 39:36Speaker 2: there with two losses on the fringe of the playoff race,
- 39:39Speaker 2: the fringe of maybe getting into the SEC championship game.
- 39:42Speaker 2: They're one of them. They've got a chance. I mean,
- 39:45Speaker 2: Trinidad Chambliss, elite quarterback from a college standpoint. So, I'm
- 39:50Speaker 2: fine with what Golding's done so far.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Can you imagine a world where Bill Belichick pulls it
- 39:55Speaker 1: together and beats Miami this weekend?
- 39:59Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. If they couldn't hold a 10-point
- 40:04Speaker 2: fourth quarter lead against Syracuse, the last place team in
- 40:08Speaker 2: the SEC, they ain't beating the first place team.
- 40:10Speaker 1: I'm going to throw something out here for people. The
- 40:13Speaker 1: timing of it really just hit me. This was 22
- 40:16Speaker 1: years ago. It will be on Halloween, I believe. The
- 40:20Speaker 1: official end of the U era of Miami football. I
- 40:24Speaker 1: want to say they were number three in the country,
- 40:26Speaker 1: and they went up to Chapel Hill and inexplicably lost
- 40:30Speaker 1: a Saturday night game to the Fighting John Buntings, and
- 40:35Speaker 1: nothing was the same after that ever again. They are
- 40:38Speaker 1: trotting back up there to play that game, and I
- 40:41Speaker 1: can only imagine, only imagine, how Bill Belichick views himself
- 40:46Speaker 1: as a strategist vis-a-vis Mario Cristobal.
- 40:51Speaker 3: I can only imagine.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Belichick is like, I can find a way to cook
- 40:55Speaker 1: this up. Mario is an ethos guy. What's your team do?
- 40:59Speaker 1: We beat people up. That's what we're going to do.
- 41:02Speaker 1: We're going to be fast, and we're going to beat
- 41:04Speaker 1: people up. Belichick, somewhere in there, because I think he's
- 41:08Speaker 1: done a decent job with the team that he has
- 41:10Speaker 1: this year. I think that it's not the embarrassment factor.
- 41:14Speaker 1: than it was last year, though.
- 41:15Speaker 3: You are correct.
- 41:16Speaker 1: That Syracuse thing that, that, that would, that would jumps out.
- 41:19Speaker 1: I saw Belichick smiling when he rang that bell, when
- 41:21Speaker 1: they beat Duke.
- 41:22Speaker 3: And I was like, shit, he's actually enjoying himself.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Like this is, this could turn, this could turn into
- 41:27Speaker 1: a movie if they somehow get one overall Miami.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, I mean, really, honestly, I was shocked.
- 41:33Speaker 2: They were sitting there at like four and two. I
- 41:35Speaker 2: thought they might be one in five coming into the season,
- 41:38Speaker 2: but then to blow that Syracuse games, like, Oh my gosh. Uh,
- 41:41Speaker 2: But yeah, October 30th it was, 2004. Got it. Miami
- 41:46Speaker 2: was number four in the nation. Lost 31 to John Bunting. Ooh,
- 41:50Speaker 2: that's tough. Played golf with him once at an ACC
- 41:53Speaker 2: Media Day. Nice guy, but... Shouldn't be beating Miami under
- 41:57Speaker 2: any circumstance.
- 41:58Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 41:59Speaker 1: I had been joking because I was teaching that semester.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I told them all year, the homecoming massacre, because it
- 42:03Speaker 1: was homecoming. The homecoming massacre is on the way. And
- 42:07Speaker 1: then I remember we had exams that next week, and
- 42:09Speaker 1: I bought one of the T-shirts from the game and said,
- 42:11Speaker 1: believe it, to teach Miami. increased demand based on there's
- 42:15Speaker 1: there was a shock in demand like it was it
- 42:17Speaker 1: was a teaching lesson when that happened and look if
- 42:20Speaker 1: miami wins that um everybody dust off your catholics versus
- 42:24Speaker 1: convicts nostalgia because it's going to be miami and notre
- 42:27Speaker 1: dame it will be nothing like the 1988 game was
- 42:31Speaker 1: but everybody's going to pretend like the two things have
- 42:33Speaker 1: anything to do with each.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Other oh yeah yeah i i actually i covered the
- 42:38Speaker 2: the miami notre dame 88 game the first big event
- 42:41Speaker 2: i covered I'm like 23 years old, 24, and that
- 42:45Speaker 2: was epic. It felt epic. The game was epic. Everything
- 42:49Speaker 2: about it. This is not the same. I mean, it'll
- 42:52Speaker 2: be fun. It'll be good. But the nostalgia will simply be, yeah,
- 42:56Speaker 2: remember that one time. It won't be like this is
- 42:58Speaker 2: a repeat of that.
- 42:59Speaker 1: The one thing that we'll never be able to get
- 43:01Speaker 1: again because you can only have one of those things once,
- 43:03Speaker 1: but it will be impossible to replicate like. Miami was
- 43:07Speaker 1: like Mike Tyson.
- 43:09Speaker 3: At that time.
- 43:10Speaker 1: There's been nothing like this. They are terrifying in some ways.
- 43:16Speaker 1: They are invigorating in others. Everything else, you look back
- 43:19Speaker 1: on it and be like, ah, yeah, some of those
- 43:20Speaker 1: criticisms were correct. You can go back on all of it.
- 43:24Speaker 1: But the idea of Miami and Notre Dame at that time,
- 43:27Speaker 1: no program could ever mean what Miami meant ever again.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And to have that game with both of them, that
- 43:34Speaker 1: was a time. Oh, yeah.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. And yes, it was way oversimplified into Catholics
- 43:41Speaker 2: versus convicts, white hats versus black hats, all the racial
- 43:44Speaker 2: coding that may have gone into it. But it was
- 43:48Speaker 2: as stark a contrast between programs as you can about find.
- 43:54Speaker 2: And then When they brawl before the game, it's like, oh, man,
- 43:59Speaker 2: it is on. And then the game lived up to it, 31-30.
- 44:01Speaker 2: So that was about as good as college football gets.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:06Speaker 1: You mentioned Bob Chesney a little earlier, and we didn't
- 44:08Speaker 1: talk that much about UCLA. But they're number seven in
- 44:11Speaker 1: the country. And I don't think anybody at all saw
- 44:16Speaker 1: that along the way. What is it that they are
- 44:19Speaker 1: doing that has allowed them to make this jump?
- 44:22Speaker 2: The most amazing thing to me is they have turned
- 44:25Speaker 2: UCLA of all places into a tough ass football team.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Like they run the ball. They stop the run. They've
- 44:32Speaker 2: got three running backs. They got it. They imported an
- 44:35Speaker 2: offensive line. That's very good. And again, they lost their quarterback,
- 44:39Speaker 2: Nico Yamaliava. They've got a backup, Ty Diepenbach, who was
- 44:42Speaker 2: the quarterback at Cal Poly last year, and not even
- 44:45Speaker 2: a great one. And so they're just like, all right,
- 44:48Speaker 2: we're just going to hunker down. We're going to run
- 44:50Speaker 2: it 50 times. We're going to play defense. We're going
- 44:54Speaker 2: to shorten games, and we'll just find a way. So
- 44:57Speaker 2: it has been not just An amazing transformation, but even
- 45:02Speaker 2: within the season, an adjustment of what we're going to do.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Because at least with Nico, you had some splash and
- 45:09Speaker 2: some flash at quarterback, and now they really don't. But
- 45:12Speaker 2: it hasn't stopped them. They've just said, well, we'll be
- 45:15Speaker 2: better defensively, and we'll figure it out. And so it's
- 45:19Speaker 2: as good a coaching job, non-Signetti version, as I've seen
- 45:22Speaker 2: in quite a while.
- 45:23Speaker 1: All right, last thing before we get out of here.
- 45:26Speaker 1: I just saw the latest Deion Sanders post. That's the
- 45:31Speaker 1: best way I could put it on this one. Did
- 45:32Speaker 1: you see this where they asked him about they're going
- 45:34Speaker 1: to honor the 2001 Big 12 champions, and they asked
- 45:37Speaker 1: him about that team, and he immediately started talking about
- 45:39Speaker 1: Cordell Stewart and Bill McCartney, neither of whom were anywhere
- 45:43Speaker 1: near that team when they played.
- 45:48Speaker 3: How much longer does this go?
- 45:51Speaker 2: Yeah, the bigger problem there, the– Colorado radio analyst that
- 45:58Speaker 2: does their games is Gary Barnett, who was the coach
- 46:00Speaker 2: of that team. So it's kind of, you would think
- 46:02Speaker 2: that would click in somewhere for him. Alas, no, um, look,
- 46:07Speaker 2: it's bad. It is really bad. They have completely fallen apart. The,
- 46:12Speaker 2: you know, the thing with Dion was, was that it
- 46:15Speaker 2: was like, Hey, they were just going to make it
- 46:17Speaker 2: work on force of personality, talent, and, and, and and
- 46:22Speaker 2: finding a way and they don't have enough talent. The
- 46:24Speaker 2: personality has gotten a little bit tired. They don't look
- 46:28Speaker 2: like they are a buttoned up operation at all. I,
- 46:32Speaker 2: I don't know how you sustain it. I mean, he
- 46:34Speaker 2: has given them even by Colorado standards, right? Which like
- 46:38Speaker 2: a nine and four season at Colorado should get you
- 46:40Speaker 2: like six years on the job. But since that nine
- 46:43Speaker 2: and four, his second year was Shador Sanders and with
- 46:46Speaker 2: Travis Hunter, it's been so bad that, That I don't know.
- 46:50Speaker 2: I mean, it's really tough. Nobody wants to fire Coach Prime.
- 46:54Speaker 2: But can you possibly talk him into retirement? I don't
- 46:58Speaker 2: know why he still wants to do it, given some
- 47:00Speaker 2: of his health situations. But it's certainly gone in a
- 47:05Speaker 2: direction that it's very hard to see it coming back
- 47:07Speaker 2: and going anywhere else other than a termination of the
- 47:12Speaker 2: situation one way or the other.
- 47:14Speaker 1: They're going to have to give him every dime. If
- 47:16Speaker 1: Deion Sanders' life and career has told us anything, that's
- 47:18Speaker 1: the one part. They're going to have to give him
- 47:21Speaker 1: every single dime, and I think it's going to get
- 47:23Speaker 1: ugly after he leaves because I bet you the first
- 47:26Speaker 1: order of business is the number two is going to
- 47:29Speaker 1: go back into circulation. They are going to take Shadour's
- 47:33Speaker 1: number off the wall pronto.
- 47:34Speaker 3: They're going to do that.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Okay, I don't want to make the comparison to another
- 47:38Speaker 1: team that did that in the NFL because it's unfair
- 47:40Speaker 1: to Shadour Sanders, but I'm just saying they're going to
- 47:42Speaker 1: take that shit off the wall and they're going to
- 47:43Speaker 1: hand that back out. to somebody else. But those guys
- 47:46Speaker 1: like Deion, I always think a thing they mess up
- 47:48Speaker 1: and it's important. I saw this happen with Butch Davis
- 47:50Speaker 1: at North Carolina. It doesn't matter if you don't respect
- 47:53Speaker 1: the history that that place has. Those people respect the
- 47:55Speaker 1: history of that place. And you've always got to wrap
- 47:57Speaker 1: your arms around that. And he just acted like nothing
- 48:00Speaker 1: had ever happened before he got there. And this was
- 48:04Speaker 1: like the old one thing is like a continuation of that.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Totally. No, I mean that. And look, I've played high
- 48:11Speaker 2: school football for Gary Burnett, right? So I know him
- 48:13Speaker 2: and I've known him since I was a teenager. And
- 48:18Speaker 2: I could tell when Prime got there and asked, like,
- 48:21Speaker 2: what's it like? He goes, well, it's really different. And
- 48:24Speaker 2: he felt like they walked in like they had invented football,
- 48:28Speaker 2: you know, and that anything that had ever happened, including
- 48:31Speaker 2: his time there, had been completely shoved aside and did
- 48:35Speaker 2: not matter. The players didn't matter from the old days.
- 48:39Speaker 2: The coaches, any of those wins, it was all Colorado
- 48:42Speaker 2: football started in like 2022. And here we go from there.
- 48:47Speaker 2: And again, it was great for two years since then
- 48:50Speaker 2: flat out bad.
- 48:51Speaker 4: All right.
- 48:51Speaker 3: One more thing that I think about it for my
- 48:53Speaker 3: North Carolina people, because they're here. We talked about this.
- 48:55Speaker 3: They fired Dave Doran.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Who I think did about what one would expect from
- 49:01Speaker 1: North Carolina state. But at the same time, I don't
- 49:03Speaker 1: blame them for them saying, well, we would like to
- 49:05Speaker 1: do a little better than one would expect. Like that's
- 49:07Speaker 1: the nature of growth in this, but like, who could
- 49:11Speaker 1: you see working at that job?
- 49:13Speaker 3: Like, like, we know what it is at this point.
- 49:16Speaker 3: What do you, sure. Could it be Phillip Rivers? Could
- 49:18Speaker 3: it be?
- 49:19Speaker 2: I mean, there's certain people that want to see that happen.
- 49:23Speaker 2: I mean, to me, again, if you want to win
- 49:29Speaker 2: the press conference, you go ahead and win the press
- 49:31Speaker 2: conference with Phillip Rivers. Maybe it works out. He's been
- 49:34Speaker 2: a high school coach. He's at least coached. He tried
- 49:37Speaker 2: to get the Buffalo Bills job. I have no idea
- 49:40Speaker 2: whether they took him remotely seriously. But who didn't win
- 49:44Speaker 2: the press conference recently? Indiana, UCLA. Guess where they are?
- 49:49Speaker 2: I mean, they've had unbelievable runs. So winning the press
- 49:53Speaker 2: conference is completely overrated, making the alums feel warm and
- 49:57Speaker 2: fuzzy because we got our guy. He's got his four-star
- 50:00Speaker 2: quarterback son with him. Fine, but I think you could
- 50:04Speaker 2: certainly make a more Well-informed, less risky hire. And if
- 50:12Speaker 2: you've already just had Will Wade completely blow up in
- 50:15Speaker 2: your face, wouldn't you like to make a well-informed, less
- 50:18Speaker 2: risky hire?
- 50:19Speaker 1: I just can't explain to you how much they love
- 50:21Speaker 1: Phillip Rivers. I cannot begin. And look, I wasn't even
- 50:26Speaker 1: a state guy and I love Phillip Rivers because my
- 50:28Speaker 1: first year living there was his senior year. And buddy,
- 50:31Speaker 1: I just can't explain to you how bad that football
- 50:33Speaker 1: was that was there. It would be such a relief.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Anytime I turned on and saw Phillip Rivers, I was like, hey, man,
- 50:38Speaker 1: At least I'm going to get a show. And I
- 50:39Speaker 1: guess that's how they feel under those same circumstances. Speaking
- 50:44Speaker 1: of Will Wade, I saw that you and your buddy
- 50:46Speaker 1: had a nice little chat. at SEC Basketball Media Days.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Did we ever find out?
- 50:51Speaker 2: One of us was there. One of us was there.
- 50:55Speaker 2: He wasn't. Unless you didn't show up, we had to
- 50:57Speaker 2: have a Zoom call with him. Now, yes, there was
- 51:00Speaker 2: legitimate fog that kept him from getting there, but they
- 51:02Speaker 2: could have come later in the day, right? I would think. Yeah, no,
- 51:06Speaker 2: Will's trying to pull some shenanigans down there.
- 51:09Speaker 1: Do we have any idea if those guys are going
- 51:11Speaker 1: to play?
- 51:13Speaker 2: It looks like... the guys that are on the roster
- 51:16Speaker 2: now are going to play. RJ Luis, the transfer from St.
- 51:20Speaker 2: John's who was in the NBA, that doesn't look like
- 51:24Speaker 2: it's going to happen. He's still trying, legally, but I
- 51:27Speaker 2: don't know how you get that past the SEC. And
- 51:30Speaker 2: then they had a guy from, I think, was it
- 51:33Speaker 2: Brazil or Israel, who's not going to play. But they're
- 51:36Speaker 2: going to, look, they're going to have enough bodies. They're
- 51:38Speaker 2: going to have players. They're going to have like eight
- 51:41Speaker 2: or nine guys who can play and... We'll see what
- 51:44Speaker 2: they make of it. All right.
- 51:45Speaker 3: This is my last one last thing.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Cause I know I've said like four last things, but
- 51:48Speaker 1: it dawned on me since we are talking about LSU basketball,
- 51:51Speaker 1: we have not talked about Dale Brown on this show
- 51:53Speaker 1: who passed away last week. And I was just curious
- 51:56Speaker 1: your thoughts. Cause Dale Brown, Dale Brown was one of
- 51:58Speaker 1: the rare college coaches of that generation that my daddy
- 52:01Speaker 1: would refer to as a great man. Like you weren't
- 52:03Speaker 1: going to find anybody that got more positive compliments from
- 52:05Speaker 1: people than Dale Brown did after die.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Yeah. I, I, I'm a young guy covering Kentucky basketball
- 52:13Speaker 2: in the SEC, and Dale Brown was like this geyser
- 52:19Speaker 2: of content. You just couldn't believe the stuff that came
- 52:22Speaker 2: out of his mouth, the things that he did, the
- 52:24Speaker 2: talent he got, the talent he mismanaged as a coach.
- 52:28Speaker 2: I mean, I still very vividly remember Kentucky with seven
- 52:32Speaker 2: scholarship players beating Shaq, Chris Jackson, and Stanley Roberts in
- 52:36Speaker 2: Rupp Arena. I remember Dale coming in like the next
- 52:39Speaker 2: year with the freak defense, which was a bad triangle
- 52:41Speaker 2: and two, and Kentucky scoring like 117 on him. But
- 52:46Speaker 2: you get him at the SEC tournament. I remember one
- 52:50Speaker 2: year they were going to have to play four games
- 52:51Speaker 2: in four days back when that was kind of a
- 52:53Speaker 2: big thing. So Dale just convinces his team, fatigue is overrated.
- 52:59Speaker 2: I'm going to stay up every minute of every day
- 53:01Speaker 2: until we're eliminated. I'm staying up around the clock. And
- 53:05Speaker 2: he announces this at a press conference. And then like
- 53:08Speaker 2: at two in the morning, he's calling reporters like Ron Higgins. Ron,
- 53:12Speaker 2: this is Dale Brown giving you your 2 a.m. barometric
- 53:15Speaker 2: pressure check. It just became this thing. That's who he was.
- 53:19Speaker 2: He's just weird and hilarious and captivating. A true character.
- 53:25Speaker 2: There are not coaches like him anymore.
- 53:27Speaker 1: But if you gave Dale five dudes from Scotlandville, a
- 53:31Speaker 1: couple from Baker, and one from Zachary, you could go
- 53:33Speaker 1: to the Final Four.
- 53:36Speaker 2: True, yes. If you give him Shaq, you can't. No.
- 53:39Speaker 2: But if you give him those guys, he did go
- 53:41Speaker 2: to the Final Four twice.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Yep, and a point I've seen people make, as much
- 53:45Speaker 1: as we could argue that Dale was an underachiever, they've
- 53:48Speaker 1: not been as good since he left. They have not
- 53:51Speaker 1: been as good. It's been 20 years since they made
- 53:53Speaker 1: a Final Four with a worse coach than Dale Brown
- 53:56Speaker 1: ever could be, by the way. They went to a
- 53:59Speaker 1: Final Four with John Brady. LSU basketball. LSU has the
- 54:03Speaker 1: four best players in the history of the Southeastern Conference,
- 54:06Speaker 1: I think that you could argue. Shaq, Maravich, Bob Pettit,
- 54:09Speaker 1: and Chris Jackson. And nothing to show for it.
- 54:14Speaker 2: It is amazing. I mean, truly, like what? Multiple NBA
- 54:19Speaker 2: Hall of Famers there. And not just Hall of Fame,
- 54:21Speaker 2: but like all-time top 50.
- 54:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's three guys on the 75 team. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:26Speaker 1: And then Chris Jackson, who... Maybe the best college freshman
- 54:30Speaker 1: that ever lived.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Absolutely. Chris Jackson was 27 points a game right away.
- 54:35Speaker 2: It was unbelievable.
- 54:36Speaker 3: And like 5'11, 140 pounds.
- 54:37Speaker 1: Yeah. My brother tells a story about guarding Chris Jackson
- 54:43Speaker 1: in a pickup game because he went to Southern when
- 54:45Speaker 1: those guys were at LSU. So he had to guard
- 54:47Speaker 1: Chris Jackson at a pickup game at the Armory in
- 54:50Speaker 1: Baton Rouge, and he said he got caught on a switch,
- 54:52Speaker 1: and now he's guarding Chris Jackson. And he said, well,
- 54:54Speaker 1: what he's not going to do is go buy me.
- 54:56Speaker 1: I'm just going to keep going back, and he's not
- 54:58Speaker 1: going to go buy me. And he said there wasn't
- 55:00Speaker 1: no he's not going to go buy me. There was
- 55:03Speaker 1: no retreat going back fast enough for anything else.
- 55:06Speaker 3: There was nothing that you could do in the face
- 55:09Speaker 3: of that guy.
- 55:10Speaker 1: But Dale squared off with the NCAA before people had
- 55:12Speaker 1: the heart to square off with the NCAA, too. Like,
- 55:14Speaker 1: you may not know this. Dale Brown was honored in
- 55:18Speaker 1: 2013 by the 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge for
- 55:22Speaker 1: lifetime contributions to the community.
- 55:24Speaker 2: How about that? Thanks, Luke. Dale was, you know what,
- 55:29Speaker 2: Dale was for the cause, whatever the cause was.
- 55:31Speaker 4: Yes.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Basically. Dale was for.
- 55:33Speaker 1: And let me tell you, Daddy Dale is an all-time
- 55:35Speaker 1: great nickname. Like, you've done something right if people are
- 55:37Speaker 1: willing to call you Daddy Dale in public. But, hey,
- 55:41Speaker 1: that is Pat Forty. Check him out, SI.com, covering college
- 55:44Speaker 1: football and college basketball.
- 55:46Speaker 3: My man, I greatly appreciate you.
- 55:48Speaker 2: My pleasure.
