- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, after the twelfth
- 0:06Speaker 1: birthday of this podcast, which is a couple of days,
- 0:08Speaker 1: we'll launch a new promo, but for now a little bit.
- 0:11Speaker 1: My stepdad Victor Furman there to kick off February. And yes,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'll get to the interviews I did from Pinstripe Pride
- 0:21Speaker 1: on the sports feature, but I'll only go Alex News.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I've got to introduce you to a group that I
- 0:29Speaker 1: get emails from every week called the Flip Side, And
- 0:32Speaker 1: though they didn't sponsor this, I kind of want them
- 0:35Speaker 1: to know, Hey, I've got an eye out on them.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Whether you're a news junkie, educator, proactive community or family member,
- 0:43Speaker 1: the Flip Side is for you, and I get their
- 0:47Speaker 1: emails and they did a whole Sunday recap for the
- 0:51Speaker 1: Weekend Review, which really got me intrigued to talk about them,
- 0:57Speaker 1: because I of course love to do this one leg
- 1:04Speaker 1: of Alex News feature and the Flip Side wee can
- 1:06Speaker 1: review tells me both sides of the story, whether it
- 1:12Speaker 1: be that fatal ice shooting in Minneapolis a week ago
- 1:16Speaker 1: Saturday of Alex Prietti or Tom Homan going into uh
- 1:25Speaker 1: Minneapolis trying and quell it. But there were some things
- 1:27Speaker 1: I didn't even know about that the flip side taught me,
- 1:31Speaker 1: including our involvement with Yes affairs in China. This was interesting,
- 1:42Speaker 1: China's military purge. This was from Thursday of last week.
- 1:47Speaker 1: China's most senior general is under investigation, Chinese ministry said
- 1:51Speaker 1: last Saturday, in the highest profile purge to date of
- 1:55Speaker 1: senior military leadership. As Beijing modernizes its forces and tries
- 2:00Speaker 1: to further project its mind, I have to believe the
- 2:04Speaker 1: Trump administration is keeping eye on this and all the
- 2:10Speaker 1: military maneuvers of Xi's what they're calling military purge. But
- 2:15Speaker 1: here you go, so you have the story from the
- 2:17Speaker 1: left perspective and the right. From the left, they're saying
- 2:21Speaker 1: China may never again have a moment when Washington is
- 2:24Speaker 1: so reluctant to intervene on Taiwan's behalf, and they said
- 2:29Speaker 1: a story from one of the news outlets. And on
- 2:38Speaker 1: the right, it's considered a seismic shift in Beijing's power structure.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Maybe we'll we'll have to talk about this and deal
- 2:48Speaker 1: with this. Because I do not want China to invade Taiwan.
- 2:52Speaker 1: No one should want China to invade Taiwan, no one should,
- 2:58Speaker 1: but the flip side, if you didn't subscribe to you
- 3:00Speaker 1: wouldn't know that China's undergoing military maneuvers that could lead
- 3:05Speaker 1: to that, and we need to stop it. We need
- 3:08Speaker 1: to stop it. While we're trying to get Greenland and
- 3:10Speaker 1: try and run Venezuela. We also need to stop China
- 3:13Speaker 1: from taking over Taiwan. But then this in Syria, there
- 3:20Speaker 1: was a four day ceasefire earlier last week between the
- 3:23Speaker 1: Syrian government and Kurdish forces which expired Saturday night and
- 3:27Speaker 1: has been descended by fifteen days. And we are being
- 3:47Speaker 1: encouraged by both sides to not abandon the Syrian Democratic Forces,
- 3:54Speaker 1: the SDF, the us RELI upon the USDF in the
- 3:58Speaker 1: battle against the Islamic State. But according to the left,
- 4:02Speaker 1: Trump has embraced mister Sarah, who is the president right
- 4:09Speaker 1: now of Syria. So there are some foreign affairs going
- 4:17Speaker 1: on that in addition to the craziness here, and I
- 4:21Speaker 1: mean craziness here, we need to keep an eye on
- 4:25Speaker 1: for the sake of monitoring how we're doing overseas, as
- 4:30Speaker 1: well as trying to keep the home front as calm
- 4:33Speaker 1: as possible, even though it looks crazy right now. But
- 4:37Speaker 1: there is no flip side to this, and I'm meant
- 4:40Speaker 1: to talk about this, but that the freezing cold in
- 4:47Speaker 1: New York. You can feel it every step you take
- 4:50Speaker 1: and every movie made haha sting, but seriously, you could
- 4:54Speaker 1: feel it in every step you take and every breath
- 4:57Speaker 1: you take. And is Mumdannie to be blamed for the
- 5:04Speaker 1: deaths of these homeless people? That's my question on one
- 5:09Speaker 1: like at alex News, is this death? Are these deaths?
- 5:18Speaker 1: Someone said fifteen on Mamdannie's hands? And I'll tell you why.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I say that I've seen the homeless outreach teams in
- 5:34Speaker 1: the city fail at trying to bring the homeless from
- 5:38Speaker 1: the even the subway cars, even the subway cars and
- 5:41Speaker 1: the E line and all that the outreach program doesn't
- 5:46Speaker 1: seem enticing enough to go to a shelter where the
- 5:49Speaker 1: homeless may not be safe. Do I agree with encampments. No,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but I will defend Momdanni on this. You can only
- 6:02Speaker 1: do so much to try and gets up it off
- 6:03Speaker 1: the street. If they say no. I hate to say
- 6:07Speaker 1: it's their choice, but it feels like their choice. You
- 6:13Speaker 1: can offer every incentive you can try and push them
- 6:16Speaker 1: off the streets. But if they don't want to go,
- 6:20Speaker 1: then unfortunately, there will be consequences. I don't necessarily think
- 6:25Speaker 1: this is mum Donnie's problem. This has been a problem
- 6:31Speaker 1: even during the Nblazio days and maybe during Bloomberg, but
- 6:35Speaker 1: more so when the outreach I felt failed during the
- 6:38Speaker 1: Blasios era. Unless he was going to get photographs, then
- 6:41Speaker 1: he cleared out the whole. But right now, right now, man,
- 6:49Speaker 1: I just think Mum Donnie's not to blame for these
- 6:54Speaker 1: deaths in the freezing call in New York. That's the
- 6:59Speaker 1: flip side of it, because you can look at him
- 7:03Speaker 1: and blame him and say it's his fault. But if
- 7:05Speaker 1: these outreach programs aren't restructured, if these encampments aren't strategically
- 7:13Speaker 1: taken out. Now, Adams did do that, and he felt
- 7:16Speaker 1: he got a lot of flak for that. He was
- 7:20Speaker 1: strong arming them in that point in that regard, But
- 7:25Speaker 1: Mom Donnie, maybe he recognizes you can't just force someone
- 7:31Speaker 1: off the street. And I'm not a big fanom of Donnie.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We all know that. But I can't pin fifteen deaths
- 7:38Speaker 1: on his watch. I just cannot. And that's where I
- 7:46Speaker 1: feel like I'm taking the flip side because everybody's gonna
- 7:49Speaker 1: blame the mayor and the administration, who's just a month
- 7:52Speaker 1: old by the way as of yesterday. But I can't.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I can't in all conscience blame Mom Donnie for this
- 8:12Speaker 1: because I've experienced trying to help someone who's homeless. You know,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you try and give them food and they say, no,
- 8:20Speaker 1: we don't want that. Well, you're not gonna get a
- 8:22Speaker 1: four course meal, so be thankful you got a damn
- 8:28Speaker 1: sandwich or something like that. And that's where I come
- 8:32Speaker 1: with this. I have work to try and help the homeless.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I had to say it. I had an experience with
- 8:40Speaker 1: someone who was looking for money and he took fifteen
- 8:44Speaker 1: dollars from me. I went back to him and I said, no,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I only wanted you to have five. He gave me
- 8:50Speaker 1: the ten back. But they have choices, and you can
- 9:00Speaker 1: force them all you want, but if they don't want
- 9:02Speaker 1: to go, then you can't really drag them off the streets.
- 9:06Speaker 1: You cannot really drag them off the streets. So I
- 9:10Speaker 1: cannot entirely blame Mumdanni for people's choices to stay in
- 9:15Speaker 1: the freezing cold when they know the shelter isn't always
- 9:21Speaker 1: the safest. That's where the onus is on, Mumdanni. If
- 9:24Speaker 1: you want to build affordable housing and whatnot, then focus
- 9:30Speaker 1: on improving the shelter system too, so that the homeless
- 9:34Speaker 1: don't have to freeze to death. That's where I can
- 9:37Speaker 1: blame it, not the fact that these people have died.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I cannot pin that in all good conscience a mayor, Mumdanni,
- 9:45Speaker 1: because I've been there seeing how the homeless outreach fail.
- 9:51Speaker 1: They just fail because these people don't trust them. And
- 9:56Speaker 1: I've seen from my own eyes when I give someone
- 9:59Speaker 1: a sandwich, is that all you have? Or they don't
- 10:01Speaker 1: even want it sometimes, And I'm gonna sound really awful,
- 10:10Speaker 1: beggars can't be choosers. But in this case, when you
- 10:15Speaker 1: choose to stay on the streets in New York in
- 10:17Speaker 1: the freezing cold, below freezing temperatures, how is that mum
- 10:21Speaker 1: Donnie's fault. How is that mum Donnie's fault? Because if
- 10:26Speaker 1: he also tried to get rid of the encampments and
- 10:28Speaker 1: push them in the shelters, you will give him the
- 10:30Speaker 1: same flack as Adams Good. So it's not totally mum
- 10:38Speaker 1: Donnie's fault. He's inheriting a screwed up shelter system. And
- 10:43Speaker 1: that is not just Adams problem. This has been forever more.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And I think the homeless outreach system should be better,
- 10:54Speaker 1: should be better. But you know what, since we're still
- 10:58Speaker 1: in the freezing cold and we're about halfway through the
- 11:01Speaker 1: twelve days of the sub freezing, if you deceive a
- 11:07Speaker 1: homeless in NYC, call three one one, And actually the
- 11:23Speaker 1: DHS Joint Command Center works with existing homeless outreach and
- 11:29Speaker 1: prevention programs or identify, engage and traditional homeless New yorkersy
- 11:32Speaker 1: services and ultimately permanent housing. I'm gonna send this to you,
- 11:41Speaker 1: but it's called street outreach, and it's a twenty four
- 11:50Speaker 1: to seven three sixty five street outreach across all five
- 11:53Speaker 1: boroughs for the immediate response, they write New Yorkers is
- 11:57Speaker 1: the individuals they believe the homeless should contact three one
- 12:00Speaker 1: on one or nine to one one if they appear
- 12:03Speaker 1: to oppose and meet risk of themselves or others or
- 12:07Speaker 1: their as criminal activity. Experience. Outreachieves from not for profit
- 12:12Speaker 1: service providers Canvas the five boroughs twenty four hours, seven
- 12:16Speaker 1: days a week, three five days a year as part
- 12:19Speaker 1: of our citywide effort to identify and engage individuals experiencing
- 12:22Speaker 1: on sheltered homelessness. They have a list of individuals who
- 12:30Speaker 1: are known to the Joint community, confirmed to be existing
- 12:33Speaker 1: on sheltered homelessness, and currently engaged by the Joint Committit Center.
- 12:43Speaker 1: So that's very interesting that the DHS is here working
- 12:49Speaker 1: in tandem to help clear out the homeless and to
- 12:52Speaker 1: make sure they are housed. I did not know that,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but depend this all on my When these outreach teams
- 13:02Speaker 1: could go out and figure it out and try and
- 13:05Speaker 1: get these people into a shelter, well hold on, well,
- 13:22Speaker 1: then I would say it can't all be on mom, Donnie.
- 13:27Speaker 1: The best they can do is outreach. If the homeless
- 13:29Speaker 1: person says no, it's heartbreaking to say, but they're choosing
- 13:36Speaker 1: to still stay out in the freezing cold, and you
- 13:41Speaker 1: can't force someone who doesn't want to take a sandwich
- 13:47Speaker 1: to be willing to be safe in a shelter that
- 13:50Speaker 1: may not be safe. That's my flip side on the
- 13:54Speaker 1: one like a Alex News feature,
