Transcript
- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast The First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:26Are we almost done this series? We are almost almost done this
- 0:30series. What?
- 0:32Do you mean almost almost 2? Almost.
- 0:36Yeah, so we've got two more weeks, two more weeks, two more
- 0:41weeks in this series. Are you, are you tired of
- 0:44hearing about how we can hear from God?
- 0:46I'm tired of hearing about it because I'm tired of hearing
- 0:51from you. Fair.
- 0:53I want to hear from God and I, I don't know how.
- 1:00I don't know how a sermon series like this translates to
- 1:06practice. And it's not that we haven't
- 1:08given practical things, but it's like we're in the institution
- 1:13and the rhythms of church. And then it's like, go spend
- 1:18personal time with him and listen and surrender your will
- 1:21to his. And it's like, well, I just did
- 1:24my God time at church, so I don't know.
- 1:29But then we had the prayer time of prayer in service, which
- 1:33we've never done before. Which was part of trying to help
- 1:37give people another avenue of, of experiencing how God might
- 1:42speak and changing up our prayer time just from someone's going
- 1:46to stand up front and talk to God for three, 4-5 minutes.
- 1:52Be honest with yourself 6. 78 OK 10 minutes as if that one person
- 1:59was just so like having the time to hear from scripture respond
- 2:04in worship and kind of creating some space for people to hear
- 2:10what God was saying and having multiple people kind of respond
- 2:16in prayer. It was an attempt or a beginning
- 2:19to trying to to give people maybe another picture of there
- 2:25and how that could happen. I've really enjoyed that because
- 2:28of kind of what we're talking about and trying to figure out
- 2:36how do we do it and not, not just like give advice on how to
- 2:41do it or reasonings as to why it's important and to do it, but
- 2:45like creating a space for us as a congregation to do it, which I
- 2:51really loved. And obviously our prayer
- 2:52sessions on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 and Thursday
- 2:56mornings from 6:30 to 7:30 AM are our continued opportunities
- 3:01to do that in. Yeah, and we talked about it
- 3:05before in regard to our prayer sessions.
- 3:07But, you know, doing this and worship, it's not like we're
- 3:10doing something new, right? Our prayer sessions, this prayer
- 3:15time was actually modeled on that ancient practice of Lectio
- 3:19divina. And we've talked about that.
- 3:20We don't have to talk about that again.
- 3:22But just kind of reminding people like this isn't some
- 3:25innovation of a way we can pray. We're just going back to some of
- 3:30the the ancient practices of the church and bringing them into
- 3:33the modern time. Yeah.
- 3:35Which has been really, really good and I and I liked it for
- 3:39all the reasons I've already said, but I'm hoping that it
- 3:42because when we think of like a worship service, we kind of in
- 3:45our mind have what it should be, the order of what it should be,
- 3:50what it should include. And I don't, I think it's more
- 3:54of the what parts of it do I like and which parts of it do I
- 3:58feel better or receive something from versus just like going
- 4:03before the Lord. And because we just get getting
- 4:05other than we're we're habitual creatures and can get so
- 4:09comfortable and expectant of the rhythms that we like and prefer.
- 4:14And so I really liked the breaking of our normal rhythm in
- 4:19worship. Yeah.
- 4:20And now that we've kind of established what our normal
- 4:26unified worship service looks like, I think you might see more
- 4:33things where we try some different things from time to
- 4:36time. I'd love to do a prayer time
- 4:37like this again in the future. I'd love to get to the point
- 4:41where we could open it up for people in the congregation to,
- 4:45if they feel led to pray something in response to the
- 4:47Scripture and what God's saying, then you know there'd be an
- 4:50opportunity for them to come up and be part of that as well.
- 4:54And that, that to me, is reminiscent of the best worship
- 4:58experience I've ever had. And it's not what was done, but
- 5:03it was God in it was new room. 2 years ago was three years ago
- 5:10when they had the panel and then it just like broke out into
- 5:13spontaneous worship. I think that was three years
- 5:18ago. It was the fall after the
- 5:21revival at Asbury. So what year was that?
- 5:24Was that 2823? 22 yeah, 23 I think.
- 5:28Yeah, so it. Was because it was the first
- 5:30year it was in. Texas.
- 5:32Texas, Yeah, yeah. Could you describe that for us?
- 5:36What happened? I know it was my favorite words
- 5:38of experience, but. Describe what happened when they
- 5:41were talking. That was the panel with those
- 5:45who had been present and involved in stewarding that
- 5:48outpouring at Asbury, right? Yes, so they're.
- 5:52I got you. Never mind.
- 5:53I actually share my. It's so vivid in my memory.
- 5:56Yeah, it's OK, They were. Doing get there, but yeah.
- 5:58They were better. They were doing a panel about
- 6:01that. And part of the preconditions
- 6:04for the revival was this ceremony.
- 6:08Remembering, I forget, was it? People who had been sold in.
- 6:12Slavery yes, and they went and did they go to a graveyard?
- 6:15I forget like location. They went to a specific like
- 6:17location to hold the ceremony that was significant.
- 6:21And they had they had the this gentleman sing the black
- 6:28national anthem at the event the day before the revival
- 6:33outpouring. They were like, actually, would
- 6:35you mind singing it for us here? And he starts singing it and
- 6:40this just flow of that the band feeling led to get up and start
- 6:47doing worship. Random people in the crowd going
- 6:50up and reading scripture and it just and people going up and
- 6:55praying. None of it was planned.
- 6:58They were just supposed to talk. He wasn't even supposed to sing
- 7:00at all. And then they were supposed to
- 7:02be done and it went on. I don't even know how long it
- 7:05went on for, but like the presence of God and it felt like
- 7:11time wasn't real. Like my judgment of time was
- 7:14just not perceivable. It could have been 5 minutes, it
- 7:18could have been 4 hours, but you just didn't want to leave the
- 7:22moment of what was happening and, and it was unlike anything
- 7:27I've ever experienced in my life and holy, but it was one of
- 7:30those like just spirit leading every single part, people going
- 7:34up and then afterwards they were like, so that wasn't planned at
- 7:36all. We now have to rearrange the
- 7:38conference schedule for the rest of the for the rest of the day.
- 7:41Give us. A few minutes while we figure
- 7:43out what's next. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:45To have another reason just why I love New room is the
- 7:49humbleness and allow God to do what he wants to do in that time
- 7:52and shift our plans to whatever doing.
- 7:55Yeah, it's it's most beautiful when he's leading it.
- 7:59Yeah, and even like in the moment.
- 8:01Not according to the program, which I'm sure people have
- 8:04gotten upset with whenever I switch things up post bulletin
- 8:09and I say the bulletin's just a suggestion.
- 8:13If you're interested that video of the time leading, not the
- 8:18whole prayer time that. Followed but OK.
- 8:21The panel interview George is singing the lift every voice.
- 8:26OK. That's available on the
- 8:29Awakening library. Website that in the.
- 8:31Note we'll put that in the show notes so people can check that
- 8:34out. They also have a another video
- 8:38available that we'll find that talks about the importance of
- 8:43that day before yeah, that happened and how that kind of
- 8:48created a context of repentance and openness to the Spirit that
- 8:54came into that Chapel service and then the days that followed
- 8:580. That's beautiful.
- 9:00Yeah. I'm blessed for that.
- 9:02And I know that God is doing things and lining things up here
- 9:05and all that, but to get not just people that were scheduled
- 9:09to be on the stage and leading things on Sunday mornings, but
- 9:13people in the pews to be used and leading as the Spirit leads.
- 9:19Yeah, I think one of the things that I've been sensing from God
- 9:24and it hasn't been like a audible voice conversation.
- 9:28You know, here's where you need to move the worship services.
- 9:31But it's something I've been sensing as we've been planning
- 9:34worship services and and moving more into this one unified
- 9:39service is just the most important thing we do in
- 9:43worship. Isn't listening to me talk.
- 9:46Amen. I'm going to get a whole chorus.
- 9:48Singing Amen is an effect. You can get the Hallelujah
- 9:51chords in there if you want to a.
- 9:53Full song. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:54But that we're coming together as God's people to participate
- 9:59in worship. Like, it's not just we come and
- 10:02sing a couple songs that get us in the mood to listen to God's
- 10:05Word. Worship is to be participatory.
- 10:09It's supposed to be all of us together.
- 10:12And so, you know, in that sense, Sunday's service felt really
- 10:18good because we had that long time of prayer together with
- 10:21worship mixed in and Scripture and all that.
- 10:24We had communion at the end, which is much more participatory
- 10:29and active. And I only preached for a few
- 10:32minutes, you know, with the scripture reading and my closing
- 10:36prayer is less than 20 minutes all together.
- 10:39And it felt good, like the service felt like more like
- 10:44where I think maybe God might want to take us then.
- 10:47It just. Here's the order of worship up
- 10:51until we get to the important part where somebody preaches.
- 10:54Yeah, I'm not against preaching. I'm not trying to shirk my
- 10:57responsibility of preaching. That's not it.
- 11:00But. Scott just coming up with new
- 11:03ways to do less. But I think there's something
- 11:08more God wants to do in that flexibility of how we structure
- 11:13our services. Well, I I did have a couple of
- 11:17notes here from Yeah, well, your the service and your sermon.
- 11:21So I wanted to know of a testimony where you said yes to
- 11:26something of God and then you were surprised of the ripples
- 11:31that you perceived or learned from about later that stemmed
- 11:35from that. Yes.
- 11:37And you can't cop out and say yes to being the pastor here and
- 11:43then just name good things about that.
- 11:46I mean, I think a very close to home example is is how we ended
- 11:51up with one worship service instead of the two.
- 11:55That was not in my heart at all. I had no intention of making
- 11:59that shift specifically when we did it.
- 12:02I could see it happening somewhere down the road, but
- 12:04that started when I got a phone call from someone who was
- 12:07concerned about the future of our church and specifically the
- 12:12future of the first service. And, you know, the fact that
- 12:17people in our church weren't learning hymns and how
- 12:19meaningful hymns were to them and all that kind of stuff.
- 12:22And they asked, like, can will you give me permission to bring
- 12:27this up to church council? And I kind of gave that person
- 12:32my stance on where things were and why they were the way they
- 12:36were. I said, but yes, like you can,
- 12:39I'm not going to hold it against you if you bring that up.
- 12:43And in the midst of that phone conversation I was having with
- 12:46them, it would have been very easy to just squash it and shut
- 12:50it down because it wasn't the vision I had at that moment.
- 12:55You know, that conversation on the phone led to a church
- 12:59council conversation, which led to a group of people coming
- 13:03together to talk about what our options were and settling in on
- 13:07this idea that we really think that now is the, it's the right
- 13:10time to go to 1 service. And this is what that one
- 13:13service could look like. And none of that started with
- 13:17me. Even though, you know, I might
- 13:22be the lead pastor, I was not leading any of that process.
- 13:27I I had to come into that process, but it didn't start
- 13:31with me. And now I can clearly see it was
- 13:35it was God, you know, stir in the pot and pushing me in a
- 13:42direction that I wasn't ready to go.
- 13:45But I think he's doing beautiful things through it in these days.
- 13:49Yeah. So that's the that's one example
- 13:51of ripples that I've seen just here in the last year or so.
- 13:56But what about you? Anything that you can think of.
- 14:00But like even this Cuba trip that I'm going on, it started
- 14:05two years. Ago.
- 14:07Because I think I went. Yeah.
- 14:09Springs yeah, spring of 24 is when I went to that like Global
- 14:14Methodist Young Pastors Conference and they were
- 14:17promoting this pastoral cohort flame fellows.
- 14:21And I felt at that time that like God was leading me to join
- 14:25this thing. And even though I was like kind
- 14:27of against it because I was like, God, I'm busy.
- 14:28I got kids, I got church, I got this is before I was even in
- 14:32seminary and I signed up, didn't hear anything for months,
- 14:36reached out. I was like, hey, we're supposed
- 14:38to be like starting in a week. And like I got things cleared
- 14:41with the church SPRC permission to do all this stuff.
- 14:44And they were like, sorry, you're the only one that signed
- 14:47up this year. And they like every year have
- 14:50dozen plus applications for this thing.
- 14:53And well, here comes my annoying kids.
- 14:56You'll get to hear them on the podcast and, and it involved
- 14:59like monthly meetings and then going to Memphis, seeing church
- 15:03revivals in Memphis, going to Cuba, church revival in Cuba
- 15:06with like healings and stuff happening regularly, which is
- 15:09not part of the context. I grew up in the church,
- 15:11fascinated by that, believe in that, which is having
- 15:13experienced that regularly. You're in that type of
- 15:17environment and and then also like a conference.
- 15:21And so they're like, we're not having it, but we've kind of
- 15:23already set things up for Cuban might still be doing that.
- 15:26If you want to just go for that trip.
- 15:27I'll be like, yeah, let me know about that.
- 15:29And then that trip fell through and then we got to this fall.
- 15:34It was like they reached out and they're like, hey, we saved you
- 15:37a spot. We have a cohort going and we
- 15:39wanted to make sure that you were able to be a part of it.
- 15:42It's like, I got seminary now. I can't do all this.
- 15:46I can't do all this, but I'm still really interested in that
- 15:50Cuba trip if it'd be at all possible for me to just join you
- 15:53for that part, even though I'm not part of the actual cohort.
- 15:58They said they they said yes. I threw it out to SPRC about me,
- 16:03me paying to go. And they they are like, I mean,
- 16:06want Rebecca to go if that's possible.
- 16:08I didn't think about her. I was trying to get away from
- 16:10her and then and then talk to them, they say that's fine.
- 16:17And it's like wanted Rebecca to pray about it, not just going
- 16:20for the sake of going. And as Rebecca and I are praying
- 16:22about it, at one point it was just like very clear to me,
- 16:26Rebecca needs to go. And so I was like, Rebecca, you
- 16:29need to go. And so trusted my guidance on
- 16:32that. We signed up.
- 16:34And then so I'm just thinking we're going to go visit
- 16:37churches. That's pretty much it.
- 16:39Like visit churches, hear all the testimonies and experience
- 16:42what God's doing down there. Yeah.
- 16:44So then we start getting to the trip, and you can Google
- 16:48political tensions in Cuba and what's happening right now.
- 16:52And so I wasn't expecting for us to be leaving in this context.
- 16:58So it's it shifted kind of how we're viewing the trip, how
- 17:01we're expecting the trip, how we can help our brothers and
- 17:05sisters down there and the communities down there and what
- 17:07they're suffering through with our small time there and the
- 17:11things that we can provide. So yeah, we're just very, very
- 17:16excited for what God's going to. But like seeing the ripples of
- 17:18what God started and put on my heart two years ago, leading us
- 17:22to this trip at this time with Rebecca, right?
- 17:25And knowing that it's going to be fruitful and he's going to
- 17:27use it for as good as just. I'm excited to see more of the
- 17:32ripples of that because of just witnessing just leading up to
- 17:36it. I also really loved how you
- 17:38ended your. I think it was part of your
- 17:41prayer, your closing prayer was the we say yes, what's your
- 17:47question? Yeah.
- 17:48And so I think to closeout our time when you're done this
- 17:52podcast, to sincerely surrender your will to God in a moment of
- 17:57prayer, say, Lord, I'm giving you my yes, what's the question?
- 18:02And just listen and wait. Do that after I get one of my
- 18:07sons to say something cute into a mic.
- 18:09Can you say goodbye, everybody? Goodbye everybody.
