- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark ken You. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I'm your host Mark Kenyan in this episode number three
- 0:20Speaker 1: forty one, and today in the show, I am joined
- 0:23Speaker 1: by Dan Johnson to discuss it is very exciting, although
- 0:27Speaker 1: very long delayed, decision to finally leave the promised land
- 0:30Speaker 1: of Iowa to experience a deer hunt in the great
- 0:33Speaker 1: state of Michigan. All right, welcome to the Wired Hunt podcast,
- 0:39Speaker 1: brought to you by on X. Today, I got my
- 0:41Speaker 1: man Dan Johnson with me for from much need to
- 0:46Speaker 1: catch up. Um, the main thing I want to at
- 0:49Speaker 1: least the main thing I think I want to talk
- 0:50Speaker 1: about today is an exciting thing. It's like a fun,
- 0:53Speaker 1: happy thing that I am stoked that we're finally talking
- 0:57Speaker 1: about after years and years and years and years and years.
- 1:02Speaker 1: But yeah, but before we before we dive into that
- 1:07Speaker 1: which which folks listening will know what I'm referring to
- 1:10Speaker 1: now by the title of this podcast, But before that,
- 1:15Speaker 1: we're recording this on Wednesday, March eighteen. This is going
- 1:20Speaker 1: to come out a week from now, so who knows.
- 1:23Speaker 1: What the world's gonna be like seven days from now
- 1:26Speaker 1: when people are listening to this. But I can tell
- 1:28Speaker 1: you that right now, Dan stuffs pretty weird, pretty different
- 1:32Speaker 1: than the world we're living in about a week ago. Um,
- 1:36Speaker 1: how are you? How are you doing? How are you
- 1:38Speaker 1: in the family doing well? Mark? We're we're just getting by,
- 1:43Speaker 1: you know, I mean, it's kind of it's kind of
- 1:46Speaker 1: it's kind of hard over here, all right. I know
- 1:48Speaker 1: that you're kidding, because in Iowa you're pretty well sheltered
- 1:51Speaker 1: from what it is serious for a lot of people.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I know it is. I know it is. They've closed
- 1:56Speaker 1: everything in Iowa, bars, restaurants, they've closed school for four weeks. Uh.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Rumor has it they're gonna just close schools down for
- 2:04Speaker 1: the rest of the year, going right into into summer um.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And I'm sure that's the same way it is everywhere.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Right We're we're practicing our social distancing. We are trying
- 2:15Speaker 1: to wash our hands as much as possible. But you
- 2:19Speaker 1: know how little kids are, and they're touchy feely, and
- 2:22Speaker 1: you know, it's gonna be one of those things where
- 2:24Speaker 1: if one of us gets it, all of us are
- 2:26Speaker 1: gonna get it. Yeah, Yeah, it seems like with kids,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it's it's inevitable. The the one blessing of this whole
- 2:32Speaker 1: thing seems to be that kids are not, in fact
- 2:34Speaker 1: and not impacted nearly as much as as other groups
- 2:37Speaker 1: of people. So when a very, when a very the
- 2:40Speaker 1: first time I start paying attention to it, the first
- 2:43Speaker 1: thing that came in my mind was what about my son,
- 2:45Speaker 1: who's you know, just a month old and that kind
- 2:47Speaker 1: of stuff. That was really scary at first. But knowing
- 2:50Speaker 1: that at least there's a little bit of solace and
- 2:52Speaker 1: that our kids will probably be okay, that gives me
- 2:56Speaker 1: a little peace of mind. But it's pretty crazy stuff
- 2:58Speaker 1: out there, man, And I mean, none of us has
- 3:00Speaker 1: ever seen anything like this before, no man. And what
- 3:04Speaker 1: really sucks is that the voices that need to be
- 3:07Speaker 1: heard aren't necessarily the ones that have the microphone. At
- 3:11Speaker 1: this point, I feel like, right, I mean, we need
- 3:13Speaker 1: to have scientists and professionals talking and not and and
- 3:17Speaker 1: then then there's people like I don't know, I don't
- 3:21Speaker 1: want to say a name, but there is people out
- 3:24Speaker 1: there who get their information from social media and that's
- 3:28Speaker 1: the that's the gospel. It's like, oh my god, I
- 3:31Speaker 1: have to boil my bed sheets. It's crazy, you know,
- 3:34Speaker 1: like or some you know, just the craziness of it
- 3:37Speaker 1: all and watching people not even like my dad goes
- 3:42Speaker 1: to the grocery store. He lives by himself, no meat,
- 3:44Speaker 1: no produce at his local grocery store in a town
- 3:47Speaker 1: of a thousand. Man. I'll tell you what, it's a
- 3:51Speaker 1: good time to be a hunter or angler or forger
- 3:56Speaker 1: because we at least have a good store of food,
- 3:59Speaker 1: uh that maybe a lot of people don't have. So
- 4:01Speaker 1: I wonder, and I hope I don't think it will
- 4:03Speaker 1: get to this, because it sounds like supply chain will
- 4:05Speaker 1: be eventually figured out, and I hope it doesn't get
- 4:08Speaker 1: to this. But I wonder if there will come a
- 4:10Speaker 1: time when we hunters need to think about sharing our
- 4:15Speaker 1: stores of meat with people. If it gets to the
- 4:17Speaker 1: point that that folks can't get red meat, I wonder
- 4:20Speaker 1: if we will need to rally the troops and do
- 4:22Speaker 1: something like that. I don't know if we'll get to
- 4:24Speaker 1: that point. I hope not, but if we do, maybe
- 4:27Speaker 1: that's something that we can help with. You know, let's
- 4:31Speaker 1: let's let's talk about some of like the dark thoughts
- 4:34Speaker 1: that are in your head. At the moment because obviously
- 4:37Speaker 1: we're all playing by the rules right now. I mean
- 4:40Speaker 1: I watch videos online of people fighting over toilet paper
- 4:43Speaker 1: and the grocery stores, like a little literally fist fighting
- 4:47Speaker 1: over toilet paper. Right. So, you know I've seen the
- 4:52Speaker 1: movie Mad Max, right, those post apocalyptic movies where people
- 4:57Speaker 1: are all in hiding and and they you know, they're
- 5:00Speaker 1: scavenging and it's every man for themselves. But you know,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you think about that just a little bit, right, just
- 5:08Speaker 1: a little bit like if ship got real? Am I
- 5:11Speaker 1: prepared for for that? And? Uh, I don't know. I
- 5:15Speaker 1: think I think me and my family could get by
- 5:17Speaker 1: for quite a while based off of common sense and
- 5:20Speaker 1: food supply. You have, you have the leather and metal
- 5:24Speaker 1: studded like vests and headgear. M basically just straight, where
- 5:30Speaker 1: have your Mad Max appare? Already? My my wife leads
- 5:34Speaker 1: me around in a choker all day? Have you seen that?
- 5:37Speaker 1: Those movies? The most recent one, oh, the most recent one. Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 1: But remember I'm an eighties baby, so I've seen all
- 5:43Speaker 1: the originals. So the Originals, Okay, I haven't seen the Originals.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I just saw the newest one. But that's some pretty
- 5:46Speaker 1: wild stuff. I hope it doesn't get to that, right.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Uh yeah, man, Um, I try. I've been trying to
- 5:55Speaker 1: keep a level head on everything and not panic at all,
- 5:58Speaker 1: but at the same time take a serious um and
- 6:01Speaker 1: like you said, you really gotta sort the wheat from
- 6:05Speaker 1: the chaff. I guess is what they say, right, You
- 6:07Speaker 1: need to learn how to learn who to listen to,
- 6:10Speaker 1: Who are the experts. How do you ignore the noise
- 6:14Speaker 1: and the conspiracy theories but pay attention to the stuff
- 6:17Speaker 1: that does matter. So I mean, I'm I'm paying attention
- 6:20Speaker 1: to the scientists, to the CDC, to the World Health
- 6:23Speaker 1: Organization too, you know, doctors like Tony Fauci, I think
- 6:28Speaker 1: who has led, uh led the whole fight on HIV
- 6:32Speaker 1: back in the eighties and epidemics like that. This guy
- 6:35Speaker 1: knows what he's talking about. So I'm I'm listening and
- 6:37Speaker 1: taking what he has to say to heart. Um and
- 6:40Speaker 1: those folks are saying like, if we do not take
- 6:43Speaker 1: this serious, this thing is unprecedented. So I'm taking it serious,
- 6:47Speaker 1: but at the same time not not trying to lose
- 6:51Speaker 1: sleep over and trying to stay positive, trying to you know,
- 6:55Speaker 1: be a good dad, be a good husband, be whatever.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I can be um, because he can't can't change the
- 7:00Speaker 1: situation around us. All you can do is change what
- 7:03Speaker 1: you personally are going to do and how you react
- 7:04Speaker 1: to it. So um, but you can't help. But I
- 7:08Speaker 1: was talking to Doug Darren about this last week. Um,
- 7:11Speaker 1: it's really hard not to get sucked into it and
- 7:14Speaker 1: like checking your phone all the time. There's just endless
- 7:17Speaker 1: stream of updates and this is happening, now, this is happening, now,
- 7:20Speaker 1: this is happening. It's it's like watching uh, crazy apocalyptic
- 7:27Speaker 1: drama kind of TV show on Netflix, but I'm watching
- 7:29Speaker 1: in real time on my phone. Um, and it's hard
- 7:33Speaker 1: not to get addicted to that. But it's I don't
- 7:35Speaker 1: think it's healthy probably to do what I've been doing.
- 7:38Speaker 1: It's Um, I've been trying to shake it and like
- 7:41Speaker 1: put my phone away and not see it for half
- 7:43Speaker 1: the day or something, just to somehow disconnect, because I
- 7:46Speaker 1: don't think it's probably good for us to just binge
- 7:49Speaker 1: that NonStop and stress about it. So my sister in
- 7:54Speaker 1: law is a nurse, my mother is a nurse, and
- 7:56Speaker 1: I have like a couple of my best friends are
- 7:58Speaker 1: in medical fields. So yeah, I watched the news and
- 8:03Speaker 1: I'm typically off my phone for a majority of the day,
- 8:06Speaker 1: but I'm getting my information from them because I feel
- 8:12Speaker 1: like when ship starts hitting the fan with them, then
- 8:16Speaker 1: it's just a matter of a day until the rest
- 8:18Speaker 1: of the world, you know, the rest of the ship
- 8:21Speaker 1: hits the fans. So like, you know, my my sister
- 8:24Speaker 1: in law, she's telling me, you know, just follow do
- 8:28Speaker 1: what the CDC is telling you to do. You know,
- 8:30Speaker 1: wash your hands, you know, stay six ft apart. Um.
- 8:33Speaker 1: You know, obviously my wife isn't going to work. I
- 8:36Speaker 1: work from home. My kids are not going to school
- 8:40Speaker 1: as of now for four weeks. So it's basically just
- 8:45Speaker 1: keep everybody's heads on level at this point. Yeah, that's
- 8:48Speaker 1: that's all we can do. Um, how's it going so far?
- 8:52Speaker 1: With your wife at home, the kids at home? There's
- 8:54Speaker 1: a ton of people. I was talking to my buddy
- 8:57Speaker 1: been up bright about this the other day that I
- 9:00Speaker 1: have been basically living the self quarantine, work from home
- 9:04Speaker 1: with kids lifestyle for years. Everyone's now just joining the
- 9:08Speaker 1: party with me. Um, what's it been like for you
- 9:11Speaker 1: guys with everyone there in the house, are you guys
- 9:13Speaker 1: able to get anything done? Has it been a mess?
- 9:16Speaker 1: It's a little frustrating. Um, it's a little frustrating for
- 9:20Speaker 1: me because instead of having Monday through Thursday, I typically
- 9:27Speaker 1: get about three hours to work in the morning where
- 9:31Speaker 1: I can throw on cartoons or I can I can
- 9:34Speaker 1: like kick a ball while I'm sending emails and and
- 9:37Speaker 1: my son will running get it, my youngest son, you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: basically playing fetch with him and keeping keeping him occupied. Now,
- 9:45Speaker 1: everybody's home. My wife is home. She's still working full time,
- 9:50Speaker 1: right but now from home. So while we record this,
- 9:53Speaker 1: she's doing work but watching three kids. And you know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: like yesterday, yesterday and the day before, we're really nice outside,
- 10:02Speaker 1: so we spent a lot of time outside. But today
- 10:06Speaker 1: it's an all day rain. So today is gonna be
- 10:10Speaker 1: a really test of what the next four weeks are
- 10:12Speaker 1: going to be like. Yeah, man, Um, so you've been
- 10:15Speaker 1: working on from home now for almost a year, right, yep,
- 10:18Speaker 1: it's been a year, dude, It's been over a year.
- 10:20Speaker 1: That's amazing. Congratulations again, I'm making it through your first year.
- 10:23Speaker 1: That's badass stressful as ship. Yeah, I guess this might
- 10:28Speaker 1: be more stressful right now? Is that is that something
- 10:31Speaker 1: you're failing to right now? Well before this whole outbreak, right,
- 10:35Speaker 1: So I would say sometime in early February. No, it
- 10:40Speaker 1: was actually early January when you know, I, You're getting
- 10:46Speaker 1: close to this goal, you know, I said to myself, Hey, man,
- 10:49Speaker 1: if I can make it through year one by myself
- 10:52Speaker 1: doing this thing and still supporting the family and you know,
- 10:57Speaker 1: cutting ins in certain places, I could, Man, I can.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I can make it work for year two for sure, right,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and year three because you know, the company and the
- 11:05Speaker 1: content or just continuing to grow at that point and
- 11:09Speaker 1: I I'm doing it and it's it's great, but man,
- 11:13Speaker 1: there have been some points along the road. And I
- 11:15Speaker 1: actually had a conversation um with Chad Sylvester of Exodus
- 11:20Speaker 1: Trail Cameras. We did we did an episode and it
- 11:24Speaker 1: was basically about this, right, And it's just the financing
- 11:28Speaker 1: some resentment, you know, balancing work in life when you're
- 11:32Speaker 1: working from home. Um, and then you know going on
- 11:35Speaker 1: hunts is now attacks right off, right, and it's somewhat
- 11:41Speaker 1: business related, and people some people still don't see it
- 11:44Speaker 1: that way. So it's just this constant yin Yang give
- 11:49Speaker 1: and take balance at the house to make sure everybody's
- 11:52Speaker 1: taken care of. I'm getting what I want, I'm getting
- 11:55Speaker 1: the money that I need to support the family, and uh,
- 11:58Speaker 1: I don't know. It's man, I'll tell you what finance.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Finance part of it is the biggest hurdle. Yeah, no,
- 12:05Speaker 1: no doubt about that. I know that that's something that
- 12:09Speaker 1: when it's all on you, um, and there's no safety
- 12:12Speaker 1: net with a company, you know, sending you paychecks week
- 12:15Speaker 1: by week, that's it takes on a whole different level
- 12:18Speaker 1: of significance. Um. So props to you man for making
- 12:23Speaker 1: this to year one. That's a big deal. That's awesome.
- 12:25Speaker 1: So like like they say in the record company, right,
- 12:28Speaker 1: your freshman album, right, you could come out and you
- 12:30Speaker 1: could be a rock star, but the sophomore album turns
- 12:34Speaker 1: you into a legend. Right, So I gotta make sure
- 12:37Speaker 1: that you're two is greater than year one, you know
- 12:42Speaker 1: what I mean. So you gotta I just gotta keep building.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Same same with you. It's like every year you gotta
- 12:46Speaker 1: come out with something new and unique in order to
- 12:49Speaker 1: transcend to that next year too. You don't know, keep
- 12:53Speaker 1: all eyes on you because let's face it, what we
- 12:56Speaker 1: do is all about attention, right. We want people to
- 13:00Speaker 1: you are content so we can make money off of it,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and so you know, is what that whole thing is. Yeah,
- 13:08Speaker 1: if you're not growing and evolving, you're losing. That's that's
- 13:11Speaker 1: that's you always have to be growing. So I trust,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I trust and believe that you uh, you've got a
- 13:17Speaker 1: hell of a great path ahead of your buddy. So
- 13:20Speaker 1: just real quick, you know, everybody, please keep an eye
- 13:23Speaker 1: out for nine Finger adult videos. That's that's Dan's next step.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And this sophomore album is gonna be very different, going
- 13:32Speaker 1: from the hunting industry right into the adult industry. You know,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I don't want to spend too much time on this,
- 13:38Speaker 1: but I'm sure that industry is gonna be doing very
- 13:40Speaker 1: well right now with all the whole stuff. Anyways, moving
- 13:44Speaker 1: from me trust, moving on working from home though, I
- 13:50Speaker 1: want to spend like two minutes just on this because
- 13:52Speaker 1: I feel like there's a lot of people listening now
- 13:54Speaker 1: that are all of a sudden working from home that
- 13:56Speaker 1: haven't and they're working home with their wives at home
- 14:00Speaker 1: too and their kids at home. To um. I've been,
- 14:04Speaker 1: like I said, I've been doing this a while and
- 14:07Speaker 1: it I don't know if it's useful or helpful at all,
- 14:09Speaker 1: but a few things that I've done that have helped
- 14:12Speaker 1: me here. I thought i'd just share a few couple
- 14:13Speaker 1: of tips when it comes to this whole work from
- 14:16Speaker 1: home lifestyle with kids and all that. Um, it's been
- 14:18Speaker 1: like a a process for us to figure out how
- 14:20Speaker 1: to do that because I work from home, my wife
- 14:22Speaker 1: works from home. We both work full time, and we
- 14:25Speaker 1: don't send our kids to daycare, so we have our
- 14:27Speaker 1: kids here too. Um So when it comes to just
- 14:31Speaker 1: like being effective from work from home lifestyle, one thing
- 14:34Speaker 1: that helped me a lot was waking up before everybody
- 14:38Speaker 1: else does. So I try to wake up about two
- 14:42Speaker 1: hour hour or two hours before when the rest of
- 14:44Speaker 1: the family wakes up. When they wake up the variable part.
- 14:46Speaker 1: But I'm getting up at six and they get up
- 14:48Speaker 1: between seven seven thirty something like that, um, which gives
- 14:52Speaker 1: me a little time to get my morning workout in,
- 14:54Speaker 1: to get a little bit of prepara work on the
- 14:57Speaker 1: computer done, a few things like that, and just like
- 15:00Speaker 1: starting my day on my own, my own time, no
- 15:03Speaker 1: one bothered me. That's a great thing. Um. I wish
- 15:06Speaker 1: I could get up earlier. I'm just not a good
- 15:08Speaker 1: earlier morning person. But maybe somebody I have to start
- 15:10Speaker 1: getting up at like five, so I've got more time
- 15:12Speaker 1: to do that before everybody else. But that's been a
- 15:14Speaker 1: helpful thing, um, And that routine has been something that
- 15:17Speaker 1: really helped when I first started working from home. I
- 15:20Speaker 1: don't know what it was like for you, Daniel to
- 15:21Speaker 1: tell me, but when I start first started working from
- 15:24Speaker 1: home back in two thousand and thirteen, it was this novelty.
- 15:28Speaker 1: So I was like, I was gonna wake up when
- 15:30Speaker 1: I wake up, and I'm gonna work all day in
- 15:31Speaker 1: my pajamas, and if I want to go do this thing,
- 15:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna go do that thing. Um. And I just
- 15:36Speaker 1: kind of dicked around for a little bit because all
- 15:38Speaker 1: of a sudden you could. But I quickly realized that
- 15:42Speaker 1: did not lead to me being very effective. So what
- 15:45Speaker 1: does work is is still having a daily routine, still
- 15:48Speaker 1: acting like I'm going into an office. So I guess
- 15:51Speaker 1: I've got to set wake up time. I get like
- 15:53Speaker 1: a morning workout, and I get some morning journal stuff done,
- 15:56Speaker 1: just kind of outlining my goals for the day, what
- 15:59Speaker 1: would make today. It's like, ask some things like that
- 16:01Speaker 1: just to kind of prep my day. Um, get a
- 16:03Speaker 1: shower and put on real people clothes. I used to
- 16:06Speaker 1: just work all day in my pajamas, and I just
- 16:08Speaker 1: feel like a schmuck. And I acted like a schmuck,
- 16:10Speaker 1: and I worked like a schmuck. If I put on
- 16:12Speaker 1: regular pants, in a real shirt and look like a
- 16:15Speaker 1: normal person, I feel like I can act and work
- 16:18Speaker 1: a lot better. It's a little thing, but I really
- 16:20Speaker 1: do think it makes a difference, just like your mindset. UM.
- 16:24Speaker 1: So that's helped a lot. And then with the whole
- 16:26Speaker 1: kid thing, what my wife and I have had to
- 16:28Speaker 1: do is we um we split the days. So every
- 16:34Speaker 1: day my wife will work a half shift with the
- 16:37Speaker 1: kids and I'll work a half shift with the kids,
- 16:39Speaker 1: and then we flip flop who gets the morning shift
- 16:41Speaker 1: versus the afternoon shift. UM. So that for half the
- 16:45Speaker 1: day you got just you in your own office doing
- 16:48Speaker 1: your work without any interruptions. And then for the second
- 16:50Speaker 1: half of the day you are responsible for the kids
- 16:53Speaker 1: and still trying to work. Um. And so that half
- 16:56Speaker 1: of the day is less great. UM. So you've got
- 17:00Speaker 1: the afternoon shift. That's when or whenever it's got his
- 17:02Speaker 1: big naps. He'll sleep for two or three hours, so
- 17:04Speaker 1: you can still have really good time of work. But
- 17:06Speaker 1: if he's awake. Then it becomes a challenge. Um. So
- 17:09Speaker 1: that's what we've done. We flip flopped, and your day
- 17:12Speaker 1: isn't as great as to be if you had eight
- 17:14Speaker 1: nine hours completely without interruptions. So you do have to
- 17:17Speaker 1: work nights. Sometimes you do have to get up early
- 17:20Speaker 1: and work in the morning. Sometimes you can really have
- 17:22Speaker 1: to relish those nap times. Um. But I can still
- 17:27Speaker 1: get a whole lot done doing that. Um. And we
- 17:29Speaker 1: do have my mother in law does come sometimes a
- 17:31Speaker 1: couple of times a week to help too. That's a
- 17:33Speaker 1: great help. Um. Those are a couple of simple things
- 17:36Speaker 1: we've done that have helped. I don't know, Dan, what
- 17:38Speaker 1: about you? What any quick tips on working from home,
- 17:42Speaker 1: working with the kids? Uh, getting stuff done while everyone's
- 17:46Speaker 1: all around you. Yeah. So my wife has what I
- 17:49Speaker 1: would call a quote unquote real job, right, So my
- 17:52Speaker 1: schedule for the most part is flexible unless I have
- 17:56Speaker 1: something scheduled that's you know, important. Um. But when she
- 17:59Speaker 1: has a work meeting, I mean, she's got a work meeting,
- 18:02Speaker 1: so her stuff kind of takes priority and then I'm
- 18:06Speaker 1: typically left too. Like last night, I worked from oh
- 18:12Speaker 1: seven thirty after supper, you know, clean the kitchen, head
- 18:16Speaker 1: up stairs here, and then I worked till eleven thirty
- 18:21Speaker 1: last night, so I get the I get second shift,
- 18:25Speaker 1: and then I am If I got up any earlier
- 18:28Speaker 1: than what I do now, I'd be getting like two
- 18:30Speaker 1: or three hours asleep at night. So, uh, it's it's
- 18:34Speaker 1: very hard now to even just be alone in the
- 18:37Speaker 1: house to get stuff done. I mean, there's times where
- 18:42Speaker 1: it's my turn to watch the kids and I'm trying
- 18:44Speaker 1: to multitask, and I feel like a piece of ship
- 18:46Speaker 1: because I'm on my phone ignoring them, sending an email,
- 18:51Speaker 1: replying to an email, doing some social work when they're
- 18:54Speaker 1: trying to play with me, and stuff like that. And
- 18:57Speaker 1: what I don't want is my kids to see that
- 18:59Speaker 1: and think it's okay to ignore people because you have
- 19:02Speaker 1: this device in your hand now. So I'm constantly struggling
- 19:05Speaker 1: having to tell myself put it away. You can do
- 19:08Speaker 1: this later. But you know, when you have a schedule,
- 19:11Speaker 1: you know, because you don't want to do all your
- 19:12Speaker 1: social work at eleven o'clock at night, right, you don't
- 19:16Speaker 1: want to make a post at eleven. You want to
- 19:17Speaker 1: do it throughout the day. And I don't know, it's
- 19:20Speaker 1: just something that is a continue. Like I have less
- 19:23Speaker 1: of a schedule right now other than wake up, take
- 19:26Speaker 1: a shower. That's my only routine throughout the entire day.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Everything else is balance and going with the flow. Sometimes
- 19:37Speaker 1: I just gotta gotta make the best of the circumstances.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I guess. Um, yeah, man, the phone thing, that's tough
- 19:43Speaker 1: for me to exactly. Like you said, You've got to
- 19:46Speaker 1: do it. It's part of your job. At the same time,
- 19:49Speaker 1: I'm trying not to be locked on that thing. So
- 19:51Speaker 1: I I am trying to set like hours, when like
- 19:55Speaker 1: it's work hours, I'll be on it. But like when
- 19:57Speaker 1: I get done with my regular work, our day is
- 20:00Speaker 1: at five, I'll try to set it. We've got a
- 20:03Speaker 1: kind of a I don't know how you describe it.
- 20:06Speaker 1: I guess, like a bucket kind of thing on the table,
- 20:09Speaker 1: and I'll put the phone in there and try not
- 20:11Speaker 1: to mess around with it until the kids go to bed. Um,
- 20:14Speaker 1: so at least that time is his phone free. But
- 20:17Speaker 1: sometimes easier said than done. Um, what about other stuff? Lockdown?
- 20:22Speaker 1: We're on lockdown. We're supposed to be avoiding groups of
- 20:25Speaker 1: ten or more. We're supposed to be staying home as
- 20:28Speaker 1: much as possible. Staying away from public spaces as much
- 20:31Speaker 1: as possible. Uh. Any recommendations for COVID nineteen activities that
- 20:37Speaker 1: are safe. I mean, I feel like most anything that
- 20:40Speaker 1: we do as hunters is a good option, right Scouting
- 20:44Speaker 1: hunting prepent trees. Yeah, man, you've got any plans to
- 20:47Speaker 1: do that kind of thing? Uh not in the near future,
- 20:50Speaker 1: other than doing some turkey hunting. I mean, right now,
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's just been you know, I'm in that limbo of
- 20:57Speaker 1: post shed hunt pre turkey, and I mean I'd love
- 21:00Speaker 1: to get out and do maybe a day or two
- 21:02Speaker 1: more of shed hunting on the farm where I found
- 21:04Speaker 1: all of those sheds recently, because I didn't I didn't
- 21:07Speaker 1: go into the timber really at all and look for
- 21:09Speaker 1: any But you know, with the whole situation with everybody
- 21:14Speaker 1: working from home, it's just been if it's nice outside,
- 21:18Speaker 1: I'm taking the kids outside. Yes yesterday we actually went
- 21:22Speaker 1: on to a piece of state ground, uh near my home,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and we walked some deer trails. It was kind of
- 21:28Speaker 1: this big open grass grassland area, like not necessarily CRP,
- 21:33Speaker 1: but the grass was real short and we just went
- 21:36Speaker 1: out there. Oh Dad, look at deer tracks, Oh Dad,
- 21:39Speaker 1: look at this. Look at this bug, or look at this.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Look at this, Oh Dad, look at there's an eagle nest,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and just get him outside. And this is this is
- 21:46Speaker 1: actually a really good time because since this past Saturday
- 21:53Speaker 1: it's been nice out. We've done just a lot more
- 21:58Speaker 1: outside and a lot less TV and a lot less
- 22:01Speaker 1: video games, just more outside playing enjoying nature, which is
- 22:06Speaker 1: kind of a I guess if you want to call
- 22:08Speaker 1: it a silver lining, that's it. Yeah, Thank goodness that
- 22:13Speaker 1: we're getting into springtime. If this was going on right
- 22:16Speaker 1: in the middle of winter and we'd have a lot
- 22:17Speaker 1: less to do. So it's a good point. Uh. Do
- 22:22Speaker 1: you have any other recommendations for folks trying to burn time?
- 22:26Speaker 1: Book book ideas might not be your wheelhouse. I mean,
- 22:30Speaker 1: show ideas got in movies you've watched and he shows
- 22:34Speaker 1: you binge watch on Netflix, anything good like that we
- 22:38Speaker 1: can suggest. So when I when I finally do have time,
- 22:43Speaker 1: and I try to give myself thirty minutes to an
- 22:45Speaker 1: hour because I don't know about you, but I can't
- 22:47Speaker 1: just go straight to bed after I'm done working. My brains.
- 22:51Speaker 1: My brain needs like a decompress, needs to decompress, and
- 22:55Speaker 1: so I'll sit right now. I'm watching a show called Snowfall. Um.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I don't know if you've ever seen it. It's based
- 23:03Speaker 1: off of the nineteen eighties crack epidemic, how crack cocaine
- 23:09Speaker 1: was actually introduced to South central Los Angeles, and how
- 23:16Speaker 1: the CIA was actually helping provide cocaine to drug dealers.
- 23:21Speaker 1: It's like, it's loosely based on on that, but crack
- 23:24Speaker 1: cocaine was supported by the CIA back in the eighties.
- 23:28Speaker 1: So is this a fictional show or this is a
- 23:31Speaker 1: Oh no, it's a fictional show, but it's based off
- 23:33Speaker 1: of a true story. Yeah. So, because let's see, the
- 23:38Speaker 1: CIA was selling drugs, the money coming in was used
- 23:43Speaker 1: to buy weapons that they were flying down to a
- 23:48Speaker 1: Southern American country and giving to those rebels to help
- 23:53Speaker 1: overthrow a government. Y. Yeah, it's crazy, it's pretty but
- 23:58Speaker 1: it's a pretty cool show. I know there's documentaries on
- 24:00Speaker 1: it as well. But other than that, Man, I watch
- 24:04Speaker 1: one hour a TV and night these days. Man, you're
- 24:08Speaker 1: bringing me down with the story about what's going on
- 24:10Speaker 1: in the eighties. Well it's it's I mean, you know,
- 24:14Speaker 1: the whole Ronald Reagan crack epidemic thing, and uh, it's
- 24:18Speaker 1: it's a really cool, it's a really exciting, it's a
- 24:21Speaker 1: fast paced show. It's it's kind of like a shoot
- 24:23Speaker 1: him up gangster. You know you have you seen Narcos?
- 24:27Speaker 1: You haven't. You haven't watched Narcos The Story of Pablo Escobar. No,
- 24:31Speaker 1: I've heard about it, but I haven't seen it. Dude, Dude,
- 24:35Speaker 1: there's three there's like three or four seasons of it.
- 24:38Speaker 1: You definitely need to watch Narcos on Netflix. Now's the time. Yeah,
- 24:44Speaker 1: I guess I just don't watch a lot of TV.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Um and when we do, I feel like I've been
- 24:51Speaker 1: airing towards the comedy right now, Like, if we're getting
- 24:53Speaker 1: to watch TV, I need like something's gonna give me
- 24:57Speaker 1: those kinds of endorphins or whatever. Oh dude, you wanna
- 25:00Speaker 1: you wanna listen to a really funny um god? What's
- 25:04Speaker 1: her name? Fortune? I think her name is actually Fortune.
- 25:08Speaker 1: She's a bigger, blonde, shorter, curly hair, heavy set lady
- 25:12Speaker 1: who's a lesbian and dude, it is. It is a
- 25:17Speaker 1: hilarious stand up hour. You can find it on Netflix
- 25:21Speaker 1: as well. I think her name is Fortune something. I'll
- 25:23Speaker 1: check that out, dude. We did watch the stand up
- 25:25Speaker 1: special from a guy named Mike Barbiglia. I don't know
- 25:27Speaker 1: if you've ever heard of him. U super funny dude.
- 25:30Speaker 1: And it is all about his journey from not wanting
- 25:35Speaker 1: to have kids to his wife convincing him to have
- 25:38Speaker 1: a child, to then the whole process of his wife
- 25:40Speaker 1: being pregnant and what that was all like, and then
- 25:42Speaker 1: what the first year was with the baby. Uh, something
- 25:46Speaker 1: that I know you and I can both relate to
- 25:48Speaker 1: a lot right now. So that's another going It's called
- 25:50Speaker 1: the New One. Yeah, really good stuff. So so I
- 25:54Speaker 1: also have to tell you what else I've been doing
- 25:57Speaker 1: lately too. You know, when I do have time, well
- 26:02Speaker 1: I kind of I'm in a way making time whenever
- 26:05Speaker 1: I'm uploading a file or downloading a file, or waiting
- 26:08Speaker 1: for something to load, or you know, maybe I'm on
- 26:12Speaker 1: the toilet or whatever. You know what I mean. Like
- 26:14Speaker 1: those those moments, yeah, are spent straight up e scouting nice,
- 26:23Speaker 1: whether it's my home farm, whether it's Michigan, whether it's
- 26:25Speaker 1: South Dakota, whether it's you know, some other states. Because
- 26:29Speaker 1: there's a very small chance that I go to Wisconsin
- 26:33Speaker 1: maybe to do a turkey hunt right on the Mississippi River.
- 26:37Speaker 1: So h just been doing a lot of getting on
- 26:41Speaker 1: on X and just scouting. Well, that's a perfect segue, dude,
- 26:46Speaker 1: you just said the magic word. Yeah, it's been years
- 26:50Speaker 1: in the making. It's been a dream of mine. It's
- 26:52Speaker 1: been on my every every year I set these goals
- 26:55Speaker 1: for the year, and then for my five year goals,
- 26:57Speaker 1: and for years now, right at the top of my
- 26:59Speaker 1: list of my year the goals has convinced Dan Johnson
- 27:02Speaker 1: to hunt Michigan. And every year it's there. Every year
- 27:05Speaker 1: I check it off as not not achieved, not achieved,
- 27:09Speaker 1: not achieved. Now, finally, two thousand twenty, I can say
- 27:13Speaker 1: Dan Johnson is hunting Michigan. There's been a commitment made.
- 27:18Speaker 1: It's amazing. How I mean we talked years what happened? Like,
- 27:23Speaker 1: how did this is? It? Is it? Honestly the fact
- 27:25Speaker 1: that you finally realize that you couldn't put off the
- 27:30Speaker 1: verbal contract that you made five years ago or whatever,
- 27:33Speaker 1: or it was the peer pressure. Did enough people bother
- 27:35Speaker 1: you about it? How did this happen? This is a
- 27:38Speaker 1: PC peer pressure, to be honest with you, So we
- 27:42Speaker 1: there was a little bit of a technicality when we
- 27:44Speaker 1: made this agreement if I ever am able to quit
- 27:47Speaker 1: my job and go full time. Well, I didn't necessarily quit,
- 27:50Speaker 1: oh jeez, I was laid off right, So off of
- 27:55Speaker 1: a technicality, I kind of pushed it off, and then
- 27:57Speaker 1: I I made the mistake of putting out a post saying, Hey,
- 28:01Speaker 1: I'm not going on my elk hunt this year. Give
- 28:03Speaker 1: me an over the counter state to where you know,
- 28:07Speaker 1: you know where I where I can get a tag easy,
- 28:10Speaker 1: where there's a lot of public grounds so I can hunt.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Did you not expect that response you got? Well, I
- 28:16Speaker 1: thought everybody was going to be real, right, and nobody
- 28:20Speaker 1: was real about I mean, people were real, but they
- 28:23Speaker 1: were just like, dude, you know you need to go
- 28:28Speaker 1: to Michigan because you made a promise, and I was.
- 28:31Speaker 1: You know, there were people who weren't even just commenting
- 28:34Speaker 1: in that post. They were sending me direct messages saying
- 28:37Speaker 1: things like, Hey, Dan, I think it would be really
- 28:39Speaker 1: cool if you would hunt Michigan because you know you
- 28:43Speaker 1: mentioned you you know, your full time now like going
- 28:46Speaker 1: through it, not necessarily calling me out, but just like, yeah,
- 28:51Speaker 1: giving me the timeline of what actually happened. I know
- 28:55Speaker 1: the timeline, right, but people were just like so here's
- 28:58Speaker 1: what happened. Dan. You were laid off right promised Mark,
- 29:00Speaker 1: you know this, this, this, and now it's time to
- 29:03Speaker 1: pay up. It's almost like it's almost like no one
- 29:06Speaker 1: really gives a shit about me. They're just minions for you.
- 29:10Speaker 1: You know. It's it's been my plan all alone. Dan.
- 29:12Speaker 1: It's worked out wonderfully, right, But hey man, I'm getting
- 29:16Speaker 1: I said, you know, screw it, I'm gonna hunt Michigan.
- 29:20Speaker 1: And the crazy thing about this whole thing is for
- 29:24Speaker 1: everybody who in the past has said Michigan is a
- 29:28Speaker 1: dogship place to hunt. I have been getting double or
- 29:33Speaker 1: triple positive feedback from people saying, dude, don't sleep on Michigan.
- 29:39Speaker 1: You know, if you work hard and you put yourself
- 29:42Speaker 1: in the right position, there is a chance that you
- 29:45Speaker 1: run into, you know, something in the pope and young category,
- 29:48Speaker 1: or a two or a decent two or three year old,
- 29:52Speaker 1: or even a chance at a dough And it's it's
- 29:56Speaker 1: people are offering me up their properties. People are one
- 30:00Speaker 1: to give me spots, and I'm kind of turning them
- 30:02Speaker 1: down at this point because I kind of want to
- 30:04Speaker 1: go in and do more of a self test and
- 30:07Speaker 1: rely on anybody else because I think me and you've
- 30:09Speaker 1: had a conversations like, dude, I'll do scouting for you,
- 30:12Speaker 1: I'll run show cameras for you, and I'm just like,
- 30:14Speaker 1: calm down. Just I was all excited. I was like,
- 30:17Speaker 1: all right, I'm gonna help out here. But but I
- 30:19Speaker 1: like what you're getting at though. Too. I think it's
- 30:21Speaker 1: it would be a good personal challenge for you. Yeah,
- 30:25Speaker 1: and you know, for me these days, it's not necessarily
- 30:28Speaker 1: about walking into a piece of property and trying to
- 30:32Speaker 1: kill the biggest buck that's there. I'm just down for
- 30:34Speaker 1: a new experience, right, And I think this is gonna
- 30:38Speaker 1: be It's gonna be an awesome learning experience for you
- 30:41Speaker 1: because you have done out of state like l cohns
- 30:43Speaker 1: and mule deer hunts, but you've never really done a
- 30:45Speaker 1: fully focused, just white tail out of state hunt before, right, Nope,
- 30:50Speaker 1: never have. So this is gonna be. This is gonna
- 30:52Speaker 1: be awesome. You're gonna it's gonna be different, way different
- 30:55Speaker 1: than Iowa. It's gonna be fun, it's gonna be challenging. Um,
- 30:58Speaker 1: and yeah, you know, we talk a lot about the
- 31:02Speaker 1: I talk a lot about the challenges of Michigan, but
- 31:04Speaker 1: it is by no means a dogship place to hunt
- 31:06Speaker 1: like it's it's a it's a great spot. There's there's
- 31:08Speaker 1: good deer, there's good opportunities. Um, I mean you can,
- 31:12Speaker 1: if anyone's watched my hunt's over the last ten years,
- 31:15Speaker 1: you've seen that. You can. You can see some nice
- 31:17Speaker 1: deer and get some opportunities. Um. It's different, it's challenging
- 31:22Speaker 1: in certain ways, but by no means is it impossible
- 31:25Speaker 1: or not fun or not rewarding or any of that stuff. So, yeah, dude,
- 31:30Speaker 1: I'm curious though, given what you've heard from people recently,
- 31:35Speaker 1: given you know, you're following my stories and stuff over
- 31:38Speaker 1: the last almost ten years, now, um, what kind of
- 31:41Speaker 1: expectations and goals do you have for it? So so
- 31:44Speaker 1: I guess maybe maybe should rewind. First off, what's the plan?
- 31:48Speaker 1: Like when are you coming? For how long? Um? Let's
- 31:51Speaker 1: cover that, and then I want to talk expectations and goals. Yeah,
- 31:54Speaker 1: so my goal, you know, obviously it's not ideal, right,
- 31:58Speaker 1: but my goal is to come opening week, I believe,
- 32:04Speaker 1: and I am going to honestly, I think. Let me
- 32:08Speaker 1: pull up October here on my calendar, August September, October, alright,
- 32:12Speaker 1: So Uh, October one is a Thursday, so I think
- 32:17Speaker 1: I might come. I might drive up on Tuesday, the
- 32:20Speaker 1: twenty nine, and scout Wednesday before the season opens, and
- 32:27Speaker 1: then hunt to Thursday, Friday, Saturday, three day hunt and
- 32:32Speaker 1: drive back on Sunday. So I'm back late Sunday night.
- 32:35Speaker 1: So I think that might be the the goal there
- 32:41Speaker 1: um expectation wise, public ground Michigan. You know it's not
- 32:47Speaker 1: Iowa obviously, So I think I'm just I'm gonna I'm
- 32:52Speaker 1: not gonna put any expectations on myself. If it comes
- 32:55Speaker 1: down to last hunt, last day, and there's a doe
- 32:59Speaker 1: standing at ten yards twenty yards from my stand, I'm
- 33:03Speaker 1: sending an arrow her way. I guarantee that I would
- 33:06Speaker 1: love to walk away from that with something. And I
- 33:12Speaker 1: think that that would be a great you know, in
- 33:15Speaker 1: a way, it would be a great success. Now, what
- 33:18Speaker 1: about a buck? What's it going to take to send
- 33:20Speaker 1: an arrow at a buck? Let's say day one versus
- 33:23Speaker 1: Dave four or three or whatever it is. Man, I
- 33:28Speaker 1: have to I have to answer that question by asking
- 33:30Speaker 1: you a question, right, So you know, I have the
- 33:36Speaker 1: luxury of hunting in a state that is known for
- 33:38Speaker 1: a higher age class, it's known for big antlers. It's
- 33:41Speaker 1: you know, I talk about that a lot. I talk
- 33:44Speaker 1: about how you know I passed this deer, but the
- 33:48Speaker 1: playing field necessarily isn't the same in Michigan. So if hey,
- 33:54Speaker 1: I don't, I don't necessarily want to piss people off.
- 33:56Speaker 1: You know, obviously I want to hunt my hunt. But
- 34:00Speaker 1: if I if I shoot a four cohorn or if
- 34:03Speaker 1: I shoot like a fifty inch six pointer or whatever,
- 34:08Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know, like I would love to,
- 34:12Speaker 1: but I don't know if that would make me look
- 34:14Speaker 1: bad and and being like, oh, this dude's a hypocrite,
- 34:18Speaker 1: or if I'm if I'm passing a three year old
- 34:21Speaker 1: in Iowa, but I'm not passing a two or three
- 34:23Speaker 1: year old in Michigan. I guess that's see what you're saying. Yeah, Um,
- 34:27Speaker 1: I mean I wouldn't feel bad about it because everyone's
- 34:30Speaker 1: got a hunter on hunt. And when you're on out
- 34:32Speaker 1: of state hunt and you're just exploring a new place,
- 34:35Speaker 1: and I mean I get that. I would like when
- 34:38Speaker 1: I went to Minnesota last year on that hunt, very
- 34:41Speaker 1: different experience, had no idea what to expect, new would
- 34:45Speaker 1: be low deer densities. I was going to take whatever
- 34:47Speaker 1: buck I saw. Um. But when I'm in Iowa or
- 34:51Speaker 1: when I'm hunting, like the spots in Michigan that I
- 34:53Speaker 1: know really well and I've hunted for a long time,
- 34:55Speaker 1: I've got different goals and expectations. So I mean, I
- 35:00Speaker 1: I would tell you that Michigan's age structure is definitely
- 35:06Speaker 1: different than I was, big time, very very different. But
- 35:09Speaker 1: it's getting better, Like from when I first started trying
- 35:12Speaker 1: to target mature bucks to where it is now, it's
- 35:16Speaker 1: definitely better. Like more and more people are passing on
- 35:18Speaker 1: younger bucks. You're seeing older deer more often. Um. But
- 35:22Speaker 1: it's it's it's leaps and bounds different than Iowa, Ohio
- 35:26Speaker 1: or Kansas. Um. I mean, as you've heard me talk about,
- 35:29Speaker 1: I would say I hunt a couple of pretty good spots.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Pretty good spots for Michigan is not the best. It's
- 35:34Speaker 1: not like a thousand acre managed farms. But I've got
- 35:37Speaker 1: a couple of small sixties seven I've got a couple
- 35:40Speaker 1: of good spots that are between sixty four and ninety
- 35:43Speaker 1: acres or so. And you know I'm seeing one to
- 35:48Speaker 1: like on one property, like the back Ford right there's
- 35:50Speaker 1: one mature buck I saw um and then got trail
- 35:53Speaker 1: camera pictures of a couple. Others never saw them, but
- 35:55Speaker 1: I did get pictures on the other main Michigan spoy.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I spent a lot of time on um. You know,
- 36:01Speaker 1: I had two three year olds that I saw and
- 36:04Speaker 1: passed on, and then one buck that I thought was four. Um.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Of all these deer though nothing I mean if we're
- 36:12Speaker 1: talking like antler size, nothing more than like one thirties
- 36:15Speaker 1: mid one thirties. UM. And then another farm my hunt,
- 36:20Speaker 1: another property area I hunt, you know, uh, one three
- 36:23Speaker 1: year old, couple two year olds, that kind of thing.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Um So, I would tell you I think most people
- 36:29Speaker 1: around here would point to a three year old and
- 36:33Speaker 1: or pope and young type buck, depending on what criteria
- 36:36Speaker 1: you want to look at, as being like a top
- 36:37Speaker 1: tier buck. Um So, if you somehow shot a three
- 36:41Speaker 1: year old or a pope and young buck on your
- 36:43Speaker 1: pop on your public plan hunt, that would be like
- 36:45Speaker 1: a super Bowl win I would consider for you. That'd
- 36:48Speaker 1: be huge, to be amazing. It'd be it's possible. I
- 36:51Speaker 1: would not tell it's not impossible, it's totally possible, but
- 36:54Speaker 1: it would be a huge win to do that. Um
- 36:57Speaker 1: even to kill a two year old, would I would say, like, damn,
- 37:00Speaker 1: that's pretty good man, if you killed the two year old.
- 37:02Speaker 1: If I walk into Michigan and kill a two or
- 37:05Speaker 1: three year old, and I hate to put it, uh
- 37:08Speaker 1: a rack size on it, but at the one mark pointer,
- 37:14Speaker 1: I feel like that's that would be a win. Yeah.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I would be stoked. Even if I mean, even for
- 37:20Speaker 1: me to kill public land in type Buck that's three
- 37:24Speaker 1: years old, I'd be really stoked. And I live here.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Um So yeah, man, I think that's totally doable. I
- 37:30Speaker 1: don't know which area you're gonna end up choosing, but
- 37:32Speaker 1: the two areas that you and I have talked about
- 37:34Speaker 1: that I know of and that I have history with
- 37:37Speaker 1: totally possible in either one of those spots. Um. So
- 37:42Speaker 1: that said, you could jack to play the game, and
- 37:46Speaker 1: that's that's the thing. Yeah, You're just gonna be excited
- 37:48Speaker 1: about the game in the process, and as long as
- 37:50Speaker 1: you enjoy that, then it's all gonna be good. Yeah.
- 37:53Speaker 1: All right, we gotta take a quick break here to
- 37:55Speaker 1: thank our friends over at Lacrosse Boots. I was just
- 37:58Speaker 1: out yesterday helping a friend do some scouting on a property,
- 38:02Speaker 1: and the boot of choice was the Navigator series. The
- 38:06Speaker 1: wind Rose boot from the Navigator series of Lacrosse that
- 38:08Speaker 1: is their new lace up line of boots. These are
- 38:12Speaker 1: comfortable for longer hikes, for preseason work like what I
- 38:16Speaker 1: was doing. Anytime you're gonna be putting some miles on
- 38:18Speaker 1: the boots, these are a great option. Still waterproof, still comfortable,
- 38:23Speaker 1: still going to be like get you into the tree
- 38:25Speaker 1: if you have to, or hiking in the woods, whatever
- 38:27Speaker 1: kind of plan you have in place, These boots seem
- 38:31Speaker 1: to be a great option. If you want to learn
- 38:33Speaker 1: more about those or anything else from Lacrosse, visit Lacrosse
- 38:36Speaker 1: Footwear dot com. How many people think US hunters are
- 38:41Speaker 1: crazy when especially the hardcore guys, when we're sitting I
- 38:47Speaker 1: take off the satellite imagery. Once I find a place
- 38:49Speaker 1: that I want to hunt, I take off the satellite
- 38:51Speaker 1: imagery and I'm just looking at lines on a screen
- 38:55Speaker 1: and I'm just like evaluating that in my head. Okay,
- 38:58Speaker 1: this is how I've seen de or moved through terrain.
- 39:02Speaker 1: How many people are just like, dude, that that's some
- 39:04Speaker 1: crazy people stuff. Well, we are crazy, Dan, We definitely are. Um. Interestingly,
- 39:10Speaker 1: the two areas that we've been talking about. Both of
- 39:13Speaker 1: them are much hillier than almost anywhere else in Michigan.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Um So you those if you end up settenly on
- 39:20Speaker 1: one of those two areas, you're going to have more
- 39:22Speaker 1: terrain features than most Most of Michigan, at least the
- 39:24Speaker 1: Lower Peninsula is is pretty darned flat, open farm country.
- 39:29Speaker 1: But those two chunks have a nice amount of topography
- 39:32Speaker 1: that will funnel deer movement, that will allow you to
- 39:36Speaker 1: make some guesses about deer bedding based on ridges and
- 39:39Speaker 1: stuff like that. That's not super common around here. Um
- 39:42Speaker 1: So that's why I think those are those are pretty cool.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Are you Are you still thinking about one of those
- 39:46Speaker 1: two or are you looking at anything different? Uh? So, yes,
- 39:51Speaker 1: But I found a piece and I'm really interested in
- 39:53Speaker 1: this place. I'm not going to give too much detail
- 39:56Speaker 1: on it, but I think I could ba door it.
- 40:01Speaker 1: So basically, here's what I'm looking at. I'll just tell
- 40:04Speaker 1: you what I'm looking for. I'm obviously looking for any
- 40:06Speaker 1: piece of public right now. Then I'm looking at the
- 40:09Speaker 1: time of year that I'm going around. You know, I'm
- 40:11Speaker 1: gonna be hunting there early October, so I'm looking for
- 40:13Speaker 1: an egg field that borders it, maybe a private egg
- 40:16Speaker 1: field that that borders it. Then I'm looking at access
- 40:20Speaker 1: points on this piece of public where this access is,
- 40:24Speaker 1: and so far I haven't found any of these giant
- 40:28Speaker 1: pieces where you're walking miles and miles to get in. However,
- 40:32Speaker 1: I'm looking for us obstacles that I could possibly go through,
- 40:38Speaker 1: like streams or rivers or creeks or or marsh where
- 40:43Speaker 1: I can back door it and get something coming to
- 40:48Speaker 1: one of these pieces of private ground that it's gonna
- 40:52Speaker 1: take some effort to just number one get back there.
- 40:55Speaker 1: So you know, I'll be hunting a corner or you know,
- 40:58Speaker 1: off of a field edge or chline that may have
- 41:02Speaker 1: some obstacle between the parking lot and the private ground. Right,
- 41:07Speaker 1: so there's there's these little slivers that might be hard
- 41:09Speaker 1: to get to. So that's kind of what I'm looking for.
- 41:12Speaker 1: And then I'm basically just leaving way points there so
- 41:14Speaker 1: I can come back and look look at it. That's
- 41:17Speaker 1: I think that's a good that's a good way to
- 41:20Speaker 1: approach it. Um, I think that makes sense for these
- 41:22Speaker 1: kinds of spots I know of. UM, some of my
- 41:26Speaker 1: own hunts in some of these places and a couple
- 41:27Speaker 1: of buddies that, um that exactly what you're describing has worked,
- 41:32Speaker 1: where finding a crop field that's got bucks in, especially
- 41:36Speaker 1: pre opening day, and then looking back from that into
- 41:39Speaker 1: the public land to try to figure out where that
- 41:41Speaker 1: buck betting area is, and then back during in between it.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Um is exactly how a mutual friend of ours killed
- 41:48Speaker 1: a nice buck. I'm one of these pieces and uh,
- 41:50Speaker 1: and it's how I've tried to a handful of times
- 41:53Speaker 1: I've gone in there, um and I have seen some
- 41:57Speaker 1: you know, like possible three year old, possible one to
- 42:00Speaker 1: any type bucks in adjacent private land fields to these
- 42:04Speaker 1: places that we're talking about. Um, so they're they're in
- 42:08Speaker 1: the area that kind of buck. Um, it's just a
- 42:11Speaker 1: matter of getting a swing at them. And I don't
- 42:13Speaker 1: think that you're making a bad decision with that early season. Um,
- 42:16Speaker 1: the rut you know, great, but there's will be a
- 42:18Speaker 1: bunch of hunters out there. I think you've got a
- 42:20Speaker 1: chance to have less pressure and the deer are gonna
- 42:22Speaker 1: be more comfortable that that opening day hunt is going
- 42:26Speaker 1: to be like a great, great opportunity. Um. I would
- 42:29Speaker 1: swing for the fences with that first time, like pick
- 42:31Speaker 1: your best spot probably, um, and go for it because
- 42:35Speaker 1: you've got a really good chance. I think that first day.
- 42:37Speaker 1: What's the let me let me feel you out here. Right.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Let's say there's a farmer who his property butts up
- 42:45Speaker 1: next to public land, but he doesn't necessarily have any
- 42:49Speaker 1: timber on it. It's all egg from your experience. Do
- 42:54Speaker 1: do people let you walk through their fields to backdoor?
- 42:57Speaker 1: So I'm not necessari if I walk up to a
- 43:00Speaker 1: or I have a couple of places like this in Iowa,
- 43:02Speaker 1: and I don't want to hunt your property. I just
- 43:04Speaker 1: want to walk through it to get to the public Yep.
- 43:08Speaker 1: I mean it's totally fifty fifty. There will absolutely people
- 43:12Speaker 1: that will be okay with that. But so many places
- 43:17Speaker 1: are bow hunted that you're gonna have a whole lot
- 43:19Speaker 1: of them that they said, Well, I've got guys that
- 43:21Speaker 1: are gonna be out there hunting. I don't want to
- 43:22Speaker 1: mess up their hunt. Um, but it can't hurt to
- 43:25Speaker 1: ask I had. I've had one person give me permission
- 43:29Speaker 1: to do that. Um, others have not. But it's worth
- 43:34Speaker 1: a shot. I mean, it's definitely a good idea. Are
- 43:36Speaker 1: you are you planning on? Um? What's your plan as
- 43:39Speaker 1: far as mornings and evenings, you're gona hunt every chance
- 43:41Speaker 1: you can, or you're gonna start What are you thinking there,
- 43:44Speaker 1: I'm hunting everything. I think that's I mean, if I
- 43:47Speaker 1: was in Iowa, I probably would lay off early season
- 43:50Speaker 1: mornings unless I had actual trail camera data that's telling
- 43:54Speaker 1: me you need to go hunt right now. But because
- 43:57Speaker 1: this is a short time frame and only time you
- 44:00Speaker 1: can kill a deer's when you're actually in a tree stand,
- 44:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna hunt mornings and evenings. Yeah, I think I
- 44:08Speaker 1: think that's I think that's smart. I think in in
- 44:10Speaker 1: that circumstance, i'd do the same thing. Um your first
- 44:14Speaker 1: night so here, I like, I'm really glad that you're
- 44:16Speaker 1: going to come in a night beforehand and scout. Um,
- 44:19Speaker 1: will you allow me to help you at least scout
- 44:22Speaker 1: that night unless I've got something going. If I if
- 44:24Speaker 1: I can get free, I'd love to be able to
- 44:26Speaker 1: provide at least a second set of eyes on a
- 44:28Speaker 1: different place. You get a cute a few places, um,
- 44:32Speaker 1: because I'd be so huge if we can find a
- 44:35Speaker 1: nice buck or some deer that are on some adjacent
- 44:39Speaker 1: private that will help so much. Just helping you pinpoint
- 44:42Speaker 1: where to get in at. Yeah, and I have. I
- 44:45Speaker 1: don't know about you, but you know I've done these
- 44:48Speaker 1: elk hunts. I've done these mules your hunts now where
- 44:50Speaker 1: you're you're constantly figuring things out as you go. But
- 44:56Speaker 1: with my Iowa hunts, right yes, I'm mobile. I already
- 45:00Speaker 1: know where I need to go because I've been on
- 45:02Speaker 1: the property before. What I'm really excited about is this
- 45:06Speaker 1: like an early season grind, if that makes sense right
- 45:10Speaker 1: where it's I'm doing the same stuff that I would
- 45:12Speaker 1: do during the rut, but I'm doing it early season.
- 45:16Speaker 1: There's gonna be a lot more vegetation. But I think
- 45:19Speaker 1: what's what's gonna what I'm excited about is instead of
- 45:24Speaker 1: laying off on an observation hunt, I probably won't do
- 45:28Speaker 1: any observation hunts. I'm gonna go straight gut, I'm gonna
- 45:31Speaker 1: find the sign, and I'm gonna set up right over
- 45:33Speaker 1: top of it, not necessarily any field edges, but doing
- 45:37Speaker 1: what I do in Iowa, you know, I don't hunt
- 45:39Speaker 1: the field that just go in, but just go in
- 45:41Speaker 1: that much further and be aggressive on every hunt, and
- 45:44Speaker 1: if I bump something, at least I know where this
- 45:48Speaker 1: deer went. And I know when you know whatever, can
- 45:52Speaker 1: I can I give you a little bit of, um,
- 45:55Speaker 1: a little bit of Michigan insight, Okay, on a few
- 45:59Speaker 1: things on those lines. So I'm thinking about like how
- 46:02Speaker 1: you're being aggressive and going in and trying to get
- 46:04Speaker 1: tight to stuff. Um So, like I said, there's not
- 46:08Speaker 1: as much of the hilly country as you have in Iowa,
- 46:10Speaker 1: so you're gonna depending on where you pick, there's gonna
- 46:14Speaker 1: be more betting. Particularly buck betting is usually going to
- 46:19Speaker 1: be I think in the areas you're looking at, it's
- 46:21Speaker 1: probably gonna be on points extending into swampy stuff or
- 46:26Speaker 1: islands in the swamp. Um that's usually like the best
- 46:30Speaker 1: buck bed stuff around here. Um. Now, you might get
- 46:34Speaker 1: to a spot where there's some hilly stuff, but most
- 46:36Speaker 1: of the hilly stuff around here, though, it's pretty wide open,
- 46:39Speaker 1: and a lot of that public land has trails along
- 46:41Speaker 1: the tops of the ridges and stuff, so there might
- 46:43Speaker 1: be less betting on those than you might otherwise think.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Um So not I'm making generalities here, generalizations, but um,
- 46:51Speaker 1: I would really focus on those swamp points and islands.
- 46:54Speaker 1: That's just like dynamite buck betting and a lot of
- 46:56Speaker 1: these Michigan spots. So think about that when you when
- 47:00Speaker 1: you find your food source that you like and you're
- 47:02Speaker 1: trying to go back from their backtrack from there and okay,
- 47:04Speaker 1: figure out where they're betted. Look for spots like that. UM.
- 47:08Speaker 1: And then the other thing I tell you is when
- 47:12Speaker 1: it comes to like pressure, like there's gonna be hunting pressure,
- 47:14Speaker 1: there are gonna be other hunters. UM. It can be variable,
- 47:18Speaker 1: like you might get out, it might get to the
- 47:19Speaker 1: only spot, especially the first place we talked about. You
- 47:22Speaker 1: might get out there and there might not be anyone there.
- 47:24Speaker 1: It might be all yours, But at the same time,
- 47:26Speaker 1: there might also be guys never parking lot. I don't know. UM.
- 47:30Speaker 1: I would have a minimum of three to four backup plans. UM, like, Okay,
- 47:38Speaker 1: here's my spot, I want to check out first. If
- 47:41Speaker 1: there's people that are there, Okay, then I gotta plan B.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Then I gotta plan C. Then I got a plan D.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Like I had a day last October where I literally
- 47:48Speaker 1: had to go to my fourth spot for an evening
- 47:49Speaker 1: on I went out, Oh, there's three guys that went
- 47:51Speaker 1: to my number two, two guys that went to this one,
- 47:53Speaker 1: three guys that are hiked into a spot ran by
- 47:56Speaker 1: two other people in tree stands. Um so, so I
- 48:00Speaker 1: would have a whole list. I have like ten and
- 48:03Speaker 1: and just so you you do never find yourself like,
- 48:05Speaker 1: oh shoot, where am I going to go? Um? That
- 48:10Speaker 1: would be that would be a big recommendation. So I
- 48:13Speaker 1: like your ideas of scouting the fields the night before,
- 48:16Speaker 1: having a bunch of spots of backdoor and them through
- 48:18Speaker 1: tough to access places. I think that's smart. Um. Let
- 48:22Speaker 1: me ask you a question. What about are there on
- 48:28Speaker 1: the Michigan public Are they allowed to drive four wheelers
- 48:32Speaker 1: or trucks into it? So most all the spots that
- 48:36Speaker 1: we're talking about, no, so you shouldn't have anyone driving
- 48:40Speaker 1: in there. On that stuff. There will be like mountain
- 48:42Speaker 1: bikes though, and I don't know what the e bike
- 48:44Speaker 1: rules are tell you the truth, I'm unsure about that.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Um So, I wouldn't worry about trucks though in the
- 48:51Speaker 1: spots we've looked at. Um what else? Uh, if you're
- 48:59Speaker 1: leaving up to restands, they're supposed to be labeled with
- 49:02Speaker 1: your name and information on it. That's a little thing
- 49:04Speaker 1: to keep. I know you're probably gonna be running a gunning.
- 49:06Speaker 1: But if you decide to leave one up for a
- 49:08Speaker 1: couple of days for some reason, that's what you're supposed
- 49:12Speaker 1: to do. UM. I don't know what other things like
- 49:16Speaker 1: high level would be helpful. I don't know what other
- 49:18Speaker 1: things are you wondering about that I might be able
- 49:20Speaker 1: to give you some insight too, you know, I really don't.
- 49:24Speaker 1: I really don't know at this point. I, like I said,
- 49:26Speaker 1: I'm I'm still in straight up scouting mode. UM. Obviously
- 49:29Speaker 1: only digital scouting can only only tell you so much.
- 49:32Speaker 1: But I'm just looking for corners. I'm looking for, you know,
- 49:37Speaker 1: especially inside corners right where the the property is on
- 49:42Speaker 1: the outside of it and the field might go into
- 49:47Speaker 1: the private or excuse me, the private field might go
- 49:50Speaker 1: into the public. And looking for those corners. UM. I've
- 49:54Speaker 1: seen deer throughout the years take advantage of those places. UM.
- 49:58Speaker 1: But a lot of it has to do you know,
- 50:00Speaker 1: just be straight up. Um. You know, once once I
- 50:05Speaker 1: get there, once I get the boots on the ground,
- 50:07Speaker 1: I'll find out more information. But it's funny that you
- 50:10Speaker 1: mentioned these islands and these peninsulas into marshes, because I
- 50:15Speaker 1: have let see one, two, three, four points marked on
- 50:23Speaker 1: this one piece of public that I've been scouting already
- 50:25Speaker 1: that are exactly what you said they are. It's like
- 50:29Speaker 1: a point that leads into public or a point that
- 50:32Speaker 1: leads into a marsh. So most of these spots that
- 50:36Speaker 1: get protected his public land here in Michigan, they're they're
- 50:39Speaker 1: usually the spots that couldn't be farmed, and the spots
- 50:42Speaker 1: that couldn't be farmed are the wet stuff. So a
- 50:44Speaker 1: lot of the stuff that we have is public is
- 50:46Speaker 1: super swampy um, which which is good because that's the
- 50:50Speaker 1: stuff that most hunters don't want to go into. So
- 50:53Speaker 1: you've got you have the possibility to hold some deer um.
- 50:57Speaker 1: I know we've talked about this before, but even when
- 50:58Speaker 1: I'm looking for private into hunting Michigan, I almost always
- 51:01Speaker 1: been trying to get something with a big swamp because
- 51:03Speaker 1: that is like sometimes the only place where buck can
- 51:06Speaker 1: survive a gun season. So definitely keen in on that. Um.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Oh crap, I had something I was just oh, man,
- 51:16Speaker 1: I knew what I was going to ask you. I
- 51:17Speaker 1: think you may have answered it in a text message.
- 51:19Speaker 1: But am I allowed to pull my truck into a
- 51:23Speaker 1: parking lot and sleep there overnight? Yeah? So I actually
- 51:27Speaker 1: I didn't respond to that question because I don't know. Um,
- 51:30Speaker 1: I think the answer is probably no. Actually I'm unsure,
- 51:34Speaker 1: but I do know that there are campgrounds um near
- 51:39Speaker 1: some of these places where you can camp, but you
- 51:42Speaker 1: have to pay the camping fee. Um. But yeah, I
- 51:45Speaker 1: I can point to to a couple of close campgrounds
- 51:47Speaker 1: to some of these places that Oh, I know what
- 51:50Speaker 1: I was gonna tell you. Um, let me write this
- 51:52Speaker 1: down before I forget. Yeah, so camping options are relatively
- 51:59Speaker 1: close to some of those places that we talked about.
- 52:01Speaker 1: And also if you are hunting in some spots that
- 52:04Speaker 1: are kind of close to me, like I told you,
- 52:06Speaker 1: you're always welcome to camp at my place too. Yeah.
- 52:11Speaker 1: So the other thing I was thinking about this is
- 52:13Speaker 1: kind of a hot tip that I use a lot
- 52:15Speaker 1: here in Michigan. Um, it just takes some legwork that
- 52:19Speaker 1: most people probably don't want to do, but in Michigan
- 52:23Speaker 1: we're very dependent on other folks. Managing was similar, with
- 52:29Speaker 1: a similar mindset to get to the point to have
- 52:31Speaker 1: some older box and bigger box. So the good spots
- 52:34Speaker 1: of Michigan are usually good because either no one's allowed
- 52:37Speaker 1: to hunt around it or be there's a bunch of
- 52:41Speaker 1: landowners or a bunch of like minded people that have
- 52:43Speaker 1: all decided to pass on younger deer um. And so
- 52:48Speaker 1: in Michigan we have I think the highest number of
- 52:51Speaker 1: q d m A co ops in the nation, so
- 52:54Speaker 1: co ops as you know, Dan, or these groups of
- 52:57Speaker 1: landowners that decide, hey, we're all going to kind of
- 52:59Speaker 1: manage our deer hunting, our deer populations somewhat similarly, and
- 53:03Speaker 1: we're all gonna work to try to pass on your
- 53:04Speaker 1: year and a half olds or two and a half
- 53:06Speaker 1: year olds or whatever it is. Um. So there's a
- 53:08Speaker 1: bunch of these scattered all around the state. And something
- 53:12Speaker 1: that I've done when trying to hunt public land around
- 53:14Speaker 1: here or trying to find new private land hunt is
- 53:17Speaker 1: trying to find pieces that are close to those or
- 53:20Speaker 1: adjacent to those, or in that zone where there's a
- 53:24Speaker 1: better chance than otherwise that people are passing on younger
- 53:28Speaker 1: deer um. So I would look up qu to MC coops,
- 53:31Speaker 1: find out where some of those are, and see if
- 53:33Speaker 1: there's any of that are near public land you can hunt.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Another thing I do that's kind of creepy, but I
- 53:38Speaker 1: do it. I did this when I was trying to
- 53:40Speaker 1: find the back forty property to to buy that. And
- 53:42Speaker 1: then also when I'm looking for just places to ask
- 53:44Speaker 1: permission or anything, I would you know, google the area
- 53:48Speaker 1: and names of people that own land around there, or
- 53:51Speaker 1: hunters and look on Facebook or look on Google and
- 53:54Speaker 1: try to see if people have posted pictures of deer
- 53:57Speaker 1: they shot around there, or if there's been a news
- 53:59Speaker 1: article about a big buck that was shot around here,
- 54:02Speaker 1: or if there's a buck pole picture for the QT
- 54:05Speaker 1: make co Op in that area. Different things like that
- 54:07Speaker 1: can just give you an idea like, oh, yeah, this
- 54:09Speaker 1: area is pretty decent, or oh wow, this property that's
- 54:12Speaker 1: right next to that piece of public land. That dude
- 54:15Speaker 1: posted a picture of two four year olds he shot
- 54:17Speaker 1: last year. That's interesting. UM. Basically Facebook, yeah, Facebook, Instagram,
- 54:23Speaker 1: Google stock these areas, UM, it's it really can help. UM.
- 54:28Speaker 1: I think that's something that is worth doing if you're
- 54:30Speaker 1: trying to come in and find a new place, figure
- 54:32Speaker 1: out if it's worth spending some time. UM. Now I
- 54:35Speaker 1: can tell you, based off my own previous stocking that
- 54:38Speaker 1: the two areas we've talked about I have potential for
- 54:41Speaker 1: those reasons. UM, but you might find some other spots
- 54:44Speaker 1: similarly to that too, So that's something for you to
- 54:46Speaker 1: keep in mind and for other people in other states whatever.
- 54:48Speaker 1: I mean, I think that's something you can do anywhere,
- 54:50Speaker 1: um and help a little bit. Yeah. I don't know, man,
- 54:54Speaker 1: I'm just you know, every time, whether it's an elk
- 54:58Speaker 1: hunt or a mule er hunt or now this hunt,
- 55:02Speaker 1: I just keep going back to the excitement of planning.
- 55:06Speaker 1: I don't like, if if there was another job out
- 55:09Speaker 1: there other than doing what I'm doing, I think it
- 55:11Speaker 1: would help people playing hunts, right, and just it was like,
- 55:16Speaker 1: you know, like, hey, man, um, I'm gonna gonna draw
- 55:18Speaker 1: an Iowa tag and I want public ground or I'm
- 55:21Speaker 1: gonna draw this state. I help them go out and
- 55:25Speaker 1: achieve that, like kind of what this conversation is right now, right,
- 55:28Speaker 1: I think that would be so cool just to al right,
- 55:30Speaker 1: so I'm looking at this terrain right here, you might
- 55:33Speaker 1: want to do this and this, this this, you know, hey,
- 55:35Speaker 1: this guy does this whatever. I don't know. It's funny
- 55:39Speaker 1: mentioned that because honestly, like, I have this boost of
- 55:42Speaker 1: excitement because I'm getting to do that with you right now.
- 55:45Speaker 1: So I totally get what you're saying, because that is
- 55:46Speaker 1: so much fun. Um he Speaking of camping places, what's
- 55:51Speaker 1: your plan like camping set up? Are you gonna do
- 55:54Speaker 1: a tent or you to sleep out of your truck?
- 55:56Speaker 1: Are you bring a camper? What's your thoughts there? Yeah,
- 56:00Speaker 1: I'll probably Um, I got a top around my truck,
- 56:04Speaker 1: so I think I'm just gonna stuff all my stuff
- 56:06Speaker 1: in the back and you know, cook my meals inside
- 56:10Speaker 1: the cab. If it's nice out, you know, be outside.
- 56:14Speaker 1: If I go to a campground, I'm still gonna I'm
- 56:16Speaker 1: gonna bring my tent with me just in case. But
- 56:19Speaker 1: I think just camping out of my truck is the best.
- 56:22Speaker 1: You know, sleeping in the back is just gonna be
- 56:24Speaker 1: the best thing because I don't have to set up
- 56:26Speaker 1: or tear down anything. Just wake up, eat my breakfast,
- 56:30Speaker 1: get after it. Yeah. Man, that's that's my favorite too.
- 56:34Speaker 1: I think that's it's you're so mobile that way, you're
- 56:36Speaker 1: not stuck in any place. So when you set up
- 56:39Speaker 1: the tent, and not that I don't do this sometimes,
- 56:41Speaker 1: but when you set the tent, you're a little bit
- 56:44Speaker 1: burdened or you're a little bit locked in, Like the
- 56:46Speaker 1: you just have this new feeling like I don't really
- 56:50Speaker 1: want to tear it down, all this stuff and go
- 56:52Speaker 1: to a new place. But when it's always in your truck,
- 56:54Speaker 1: if stuff isn't going good after the day and a
- 56:56Speaker 1: half or two days, you're like, whatever, let's just go
- 56:58Speaker 1: to the next spot. Ums, nothing holding you down. So
- 57:01Speaker 1: I like that truck camper camping lifestyle for this kind
- 57:06Speaker 1: of hunt. Um so so that and just you know,
- 57:11Speaker 1: other than the potential to maybe have some electricity at
- 57:17Speaker 1: some point, you know, like I don't know, charge my
- 57:20Speaker 1: osonics or you know, charge my phone or something like that,
- 57:24Speaker 1: I might, I might take you up on I don't
- 57:27Speaker 1: know your your garage or something like that. But other
- 57:30Speaker 1: other than that, man, I think it's pretty self sufficient,
- 57:33Speaker 1: especially on that time frame, you know, really just three days,
- 57:37Speaker 1: I'll be able to have a cooler of food that
- 57:39Speaker 1: that will last me, uh deer salami and cheese and
- 57:43Speaker 1: maybe a couple of beers and water, and I don't
- 57:47Speaker 1: necessarily need to take a shower, you know, just like
- 57:49Speaker 1: kind of a Western hunt and go for it. I
- 57:54Speaker 1: love it. I love it. That's a lot of fun.
- 57:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'll bug you to use my shower and
- 58:00Speaker 1: to eat good food. If you're willing to take it,
- 58:02Speaker 1: but I also fully support your dirt bag lifestyle of
- 58:05Speaker 1: choices to right there. You know how it is, though,
- 58:08Speaker 1: there's there's something about going out and doing it all
- 58:14Speaker 1: by yourself that it's not like I don't want to
- 58:18Speaker 1: hang out with people, but I I just want to.
- 58:24Speaker 1: I don't know, there's this this solitude that we all
- 58:28Speaker 1: kind of and and not the quarantine solitude, but like
- 58:31Speaker 1: the solitude right just like go out and be closer
- 58:36Speaker 1: to nature and be by ourselves. And I don't know,
- 58:40Speaker 1: it's like I I long for that kind of thing. Uh,
- 58:44Speaker 1: right there with you? What do you think we should
- 58:46Speaker 1: do as far as covering this, Um, I feel like
- 58:49Speaker 1: we should do at a minimum a pre hunt podcast
- 58:53Speaker 1: and a post hunt podcast. But I wonder if it
- 58:56Speaker 1: to do like a daily breakdown. I'm sure you're gonna
- 58:58Speaker 1: do your own thing, but I wonder if we could
- 59:00Speaker 1: do some stuff together kind of to to capture it
- 59:03Speaker 1: in a special way. I think what we should do
- 59:06Speaker 1: is the day that I come into Michigan, I'm gonna
- 59:10Speaker 1: I'll go scout or we can go scout together or whatever.
- 59:14Speaker 1: Then we do a podcast after we do like a
- 59:18Speaker 1: morning or afternoon of scouting. Yep, Okay, we do that
- 59:22Speaker 1: and maybe halfway through the hunt we can do a
- 59:24Speaker 1: touch base and then after the three days we do
- 59:27Speaker 1: a full one. Yeah, that works for me. Um, I
- 59:31Speaker 1: think it's gonna be fun. I think it's be awesome,
- 59:33Speaker 1: and uh, I gotta I don't know. There's there's nothing
- 59:38Speaker 1: I enjoy. There's a few things I enjoy more than
- 59:43Speaker 1: when you've got a group of buddies that are all
- 59:44Speaker 1: at hunting and then someone has some success and then
- 59:48Speaker 1: you get the phone call and everyone's gonna come out
- 59:50Speaker 1: and help track or help with whatever it is. Like
- 59:53Speaker 1: that group, that that excuse for some camaraderie during hunting seasons.
- 59:57Speaker 1: Like my one of my very favorite things absolutely how
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: far does further to live from you? About an hour?
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: An hour? Okay? So he definitely is in in range. Um,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: And you know our buddy Andy mayor buddy Andy Bradley,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Dusty Corey, all those guys are right in this general zone.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: So you'll we're gonna have to bug you at least
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: one night with beers in the campfire or something. Yeah.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I'm up for I'm up for just about anything. Man.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I I uh, I don't know, I'm it's just another
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: hunt to get excited about. You know. One thing to
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: keep in mind, this is a little bit of a
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: jump from stuff to be excited about, but something you
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: will have to take into account if you do shoot
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: a deer. You know, we've got c W D REGs here. Um,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: So if you shoot a buck, you're gonna have to
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: keep it out and either drop everything off at a
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: taxidermist if you end up wanting to do amount. I
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: maybe if you shoot some huge old gagger buck and
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: you want to get him mounted, you'll have to drop
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: it off at a taxidermist here in um within the
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: county because you can't cross out of the CTBD counties
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: to to do that. UM. Or you can cut off
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: the antlers and remove all the brain tissue, all tissue
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: and stuff off it, so you just have the skull
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: plate in the antlers. You can take that out and
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: you can take de boned meat out um. But otherwise
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: you'd have to do it within the Little Couple county region. Yeah,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: deal with all that. Yeah, if I shoot a deer,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: I probably just debone it all right there. Um, Can
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: I have it processed out of state? Like I can
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: take all the meat out of off the bone, yep,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: package it and then I can take it back to
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Iowa and use my yes, my process okay, yep. So
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: if you de bone everything, um, you're good. You'll just
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: have to it would be a good idea to get
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: it tested. Um. That would be like the smart thing
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: to do would be to drop off the head or
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: stop at a check station where they can remove the
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: lymph notes to get tested, just to be on the
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: safe side, um, and to kind of do our part
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: for uh citizen science. Um. But then yes, you could.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: You could take the skull cap and the antlers, and
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: you could take the boneless meat and take off with
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: all that stuff, and you'll be good to go. All
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: your deer get tested. Yep. I'm doing testing forever for everything.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Though no positive um so in the county that I'm in, Uh,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: there's not been a positive yet. But there's a county
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: adjacent to us where there is positives. Um so. Um.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: One of the spots you and I have talked about
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: should be pretty far from where the CWD stuff is.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: One of them is a little bit closer, um, But
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: neither one of them, neither one I think, is in
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: a county yet it's they're both adjacent. Um, but still
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: smart to just be safe. Absolutely. Um. But yeah, it's
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: it's a little bit of added regulation, but it's not
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: a huge inconvenience. The whole process is really easy. I've
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: done it multiple times now. You just if it's a dough,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: you just head in there, you cut the head off,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: put it in a bag, put in a box, and
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: fill out a quick form and or there'll be people
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: there they can help you do all that. Sometimes it's
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: just a drop stations. Sometimes there's people there to help
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: you with all that stuff. It takes less than five minutes.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: So not a big deal at all. Yeah, cool man. Um. Yeah,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: So Michigan, I'm pretty excited about it. I'm gonna keep
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: doing my uh obviously, i love talking to people. I'm
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna keep doing my digital scouting and anybody
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: who's listening out there who you know. I'm not looking
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: for places to hunt necessarily, I can do that on
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: my own, but I just love communicating with people who,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: let's say, hunt Michigan and have maybe tips and tricks
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: about you know, like this. This whole marsh hunting is
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: new to me because I don't hunt very many marshes
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: here in Iowa. Most of it either if it's wet,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: it's a river bottom type ground. Right, So just talking
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: strategy with people or you know, hey, don't maybe there's
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: a regulation that I need to know about or something,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: you know, just like just like an open conversation with people,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: is you know more than welcome. Well, uh, I'm sure
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: you'll get a lot of help from people. And I
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: know a lot of folks are excited to, uh, to
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: welcome you to the land of the I don't know
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: what it is. Not the land of the giants. It's
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: the land of the of the some opportunity we'll call
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what. When I
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: think of when I think of Michigan, I think of
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: a a state that has a deep tradition in hunting
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: and fishing. Um. Then another state that comes to mind
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: right off the top of my head is Wisconsin. Right.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: So I think of Michigan as people who love to
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: hunt and fish and take advantage of all these opportunities
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: that we have in front of us, and who are
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: sportsman at heart. And I'm excited to go hunt where
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: these people hunt. Yeah, the only regret I have about
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: this is that I wish you could get up to
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: our northern Michigan deer camp and experience that, because that
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: that is the essence of Michigan hunting tradition up there,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: getting out in the date in the big woods. It's
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: totally different up there, like the cabin in the middle
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: of nowhere and the wall of little tiny antler hers
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: and the wood burning stove. That is uh, that is
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: super cool. So how far is ken Roban from where
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: you live? How many hours north of that? Three and
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: a half hours north? Okay, so not that's not too
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: it's not too terrible. If you if you tag out
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: early and you want to just go for a day
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: trip and check it out, we should do it. Yeah,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: I know. No, let me ask you this. I love food,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: and so Iowa is known for the big fat pork
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: tenderloins right like that. They're as big as your play
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: and they give you like a little bun basically, and
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: you know what, you know what I'm talking about. I
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: don't know. If I do, Oh, buddy, then you haven't
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: really hunted Iowa, I guess not if you haven't taken
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: advantage of the of the pork. The Iowa pork tender Yeah,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: I've always done like fish fries and stuff. Is like
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: the special meal I get out there. Yeah, the I
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: can remember that we went. What was that, like the
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: all you could eat catfish dinner that one night we're there.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: But I'm talking. I'm talking about like Iowa is known
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: because we have a huge pork producing community. I was
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: known for these big giant pork tender loins. It's a sandwich, right,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: It's like a big breaded kind of thing, red readed
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: pork tender loin. What is Michigan known for? Oh ah,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: it's a great question. So Northern Michigan, like the up
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: has a thing that's definitely like I can point of
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: right away. It's called a pasty. You ever heard of
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: a pasty? It is like oversized kel zone kind of
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: or a empanada. So it's like a pastry that is
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: filled with meat and potatoes and rudabaga and other vegetables
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: and like a gravy and it's sealed inside this pastry. Um.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: That is like an Upper Peninsula tradition um, but Lower
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Peninsula gosh, we're kind of kind of milk toast. We're
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: just kind of you get a standard Midwest fair lots
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: of greasy fried bar food. Um Man, I'm sure someone's
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: gonna be like, how did you forget about this right?
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: Blanking on what our special food is? I don't know.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: I don't know why I'm thinking of I think of this,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: but I just imagined you and your crew up in
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: the cabin during the November gun season eating a like
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: just passing around a jar of pickled eggs. Yeah, you know,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: that's kind of think my uncle would bring up there totally.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: So yes, that kind of thing could definitely fit into
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: a Northern Michigan vibe. Um Man, I'm I just feel
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: like I'm letting you down here not being a don
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: to think of what our traditional food is. But um,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: maybe maybe it's just it's it's anything, but just the
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: quantity is lots of it. Yeah, maybe that's our tradition.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Um we will have to think about this and come
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: back and have some kind of traditional good meal at
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: some point. Someone will somebody will tell me about it
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: just from listening to this, someone like Mark Kenyon is
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: a dipshit. Our our state food is this? Yeah, please
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: please inform me as well so I never made this
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: mistake again, you're letting down there. I know it. Well,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: it's not the first time. Dan, alright, man, well is
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: there anything else on your mind about the Michigan Hunt
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: that we should cover off on, or any other questions
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: or not? Really, Um, I do want to you know,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I know you don't want to put any pressure on it,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: but I do want to stop and just take a
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: look at the back forty see what the hype is about.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Not necessarily drive through it or hunted. I just want
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: to take a look and see just like the terrain,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: right for sure, that's a great idea. And yes, it's
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: not so far away that we can't scoot over there,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: and you know, we could probably do a little drive
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: around some the edges and pull camera or something like
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: that that I want to do anyways, and give you
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: a view of it too. So what's nice about it
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: is it's in one of those other one of those
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: rare places that has a little bit of a hill
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: to it, so you can get a nice little vantage
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: and see across parts from a few locations, which which
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: can't do in most areas. So I'm excited for you
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: to see it. I'm excited. I'm just excited to kind
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: of show my little neck of the woods to you.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Since I've got to spend so much time over by
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: your stuff. Um, it's gonna be fun to get to
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: return the favor. Yeah, absolutely, man, I'm jacked and uh
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: I think you know what, what would happen? What would happen,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: actually happen if I shoot a frank right out of
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: the gate first time ever day one an all. Obviously
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: it's the os are against that. But would would people
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: hate me more than they already do? Oh, without a doubt,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: you would be loathed. But that makes it dance gonna
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: be like, I don't know what you guys are talking about.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: This piece of cake. This is easy. There's booers around
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: every tree, every tree, and then I never could give
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: you sh about Iowa. And after that, Yeah, I I
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: hope for you to have the best luck possible, but
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: that would make my life more difficult if that happened.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: To defend myself, but not too much luck, right, It's like,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: but please not too much. Do me a favor and
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: only shoot like one. You know what would be amazing
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: is if you shoot a nice buck and I'm gonna
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: be taking a stab at my best buck on that
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: first night or two as well. So I'm gonna try
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: to kill Tran the first night or two. So you
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: shoot a buck and I kill Tran within the same
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: day or two, and we will have the most epic,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: celebratory podcasts of Wired Haunt all time. Would this be
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: the podcast where we both get drunk on air? Yes,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: within within safe limits, we will definitely do that. And yeah,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: we would have open can policy for the podcast. Oh nice,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: what's the what's the beer? A choice in Michigan? You
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: should know this, hopefully. Man, It's so diverse, but happy
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: be a Michigan brew brewery. Uh so, Founders is a
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: great Michigan brewery. Um so I'm going for like all day.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: I p A would be a very good choice. Or
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: another favorite of mine is the Dirty Blonde by at
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Water Brewing, which is out Detroit. Founders out of Grand
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Rapids where I grew up. So either one of those
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: would be really good choices. That just tells you how
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: different we actually are in almost every aspect of life,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: you know, Like here you are, you know, it's like, hey,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: tell me about a Michigan beer and you're like, well, yeah,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: we got all these uh these craft beers. It's so
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: delicious and ship just like, Man, I'm gonna bring a
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: thirty pack more than likely of bush light because I've
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: been drinking that ship since eighth grade. Hey man, more
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: power to you. Well, I'm pumped about this. I'm very excited.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be fun to be
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: able to follow your preparations throughout the spring and summer.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: And um, I'm gonna have a hard time not wanting
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: to do drive by as these places and get your reports.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: So I'm gonna I'm gonna do my best to leave
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: you alone and not interfere with your planning. But I'm
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: also excited. Don't get me wrong. Don't get me wrong.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Mark like help and saying, oh dude, I saw a
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: great deer in this field the other day are two
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: completely different things. Like information is great, but I don't
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: want anybody to hold my hand. Okay, okay, fair enough.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Well we'll find a healthy middle point. So just tell
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: me where Andy May hunts and we'll be good. Yeah.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: I can point you to a couple of spots right now,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: He's like, he's happy. Don't talk about it. I'm gonna
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: get a phone calling about noon on Thursday. Alright, dude, Well,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: good stuff, Thanks for taking the time to catch up. Um,
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: be safe, keep the family healthy, and uh let's talk
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: again soon. Alright, guys, that is it for us today.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Thank you for listening, thanks for being part of this community,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: and thanks for being part of this larger community we
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: call humans, we call Americans or North Americans, whatever it is.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: Wherever you call home, make sure you are thinking about others,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: practicing safe social distancing, being careful not to infect other people,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: just being safe and smart. That's all we can do
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: right now. And also support your local businesses in whatever
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: way you can. You probably can't sit in a restaurant
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: or go to many stores right now, but place to
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: take out order or place an online order at a
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: local pro shop or bookstore, whatever kind of thing you
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: want to support. There's a lot of people out there
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: right now that are struggling due to a lot of
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: these current changes and channel and just so do what
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: you can give back if possible, And until next time,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: thank you and stay wired to hunt h
