- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to the Inside the Birds postgame show.
- 0:12Speaker 2: It's Jeff mo.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Sure, it's Adam Kapan a little later than expected, but man,
- 0:17that one needed a little pause, because, Adam, that was
- 0:19one of the weirdest, strangest season openers that I've covered
- 0:23in my twenty one year. As you're talking about a
- 0:25championship banner getting unfurled, the link rocking, and then you
- 0:30get a player ejected, a player hurt on the opening kickoff,
- 0:33a lightning delay, and then like ninety percent of the
- 0:37points scored in the first half and then almost nothing
- 0:40in the second half. But if there's one thing that
- 0:43really stuck out from the eagles twenty four to twenty
- 0:45win over the Cowboys in the opener is that that
- 0:48looked like almost every single Eagles regular season came from
- 0:52the last two years, had all the elements in it.
- 0:55And I think maybe in the past we could sit
- 0:57here and say, man, this thing didn't look good or
- 0:59that didn't look good, but this is how the Eagles do.
- 1:02It was almost their standard operating procedure, especially earlier in
- 1:06the year, and I think you do have to give
- 1:08credit to a Jalen Hurts figuring out ways to move
- 1:11the ball on a tough night for the offense and
- 1:14the defense coming through in the second half. Yeah.
- 1:19Speaker 2: The thing is it's one of those games where you
- 1:20look at and you go, Okay, offense got off the
- 1:22phenomenal start, got it was active. I'm slicking my notes here,
- 1:25Like the positives Hurts is running was incredible. Man, these
- 1:31juke moves, I mean, that's part of his game. And
- 1:33like when you evaluate a quarterback who's a dual threat,
- 1:35you got to you gotta give him props when he
- 1:37does something with his legs. And Hurts was fantastic. But
- 1:40the key to me is that, well Dallas didn't stop Barkley.
- 1:43They controlled them and they and Eagles still won the game.
- 1:46Like you have to feel good about that.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Now, the passive game it Hurts was efficient, but man,
- 1:53it the second half was really Both quarterbacks struggled to
- 1:57find open receivers. Now, I know in the press box
- 2:00where you were sitting, I'm assuming you could see it
- 2:03because you know the the I call the Ultimate twenty
- 2:05twenty two is in the press box because you see
- 2:07the entire field. Yeah, guy's just not getting open, was it?
- 2:11The I know the offensive line had some pressures they
- 2:13gave up. What was the issue you thought with the
- 2:15passing game? Is just an overall take?
- 2:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I honestly thought it was a lot
- 2:19like last year's pass offense. I think that there were
- 2:22times where their guys were open. You know, I'll give
- 2:25you a perfect example, the eight yard touchdown run that
- 2:28Jalen Hurts had. I mean, there was a well designed
- 2:32rub route on the left side where two guys ran vertical.
- 2:34AJ Brown cuts in and if that ball is thrown
- 2:37when it's supposed to be with the timing that it's
- 2:40supposed to be at, AJ Brown might score a touchdown
- 2:43at very least. You know, there's a collision at the
- 2:46goal line, and he's strong. We know he can make
- 2:48yards after. But Hurts doesn't throw that ball a lot
- 2:52of times we've gone to that last year. But he
- 2:55had such a wide open because the Cowboys were in
- 2:57man defense, that the entire right side of the field
- 3:00was there for the taking. So we just ran it
- 3:02in for an eight hour touchdown. That's really the game,
- 3:06you know. I'll wait for the all twenty two to
- 3:08be out. It'll be not too too far. I was
- 3:11be able to see that there were there was pretty
- 3:13good coverage. I have to give Dallas credit. I thought
- 3:16they played pretty good defense for having a bunch of
- 3:19guys on the back end there that didn't didn't take
- 3:21a lot of reps at camp, you know, the the
- 3:23digs and Bland and all that. I know they had
- 3:26some injuries, but it was really to me, just like
- 3:30a lot of games you saw last year, especially early on,
- 3:33where if the if the defense presented Jalen Hurts with
- 3:37the opportunity and we'll get into this later to find
- 3:41a rush lane, he will take it. And I'm pretty
- 3:44sure the Cowboys are gonna watch the tape of the
- 3:46first half and they're gonna I think this is where
- 3:49they missed. Micah and even DeMarcus Lawrence, right, two veterans
- 3:53who know that when you rush Hurts, you can't get
- 3:57all the way up the field. We talked about that
- 3:59in the pregame show and when they watched the tape
- 4:01of the first half, because they completely changed how they
- 4:03rushed him in the second half and it worked for them,
- 4:06but they allowed him to have too much space to
- 4:09run through and he's going to take that and he did.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the big thing and this is what we
- 4:16call backbreaking runs. The guys who could the qbs who
- 4:19could run. It's just demoralizing for the defense. Chris collins
- 4:22Worth talking about that, it's so demoralizing because you think
- 4:24you're playing it right, you're getting up field, but no
- 4:27that you don't want to get upfield. You want to
- 4:30you want to make the quarterback run inside, right or
- 4:36totally inside. So that was backbreaking. And Hurts look explosive. Man,
- 4:40there's no quoite and he's obviously he looked healthy. But yeah,
- 4:43to pass the game. Yeah, it's remnant, very reminiscent of
- 4:47some games last year where you go, man, what uneven?
- 4:49You see some really good stuff early. I really like
- 4:51God are getting involved early. I thought that was really good.
- 4:54They continue to develop their chemistry and trusting with each other.
- 4:57That's really big for Hurts. It's part of God or
- 5:00numbers not being what they should be. Other than being
- 5:02hurt there, it was the chemistry over time where it
- 5:05hasn't been consistent enough. But that's that's a that's one
- 5:08of the positives. But before we move on to the defense,
- 5:11in Jalen Carter situation, boy, that that throw that Hurts
- 5:15had to Dotson was big time. The protection was phenomena
- 5:17as a post route. It looked like they finally got
- 5:20after kyer Elam. I mean, I was like, when are
- 5:22they going to do this? But it wasn't a J. Brown.
- 5:24It was to Dotson. Great throw over fifty yards and
- 5:28great just a great catch, great timing. That was it. Look,
- 5:31that was good to see it because they need to
- 5:32bring that deep passing game back.
- 5:34Speaker 1: That's why I called it such a vintage kind of
- 5:36Philadelphia Eagles game. I wrote about it on Phillyvoice dot com.
- 5:39This was a game that we have seen time and
- 5:42time again over the last few years, where you are
- 5:46at the end of the game seemed to be focusing
- 5:48on the fact that AJ Brown only had one target,
- 5:50was invisible to Fante Smith. Just a couple of catches.
- 5:54Maybe not poetry emotion, but you got some great and
- 5:57timely scrambles and you had a beautiful deep ball, which
- 6:01this time he went to Dots And it's usually Smith
- 6:04or Brown, but this one went to Dotson and it
- 6:06was absolutely beautiful. And by the way, not a lot
- 6:08of quarterbacks are willing to make that kind of a
- 6:12throw on third and six. That's really important to keep
- 6:14in mind third and six. Your mentality, especially in a
- 6:17close game, is I want to move the sticks. I
- 6:19want to find, you know, my receiver if I can
- 6:22avoid the pass rush. But I also want to throw
- 6:24a high percentage pass. I don't want to turn the
- 6:26ball over. Those are low percentage passes that for Jalen
- 6:29Hurts are actually high percentage because he's such a good
- 6:34deep ball thrower and he places the ball really well.
- 6:37And I actually talked to Johan Dottson after the game.
- 6:41I asked him, was it tough to track that ball
- 6:44so deep down the field because he doesn't get that
- 6:46opportunity as much as aj and DeVante, And he said,
- 6:49it's actually really easy. He just puts it in a
- 6:52place where it's easy to get and he had to
- 6:54run under it. But that's that's a vintage Eagles offensive game.
- 6:57I mean, you're you're going to wonder why certain things
- 6:59didn't happen, but at the end of the game, certain
- 7:02things did happen to make sure to ensure that they
- 7:04won the game.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yeah, a couple of things on that, So yeah, Hurts
- 7:08again nineteen for twenty three. Well, when we talked to
- 7:11Greg co Selfer inside the tape that I know we
- 7:13will drop that we Tuesday morning. I think, Yeah, Greg's
- 7:17going to tell you what the tape told him. You know,
- 7:18he was not an opinion. This is what the tape
- 7:20looked like. Here's this is what it where it should
- 7:23have gone, or here's where it went. This is the
- 7:25right thing. Whether it's not, whether it was, we'll know,
- 7:28we'll be able to tell you. But that throw is
- 7:31picked up. Yeah, I know it's a lower percentage throw.
- 7:33But Hurts is so elite at it. You know, Greg,
- 7:35Greg was nice enough to give our Patreon Tier three
- 7:37members access to his notes. He broke down Hurts from
- 7:41a couple areas last year, and Greg's just blown away
- 7:44about how great of a deep passer. Because I asked Greg,
- 7:47I said, do you remember him being this good with
- 7:48this in Oklahoma and Alabama? Didn't seem like he felt
- 7:52it was the same, like it was anything like this
- 7:54that's pretty good, Like this is where this is a
- 7:57way where you could just demoralized teams, not your with
- 8:00his running if he gets protection. He loves throwing the
- 8:04ball deep some court like dark Carr, who had had
- 8:07Norris talent, he would check the ball down like his
- 8:11nickname was Captain check down. He would he would frustrate
- 8:13coaches like, dude, it's you can do this right, car
- 8:16wouldn't do it. Hurts does it. It's it's amazing. But
- 8:18the passing game overall has got to be better. There's
- 8:21no ques just overall.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely absolutely. We said that so many times last
- 8:26year and then we couldn't. You can't figure out when
- 8:28that game is going to be. That it was against
- 8:31the Steelers. There are a couple other games where all
- 8:33of a sudden, out of nowhere, it's just like bang
- 8:36bang bang bang. You know, Greg, Greg told us he
- 8:41did a study. You know, this is really I think
- 8:44a discussion we had on the preseason inside the tape
- 8:47on on third down quarterbacks on third down, and jail
- 8:50And by far had the fewest passing attempts on third
- 8:55down compared to other NFL quarterbacks, but he had a
- 9:00high the team had a high rate of conversion because
- 9:03and this is why I think people struggle with evaluating
- 9:06in the ranking of Hurts, because he'll have these drives
- 9:09where he doesn't have he doesn't throw the ball and
- 9:12third that he runs to pick up the first down,
- 9:13then runs to pick up the first down and then
- 9:16later in the drive after doing that, he'll pop one
- 9:19deep and so his numbers will be really efficient. You know,
- 9:22his completion percentage will be high. He'll have you know,
- 9:25a good QBR because he popped that deep ball. But
- 9:29he didn't have to throw the ball as much as
- 9:31some of the other guys. And that's why people struggle
- 9:32with the rating. But again, at the end of the day,
- 9:35did you put score points or not in that regard?
- 9:37They did, But I agree with you. I'm sure they'll
- 9:39spend the week trying to figure out how to just
- 9:42try to get better, just try to make the players
- 9:44that are there when they are.
- 9:45Speaker 2: And understand it hurts. Had fourteen attempts, right, there are
- 9:48a number of them that were scrambles where for whatever reason,
- 9:51he didn't like what he saw, he didn't get protection,
- 9:53guys didn't get open or what. There's always there's always
- 9:57context everything, Yes, just what the tables will tell us.
- 10:00But I gotta give Dallas credit. I mean, they didn't
- 10:03stop Barkley, but they controlled them. I mean they did
- 10:04a really good job. Look, he got a number of
- 10:07in fact, some runs he got on his own where
- 10:08one block real well yep, so I but he only
- 10:12had sixty yards. I mean that they did a really
- 10:14good Joe that that was a stunner to me. Man
- 10:16Kenny Clark, I'm sure helped aj Dillon his first run
- 10:20with what did he rubble and stubble and he got
- 10:23nine yards? It was good.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean at the end of the day, what
- 10:25do you have? He also had twenty four receiving yards,
- 10:28so we had eighty four yards. But it took him
- 10:31twenty two touches. So there's your answer on whether or
- 10:34not Barkley's load is going to get any lighter. Twenty
- 10:37two touches. Project that over seventeen games, that's going to
- 10:39be close to three eighty four hundred touches, you know,
- 10:42and all of a sudden done because they needed to
- 10:45they needed to give the ball to Barkley in tight games.
- 10:47But yeah, his average per touch is pretty low for
- 10:52for what he ordinarily is the only last thing.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Go ahead, I'm just gonna ad on Barkley, but I'll
- 10:59tell you will ship. We've talked two years now about
- 11:01the explosion, the juice that he has, and we've we've
- 11:03used the word juice having seventy five times with will Shipley.
- 11:07That catch that he had and the and the run
- 11:10unfortunately hurt his ribs and that definitely impacted the offense.
- 11:12We we need to add that because he was he looked
- 11:14really good. Yeah, he looked good, like he adds something
- 11:17And obviously Dylan's not explosive at all, so that's something
- 11:20they're missing without Shipley, and he'd never returned after he
- 11:23got hurt early in the game. That's a disappointment. Dickerson
- 11:26left with the with you saw Dickerson leave with the back.
- 11:31That's the back injury which got added this week. That's concerning.
- 11:33And man, poor Ben Vansumer and it feel bad for
- 11:36him testing today on his knee. It's it looked terrible,
- 11:40looked bad. I you saw his face when NBC showed it.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, feel bad for him. We'll see on
- 11:49Shipley and of course at the end of the game
- 11:52or near the end of the game, Landon Dickerson. Yeah,
- 11:54we talked about this limping off going back into the
- 11:58locker room. So you just got to hope that Landon
- 12:02Diggerson can make it this year and hold up because
- 12:05he's really putting his body through the grinder over the
- 12:08last few months.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and by the way, we should mention Drew Kennell
- 12:11was not active. It's not active. Toth replaced Dickerson if
- 12:15he heard his back. The inactors were Ojelari and O'Conor,
- 12:20so basically they went with three edges and then Campbell.
- 12:24If you noticed, they did line him up as an
- 12:26edge rusher. I don't know how many snaps he did there,
- 12:28but I thought that was interesting. Ty Robinson us expected
- 12:32we talked about it in the pregame. We didn't expect
- 12:34him to be a factor for a while. He was an
- 12:35active in Kenyon Green and of course McKee with his
- 12:38broken finger.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, hey, last thing on offense I wanted to mention.
- 12:43I thought Patullo did a really nice job with the
- 12:46first fifteen. He came out with a variety of of
- 12:52He really took the torch from Kellen. It was it
- 12:54was a lot. You saw eleven personnel, you saw twelve personnel,
- 12:58you saw a thirteen person no play where he lined
- 13:01up three tight ends on the right side of the
- 13:04line of scrimmage, but then he tossed the ball left.
- 13:07He I mean the play called for Hurts to toss
- 13:10the ball to the left side to Sequon Barkley, who
- 13:13got sixteen yards. So that was kind of a misdirection
- 13:17pitch out of thirteen personnel and they got sixteen yards
- 13:21out of it. And there was a ton of motion.
- 13:23I mean there was motion, good, good early on on
- 13:26almost every single play. I mean DeVante Smith running right
- 13:29to left, aj Brown left to right. I think there
- 13:32was motion on the big play to dots, and I
- 13:36gotta say I felt like it was motion for the
- 13:38sake of it. Wasn't motion like Shanahan style to create space.
- 13:42I mean, yeah, guys get free releases. I don't know
- 13:45if it really did anything for the offense, but there
- 13:47was a ton of motion, So we'll have to see
- 13:50if there's more of that going forward.
- 13:52Speaker 2: A couple things. Did you notice Cooper Degen was on
- 13:54offense for three snaps? I did not what Yeah, yeah,
- 13:58I'm looking at the Yeah, three snaps. Darris Cooper got
- 14:02to Metchi. I saw that one Shipley only played five
- 14:05snaps because he got hurt. Dylan had eight grantson. See, Okay,
- 14:09here's the thing. They need a backup. Why tight end
- 14:12in the worst way did they just do? I mean
- 14:16Calcata is just not he played a lot. By the way,
- 14:18he played fifty snaps. They had sixty three snaps on
- 14:22offense totally as an offense. Yep, that's they need it.
- 14:26They need to hurry up back badly and Shipley. You
- 14:28saw Dylan play late in the game, you know, a
- 14:30little bit a couple of snaps. But yeah, Grantson played
- 14:33twenty seven percent of snaps, way more than I expected.
- 14:36That was interesting.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yeah, is it is? It was Cooper to team maybe
- 14:39in they'll fight in the the kneel down snaps is
- 14:41like a deep maybe.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe that was it. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 14:44I don't know. I just thought i'd i'd let people
- 14:46know since we have access to the snap counts this early.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I think Grandson kind of played an h back
- 14:51role after with Van Sumer and out. Yeah, you know,
- 14:54I noticed him sort of offset a lot and in
- 14:57the backfield I think when he was in the game.
- 14:59So the the scheme round. If Van Schumern's I feel bad.
- 15:03I think they were gonna use that kid, Adam. I
- 15:05think they were really hiding him in the preseason offensively
- 15:07because they had some plans for him and now those
- 15:10might go to waste. So we'll see yep, all right,
- 15:14we'll get to the defense in a second. The NFL
- 15:17is already underway, and you know what that means. That
- 15:19means there's gonna be that one guy in your group
- 15:22chat who hits this five leg parlay in the first
- 15:25week in the season and then he's not gonna shut
- 15:27up about it for the rest of the year.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I wouldn't either.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I wouldn't I want to be that person. That person
- 15:33could be any one of us. And my Bookie makes
- 15:36it stupid easy to get in on all of the action,
- 15:40whether it's college ball, NFL super contests, survivor pools. You
- 15:45need all the spreads, the player pops and in game lines.
- 15:48It's all under one roof, and it's all with my Bookie.
- 15:52If you're new to my Bookie, we got something for you.
- 15:55Use our code the Birds, all one word, and any

- 16:07in using your bet back bonus token. All right, who
- 16:10says you lose everything when you lose not a year
- 16:13with my Bookie, So there's no better time to jump
- 16:16in and there's no better place to play football is back.
- 16:19Let's make some money, my bookie.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Sky Motor Cars and West Gusts, there's a different building.
- 16:24Dealers all the texsas one look with their highline pre
- 16:27owned vehicles.
- 16:28Speaker 2: And people all over the country.
- 16:29Speaker 3: What the honor Bredge Goler. Make sure you don't spend
- 16:32the time with your money before you purchase the car.
- 16:34Sky Motor Cars allows you to make all the decisions
- 16:38regarding your next vehicle. At sky Motor Cars, you never
- 16:41have to spend more than necessary. There's a Skymotorcars dot
- 16:44com today are called sixteen nine to one, eight seven fives.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Well, somebody who'll be losing some money most likely, because
- 16:56that's what happens when you get kicked out of a game.
- 16:58You get fined, maybe even suspended, is Jalen Carter. And listen,
- 17:03there's gonna be a whole lot of controversy to It's
- 17:05like Seinfeld now with the second Spinner things.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Dak spit first, Yeah, right, that's awesome, Right.
- 17:11Speaker 1: He spit. He actually admitted he spit, but he Dak
- 17:15was saying, I spit a lot, like you know, you're
- 17:17like you're like you spit. He wasn't. Dak was basically saying,
- 17:20I didn't spit at the guy. This guy spit on me.
- 17:24And so it's you know, for a guy who I
- 17:26thought Adam showed leadership this summer, Jalen Carter, that's a
- 17:31that's a major step back. You cannot do that.
- 17:34Speaker 2: You can't do it, even if even if he was
- 17:36provoked by the spinning spinning at each other. This the spinners.
- 17:42So you can't, man, you just can't react. You gotta
- 17:45walk away. In fact, what you do is and I
- 17:47love when you might see in the NBA or in
- 17:50NFL sometimes when there's a click when someone pushes somebody. First,
- 17:54Carter should have pointed him, hey, I didn't do it, like,
- 17:57don't spit. Hey he just spit at me, right, just
- 18:00that like see Scott learned, Man, you can that can't happen.
- 18:02Think about it this way. Carteront wants up not playing
- 18:05a snap. Somehow they won. I know the run defense
- 18:08was which was shaky, but there were sanders the standers
- 18:11play obviously. Yeah, Javonte Williams had some good runs of
- 18:14that game, but they weren't like he won long His
- 18:18long was eleven. It wasn't like he had a bunch
- 18:20of ten yard plus runs. They hung in there, and
- 18:24remember now they only they only dressed four D tackles
- 18:28and if you consider the snapage was crazy, Jomo was
- 18:32totally invisible by the way. Jordan Davis played way more
- 18:36because he had to eighty seven percent of snaps fifty
- 18:39three overall, they had sixty one defensive snaps. Their defense
- 18:42did and Byron Young had some plays in this game.
- 18:45He had he had twenty two snaps thirty six percent
- 18:47of the snap So that's that's really all they can do.
- 18:50And you know, not having BG played inside a nickel
- 18:53because he retired, they were kind of limited to what
- 18:56they can do with with their front.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I got That's why I sort of credit the
- 19:00defense because they were clearly in a position with Davis
- 19:04and Najomo playing eighty seven percent ninety percent of the
- 19:07snaps respectively, that you figured that they were gonna wear down.
- 19:11And if you notice, Dallas came out at him in
- 19:13the second half, they ran the ball three straight times,
- 19:17then they got a deep pass and then they ran it.
- 19:19They were running it again until Miles Sanders fumbled, So
- 19:22it looked like Dallas was trying to capitalize on No,
- 19:25Jordan Davis, there's no rotation up front. And by the way,
- 19:28we'll talk about this too, not much of a rotation
- 19:30on the edges either. We'll get into that in a second.
- 19:34And Dallas was running the ball and then bam. Like
- 19:37I said, it's such a vintage Eagles game. What happens
- 19:40a turnover. That's how the Eagles lived last year. They
- 19:43bent occasionally, but then came up with a big turnover.
- 19:47And your guy, the guy you just mentioned Young got
- 19:49in there. I know, Johad Campbell. If you watch the TV,
- 19:52looks like Jehad Campbell's hitting him causing the fumble. But
- 19:55if you really freeze it, you'll see this arm right
- 19:58and then and a four on the back because it's
- 20:00ninety four. It's it's Young really making that initial hit
- 20:03and jarring the ball out, and then of course Quinna
- 20:05Mitchell jumps on it, and then the Eagles retain possession.
- 20:09And then the lightning came, which I do think helped
- 20:11the Eagles a little bit get rest. No not, I
- 20:15think it helped the defense. But you're right, it was
- 20:17so bizarre because I joked that they should recreate their
- 20:21their takeaway celebration that they did right right before the snap,
- 20:25just to get themselves fired up again. But that's that
- 20:28was the Eagles defense. I got to give them credit.
- 20:30They were wearing down and they came up with a
- 20:32really big stop when they needed it. Because I think
- 20:35if if if Sanders doesn't fumble there and Dallas, I
- 20:39believe would have gone ahead at that and if they
- 20:42score a touchdown, that might be a completely different game.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Well they might have lost if Zach Bond not hustled
- 20:48downfield on that tackle, that's probably gonna be a touchdown.
- 20:52So yep, that was a big time playing, no doubt.
- 20:55And you make a really good point about that the
- 20:57the one thing that helped the defense get some wrest
- 20:59There's no doubt. Abou's a really good point. I didn't
- 21:01have thought about that. That's that's that's I agree with that.
- 21:04A couple couples. Actually one big surprise Drew mcuba. You know,
- 21:08it's it's interesting because you never really know how Vic feels.
- 21:11Because Vic, you saw with the gene he felt Degen
- 21:14missed too much practice time. He didn't start him at
- 21:16the beginning of the season. But Cuba misspracticed time with
- 21:19two different injuries. Apparently we look. My thing was like
- 21:24he either starts with three, four or five. Drew mccuba, Nope,
- 21:28it was weak one and it wasn't even remotely close.
- 21:31Mcuba eighty four percent of snaps, fifty one snaps and
- 21:35Sidney Brown it's over for Citdny's would be a back
- 21:38up the rest of the season unless mccuba start gets hurt.
- 21:41Brown only had fourteen snaps twenty three percent. That that
- 21:43is remarkable to me, that it just with Obviously he's
- 21:49really smart. He picked it up and Vic thought mentally
- 21:52he was ready to go, and that that that's what
- 21:54it tells us that we always say decisions to make
- 21:56tell you everything you need to know. They felt mccuba,
- 21:59particularly Vic and Christian Parker defensive backs coach, thought that
- 22:02he was ready to go. Good stuff there.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Listen, we continue to learn this about Vic. He is
- 22:07going to play the guys he feels is best for
- 22:09his defense, and he's not going to care about a
- 22:12experience as long as you show that you know what
- 22:15to do and be your contract. Because I would have
- 22:19never guessed Asizo Julari would have been inactive going into
- 22:23the season opener but Adam, it's pretty clear this guy
- 22:25does not. We were so used to Jim Schwartz and
- 22:28wanting a big, deep rotation of edges. He does not
- 22:31feel like he needs a deep rotation of edge rushers.
- 22:35He really only had, if you want to call it
- 22:37four because of Patrick Johnson, who played a little bit,
- 22:39but he really gave the majority of the edge rushing
- 22:43snaps to the two starters. And Josh Ruche right, and
- 22:46I know you're right that they brought Campbell down. I
- 22:48think that was more schematic at times, because the Cowboys
- 22:51are running and you're bringing that fifth man. You're in
- 22:53nickel because the Cowboys have three receivers out there, but
- 22:57you suspect they might run, so you bring either ball know,
- 23:00you bring Campbell down on the line of scrimmage, just
- 23:02for that extra beef up front. But you know, I
- 23:07was shocked at the Jeli was was, uh.
- 23:10Speaker 2: That was surprising me. Yeah, But it's if Vic's not
- 23:13going to play him, I mean, I know, it's how
- 23:16he's called, how he could how he controls I mean
- 23:18every general manager, because they have the personnel meeting. If
- 23:22he wants the guy to play, he could overroll. You
- 23:24should not Overrull. I don't know how. He's pretty good
- 23:26from what I understand talking to coaches going back right,
- 23:29you know the number of years like he's they'll have
- 23:31a discussion, but he doesn't like to do that, and
- 23:34you really shouldn't if the if the coach thinks the
- 23:36guy's not it just didn't do it. You shouldn't te
- 23:38him what to do. But anyway, it's very clear to
- 23:41me that Vic didn't think that Ojellar could help him
- 23:43and he Honestly, I didn't really see it in terms
- 23:47of looking good in tran camp other than the second
- 23:50preseason game. We were like, okay, seemed to have something left.
- 23:53But Vic felt he can he cannot help him. On
- 23:55the snap counts, just real quick here at sixty one
- 23:58overall the Eagles defense on the field, Bond, Black and
- 24:02Hip Mitchell played every snap. Campbell uh ninety two percent
- 24:06of snap so Joemun ninety percent of snaps. I mean
- 24:08it's only game one, don't panic, folks. Yeah, he'll be
- 24:11a factor later. Davis held up. I know they gave
- 24:14up some runs. Eighty seven percent of snaps, Nolan Smith
- 24:16eighty five percent, mccoube eighty four Jackson will get to him.
- 24:19Who u dor E sixty nine percent, Jax Hunt sixty
- 24:23four percent, Young's thirty six, Usha thirty one, Sidney Brown
- 24:28only twenty three, ch Green, Vennett eleven, Patrick Johnson you mentioned,
- 24:32but yeah, he played a little bit more expectum defense.
- 24:35Obviously we know he's here for special teams. Mostly gave
- 24:37Hal only five snaps eight percent.
- 24:40Speaker 1: That surprised me. By the way, if you after JILLN.
- 24:42Carter got ejected, I've thought, okay, you're gonna see probably
- 24:46a decent amount of Hall and Young. You did see
- 24:48the Byron Young. I thought you'd see more gable Hall too,
- 24:51But again they just relied so heavily on Ojomo and
- 24:55Jordan Davis, who who tip generally played well. I mean
- 24:58that's a good Dallas interior offensive line too that they've got.
- 25:01They generally played well. You saw that one really nice
- 25:04pass rush from Jordan Davis, but he couldn't finish off
- 25:07the sack.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Yep, yep. Actually he had two pressures. He had two
- 25:11pressures both you it's a shame we should mention just
- 25:15a couple of things defensively. In terms of Dejane, did
- 25:20you notice how he was deployed any kind of from
- 25:24the press box because they opened.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Up outside corner. Yeah, I mean the whole secondary is interesting, right.
- 25:33I mean, first of all, I didn't think we were
- 25:35going to see it this early because if Dallas has
- 25:38two good receivers, but VIC clearly had Quina On Mitchell
- 25:41shadowing George Pickett traveling against Pickens. Now, I know some people,
- 25:45why wouldn't you do it against Cede Lamb? Well it's
- 25:47caause see Lamb plays inside a lot and outside, and
- 25:50it's tough to have your top corner play slot and outside.
- 25:54So they stuck him on. George Pickens figured that with
- 25:58Ceedee Lamb being inside, he'd be matched up against the
- 26:00gene a lot and then you take your chances with
- 26:03that outside matchup. But in the opportunities that Lamb did
- 26:07get against A Dori Jackson and JA Corean Bennett, he
- 26:10won basically all of them. So it's sort of like
- 26:12a pick your poison for VIC, right if he If
- 26:16let's say VIC didn't Let's say VIC just played sides
- 26:19all right, Quinnon stays on one side and a Dory
- 26:23on the other. Well, what happens if Schottenheimer puts Lamb
- 26:28in the slot on on Dori Jackson's slot side and
- 26:31then pickens outside and then waste like Jalen Tolbert on
- 26:36Quinon Mitchell. Well, then you're not getting the most out
- 26:38of Quinyon and you've got a bad matchup on the
- 26:40other side of the field. So I understand why Vic
- 26:42did it, but it did expose a dory to have
- 26:46to cover CD lamb loot and that park didn't go well.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I wanted to get to the man the
- 26:51travel that that's something new, and then they for the
- 26:56ringo truth or she didn't play on defense. The coaches
- 26:58kind of tell you where he's at. That he's a
- 27:00fourth corner is what we said two years ago. That's
- 27:03proven out. He's a really good special teams player. I
- 27:06do wonder it's so you know, obviously if this is
- 27:10going on, if this can if they continued, Jackson gave
- 27:13up a number of plays. I saw he gave himself
- 27:16a see 'still somewhere he was quote to give himself
- 27:18a c. Bottom line is it's got to be better
- 27:22at that corner spot opposite Mitchell. We know they were
- 27:25going to go after him. That was obvious. That was
- 27:27the big thing. We talked about, but what he leading
- 27:30up to the game, but what he would hold up
- 27:32and Bennett replaced him. Bennett had a holding penalty. I
- 27:34joked on discord he could have had three penalties on that.
- 27:38He was grabby Ja Koreyan. You only played seventh snaps
- 27:41on defense. But at some point, you know, it's like,
- 27:45you know the trade deadlines in late October. You don't
- 27:47need to wait till then. It's like, how long is
- 27:49how we got to wait if this continues to go
- 27:51get another corner for the trade market.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think a couple of years ago he got
- 27:54bired about a week or two before the trade deadline.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Right there, you go, yeah, but you get you want
- 28:00to give I know it hasn't been good for Bennett.
- 28:02This is completely different defense than he played in with
- 28:04the Raiders. But the guy's talented. You got to give
- 28:07him time to can't panic. You gotta let this situate
- 28:10play it that. By the way, they did win, but
- 28:12next week they're at the Chiefs and the Chiefs are
- 28:15throwing them to fact, the word coming from Kansas City
- 28:18is that because their past the game was not great.
- 28:20Last season, the chechen wasn't great, they're gonna they want
- 28:24to expand it. They want to they want to move
- 28:26the ball down field more so, it's it's gona be
- 28:30and they've reached they've reshaped their offensive line. We'll talk
- 28:32more about that next week. But hey, you know what,
- 28:36they only gave up twenty points. But man, it's only
- 28:39game one. A lot of corrections. As Nick, we'll talk
- 28:41about coaches always talk about that, Hey, you got you
- 28:43need a tape. You got tape, and you got to
- 28:45be a little bit better there.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And you know, with Hod Campbell starting at
- 28:49the second level, I think the tape will get it
- 28:51to it. With Greg, it's gonna probably show that his
- 28:54athleticism is unbelievable. He made that huge pass break up
- 28:58on the backup tight end on that play down the
- 29:01scene where he I can't remember that Brevian Jordan's span
- 29:05or something like that.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, yes, yeah span.
- 29:09Speaker 1: He made a really nice breakup on that. But then
- 29:12there were some plays, just some run players, where I
- 29:15felt like he was getting blocked out pretty good. He's
- 29:17got to learn to get around the offensive tackle or
- 29:20to be more aggressive in that pulling guard and kind
- 29:23of get either get crashed into him. So that Bond
- 29:26can make the tackle or get off stack and shed,
- 29:29you know, make the tackle yourself. Yeah, he's got to
- 29:31probably improve in that area, but the range and the
- 29:35athletic ability is just there.
- 29:37Speaker 2: And I could see shout out to specialism shake Ellie
- 29:40nailed that fifty eight yarder. Was phenomenal. He he look,
- 29:45he went through the struggles for whatever four weeks or
- 29:47so last year. By the way, you don't have to
- 29:50be on the entryport to be dealing with something, you know, whatever.
- 29:53It could be anything. He didn't miss any practice time.
- 29:55But the bottom line is that he nailed that fifty
- 29:57eight yarder and shout out to Braidon man, Holy smoke.
- 30:01He had a great summer. By the way. He is
- 30:03really good. He's taking his game to another level. Forty
- 30:06eight seven average. Two punts of fifty plus yards fifty
- 30:09one fifty one.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Fourth quarters were fantastic, phenomen.
- 30:14Speaker 2: It's funny you mentioned that because I'm like, you know,
- 30:17it's such a judgment call. This is where New York
- 30:20should the officiating office should be. Like the ref is
- 30:24walking back the yardage like he's like, okay, he sees
- 30:26it go out out of bounds. He's got to walk
- 30:28it up. I don't know if that was completely accurate
- 30:30where he placed it, but nevertheless, two punts inside the
- 30:33twenty at the eleven and the eighteen that I've always
- 30:35talking about eleven where he was placed at the eleven.
- 30:37But braid, man, we don't talk about him enough. He
- 30:40was good, not great since they've got him through last season,
- 30:46but man, this summer, holy smokes, and it manifested itself.
- 30:51Was this the preseason? It was in training camp. Not
- 30:54that we're watching punters a lot, but when I watch
- 30:55Him'm like, wow, this is really booming. The hangtime's great.
- 30:58He was incredible, and Jake's he looks great.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Yeah. No, special teams was huge in this game, very
- 31:04big with the directional punting and the field goals. I agree.
- 31:07All right, So that's you know, basically the rundown. The
- 31:10Eagles win a game. It's it was a typical NFC
- 31:13East type game. I think the Cowboys maybe they're a
- 31:16little better than people gave him credit for, or they
- 31:18just caught the Eagles at the right time, but you know,
- 31:21they didn't move the ball at times. But hey, that
- 31:23second half. Got to give the Eagles a lot of
- 31:25credit for both team. Both teams really kind of turned
- 31:28around defensively the second half. We'll see what that means
- 31:31for the rest of the season. That's gonna do it
- 31:34for the Inside the Birds postgame show for Adam Kaplan.
- 31:37I'm Jeff Mosher. Catcha on the next one.
