[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so this was like two weeks ago, but since I haven't been on, you know, I wanted to get your guys' thoughts on this because this was like a really interesting

[SPEAKER_00]: I had this, this just goes back to the national, like the beginning of this kind of trade into this situation.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I had a Corbin Carroll, a true blue auto, PSA Titan.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I think bio means like holding on a Corbin Carroll is always a great thing there.

[SPEAKER_00]: But I wanted some cash.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I was walking around and it was towards the end of the show.

[SPEAKER_00]: And nobody was really quite willing to meet the asking price cash-wise.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I finally saw somebody that was like, I can get you halfway there, cash-wise and then pick anything from this display case and I'll trade you the difference.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm looking around, I'm like, okay, well, who do I like here?

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to try to force it too too much.

[SPEAKER_00]: But today, we have prospects I was trying to get cards of was Colt Emerson.

[SPEAKER_00]: I usually just go for the Bowman first and keep it simple.

[SPEAKER_00]: But there was this 2023 Bowman draft Sapphire

[SPEAKER_00]: I think at the time there was like one comp at around like $700, I'm like I do I do really like this guy long term.

[SPEAKER_00]: I was able to get him to kind of make up the difference and the value is there.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I've been holding on to this card for a while since whenever the last national was and just been really bullish on cold Emerson of course.

[SPEAKER_00]: But this card, when I was looking at Comps to other players versions of this, whether it was Cags or McGonagore or whatever, they were all over the place.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like certain players that had no business being as expensive as they were, like $67,000, and then guys like schemes only being like 10.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so I had no idea what to think of it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Cold Emerson signs the extension.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I got, I'm just going to throw it up on eBay for like 8,000 or best offer.

[SPEAKER_00]: And imagine when we made the trade, it was at about a $7,800 value.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so, and that was after nothing.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like, nobody, a thing, whatever, all of a sudden this offer comes in.

[SPEAKER_00]: How do you value a card like that that when I've never really owned any Sapphire selection red autos, there was three watchers on the card as well on eBay.

[SPEAKER_04]: And when you're making money, the last thing that you wanna do on a card like that is try to get another $500 or $1000.

[SPEAKER_00]: My biggest sale of my career on on the cards at funny enough it overtakes the Roman Anthony true gold PSA 10 and I sold for five grand that one I made me got a little too I was a little too quick with but I made money on it right so like you just got to play the percentages there right and I think I overthought it I'm curious what Bubba thinks because like.

[SPEAKER_00]: Again, there's no cops like I'm looking at some, I can't remember exactly who the prospect was, but like a very back end of the top 15 in his own system kind of guy going for five grand two.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm like, what is this, but then you also saw some better players potentially some elite players trading at the same number two.

[SPEAKER_00]: Is it just the wild west when it comes to those types of cards?

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when you're looking at his actual orange wave, you know, it's a Bowman first orange wave auto.

[SPEAKER_04]: Well, the interesting piece about those cars, specifically the Sapphire selections is they are a low number.

[SPEAKER_04]: And they're kind of niche in the sense that, you know, some folks do like to kind of go after those as kind of their own little product line.

[SPEAKER_04]: They're not a primary first product.

[SPEAKER_04]: And this is, honestly, this is the sad part of the hobby.

[SPEAKER_04]: There's somebody who might think that they're buying like a red first, yeah, at 5,500 or whatever, you know, and they're buying it because they're going, oh, this is a Birmingham red.

[SPEAKER_04]: I've always heard about Bowman reds.

[SPEAKER_04]: Well, that's actually not the Bowman red.

[SPEAKER_04]: That's a sapphire selections red.

[SPEAKER_04]: And so you honestly, like, you don't go back to a buyer and go, hey, are you sure?

[SPEAKER_04]: You know, so you always, always take that.

[SPEAKER_04]: Now, the counter to this is, is that, you know, and we went through the same situation, Bubba and I, and

[SPEAKER_04]: you know, and we have different experiences and certainly different kind of risk tolerances and ideas and stuff, but we had this this Connor Griffin arch true orange PSA 10 that we had Jim right and it had doubled in value right so we we paid like eight nine k four we graded it had a thousand odd grading fear whatever I think we probably were into it for like nine or ten k.

[SPEAKER_04]: And it was one of those deals where little Matt and I had the card and we were in Dallas at the Dallas car show.

[SPEAKER_04]: And that was when people were a little bit and get a Sean Conner because it was preseason he hadn't debuted yet or whatever.

[SPEAKER_04]: And people were often like 22, 21, 19, 20, whatever.

[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm sitting here going like, take,

[SPEAKER_04]: The money because we're doubling up, we're doubling up, we're doubling up.

[SPEAKER_04]: And Bubba's like, I know, no, no, we're going to hold it, we're going to hold it, and you know, finally it came to the point where we got an offer in the high 20s and Bubba's like, take it.

[SPEAKER_04]: And so in that case, you know, we did hold out a little bit and it's a true versus an insert auto.

[SPEAKER_04]: So a little bit of a different scenario there, but those kinds of decisions are like those are the kinds of decisions that can really make you

[SPEAKER_04]: because there's plenty of listeners here who I am sure held on or asked for a hundred more bucks or two hundred or five hundred or a thousand.

[SPEAKER_04]: And then, you know, that offer goes away and the card's gone.

[SPEAKER_04]: And then I'm sure there's probably some who maybe felt strong about it, felt some conviction and held on.

[SPEAKER_04]: So you can win or lose there.

[SPEAKER_04]: But, you know, Robert, you my friend can grab some of the big sales.

[SPEAKER_00]: The other the other quick thing I got for you is, you know, I've, I've held on to pretty much all of my Meconicals, you know, trim maybe one or two with the start of the season.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you remember, I was collecting as many of the refractor Autos as I could like infinity stones there, like 180 to 200 a pop at the time and just scoop them all up and I have like an eight or nine of them.

[SPEAKER_00]: To them, graded well, a couple of other's graded as a nine.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it was one or two tens, a couple of nine's, and then a couple that were said back to me, because I said, if it's an eight, like leave it with the quality control issues, I think, that there were with the mechanical cards, or at least maybe that just product in general.

[SPEAKER_00]: As you know, I am maybe one of his biggest fans, and so I'm going to keep a couple for my PC in general anyways.

[SPEAKER_00]: But how do you handle a player like this where, look, he darn well, may win Rookie of the Year.

[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of expect him to.

[SPEAKER_00]: I know Murakami's getting up there, but I think when you look at 160, the body of work, it's going to be mechanical.

[SPEAKER_00]: I obviously need to trim some of that because I need to fund my addiction to this hobby.

[SPEAKER_00]: And all the other purchases are going to go nearly as well.

[SPEAKER_00]: But what is the best time for me to do that?

[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously I don't want to do it all at once as well.

[SPEAKER_00]: What would you do if you also were as, you know, foolish on McGonagall as I am, which is like, again, I think he's going to be, you know, one of the better players at his position for a very long time.

[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to answer this one wrong because I love mechanical two and I love Connor too.

[SPEAKER_01]: So, and JJ, so it's hard to say because what they could be, you know, I mean, I think the answer probably the right answer is take your profit to some degree, feel comfortable with it and hold some that you can afford to hold.

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think that's the answer would be Mike would be my answer.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, do you sell the 9s or the 10, like you have 2 10s, 3 9s and a few Ross?

[SPEAKER_01]: I sell the tens because you've got profit in the grading in those two, but you got extra profit there.

[SPEAKER_04]: And I would sell the rolls and probably if I had some other cleaner all keep those and sell the not cleaner all, I would I would keep one ten and I would keep one nine and I would liquidate the rest because at that point in time you're net free into both and your cost basis, I would imagine on the two that you had are essentially zero, but you know

[SPEAKER_04]: And so you can ride that long-term.

[SPEAKER_04]: I do think McGonagall's going to go flat in his market through the next three to four months.

[SPEAKER_04]: And then I think you're going to see maybe a spike if he wins rookie the year, depending upon how the Tigers do in the playoffs.

[SPEAKER_04]: Like if they make it in the playoffs and McGonagall rips a double, you know, the mean and wins against seven or something like that.

[SPEAKER_04]: Like of course, you know, but it's going to take that kind of thing at this juncture.

[SPEAKER_04]: Now you're going to see a low in the offseason and then you're going to see McGonagall spike into the debut part of next year.

[SPEAKER_04]: The gold multipliers are always interesting too because it depends player to player that's right born from you guys is like not every gold trades at the same multiplier for the same player yeah and McGonagal like I said McGonagal's market's kind of weird he's got some great sales you know on certain colors and then some colors are kind of off and you know whatever but I mean I definitely if it were me and you feel comfortable where you got your gold like I wouldn't even be hesitant to sell the gold right now because it's so it's so up.

[SPEAKER_04]: And honestly, the hobby seems smarter to me than it has been in years past.

[SPEAKER_04]: Like, you have to sharpen your pencil right now and be really strategic about where you find value and stuff.

[SPEAKER_04]: One of the things I always tell little Matt and it's on repeat in my head is when you press and when you try to make stuff happen, a lot of times you can make mistakes.

[SPEAKER_04]: And so right now we're in a great season where as I told you, I'm like, you know, not baseball-minded, and if I am, it's more vintage stuff.

[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I've been using chat GPT quite a bit to do some research on some card values and population.

[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that there's so many great assets now available in the AI industry that can be leveraged for that.

[SPEAKER_04]: I don't look to AI to tell me what to buy or how to live, but I use it as kind of an assimilator of data.

[SPEAKER_04]: And it's like, hey, can you get me these data points that I'm looking for so that then I can apply wisdom and analyze it?

[SPEAKER_04]: And so looking at like pop counts on certain cards or whatever, it's like a little math was pulling this up.

[SPEAKER_04]: Take the mic trout top's rookie, okay?

[SPEAKER_04]: And compare that to a show, ha, Otani, top's rookie.

[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so they both do a similar price point in a PSA 10.

[SPEAKER_04]: But the show has like three times more on the population.

[SPEAKER_04]: But then you translate that to the Bowman Autos, okay?

[SPEAKER_04]: And Otoni does like 10x trout right now, we're pretty close to it, but he has two variations, the batting and the pitching.

[SPEAKER_04]: And so like my trout right now is one of those guys we're looking at and and like I said we're using, you know, some some AI and stuff to do some research and find out like where are populations, you know, really positive and where can you find value so right now when I'm kind of in an anti based on mode I'm looking into the nuance of the industry and a little Matt and I are to kind of do some background research on some value we feel like is there that's maybe being overlooked based on population numbers and stuff like that so.

[SPEAKER_04]: You know, right now we're kind of hanging tight with some cash on the sidelines waiting for the 26 Bowman release, which we're going to talk about today on the episode.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I can understand people wanted to chase him, but just at the price point based on the cost for the break, I imagine, you know, he's an automatic sell for you guys if you pull that, right?

[SPEAKER_04]: The thing is with holiday is, yeah, he's got that family kind of lineage thing or whatever, but it is, it is probably a high sell.

[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's a good player, but I think he's gonna have some speed bumps, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we even saw it in the early going, and yes, it's better this year, but he's still striking out, you know, 27% of the time at Lil A. I think he has huge, huge, huge upside, but as you know, the hobby, the way it goes is like, if he gets up to high A and...

[SPEAKER_00]: And he's going to have to really, really mash to, you know, recapture that hype.

[SPEAKER_00]: And for that reason, I just, at that price point, like if the team spot is about $8 for a case of hobby, like what do you think anything holiday auto is selling for raw?

[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, most of the time when you see like the top chase out of a product when he comes out, I mean, his base auto usually isn't that 3 to 400 range.

[SPEAKER_04]: And they kind of price his auto based off of like so that the boxes are generally priced fairly closely to the top chase is base auto.

[SPEAKER_04]: So like you would think that if you're paying $400 for a slot for the Rockies that you could get 400 for, you know, his base auto and that just doesn't seem like value to me.
