- 0:05Speaker 1: You expect me to remember that stuff.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I know, because I don't remember a damn thing.
- 0:09Speaker 3: So at least this time, I remembered we're supposed to
- 0:12Speaker 3: give people a movie threat.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I'm just here to get mad at 40-year-old movies.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Well, pretty much happens on a regular basis.
- 0:20Speaker 3: So I was once again, I hadn't, I looked through
- 0:22Speaker 3: stuff I'd come in contact with in the real world.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I hadn't seen much that fit. I usually try to
- 0:27Speaker 3: match up something. So I went looking for something and
- 0:29Speaker 3: found something that matches almost exactly. So, Messiah of Evil, 1974.
- 0:37Speaker 3: A young woman goes searching for her missing artist father.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Her journey takes her to a strange Californian seaside town
- 0:44Speaker 3: governed by a mysterious undead cult.
- 0:47Speaker 1: There's a lot going on there.
- 0:49Speaker 3: It already seems kind of interesting, but then I had
- 0:52Speaker 3: no idea.
- 0:53Speaker 2: So the directors are Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I was like, those are the people who, I'm like,
- 0:59Speaker 3: I only know those because those names were on my
- 1:02Speaker 3: wall for years.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Because they are screenwriters that I know. I mean, they
- 1:06Speaker 2: worked with Lucas.
- 1:07Speaker 3: So they did like Indiana Jones. They brought us the
- 1:11Speaker 3: wonder that is Howard the Duck. So if I didn't
- 1:14Speaker 3: want to see it before, now I definitely want to
- 1:17Speaker 3: see Messiah of Evil.
- 1:19Speaker 4: I feel like I've heard about that one in the
- 1:21Speaker 4: same area as the movie that we watched for today.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25Speaker 2: The hell you say. It's nothing like that. Like both weird.
- 1:31Speaker 4: kind of cult 70s 80s movies that are actually way
- 1:35Speaker 4: better than you think they.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Would be yeah it's definitely uh kind of a its
- 1:39Speaker 3: own subgenre well it's also the like small town subgenre
- 1:44Speaker 3: which in anywhere can be small town in england small
- 1:46Speaker 3: town and you know cape cod small town california so
- 1:51Speaker 3: you get into those weird small town craziness it's its
- 1:54Speaker 3: own subgenre too so yeah But yeah, I thought that.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Was at least an interesting entry. Maybe people have other,
- 2:03Speaker 2: better options. We'll see. But in the meantime, you'll listen
- 2:08Speaker 2: to us.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Say ridiculous things like this. She so doesn't fit in
- 2:14Speaker 3: that movie. Like, it is to me the off part
- 2:16Speaker 3: of that movie. The finales are always off for a
- 2:19Speaker 3: lot of people. I don't mind most of them, but
- 2:21Speaker 3: that's the one that's probably the most off for me,
- 2:23Speaker 3: and it's mostly because....
- 2:26Speaker 4: Also the dumbest line ever when they're giving each other
- 2:28Speaker 4: fake names and he's like, I'll call you Lisa. I've
- 2:31Speaker 4: always wanted to meet a Lisa.
- 2:33Speaker 2: That is very exotic. I mean, you don't come in
- 2:37Speaker 2: contact with Lisas.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I have dated two and I do not get around this.
- 2:44Speaker 2: You've learned your lesson.
- 2:46Speaker 5: None.
- 2:47Speaker 2: What do you think? I'm laying off the Lisas from
- 2:49Speaker 2: here on out. Like it's such an exotic name.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Oh, Lisa.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I can't imagine in 1981 that it was an uncommon thing.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Right?
- 2:59Speaker 2: No. I think the actress's name was Lisa. I looked
- 3:02Speaker 2: it up after.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Easy enough to sum up. It's Superbad meets Shaun of
- 3:10Speaker 1: the Dead.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yep.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Pretty much. Even your star didn't want to commit to it.
- 3:14Speaker 2: He's like, I'll do it, but I'm not reading any dialogue.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'm not memorizing. Not reading the script. I'll show up.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I'll use a mop, but I'm not going to.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Freaking say words. Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So dumb. I mean, honestly, in a movie like this,
- 3:31Speaker 1: the answer could be magic. And as long as that
- 3:36Speaker 1: comes from one of the characters and they say it
- 3:38Speaker 1: in an authoritative sort of way, I'm okay with that.
- 3:42Speaker 4: I feel like the marketing didn't do it any favors,
- 3:45Speaker 4: which is weird because it was a really, really good
- 3:47Speaker 4: marketing campaign.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Yeah. But the movie was just so different. We're focusing
- 3:51Speaker 2: on the characters.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Character as though it's a freddy as it's adjacent and
- 3:56Speaker 3: like once you get in there you're like this is
- 3:58Speaker 3: barely about this character really it's it's certainly not it
- 4:03Speaker 3: doesn't need to be sold having to do.
- 4:05Speaker 1: With otherwise it is night of the lepus but with
- 4:11Speaker 1: slugs and they're not gigantic like the bunnies they're.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Not inconsistent like the bunny sizes.
- 4:17Speaker 1: No, they are very inconsistent. But they're not.
- 4:20Speaker 2: And it really is like night and sleep.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I mean, they're big for slugs, but like half the
- 4:24Speaker 1: size of a banana.
- 4:25Speaker 2: But they're not as big as a car sometimes. Sometimes,
- 4:28Speaker 2: but not always.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I mean, there's times where overacting is awesome.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But yeah, in this movie in particular, I'm like, yeah,
- 4:37Speaker 2: it's fine.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 2: It's fine. Go ahead. Go big. It's cool. Which is funny,
- 4:43Speaker 2: because as a kid, I didn't really... Come to terms
- 4:46Speaker 2: with that. And now when I watch it, I'm just like,
- 4:49Speaker 2: what a monster.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 2: This guy's horrible. And then we see little baby Freddy Krueger.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 2: That is what I wrote down. Little Freddy Krueger. Look
- 4:59Speaker 2: at him. Oh, not burned and shit yet. He's just
- 5:03Speaker 2: hanging out with kids. Yeah, it looks good. It's creepy.
- 5:08Speaker 2: But the plot doesn't. do, but I wanted it to be.
- 5:11Speaker 3: It's very procedurally, but I'm like, we've got 14 shows
- 5:15Speaker 3: on a week that do this, so you've got to
- 5:18Speaker 3: really go above and beyond when you're a movie trying
- 5:20Speaker 3: to do the same thing that every cop show trying
- 5:22Speaker 3: to figure out who murdered who does.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So I'm like, this kind of does because it's a
- 5:27Speaker 2: little more dark, but still not really enough to sell
- 5:31Speaker 2: it for what it is that it's trying to be
- 5:33Speaker 2: in the end. That it's annoying when a movie is like,
- 5:37Speaker 2: the devil!
- 5:40Speaker 4: And then every plot hole or anything could just be
- 5:42Speaker 4: explained away by like bull because it's the devil he
- 5:45Speaker 4: can do whatever he wants it's like okay but that's so.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Lazy shows involved and then it's fine if you build.
- 5:53Speaker 6: A talk show around him as a guest then it's
- 5:55Speaker 6: okay well and i guess if they're yeah like if
- 5:58Speaker 6: you know from the beginning that that's what it is
- 6:01Speaker 6: but for some reason it just felt Much more like
- 6:04Speaker 6: a cop-out when you're expecting it to be serial killer
- 6:08Speaker 6: and then instead it's like a devil.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Or whatever. Like, to me, as you're saying that, I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I guess that was.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Like, I'd already kind of forgot what the wrap-up was,
- 6:16Speaker 3: which tells you a little bit about what was going
- 6:18Speaker 3: on there.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, something, I don't know, evil and shit, whatever.
- 6:23Speaker 2: It feels so passé. It's like very 80s. Yeah. Like satanic.
- 6:27Speaker 2: But not in a good way. Yeah. Normally that's a
- 6:29Speaker 2: sales pitch where you're like, oh, really?
- 6:31Speaker 3: Yeah. But no.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it is a product of its director.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yes.
- 6:37Speaker 2: If you like him, I feel like you'll like it.
- 6:39Speaker 3: If you're a horror movie fan and you don't like him,
- 6:43Speaker 3: don't know that it's up your alley.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Because it is not a speedy moving movie.
- 6:47Speaker 1: No, it is not.
- 6:48Speaker 2: It is slow.
- 6:50Speaker 3: And then once it gets going for the zombie movie
- 6:52Speaker 3: that it is, it's still like, wait, what are we doing?
- 6:56Speaker 3: It doesn't operate like your normal zombie movie.
- 7:00Speaker 2: All of his movies look good.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:02Speaker 2: And have that kind of like slow, artsy, cold.
- 7:07Speaker 3: But usually it nails the end and then you're like, okay,
- 7:10Speaker 3: and it made it worth all of this buildup.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah. And this one I was just like, eh, not really. Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 2: It's like, it's fine, but not, not quite up to
- 7:20Speaker 2: your usual thing.
- 7:24Speaker 3: I'm not saying it's not right for horror elements, but
- 7:27Speaker 3: that would just look like a big, dumb, put them
- 7:29Speaker 3: in giant costumes and make things bloody movie. Like, doesn't
- 7:33Speaker 3: make it good exactly yeah it's just the thing you're
- 7:35Speaker 3: doing did.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I ever tell you about the bootleg uh sharpies that
- 7:41Speaker 1: i found no they were called skirples and they were put.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Letters in a bag and drew them out like laying
- 7:50Speaker 3: them out here's what we're spelling.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I found them at a at a peddler's mall type
- 7:55Speaker 1: establishment that seems about right there was a pack of
- 7:58Speaker 1: five of them and they were dirt cheap and I
- 8:00Speaker 1: was like, hey, Sharpies. And it was one of those
- 8:02Speaker 1: things where you're standing, it was so well done.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Like you're standing there looking at it and you're like,
- 8:07Speaker 5: I know something's wrong here.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Sounding it out. That's not right at all.
- 8:13Speaker 1: And it finally dawned on me they were Skirples. And
- 8:16Speaker 1: they were good markers, but they smelled really bad.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Fine tip or just the normal Sharpie?
- 8:22Speaker 1: Normal Sharpie.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I wish I could find more of them.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yeah, the three jobs are sailor in hat, gas station,
- 8:33Speaker 4: and nurse in hat.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Yes.
- 8:35Speaker 2: And diner lady. Gotta have diner lady.
- 8:38Speaker 1: There's a teacher.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true, Janet.
- 8:40Speaker 1: There's a witchcraft slash voodoo teacher.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Like, I literally was like, it was later in the day,
- 8:50Speaker 3: and I was just like, not in a good place.
- 8:53Speaker 3: And I was like, I didn't realize, I was like,
- 8:56Speaker 3: I mean, there's nothing going on today. I was like, oh, yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I forgot.
- 9:00Speaker 3: It put me in their mood so much that I
- 9:02Speaker 3: was like, holy shit. I feel what they're going through.
- 9:06Speaker 2: This is rough.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think I need that right now.
- 9:09Speaker 3: I was going to say, take it into account because
- 9:12Speaker 3: it is so good, but it is real. It is
- 9:16Speaker 3: some hardcore shit going on. But it's also funny at times.
- 9:21Speaker 3: It is meant to be a dark comedy is what
- 9:24Speaker 3: I keep hearing. And most of the time, that's kind
- 9:26Speaker 3: of true. But there are times when I'm like, there
- 9:29Speaker 3: ain't no jokes there, man.
- 9:30Speaker 2: It's dark. It is dark.
- 9:34Speaker 4: That seems so much more like surgically cutting out specific
- 9:38Speaker 4: memories while still remembering other things from your life before.
- 9:42Speaker 1: You just take a scrub brush to their brains.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Seems a lot more complicated.
- 9:46Speaker 1: And there's a close-up of this adorable little slug trying
- 9:51Speaker 1: to take a bite out of his finger.
- 9:53Speaker 2: And you hear it go.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Well, they have that random spooky abandoned house that the
- 9:58Speaker 4: family goes into because they think there will be ice
- 10:01Speaker 4: in there. Well, and then so when he like buries
- 10:05Speaker 4: his wife, now is she dead, dead?
- 10:10Speaker 5: She took her top off. I was like, what kind
- 10:12Speaker 5: of movie is this? And not like, you know, but
- 10:15Speaker 5: it's like, what the hell is this? And then all
- 10:20Speaker 5: of a sudden he gets clubbed in the head.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, it's this kind of movie.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Go get him, Nelson.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Bite his butt.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Oh, he's going to do it.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I hope you're talking to the cat.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I do too.
- 10:35Speaker 2: He sneaks up behind him and bites his back leg
- 10:38Speaker 2: and then they... Flip around and yell at each other.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Especially at three in the morning.
- 10:46Speaker 3: That is the best time to wrassle.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's when you like to wake up your mom.
- 10:57Speaker 3: So go to MovieMeltdown.com, join the Meltdown Horror Club, and
- 11:00Speaker 3: give us possibly a better movie than Messiah of Evil,
- 11:03Speaker 3: but I don't know.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Sounds pretty cool to me.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Or worse, if you can find it.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Maybe you can come up with a better option. You
- 11:08Speaker 2: just let us know.
