[upbeat rock music] The things we talk about before the show- Save it for the show...
• 0:19
[laughs] are often much more interesting than the show itself. [laughs] Uh, welcome everybody to, uh, Full Spectrum Cycling. This will be show number 199. Oh. Ooh. I don't know, the 200, I just...
• 0:33
It's coming, but I don't have anything super special [laughs] planned for it. Well, yes. Except we're gonna do it again- Yeah... on, for the 200th time. Oops. We did it again. Holy mackerel. Maybe we'll, uh, in Las...
• 0:49
I don't know. What happened- Save it for the show. Yeah. Didn't she just have a baby? What happened this week? It was, uh, it was white outside- Have another baby... briefly there. It was nice. I- Briefly white...
• 1:00
yeah, I had-- I will say I, I kinda got a double whammy in that I rode to UWM- [laughs]... with the snow coming out of the east, so it was in my eyes the whole way, and it shifted for the ride home. It was so nice.
• 1:12
Did you ride the Northpo? Of course. Yes, I did see it. And, and- I did see it- Oh, it was doing its lone- I did, I did see it-... lone mean-...
• 1:18
as I was doing my walk from campus back home There was a number of bikes- [laughs]... in the rack this y- today. I was surprised, including- Well, students are back, right?...
• 1:25
including a Dahan, which I thought was pretty, pretty brave. Yeah. Students are back. Yeah, yeah. Students are back. Yes. Yes. The joy. Yes. Yes, they are. I kind of flaked. I was excited that Taco Bell opened.
• 1:38
I wasn't- I'm not lying. The last I made a Taco Bell was when I worked at UWM- Mm-hmm... seven years ago. I was excited that Taco John's opened on Miller Parkway. Yeah.
• 1:48
Feeding, feeding frenzy, feeding frenzy, Taco Tuesday, Taco Tuesday, feeding frenzy, feeding frenzy.
• 1:51
Except I went to Menards that's right across the street, I'm like, "Oh, I'm gonna go to Menards, get some stuff I need," and then- Why would you go to Menards? Like, I suck a douche. 'Cause there's a West...
• 1:59
It, it, it's a West- Because there's a Taco John's right across the street... it's a West Milwaukee super circuit, man. Yeah, it's, because there's a Taco John's right across the street. So how was it? Was the real...
• 2:07
Uh, well, there were about 35 cars in line- Mm... plus about a dozen people inside, so I said, "Gonna have to wait another couple days." Yeah. That's good. Or weeks. Or weeks, yeah. Yeah.
• 2:17
Same thing with, like, fucking Chick-fil-A flying put around. Why? Going, like- Well, I wouldn't go there anyway, but I- I wouldn't wait one minute or... Wait. Never mind. I- No. I'm done. Okay, no.
• 2:26
All you have to do- I'd just drive by... brine your chicken in pickle juice and buttermilk, bread it as you normally would with just lightly flour, psst, psst, psst, boom. You're done. There it is.
• 2:36
Y- you have a goddamn Chick-fil-A sandwich. Chick-fil-A. Then all you gotta do now is find a recipe for a secret- And you can get it- By JK... and you can get it on a goddamn Sunday. All right. Ha-ha.
• 2:46
Well, you certainly wouldn't hear any of those people saying that word. Exactly. [laughs] Right. I'm going the other end- Sunday?... of the spectrum on this one. No, goddamn. Oh.
• 2:54
And I'm not as shitfaced as I was last week. [laughs] No. I'm the, I'm the monkey on top of the banana. I'm riding a good, like, uh,.12. [laughs] Nice. Gotta invoke my Leahy's while I'm Leahy-ing w- month.
• 3:10
By the way, Tony is in the studio. I am. And JK and his more normal guys. Ha, ha, ha. Yes. Yeah, everybody, it's T- Did you listen to it? Did you listen? Oh, hell no. Come on, you gotta listen to it. Yeah, I might.
• 3:22
I might. Dude, dude, it's brutal. [laughs] I might. If you're, if you're gonna do that, you have to listen. [laughs] Yeah, you gotta put yourself through it. All right. Fair enough. Fair enough. Fair enough. Fair enough.
• 3:29
To be fair. To be f- Yes, I get it. I get it. I did not listen to the whole thing yet either. I- Well, yeah, you can imagine... selectively listened. You can imagine.
• 3:34
Speaking of to be fair, did you get my reference, uh, the other day where I have to s- unfortunately spend way too much time chatting with Dell support? Oh. And they always...
• 3:44
It's obviously the same script they're going over, and it's always like, uh, "Can you confirm that the PC has not been dropped?" Yada, yada, yada. And I just respond back with, "Can confirm."
• 3:55
[laughs] I'm like, it's my best Letterkenny reference. Cripes, it's, it, it, it's only a couple minutes into the show, but I'm pushing the button. Oh, wow. Hey, welcome to the radio program, caller.
• 4:05
Who do we have on the line? Hey, good evening, guys. It's, um, uh, Ulroy from, uh, Ontario, Canada calling. Yes. There we go. I knew the show was gonna get good somehow. Yeah. But through no fault of our own.
• 4:17
Well- Well, I, I invoked some Trailer Park Boys and... You were hoping- Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun. Yes... sure, sure enough the Canadians start calling. [laughs] How are you, Ulroy? [laughs] I'm actually doing well.
• 4:30
Uh, I heard you guys having some, uh, uh, experiencing some problems with dealing with tech companies, and I'll tell you, it's been a while since I've phoned in there.
• 4:39
And the reason is, and it's not an excuse, I do apologize, like normal Canadians, we apologize for everything. Right, right.
• 4:44
[laughs] But this is, I think this is a, an, a legitimate excuse, is that m- the phone, uh, provider that we're dealing with, uh, somehow or other cannot connect my home phone with this number.
• 4:58
So I've been dealing with them for the last, you know, they always give you the rigamarole where they're shutting something down or reprogramming something or pushing a button or this, that. Lines...
• 5:07
lights are coming on, lights are going off. And it doesn't seem to correct the problem. So I'm actually phoning in on another line, which is, uh, it's probably gonna cost me a few bucks, but you know what? It's worth it.
• 5:18
Oh. [laughs] And so [laughs] talking- Wow... to you guys, it's been such a whi- it's been a long time.
• 5:23
Um, I did, uh, did I actually hear someone, uh, two, two weeks ago actually say that Ulroy from Ontario, Canada, could come down and spend some time with you guys [laughs] at a punk show?
• 5:36
Well, that's- I may have h- heard that incorrectly, but I think I-... absolutely possible. No, you did hear that. [laughs] Yes, of course. You're always welcome. That, that's an awesome... Thank you for the invitation.
• 5:47
I don't think I'd be able to take you up on this, this short notice with this particular event, but yes, I, I would love to, absolutely love to come down and spend some time with you guys, for sure. Absolutely.
• 5:56
You ke- keep an eye on the, uh, w- w- w- who does most of the punk, like the real big punk shows that's, uh, the place we hate, The Rave?... the ball. You should just keep- Uh, no... an eye on their website.
• 6:07
No, no, no, no, no, no. Oh. Well, that's for- I mean, if-... bigger name... bigger name shows, like, like Social Distortion- Classic Starland or some-
• 6:17
But yeah, I, we not- Oh, I mean, you know, anything, anything- I'm going, I'm going Bar Punk... comes here, I mean, there's small, small schools around here are good too. Yeah, I'm saying Last rites.
• 6:23
I mean, if you see a show you wanna see- Yeah, I mean-... in Milwaukee, know that you have a place to stay when you come to Milwaukee. How's that sound?
• 6:30
I, this, this show, I mean, the punk show would be the, would be the cherry on top of the cake, but I mean, going for a ride, I mean, you guys have, uh, from what, you know, you describe the beers that you guys have down there, and, uh, you know, the, the variety of trails, I mean, that would just be the cherry on the top of the whole thing.
• 6:45
It would be, the whole, the whole package would be amazing. So, I mean, yeah- Yeah... definitely it's a, it's, uh, inspiring me to wanna plan a trip down there for sure.
• 6:53
Clutch, I believe Clutch is playing in- Then pretty soon... late April. Yeah. Yeah. Well, how far is Ontario from Milwaukee? Let's find out. It's not that far. You, are you in Ontario proper? It's not really that...
• 7:07
Yeah, no, you know, it's, it's really not that. It's a, it's kind of a direct, like you can take, almost take the highways directly from, uh, from here. It's not far- Hmm...
• 7:15
to the major highway from here, and then right down to the border of Detroit, and then- Oh... right around. It's just, it's just kind of a- Oh... around the lake kind of- Yeah, you gotta go around...
• 7:23
if it was a direct shot. Yeah. Well, when does the, uh, Vomit Comet start running again? Sometimes you just go across and hit over to Muskegon- Yeah, hit the ferry... and then boom, you cut across. I saw that ferry.
• 7:36
It's, it seemed to be somewhat, uh, cost prohibitive, I may- Yeah, [laughs] totally... I've been looking at a lot of price schemes. Yeah, with, with a car- I mean-... it really is expensive. Oh, shit. Yeah, yeah.
• 7:44
That's like- Yeah... taking like a mini cruise- But it saves-... but not even like worth it... it saves four hours in driving through Chicago. Or, yeah, s- it saves some time. It is- It is- Right, right, right...
• 7:52
so if you just have a bike it's, like, under 200 round trip. Right. Yeah. But if you have a car, then that tacks on- That's not bad... a good chunk. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, I mean, that's not- Yeah, that's- I mean-...
• 8:02
that's definitely reasonable. That'd be- So-... right on. Yeah. So I, t- tell us again what city you're in. I thought it was Ontario. Is it Ontario or is it- Yes. Yes, okay. Yeah, no, no, I'm in Ontario.
• 8:13
I've just, I'm probably, I would say, just an hour west of Toronto. So if you can just sort of follow your way down the major 401 highway- Oh, yeah, sure... um, and yeah, it's, it's not terribly far.
• 8:22
It's not terribly far from Toronto, so it's, if you're look- if you kinda know that area in general, uh, but it's grown up quite a bit, so everything's kind of, as the bigger city gets bigger, we're kinda being e- eaten up by that.
• 8:33
So all the people that are, that are finding that Toronto's becoming too expensive, they have started to move down this way, so- Of course...
• 8:41
you know, it's, it's almost like it's we're the next big- we're the next little town that's being enveloped in the big city, so yeah. Cool. Yeah. Sprawl.
• 8:48
Yeah, you're, you know, eight-ish and a half hours or something, give or take, depending on what route you would actually take to get here. So not- I- i- yeah... too bad...
• 8:56
it also depends on whether or not you're traveling with, with, with two good, you know, biking buddies or if you're taking the family, you know? Uh- Yeah...
• 9:04
family, uh, dynamic is, is slightly different when you have [laughs] kids in the car, and you know, it stops, and, and, uh, pee breaks and- Right... food breaks and all the rest of it.
• 9:12
That, that, that adds a, uh, adds a little bit considerably, but- Well, you know- Yeah...
• 9:16
if you got a, if you got, like, a week to do a trip for a good time, you could, uh, kinda roll through the top of the UP and come through Marquette and do some stuff there, and do some...
• 9:25
You could kinda- That's- You could hit a bunch of good stuff by doing a little circle route back to the- That, that's the way I drove-... homestead... to Montreal and it was great.
• 9:33
There's some beautiful stuff up that way. Upper Wisconsin? Or Upper Michigan. The UP. Up by Marquette. Upper, Upper Wisconsin. Upper Wisconsin's good. It's connected to damn Wisconsin. It ain't connected- Oh...
• 9:44
to damn Michigan. [laughs] Don't get me started here. [laughs] So what are you drinking, Alroy? You know, I actually have, uh, I cracked open a, uh, Fracture Imperial India pale ale. Ooh.
• 9:59
9% ABV, and it's from Amsterdam Brewing from just outside of, just inside of Toronto there. So that's what I'm- Wow... drinking tonight. Wow. Wow. Wow. I guess, I guess we're at the top of the hill too.
• 10:08
[bell ringing] Yeah. We can, we can- We can see that. We can bring out JK's, uh, choice of the day. From the hinterland of Green Bay, Wisconsin, I do believe. Yes, the Artbrew.
• 10:19
I think those guys, uh, they- The Artbrew... at least if in the past they were a sponsor of the Snow Crown, I don't know- Yeah, they had a brewery-... it was the whole series-... in Milwaukee too...
• 10:26
or just the, uh, Shell Track race. But they are- Yeah... definitely, uh, available at s- most of George's races. Uh, and this is the Jamaican Haze IPA clocking in at something. I saw the, I saw the- 6.8...
• 10:42
I saw the, I saw the- [laughs]... Hazy IPA and I'm like, "Oh, just a Hazy IPA," but then there's that little Jamaican up there. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Exactly.
• 10:47
Hope it gets the Sabro hops- It was, it's brewed with Sabro hops, Mon. Mon. Mon. Irie. Yeah. Yeah.
• 10:53
I actually was gonna get- So it's gonna taste like- Actually, I was gonna get an Imperial IPA, um, 'cause it was named Powder, Powder Day, and it was snowing- We should-... like all hell today... we should have that.
• 11:02
And I was like, "Uh." Uh- But it also clocked in at, like, 8.5 or something- Well, last week's was, like, 10 something. 10, 10.5. Yeah, that was a good one though. It was very tasty.
• 11:10
It, it was incredibly drinkable for 10.5, but it also made me feel like shit the next day. That and- All right... you know, two other beers I had. Well, that is good. That's decent.
• 11:18
Yeah, that's actually a very tasty beer. Yeah. It slides. It's almost got, like, a, I don't wanna say coconutty to it, but like a, like a Jamaican scent. I'm trying to figure out what it is. It's not mango. Yeah.
• 11:28
25-year anniversary limited release apparently. Wow. Wow. I didn't know they'd been around that long. Huh. All right, Alroy, uh- Yeah, describe yours... so- Now I'm starting to feel old. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
• 11:38
[laughs] So yours is from Fractured. That's a local Toronto brewery? It, it's, it's, it's from Amsterdam Brewing, but it's called Fracture. So what it is is, like, it's they have one that's called, um,
• 11:50
uh, Bone Shaker, which is, like, 7.1, and then they, they amp it up by the same kind of, uh, skeleton-type character and they just kinda amp it up to 9%.
• 11:59
I mean, there really isn't much difference between 7.1 and, and 9% really. I mean- [laughs]... if you break it down, if you have a couple of them in, in a row and you're- You know, you're g- you'd notice it for sure.
• 12:07
Right. I know you guys aren't nervous about trying something that's a little bit stronger. [laughs] Yeah, it, it's decent. It, it's got a g- it's, uh, it's wo- it's drinkable for sure, but you gotta be careful.
• 12:16
I mean, you can't, uh, [laughs] you don't wanna be doing that multiple ones in a r- a- one after the other. Yeah. [laughs] Sounds like a bad idea. So, uh, yeah. Well, you have to do it once just to- [laughs]... find out.
• 12:27
[laughs] Well, that's- And then not do it again, you know?
• 12:29
It's, you've probably heard me say this, uh, Ulroy, but, you know, we have a brewery up the street that he brewed a beer he claimed was 6.9, and it's closer to, like, 9. And I had- [laughs]...
• 12:41
three of them one day and I crashed going home, and I called him out on it. I'm like, "Dude, there's no way those are 6.4s or something," 'cause I can handle that over the course of three hours. Sure.
• 12:51
That was like the Burnt Hickory. Oh. The Tych- Oh, yeah... the Tycheson Pumpkin Porter- Oh... that clocked in. W- th- when the guy even said it, he was like, "Um, well, it, it's somewhere I think around 9.5 and, uh, 13."
• 13:06
Kinda, kinda does the hand waving thing. You know? Yeah. Yeah. Like, like somewhere in there. Somewhere in there. Yeah, and that's when Sven sat on a barstool [laughs] and in slow motion fell off of it.
• 13:17
[laughs] It was the best thing I've seen for a long time. I- it w- we didn't have, we didn't have this thing called video back then, so I don't think anybody captured it. [laughs] No, no, no.
• 13:23
It's just up in my head and I'm just like, "Oh my God, I've never seen you ever [laughs] take the tumble like that." I don't tumble, that's why. From here to naught and not sometime.
• 13:32
I better not say that, just- Just, yeah, right. Look- So Ulroy- Jinx, jinx, jinx... how's, how's, uh, the weather been treating Toronto? I mean, we, we got our f- basically our first snow of the year today. Today.
• 13:42
Well- Wednesday... Wednesday. Well, la- a couple, whatever- Yeah... a couple days. Today. It keeps going till Friday. We are- Now. Today. [laughs] Yep, it's the, it's the same here.
• 13:52
We actually have had pretty dry c- it's almost like the last few months have been like riding in, like, early November. It's been- Yep... it's been hovering around zero degrees Celsius, 32 Fahrenheit. Yep.
• 14:04
It's been really nice getting to work. I mean, the, the bike hasn't taken a beating with the salt. But today actually, uh, they, they pr- they sort of... They kind of...
• 14:13
Where we are here, it's funny because anywhere north, south, east, west of us, they get a lot more than we do.
• 14:17
For whatever reason, this town that I'm in, like, uh, it's, it's sort of in like a, um, I don't know if it's in a dip or whatever, but we don't get nearly as much snow. But it's- Poor sea...
• 14:25
we're getting, we have about four or five inches right now out there, and it's gonna be a, it's gonna be decent.
• 14:29
The trails will be nice once it settles and once people start tramping it down a little bit and we get biking on it, it's gonna be great. But yeah, this is the first real snowstorm we've had all winter.
• 14:37
We- it's been, it's been unusually dry, I wanna say. Yeah, it's, it's very, very, uh, not characteristic for this, you know- Yeah, for sure... I know, yeah, I heard you guys saying that you haven't had much snow either.
• 14:50
It's not- No, it's terrible... very snowy. Well, basically not until, until today. Oh, it has been- Uh-... bloody nose cold. You know? Like, just enough, just enough dryness in the air to give you a bloody nose.
• 14:58
[laughs] But not, not... Yeah. Ulroy, can you, uh, hang with us for a little bit? We got another caller, like to see what's going on. You w- or you got time to- Happy to... hang on for a minute? Sure. Right on. I do.
• 15:07
Yeah, I can. Yep, yeah, yeah, I'll sit back and you guys do your thing and then get to me when you get to me. Right on. My word. Well, of the radio program caller, we have another guy on the line.
• 15:15
I assume it's a guy 'cause- Well, yeah... we haven't had many women calling. How's it going? Hey, it's Sealy Dave again. There he is. [laughs] Sealy Dave.
• 15:25
You know, we've got Ulroy on the horn too up there from near, uh, Toronto- I heard that... Ontario.
• 15:30
Yeah, so, uh, he, he's, he's- I, I, I was listening, I was listening in for a while and it, it's not quite the shit show that it was last week. [laughs] Oh. Oh, no. Which was delightful. Thank you.
• 15:41
[laughs] Oh, that was- Well, that was sort of fun. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that was- Sometimes you gotta just- Yeah, when-... you gotta, you gotta test, you gotta test the, uh, the integrity of the ship- Mm...
• 15:50
to see if it's gonna sail all the way to show 200. I, I got a contact high. [laughs] I got a contact high out of that one. So, uh, heads up- I'm, I'm just calling in with a quick reminder.
• 16:00
Uh, because today as we, as we listen to our podcast Friday sometime afternoon, um, it is the, um, start of the Fat Bike World Championships in New Richmond again. Right on. Oh, cool.
• 16:14
So I just wanted to remind everybody that if they don't have anything planned this weekend, it sounds like it's gonna be fun.
• 16:21
On Friday night, the headquarters and, uh, I think registration stuff kick off at, uh, the distillery in town. Um, and it, they've got some sort of, uh, some sort of bourbon, bourbon...
• 16:36
bikes, beer, bourbon tailgate party at 45th Parallel Distillery, um- Oh... Friday night, and then, um, racing throughout the weekend. So, uh, I just wanted to remind people of that- Right on...
• 16:48
um, in case- So New Richmond is-... in case everybody had- That's, that's towards the western side of the state over there, not far from the- Yeah, it's kinda towards, like, the St. Croix River and that area.
• 16:57
It's, it's not... You know, it's on the way to, sort of to Minneapolis for, you know, kind of that directions. But, um- Bless his heart... but last year it was a really... It's on a golf course.
• 17:10
It's, they've got a really great, um, course laid out for it, and it goes by a river.
• 17:16
It kinda reminds me of the course, kinda remind- parts of it kind of remind me of the, um, the Menominee River Parkway that we had in Milwaukee, or you still have. Yeah.
• 17:27
Um, and then there's, there's some decent hills, um, but nothing stupid. But it's a great course. Bacon on the course last year. Mm-hmm. Mm. Can't go wrong with that. Right. Uh-huh.
• 17:38
Um, so I just wanted to remind folks that that, that's happening. So- And what are you drinking? What am I drinking? Yeah. I, I am... I, I heard you guys hit the top of the hill.
• 17:49
I actually have a pretty interesting, um, Sweet Water Brewing Company. Ah. Mm-hmm. An Atlanta brewing company. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
• 17:58
Um, I bought it thinking it was a Founder's beer 'cause it was right above the Founders and I think the, the local, um, grocery store actually put it there by mistake 'cause the packaging looked really similar.
• 18:12
Um, anyway, it's a 420 strain G 13- Yeah... IPA. Yeah. Yeah. We have it a lot. I almost got that for our [laughs] You got it? I almost, I almost- Yeah, we... That's been a show beer...
• 18:22
I almost picked it up for our show beer tonight. That's been a show beer. [laughs] It's a de- it's a yummy beer. That is. All right. Yummy. There's a few places in Milwaukee that have it on tap now. Really? Yeah.
• 18:33
I'm not sure I can feel the terpenes in it, that it's- it's got select terpenes mixed to it with a dank IPA. Um- Dank IPA... but it drinks pretty tasty. It's about 6%, so. Yeah. Right on. There you go.
• 18:46
Anyway, I will let you guys get back- Actually... to your official guest. I just wanted to- Oh, no, cool... Thanks for the update, man... thanks for the update. Thurman's has it on tap. Yeah.
• 18:54
And I do believe they charge $4.20 just because. Good principle. Oh, wow. [laughs] Just because. It's clever. Well- That means they have to have a reason to go back to Thurman's... it's like annoying. Yeah.
• 19:04
It's, like, annoying for the bartender and patron, but it's clever. I get it. I like it. Right on. [laughs] Well, there's also that 420, that 420 pale ale out of, like, Colorado somewhere. Yep.
• 19:15
Um, that- that's often on tap places like- Yeah... Pete's or- Oh, yeah... Oscar's has that right now... Pete's usually. Isn't there a 420 right up there- Yeah... at the, uh, the Sawmill sometimes?
• 19:25
Hopsutioner or Hops- That's that Color- that's that Colorado. Oh, okay. Okay. Oh, the Hemperor. The Hemperor was the one that- But that one is, it's just named that-... when they tapped it... because it's from Colorado.
• 19:34
Right. Yeah, for sure. So are you actually going to- That one doesn't have terpenes in it or anything, I don't think... [laughs] are you actually going to these Fat Bike- All right... World Championships, Dave?
• 19:44
I- I, you know, it's on my list. Um, we'll see if I get there. I went last year. It was a lot of fun. No one is getting branded anymore, just in case you're curious. Hmm. [laughs] I guess, I guess they only- Huh.
• 19:59
[laughs] They only branded somebody the first year. Um, and- [laughs] wasn't it, like, Rebecca Rusch or somebody that won the-... there was another year that-... the ladies? I for- I forgot which lady.
• 20:09
It was a f- a fairly famous lady cyclist that won and- Yes... I- not Rebe- uh, Rebecca Rusch maybe. I don't know who it was, but- She... Yeah, I don't remember if it was Rebecca, but I do remember that woman,
• 20:23
semi-pro, won and was kinda drunk and wanted the brand really bad. [laughs] And her boyfriend- That's awesome... her boyfriend convinced the race organizers not to do it. Oh. Oh. That was cool. Come on, now.
• 20:38
And now they're broken up. [laughs] Yeah. That's something that would last forever. This is the shit that makes the world go round. Come on. As long as it's not right on your forehead, I guess. Right. Exactly. Yeah.
• 20:47
Branding's a whole different thing. Yeah, you're not that... No. I saw you at the Riverwest 24, but branding's a whole different story. I've done it in virtual, like- Yeah... I, in, on- In advertent branding...
• 20:57
like, like, yeah. Like, oh, yes, and s- okay, now you gotta deal with this I'm pretty sure everybody that's used a sodding ir- soldering iron has branded themselves at some point [laughs] by accident.
• 21:04
Yeah, when you pi- yeah, when you grab the cast iron pan. Oh, yeah. It's- Yeah. Been there... and you can't... And then your muscle seize up and you can't release it right away- That's why my hand-...
• 21:13
so it just hangs out for a little bit longer than it needs to... that's why my palm is so smooth, because- I know... it's been, it's been burned a few times. [laughs] I know. I...
• 21:20
Yeah, if they wanna go for fingerprints and whatever, oh, hell no. I'm like a CSI FBI episode. All right, Dave. It's like, oh, he doesn't have any. [laughs] Hey, one more question, Dave- Okay... before you go.
• 21:30
Uh, have you had- Yeah... any more snow events since we talked last week? Yes. Yes. It snowed again today. It's gonna snow again Friday. Ah, yes. You're in the white stuff. Yeah. I'm in the white stuff.
• 21:42
I, I know you're, you're, you're getting into the... It's gonna be cold in the next week or two, isn't it? Yeah. Um, it's gonna get cold this weekend. Um, I think, like, uh, subzero temps, like 15, 17 below. Fahrenheit.
• 21:58
Fahrenheit. Um, and then, like, a high of zero or something maybe, um. Also Fahrenheit. It's also the Bear Grease, um, uh, sled dog race, um, this weekend in Duluth, so that's another reason why I'm not...
• 22:09
I'm sort of debating whether I wanna go to the Bear- Oh, yeah, that'd be pretty cool... Grease or whether I wanna go to Fat Bike Hole. It's got doggies. Uh- It's got dogs. Yeah.
• 22:17
Lots of fast dogs, all excited, but- Explo- exploited for sport... so, yes, we have, we have more snow. [laughs] I know. All right, Dave. Well, well, thanks for calling in again. Say hi to Elroy from Canada.
• 22:28
We, we can't apologize for last week. We can just say that was fun. Yeah, man. No, it was fun. I listened to it. I can't be parted. It was pretty wild. Kind of. [laughs] All right, man. Thank you.
• 22:39
[laughs] Have a great one. All right. Adios. I'm just as God made me. [laughs] All right, Elroy. Oh, boy. Seely Game, everybody. [coughs] He's up there from, uh, way up in, uh, in Seely, Wisconsin.
• 22:52
All right, Elroy, you're- He's just getting hammered in snow... you're back... I'm jealous. Elroy's back. Elroy. Yeah. I, I'm just listening in, and I... You know what?
• 23:00
I really, I really do enjoy the fact is that you guys have so many races and so many events, fat bike events. I mean, I'm, I am really envious. We don't...
• 23:09
Unfortunately we just can't seem to get the same sort of, um, energy going here where I am, and it's, it's really tough.
• 23:15
I phoned around actually and just trying to get a feel if there was anything happening as far as, uh, races or events, fat bike, anything, anywhere in, within two hours, three hours' drive from where I am. Wow. Really?
• 23:27
I was informed by one, by one, uh, organizer that just said basically what's happening is because the weather is so unpredictable and because of the low turnout, that they had to...
• 23:38
They put-- They invested a lot of money and a lot of time into, into organizing these events, and it just wasn't, you know, wasn't...
• 23:46
I mean, they didn't mind if they didn't b- you know, make a huge pile of money on it, but it, they, I guess they were just sort of, you know, they weren't even making anything.
• 23:53
If, in fact, they were probably losing a lot of money and a lot of time, a lot of effort. Sure. Sure. And, uh, yeah, they sort of just canceled a lot of events. And I'm- Mm... and this winter has been very bad.
• 24:01
Anybody that's-... not gonna do something, you're probably gonna shy away from doing it in the future. Yeah, I, I mean, well, like, so the- But yeah, I love how you guys have stuff.
• 24:08
Yeah, the Snow Crown series is, uh, uh, Broken Spoke up in Green Bay is the, the instigator of that, and George is the guy that really pushes that event forward.
• 24:18
And he does such a good job that people show up regardless. Like Shelltrack- Yeah...
• 24:21
this year there was no snow, but fortunately it's on the shore of Lake Michigan and you still get sand, so you couldn't do it on anything but a fat bike. You got a big neat hill climb.
• 24:29
But, and he- It's a real quick, short course... I don't know if he, he probably charges something for the race, but- Sure... what he really- I think it was like 20 bucks last time I did it...
• 24:36
Yeah, it's not very expensive. Yeah. And what he really makes money on, obviously, is that people buy fat bikes, and he's one of the bigger fat bike dealers- Sure... I think, in the country, for sure. Mm-hmm.
• 24:44
And then, you know, stuff like the Birkie.
• 24:46
No- The, the fat bike Birkie up there in, uh, near where Seeley: Bay is, is it, it is where it is because of the infrastructure that the Birkie has built over the last however many, 50, 60 years.
• 24:58
And it's just after the Birkie is run, two weeks later they run the fat bike Birkie because it's towards the end of the season and- Yeah... you know, they can't really do much to the course anymore.
• 25:07
And it just happened to be that the, the, the cross-country skiers made it possible to have, uh, a, a venue that allowed thousands of riders to come, where you can't just do that anywhere.
• 25:22
You know, it's like, it's like doing the Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee. You can't go to the cool, shitty little bars anymore- 'Cause there's 300 of you... because there's 500 people on it. There, yeah. So, you know. Yeah.
• 25:31
But yeah, for sure. And, uh, you know, a lot of the events have just, they're in the middle of nowhere, like the, the Levis Mounds, that's pretty much the middle of nowhere in Wisconsin. That, yeah.
• 25:39
Like, lots of people go there 'cause it's a great place to ride. Yeah. You call a race there, they'll be, people will show. You betcha. They got camping.
• 25:45
I- And they have that new place to camp, well, at least sleep indoors now, kind of in the lodge. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 25:53
I, I did see that the, that one event was held there, uh, you were mentioning, that didn't have much snow. But you know what? Honestly, I, I love my fat bike and I don't care if there isn't any snow.
• 26:03
If there's something to ride, as long as it's not- Exactly... uh, you know, wet and cold. I'll either do wet or cold, but not both. And I, I don't mind riding the dry conditions. I mean, I'm, I'm good with whatever.
• 26:13
It's just fun to get around a bunch of other people that are not that serious about it and having some fun on a bike- Absolutely... that looks- Oh, exa- yeah... you know, odd, uh, to some, to some people.
• 26:21
  And I, I love it.
• 26:22
I mean, it's, it's cool to roll up on another fat biker and s- and check out their bike and see what, you know, grab their tires and see how much pressure they're running and asking them a bunch of dumb questions about their bike.
• 26:31
It, I love it. Well, I have a dumb question. You know, it doesn't have to necessarily be snow. What? I, I have a dumb question. What, what's your current rig for your f- your fat bike? And do you only have one?
• 26:40
Because- It, well, [coughs] yeah. So, well, actually, I got something that's super cool, is I, um, right now I'm running a Norco Bigfoot, and, um, it was a 2019 frame that I had.
• 26:52
It was a warrantied issue, so I had to sort of piecemeal it together. So it's not, it's not quite as nice as the 2019 would've been if I would've bought it outright.
• 27:01
[laughs] But so I've kind of got a few, you know, individual, you know, personal pieces on there that I kind of fit together myself that I like. But I did buy this bike from RSD in Toronto. Yep. The Riverside Down- Yep.
• 27:13
Yeah... uh, or it might be in Toronto. We know that frame. Absolutely. Yeah. This, this bike I... So I spied it. It was called the Adventure Rig.
• 27:21
And what it was, it was the, it has the ability to run four-inch tires on 50 mil wide rims, and it has all the brace arms- Oh... for all the bags and all the stuff, but it, but it has the slackness of a, of a trail bike.
• 27:36
And I'm, I'm actually- That sounds really cool... really excited. I haven't actually... Yeah. It's, it's gonna be super cool. I can't wait to actually get the, this...
• 27:43
I had to buy the, it's the same model of bike with a suspension fork, which, which is cool for the summer. And I've ordered the, I've ordered the fork that will accommodate the four-inch tire.
• 27:54
So I'm really excited about trying that bike because it just looks cool. I mean, it, uh- [laughs]... the whole setup just looks really aggressive, and it's, it's a fun bike- Sounds fun...
• 28:03
to ride, and it fits me really nicely. Yeah. It's- Yeah... you know, it's got the dropper post. It's got as many gears as you want in the back, and it's, it's a really fun bike to ride.
• 28:11
And so that's the bike- Send, send some pictures... that I'm looking forward to just throwing the... I will. I will. When I get the fork- I-... I will do a little, like a- Especially the 50 mil, like...
• 28:20
Yeah, I'm excited to see the 50 mil rim with a, with a four-incher on it. Yeah. Well, that's what I run on the Ape. Yeah. 50 mil rims with four-inch tires. Oh, wait, so do I. 27- Uh, duh... 27 and a half?
• 28:31
Uh, no, not 27 and a half. I'm running 26s. Yeah. I'm running 27 and a half. I'm running, we're running 26-inch- Yeah... with, with four-inch tires on a 50- Okay... millimeter rim.
• 28:39
I mean, back in the olden times when the only wheel rim you could buy was a, a Large Marge from Surly, uh, Schlick Cycles- That's right...
• 28:46
which is my partner John and I, we did that North Paw rim, which was a 47 millimeter, but close enough to 50 to call it a 50.
• 28:55
Um, and it was so much lighter that we had a couple good year run of selling them to racers and stuff. And really putting, you know, a f- a four-inch tire on it works great. Uh, five-inch not so much, but m- yeah. Right.
• 29:09
Um, so, uh, s- our, our buddy John Trusky bought, I think it was a s... I don't know if it was a Sergeant or not from RSD, 'cause we've been buddies with Alex for a long time. Yeah.
• 29:18
We got to know him early on in fatbike.com with, uh, their, um, their fat bike, uh, the Mayor. Yes. The Mayor. So- Yep. Yep. Yep, you got it...
• 29:27
but Trusky bought a, so Trusky bought something that has an 83 millimeter bottom bracket, a 150 rear. Uh, it's kind of like a downhill spec for the rear end, but it's what you're talking about. Okay.
• 29:39
You can run, he can run pretty good sized tires in it and then, you know, bigger tires in the, uh, bigger wheels, narrower tires in the summer. And he loves it.
• 29:50
He- I give, uh, you know what, I gotta say that they, they, the reason I was looking, I was originally looking at the Fat, the Mayor, the fat bike.
• 29:57
And I found this bike that, that, you know, I'm not sure, what would you call- Would you call it a fat bike with four-inch tires with 50 mil rim? I mean, it still has the four-inch tire- Yeah...
• 30:05
but the rim itself is, is quite narrow compared to- Yeah... I mean, I'm not sure what you wanna call it. Well- It's not baby fat. It's not- Baby fat...
• 30:12
that's, you know, I don't know what we kinda- [laughs] That's what we kinda... It was like, is it a plus? Well, no, no, but the baby- Is it a plus bike or a baby fat? Yeah. Well, if it's...
• 30:16
Yeah, but yeah, if it's- If the plus size is big... if it's 27.5 and wide, yeah, that would be a baby fat. Yeah. Actually, on eBay I just put up a- Yeah... 27... I put a 27, uh,.5 by 3.25 tire, which is super weird.
• 30:30
It's a V tire, which- Yeah... I don't know. People shouldn't- That's why it's weird... people shouldn't be riding V tires. But it's on eBay- [laughs]... so if you wanna buy it, go ahead.
• 30:37
I, I mean, who am I to tell you what to ride? [laughs] But, um- No, 'cause I r- I, I remember in the, uh, weekly Dose of Fat days, and then there were the plus bikes. Yeah.
• 30:46
And it was like, wait, okay, these are just called... Wait. Baby fat. They're in between. I'm like, it's like baby fat. Well, yeah, but plus was- And it's like, yes, baby fat... definitely 27.5- Baby fat bikes. Boom...
• 30:54
was, was, you know, with close to a three-inch tire. Well, in my head, in, in this head. Yeah. In this head- Yeah, yeah... 27.5 and three-inch or wider tires are baby fat bikes.
• 31:03
Yeah, and 29 plus too were three-inch, and now you can't even really, except maybe a Surly tire. Well, it's 29 plus or 29 plus. Can't find a 29 plus anymore. You can get 2.8s, but not true 3.0s very much, so. Right.
• 31:14
Kind of a bummer. Yeah. And, and for me, that- I-... that, that 29 plus- That sucks... is... And JK too, he's riding- Yo, dude... he's riding it all the time. I'll... Yeah, I'll ride- It's the greatest-...
• 31:22
these till the skins fucking bleed off, man... Yeah, it's the greatest city bike for just, you know, not worrying about curbs and potholes, and if you're gonna be on the street, you're gonna roll fast.
• 31:32
If you're gonna be on the trail, it's gonna be great. Yeah. It's a really good all around city bike- Exactly... uh, for a little more. And, and you can, in a pinch, you can drop it down and play with the fat boys.
• 31:42
Sort of, yeah. Kinda. To some extent. I, well, yes, 'cause I tried... That's what I was spinning on in the sewer tour when I had the meltdown. Oh, the sewer tour. Oh, if Allra ever gets here, we gotta do the sewer tour.
• 31:53
[laughs] Fuck yeah. Yep. We have a mile and half underground in a storm drain that's completely black, and you ride in there, and it takes about a hour to do the round trip. It's so fun. [laughs] That...
• 32:04
I've, I saw you guy- I think you guys have, maybe have posted a picture- Yep... of that, and it looked very cool. I mean, it did. It looked very cool. We... Yeah, we have some underground stuff like...
• 32:13
You're not, not like... I mean, maybe under, like, a pass under a train bridge and stuff that's sort of, kinda dark, but not like that. Yeah. Definitely not sewer. N- definitely not...
• 32:21
There's no water and it's dry, right? So- Yeah, it, it, it's underneath the fairgrounds. Yeah. Yeah. And, I mean, the key to it is you can't just ride out the other end because there's the pit of despair at the far end.
• 32:30
Yeah, [laughs] no shit. Which is made to catch anything coming down the river that goes into the storm drain.
• 32:35
[laughs] So it's, I don't know, it's 30 feet deep and it's got just, like, stuff in there that they don't wanna have it go into the, into the underground pipe areas.
• 32:43
But there's a big gate too, so you can't really get out the one end. Anyway, we probably ought to go do- And the funny- And the cool, well- This sounds like a, like a movie episode... right?
• 32:51
Well, the cool thing is this time of year it's still, like, 55 degrees in there. Oh, shit. Right. Yeah. So it's not... It... Even when it's zero degrees outside, there's no wind and it's 55 underground. Mm-hmm.
• 33:00
It's like being in a cave. It's, it, it's a blast. Oh, for sure. It sounds like it, and it looked, it looked really cool too.
• 33:08
So, I mean, you know, as much as it was dark and you took pictures and stuff, but it, it looked really cool. Yeah. Yeah, for real. Ur- urban riding, man. Urban riding- Good stuff... in the big city...
• 33:16
anything you, anything you wanna leave us with before we, uh, get done with this puppy? Thanks for filling in the show. Right? Wow.
• 33:21
It wouldn't have been so good if you didn't call 'cause we didn't have anything to talk about. We, we can leave the, uh, Carrhaller- Well, you know-... thing for next show. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, no, I'm...
• 33:31
I, I actually was funny because I was re- like, listening to the, two weeks ago to the show, and when I...
• 33:36
It was kinda like one of those things where there was the, uh, the, the, these spy movies where the person calls up the guy and then whispers a secret message in his, in his ear and sa- and reactivate.
• 33:46
And when I heard my na- I was like, "Well, wait a minute. [laughs] Hold on a second. Like, it has been a while since I called in there." And I'm like, "Well, maybe I should call in there again.
• 33:53
Well, maybe I'll make it w- I'll make it happen this Wednesday and I won't miss the opportunity." But yeah, you know what?
• 33:58
[laughs] It, um, yeah, it's been, it's been nice to talk to you guys and, and, uh, definitely I have, you know, in- plans and intentions on, in the future to, to somehow get down there and, and, and- Oh, yeah...
• 34:08
uh, catch up and, uh, go for a boot because it, it looks cool and I love the show, and, yeah, keep doing your thing. Right on. Well, thank you- Amen... for calling. Right on. Thanks. Awesome. Thanks. Appreciate it.
• 34:17
Talk to you next time. Oh. Yep. Thanks, guys. All right, everybody. All Roy. All Roy. All Roy. F- from up there in- Yeah, bye-bye. Yep, bye-bye. Bye.
• 34:26
[laughs] From, from, from up in, from- We have listeners outside of the United States. That's cray cray, man. Well, we had actually two listeners on the show today, so- I know... it's kinda strange. I don't know. Weird.
• 34:37
Must be doing something right. But yeah, it's, it's good to hear from listeners because, hey, listeners, listener, hey, you that didn't call this week.
• 34:43
All you have to do is call the number, which- 717, which is a Pennsyl- 727... 2453, which spells bike. That spells bike, man. But the thing about 717, I'm not sure why his phone company won't do it.
• 34:54
It's a Pennsylvania area code, but our, um, call in studio call, call, [laughs] call screen, call in studio is our software we use. It's a web-based thing, and they, we wanted a number that had a 2453,
• 35:09
and I think our old one was 818-828-2453 for- Something like that... for, uh, the Big Fat Bike show that, uh, Gomez still does, I think. I don't know if that's still the number, but probably.
• 35:21
I don't know why you'd get rid of it. Yeah, right, right. It's a good number. But anyway, yeah, so I like numbers that bounce. I do too. And- 1234... a local place, eh, it's kind of a chain.
• 35:31
What is that racket out there? I don't know. There's a crab rangoon pizza that's on the horizon. What? In our horizon? Not mine. I mean, not... No. Where is this? Ian's. Ian's.
• 35:46
Oh, you know, I might- They do some things-... I might cross that line... dude, they do some things. They, they, they- I might cross that line...
• 35:52
when, when they do the spinach- Thanks- Thanksgiving pizza was not bad [laughs]... when they... Thanksgiving didn't suck. The fact that they supported- The spinach artichoke dip...
• 35:58
all the protesters against Walker got my vote. Just saying, I mean, they don't do- That's Ian's people... a lot of things right. You gonna, you're gonna go with Ian's? Sure. I didn't wanna, like-...
• 36:08
Crab Ranger gluten pizza I, I, probably they ought to sponsor the show now that we've mentioned their name. Exactly. That's how it works, folks. That sounds really good. All right, everybody.
• 36:16
They always fill in- And we're not gonna mention my, uh- Red, red specks? Oh, his, uh, Bubbles glasses. He's got Bubbles. You went with Bubbles. My, my- We're gonna have to take a picture of this folks, so.
• 36:27
No, and my, my coworker- Put 'em on straight though so they're not crooked. There you go... and my coworker during a Zoom meeting was like, "Are you Sally Jessy Raphael?"
• 36:38
[laughs] Oh, that is a perfect- And I was like, "That was an awesome deep pull." Yeah, he's way better than I am. I wasn't... Oh, shit. Bubba- Bubbles is easy. That was a, that was a good deep pull. Oh, hell yeah, yeah.
• 36:47
He said that and I, well, I d- yeah, I laughed very... I was like, "Dude, you got me." [laughs] I laughed very- Well, yeah, sometimes you just gotta- That's, that's pretty awesome... ha ha ha ha. Yes.
• 37:00
Thank you for the attempt at a joke and whatever, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So are tho- But that one's good... those are, those are subscription glasses, huh? No, they're just, uh- Readers? Oh, they're readers. Yeah.
• 37:09
Two- Oh, they're big-ass readers. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Gotcha. My mom... But, but they have the, the bendies. So I don't- Oh, so you can't break them as much. Exactly. Inged. Right. Inged.
• 37:19
And, well, actually, these were given to Kim and she's like, "I'm never gonna wear these," and I'm just like, "Give 'em to me, man. I'll fucking wear 'em." Yeah.
• 37:25
Speaking of Kim, we're gonna have to go pick her up or something. When are you getting married? I don't know, sometime. It's sometime in the future. Sometime before October. Sometime before retirement, I guess.
• 37:36
There you go. Well, that's pretty good. I think. Oh, well. I'm not positive. We're not going to Portugal, are we? I actually... No, no, no. Uh, uh- Uh... One thing I am scheming is Las Vegas. And- Las Vegas...
• 37:46
and I'll say it- Fucking hate Las Vegas. Hey. I love Las Vegas. It's so great. [laughs] Just don't go to the shitty part of it. Listen to the words coming out of my mouth.
• 37:54
They are that the B52s are doing their farewell- We discussed this. We discussed this. Okay... their farewell tour. Mm. And- That I'll do... their last tour, like, is September 3rd, I wanna say, at The Venetian. Humph.
• 38:11
And, you know, hey, whatever. Vegas, of course. I love Vegas. All right, everybody, thank you for listening to this very, very good show thanks to Elroy- We're a deadbeat club... and our buddy, Sealy Dave. Deadbeat club.
• 38:23
And a non-super hammered JK. It was awesome. Thanks, everybody. Deadbeat club. Bye bye. Thanks for the new pants. [upbeat music]
