- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Good morning everybody.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I'm a little uh off schedule by about a minute or so or half a minute.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: I uh still fighting a bit of a cough, so y'all better be praying for me, man.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: What are y'all up to?
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Y'all supposed to be keeping me straight.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Um I wanted to get straight into something this morning.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: We talk a lot about what's stopping us, what you know, we we set out to have a good day, we pray, we do what we think we know to do, and next thing you know, we're caught in the same cycles we've been fighting for years, maybe decades.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And um I just wanted to throw around with you uh just some very clear, simple.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Remember, simple and easy are not the same thing, but some very clear and simple uh steps that I've learned that have helped me.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Remember, um I've been talking about the fact that an old stronghold had kind of resurrected itself, uh, a stronghold that I wrestled with all my life, and uh, you know, was connected to things with my earthly father.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And um what I want to do today is just use three scriptures and um give you three clear, simple steps of how you can begin to do something about that.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: 2 Corinthians 10 verse 3 through 6 says this though we walk in the flesh, the natural, and we're affected by things from the outside in, we don't war according to the flesh.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: In other words, the battle we fight isn't from the outside in based on external factors.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: For the weapons of warfare are not of the flesh, but they're divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: In other words, a fortress is a is a is a fortified, well-built, thought-out, protective.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: In other words, there's strongholds inside your mind that are protecting lies.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And those lies are affecting you every day.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: In other words, there's things God wants you to know, and what blocks you from knowing them is other things that you know that aren't true and that distort your perception of yourself and uh where you fit and what you have to do to be accepted in love.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: But we're taking every thought captive.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Now that's the thought we're gonna, or the phrase we're gonna zero in on.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: We're taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: In other words, we're grabbing thoughts and then we're putting them through a filter.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Is this thought in agreement with God's truth?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Is this thought in agreement with what God says about me, thinks about me, feels about me, and has planned for me?
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And we're ready to punish all disobedience, all disobedience in our thoughts, when our obedience is complete.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: So there's a process.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: One more scripture, not one more, two more.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Genesis chapter 3.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, the fall happened.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: God came to walk with them, and uh he says, Adam, where are you?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And then here's here's what Adam says.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Adam says, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Fear, shame, and isolation.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I believe those are the default presets of the human soul that we're we fear rejection.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: We fear rejection because we know we're flawed, who isn't, and we are deeply, catastrophically flawed when it comes to uh operating in a in a relationship with a holy God.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: So fear of rejection, shame of our condition, and then because of that, we hide, we isolate, we we we project um image and performance and all of those kinds of things.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: But it's interesting to me, and this is this would be our second phrase.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: The first one is taking every thought captive.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: The second one is this one.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Immediately after that, God says, Who told you that?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Who told you that?
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And then he goes on to say, You were naked.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Who told you that you were naked?
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: But but again, for for our purposes, we're gonna take every thought captive, and then we're gonna ask every thought a question.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Who told me that?
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Please, please, please.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: This is so simple, but it's so powerful.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: I've told you before, one of my stronghold thoughts was you're lazy and you'll never amount to anything.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: My father would say that.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Now, he didn't say it a lot, but he he said it with his behavior when he didn't say it with his words.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: So in my soul, I had a stronghold.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: My definition of a stronghold is any uh any pattern of thought, belief, and behavior that contradicts God's truth.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Any any cycle or pattern of thought, belief, and behavior, thought, belief, and behavior that contradicts God's truth.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: You're lazy and you'll never amount to anything.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Well, Genesis 3.11 says to grab that thought from 2 Corinthians 10, take every thought captive, grab the thought, and then ask it this question.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Who told me that?
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Alright, let me do one more and then we're gonna summarize it all.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Romans 12, 2, familiar to most of us.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Don't be conform to this world, but be transformed, be changed.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Who in the world doesn't want to be changed?
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And if you're hanging in there with me over these weeks, uh that must be one of your goals because that's what we talk about.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: So don't be conform to this world.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: In other words, again, outside in, don't model yourself from the outside in and the truths, principles that you've received from the outside in, but be transformed, be changed by the renewing of your mind, excuse me, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good, acceptable, and perfect.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So here the phrase is be transformed.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: How?
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: By changing your behavior, by being approved by the right people, by following certain rules.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: No.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: It says, be transformed, change from your current state to another by renewing your mind, renovating your mind.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, what I just did was I gave you three steps.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And this is again, I'm trying to make this as quick and simple as I can.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: What you want to do is identify the lies that are blocking you from God's best, challenge them.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, grab them and then put them through an intense interrogation.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Identify, challenge, and then the third is change, or you could say exchange.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Identify.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Take every thought captive.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Here's the problem: to take a thought captive, you've got to slow down, and that's what we've been talking about lately.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Remember the thing I've said the last few weeks.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Common phrase in our culture: don't just sit there, do something.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: If you're gonna get good at this, you've got to change that phrase to don't just do something, sit there.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Because you've got to practice.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Talked about this in a past session, thought awareness training.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Thought awareness training.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: You've got to practice being aware of what you're thinking.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: You've got to learn to think about what you're thinking.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: And of course, you know, we're gonna try to work on helping you learn to do that.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: So take every thought captive, that's identify.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Who told you that?
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Grab that thought and ask it questions.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Who told you that?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: In my case, it was my earthly father.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Well, remember, whoever's words define you is your God.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: So who told me that?
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: My earthly father.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Do I want his words to define me?
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: No.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: So I asked my heavenly father, do you agree with that, sir?
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: And this is where the third comes in.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: And what I began to learn to do, this is my earthly father's voice and opinion.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: This is my heavenly father's, and what I began to learn to do was exchange their position.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Did I still care about what my earthly father thought and felt?
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Of course I did.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Did I still want his approval?
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: But what I learned to do was recognize that because of what Jesus did for me, I already had my heavenly father's approval.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: So I was struggling to get approval from the outside in, from earthly factors, people, situations, etc., when I already had it from God, my creator.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: And when I learned to identify the thoughts, challenge them, and exchange them, I started to experience a level of freedom in my ability to be myself that uh I didn't even know was possible.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: So chew on that.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Before too much longer, I'm really trying to get over this crazy cold uh so it's affecting what I can venture out into.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: But before too much longer, we're gonna have some extended time where you can uh question questions and discussion.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And so keep an eye out for that.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Please spread the word and uh love you guys.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Have a great day.
