- 1:00Let's get started.
- 1:03John, chapter 19. Then pilot ordered that Jesus be taken away
- 1:08and wept. The soldiers made a crown from some thorny branches
- 1:12and put it on Jesus's head and put a purple robe around him.
- 1:16Then they came to him many times and said Hail King of the Jews
- 1:20and hit him in the face. Again, Pilate came out and said to
- 1:24them, Look, I'm bringing Jesus out to you. I want you to know
- 1:28that I find nothing against him. So Jesus came out wearing the
- 1:32crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, here
- 1:36is the man. When the leading priests and the guards saw
- 1:40Jesus, they shouted, Crucify Him, Crucify Him. But Pilate
- 1:44answered, crucify Him yourselves because I find nothing against
- 1:48him. The leaders answered, we have a law that says he should
- 1:52die because he said he is the Son of God. When Pilate heard
- 1:56this, he was even more afraid. He went back inside the palace
- 2:00and asked Jesus, where do you come from? But Jesus did not
- 2:04answer him. Pilate said, You refuse to speak to me? Don't you
- 2:09know I have power to set you free and power to have you
- 2:12crucified? Jesus answered. The only power you have over me is
- 2:17the power given to you by God. The man who turned me into you
- 2:22is guilty of a greater sin. After this pilot tried to let
- 2:26Jesus go, but some of the crowd cried out. Anyone who makes
- 2:31himself king is against Caesar. If you let this man go, you are
- 2:35no friend of Caesar. When Pilate heard what they were saying, he
- 2:39brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at the place
- 2:42called the stone pavement. In the Hebrew language, the name is
- 2:46Gabbatha. It was about noon on preparation day of Passover
- 2:51week. Pilate said to the crowd, here is your King. They shouted,
- 2:55take him away, take him away, crucify him. Pilate asked them,
- 3:01Do you want me to crucify your king? The leading priests
- 3:04answered, the only King we have is Caesar. So Pilate handed
- 3:08Jesus over to them to be crucified. The soldiers took
- 3:13charge of Jesus, carrying his own cross, Jesus went out to a
- 3:17place called the place of the skull, which in the Hebrew
- 3:20language is called Golgotha. There they crucified Jesus. They
- 3:26also crucified two other men, one on each side, with Jesus in
- 3:30the middle. Pilate wrote a sign and put it on the cross it read,
- 3:35Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. The sign was written
- 3:39in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. Many of the people read
- 3:43the sign because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the
- 3:46city. The leading priest said to Pilate, don't write the King of
- 3:50the Jews, but write, this man said, I am the king of the Jews.
- 3:55Pilate answered, what I have written, I have written after
- 3:59the soldiers crucify Jesus, they took his clothes and divided
- 4:02them into four parts, with each soldier getting one part, they
- 4:07also took his long shirt, which was all one piece of cloth woven
- 4:10from top to bottom. So the soldiers said to each other, we
- 4:15should not tear this into parts. Let's throw lots to see who will
- 4:18get it. This happens so that this scripture would come true.
- 4:22They divided my clothes among them, and they threw lots from
- 4:25my clothing. So the soldiers did this. Standing near his cross,
- 4:30where Jesus mother, his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of
- 4:33Clovis, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the
- 4:38follower, he loved standing nearby. He said to his mother,
- 4:42Dear woman, here is your son. Then he said to his follower,
- 4:46here is your mother. From that time on the follower took her to
- 4:51live in his home. After this, Jesus knew that everything had
- 4:55been done, so that the scripture would come true, he said, I am
- 4:59thirsty, there was a jar full of vinegar there. So the soldiers
- 5:04soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a branch of a hyssop
- 5:07plant and lifted it to Jesus mouth. When Jesus tasted the
- 5:11vinegar, he said, It is finished. Then he bowed his head
- 5:15and died. This day was Preparation Day. And the next
- 5:20day was a special Sabbath day. Since the religious leaders did
- 5:24not want the bodies to stay on the cross on the Sabbath day,
- 5:28they asked Pilate to order that the legs of the men be broken,
- 5:31and the bodies be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the
- 5:35legs of the first man on the cross beside Jesus. Then they
- 5:38broke the legs of the man on the other cross beside Jesus. But
- 5:42when the soldiers came to Jesus in saw that he was already dead,
- 5:46they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers stuck his
- 5:50spear into Jesus side, and it wants blood and water came out.
- 5:55The one who saw this happen is the one who told us this. And
- 5:59whatever he says is true. And he knows that he tells the truth,
- 6:03and he tells it so that you might believe these things
- 6:07happened to make the scriptures come true. Not one of his bones
- 6:10will be broken. And another scripture says, they will look
- 6:14at the one they stabbed. Later, Joseph from era Muthiah asked
- 6:19Pilate if he could take the body of Jesus. Joseph was a secret
- 6:23follower of Jesus, because he was afraid of some of the
- 6:26leaders. Pilate gave his permission. So Joseph came back
- 6:30and took Jesus body away. Nicodemus, who earlier had come
- 6:35to Jesus at night, went with Joseph, he brought about 75
- 6:39pounds of myrrh and aloes. These two men took Jesus body and
- 6:44wrapped it with the spices in pieces of linen cloth, which is
- 6:47how they bury the dead. In the place where Jesus was crucified,
- 6:52there was a garden in the garden was a new tomb that had never
- 6:56been used before. The men laid Jesus in that tomb because it
- 6:59was nearby, and they were preparing to start their Sabbath
- 7:03day.
- 7:03John chapter 20. Early in the morning of the first day of the
- 7:07week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb
- 7:11and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. She
- 7:15ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus
- 7:18loved and said, they have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we
- 7:21don't know where they've put him. Peter in the other disciple
- 7:24left to go to the tomb. They were running together, but the
- 7:28other disciple ran faster than Peter, and was the first to
- 7:31arrive at the tomb. Bending down to take a look, he saw the linen
- 7:36cloths lying there, but he didn't go in. Following him,
- 7:41Simon Peter entered the tomb and saw the linen cloth lying there.
- 7:45He also saw the face cloth that had been on Jesus head. It
- 7:49wasn't with the other clothes, but was folded up in its own
- 7:51place. Then the other disciple, the one who arrived at the tomb
- 7:55first also went inside, he saw and believed, they didn't yet
- 8:00understand the Scripture that Jesus must rise from the dead.
- 8:04Then the disciples returned to the place where they were
- 8:07staying. Mary stood outside near the tomb, crying, as she cried,
- 8:12she bent down to look into the tomb. She saw two angels dressed
- 8:16in white seated where the body of Jesus had been one of the
- 8:19head in one at the foot. The angels asked her Woman, why are
- 8:24you crying? She replied, they've taken away my Lord, and I don't
- 8:28know where they've put him. As soon as she had said this, she
- 8:31turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she didn't
- 8:34know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you crying?
- 8:39Who were you looking for? Thinking he was the gardener?
- 8:42She replied, sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where
- 8:46you've put him and I will get him. Jesus said to her, Mary,
- 8:50she turned in said to him in Aramaic, Rabu and I, which means
- 8:55teacher, Jesus said to her, don't hold on to me, for I
- 8:59haven't yet gone up to my father, go to my brothers and
- 9:02sisters and tell them I'm going up to my Father and your Father,
- 9:06to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene left and announced to
- 9:11the disciples, I've seen the Lord, when she told them what he
- 9:14had said to her. It was still the first day of the week, that
- 9:18evening, while the disciples were behind closed doors because
- 9:21they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Jesus came and
- 9:24stood among them. He said, Peace be with you. After he said this,
- 9:29he showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the
- 9:33Lord, they were filled with joy. Jesus said to them again, Peace
- 9:37be with you, as the Father sent me, so I am sending you then he
- 9:42breathed on them and said, received the Holy Spirit. If you
- 9:46forgive any one sins, they are forgiven. If you don't forgive
- 9:50them, they aren't forgiven. Thomas, the one called didn't
- 9:54miss one of the 12 wasn't with the disciples when Jesus came,
- 9:59the other disciples told him, we've seen the Lord. But he
- 10:02replied, Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my
- 10:07finger in the wounds left by the nails and put my hand into his
- 10:10side, I won't believe. After eight days his disciples were
- 10:15again in a house and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors
- 10:19were locked, Jesus entered in stood among them, he said, Peace
- 10:23be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here.
- 10:27Look at my hands, put your hand into my side, no more disbelief.
- 10:33Believe. Thomas responded to Jesus, my Lord in my God. Jesus
- 10:40replied, Do you believe because you see me happier those who
- 10:44don't see and yet believe. Then Jesus did many other miraculous
- 10:49signs in his disciples presence, signs that aren't recorded in
- 10:52this scroll. But these things are written so that you will
- 10:56believe that Jesus is the Christ, God's Son, and that
- 11:00believing you will have life in his name.
- 11:03John, chapter 21. Jesus later appeared to His disciples along
- 11:08the shore of Lake Tiberius, Simon Peter Thomas, the twin,
- 11:12Nathaniel from Cana in Galilee. And the brothers James and John
- 11:16were there together with two other disciples, Simon Peter
- 11:20said, I'm going fishing. The other said, we will go with you.
- 11:24They went out in their boat, but they didn't catch a thing that
- 11:27night. Early the next morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but
- 11:31the disciples did not realize who he was. Jesus shouted,
- 11:35friends, have you caught anything? No, they answered. So
- 11:39he told them, let down your net on the right side of your boat
- 11:42when you will catch some fish. They did. And the net was so
- 11:45full of fish that they could not drag it up into the boat. Jesus
- 11:49favorite disciple told Peter, it's the Lord. When Simon heard
- 11:53it was the Lord. He put on the clothes he had taken off while
- 11:56he was working. Then he jumped into the water. The boat was
- 11:59only about 100 meters from shore. So the other disciples
- 12:03stayed in the boat and dragged in the net full of fish. When
- 12:06the disciples got out of the boat, they saw some brat and a
- 12:09charcoal fire with fish on it. Jesus told his disciples, bring
- 12:13some of the fish you just caught. Simon Peter got back
- 12:16into the boat and dragged the net to shore. In it were 153
- 12:20large fish, but still the net did not rip, Jesus said, Come
- 12:25and eat. But none of the disciples dared ask who he was.
- 12:28They knew he was the Lord. Jesus took the bread in his hands and
- 12:32gave some of it to his disciples. He did the same with
- 12:35the fish. This was the third time Jesus appeared to His
- 12:38disciples after he was raised from death. When Jesus and his
- 12:42disciples had finished eating, he asked, Simon, son of John, do
- 12:46you love me more than the others do? Simon Peter answered, Yes,
- 12:50Lord, you know, I do. Then feed my lambs. Jesus said, Jesus
- 12:55asked a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter
- 13:00answered, Yes, Lord, you know, I love you. Then take care of my
- 13:04sheep. Jesus told him. Jesus asked a third time, Simon, son
- 13:10of John, do you love me? Peter was hurt because Jesus had asked
- 13:14him three times if he loved him. So he told Jesus, Lord, you know
- 13:19everything, you know, I love you. And Jesus replied, Feed my
- 13:23sheep. I tell you for certain that when you were a young man,
- 13:26you dressed yourself and went wherever you want it to go. But
- 13:30when you are old, you will hold out your hands, then others will
- 13:33wrap your belt around you and lead you where you don't want to
- 13:36go. Jesus said this to tell how Peter would die and bring honor
- 13:40to God. Then he said to Peter, follow me. Peter turned and saw
- 13:45Jesus favorite disciple following them. He was the same
- 13:48one who had sat next to Jesus at the meal and it asked Lord, who
- 13:52was going to betray you? When Peter saw this disciple, he
- 13:55asked Jesus, Lord, what about him? Jesus answered, what is it
- 13:59to you if I want him to live until I return? You must follow
- 14:03me. So the rumors spread among the other disciples that this
- 14:06disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say he would not
- 14:10die. He simply said, What is it to you if I want him to live
- 14:14until I return? This disciple is the one who told all of this, he
- 14:19wrote it, and we know he is telling the truth. Jesus did
- 14:22many other things. If they were all written in books, I don't
- 14:26suppose there would be enough room in the whole world for all
- 14:28the books.
- 14:31Well, beloved, today we read in chapter 19, about the
- 14:34crucifixion of Jesus. And in chapter 21, we read about some
- 14:39of the appearances of Jesus after the resurrection and
- 14:42before His ascension. Of course, every event spoken of in these
- 14:46three chapters is worthy of further comment, but there's
- 14:49just one word in these three chapters that gets to me every
- 14:53time I read it, one word. Can you guess what that word is?
- 14:58Mary. Picture it. Here she is standing at the opening of the
- 15:03tomb that had held Jesus broken body. She's utterly broken
- 15:07hearted that someone has apparently taken him away. And
- 15:11all she wants is for this person who she thinks is a gardener to
- 15:15tell her where they've taken him. She's weeping. She's nearly
- 15:19inconsolable. All she can think of is fighting her Lord. How do
- 15:24I know this? Well, in nearly every mention of a person coming
- 15:28in contact with an angel, we're told that the person is
- 15:31terrified. So many times scripture reports that the angel
- 15:36says, Be not afraid. But here Mary sees two angels sitting
- 15:41where Jesus body had been. And we don't read anything about
- 15:45Mary being frightened at all. The angels asked Mary why she
- 15:49was crying, and she answers them like she was talking to any
- 15:52normal person. All she can think of is fighting her Lord. And
- 15:57when she turns around to leave, and Jesus is standing there, she
- 16:01doesn't recognize him. We're not told why. Maybe she couldn't see
- 16:06clearly because of the tears in her eyes. Maybe she didn't even
- 16:10look directly at him. Maybe her gaze was directed at the ground.
- 16:13Maybe Jesus appearance was altered in some way. But
- 16:17whatever the reason, she didn't recognize him. So she said to
- 16:21him, Sir, if you've taken him away, tell me where you've put
- 16:24him and I will go and get him. And that's when it happened. He
- 16:28said her name. Mary. In John 10:27, Jesus said, My sheep hear
- 16:35my voice. There was something about the way Jesus said her
- 16:39name that made the reality of who this was standing in front
- 16:43of her caused her to cry, teacher, and she either fell on
- 16:47her knees and hugged his legs or just hugged him while they were
- 16:50standing. What a joyful scene. And now the tears were of
- 16:54happiness and relief. Mary, she had heard him say her name so
- 17:00many times before, and no one said it like he did. Once she
- 17:04heard him say her name. There was no doubt. Both of my parents
- 17:09had been gone for many years now, but I can still hear what
- 17:12it sounded like when they said my name. I daresay I'll probably
- 17:16never forget the sound of their voices when they said, Steven,
- 17:19and I'm guessing you can hear how somebody you love says or
- 17:23said your name. I don't know what Jesus physical voice sounds
- 17:27like. But I have felt him speak to me in that still small voice.
- 17:32But Oh, how I look forward to hearing his voice call my name
- 17:35when I see him face to face. How about you? I'd love to hear your
- 17:39comments. Go over to Lifespring media.com/s 12 e 262. And let me
