- 0:33Amen.
- 0:40Welcome into the arena.
- 0:42This is the Arena of Blaze podcast, and
- 0:45I'm your willing host, Marko Sandoval.
- 0:48I'm joined, as always, by my fellow son
- 0:50of Mark, Todd Powers.
- 0:53Today we have the privilege of being joined
- 0:55by Father Carney.
- 0:56Father Carney is the priest walking the streets
- 0:59of Wichita, Kansas, and preaching on the devotion
- 1:03of the Holy Face to the Holy Face
- 1:05of Jesus.
- 1:06I would hope that we could start a
- 1:09series on the Manual of the Archconfraternity of
- 1:12the Holy Face, which was printed in 1887.
- 1:18And so perhaps we could just do a
- 1:20couple pages a day.
- 1:22And so the first page has the conditions
- 1:25to be a member of the Archconfraternity.
- 1:27There's six of them.
- 1:29The first one is to be inscribed on
- 1:31the register of the Oratory of the Holy
- 1:33Face.
- 1:34The second one is to receive the Rule,
- 1:36with the Certificate of Admission.
- 1:39The third one is every day to recite
- 1:41for the intentions of the Archconfraternity in Latin
- 1:43or English, Apater Ave Gloria, and the invocation,
- 1:47Domine Ostende Patium Tuum, et Salve Eremus, Lord,
- 1:52show us thy face and we shall be
- 1:53saved.
- 1:54And for those of you that don't know
- 1:55Latin, pater means our father, ave means a
- 2:00Hail Mary, and gloria means glory be to
- 2:03the Father.
- 2:04Number four, to wear a little effigy of
- 2:07the Holy Face, either on a cross, medal,
- 2:09or scapular.
- 2:11And so we'll find later on that this
- 2:14Holy Face is not just any image of
- 2:16the Holy Face, but it's the image that
- 2:18Jesus left when he was carrying his cross.
- 2:22It's called the Vow of Veronica.
- 2:27And number five, to assist as far as
- 2:31may be possible at the monthly meetings.
- 2:35So to assist in as far as may
- 2:37be possible at the monthly meetings.
- 2:40And so that is really an important condition,
- 2:43because the world and the revolution wants to
- 2:46cover our faces and keep us isolated, but
- 2:48this devotion is about coming together to see
- 2:51each other face to face.
- 2:54And six, to propagate to the utmost of
- 2:56our power the devotion to the suffering face
- 2:58of our Lord.
- 3:00So those are the six conditions.
- 3:02And then this is the image, the true
- 3:07copy of the Holy Face of our Lord
- 3:10Jesus Christ, which is presented and venerated very
- 3:15religiously at Rome in the Basilica of St.
- 3:18Peter at the Vatican.
- 3:21And so before we finish up, just as
- 3:25the traditional Latin Mass has a book, it's
- 3:27called the Roman Missal for the Mass in
- 3:30Latin, and it's very powerful to say the
- 3:34Mass in that way, and the way to
- 3:37practice the Holy Face devotion has a book.
- 3:39It's this one.
- 3:40And so this is the front page, and
- 3:43it says, Manual of the Archconfraternity of the
- 3:46Holy Face, all by a little office of
- 3:49the Holy Name of God by the Reverend
- 3:52Abbe Honvier.
- 3:53And so he was Dean of the Metropolitan
- 3:55Chapter of Tours, a priest of the Holy
- 3:57Face, and this is very important, with the
- 4:02approbation of Monsignor the Most Reverend Archbishop of
- 4:05Tours.
- 4:05And so I'll talk about that next time.
- 4:08And this was translated from the French by
- 4:10Mrs. A.R. Bennett, and at the bottom
- 4:13it says, Tours, Oratory of the Holy Face,
- 4:18and then it has the road 1887.
- 4:21So when people follow the Holy Face, this
- 4:23manual has been my little secret of great
- 4:28success is because it's following it the way
- 4:30that it was given to us.
- 4:32So do you have any thoughts on that?
- 4:36One question I have is the copy.
- 4:37You said the true copy of the Veil
- 4:40of Veronica.
- 4:41Could you expand on that just a little
- 4:43bit?
- 4:44The true copy is when Veronica gave her
- 4:50veil to Jesus when he was carrying his
- 4:53cross, that he wiped his face on it
- 4:54and left his image.
- 4:57And this is a very brief history, but
- 4:59she went to Rome when Saints Peter and
- 5:03Paul were there, and she brought the veil
- 5:06with her and showed it to the known
- 5:10leader of the world, who was the emperor,
- 5:12Augustus Tiberius, who had leprosy.
- 5:14And when she opened the veil to him,
- 5:16he was cured instantly because he wanted to
- 5:19be healed by Jesus.
- 5:20But Jesus had been crucified before Jesus could
- 5:24be summoned to Rome.
- 5:26And so when Veronica passed away, she gave
- 5:30the veil to Pope Clement I, who was
- 5:35the fourth pope, who was Pope from 91
- 5:37to 100.
- 5:38And so where's the veil now?
- 5:40It's in Saint Peter's Basilica Church, and it
- 5:44comes out once a year on Passion Sunday
- 5:47during Lent.
- 5:48And two canons or two archbishops will take
- 5:52the veil, and like a monstrance, they'll bless
- 5:54the people with the Veil of Veronica.
- 5:56And so hopefully I'll be going there next
- 5:58year to see it for the first time
- 6:01in my life.
- 6:02So that's a good question.
- 6:03Another thing I would say is it is
- 6:06consistent.
- 6:07I hear people ask, now how do you
- 6:09do this devotion?
- 6:10It seems like the evil one has cast
- 6:13a little bit of a confusion around it.
- 6:16And so just in my experience as somebody
- 6:18who practices it, it's one of those things
- 6:22where you just have to actually interact with
- 6:25it.
- 6:26You learn it.
- 6:27You learn by doing it.
- 6:30It's best to get the manual and read
- 6:33it, and then it's best to get the
- 6:35chaplet in your hand.
- 6:36Because I remember the first stumbling block was,
- 6:38okay, what senses are where?
- 6:40And I kind of came up with my
- 6:41own system, touch, and then the senses kind
- 6:44of follow down from your ear into the
- 6:46face.
- 6:46So it's very much something that you have
- 6:49to learn by doing, I think.
- 6:52What it does is it enhances our spiritual
- 6:55life without adding a lot more time to
- 6:59our spiritual life.
- 6:59Because a lot of people are scared to
- 7:01add more already, because they're already drawn in
- 7:04so many different ways in their states in
- 7:06life.
- 7:07And so this devotion enhances our spiritual life
- 7:11as it is already.
- 7:13So that's something that when people start to
- 7:16pray it as it was given to us
- 7:18to pray, that their spiritual life starts to
- 7:20take a different stride.
- 7:23And so St. Therese of the Child Jesus
- 7:26and of the Holy Face, when she was
- 7:29given...
- 7:30I mean, she signed up in this arch
- 7:33confraternity two years before this book was printed.
- 7:37And a lot of the prayers that are
- 7:39in here, you can see when she wrote
- 7:41her prayers, they're pretty much coming from here.
- 7:45And when she was told by her blood
- 7:47sister, who was also her superior, Mother Agnes,
- 7:50she basically said, Therese, you've been devoted to
- 7:53the Child Jesus.
- 7:55Now you need to mature your devotion to
- 7:58the suffering face of Jesus.
- 8:00And she said, Therese, you have it within
- 8:02you, and I want you under obedience to
- 8:04read the autobiography of Sister Marietta St. Pierre.
- 8:08So who's that?
- 8:11Sister Marietta St. Pierre was a Carmelite in
- 8:14the 1840s who received this devotion.
- 8:17And she was told to write her life
- 8:19story under obedience.
- 8:21And when she passed away, her autobiography was
- 8:24sent around the Carmels in France.
- 8:27And so that's how they had a copy
- 8:29of that biography.
- 8:31And when Therese got devoted to the Holy
- 8:34Face, she made giant steps to the interior
- 8:36life.
- 8:36And so that's a secret.
- 8:39Scholars are debating who's the most popular saint
- 8:41of all time, and they're putting Therese up
- 8:43there in the top ten.
- 8:44She may be number one.
- 8:46So this is a very powerful thing that
- 8:50we found, and you guys are here to
- 8:52help me reveal it to the audience at
- 8:55large.
- 8:56I'm quiet because I'm humbled.
- 8:58I don't really know.
- 9:01I'm speechless that I've been given this gift
- 9:05of you being in my life and God
- 9:11allowing me for my life to slow down
- 9:14enough to try to understand this.
- 9:17One of the things that I continuously am
- 9:21amazed of in my Catholic faith is the
- 9:24depth at which I am pulled up.
- 9:28When I get to a point of understanding,
- 9:31there's so much more to know.
- 9:36And it's scary isn't the word, overwhelming.
- 9:41We just talked here a few minutes ago
- 9:43when I realized I was being asked to
- 9:46sprint to an unknown finish line as a
- 9:48former basketball player that kept it back.
- 9:52Like, I keep it back.
- 9:54I'm not giving you everything because I don't
- 9:56know when I'm going to need that last
- 9:57bit.
- 9:59It's terrifying to sprint to an unknown finish
- 10:03line, but yet knowing, hoping that I'm going
- 10:08to be given more energy to complete the
- 10:11task.
- 10:15I played basketball, won championships, know what winning
- 10:19takes, and this is the, it's not a
- 10:24game, my faith isn't a game, but there's
- 10:28things I need to do.
- 10:29And a lot of men think, well, I
- 10:32want to go out and blaze a glory
- 10:34and be a martyr.
- 10:36And I've told Marco, I said, so many
- 10:38things have to happen in order for God
- 10:40to bless a man with that death, that
- 10:42there's training.
- 10:44You just don't get to say, okay, go
- 10:46on, the lions are going to eat you
- 10:47now.
- 10:48There's so many things that have to happen
- 10:50to my heart and soul prior to that
- 10:53occurring.
- 10:54And it's just slowly impressed upon me by
- 10:58my relationships that I'm introduced to in my
- 11:00life.
- 11:01Sorry for the long-windedness.
- 11:03Well, I'm sure we'll have more questions, but
- 11:05another thing I want to say is, like
- 11:07you mentioned St. Therese's prayers, taking on the
- 11:15Archdiocese of the Holy Face, speaking in that
- 11:18kind of language.
- 11:19One thing I would say about the devotion
- 11:21is when you practice the devotion to the
- 11:23Holy Face, it becomes that you see the
- 11:27Holy Face everywhere and you put your mind
- 11:30and your heart in the place of the
- 11:32senses of Jesus in the Scripture readings and
- 11:36just when you pray the rosary, you think
- 11:39of it, it's just so much, as you
- 11:41said, devotion makes your heart more tender.
- 11:43It really does make you so much more
- 11:46intimate.
- 11:46It makes your relationship with Jesus more intimate.
- 11:49That's my experience because of the sensual nature
- 11:52of the Holy Face devotion.
- 11:55The tender-heartedness, it's hard for me.
- 11:58I was bullied as a kid.
- 11:59I had a soft heart, and I developed
- 12:06a hard heart because I had to from
- 12:09a psychological standpoint.
- 12:11So it's kind of anathema to me to
- 12:13feel a tenderness or allow myself to be
- 12:17vulnerable like this.
- 12:20Yeah, and so that's what devotion is for.
- 12:23It's for us to overcome our childhood fears
- 12:28and to grow from them.
- 12:30One of the things about devotion to the
- 12:32Holy Face of Jesus is it focuses on
- 12:35all the pains and sufferings of Jesus.
- 12:38Like there's a Mass of the Five Wounds,
- 12:40and so we're all wounded, and so this
- 12:42Mass of the Five Wounds teaches us that
- 12:46our wounds can become our strengths.
- 12:48And that's why Thomas was asked to touch
- 12:51the side of Jesus, and that strengthened Thomas.
- 12:54And so that's the thing is when God
- 12:56allows us to be wounded, that those wounds
- 12:58are transformed into strengths like Jesus.
- 13:01And speaking of devotion, going back to St.
- 13:04Therese, why is she so popular?
- 13:07I think it's because of her devotion to
- 13:09the Holy Face, to suffering Jesus.
- 13:12And when she would pray the Psalms, she
- 13:15said it's as if every page, the Holy
- 13:18Face of God would jump out at me
- 13:19and remind her of devotion to the face
- 13:21of God.
- 13:23So I thought that was neat.
- 13:27That was kind of interesting.
- 13:27I was preparing for this, and I have
- 13:29a 33-day consecration to merciful love.
- 13:33I was flipping through there, and one of
- 13:35the pages has a picture of St. Therese
- 13:37with the image of the Holy Face.
- 13:40And I was like, wow, that's awesome.
