- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So what if I told you that reconciliation
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: isn't an impossible dream.
- 0:09We all know that sometimes it feels like an impossible dream,
- 0:13but it is not an impossible dream.
- 0:17It is a way that we as followers of Christ can walk with others
- 0:25in the world.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: It is a way that begins at a table.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Our Church of the Brethren family story
- 0:35an honest one the the brethren stream has known fracture and
- 0:42pain and difficulty
- 0:45from its very beginning 36 schisms or church splits or break
- 0:57tell the story
- 0:59how we together have tried to stay faithful to walking with
- 1:05Jesus Christ and with
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: each other and the world.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: There's a guy named Conrad Basil.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: He was a very, very early Brethren church leader.
- 1:18in Pennsylvania,
- 1:19right at the beginning of the Church of the Brethren history.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And he made what at that time was a bold turn.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: He prized spirit-breathed revelation
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Over the scripture.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: My goodness, what was he doing?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: And out of that was birthed what's now called the Ephrata cloister.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: It rose up.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: But at the same time, a wound in the brethren church opened up.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: But even though there was this frustration and schism and division,
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: beauty surfaced out of that whole experience.
- 2:10Music and art found voice among the sisters and brothers at the
- 2:16Ephrata church.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And we have some wonderful things that came out of that experience.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: God kept working in imperfect people on both sides of the situation.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: The net, friends, did not break.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And disputes kept coming in the church of the brethren.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: The mode of foot washing,
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: which we will experience today,
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: dress,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: and very,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: very dangerous innovations like Sunday school were being discussed.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Many things right now that we embrace, right, once split the church.
- 3:08In 1869,
- 3:08the brethren were wrestling with all of this as they grew and
- 3:15expanded.
- 3:17And there was this group of folks that were really pleading,
- 3:21begging,
- 3:22praying for uniformity.
- 3:25Not necessarily unity,
- 3:28although I think that's what they were thinking they were
- 3:30doing.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: But they were really pleading for uniformity.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: They feared that the church was drifting, was drifting.
- 3:38changing it was it was becoming worldly right so the church
- 3:44wrestled they talked
- 3:47and they prayed sometimes they split but they always grew
- 3:55through the experience
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: our question today here in this place is both simple and very very hard
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: If Christ reconciles the world to God,
- 4:15then what are we as Christ's followers called to do now as
- 4:24co-laborers with
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Christ's reconciliation to God and the world?
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: There's a statement,
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: each year we meet is annual conference,
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: and there's always queries,
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: and there's always statements.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And in 1979,
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: they came out with this statement that speaks gently,
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: but also firmly,
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: and I think profoundly for us.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: It says, unity is a gift, not an achievement.
- 5:02Christ at the center makes,
- 5:05and I love this,
- 5:07disagreements bearable,
- 5:10right?
- 5:14I think sometimes the most we can hope for is that our
- 5:18disagreements are kind and gentle and
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: bearable as we work towards reconciliation with one another.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: So, we begin there, right?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Recentering ourselves on Jesus,
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: on Christ,
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: not on tribes,
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: and not my view,
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: not my when,
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: not my way,
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: but Christ's way.
- 5:51Now,
- 5:51Millard,
- 5:52you mentioned you wanted to hear a little bit about Paul and
- 5:55Barnabas.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, come on, a little chuckle.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: That's kind of fun, right?
- 6:04I won't work nearly as hard next time if you don't laugh like
- 6:07straight off the bat.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: The Scripture says they had no small dispute.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: It means they were fighting folks.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: They were really upset with one another.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: They disagreed so much that they parted ways.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: But,
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: it's important as we look at the text,
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: they also blessed,
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: and the church blessed,
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: the unified mission that both were on.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: In Corinth, they loved leaders over and above the Lord.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: So Paul asks, what is a rhetorical question?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Of course we know the answer to this.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Has Christ been divided?
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: The answer is...
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Millard.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Millard knows the answer.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: No.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Jesus gave us a path to address conflict, right, in Matthew 18.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: To go first, to go gently, to go together.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Win back the sibling, not the argument.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: And in Romans 14,
- 7:23it opens even a wider gate that oftentimes I think that we get
- 7:27uncomfortable with.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: But it opens up this wide gate to welcome differences.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Differences of conscience without contempt.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: To choose intentionally what builds up and not what tears down.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: So, what are we called to do practically today?
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Well, I think there's seven things, one for each day, if you will.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: First,
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: a covenant of conversation,
- 8:05a covenant of conversation in our homes and in our committees
- 8:11to commit to no
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: gossip,
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: to no triangulation,
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: to quick repair,
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: to seek first to understand the other side.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: before we do anything else.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Second, to have a commitment to spacious conscience.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Spacious conscience.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: To hold convictions,
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: yes,
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: that's a good thing,
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: but we must hold them with humility,
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: recognizing that things do change,
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: even our perspective,
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: sometimes as life happens.
- 8:53To make room at the table,
- 8:56as the Scripture says,
- 8:57for both the weak and the strong.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Two,
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: third,
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: like what Matthew 18 says,
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: a Matthew 18 rhythm of life,
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: to go directly,
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: and then add wise counsel,
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: and then involve the church if necessary,
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: but always,
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: always doing so to seek restoration over removal.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Fourth, to practice lowliness, and
- 9:31really really important here and it's something that we are
- 9:34going to practice
- 9:35through the symbol of foot washing today foot washing I believe
- 9:41I believe is really
- 9:42you know nobody's gonna make you wash feet today okay so if
- 9:45you're worried about
- 9:46that you can still go and and have the treats at the table and
- 9:51talk to people and
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: we'll have other options for you but I really do want to encourage you
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: to prayerfully consider washing feet.
- 10:02Because foot washing trains our hearts to go low in service and
- 10:12in humility to one another.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: And the towels soften our words before we speak.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Fifth, shared discernment in Scripture.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: A big thing for us as the Church of the Brethren,
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: shared discernment as we go to interpret Scripture.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: We read with Jesus Christ at the center.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: We let love shape how truth is carried among us
- 10:54and out in the world sixths on saturday blessings across
- 11:02differences when when
- 11:04paths diverge and and they do diverge refuse contempt and
- 11:11criticism speak peace
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: into those situations pray good
- 11:19in those situations and always always always leave the door
- 11:26open and seven repair
- 11:31as public witness I think all of us know this probably no
- 11:38reason to say this other
- 11:40than to remind you but our valley our world needs reconcilers
- 11:46at work at schools
- 11:50communities everywhere that we live our lives and we need to
- 11:56let our apologies be
- 11:59fast and our amends be real so here's a simple rule of life
- 12:08first listen then love
- 12:12then speak and the only time you get to reverse that is when
- 12:17you want to bless
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: So try this this week.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Name one tension that you carry and then schedule one brave,
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: kind conversation and bring it to the basin today.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Let the water cool your defensiveness.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Let the bread steady your courage.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Remember, unity is given, not forced.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: We don't create the body, but we do receive it.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Christ is not divided, and neither are we.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: And if we fail, and we will, right?
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: We know that's what's going to happen.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Always fail forward.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: into mercy.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: We return to the table that returns us to each other today.
- 13:31Imagine the church our children would inherit if we did just
- 13:36these things.
- 13:40They would inherit a church where disagreement is experienced
- 13:43without disdain.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: They would experience truth without getting trampled on.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: And they would experience holiness without hurry.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Imagine our neighbor's surprise.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Those brethren disagree, but they won't let go of each other.
- 14:10We yell and scream at each other,
- 14:12and then we go have coffee or a potluck and eat dessert.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: What's up with that?
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: That is gospel with skin on it.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: That's what's up with that.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: That's the net not breaking.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: So church, here is our call today.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Center on Christ.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Practice lowliness.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Guard the bond of peace with fierce gentleness.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: We will speak the truth in love.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: We'll hold on to Christ highly and hold on to one another desperately.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: We will let the Spirit make unity visible.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: So as we move now to love feast,
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: let the towel be your teacher and let the table be your testimony.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Amen.
