- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wire to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number two
- 0:19Speaker 1: hundred and eighty five. In today's show, I'm joined by
- 0:23Speaker 1: professional big wave surfer Shane Dorian to discuss how discipline,
- 0:27Speaker 1: self awareness, and training for worst case scenarios has made
- 0:30Speaker 1: him one of the best surfers in the world and
- 0:33Speaker 1: a better bow hunter. All right, welcome to the Wire
- 0:41Speaker 1: to Hunt podcast, brought to you by on X, and
- 0:44Speaker 1: today we're continuing with our Peak Performers series in which
- 0:48Speaker 1: we're interviewing people at the top of their fields, whether
- 0:51Speaker 1: that be professional athletes, or businessmen, or authors, whatever it
- 0:54Speaker 1: might be. And we're chatting with these people to learn
- 0:57Speaker 1: about what skills and routines and habits and practices have
- 1:01Speaker 1: helped them achieve excellence and their professions, and then how
- 1:04Speaker 1: we can apply those same lessons to our pursuit to
- 1:07Speaker 1: become better hunters. So our guest today is a perfect
- 1:11Speaker 1: example of this, as Shane Dorian has risen to the
- 1:14Speaker 1: top of the surfing world over the past two decades.
- 1:16Speaker 1: He's had, you know, a number of top ten finishes
- 1:19Speaker 1: on the World Championship Tour. He has won numerous awards,
- 1:22Speaker 1: including Right of the Year in two thousand, eleven, fifteen,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and sixteen, and he was most recently featured in an
- 1:28Speaker 1: HBO documentary called The Momentum Generation. And all these accomplishments
- 1:33Speaker 1: have taken just a monumental amount of determination and hard
- 1:37Speaker 1: work and training and learning along the way, and those
- 1:40Speaker 1: same things have helped him become a better bow hunter too,
- 1:44Speaker 1: because he's also now really passionate about hunting. And so
- 1:48Speaker 1: that's where the majority of our conversation is spent today,
- 1:51Speaker 1: you know, digging into how Shane achieved excellence in this
- 1:54Speaker 1: profession as a surfer, and then how all that has
- 1:57Speaker 1: translated to him developing his passion as a bow hunter.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So we discussed the importance of discipline in his life
- 2:02Speaker 1: and how he's foster that. We talked about training for
- 2:05Speaker 1: high intensity moments like paddling into a big wave or
- 2:08Speaker 1: drawing back on a big buck. We talked about the
- 2:10Speaker 1: importance of forcing yourself out of your comfort zone. We
- 2:13Speaker 1: even getting this some quick tips about just healthier living
- 2:16Speaker 1: that can help you perform better in the field, and
- 2:18Speaker 1: all in all, it was just a fascinating conversation. Shane
- 2:21Speaker 1: was a good dude, and I know that there are
- 2:23Speaker 1: gonna be things that you can take from this that
- 2:24Speaker 1: will absolutely help you make positive progress towards your hunting
- 2:28Speaker 1: goals this coming season, which I know is top of
- 2:31Speaker 1: mind for all of us right now. So with all
- 2:33Speaker 1: that said, I want to get right to that conversation,
- 2:35Speaker 1: but first let's take a quick break to thank one
- 2:37Speaker 1: of our partners, and then we'll get to chatting with
- 2:40Speaker 1: Shane Dorian. All right, I'm now here on the line
- 2:45Speaker 1: with Shane Dorian. Thanks for doing the Shan Yeah. Absolutely.
- 2:51Speaker 1: My my buddy Ben O'Brien, when my colleagues over here,
- 2:55Speaker 1: meat Eater has told me a couple of times that
- 2:57Speaker 1: the year someone I need to talk to. I know
- 3:00Speaker 1: you guys have shared a hunt in camp or two together,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and as I understand it right, you're you're obviously professional
- 3:07Speaker 1: big wave surfer. I know you bow hunt. I know
- 3:10Speaker 1: you've done a lot in Hawaii. There's all sorts of
- 3:12Speaker 1: animals out there. I know you've traveled to the Western
- 3:15Speaker 1: United States to Colorado in plays like that chasing elk
- 3:17Speaker 1: and whatnot. Um, but what's really interesting to me is
- 3:21Speaker 1: that you just went on your first white tail hunt
- 3:24Speaker 1: this past year. I gatti believe that's pretty different than
- 3:28Speaker 1: some of the other things you've been doing. So what
- 3:29Speaker 1: did you what did you think about that? Yeah, first
- 3:33Speaker 1: of all, yeah, I'm really good friends with Ben O'Brien.
- 3:36Speaker 1: He's a he's a legend. I love that guy. Um,
- 3:39Speaker 1: And yeah, just it was one of those things where
- 3:41Speaker 1: I always wanted to try white tail hunting, but because
- 3:44Speaker 1: I am a surfer, the you know, the prime time
- 3:46Speaker 1: for surfing is in the wintertime, so you know, like
- 3:49Speaker 1: November and December it is you know, it's really ran,
- 3:51Speaker 1: like my season gets really serious. So that's why it
- 3:54Speaker 1: took me so long to you know, to try and
- 3:56Speaker 1: get out to the Midwest to hunt white tails, just
- 3:58Speaker 1: because it's really difficult time of the year for me.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But last year, UM, I got the call from a
- 4:04Speaker 1: guy named Sloane Brown and you know, he just said,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you know, we got this white tail hunt coming up,
- 4:09Speaker 1: you want to come out and do it? And um,
- 4:11Speaker 1: so I jumped in the chance. I jumped on a
- 4:13Speaker 1: plane and got out there. And now that was my
- 4:15Speaker 1: first time in the Midwest, first time to Ohio and
- 4:18Speaker 1: first time hunting white tails. And you're you're hunting with
- 4:21Speaker 1: my buddy Downie Wilson, right. I saw he had some
- 4:23Speaker 1: pictures of you out there. That's right. Yeah, yeah, Donny,
- 4:27Speaker 1: he's the man out there in Ohio. He's he's killed
- 4:29Speaker 1: some big bucks of his bow, and you know, he
- 4:31Speaker 1: knows the animals really good. I didn't really have any
- 4:34Speaker 1: idea really what I was doing out there. I was just,
- 4:37Speaker 1: you know, wanted to learn as much as I could,
- 4:38Speaker 1: but you know, just such a different environment to what
- 4:41Speaker 1: I used to I'm not very patient. I'm not a
- 4:45Speaker 1: super patient hunter. Um. I really loved the spot and stock.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I love to be on the ground with game, and
- 4:51Speaker 1: I like to kind of like move around a lot.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I always feel like whenever I'm sitting in a certain
- 4:55Speaker 1: place that there's there's there everywhere except where I am,
- 4:59Speaker 1: you know, dress you know, like when you're when you're
- 5:02Speaker 1: it's it's a little bit hard for me to be
- 5:04Speaker 1: confined to a tree stand. So I knew that was
- 5:06Speaker 1: like a kind of like a personal challenge I needed
- 5:08Speaker 1: to try and try and uh, you know, see if
- 5:11Speaker 1: I had a kata, what it took for that. So
- 5:14Speaker 1: what was the verdict? And once you you did it
- 5:16Speaker 1: for a while, did you did it? Did it come
- 5:18Speaker 1: to be something you enjoyed or was it a struggle? Yeah? No,
- 5:21Speaker 1: it was awesome. Um. You know, I love I love hunting,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and I love I'm not the type of hunter that
- 5:29Speaker 1: has like a big list of different animals I need
- 5:31Speaker 1: to kill and not like I need to get my
- 5:33Speaker 1: own goat and then I need IEX and then I
- 5:35Speaker 1: need a ow Dad, and then I need a zebra,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and then I need a kudu and then I need
- 5:38Speaker 1: to know. I'm not that. I just really love to
- 5:41Speaker 1: hunt different places with different people, um, and just to
- 5:44Speaker 1: see different terrain and hunting methods and and need local
- 5:48Speaker 1: hunters who hunt different species and and it was fun
- 5:51Speaker 1: to hang out with Donnie and and do the white
- 5:53Speaker 1: tailed thing and and being like really cold temperatures and
- 5:56Speaker 1: sit in a tree stand and try and keep warm
- 5:58Speaker 1: and try and not go stir crazy and be patient
- 6:01Speaker 1: and it was really fun. Man. It was super challenging.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Um it was. It was you know, just having like
- 6:07Speaker 1: the extra clothing and you know, trying to keep warm
- 6:09Speaker 1: and then trying to get the full draw um, and
- 6:12Speaker 1: then trying to sit still and there was there's a
- 6:15Speaker 1: lot of challenges, but it was it was a blast.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I loved it. You know. The White Hill Woods Ohio
- 6:20Speaker 1: were absolutely stunning and beautiful. And um, I was lucky
- 6:23Speaker 1: enough to have a do come in. On my second
- 6:27Speaker 1: morning there, there was a really big buck that Donnie
- 6:29Speaker 1: was after. Um. You know, for a few weeks he
- 6:32Speaker 1: had him on game camera but only at night, and
- 6:34Speaker 1: so he really wanted me to try and kill that
- 6:36Speaker 1: book and buck just ended up being super nocturnal and um,
- 6:40Speaker 1: So the second morning I was there, I only had
- 6:43Speaker 1: a few days to hunt. My time was really limited.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So on my second morning, Donnie was sitting in the
- 6:47Speaker 1: tree next to me and and this doll came into
- 6:50Speaker 1: a scrape and and a kind of buck was following her.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And I looked at Donnie and he said, go for it.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And so as soon as that buck stopped, I was
- 6:57Speaker 1: already a full draw and UM let him out. That's awesome, now,
- 7:02Speaker 1: was it that that feeling like that that peak of
- 7:06Speaker 1: of excitement adrenaline in that moment when the buck shows
- 7:10Speaker 1: up and you get that shot. I've always kind of
- 7:13Speaker 1: I always struggle to to understand the difference between that
- 7:18Speaker 1: moment versus like if you're out on a western hunt
- 7:21Speaker 1: and you're chasing an elk and you're running up and
- 7:23Speaker 1: down mountains and then you get the shot, because like
- 7:25Speaker 1: in that moment when you're hunting elk, it's like this
- 7:27Speaker 1: adrenaline rush for an hour or two right you're you're
- 7:30Speaker 1: running up a mountain, you you finally catch up to
- 7:32Speaker 1: the elk. It's been like high intensity for a very
- 7:34Speaker 1: extended period of time. So there's something about that that's incredible.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But then at the same time, it's like the polar
- 7:40Speaker 1: opposite when your white tail hut because it's very low
- 7:42Speaker 1: intensity for hours and hours and hours. So you're you're
- 7:45Speaker 1: kind of sitting and waiting and observing and watching and thinking,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and you're you're working at this very low wave length,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, then you spike way high
- 7:53Speaker 1: when that buck shows up and you go from zero
- 7:55Speaker 1: to sixty and two seconds, and so that's a huge
- 7:58Speaker 1: rush in a different kind of way. Did that feel
- 8:00Speaker 1: different to you too, or what was that like compared
- 8:03Speaker 1: to your past hunting experiences? For sure, I mean it's um,
- 8:07Speaker 1: you know what, when whenever you're you know, whenever you're
- 8:10Speaker 1: just um, you know, just kind of hoping that some
- 8:13Speaker 1: some somebody's gonna show up, and it just seems like
- 8:16Speaker 1: the time goes so slow, and it seems like in
- 8:18Speaker 1: the evening time when it's when it's going to get dark,
- 8:20Speaker 1: that you know, the dark comes pretty quickly, and and
- 8:23Speaker 1: you're really worried that there you know that there's there's
- 8:25Speaker 1: not a year that's going to show up before dark,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and there's just a million things going through your brain,
- 8:29Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, the moments there right in
- 8:31Speaker 1: front of you, and and so you know that that
- 8:34Speaker 1: that particular hunt was was a situation where I didn't
- 8:38Speaker 1: really have time to get nervous. It was like the
- 8:40Speaker 1: buck was walking in super fast. He was gonna stop,
- 8:43Speaker 1: or he was gonna I was hoping he was gonna stop.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I got the full draw, and I knew it was
- 8:47Speaker 1: only a matter of seconds, and I didn't really have
- 8:48Speaker 1: time to get As soon as you stopped, I just
- 8:51Speaker 1: settled my pin. I was using a back tension release,
- 8:53Speaker 1: and I just started squeezing on that and and I
- 8:56Speaker 1: just started uh pulling on that, and you know, he
- 8:59Speaker 1: luck that he stayed still for enough time and Um,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I let him have it, but it was Yeah, It's
- 9:04Speaker 1: it's so different because you know, the moment, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 1: like the moment of truth when your archery hunting is
- 9:10Speaker 1: is is pretty similar. I think species of species is
- 9:13Speaker 1: just all the moments leading up to that moment that
- 9:16Speaker 1: are different. Like with you know, if you or or
- 9:18Speaker 1: like with Neil deer, if you see a deer like
- 9:21Speaker 1: feeding in the morning and you wait from the bed,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and then you wait for the wind to stabilize and
- 9:25Speaker 1: you plan your stock, and then you you spend two
- 9:28Speaker 1: or three hours talking in and getting into thirty yards,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and then you're waiting another four hours for the thing
- 9:33Speaker 1: to stand up. There's so much time, um, and so
- 9:36Speaker 1: much mental fatigue trying to stay focused. And if you're
- 9:39Speaker 1: on your knees and and you're and you're trying to
- 9:42Speaker 1: to like withstand the pain and not move around. You know,
- 9:45Speaker 1: there's so much time to think about that upcoming moment.
- 9:48Speaker 1: But in white tail hunting, it seems like the upcoming
- 9:50Speaker 1: moment just happens. Yeah, you can all change in a second,
- 9:54Speaker 1: can come out of nowhere, that's for sure. Yeah, And
- 9:58Speaker 1: I think I just got pretty lucky, you know, Buck
- 10:00Speaker 1: came in at the right time. Um, he didn't look
- 10:03Speaker 1: up when I got to full draw or when I
- 10:05Speaker 1: was getting to full draw. Um, you know, the do
- 10:08Speaker 1: didn't spook. I just things just kind of fell into place,
- 10:11Speaker 1: and um, I end up making a great shot, so
- 10:13Speaker 1: I was really happy. He actually he didn't even take
- 10:17Speaker 1: a step, he just dropped in his track, so that
- 10:20Speaker 1: I was really so yeah. I just switched to a
- 10:23Speaker 1: back tension release myself this year, so I'm still kind
- 10:26Speaker 1: of getting used to it in training with it. However,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you like that, oh man, I love it. It's um
- 10:31Speaker 1: For for me, it was in the seconty I was
- 10:33Speaker 1: I was battling some pretty bad um Sarto panic, which
- 10:37Speaker 1: I'm sure a lot of your listeners can can relate to,
- 10:39Speaker 1: and I was just having a difficult time with with
- 10:42Speaker 1: trigger releases. I was starting to get to the point
- 10:45Speaker 1: where it was really difficult for me to relax during
- 10:48Speaker 1: the shot process on on our an animal, and I
- 10:50Speaker 1: was starting to make really inconsistent shots and having the
- 10:54Speaker 1: you know, the point of impact pretty pretty far away
- 10:57Speaker 1: from where I really wanted to And I would get
- 10:59Speaker 1: to the point where I put my pain on that
- 11:01Speaker 1: animal and I couldn't relax, and as soon as my
- 11:04Speaker 1: pain got in the kill zone, I was a tounch
- 11:05Speaker 1: of trigger and um, I was just truly trying to
- 11:09Speaker 1: get frustrated. So I ended up um bogging to John
- 11:12Speaker 1: Dudley and getting one of those silver backs and put
- 11:15Speaker 1: the sight off my bow and did blank bail shooting
- 11:17Speaker 1: and closed my eyes and shot like that for a
- 11:20Speaker 1: month and then and then just shot blank build for
- 11:23Speaker 1: a month. And then I didn't shoot at any like
- 11:25Speaker 1: sort of target for another month, and then I put
- 11:27Speaker 1: my sight back on and just worked my way back
- 11:29Speaker 1: into into like normal like target archery, and then and then, Yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 1: it's been a game changer for me. My, my, my, my,
- 11:37Speaker 1: My ratio of animals. Um. You know that I that
- 11:40Speaker 1: I've killed has gone way up. Um, the not animals
- 11:45Speaker 1: that I've lost has gone way down, and and and
- 11:48Speaker 1: the point of impact from where I'm aiming has gotten
- 11:51Speaker 1: much more in accurate. So I'm very, very stoked with
- 11:54Speaker 1: the results. And I feel like I'm a much better
- 11:56Speaker 1: hunter with the back tension leaves. That's great. Yeah, that's
- 11:59Speaker 1: that sounds really similar to my story. I kind of
- 12:02Speaker 1: had was having the same issues and decided to do
- 12:04Speaker 1: the same thing you've done kind of started back from
- 12:07Speaker 1: the ground and got one of those silverbacks too. So
- 12:10Speaker 1: that's that's where I'm at, and it's good to hear
- 12:11Speaker 1: you've had you've had positive results. I'm hoping to have
- 12:14Speaker 1: similar stories as fall. So, so you you have done
- 12:20Speaker 1: something which which we've been talking to a whole bunch
- 12:23Speaker 1: of different people about, which is you've kind of reached
- 12:26Speaker 1: the top of your game in your professional life as
- 12:29Speaker 1: as a surfer, competitive surfer and our big wave surfer.
- 12:33Speaker 1: You're right there at the peak of the mountain. Um.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And so what we've been trying to do over recent
- 12:37Speaker 1: weeks is is talked to different people like this who
- 12:40Speaker 1: are I don't know, like a really generic way of
- 12:42Speaker 1: saying is like a high achiever, peak performer or something,
- 12:45Speaker 1: someone who's who's really found a way to achieve excellence
- 12:47Speaker 1: is something. And then we're like kind of breaking down,
- 12:49Speaker 1: like what are the different pieces of that puzzle that
- 12:52Speaker 1: have made that person as successful as they are, And
- 12:55Speaker 1: then is there something we can learn about that we
- 12:57Speaker 1: can apply to our passion of hunting? Uh Um. So
- 13:00Speaker 1: you've you've obviously found a way to do that in
- 13:02Speaker 1: the surfing world and it sure seems like you're doing
- 13:04Speaker 1: that now in the hunting world too. Um obviously have
- 13:08Speaker 1: passion for both of those things, but I'm kind of
- 13:09Speaker 1: curious at the top, like, did you fall for hunting
- 13:13Speaker 1: and fall in love with bow hunting because of how
- 13:16Speaker 1: similar it is to something about surfing, maybe the work
- 13:19Speaker 1: that it takes or the training it takes, or the
- 13:21Speaker 1: intensity of it, Or is it because of how different
- 13:23Speaker 1: it is from surfing? What's that relationship for you? You know,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I think it's a little bit of both. I think
- 13:31Speaker 1: I've never I've never fallen in love with any other
- 13:34Speaker 1: thing betided surfing in my whole life. And you know,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I started surfing when I was five, and I fell
- 13:39Speaker 1: a head over heels for it and became obsessed with it.
- 13:42Speaker 1: And that's all I cared about. It's all I thought about.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I've gotten the way of everything I ever did with
- 13:46Speaker 1: girls and and everything, you know, that's all I wanted
- 13:49Speaker 1: to do with surfing. Cool, you know, It's all I
- 13:51Speaker 1: thought about in school and and so I just became
- 13:55Speaker 1: obsessed with it, and that's all I did, And that's
- 13:57Speaker 1: all I really knew how to do for for decades
- 13:59Speaker 1: and decade and that's why I became really good at it.
- 14:02Speaker 1: And and then um, you know I I, yeah, I've
- 14:05Speaker 1: reached high level and surfing and it's become my profession
- 14:08Speaker 1: and it's what all I've done for thirty years. Um.
- 14:11Speaker 1: And then I found bow hunting pretty late. And when
- 14:14Speaker 1: I was thirty years old, I started b hunting, and
- 14:18Speaker 1: as the same situation for me, I I you know,
- 14:21Speaker 1: I didn't really have anything besides surfing that I really loved,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and I saw bo hunting and I instantly fell for it.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I just loved it. It was so similar to surfing
- 14:29Speaker 1: in a lot of ways, Like, um, you know, the
- 14:32Speaker 1: real reasons I've felt in love with surfing was because
- 14:35Speaker 1: it was an escape. It was an escape from school.
- 14:37Speaker 1: It was escape from you know, the classroom in school
- 14:40Speaker 1: and my teachers and everyone who would tell me what
- 14:42Speaker 1: to do. The escape from my parents and the situation
- 14:46Speaker 1: at home I was in, and the issues and all
- 14:49Speaker 1: the stress in my life and all this stuff as
- 14:51Speaker 1: a child, which weren't even a stressful, but I thought
- 14:54Speaker 1: they were. You know, when you're a kid, you think
- 14:55Speaker 1: everything is radical. But you know, that was the ocean
- 14:58Speaker 1: with my escape. The ocean was like my thing that
- 15:02Speaker 1: um just set me straight and kept my head on straight.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And and then with surfing in the same way, you know,
- 15:07Speaker 1: And you know now there's now as an adult, like
- 15:11Speaker 1: you know, our day or day lives is gonna be
- 15:13Speaker 1: pretty stressful. And and to have just even not even hunting,
- 15:17Speaker 1: just archery, just just at the end of the day
- 15:19Speaker 1: that just grab your bow and go out in the
- 15:22Speaker 1: yards of the deer and shoot the arrows to the target.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It's just it's so therapeutic, and it's so good good
- 15:27Speaker 1: for us, I think, and and for for me to
- 15:29Speaker 1: find that later in life and to really fall in
- 15:32Speaker 1: love with it and become super passionate about archery, and
- 15:35Speaker 1: archery hunting has just been such a blessing of my life.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I really love it. And I've met friends but I
- 15:40Speaker 1: never would have met in a million years had I
- 15:42Speaker 1: not started archery hunting. And a lot of the most
- 15:45Speaker 1: beautiful places I've ever been to in the world now
- 15:47Speaker 1: is only because I started hunting. So it's just really
- 15:51Speaker 1: neat to to find something totally different and become passionate
- 15:54Speaker 1: about it. And and that there's a lot of similarities
- 15:57Speaker 1: between um, archery, hunting, and surfing, and there's there's a
- 16:02Speaker 1: lot of differences as well. There's they're so different in
- 16:04Speaker 1: a lot of ways and very similar in some ways.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Do you think that anything from your surfing background has
- 16:11Speaker 1: helped you become, you know, a competent bow hunter. Is
- 16:14Speaker 1: there anything that jumps out right away? Is like, you
- 16:16Speaker 1: know that kind of helps instill this thing in me
- 16:19Speaker 1: that now you use as a hunter or anything like that,
- 16:22Speaker 1: for sure? Yeah, I mean, you know, being being a
- 16:25Speaker 1: professional big wave surfer, you know, it took me multiple
- 16:30Speaker 1: decades to to you know, get the skill to to
- 16:34Speaker 1: be a really high level of that. And and that's
- 16:37Speaker 1: the things you really need for for a big wave
- 16:40Speaker 1: of surfing is discipline and you know determination, you know,
- 16:45Speaker 1: really strong mental focus, being able to perform in key
- 16:49Speaker 1: moments that you can't predict. Um. You know, with with surfing,
- 16:52Speaker 1: you're you're dealing with mother nature. You're not. It's not
- 16:55Speaker 1: a basketball. Who've been a basketball and you throw the
- 16:57Speaker 1: basketball and goes into hoo, can you get your points?
- 17:00Speaker 1: Not like that. It's not like a basketball hoop. It
- 17:02Speaker 1: never moves and you know where it is all the time.
- 17:04Speaker 1: It's not like a skateboard wrap. It doesn't move and
- 17:06Speaker 1: you know where it is all the time. Surfing, it's like,
- 17:08Speaker 1: you know, for if you're a good way of surfer,
- 17:11Speaker 1: there might be only one truly epics swell per year,
- 17:15Speaker 1: and you have no idea when that swell is going
- 17:17Speaker 1: to hit, whether it's in December, whether it's on a
- 17:18Speaker 1: certain day. So you have to train all year long.
- 17:21Speaker 1: You have to be mentally and physically ready all year long,
- 17:23Speaker 1: year and year out. Um you know, because those key
- 17:26Speaker 1: moments of key swells are you know, the things that
- 17:29Speaker 1: define you as a surfer, and that's that's what that's what,
- 17:33Speaker 1: um you know, that's when it really truly counts. And
- 17:36Speaker 1: it's very similar in bow hunting. It's like, you know,
- 17:38Speaker 1: you can you can shoot a millionaireros a year and
- 17:41Speaker 1: just drill the heart on every single phone gear target
- 17:44Speaker 1: in the world, but if you can't recreate that in
- 17:46Speaker 1: the moment on a real life animal, then it doesn't matter. Um.
- 17:50Speaker 1: So I think that mental focus and knowing how to
- 17:53Speaker 1: how to step up when when you know and in
- 17:58Speaker 1: the moment of truth, I think that's definitely only I've
- 18:00Speaker 1: been able to bring that over from surfing. I'm not
- 18:03Speaker 1: saying I'm a deadly bow hunter or anything. Like that.
- 18:06Speaker 1: But it's it's definitely helped me a lot. So how
- 18:09Speaker 1: did you develop that ability? Maybe in surfing? Right? How
- 18:12Speaker 1: did you get to the point where you can get
- 18:15Speaker 1: that one chance a year maybe and you just you
- 18:18Speaker 1: you crush it? What have you been doing to get
- 18:20Speaker 1: to that point? I just think a lot of experience,
- 18:22Speaker 1: you know, just getting a lot of experience in the
- 18:25Speaker 1: ocean for sure, A lot a lot of big swells
- 18:28Speaker 1: under my belt, and a lot of slow progress with
- 18:32Speaker 1: baby steps just you know, year after year, um, decade
- 18:37Speaker 1: after decade. And but I think we all do that
- 18:40Speaker 1: in our lives in some certain capacity that we can
- 18:42Speaker 1: kind of draw, you know, when we're our tree hunting.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It's interesting with with um, with with our tree hunting,
- 18:49Speaker 1: It's like, I'm pretty lucky, you know, where where I live,
- 18:53Speaker 1: I can get a lot of experience. You know, if
- 18:55Speaker 1: you're if you live in Ohio or something like that,
- 18:59Speaker 1: it's our treat me. And you know when when when
- 19:01Speaker 1: it's over, you you know, you put your bow away
- 19:03Speaker 1: for a while and then you're like, hey, I'm I'm
- 19:06Speaker 1: six months out from our tree season. I'm gonna get
- 19:08Speaker 1: my bow backed up and maybe you get some new gear,
- 19:11Speaker 1: maybe by a by a new site for the next
- 19:13Speaker 1: white kill season. And then you're like, I'm four months
- 19:15Speaker 1: out came, Now I'm starting to shoot a lot. Now
- 19:17Speaker 1: I'm two months out came. Now I'm shooting a ton.
- 19:20Speaker 1: And then I'm one month out, I'm switching to broadhead.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And then it's like this big anticipation for this this
- 19:25Speaker 1: one deer you're gonna kill or maybe not kill. For me,
- 19:28Speaker 1: right now, I could hang up the phone, drop my bow,
- 19:31Speaker 1: jump in my truck, and drive three minutes and go hunting.
- 19:35Speaker 1: There's no season and there's no bag limit. I could
- 19:39Speaker 1: go outside my house literally walk ups on my house
- 19:41Speaker 1: and start hunting right now, and and you know, there's
- 19:45Speaker 1: wild boars all around my house and goats like a
- 19:48Speaker 1: fifteen minute walk from my house, and I can hunt
- 19:50Speaker 1: ram to the top of this mountain right here where
- 19:52Speaker 1: I live. And um, you can do that every single
- 19:54Speaker 1: day of the year. And there's no bag limits, no seasons.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And so for me, I'm pretty lucky as far as
- 19:59Speaker 1: I makes sperience goes. I was I was a really
- 20:02Speaker 1: I found hunting really late, but I feel like I've
- 20:05Speaker 1: put in enough days in the last you know, twelout
- 20:09Speaker 1: the fifteen years that is like a lifetime of hunting,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you know, hundred hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of days
- 20:14Speaker 1: um with with a lot of days coming home with
- 20:18Speaker 1: like no arrows left. Yeah, So that kind of makes
- 20:21Speaker 1: me think about this, this kind of thing that's happening.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I think to a lot of people these days that
- 20:26Speaker 1: are maybe just getting into hunting now, they see, you know,
- 20:29Speaker 1: all these TV shows and all these magazines and Instagram,
- 20:33Speaker 1: and they're seemed big deer, big elk or big whatever
- 20:36Speaker 1: all the time. So there's this kind of expectation that's
- 20:39Speaker 1: developed just by everything you've see in the media that
- 20:41Speaker 1: makes you think, oh, I got to hold out for
- 20:43Speaker 1: a big something, whatever it is. So then you get
- 20:45Speaker 1: these new hunters who then go the first year, two,
- 20:50Speaker 1: three or four or five years and they just they
- 20:51Speaker 1: don't want to shoot anything because they want it to
- 20:54Speaker 1: be this great, big buck, because that's what it seems
- 20:56Speaker 1: like they think they have to do if they want
- 20:58Speaker 1: to get a lot of likes on Instagram or just
- 21:00Speaker 1: their buddies. Don't give a hard time to people that
- 21:02Speaker 1: don't end up getting a lot of experience with that
- 21:04Speaker 1: final moment of truth because they're just waiting and passing
- 21:07Speaker 1: and passing and passing and doing kind of the opposite
- 21:10Speaker 1: what what you talked about doing, which is you know,
- 21:11Speaker 1: surfingly crazy all the time and getting that experience or
- 21:14Speaker 1: hunting as often as you can and actually going through
- 21:17Speaker 1: that whole thing. Do you think, like that scenario just
- 21:21Speaker 1: laid out, is that an issue in your mind? Like
- 21:24Speaker 1: is that holding people back? Do you think? Yeah? I mean,
- 21:27Speaker 1: you know, there's nothing wrong with big deer, big elk.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I mean, I mean I like those things just as
- 21:31Speaker 1: much as the next person. But it's it's on a
- 21:35Speaker 1: it's it's meaningless. It's just that's that's that's not really
- 21:39Speaker 1: why you hunt. Me hunt for I mean I hunt
- 21:42Speaker 1: for experiences like when, like when Ben came out and
- 21:44Speaker 1: visited me here in Hawaii. I had hunted with Ben
- 21:46Speaker 1: a couple of times and spend a lot of time
- 21:48Speaker 1: with him in the main line of stuff. And then
- 21:50Speaker 1: when he finally came out and visited me in Hawaii, Um,
- 21:53Speaker 1: you know, we spent a week chasing gear on the
- 21:56Speaker 1: nine and dude, we just get a million stock, shot
- 22:01Speaker 1: a million arrows, drank beers at night, talked a lot
- 22:04Speaker 1: of ship, had fun, had a great, great group of guys,
- 22:07Speaker 1: and that's what it was all about. We didn't remember
- 22:10Speaker 1: the big deer. I didn't remember any big bucks. That
- 22:12Speaker 1: that's not what I remember. I remember all the blown
- 22:15Speaker 1: stocks and all the misses and all the times that
- 22:18Speaker 1: screwed up, and those little moments when I've made the
- 22:21Speaker 1: shot count. And that's those experiences. Seed. If you're if
- 22:24Speaker 1: you're waiting for the biggest elk on the mountain, or
- 22:26Speaker 1: if you're waiting five years for one big white tail, Yeah,
- 22:29Speaker 1: it's gonna look good at your wall and you kill him,
- 22:31Speaker 1: but you're wasting your time. Man. It's it's all about
- 22:34Speaker 1: like the relationships and and the and the hunters we
- 22:38Speaker 1: make friends with and share camp with, and all those
- 22:40Speaker 1: moments with the animals. Man, Like, I just want to
- 22:42Speaker 1: get out there and hunt as much as I can
- 22:45Speaker 1: with great people and have amazing experiences. Honestly, Yeah, that
- 22:49Speaker 1: that it's easy to get caught up in all the
- 22:51Speaker 1: other stuff and forget the about those foundational aspects of
- 22:56Speaker 1: it that really are like you said, those are the
- 22:58Speaker 1: memory makers some time. Um. But then there is something
- 23:02Speaker 1: to be said that that those final moments, whether you
- 23:05Speaker 1: can close the deal or not. That often is what
- 23:08Speaker 1: defines you as a hunter in in some certain ways, right, Um,
- 23:12Speaker 1: at least yourself knowing what you're able to do, what
- 23:16Speaker 1: you would able to accomplish. I suppose, UM, do you
- 23:19Speaker 1: think that there's anything I gotta imagine, UM that when
- 23:24Speaker 1: you paddle into a big wave, it's like a very
- 23:28Speaker 1: high pressure, high intensity situation. UM. Dangerous situation probably too.
- 23:34Speaker 1: And rights hunters, we enter this high pressure situation when
- 23:37Speaker 1: we're about to draw back on a on a deer
- 23:39Speaker 1: and elk or something very different but similarly high pressure.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Like we were talking about everything all year leads up
- 23:45Speaker 1: to this one moment. Um. I heard you once talk
- 23:48Speaker 1: about the fact that in that moment for you, you're
- 23:51Speaker 1: not thinking about anything at all. There's no self talk,
- 23:54Speaker 1: there's no conscious thing. It's just like instinct taking over. Um.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Is that same for you when you're in the moment
- 24:01Speaker 1: of truth for a deer or an elk or whatever,
- 24:03Speaker 1: when you're drawing back, Like, do you have that same
- 24:06Speaker 1: you know, just instinctual action. Um. And part two of
- 24:11Speaker 1: that would be, how do you get to the point
- 24:13Speaker 1: where instinct is able to help you, you know, handle
- 24:17Speaker 1: those situations? Is it just the experience thing, or is
- 24:19Speaker 1: there any other like actual training or work or something
- 24:21Speaker 1: that helps you just not choke. I think it's just
- 24:24Speaker 1: experience with insurfing. Like if you if you put me
- 24:28Speaker 1: out in the ocean right now and it was the
- 24:29Speaker 1: biggest well of the year and I had to pole
- 24:32Speaker 1: it into the line if it gets a really big wave,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I wouldn't be thinking about really anything when I wave
- 24:37Speaker 1: approached and had a turnaround the paddle, I wouldn't be
- 24:39Speaker 1: thinking about anything. I just would be focused, and it
- 24:41Speaker 1: would all I would just like rely on my instincts
- 24:44Speaker 1: and my history and my experience. But when I'm bow
- 24:47Speaker 1: hunting in that situation presents itself and it's at that
- 24:50Speaker 1: moment of truth as the opposite as I definitely don't
- 24:54Speaker 1: go blank. If I go blank, I miss. And so
- 24:56Speaker 1: for me, it's a matter of like really focusing on
- 24:59Speaker 1: every single part of the process, each step as far
- 25:02Speaker 1: as like you know, when to get up on my knees,
- 25:05Speaker 1: when to draw, what's the animal doing? Is there a
- 25:07Speaker 1: lot of those looking Okay, they're all not looking at
- 25:09Speaker 1: me now at the time. Okay, now is the time
- 25:11Speaker 1: to draw? Okay, I got the full draw now is
- 25:13Speaker 1: my you know, my anchor, then my bubble, then my skin,
- 25:18Speaker 1: you know which painted it. Okay, get on the animal,
- 25:20Speaker 1: don't full thetray, your relaxed breathe starts focusing on that
- 25:24Speaker 1: pin and then pulled through the shot. And I have
- 25:27Speaker 1: to go through all those things or else I can't
- 25:29Speaker 1: make a great shot. Um. And I know that I
- 25:31Speaker 1: bought myself, and so I just rely on my shot
- 25:34Speaker 1: process and and I try to really focus on that
- 25:36Speaker 1: and breaking it down into pieces is the thing that
- 25:39Speaker 1: helps me make the shot at the moment of truth.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And I think the difference between surfing for me and
- 25:44Speaker 1: relying on my instincts and not really thinking about much
- 25:46Speaker 1: and in be hunting having a full on focus on
- 25:49Speaker 1: on the on the processes. It's just a matter of
- 25:52Speaker 1: you know, I didn't grow up bull hunting, UM. I
- 25:55Speaker 1: don't have decades of experience, and so for me, I
- 25:58Speaker 1: just really want to UM. I think I think a
- 26:00Speaker 1: guy like John Dudley UM or someone like that. And
- 26:04Speaker 1: I'm sure there's a lot of people out there like
- 26:06Speaker 1: that have been bow hunting since they were little kids.
- 26:08Speaker 1: They you know, they probably don't need to think of
- 26:10Speaker 1: anything when they are you know, uh, you know about
- 26:14Speaker 1: to make the shot. But I think archery hunting is
- 26:17Speaker 1: is a little bit different, so technical, one little tiny
- 26:21Speaker 1: thing and go wrong one one, one little element of
- 26:24Speaker 1: your of your process is not there, whether it's your
- 26:26Speaker 1: level or falling through or pulling through the shot for um,
- 26:31Speaker 1: you know, obviously focusing on the right pin. All those
- 26:34Speaker 1: things need to be perfect. Um. So I would think
- 26:37Speaker 1: a lot more of people would, even like really experienced
- 26:39Speaker 1: bow hunters that probably have to break it down and
- 26:41Speaker 1: do it the process. And I know, just from my
- 26:44Speaker 1: own personal experience having to do that very same thing
- 26:47Speaker 1: you talked about, like that takes a lot of um,
- 26:51Speaker 1: I mean, all the things we're talking about, It takes
- 26:53Speaker 1: a lot of work. Like you have to drill all
- 26:55Speaker 1: those things to really develop that process in that habit,
- 26:58Speaker 1: and knowing how to do all those things in the
- 27:01Speaker 1: high pressure situation takes a whole lot of work over
- 27:03Speaker 1: them proceeding weeks and months and years. Um. How do
- 27:07Speaker 1: you fit that kind of preparation into your life? Because
- 27:11Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of us know are we
- 27:13Speaker 1: should be practicate with our bows? A lot a lot
- 27:14Speaker 1: of us know we should be out there, you know,
- 27:17Speaker 1: exercising or whatever to stay in good shape for our hunts.
- 27:19Speaker 1: A lot of us know we should be doing a
- 27:21Speaker 1: B or C to prepare, but it's really easy for
- 27:24Speaker 1: life to get in the way. For taking the kids
- 27:26Speaker 1: to school to make things tough, or you gotta do
- 27:28Speaker 1: stuff around the house, or your wife needs help doing
- 27:31Speaker 1: a B, C, D and D, and all of a sudden,
- 27:33Speaker 1: your whole day is gone and you're you don't you
- 27:35Speaker 1: don't have any time. How do you make time for
- 27:38Speaker 1: those things? Or how do you fit that kind of
- 27:39Speaker 1: thing into your life and make it a habit. It's
- 27:42Speaker 1: either born or it's not. You know, it's like we
- 27:45Speaker 1: we it's easy to say, you know, I don't have
- 27:48Speaker 1: time for our treat today, but it's super important to me.
- 27:53Speaker 1: You know. It's it's you have time, you just have
- 27:57Speaker 1: to make it. You have to make time. Look, you know,
- 27:59Speaker 1: look at they get Cameron Keines like issier than anybody.
- 28:02Speaker 1: He's still shooting, you know, even if it's only five
- 28:05Speaker 1: arrows a day, he's still shooting it when he's in
- 28:07Speaker 1: his work clothes about to walk out his door. It's
- 28:09Speaker 1: just like most people say it's important, but it's really not.
- 28:13Speaker 1: But to Cameron heenes and a million other people out there.
- 28:15Speaker 1: They do like they get home in the dark and
- 28:17Speaker 1: then they turn on their their headlights on their on
- 28:20Speaker 1: their target at fifteen yards to just make those make
- 28:22Speaker 1: those ten arrows count. You know, It's like if it's
- 28:25Speaker 1: really really important to you, truly important to then you know,
- 28:29Speaker 1: you gotta act like it. You can't just say it's important.
- 28:32Speaker 1: You know, if you say it doesn't really mean touch.
- 28:34Speaker 1: As my point, I guess and I'm the same. I'm
- 28:36Speaker 1: guilty of it just like everyone else. My My life
- 28:39Speaker 1: is really busy. I'm traveling a lot. A lot of times.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I'm gone for a month at a time or three
- 28:43Speaker 1: weeks at a time or um. And then I get
- 28:45Speaker 1: home and there's only like two days before I'm going hunting,
- 28:48Speaker 1: and I gotta scramble and get my boat dial to
- 28:51Speaker 1: make sure everything. You know, my arrows are set, all
- 28:53Speaker 1: my gears ready, and I just have to, you know,
- 28:56Speaker 1: get out there and shoot a bunch of arrows, only
- 28:58Speaker 1: you know, a day and a half before I got
- 28:59Speaker 1: to leave, and and you know, in those moments, I
- 29:02Speaker 1: just have to make it count. And then when I'm
- 29:04Speaker 1: at home for a long time, I just have to
- 29:06Speaker 1: force myself to to shoot. You know, I try to
- 29:09Speaker 1: shoot like twenty arrows a day, like three or four
- 29:11Speaker 1: days a week when I'm home. So even though it's
- 29:14Speaker 1: not hundreds of arrows, you just want to make every
- 29:16Speaker 1: single arrow account. Yeah, And I think a lot of
- 29:18Speaker 1: that comes down to And you brought this up earlier, discipline, right,
- 29:22Speaker 1: just having the discipline to you prioritize this thing, and
- 29:25Speaker 1: now you have to do it. You have to follow
- 29:28Speaker 1: through on that goal. And I heard you say once
- 29:30Speaker 1: that there's a whole lot of things that you're not,
- 29:33Speaker 1: but one thing that you are is disciplined. And I
- 29:35Speaker 1: think you said ninety of your success you would probably
- 29:38Speaker 1: attribute to discipline. Um So what what does discipline like?
- 29:43Speaker 1: What to you? How does that like manifest in your life? Like?
- 29:47Speaker 1: How are you disciplined? And how do you How have
- 29:50Speaker 1: you gotten that way? Um? Well, I think I got
- 29:54Speaker 1: up from my mom. My mom is extremely disciplined. She
- 29:56Speaker 1: doesn't doesn't make any excuses, she doesn't blame anything out
- 30:00Speaker 1: anything on anybody else. Um. She she takes full responsibility
- 30:03Speaker 1: for things that are happening in her life. And I
- 30:06Speaker 1: just kind of grew up watching that and having other
- 30:08Speaker 1: examples that were the opposite, and I just grew to
- 30:11Speaker 1: really respect her, and um, you know, she's the type
- 30:14Speaker 1: of person that as she tells you she's going to
- 30:15Speaker 1: be somewhere to meet you at eight o'clock, she's there.
- 30:18Speaker 1: S Um, she's never late, you know, and she just
- 30:22Speaker 1: in her life that's just how she's always been. And
- 30:24Speaker 1: I just kind of learned that from her, and I
- 30:26Speaker 1: really looked up to her and really had a lot
- 30:28Speaker 1: of respect for her because of that. And I guess
- 30:31Speaker 1: that's where I got really disciplined, and I realized that
- 30:34Speaker 1: you know, you know, what you put into something is
- 30:36Speaker 1: what you get out, and um, that's kind of definitely
- 30:39Speaker 1: what's what's happened with my surfing. Just putting in tons
- 30:42Speaker 1: and tons of time ocean time is really paid off
- 30:45Speaker 1: for me. So I try to try to, you know,
- 30:48Speaker 1: bring that into other parts of my life, and with
- 30:50Speaker 1: archery and and bo hunting, I try to like spend
- 30:53Speaker 1: a lot of time as much as I can shunting
- 30:55Speaker 1: with the best people that I possibly can and seeing
- 30:58Speaker 1: just just just be discipline in putting in the effort
- 31:02Speaker 1: and trying to learn, like I don't just go out
- 31:04Speaker 1: there and aimlessly shoot for three hours to shoot my bow.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I go out there and I might shoot for twenty minutes,
- 31:11Speaker 1: but I shoot one arrow, you know, at fifty yards,
- 31:14Speaker 1: and then I go and grab my arrow, walk back
- 31:16Speaker 1: to fifty and shoot again. And then I go and
- 31:18Speaker 1: to have my arrow and walk back to fifty. That way,
- 31:21Speaker 1: you just focus on one arrow at a time and
- 31:23Speaker 1: try and make it a perfect arrow. And you know,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and then when I go hunting and either hunt by
- 31:29Speaker 1: myself and I try and hunt animals that are really
- 31:32Speaker 1: really hard to hunt. Um. And even if I'm not
- 31:35Speaker 1: taking the shots when I get them, I just you know,
- 31:37Speaker 1: I might stalk into thirty yards, um, you know, wait
- 31:40Speaker 1: for the right time to draw, draw my bow, aim,
- 31:43Speaker 1: focus on that spot, um, and then just sit there
- 31:46Speaker 1: and aim right in the kill spot and then let
- 31:49Speaker 1: down and then let the animals walk away and restop
- 31:51Speaker 1: them again. We're stop another group. And I feel like
- 31:55Speaker 1: that sort of practice and and really preparing for the
- 31:58Speaker 1: right moment of truth is super importan. Yes, that like
- 32:02Speaker 1: like concept that's kind of talked about a lot, like
- 32:04Speaker 1: deliberate practice, like having a real purpose to your practice
- 32:07Speaker 1: and not just like you said, flinging arrows around seems
- 32:10Speaker 1: to be the way to to really make a difference. Um, So,
- 32:15Speaker 1: so this you kind of were lucky in some way.
- 32:19Speaker 1: I guess that you had a great role model with
- 32:21Speaker 1: your mom being so disciplined. But what if there's like
- 32:24Speaker 1: someone out there who, for whatever reason, maybe just how
- 32:27Speaker 1: they were raised or their circumstances, they just didn't have
- 32:30Speaker 1: a great background, would become a disciplined person. But they
- 32:34Speaker 1: like hear about people talking about these things, and they
- 32:36Speaker 1: know they want to achieve more, they want to become
- 32:38Speaker 1: a better hunter or whatever might be in their life,
- 32:40Speaker 1: and they're just kind of struggling to follow through on
- 32:42Speaker 1: things they know they should be doing a or B,
- 32:44Speaker 1: but the alarm goes off in the morning and they
- 32:47Speaker 1: just can't get out of bed. I mean, like, is
- 32:49Speaker 1: that is someone just kind of s o l if
- 32:51Speaker 1: that's the kind of person they are, or do you
- 32:53Speaker 1: think that you can change that? Like, can you become
- 32:56Speaker 1: more discipline? And if so, how does someone do that? Uh?
- 33:03Speaker 1: Read David Goggin's book, Um, have you read that? I've
- 33:06Speaker 1: not read it. I've listened to a couple of podcasts
- 33:08Speaker 1: though with him, so I'm familiar with the story and stuff.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, like you know, for for your listeners
- 33:14Speaker 1: out there. If you don't like to read, go and
- 33:16Speaker 1: go and listen to David Goggins podcast with Joe Rogan.
- 33:20Speaker 1: And you know, he was shot and lazy and obese,
- 33:25Speaker 1: and he failed, um in a lot of different ways
- 33:27Speaker 1: trying to get into special forces in the military. And
- 33:31Speaker 1: you know, he had all these really really bad personal
- 33:34Speaker 1: traits and tons of weaknesses and he ended up just
- 33:38Speaker 1: absolutely hating himself, um to anybody who could never change,
- 33:41Speaker 1: you know, and he was a failure for the first
- 33:43Speaker 1: half of his life. And his story is super inspiring
- 33:46Speaker 1: because he just basically, when you know what, I hate myself,
- 33:49Speaker 1: I hate how I am, I'm going to change. And
- 33:51Speaker 1: he basically just pulverized himself and made it super hard
- 33:54Speaker 1: in his life and turned everything around. And and now
- 33:57Speaker 1: he's really inspirationally's culture bit. He's like I think he
- 34:01Speaker 1: was a Navy seal for a very long time and um,
- 34:04Speaker 1: but he's a great guy to listen to and and read.
- 34:07Speaker 1: His book is a total life changer. But I think,
- 34:10Speaker 1: you know, life is short, man, Like you're gonna blink
- 34:13Speaker 1: and you're gonna be sixty or seventy or eighty years old,
- 34:16Speaker 1: and you're gonna look back and just just think you
- 34:19Speaker 1: blew it. You we got one shot. There's no reason
- 34:22Speaker 1: to laying around in bed eating bond bonds, you know
- 34:24Speaker 1: what I mean. Like, if you want to go bow hunting,
- 34:28Speaker 1: go bow hunting. I really really good friends on it.
- 34:31Speaker 1: They're sending me like bow hunting Instagram blinks all the time,
- 34:35Speaker 1: and and like pictures a big Bucks and always talking
- 34:39Speaker 1: about hunting. But these guys don't hunt. They don't go hunting.
- 34:42Speaker 1: They hunt like in their backyard right now and then,
- 34:45Speaker 1: but they talk about hunting all the time. I'm like,
- 34:48Speaker 1: you guys are wasting your time if you're you're you're
- 34:50Speaker 1: over here sending pictures on my phone. Meanwhile, you haven't
- 34:53Speaker 1: hunted in four months, five months, and you can go
- 34:55Speaker 1: hunting every day of the year, Like like get out
- 34:57Speaker 1: there and go do what you really want to do.
- 34:59Speaker 1: If if it surfing, whether it's bow hunting, whether it's
- 35:01Speaker 1: trying to get a promotion at your job, whatever, like
- 35:04Speaker 1: make it count, you know. And and I love like
- 35:07Speaker 1: listening to guys like um, Joe Logan's like that, Camera
- 35:11Speaker 1: Kanes is like that, David Goggins is like that, Um
- 35:14Speaker 1: Oprah Winfrey's like that. I love listening to these people,
- 35:17Speaker 1: like they really do any excuses and then they really
- 35:21Speaker 1: like every accounts of our lives. And and unless you
- 35:25Speaker 1: really believe that and really like live like that, you're
- 35:28Speaker 1: just wasting it. Yeah, I feel like we're so lucky
- 35:32Speaker 1: to to to be living lives we are, and most
- 35:36Speaker 1: of us live in a place where we have freedoms
- 35:38Speaker 1: that are like in an incredible um. You know, we're
- 35:42Speaker 1: just super lucky. And I feel like we need to
- 35:45Speaker 1: live like we're lucky people. I talked to my kids
- 35:49Speaker 1: all the time, you know, I'm like they you know,
- 35:51Speaker 1: they get lazy and spoiled a lot, and like, you know,
- 35:54Speaker 1: like look, you got you got two arms, two legs,
- 35:57Speaker 1: You're healthy. You can go run as fast as you
- 35:58Speaker 1: want right now. You can go swinging as fast as
- 36:00Speaker 1: you want. You can like go play and have fun.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Like think of all the kids that they live in
- 36:05Speaker 1: Afghanic down right, know they don't have the choices you have.
- 36:08Speaker 1: You don't you don't have the options you have. Sing
- 36:10Speaker 1: all the kids that are boring in a wheelcare or
- 36:12Speaker 1: they get cancer when they're five years old, they die,
- 36:15Speaker 1: like ship happens lice snarlie so and it's quick. So
- 36:18Speaker 1: it's like I just feel like, you know, I just
- 36:21Speaker 1: gotta make the most of it. Is really the point.
- 36:23Speaker 1: That's I really was always wondering what the point of
- 36:26Speaker 1: life is, So that's really the point. Make it count. Yeah,
- 36:28Speaker 1: that is that is so true. And and like you said,
- 36:32Speaker 1: it's you gotta live like you're lucky. And then you
- 36:34Speaker 1: also need to realize that in an instant, right, everything
- 36:38Speaker 1: could change. You know, it could be a car accident
- 36:40Speaker 1: or there could be all these things, so so appreciate
- 36:43Speaker 1: every minute too, Like don't don't push things off for
- 36:45Speaker 1: tomorrow or for next year or for some day, because
- 36:47Speaker 1: some day might not come. So, like you said, you
- 36:49Speaker 1: gotta gotta make account and you gotta give it your all, right,
- 36:53Speaker 1: I'd hate to. I feel like one of the things
- 36:54Speaker 1: people talk about the most, like that lying in your
- 36:58Speaker 1: deathbed kind of situation is you don't want to have regrets.
- 37:01Speaker 1: You don't want to lie there when you're seventy five
- 37:04Speaker 1: or ninety or however old it is, and and lay
- 37:07Speaker 1: there and say, what if I wish I would have
- 37:09Speaker 1: tried that, or I wish I would have really gave
- 37:10Speaker 1: this thing by all, I feel like that would be
- 37:13Speaker 1: one of the worst things to be doing there at
- 37:15Speaker 1: the end of your life. You know, I don't want
- 37:16Speaker 1: to I don't want to live in a way that
- 37:18Speaker 1: puts me in that situation. I bet you knowed people
- 37:22Speaker 1: on their death that are doing exactly what you're talking about.
- 37:25Speaker 1: They're all regretting it. They're all they have always regrets
- 37:28Speaker 1: you now looking back and going I wish I did
- 37:30Speaker 1: I wish you did that. Like for most of your listeners,
- 37:33Speaker 1: they have plenty of time to, you know, to make
- 37:36Speaker 1: those changes now. They live in lives now. It's like,
- 37:39Speaker 1: you know, you know that's that's that's what I feel like. Anyway, Yeah,
- 37:43Speaker 1: I think that is. There are some wise words. So
- 37:48Speaker 1: so tell me this. I feel like one of the
- 37:52Speaker 1: like a lot of people listen to this podcast are
- 37:55Speaker 1: really really driven to take their hunting to the next level.
- 37:58Speaker 1: A lot of people are trying to find ways to
- 38:01Speaker 1: to learn more, to get better, to become more successful,
- 38:04Speaker 1: um and so and so that's kind of why we're
- 38:06Speaker 1: talking about this kind of stuff, right, ways to improve yourself,
- 38:08Speaker 1: to improve your success in the field and whatnot. Um
- 38:11Speaker 1: and and A concept that sometimes talked about is like
- 38:14Speaker 1: this idea like going pro. Like when you do something
- 38:16Speaker 1: and I don't mean literally going pro, but like when
- 38:20Speaker 1: you just do something as a hobby, you're just out
- 38:21Speaker 1: there kind of having a good time with it. You're
- 38:23Speaker 1: not going to do a lot of things We've talked
- 38:25Speaker 1: about having this kind of discipline around it. But if
- 38:27Speaker 1: you if you decide you have some goals with that
- 38:30Speaker 1: hobby that you want to achieve, then you it almost
- 38:33Speaker 1: helps to take that switch and flip it and say
- 38:36Speaker 1: all right, you're I'm gonna go pro kind of metaphorically
- 38:39Speaker 1: and do these different things. So I I kind of
- 38:42Speaker 1: want to dig into the situation for you when you
- 38:45Speaker 1: turn pro, because right you you served your whole life
- 38:47Speaker 1: as a kid until you got done with high school.
- 38:50Speaker 1: When you graduate and corect me if I'm wrong here,
- 38:51Speaker 1: but I understand it. When you graduated high school, you decided,
- 38:54Speaker 1: you know what, I'm gonna give us a shot. I'm
- 38:55Speaker 1: gonna try to go pro and you went out for
- 38:57Speaker 1: the tour. Um. What was that shift like for you
- 39:01Speaker 1: to go from just like an avid having fun as
- 39:04Speaker 1: a as a surfer to then I'm going to go pro?
- 39:06Speaker 1: Like what had to be different for you? Simply getting
- 39:09Speaker 1: out of my comfort zone. How was everything? You know,
- 39:13Speaker 1: I grew up in a little town, um on a
- 39:15Speaker 1: pretty quiet island with no pro surfers on it, and um,
- 39:19Speaker 1: you know, the amateur surfing here where I lived was
- 39:23Speaker 1: you know, I was. I was a good surfer and
- 39:26Speaker 1: there was hardly any kids who served even decent. And
- 39:28Speaker 1: so I would win every contest. So I was. I
- 39:32Speaker 1: was like a big fish in a little pond. And
- 39:34Speaker 1: it was very comfortable. You know, I was super comfortable.
- 39:37Speaker 1: But um, you know, and it feels good right to
- 39:39Speaker 1: win contests. And and then I'll go to other islands
- 39:44Speaker 1: where all the kids surfers were, and I get my
- 39:46Speaker 1: ask kick and and you know, and you know, that
- 39:49Speaker 1: was really uncomfortable, and it's just a it's just I
- 39:53Speaker 1: feel like you know, when I when I got older,
- 39:55Speaker 1: and I really made that choice to be super determined
- 39:59Speaker 1: at the to really give a real shot. It's just
- 40:02Speaker 1: a matter of like embracing being uncomfortable. You know, you're
- 40:06Speaker 1: gonna you're gonna lose a whole lot more than you're
- 40:08Speaker 1: gonna win. And if you can't handle that and you're
- 40:10Speaker 1: not cut out for it. And for me, it was
- 40:12Speaker 1: a matter of like just getting used to that, like
- 40:14Speaker 1: getting used to being uncomfortable, just like David Doggan says,
- 40:17Speaker 1: like you know, you're never gonna do anything good if
- 40:19Speaker 1: you're comfortable. If you're in your comfort zone, you're not growing,
- 40:22Speaker 1: you're not learning, you're not getting better. So for bow hunters,
- 40:25Speaker 1: if you want to get better, if you're truly truly
- 40:27Speaker 1: want to get better, get out of your comfort zone.
- 40:29Speaker 1: If you're a white tail hunter and you live in Ohio,
- 40:31Speaker 1: don't just wait for that one white tail hunt you
- 40:34Speaker 1: know Ohio every year like you always been doing. Go
- 40:36Speaker 1: to a different state on a different species. Um you know,
- 40:39Speaker 1: hunt more, go stock them during the off season with
- 40:42Speaker 1: that without a boat, like do something, don't like if
- 40:45Speaker 1: you really truly want to get better and get better,
- 40:47Speaker 1: there's nothing stopping anybody getting you know, get a group
- 40:49Speaker 1: of friends together, go to Hawaii and hunt goats for
- 40:54Speaker 1: three or four days and it's unlimited and you can
- 40:57Speaker 1: hunt them out all day every day. And or if
- 40:59Speaker 1: she or deer or anything in Hawaii, or you can
- 41:02Speaker 1: go to you can get a group of guys to
- 41:04Speaker 1: go to a different state where there's tons of sons
- 41:07Speaker 1: of deer and there's you know, you can shoot a
- 41:09Speaker 1: bunch of them and I don't know, there's there's just
- 41:11Speaker 1: a million things you can do to get better. But
- 41:13Speaker 1: I think where it really really starts for the rubber
- 41:15Speaker 1: hits the road is when you're out of your comfort zone. Yeah.
- 41:18Speaker 1: That that makes a lot of sense. I feel like
- 41:21Speaker 1: so true. Like you said, just the simple actor just
- 41:23Speaker 1: going to new places is at least in the hunting
- 41:26Speaker 1: world can change things up in in big ways that
- 41:29Speaker 1: just force you to learn new things that can help
- 41:31Speaker 1: you back in the original place. Like if you want
- 41:33Speaker 1: to hunt your family farm all the time, that's great,
- 41:35Speaker 1: but going and trying these new things will definitely help
- 41:38Speaker 1: you develop skills that you can take back there. Um.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I've been a huge advocate to for that that idea. Um,
- 41:45Speaker 1: So you you had to get outside of your comfort zone.
- 41:47Speaker 1: You started, you know, certain you made the tour, you're
- 41:51Speaker 1: able to serve professionally now competitively. Now it's like, I
- 41:57Speaker 1: gotta at least I'm imagining now that you're doing this,
- 41:59Speaker 1: you're traveling across the world surfing, I gotta imagine it
- 42:02Speaker 1: became a grind at some point, Like it was probably
- 42:05Speaker 1: really exciting and sexy at first, and then it became,
- 42:07Speaker 1: oh wow, this is a lot of work. There's a
- 42:09Speaker 1: lot of stuff I have to do to stay up
- 42:10Speaker 1: on this, to to be able to be competitive, to
- 42:12Speaker 1: get better, and you're doing over and over and over
- 42:15Speaker 1: and over again. Did you have any kind of routines
- 42:19Speaker 1: you had to build in your life, or any kind
- 42:20Speaker 1: of training regiment or anything that just helped you a
- 42:24Speaker 1: stay sane throughout that grind but be actually like get
- 42:29Speaker 1: through it and be successful, anything like that that you
- 42:31Speaker 1: kind of built into what your daily life to to
- 42:33Speaker 1: make it all work. Yeah. Um, I think that. I
- 42:36Speaker 1: think the number one thing is a work ethic was
- 42:38Speaker 1: that that was a big thing that changed it for me.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Is is really um instilling structure in my life. I
- 42:44Speaker 1: went from just being a kid and then and then
- 42:46Speaker 1: all of a sudden, it's like you know, as you know,
- 42:49Speaker 1: being a kid living at home with my parents too
- 42:53Speaker 1: rarely ever seeing my parents within a whole year, and
- 42:55Speaker 1: being on the road by myself with my friends, and
- 42:58Speaker 1: like all of a sudden, a credit card and money
- 43:01Speaker 1: in your pocket and your France or Japan or Indonesia
- 43:04Speaker 1: or California or wherever, and like no one's telling you
- 43:07Speaker 1: to not party at night. No one's telling you to
- 43:11Speaker 1: not go out with the crazy girls you met that
- 43:12Speaker 1: day all night long, and like nobody's telling you to
- 43:15Speaker 1: to like go to sleep at night at a certain time.
- 43:17Speaker 1: And you know, like no one's telling you to not
- 43:20Speaker 1: do your stretches and to and to eat really healthy
- 43:22Speaker 1: and all that stuff. You don't. I didn't ever had
- 43:24Speaker 1: like a manager and agent or supervisor or anybody that
- 43:27Speaker 1: was traveling with me. It was just we're on the
- 43:29Speaker 1: road like kids. And so for me, it was like
- 43:32Speaker 1: serving was truly important. So instead of parting all night
- 43:36Speaker 1: and raging with chicks and staying up all night and
- 43:40Speaker 1: sleeping in and and you know, eating crappy food and
- 43:44Speaker 1: just just you know, like living that kind of lifestyle
- 43:48Speaker 1: and and and hoping for the best, I had to
- 43:51Speaker 1: like start eating really good food, started physical training, started
- 43:55Speaker 1: doing yoga, started doing breathing, started reading books, started really
- 43:58Speaker 1: trying to like it better, like find any edge that
- 44:01Speaker 1: I could, and trying to make myself better kind of
- 44:04Speaker 1: sharpen the knife, so to speak. And and then and
- 44:08Speaker 1: then find a balance of like, um, you know, when
- 44:10Speaker 1: I was in different places, I would I would have
- 44:12Speaker 1: a balance of like being super physically and mentally fit,
- 44:16Speaker 1: training all the time, putting a ton to work surfing, um.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And then also like having the balance of like going
- 44:22Speaker 1: seeing the place is meeting people, experiencing cultures and food
- 44:26Speaker 1: and the way of life in all these different places
- 44:27Speaker 1: I was visiting. So that was the part that was
- 44:30Speaker 1: keeping me sane and the other part was making me better. Yeah,
- 44:33Speaker 1: what was the most or maybe a couple of things.
- 44:35Speaker 1: But what of these changes, these structures you put in
- 44:38Speaker 1: your life, this different training, whether it be mental or
- 44:41Speaker 1: physical fitness or any of those things you listed there,
- 44:43Speaker 1: what do you think was like the most impactful thing
- 44:45Speaker 1: that What was that change that helped you the most?
- 44:48Speaker 1: Is there anything that stands out? Um? You know that
- 44:50Speaker 1: that nothing stands out from sort of back then, I
- 44:54Speaker 1: just became I just grew up. Really, I went from
- 44:56Speaker 1: being a kid to be an adult and seeing others
- 44:58Speaker 1: around me that became succes us full in trying to
- 45:00Speaker 1: and still some of those things in my life, like
- 45:03Speaker 1: even you know, from from my mom, getting the discipline
- 45:05Speaker 1: and getting structures from some of my other friends who
- 45:07Speaker 1: are competing at a really high level, and seeing like
- 45:10Speaker 1: the way they would analyze their performances and all that stuff, right,
- 45:14Speaker 1: So I started incorporating that into my life. And then
- 45:17Speaker 1: as I got older, um, like I talked to um,
- 45:20Speaker 1: I talked to Joe Rogan about this, because he's a
- 45:23Speaker 1: he lives a very efficient lifestyle. Like he's extremely productive,
- 45:26Speaker 1: and he does a lot in the same amount of
- 45:28Speaker 1: time that you know, everybody has the same twenty four hours,
- 45:32Speaker 1: you know, and it's and it's and it's what we
- 45:34Speaker 1: choose to do with it that really makes a difference.
- 45:36Speaker 1: And like someone like to a Rogan, he's got a
- 45:39Speaker 1: lot more stuff going on than the average person. He's got,
- 45:42Speaker 1: you know, full on family and he's a great family man,
- 45:45Speaker 1: a great dad too, the husband, and spent tons of
- 45:47Speaker 1: time with the family. And then he also he's a
- 45:49Speaker 1: full time standard comedian. He's kind of own shows. He's
- 45:52Speaker 1: got you know, he's got so much stuff going on
- 45:54Speaker 1: with with comedy tours. He you know, he records six
- 45:59Speaker 1: podcasts a week. You know, it's just like an extremely
- 46:01Speaker 1: productive person. And and I talked to him about this,
- 46:04Speaker 1: and and he said that time blocking is the thing
- 46:07Speaker 1: that made a huge difference for him. So he looks
- 46:10Speaker 1: at his day in those Okay, how much sleep do
- 46:12Speaker 1: I need? I need ten hours, I need six hours,
- 46:15Speaker 1: I need four hours, whatever it is. And everybody's a
- 46:17Speaker 1: little different, right, we all we had all work differently
- 46:19Speaker 1: on different different sleep time. So for me, it's about
- 46:22Speaker 1: seven to eight hours, So I need seven eight hours.
- 46:24Speaker 1: So I tied a block that time out obviously for sleep.
- 46:27Speaker 1: And then how many hours a day do I need
- 46:29Speaker 1: to spend my kids for me to feel like I'm
- 46:31Speaker 1: a great dad. And then I block out that time
- 46:33Speaker 1: and like when are those times? It's like before school,
- 46:36Speaker 1: after school, and so that gives me this other time
- 46:39Speaker 1: in between. And so I blocked times out like I
- 46:41Speaker 1: blocked time out for work in my computer. I blocked
- 46:43Speaker 1: time out for time to stretch and do my exercises.
- 46:46Speaker 1: I blocked time out for my kids. That blocked time
- 46:48Speaker 1: out for my wife, blocked time out for my sleeping,
- 46:51Speaker 1: blocked time out for my training, and the and then
- 46:53Speaker 1: and then that really helps you structure your day instead
- 46:56Speaker 1: of just going, you know what, I really need to
- 46:57Speaker 1: shoot my boat sometime today, instead of like waiting and
- 47:01Speaker 1: wondering when you're gonna shoot your boat, Like, hey, after
- 47:03Speaker 1: work five o'clock, you have to get back to the house.
- 47:05Speaker 1: That's when I'm shooting my ball to get out of
- 47:07Speaker 1: my truck, root my boat and shoot ten arrows for
- 47:09Speaker 1: fifty yarrows whatever. If you have time for block out
- 47:12Speaker 1: that time and plans for it. Don't don't like hope
- 47:14Speaker 1: you're gonna get to it, actually plans for it, you know.
- 47:16Speaker 1: And that's I think that's the difference. Yeah, I've heard
- 47:19Speaker 1: a lot alolmost same lines. Just the importance of if
- 47:22Speaker 1: you get on your schedule in some kind of way,
- 47:24Speaker 1: if you actually plan for it, schedule it in there,
- 47:26Speaker 1: there's a much greater chance you're actually gonna do it
- 47:29Speaker 1: versus just kind of having this idea, oh yeah, i'd
- 47:31Speaker 1: like to do that today because you know, like we
- 47:33Speaker 1: talked about earlier, all these other things come up and
- 47:35Speaker 1: all of a sudden, it's eleven o'clock at night and
- 47:38Speaker 1: you didn't do three things that you kind of thought
- 47:40Speaker 1: you might do. So that's a that's a really good point. Um.
- 47:45Speaker 1: So what about this physical fitness side of things, because
- 47:48Speaker 1: that's something I think is becoming more and more relevant
- 47:51Speaker 1: to hunters, especially if you hunt you know, Western big game.
- 47:54Speaker 1: It's it's very relevant, but even white tail guys more
- 47:56Speaker 1: and more people now are getting really into hike and
- 47:59Speaker 1: way back back into public land, and they'll they'll carry
- 48:01Speaker 1: their tree stand and climbing sticks on their back and
- 48:04Speaker 1: they'll hike in as far as they can go and
- 48:06Speaker 1: come in and out and try and get way back
- 48:08Speaker 1: there where it's hard to get, hard to get to
- 48:10Speaker 1: so you can find these older deer. Um. So there's
- 48:12Speaker 1: a need more and more to try to be is
- 48:15Speaker 1: physically fit as you can be, at least to make
- 48:18Speaker 1: sure that's not a variable that holds you back. Um.
- 48:21Speaker 1: I know you talked about you started really ramping up
- 48:23Speaker 1: your training in those early years professionally, but I also
- 48:27Speaker 1: heard that when you retired from the competitive surfing and
- 48:32Speaker 1: switched to just the big wave surfing still professionally, but
- 48:35Speaker 1: you weren't on the on the tour when you did that,
- 48:38Speaker 1: I heard that you took your training to a different level. Um,
- 48:42Speaker 1: is that right? And then what does that mean for you? Like,
- 48:45Speaker 1: how did you take that train in the next level? Um, Yeah,
- 48:48Speaker 1: that's that's correct. When when I was competing full time,
- 48:51Speaker 1: I was doing more mostly like a maintenance program. I
- 48:54Speaker 1: was like just trying to stay physically sit while I
- 48:56Speaker 1: was on the road and I was on the road
- 48:58Speaker 1: a ton, Like I was on the road like ten
- 49:00Speaker 1: months a year. And so for me, it was like
- 49:02Speaker 1: hotel room training and staying you know, staying with a
- 49:04Speaker 1: group of guys in a house in France, and like
- 49:07Speaker 1: everybody's eating bagats and wine and cheese and trying to
- 49:11Speaker 1: you know, find something healthy to eat, and you know,
- 49:13Speaker 1: going for a mile run and doing sit ups and
- 49:15Speaker 1: push ups and pull up to my room and and
- 49:18Speaker 1: so that was like a maintenance program that I was doing.
- 49:20Speaker 1: And then once I stopped competing full time, I had
- 49:23Speaker 1: more time at home and so I could really scale
- 49:25Speaker 1: up my physical famous program. Um. I started doing cross
- 49:29Speaker 1: fit a serge, and some really intense circuit training started,
- 49:32Speaker 1: like entering like little competitions like little track longs and
- 49:36Speaker 1: stuff like that around where I lived, just to help
- 49:39Speaker 1: me get more fit. Um. But for me, it was
- 49:42Speaker 1: like I really focused on big ways surfing, like really
- 49:45Speaker 1: really big ways surfing. So it's like, you know, my
- 49:48Speaker 1: training became like survival training. Um, you know, in order
- 49:51Speaker 1: for me, She's I think that like for for for surfing,
- 49:55Speaker 1: really big grays, the most important components your mindset and
- 49:59Speaker 1: and and the mental aspect of it. And if you
- 50:02Speaker 1: if you believe that you put in the work, that
- 50:05Speaker 1: makes you really really strong mentally. Um And so that's
- 50:09Speaker 1: what I try to do. I did. I did. It's
- 50:10Speaker 1: a ton of physical fitness. I got crazy on on
- 50:14Speaker 1: on a working out and getting fit because I felt
- 50:17Speaker 1: like in those moments, I felt like I had done
- 50:19Speaker 1: the work and then I really deserved to be out
- 50:23Speaker 1: there and I was. I was totally prepared. That's what
- 50:26Speaker 1: That's what gave me the confidence in those moments is
- 50:28Speaker 1: all that work I put in. So you know, if
- 50:30Speaker 1: you if if if killing a big buck this year,
- 50:33Speaker 1: a big bowl is your goal, and you sit around
- 50:36Speaker 1: and you work, you work all day and you get
- 50:38Speaker 1: home and you drink twenty beers and you eat nothing
- 50:40Speaker 1: but crap, and then Elsie's you know, comes around and
- 50:44Speaker 1: that bowl comes into range. I feel like, mentally, you
- 50:48Speaker 1: don't feel like you deserve that bowl and you'll miss,
- 50:52Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I feel like our minds
- 50:54Speaker 1: are so strong that you don't deserve that bowl if
- 50:58Speaker 1: you don't put in any kind of work, and then
- 51:00Speaker 1: your your mind so strong that your your mind will
- 51:02Speaker 1: tell you to miss. But if you shoot a millionairows,
- 51:05Speaker 1: if you try to watch you if you go to
- 51:08Speaker 1: the gym and do the StairMaster, because you're gonna go
- 51:10Speaker 1: hunt the west. If you don't drink twenty beers a night.
- 51:14Speaker 1: You know, if you if you put into that effort,
- 51:15Speaker 1: put into work, and you're disciplined, then you feel prepared.
- 51:19Speaker 1: You feel like you put in the work, and then
- 51:20Speaker 1: you feel like when that bowl comes in, you feel
- 51:22Speaker 1: like you deserve that bowl. And then that's really, really,
- 51:25Speaker 1: really makes a huge difference in your mind. Your mind
- 51:27Speaker 1: feel like you deserve that bowl. You couldn't work, you
- 51:30Speaker 1: should kill that bowl. And when you have that mental that,
- 51:34Speaker 1: you know, when you're looking at that bowl from that
- 51:36Speaker 1: perspective of of you knowing that you earn that bowl,
- 51:40Speaker 1: you're going to kill that bowl. You know. Yeah, there's
- 51:42Speaker 1: so much to the mental side of things. And that's
- 51:45Speaker 1: one of those those I always think about mental toughness
- 51:47Speaker 1: and mental preparedness, like how do you how do you
- 51:50Speaker 1: build that muscle? And I think you're probably right. It's
- 51:53Speaker 1: it's just having done so much work and putting in
- 51:56Speaker 1: so much time to just when when you get to
- 51:59Speaker 1: those moments, you don't need to think about can I
- 52:02Speaker 1: do this or will I be able to do this
- 52:04Speaker 1: or whatever. It's it's it's just it becomes instinct, it
- 52:07Speaker 1: becomes part of you because you've you've grinded for so
- 52:10Speaker 1: long to get to that point. Um. On the on,
- 52:14Speaker 1: you mentioned some stuff as far as you know, don't
- 52:17Speaker 1: drink twenty beers a night and try to eat decent um.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Those are good high level ideas. Do you have any
- 52:23Speaker 1: other basic, um, just healthy lifestyle things that have worked
- 52:27Speaker 1: well for you, Maybe just some things on the eating side,
- 52:29Speaker 1: or or some basic things from the fitness that have
- 52:32Speaker 1: helped you, know that have been workable to fit in
- 52:35Speaker 1: your life, but have helped you, whether it be surfing
- 52:37Speaker 1: or mountain hunting or anything like that. Anything that jumps out, Yeah,
- 52:40Speaker 1: I mean just in my daily life. I try and
- 52:42Speaker 1: eat one meal out of a blender every day. Um.
- 52:45Speaker 1: And I just super simple things like starting in the morning,
- 52:48Speaker 1: I drink a whole a really big glass of water
- 52:50Speaker 1: before putting anything in my body, like like before putting
- 52:53Speaker 1: coffee in my stomach, I drink a big, good, giant
- 52:55Speaker 1: glass of water. Um. And then I try to eat
- 52:59Speaker 1: how the breakfast and then um, I snack between lunch
- 53:04Speaker 1: and breakfast. I snack between breakfast and lunch, I to
- 53:07Speaker 1: have a healthy snack like a small smoothie or some
- 53:10Speaker 1: fruit something like that, for like a bar if I'm
- 53:13Speaker 1: on the if I'm on the go, and then I
- 53:15Speaker 1: have to try and to have a healthy lunch like
- 53:17Speaker 1: slay like stalmon and rice or some salmon veggies or
- 53:20Speaker 1: or like vants and new veggies or something like that.
- 53:23Speaker 1: And then I have a snack in between lunch and dinner,
- 53:26Speaker 1: and then I have a and then my the smallest
- 53:28Speaker 1: meal of the day for me at dinner always, so
- 53:31Speaker 1: like I try to think of food is fuel only.
- 53:36Speaker 1: So like after dinner, I'm probably gonna go to sleep,
- 53:38Speaker 1: so I don't really need a bunch of calories to
- 53:40Speaker 1: go to sleep, right Like that's the last meeting. So
- 53:43Speaker 1: for me, I eat a pretty good sized breakfast because
- 53:45Speaker 1: that's the start of day. I'm gonna be like using
- 53:48Speaker 1: those calories all day. And then the same thing for lunch.
- 53:50Speaker 1: I got gad the afternoon, I'll probably eat pretty good
- 53:53Speaker 1: sized lunch and then I'll have a snack to keep
- 53:55Speaker 1: me going, and then dinner is my smallest meal by far,
- 53:58Speaker 1: so and um, I I try not to eat lots
- 54:02Speaker 1: of rice or lots of potatoes or or French fries
- 54:05Speaker 1: or bread or anything like that. Like for dinner, I'll
- 54:07Speaker 1: try and eat um, you know, mostly like a typical
- 54:12Speaker 1: dinner for me is like sammy and veggies or deer
- 54:15Speaker 1: steaks and veggies or gear tacos or something like that,
- 54:18Speaker 1: like but really small, you know, just a small meal,
- 54:21Speaker 1: and then um, I go to sleep and drink lots
- 54:24Speaker 1: of water and try and get a lot of sleep.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Do you think that the snacking you do in between
- 54:29Speaker 1: your meals is that helping just control your appetite so
- 54:32Speaker 1: when it does come to be dinner or lunch, you're
- 54:34Speaker 1: not picking out right. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah, that's
- 54:38Speaker 1: that's something I'm trying to get better. Yeah. I mean
- 54:41Speaker 1: I also drink a lot of water because you know,
- 54:43Speaker 1: if I get really really hungry, I I stopped thinking
- 54:47Speaker 1: about eating food is fuel, I started thinking about comfort food.
- 54:51Speaker 1: I started thinking about birders and fries. Um. If I
- 54:54Speaker 1: get really really hungry, and then everything goes out the window.
- 54:58Speaker 1: So I try and drink a lot of water, which
- 55:00Speaker 1: keeps my stomach fool and then I eat snacks. I
- 55:03Speaker 1: eat healthy snacks like planas or apples or bars, or
- 55:06Speaker 1: something like that between so I'm not starving when much
- 55:09Speaker 1: comes around and then I have I have a plan, like, hey,
- 55:11Speaker 1: it's for lunch, this is what I need today, and
- 55:13Speaker 1: I'm not like, oh, what should eat? Okay, We'll go
- 55:15Speaker 1: to Chipotle and it's just a giant, giant burrito, you know,
- 55:20Speaker 1: massive burrito with you know, or a French fries in
- 55:23Speaker 1: the burger because when I get hungry, I want French
- 55:25Speaker 1: fries in the burger area. Um. Yeah, So I try
- 55:29Speaker 1: to I try to stop myself from getting like crazy hungry,
- 55:31Speaker 1: and I do that by eating healthy snacks. Yeah. It
- 55:33Speaker 1: kind of comes back to that kind of scheduling idea,
- 55:36Speaker 1: like how do you do all the things you want
- 55:38Speaker 1: to do in your day? You schedule it? Well, how
- 55:40Speaker 1: do you make sure you eat in a decent way? Well,
- 55:42Speaker 1: you can try to plan ahead versus like those impulse
- 55:44Speaker 1: decisions when your your impulse decision making is not nearly
- 55:48Speaker 1: as good as your forward thinking. Yeah it's not as
- 55:52Speaker 1: it's not as um adventurous and and fun, but it's
- 55:56Speaker 1: definitely it's really really good pretty health. Yeah. Yeah, that's
- 56:00Speaker 1: something that that definitely I know, I'm trying to find
- 56:04Speaker 1: ways to just you know, is most of my goals
- 56:07Speaker 1: and the things I'm trying to accomplish are you know,
- 56:09Speaker 1: outdoor pursuit related hunting or backcountry backpacking or whatever it
- 56:14Speaker 1: might be. You know, trying to find ways to just
- 56:15Speaker 1: live a healthier lifestyle. That that seems to be just
- 56:19Speaker 1: that area where there's there's a room for improving for
- 56:21Speaker 1: a lot of us here in America, no doubt. And
- 56:24Speaker 1: it probably just takes a little bit of that discipline,
- 56:26Speaker 1: like we just keep on talking about over and over again. Um.
- 56:30Speaker 1: On the fitness side, any anything, you know, any basic
- 56:34Speaker 1: high level ideas. There are a couple of things that
- 56:36Speaker 1: people could try implementing to try to get ready for
- 56:38Speaker 1: that that first l con or whatever it might be. Well,
- 56:41Speaker 1: just in general, I mean just doing something for thirty minutes,
- 56:45Speaker 1: and I feel like I feel like for most people
- 56:48Speaker 1: they can they can, um like they'll some people like
- 56:52Speaker 1: to swim in a pool and some people hate the water.
- 56:54Speaker 1: You know, it's totally different for each person. So find
- 56:57Speaker 1: something that you actually can stomach and I to do
- 57:00Speaker 1: and do that, but do it for a certain amount
- 57:02Speaker 1: of time, and do it for a certain amount of
- 57:04Speaker 1: days every week. So if that's walking on a treadmill. UM.
- 57:08Speaker 1: If it's that simple, then just go to the gym
- 57:11Speaker 1: four days a week and do it for thirty minutes
- 57:12Speaker 1: a day. Whatever it is. UM. But like specifically for um,
- 57:17Speaker 1: like for elk or hunting the West, definitely like care
- 57:20Speaker 1: master or going to treadmill and put as vertical as
- 57:24Speaker 1: you possibly can. UM. And even better than that is
- 57:27Speaker 1: like you know, if you have time and there's a
- 57:30Speaker 1: hill around or stairs or something like that, but I
- 57:32Speaker 1: really heavy back crack on kind of walk up and
- 57:34Speaker 1: down the stairs, or walk up and down the mountain
- 57:36Speaker 1: on the hills, you know. So that's definitely is a
- 57:39Speaker 1: lot of the best thing you can do. And then
- 57:40Speaker 1: like high elevation, like where I live, there's you know,
- 57:43Speaker 1: I I live at four thousand and then just up
- 57:45Speaker 1: the street from my house the mountain goes to eight
- 57:47Speaker 1: thousand feet. So I can do a lot of a
- 57:50Speaker 1: lot of my hunting. I hunt sheep a lot of
- 57:52Speaker 1: like seven eight and so I do a lot of
- 57:56Speaker 1: like higher elevation hunt anyway. So UM, but I do
- 58:00Speaker 1: us love I love I love like alpine hunts. I love,
- 58:03Speaker 1: UM you know that sort of like adventure backpack doing
- 58:06Speaker 1: yourself kind of like wilderness kind of hunting out at um. Yeah,
- 58:11Speaker 1: so I went, you know, whenever I have a hunt
- 58:12Speaker 1: like that coming up, I definitely try to put put
- 58:14Speaker 1: the time in, so you know, I can't I can't
- 58:17Speaker 1: blame my physical fitness for not killing able. Yeah, speaking
- 58:21Speaker 1: of this kind of training stuff and not necessarily just
- 58:23Speaker 1: physical fitness, but this kind of reminded me of something
- 58:26Speaker 1: I heard you talk about once where you were talking
- 58:29Speaker 1: about the importance to train for these worst case scenarios,
- 58:32Speaker 1: and you talked about like a big wave scenario when
- 58:35Speaker 1: you wipe out and you're underwater for a minute or something,
- 58:38Speaker 1: and you talked about this I think it was the
- 58:41Speaker 1: Ocean Warrior course UM, where you train for those kinds
- 58:44Speaker 1: of situations. You put yourself in that like life or
- 58:46Speaker 1: death scenario UM to make sure that when those real
- 58:50Speaker 1: things happened, you were ready for it. Can you just
- 58:52Speaker 1: kind of talk about what that was like and why
- 58:54Speaker 1: that kind of thing is is helpful for people? Yeah? Um,
- 58:59Speaker 1: so so for need surfing really big waves, it's it
- 59:02Speaker 1: is really truly a life and death type of situation.
- 59:05Speaker 1: That's there. I've had a lot of friends that died
- 59:07Speaker 1: surfing big waves and what I do, and um, they honestly,
- 59:10Speaker 1: they almost always die drowning. So being underwater for too
- 59:14Speaker 1: long he di um. And so I've done a lot
- 59:18Speaker 1: of underwater breast training to to like building my lungs,
- 59:21Speaker 1: but more importantly just to get mentally tougher. UM. So
- 59:25Speaker 1: you put yourself in extremely uncomfortable situations so that when
- 59:30Speaker 1: uncomfortably uncomfortable situation presents itself and it's a really really
- 59:34Speaker 1: it's real life, it's not shocking. So you know, if
- 59:38Speaker 1: you want to become an feel you don't wait until
- 59:40Speaker 1: you're in Afghanistan and be uncomfortable, you know what I mean.
- 59:43Speaker 1: You you do a ton of training that is all horribly,
- 59:49Speaker 1: horribly uncomfortable and just suffer fast. And then when you
- 59:53Speaker 1: get to Afghanistan and you're suffering and you're feed or
- 59:57Speaker 1: full of blisters, and you're cold and you're wet, and
- 59:59Speaker 1: people shooting at you, and you feel like the world's
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: crashing down because that's not your first time because you've
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: been through the training, you've suffered your horrible stuff with
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: and and so it's very similar with surfing. You you
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: try and recreate all those things anticipated happening in real life.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: So under controlled situation. I'll go into a pool with
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: with a friend who's watching me, and I'll basically hold
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: my breath as long as I possibly can and do
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: all these crazy exercises and try and hold your best
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: for a long time and do all these circuit training underwater.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: It's like doing like a jam work out what you're
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: doing underwater in a pool, and sometimes you even go
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: all the way to where you black out. And that's
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: why you have to add do it with somebody, a
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: partner that's going to be sitting there and waiting for
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: that to happen, and then when it does happen, they
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: can bring you up safely. And so when I'm so
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: and I'm serving really big ways and i go under
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: and I'm underwater for a very very long time, instead
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: of like hoping I'm not dying, I'm going back to
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: my process of I've done this before. I've been underwater
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: for you know, five and a half minutes before, I've
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: been underwater for a minute and forty five seconds with
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: a superior heart rate, And I know what this is like.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: It sucks. It's it's feels like you're going to die,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: but you have plenty of time and I have all
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: that information in your head and be thinking about all
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: that stuff. It stops you from panicking. And that's that's
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: what keeps you living. That's that's that's how you survive.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: So have you had had an instance, Yeah, have you
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: had an instance now since you've done a lot of
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: this training where you found yourself in that scenario and
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: you were actually able to kind of step outside of
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: yourself mentally and have that like self talk happen or
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: is it is it just instinct and you do all
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: these things that you're not actually talking yourself through it underwater? Yeah,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: I know I've had those situations and I definitely talked
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: to talk, definitely talking to myself to to just like
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: remember all the training and remember all the steps and
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: remember all the the times where I felt like that. Um.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: But if you do it enough, you don't really need
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: to think about it that much. You know. It's just
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: like you become comfortable with being UNCOMFORTA will do what
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: it's all about, do you see now? Of course, not
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: that kind of specific situation, but there are there any
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: parallels as far as what people could do to train
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: for the worst case scenario in hunting. Like I'm imagining right,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: what I'm jumping to, Like, archery is a great thing
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: to point too, because there's ways you could kind of
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: train for the worst case scenario from an archery standpoint,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: But I don't know, is there any other ways you
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: see that translating to what you do as a hunter
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: or what other people might Yeah, dude, it's like it's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: you know, if you if it's it's just come down
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: to like what's important. Like you know, I have friends
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: that from Hawaii that you know, they're like, I'm gonna
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: go hunting this year for elk, and then they go
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: hunting for elk, and you know, like I'll talk to
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: him and I'll be like, why are you calling me
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: on the phone? Are you supposed to be elk hunting?
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: And they're like, yeah, it was snowing, Yeah it was raining,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: Yeah it was super cold today, or yeah there's elk
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: purn't around. So I came out, I came and got
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: a hotel, and I'm gonna cho for a few days
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: until the snow passes or till the storm pauses, or
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: until it gets warmer. You know what I mean. Like,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: if you if you wait into your elk hunting to
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: be uncomfortable with you. If you wait to your elkhning
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: to be cold, if you wait till your elk hunting
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: to have your feet sword, if your weight who as
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: you wait to elkinning to have your legs cramping up
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: and sword, then you're gonna fail. Dude. You know it's
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: like so simple, but we're just lazy. We're so comfortable now,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: and just like modern society is so comfortable, it becomes
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: soft and just like like a country of pussy's. Really
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I hate ain't that, but it's true and I'm totally
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: guilty too. Like our lives are so comfortable these days,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: they really are. And and so if you have an
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: elk hunt coming up, Sugar, act like it, live like it,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: you know, like put the pack on on the weekend,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: like you know, cut out an hour out of your
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: schedule and go, you know what, honey, on Saturday morning,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna be gone for an hour, find the steepest
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: mountain around where you live, but a fifty pound pack
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: on and walk up and down it a bunch of
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: times and break those boot team, get the blizzers. Figure
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: out what socks work, what what sox don't beat, and
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: if if it's Saturday morning and eight o'clock when you
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: told your wife you're going to go and do that
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: and it's pouring rain. Just what, don't don't go to
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: breakfast instead, don't sit in bed and chill until the
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: rain goes away. But on the range here, go do
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: it just like you would elk hunting. Like it's the
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: same thing when you're elk hunting. If you're in your
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: tent and it's cold and raining, put your raineer on
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: and go hunt. They're almost still out there, you know
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: what I mean? Like no excuses. I feel like if
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: you if you're always looking for an excuse, there's always
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: gonna be one. Yeah. Man, I feel like if you're
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: willing to do that, if you're willing to go through
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: that suffer fest, whether it be the training suffer fest
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: or when it's the actual real deal suffer fest out
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: there and you go through the ship and you get
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: out the other side like that. Yeah, maybe it doesn't
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: sound like fun in the moment, but those are, at
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: least for me, those are the experiences that like the
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: stick with you the most, Like when you have to
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: suffer and go through this really tough stuff, like that's
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: kind of that's when you feel most alive, I think,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: and when you look back on it, I feel like
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: that was that was worth doing. You know. For for
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: a number of years, I didn't know anything about elk hunting.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: You know, I was pretty new to hunting. This isn't
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Like two thousand and six, I started going elk hunting
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: with my buddy from here in Hawaii who had gone
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: elk hunting a few times. But we didn't know how
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: to call elk. We didn't know how to hunt elk.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: We just did a little bit of research online, like
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: as much as we could, but I had no idea
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: how to research anything. So I was just going off
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: his information of where to go, and we we like
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: rented a car and drove to the trailhead and then
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: walk as far as we possibly could, Um, found the
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: found the water, the highest the highest creek on the
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: map that we could, and then um, you know it
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: is And we hunted up for like three years like that,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: like hardcore back country do it yourself over the counter tag,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: you know, trying to beat other hunters, tons of people
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: around and trying to walk further, you know, wake up
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: earlier and just put in a hardcore miles and then
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: So I did that for three years and on my
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: third year end up killing a bowl and then that
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: was a massive That was a huge accomplishment for me.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: In the next year, I was so excited to go
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: back and we were supposed to go back and plan
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: a trip, bought my ticket, organized everything kind about three year.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: Four days before I left, my friend called me that
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: I can't go. Too bids busy, something came up, I
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: can't go, And so I was thinking, like what do
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: I do, like come by myself like in calle. I like, what,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: you know, what should I just call it? Call the
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: trip off? It would have been so easy to call
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: the trip off? And instead I or I ordered a
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: satellite phone for I rented a satellite phone for a
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: week and I said, screw it, I'm going. And so
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I did that hunt called by myself, and and hike
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: eight miles back and up from my park and hunted
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: for you know, eight days by myself. And I didn't
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: kill a bull, but I went through multiple and knowledge snowstorms,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: um bear tracks next to my next to my tent,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: lightning storms, or I had to move my tent the
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: middle of the night, almost getting traveled by Elton Middle
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: of the night, like so many crazy things that would
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: have been so easy to pull steaks and just get
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: out of there and like go back down to the
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: holiday inn, and I just made myself like suffer through it.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: And man, those are the times I don't remember, Like
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: I don't remember all the times when I was like
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: looking for some giant bowl at the time, but I
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: remember all those moments of where I felt like I
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: was about to die or felt super like you know,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: the crazy roller coaster of emotions that come with you know,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: thinking there's a bear outside at night you're by yourself,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: or crazy snowstorm or bear tracks or um. You know,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: all that sort all those sort of things that you
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: go through or like they're just that's that's when you
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: feel like you're living at you know, It's like if
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: you if you always go back to the holiday and
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: when it starts snowing, that you're only living your life.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: That's a shitty way, just not the way to do it. Agree. So,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: so what is going through your mind when you're in
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: that scenarre You're out there by yourself and all this
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: ship is happening, the blizzard, the bears, um, Like, how
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: do what's your like self talk in that kind in
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: those kinds of moments like do you have are you
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: like talking yourself through things? Are you are you just
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: thinking about, Hey, you've got this goal you really want
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: to work towards it, or like what is it? How
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: do you deal with that stuff? For you? Um, well,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: I've learned a lot from from different people that I've
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: hunted with. I hunted with Adam green Tree quite a
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: bit in Australia, and he loves to suffer. He's like
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: a suffer guy. He loves being uncomfortable, and but he's
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: got little tricks like when he's super cold and he's
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: by himself and he's lonely and it's snowing and it's
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: he's in his tent, stuck there in his nighttime and
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: he's hearing bears and stuff, he'll start a fire. He'll still,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: He'll light a candle. He'll you know, like the some
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: think about fire is super soothing and like to humans,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: like if it's just dark and you're by yourself and
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: you have your headlamp on, it creates anxiety, it creates stress,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: creates fear. But if you have a little fire going,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: even if it's a tiny little fire, it really helps
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: that want that, you know, and that's something about the flame.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: Just as humans, it's like mellows us out. It lowers
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: our stress, makes us way more you know, chilled out,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: and like makes it, you know, less depressed more just
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: just in general, like that makes you feel better. There's
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: a lot of like little things like that, getting plenty
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: of rest, like taking little breaks and meditating. There's a
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: lot of things you can do to like get through
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: those periods where, um, sometimes it seems unbearable. You know, Yeah,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I feel those things can definitely be really tough, and
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: it definitely comes back down to the mental side of things.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: And you mentioned something which I don't know much about.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: And for a long time I always thought it was
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: kind of like woo woo. But the more and more
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: I kind of study people that are doing great things
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: with their lives, you keep hearing about it over and
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: over and over again, and I'm starting to wonder is
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: there something to this? Um? And you said meditating, Is
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: that something that in any way you like, is actually
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: part of your life in some way? Is that helpful?
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: It is, um, And it may not be like another
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: person's I think there's a lot of different meditating you know,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: there's a lot of different sorts of meditating. There's the
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: kind where you're shitting um, you know, with a with
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: cross legisition with your kind of not perfect position and
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: you're like, oh mom, that ty of meditating. And everyone
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: has a different type of meditation. For some some people
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: it's like during yoga poses for some people during breathing exercises.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: But yeah, I do I have, I have. I I
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: usually do sort of meditation when I'm when I'm stretching,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: and my exercises I do is really slow exercises, like
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: for my back. My back does really tweaked sometimes, and
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: so I have like a um, like a little routine
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: that I do. I meditate during that and then. But yeah,
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I mean I think meditation to be really a good
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: and everyone has your own way of doing that, but
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: it's a just a way to relaxt and the focus
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: and I think that's good especially to you on like
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: at that country hunt by yourself where you're really uncomfortable
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: or something like that. I just was thinking about the
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: story like on Colorado with my buddy and it was, um,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: it was September and it's it's hot, and one day
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: we woke up really early in the morning, one in
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: the morning, in the pitch black, and walked up over
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: this huge region. Took us forever to get there, and
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: it started snowing like crazy, and it started raining like
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: crazy and then snowing again, and I was soaked to
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: the bone. I was so cold. It went for I
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: was planning it it being like sixties seventy degrees and
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: it was like thirty degrees and it was freezing cold.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: And I was soaked to the bone, like socks were
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: soaked a shitty reindeer on. It all got wet. I
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: was miserable. All I wanted to do was walk back
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: to the truck and started to heat her on, even
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: though it was like three hours away, and um, and
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: I remember my friend was just like, no, we're gonna stop,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: and we're gonna make a fire. And we gathered our
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: would have made a huge, giant infernal and we had
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: the best time ever. We had like a two hour
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: dry out. We took off all of our face, the
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: all of our clothes and like dried it out in
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: the tree and it all got dry and warm, and
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: we were there was just something about that fire, and
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: we even though it was just like two hours of
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: the game. We were completely dry and the weather broke,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: we got nice and then we we hunted all day long,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: super hardcore, instead of walking back to the truck all
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: the way. It just completely changed our perspective on our
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: outlook and we just had an type of day of hunting.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: And so there's like little things like that you can
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: do just change change the situation that you're in and
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: and just makes all the difference. It's like a little
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: mental reset, right. I feel like that's That's one of
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: the things I hear people talk about, Like you said,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: like back on the meditation thing, Like some people assume
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: that meditating is like that home deal, But I keep
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: on hearing from people that are talking about it more
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: so just being like just finding a way to kind
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: of take control of your like just what's going on
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: in your mind and just like focus on something and
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: just kind of resets you just a little bit. Um.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: I could imagine that being helpful. It is no matter.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: I think for me, it's like a it's like a
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: makes making sure that that you're living according to your
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: priorities and your goals, you know, instead of just doing
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: what's comfortable all the time. I keep coming back to that.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: But as I think that's the thing that's like the
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: main thing for me is like really like remembering my
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: priorities and my goals and what I really want to
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: do and then like living my life accordingly, you know
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: every day in that way. Do you have a way
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: to like keep track of that or make sure you're
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: like you're staying on point. I know, like some people
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: I've heard some people talk about like every night before
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: they go to bed, they try to think about like
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: three things are grateful for, or like the two things
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: that really matter, or something that ways to keep reminding
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: yourself making sure you're you're thinking about these things. Is
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: there anything like that that you do um to keep
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: those priorities straight? Yeah, It's it's mostly just focusing on
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: my goals or you know, like focusing on things that
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: I want to achieve, or using on little things that
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: are coming up, like say, say I'm going hunting, you
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: know six weeks from now for access to hear on now,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: Like I'll have that on my calendar and every night
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: before I go to sleep or during the day, I'll
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: think about that and be like, hey, those you are
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: going to be there. I know they are gonna be
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: some big book and so I need to go shoot
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: my bow. I'm gonna do that tomorrow at twelve o'clock,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: right before you go pick up my kids from school,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: you know. So I try to try to stay stay
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: motivated to do the things I need to do in
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: my life that I want to do so I can
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: achieve those goals that are coming up in the future. Yeah,
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: in that makes sense. Yeah it does. I feel like
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: I can do something similar. And you know, when there's
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: tough things that maybe I don't want to do right away,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: I can always think to those goals and remind myself, well,
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: it doesn't feel great to jump out of better right
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: now because you're really tired, but you have that hunt
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: coming up. So those are good ways to always just
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: keep you motivated and keep you focused, keep your eyes
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: in the progress. Um. Now, what about the flip side
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: of all this though, Because I've bously you're you're very
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: goal oriented, very achievement oriented. You're you're focused on the priorities,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: you're doing good work, you're pushing to be the best
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: you can be. Um, there's this flip side of though, this,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: which is where things go too far. Maybe you know,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: like I know, I remember hearing about you talking in
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: the earlier is eve a professional career when the competitive surfing,
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: you know, doing the tour and stuff, you kind of
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: burn out on it. Something just lost the the fun
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: or or something was wrong there and you burnt out
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: on it. You went so hard that it lost you
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: lost the love for the game. Maybe. UM, I feel
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: like that can happen in the hunting world too, where
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: you you go so hard, you love it so much,
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: you push push, push, push push. You're hunting twenty five
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: days straight, all day, every day if you have the time. Um,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden you realize, like it's
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: it's consumed your life. It's taken over your life, maybe
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: in a in a negative way. UM, how do you
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: how did you deal with that in that situation when
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: you kind of shifted your professional focus? What was that
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: like for you? And then how do you think about
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: burnout and letting your drive go too far and balancing
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: all that? You know, it's it's Um. The serving thing
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: is really different in in you know, like in regards
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: to what you're talking about, because, um, you know, I
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: feel like if you're in sports, whether you're whether you're
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: like a professional golfer or professional basketball player or a
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: professional surfer. Like it's such a high pressure situation. There's
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: so many people that want your job and you it's
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: just like the least amount of job security you could
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: ever have as being a professional athlete, and so it's
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: just looking for that edge all the time and putting
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: in more work. It's kind of you sort of have
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: to be completely selfish and almost sacrifice almost every other
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: aspect of your life in order to become successful in
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: athletics or any kind of sports or you know, being
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: being a professional athlete, Like everything else followed by the
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: wayside in order for you to succeed at what you
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: want to do in in being being a pro athlete.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: And so for a long long time, basically everything else
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: in my life completely suffered. I lived a very selfish
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: lifestyle because I sort of had to in order to succeed.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Um and now it's it's definitely not nearly as much
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: and still go oriented. I'm still pretty disciplined. I still
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: have a lot of things I want to achieve and everything,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: but it's not so um grindy, it's not so hardcore
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: and I and there's and and now it's I have
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: much more of a healthy balance um in my life.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: I really like, the most important thing in my life
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: now is my family, and I know that. So I'll
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: be gone on a surf trip, which for me is
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: a work trip, you know, for three weeks, and I'll
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: come home and I really want to go go hunting,
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: and I want to jump on a plane and go
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: hunt deer on Valley. But my my number one priority
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: in my life is my family, so I don't. I
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: don't do that. I come home and try and spend
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: a bunch time with my family, and then I'll work
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: up some time and when I do get a moment,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: I'll try and be bohuding. But but first I gotta
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: I gotta make sure that's my family, because they are
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: number one, and so I'm able to you know, they
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: are my ultimate priority right now. And I'm very lucky
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: to be in a situation of my life now where
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: I can kind of put them first and I can
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: still keep my job and I can still do my
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: job really well. And but yeah, it's a much much
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: healthier balance. And then with bow hunting also, like bow
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: hunting is is a really really important part of my life.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: It keeps me sane and it's something that I'm super
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: passionate about and I love doing. But I don't do
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: it too much. I probably I don't. I don't know
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: how much I hunt. My wife would probably think I
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: hunt a lot, but I don't think I hunt that
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: much at all. That But but I do absolutely love it.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: But I think I love it as much as I
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: do because I don't get to do it as much
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: as I like that makes sense. I have an issue.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: I do hunt a lot. I probably hunt. I probably hunt.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe like forty days a year. Yeah,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: it's quite a bit for most people. I have an
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: issue where I get so focused on some kind of task.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Usually it's it's work related, so hunting related or or
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: the work side of what I do. UM. So I'm
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: very like task orient, very very goal oriented. I get
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: like all in and I get tunnel vision. I get
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: so focused on it because I so badly want to
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: achieve whatever goal that is that sometimes I just completely
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: lose sight of these other parts of my life, like
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: sometimes family stuff. Um. And So I'm trying to get
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: better at like being able to become aware when I'm
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: doing that, like having some kind of self awareness where
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: I can say, WHOA, you're going too far. You need
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: to take a step back and remember everything else is
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: going on. Um. Maybe maybe given some of the stuff
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: you said, maybe that's something you've dealt with at times.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: Do you have a way that you're able to kind
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: of pull yourself out of that when you realize you're
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: going too hard with work or something and you can
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: I don't know, do you have any ways that have
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: helped you to just kind of have that self awareness? Yeah,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: I mean every you know, I I just I just
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: try to keep a balance. It's really but like every
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: now and then, you know, things come up with work
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: where I have to do um trips back to back
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: to back to back, um, and there's some certain things
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: that I can't say no to and and I sort
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: of have to go and and sometimes they build up
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: at the wrong time. So it's really difficult and kind
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: of hard on my family, like gone a lot, Like
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: you know, in a three month period, I might be
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: gone for like you know, six or seven weeks out
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: of three months, and and so it's it's it can
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: be really hard in my family. But for me, I
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: just go okay, like because you know, as I get
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: back I'm gonna spend tons and tons of times, So
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: we're going to block out time right when I get
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: home to really spend time with my family and do
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: some some really special things. Like I'm I'm spending a
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: ton of time with my son because my son is
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: really into surfing now, so we actually spend a lot
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: of time together because we go on search trips together now. Um.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: But then I really try to remember to to make
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: my daughter a priority, and so when I get home,
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: I try and spend a ton of time with my
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: daughter and and sort of make sure it's even if
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: it's not equal. I she knows that it's not all
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: about my son, and that's a real real priority for
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: me to make sure that she knows that I'm there
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: for her as well. Yeah, that's awesome, I have I'm
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: just starting to fear all that out. I have a
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: year and a half old son and um, a tack
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: of a learning experience, So I can totally relate to
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: what you're saying, and I can imagine it's just going
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: to become a bigger and bigger thing that I have
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: to be thinking about how to make sure to balance
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: all that. Um, I think that's probably a good place
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: to start because a lot of people do the same.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: It's the same thing, and that's you know, how do
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: you balance your passion for the outdoors or hunting or
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: your job or whatever. How do you balance that with
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: your with your family and stuff. So maybe to wrap
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: it up, do you have one, you know, final thing
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: that you've learned about, whether it be this issue of
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: balance or maybe even I know I've I've seen you
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: taking your son and out hunting with you and stuff.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: Anything you've learned as far as introducing a child to
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: the outdoors and these kinds of things. Um, maybe maybe
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: leave us with an idea like that. I'm sorry, what
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: was questioning again? I'm just as curious if you had
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: any anything you've kind of learned about introducing your son
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: to the outdoors and hunting and what that's been like. Yeah,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: I think it's I think the I think the biggest
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: lesson for me with with introducing my my kids to
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: archery and belonging is is just like reinstilling what it's
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: really all about, you know, Like how you mentioned at
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: the start about you know, like newer hunters that that's
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: you know, like look at Instagram. Ye all his massive
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: blocks and the massive bulls, and they end up like
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: holding out for some big trophy, um, but they're really
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: missing out on tons of experiences. And I feel like
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: when you have kids, you know, and you know, if
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: you like, for me, I introduced my son to bull hunting,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: and it's when when you're hunting with your son, you know,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: we're hunting hogs or goats or keep or whatever it is,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: and it's like, it's not about the antlers. It's not
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: about what the biggest one is. It's about those experiences
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: with your kids there. It's you know, and that those
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: experiences with your family, or that those experiences with their friends,
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: and it's all about going on those adventures and experiences
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: of of life. You know, like the antlers don't matter.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: They're they're great, they're fun and everything, it's really fun,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: but they really it's really it's really like for me,
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: it's like a low priority situation. And and I think
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: introducing my son to both hunting really sort of instilled
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: why I was hunting, because I was starting to hunt
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: with people that are real high level hunters and and
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: even like people who get paid to go hunting and
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: that's kind of their job and so they have to
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: kill big stuff all the time. Every single hunt they
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: go and have to be a big trophy hunt, and
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: I don't really want to do that. I want to
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: sort of get away from having that perspective. I just
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: want to have hunts that that are really satisfying and challenging,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: and at the end of the year, like look back
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: on the hunt I did that year and les go, well,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: I really needs an incredible hunts with incredible people and
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: things I canna remember forever. Yeahome, I think you're right.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Kids are a really great way of of kind of
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: like recentering you with those sorts of things, just kind
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: of opening your eyes to the fun of stuff again
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: because everything is so exciting and new to them. And
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: I've I've already found that with my son. Just it's
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: it's cool to relive and to just find the joy
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: and the little things again. And I think they help
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: us do that. So it's pretty cool. Yeah, well this
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: is awesome. I I actually, um sorry. One last thing
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: I think it's really cool that I want to share
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: the readers is a friend of mine who's a bow hunter.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: He I got this idea from him, but basically every year,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: at the end of the year, I go through all
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: my hunts and all the photographs that I took on
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: all my hunts. I put them all together and one
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: of those like really cool copy tables picture books, um,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: like from Apple or shutter Flyer or whatever, and they're
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: really cool, and so I have one for like the
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: last like like years of my hunting. Wife Like each year,
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: I have a photo book. And it's a really really
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: neat way to like remember all the memories, whether you're
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: hunting with your son or your father or your really
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: good buddies or by yourself, just like documenting those hunts
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: and putting all those hunts in a picture books for
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: a year. Um, it's a really really neat way to
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: to you know, stay motivated to go hunting and stay
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: motivated to shoot your boat. Just having in your office
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: sitting there and just pick it up some time to time,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: or if your body has come over to have a
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: couple of beers, they can have a look what the
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: hunts that they're wrong with you or or if you
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: went hunted out them, they can see what it's all about.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: That just hearing the stories, and um, I think that's
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: a really really neat way to remember that, you know,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: what's really important about hunting and just the adventure and
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: the stories and and all the all the really neat
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: places that we get to go to and people will
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: get to hunt with. Yeah, so true, that's a great idea.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: And it really it's funny these days with you know,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: we take sony pictures because we've got these cameras in
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: our phones now, so I've got probably more pictures than ever,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: but I never look at them because it's you know,
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: it's it's not I don't know, but for whatever reason,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: I feel like you don't go scrolling through your phone
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: and looking kind of for fund and all these pictures
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: like you might look at a book under table, you know,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: for sure. Yeah, good idea. Well, Shane, this has been awesome.
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: I really enjoyed the chat um really interesting perspective. So
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: thanks for taking the time to do this. No worries.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: I appreciate being on the on the podcast. Yeah, and
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: if anyone wants to wants to learn more about what
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: you got going on, or you know, is there anywhere
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: they should be following you on social media or anything?
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I know you you've done a lot of films and
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: things like that. You know, it's a great documentary out there, Um,
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: anything that you'd suggest people check out. Um yeah, on
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: HBO right now. Uh sorry, on HBO right now. We
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: have the Momentum Generation documentary as a documentary about um,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: my friends and I growing up in surfing and competing
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: and all the crazy things that's happened during our lives.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: And it's a really good documentary. Actually just want the
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: an Emmy for the Best Sports Documentary of the Year.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: And um, so it was a great film and really
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: I didn't have anything with producing it, but um it's
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: a really cool film. If anybody wants to watch it,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: it taps out there. You follow me. I'm not really
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: really active on a lot of social media. I do Instagram, Um,
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: Shane Dorian it's you can just search me, you know
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: it will come up, but not follow me. And that's
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: it really awesome. Well, we appreciate Shane and good luck
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: is coming out in season. Thanks so much. You do
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: all right, And that is a rap. I hope you
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: guys enjoyed this one. In addition to that documentary we
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: just mentioned, if you want to see more from Shane yet,
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: he has a really cool short film out on YouTube
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: that features him and you get see a little bit
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: of his hunting background and how he's sharing that with
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: his son, which is really cool. Um there's actually some
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: other great videos on YouTube to showing him surfing. Some
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: of these just massive waves give you a little bit
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: insight into what he's doing and how intense that is.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: So check all that stuff out, and I hope you
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: are able to take some of these ideas, especially stuff
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: around discipline or putting yourself in the comfortable situations that
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: really stood out to me as things I could take
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: right into my own life to become a better hunter.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: And I love those kinds of opportunities to learn. So
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: I hope you took as much from this as I did.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: And until next time, good luck out in the woods,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: good luck with your scouting, good luck hanging stands or
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: planning food plots or training, whatever might be. And until
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: next time, stay wired to hunt.
