Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: But a real change of pace in just a moment,
- 0:02Speaker 1: because we know that there is some wonderful news out
- 0:06Speaker 1: of the Northern Territory Football League. So essentially, umpires Emma Stark,
- 0:10Speaker 1: Cooper Rainy and also Isabelle Rawsthorne have been announced as
- 0:16Speaker 1: part of the nab AFLW umpiring squad for twenty twenty
- 0:20Speaker 1: two twenty twenty three season. It is marking the first
- 0:23Speaker 1: time in history that NT umpires have been selected to
- 0:28Speaker 1: will adjudicate at this level. Now, I think you've probably
- 0:32Speaker 1: heard me speak to the wonderful young Ema Stark before.
- 0:36Speaker 1: She is sixteen years old, and she's going to be
- 0:39Speaker 1: debuting this weekend, as I understand it, during the initial
- 0:43Speaker 1: round of the nab AFLW season seven, when Essendon take
- 0:48Speaker 1: on Hawthorne this Saturday at Marvel Stadium with mentor John
- 0:53Speaker 1: Howworth or Horworth I think is how you pronounce it?
- 0:56Speaker 1: She joins me on the line. Right now, Emma, good
- 0:59Speaker 1: morning to you.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And Katie. How are you very good?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Jeez, you are just going from one wonderful thing to
- 1:06Speaker 1: the next. Emma.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Oh look, it's insane. I'm as shocked as you are,
- 1:11Speaker 2: and I couldn't be more grateful for the rollercoaster it's.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Been, so tell me what you're doing this weekend and
- 1:18Speaker 1: tell us a bit more about it.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So basically, I got the clock on Monday, the confirmation
- 1:25Speaker 2: that I've been making my AFLW umpiring debut at Marvel
- 1:30Speaker 2: Stadium on Saturday night, Essendon versus Hawthorne clash.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Oh, how excited are you?
- 1:38Speaker 2: I couldn't describe how excited I am.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I literally, Oh, this is so wonderful. Now, now you
- 1:49Speaker 1: are sixteen years old, so you, I mean, you're so young.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Are you the youngest person to have vumpired at this level?
- 1:58Speaker 2: I couldn't tell. I couldn't confirm with you, but I'm
- 2:01Speaker 2: the youngest on the AFLW list. I'm not sure if
- 2:04Speaker 2: anyone younger has umpired, though.
- 2:07Speaker 1: It's an amazing feast. We also know that you were,
- 2:09Speaker 1: of course the Junior Sportsperson of the Year at the
- 2:11Speaker 1: Northern Territory Sports Awards, and we spoke to you at
- 2:14Speaker 1: the time that that was happening. You're a great young
- 2:17Speaker 1: player as well. What's it like for you, Emma, like
- 2:20Speaker 1: when it comes to the umpiring and obviously juggling your schoolwork,
- 2:24Speaker 1: juggling the playing juggling everything that you are right now.
- 2:27Speaker 1: How hard is it?
- 2:29Speaker 2: Oh, Katie, It's so hard, especially at the moment. Like
- 2:34Speaker 2: I've been lucky enough to go away in the state
- 2:36Speaker 2: a few times putting and umpiring. This year, I've really
- 2:40Speaker 2: had to try hid to balance my work. I I'm
- 2:42Speaker 2: even taking my laptop away and do some stuff on
- 2:45Speaker 2: the playing this weekend.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Oh it might like it'll be a real juggle. But
- 2:49Speaker 1: this is such a wonderful opportunity for you, isn't it.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Oh, look, it's a great opportunity for everyone as well,
- 2:57Speaker 3: like hoping to broaden was perspectives and see that. Maybe, yes,
- 3:03Speaker 3: playing football is ideal, but you know, give umpiring a
- 3:06Speaker 3: go because it just gives you so.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Many life skills and it's just fantastic.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I love that, and I love that. You know you've
- 3:13Speaker 1: got that message as well, because let's be honest, you know,
- 3:15Speaker 1: nobody would be able to play if we don't have
- 3:17Speaker 1: great umpires too, So it is such an important role,
- 3:20Speaker 1: you know, umpiring the footy too, Oh.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Definitely, Like usually it's about footy players. Footy players are
- 3:29Speaker 2: great too, But you know, I've definitely fund tuck on
- 3:32Speaker 2: the green. Give umpire a go because you don't know
- 3:34Speaker 2: what it's like till you give a shot.
- 3:36Speaker 1: That's right, hey, And you're not the only one obviously,
- 3:39Speaker 1: there's Cooper and Isabelle as well. They've also been announced
- 3:44Speaker 1: as part of the nab AFL w Umpiring Squad. How
- 3:47Speaker 1: wonderful is it to actually see Territorians included on this
- 3:52Speaker 1: list this year?
- 3:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's so fantastic, Like Cooper and Easy have
- 3:57Speaker 2: been working so far, so high for this spot well,
- 4:00Speaker 2: Cooper being sixteen nearly seventeen and Isabelle being seventeen. It's
- 4:05Speaker 2: great to have a young bunch representing the antis showing
- 4:09Speaker 2: and what we've got.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Oh, you guys are awesome. I love this. I love
- 4:13Speaker 1: that again that you're all sixteen and seventeen and you know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and umpiring at this level. I just think that you
- 4:20Speaker 1: are trio of Territorians that we should all be bloody
- 4:22Speaker 1: proud of.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Oh thanks Katie.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yeah, oh mate, I love seeing what you are doing.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I love seeing the way that you're going from strength
- 4:32Speaker 1: to strength. I know that your family is incredibly proud
- 4:35Speaker 1: of you. Your grandparents listen to the show. A big
- 4:37Speaker 1: shout out to them this morning too.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Oh they're actually listening right now. I think Mom's you
- 4:42Speaker 2: and grandfarre haircut the other.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I love it. You come from such a beautiful.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Family, Emma.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I always appreciate your time. Let us know how it
- 4:53Speaker 1: all goes on the weekend. And a big congratulations to
- 4:57Speaker 1: you three territorians doing great stuff.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Thank you so much, Katie, thank you
