- 0:00Speaker 1: Or on our website nine through three kji dot com,
- 0:02Speaker 1: or on the good old fashioned terrestrial radio and Great Weekend.
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Gorge is still unbelievable. First time in twenty nine
- 0:11Speaker 1: years i'd been to the Gorge. When's the last time?
- 0:12Speaker 1: Where have you been to the Gorge? Gross? You remember? I
- 0:14Speaker 1: only drove by it. I've never been out there.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I've seen all the amazing pictures about it and people
- 0:19Speaker 2: have said great things. I just haven't gone and participated
- 0:24Speaker 2: at a live venue there.
- 0:25Speaker 1: It's a mix of neglectic mix of music that they
- 0:28Speaker 1: bring out there too on Saturday night. I didn't know
- 0:31Speaker 1: this when I bought the tickets for my wife. She's
- 0:33Speaker 1: a big Brandy Carlisle fan. From we'd mentioned lives in
- 0:37Speaker 1: Maple Valley and Brandy Carl the headlining act. I said, sure,
- 0:40Speaker 1: let's buy tickets to Brandy Carl out the Gorge sounds great.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And then on my drive there, my wife tells me
- 0:45Speaker 1: we brought a couple friends of ours that Bonnie Rait
- 0:48Speaker 1: was playing too, and I thought Bonnie Rait is an
- 0:51Speaker 1: opening act. No, Bonnie Ray was like a co headliner.
- 0:55Speaker 1: She's seventy six years old and she played for an
- 0:58Speaker 1: hour and a half. Brandy Carlyle didn't take the stage
- 1:04Speaker 1: almost ten o'clock, and then Bonnie Ray came back out
- 1:08Speaker 1: for a couple songs with Brandy Carlile, including a Joni
- 1:12Speaker 1: Mitchell song, and Brandy Carlile is credited for bringing Joni
- 1:16Speaker 1: Mitchell out of seclusion basically the last few years, including
- 1:19Speaker 1: a show at the Gorge. If people still talk about
- 1:22Speaker 1: so here's Bonnie Ray, a legend, Brandy Carlile, a local legend,
- 1:26Speaker 1: on the stage of the Gorge at midnight Sunday morning
- 1:31Speaker 1: playing Joni Mitchell and I looked at my life. It
- 1:34Speaker 1: was like, this is way more than we bought. I
- 1:38Speaker 1: didn't know that I was gonna get Bonnie Ray too.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It was great, and it's setting and the sunset, and yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 1: it was. It was fantastic. And so if you get
- 1:47Speaker 1: a chance to go out to the Gorge, do it.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I know there's some bad publicity about getting in and
- 1:51Speaker 1: how hard it is going to in. We didn't have
- 1:52Speaker 1: any trouble at all. Apparently they made some adjustments from
- 1:55Speaker 1: the previous weekend shows. And I mean we had to
- 1:57Speaker 1: wait a really long queue to get in. It took
- 2:00Speaker 1: forty five minutes. But so what and the general emission.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Lawn seating is still the way to go. I know
- 2:05Speaker 1: that place has just mushrooms since I literally in some
- 2:09Speaker 1: cases since I've been there. I remember I told you
- 2:12Speaker 1: I saw Prince twenty nine years ago. It might have
- 2:14Speaker 1: been five thousand people to capacity there. They hold twenty
- 2:18Speaker 1: thousand people in the Gorge Cris. It's larger than Climate
- 2:20Speaker 1: Pledge Arena. That's insane.
- 2:22Speaker 2: But it is outside so long because you got I guess,
- 2:25Speaker 2: a blanket or yeah, we're in you could just chill.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And how far back is the view? I guess, I
- 2:30Speaker 1: mean it's out there. I mean we were probably halfway
- 2:33Speaker 1: up the upper lawn section and it went beyond us
- 2:37Speaker 1: another fifty hundred yards and at the very top you
- 2:40Speaker 1: need a telescope. I mean you're talking about maybe a
- 2:43Speaker 1: quarter mile maybe further, maybe not quite that far, but
- 2:46Speaker 1: oh yeah, a couple thousand, a couple five hundred feet
- 2:51Speaker 1: or so. I mean, it's a couple basketball courts at
- 2:54Speaker 1: least to the state. But of course nowadays they have
- 2:56Speaker 1: the two big giant projection screens and see that all
- 2:59Speaker 1: the way to right. And yeah, the setting is still beautiful,
- 3:03Speaker 1: but I can't I couldn't believe how large the Gorgeous
- 3:06Speaker 1: could become, and they told me twenty thousand people and
- 3:08Speaker 1: it was sold out Saturday night. It was packed for
- 3:11Speaker 1: Brandy Carlisle and Bonnie Ray. Sarah B. Brialis was the
- 3:15Speaker 1: lead act. And it was a great show, really really
- 3:17Speaker 1: good time. So if we get a chance to get
- 3:18Speaker 1: out there on the show today, we're gonna talking about
- 3:21Speaker 1: how the seahawkst got extra third round picks in each
- 3:24Speaker 1: of the first two drafts. We're to talk about Mariner's piggyback.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It's the most successful, unpopular part of this first place team.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Remember we talked Friday about the tragic death of four
- 3:34Speaker 1: times Stanley Cup champion Claude Lemieux and what police in
- 3:38Speaker 1: Florida who found him said they believe was an apparent suicide. Well,
- 3:42Speaker 1: claud Lemmew's family is donating Lemieu's brain to Boston University's
- 3:46Speaker 1: CTE Research Center to continue that center's study of the
- 3:50Speaker 1: effects of repetitive head trauma and athletes. Those tests, of course,
- 3:54Speaker 1: can only happen after an athlete's death. And really commendable
- 3:59Speaker 1: of Claude Lemux in a time of absolute grief. I
- 4:01Speaker 1: mean this is sudden out of nowhere. Remember three days
- 4:03Speaker 1: before he was being fedted and cheered and roared in
- 4:07Speaker 1: the arena in Montreal holding a torch before Stanley Cup
- 4:10Speaker 1: playoff game. Three days later, their husband and father found
- 4:14Speaker 1: dead in apparent suicide. Now they're selflessly donating his brain
- 4:19Speaker 1: for research to try to better our understanding of CTE
- 4:23Speaker 1: and head injuries. He played twenty one years in the NHL.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Claudlum you did and his parent, his family suspects that
- 4:29Speaker 1: perhaps had trauma, had something to do with what he
- 4:33Speaker 1: was battling, and really just a selfless and heroic act
- 4:37Speaker 1: of their family in the middle of all of this
- 4:39Speaker 1: to do that and the NBA Finals. So I was
- 4:42Speaker 1: at the Gorge on Saturday, so I didn't see. I
- 4:45Speaker 1: just got alerts on my phone about Game seven. We're
- 4:49Speaker 1: gonna talk to Dan Weiss, who was the play by
- 4:51Speaker 1: play guy courtside in Oklahoma City for the Spurs getting
- 4:54Speaker 1: to the NBA Finals against the Knicks after beating the
- 4:57Speaker 1: Thunder in Game seven. Of course, eleven thirty year text
- 4:59Speaker 1: for four or five one. We always readback your text
- 5:01Speaker 1: on the Tacoma Dodge textan will do that at eleven thirty, Chris,
- 5:05Speaker 1: did you know today is the forty seventh anniversary of
- 5:08Speaker 1: a very very big basketball thing here in Seattle. Give
- 5:11Speaker 1: it to us. The Seattle SuperSonics won the NBA championship
- 5:15Speaker 1: forty seven years ago today June one, nineteen seventy nine,
- 5:18Speaker 1: folks who have been here in the city morning the
- 5:20Speaker 1: day are posting pictures of the raucous celebration through downtown Seattle.
- 5:25Speaker 1: June nineteen seventy nine. I thought this was really cool, Chris.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Last night, my wife, so we go on a walk
- 5:31Speaker 1: after dinner. We have dinner on the back deck because
- 5:33Speaker 1: it's a beautiful Seattle summer night, and we walk around
- 5:35Speaker 1: Green Lake after dinner and she says, let's stretch. Said,
- 5:38Speaker 1: we didn't go to yoga this morning. I got back
- 5:41Speaker 1: for the gorge at four o'clock in the morning, so no,
- 5:43Speaker 1: we didn't go to yoga's anymoreing she says, let's stretch.
- 5:46Speaker 1: So I We're sitting on the floor doing lower Lake
- 5:49Speaker 1: stretching or whatever. And she starts getting mad at me
- 5:52Speaker 1: because I'm looking at my phone. You're looking at your phone. Well,
- 5:55Speaker 1: what captivated me on my phone was a picture of
- 5:57Speaker 1: Mitch Johnson, the Spurs coach Saturday night in the locker
- 6:01Speaker 1: room in Oklahoma City, oh Day, class of two thousand
- 6:03Speaker 1: and four. Mitch Johnson, two time Washington State High school
- 6:07Speaker 1: champion MVP of the state tournament as a senior twenty
- 6:09Speaker 1: two years agoing to Tacomadome. Mitch Johnson was holding the
- 6:12Speaker 1: Western Conference Championship trophy in the Spurs locker room Saturday
- 6:15Speaker 1: night in Oklahoma City, while wearing a T shirt that
- 6:18Speaker 1: had won a picture of Jimmy Hendricks on it that
- 6:21Speaker 1: caught my eye, the Seattle Legend, the Immortal and Jimmy
- 6:25Speaker 1: Hendricks was wearing a nineteen seventy zero Sonics jersey, the
- 6:28Speaker 1: white with the Sonics green arched green, Sonics green and white,
- 6:36Speaker 1: and he was wearing number twenty seven. It turns out
- 6:39Speaker 1: the number twenty seven was the number that Mitch Johnson's father,
- 6:42Speaker 1: John Johnson, wore as a starting forward on that nineteen
- 6:45Speaker 1: seventy nine Sonics championship team. This was Mitch Johnson while
- 6:49Speaker 1: wearing that jersey, while holding that trophy in the locker
- 6:52Speaker 1: room in Oklahoma City, talking to his Spurs players Saturday night.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Talked about a thousand blows and you may not get
- 6:58Speaker 3: what you want out of those thousands blows, but they're
- 7:00Speaker 3: going to lead to what you want. We have started
- 7:03Speaker 3: to get better at that. What an accomplishment of what
- 7:06Speaker 3: we just did being the defending champs on the road
- 7:09Speaker 3: seven games through all that that we've been that sounds
- 7:12Speaker 3: like a whole lot of experience to me.
- 7:15Speaker 1: That's Mitch Johnson talking to his player. Mitch Johnson who
- 7:19Speaker 1: I heard Spencer Hawes on my drive in today talking
- 7:21Speaker 1: to Chuck Powell about how Mitch Johnson was overshadown on
- 7:25Speaker 1: his AAU team as a team because he had John
- 7:28Speaker 1: Brockman as a teammate. Martell Webster was on that AAU
- 7:31Speaker 1: team that Mitch Johnson was on. Mitch Johnson ended up
- 7:34Speaker 1: signing a scholarship and played basketball at Stanford, and he
- 7:38Speaker 1: went to Europe to play basketball for a while, and
- 7:40Speaker 1: he began his coaching career in the G League, and
- 7:43Speaker 1: he up and moved his family to Austin, Texas, and
- 7:45Speaker 1: that's where he began his coaching career in the G
- 7:48Speaker 1: League and now in his first year of coaching the Spurs,
- 7:52Speaker 1: he's in the NBA Finals. This will be the eighth
- 7:54Speaker 1: straight season with a new NBA champion at extends the
- 7:58Speaker 1: longest streak in league history. Plus it's the fourth straight
- 8:01Speaker 1: season two new teams are in the NBA Finals. That's
- 8:03Speaker 1: pretty cool, a little freshness for your league, Chris, that's
- 8:07Speaker 1: the first time that's ever happened. So last it's Knick
- 8:09Speaker 1: Spurs of course this year, thunder Pacers last year. Then
- 8:11Speaker 1: it was Celtics Mavericks the year before that, and Nuggets heat.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Those are all different matchups. Then the first time with
- 8:17Speaker 1: two new teams in the finals. Then it happened again
- 8:19Speaker 1: this year. So how'd they do it? Chris? I mean
- 8:23Speaker 1: I heard web Benyama wasn't exactly domin though he had
- 8:25Speaker 1: a great game. He wasn't like take over the game.
- 8:28Speaker 1: How did they do it? Over?
- 8:29Speaker 2: But he was the tone setter right he is. And
- 8:32Speaker 2: they did it through defense, physicality, sliding their feet, playing
- 8:37Speaker 2: as a team. I mean he shut down chet Holmgren.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Dude played like thirty plus minutes and had two shot attempts.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Like That's he didn't do it with the numbers.
- 8:49Speaker 2: He didn't drop forty and have twenty rebounds. But his presence,
- 8:53Speaker 2: his ability to slide his feet and test shots, it
- 8:56Speaker 2: brought out the best in everybody else. You can look
- 8:59Speaker 2: at the roster and he named it. You're like, oh
- 9:00Speaker 2: my gosh. These guys stepped up, making big shots, making
- 9:03Speaker 2: big plays. Luke Cornett had an amazing chase down block
- 9:07Speaker 2: on Isaiah Isaiah Harkenstein. It was an incredible play. And
- 9:12Speaker 2: Luke Cornett is not the most athletic dude on the court,
- 9:15Speaker 2: but when you watch that replay of him sprinting back
- 9:17Speaker 2: on defense and him pinning that ball.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Did see that? Yeah, Like that is the heart of
- 9:22Speaker 1: a champion.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Now, granted he's won a championship, he won it with
- 9:25Speaker 2: the Boston Celtics, but now he's here with a new team,
- 9:27Speaker 2: a young team that is just as hungry and just
- 9:29Speaker 2: as talented, and they have their leader in Victor. I
- 9:32Speaker 2: think everyone just could sense the moment and they relished it.
- 9:35Speaker 2: They attacked it, and they got it done. And you
- 9:37Speaker 2: also got to give credit to Mitch Johnson for having
- 9:40Speaker 2: these young guys ready to play.
- 9:41Speaker 1: On the road. They didn't play at home.
- 9:43Speaker 2: They were on the road against a team that is
- 9:46Speaker 2: for the past two seasons been really dominant at home,
- 9:48Speaker 2: and they prove that they are ready for this moment.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Victor Wibenyama is proving that he's ready to be the
- 9:56Speaker 2: face of this next of this league if he hasn't
- 9:59Speaker 2: done so already. And you just saw the defending champion
- 10:02Speaker 2: Thunder just failed to get consistent buckets after maybe going
- 10:07Speaker 2: on a run. The Spurs had an answer after every
- 10:09Speaker 2: single time, whether it was victor, whether it's Darren Fox, Johnson,
- 10:13Speaker 2: you name it. Multiple players stepped up stefan Castle with
- 10:16Speaker 2: huge clutch shots, vessel, same type thing. Everyone did their part,
- 10:21Speaker 2: played their role. And while if you're a Thunder fan,
- 10:25Speaker 2: which none are existing in Seattle, that might have been heartbreaking,
- 10:27Speaker 2: especially for a team that won sixty plus games, but
- 10:30Speaker 2: for the Spurs it felt like the beginning of the
- 10:34Speaker 2: women Yama era. And for the Spurs that survived and
- 10:38Speaker 2: again a hostile environment to just do it on the
- 10:40Speaker 2: road and do it so efficiently and looked they looked
- 10:43Speaker 2: the part. They didn't look like they didn't belong Usually
- 10:45Speaker 2: you'll see some young teams. Yeah, for example Detroit Pistons,
- 10:48Speaker 2: they didn't look like they belonged. No, they didn't. They
- 10:50Speaker 2: just looked young. They didn't have that experience. But you
- 10:53Speaker 2: could say the same about the Spurs. But oh, No,
- 10:55Speaker 2: they looked prepared and ready, and you gotta give a
- 10:57Speaker 2: lot of credit to that team and Mitch Johnson for
- 10:59Speaker 2: having them boys ready to go on the road and
- 11:00Speaker 2: get it done.
- 11:01Speaker 1: When you say play defense, I mean that alone gets
- 11:03Speaker 1: my attention. Yeah, there you could. I could show you
- 11:06Speaker 1: six seven plays where the Spurs are just defending at
- 11:10Speaker 1: an elite level, and they've done it throughout the series.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Sometimes you just got to tip your hat to the
- 11:14Speaker 1: offensive player for making an incredible shot, but those shots
- 11:17Speaker 1: weren't falling on in that game. It just didn't go
- 11:20Speaker 1: their way, and you got to give credit where credit
- 11:22Speaker 1: is due, and they've earned that. So I think they're
- 11:24Speaker 1: gonna en up winning the championship. They will be tested
- 11:27Speaker 1: against this Knicks team that is also good defensively, and
- 11:29Speaker 1: they have some guys that can get to the basket
- 11:31Speaker 1: and score. But I think Victor is just he's a
- 11:34Speaker 1: game changer man.
- 11:35Speaker 2: You don't have seven four dudes that are able to
- 11:38Speaker 2: do what he's doing, and it just makes that much
- 11:40Speaker 2: more of a challenge. And also read a piece by
- 11:43Speaker 2: an athletic reporter that actually he was writing that Jamal
- 11:48Speaker 2: Crawford and Winbiyama they had had a meal before. I
- 11:52Speaker 2: think it was game. I don't remember which game it was.
- 11:54Speaker 2: But nonetheless, Jamal's actually working with Wombin Yama on his handles.
- 11:58Speaker 2: So some of these things that you're seeing shout out
- 12:01Speaker 2: to Jamal crawp for getting that opportunity to work with
- 12:04Speaker 2: women Yama and build his game, because that was something
- 12:06Speaker 2: that they wanted to add to. And Jamal actually reached
- 12:08Speaker 2: out to Greg Papovitch and Papa was like, that's a
- 12:10Speaker 2: great idea, man, get him in the lab with you,
- 12:13Speaker 2: work on his game and let's see where can go
- 12:15Speaker 2: to the next level. And there was a point from
- 12:17Speaker 2: the story where Victor saw a matchup one on one
- 12:20Speaker 2: and Jamal caught it. Oh yeah, he's gonna attack him.
- 12:22Speaker 2: He sees it. It's food, and what do you know?
- 12:24Speaker 2: It was a bucket right then and there. And that
- 12:26Speaker 2: was just an example of because I didn't know that
- 12:28Speaker 2: cool fact that Jamal had taken the time to have
- 12:31Speaker 2: lunch with him and then also after lunch go out
- 12:34Speaker 2: and work on their game, work on his game. So
- 12:36Speaker 2: that's just a really cool nugget there that Jamal, who's
- 12:38Speaker 2: now calling games on the broadcast, actually got some time
- 12:41Speaker 2: with Wimby to work on his skills set, and it's
- 12:44Speaker 2: just really cool to see it grow. And now he's
- 12:45Speaker 2: on the biggest stage at the NBA Finals, and he's healthy.
- 12:49Speaker 2: So I think this is a great opportunity for a
- 12:52Speaker 2: new era, a new dawn of the NBA. And you're
- 12:54Speaker 2: looking at one of the new guys, new faces, and
- 12:56Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be Victor and a couple other
- 12:58Speaker 2: young guys.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Why are we talking about the Spurs so much? Is one.
- 13:02Speaker 1: They're the heroes, Mitch Johnson and women and Yama the
- 13:04Speaker 1: heroes for taking down the anti Sonics the Thunder. But
- 13:08Speaker 1: to to your point, Chris, they're so young and women
- 13:10Speaker 1: yam is still so young, and Mitch Johnson's first year's coach.
- 13:14Speaker 1: These cats are still going to be around on the
- 13:15Speaker 1: Western Conference when this new Sonics come back. Yeah, any
- 13:19Speaker 1: fun twenty Yeah, yeah, twenty twenty eight, there's Johnson back
- 13:21Speaker 1: in Seattle. What's up, man, exactly? Take it easy on
- 13:24Speaker 1: us for a new for a new team. Yeah, the
- 13:27Speaker 1: NBA expansion prices, we could talk about that. Don Ian
- 13:29Speaker 1: has talked about this a few times. It's going to
- 13:31Speaker 1: take a while for the Sonics to be really good.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I mean, NBA expansion process takes a start. Try to
- 13:37Speaker 1: find that fifteen year old that's doing really well right now.
- 13:39Speaker 2: He might be our number one. He might be the
- 13:41Speaker 2: guy that helps bring us back to the postseason.
- 13:44Speaker 1: That's right. But yes, the Spurs are going to be
- 13:47Speaker 1: around when the Sonics come back and start playing again.
- 13:50Speaker 1: But Mitch Johnson is yeah, he really. The shirt was
- 13:53Speaker 1: really cool to Jimmy Hendrick. For those of you knew
- 13:56Speaker 1: to Seattle, Yes, Jimmy Hendrick's absolute legend. Yes, I realized
- 13:58Speaker 1: Jimmy Hendricks wasn't alive and eighteen seventy nine when the
- 14:00Speaker 1: Sonics won, and that was a conflagration of the Tricks
- 14:05Speaker 1: for wearing his dad's jersey number twenty seven, other than
- 14:08Speaker 1: seventy nine Sonics team. But if you had new to Seattle,
- 14:11Speaker 1: go up to Capitol Hill and there's a shrine to
- 14:13Speaker 1: Jimmy Hendricks right along Broadway, a small statue in a
- 14:17Speaker 1: plaque for Jimmy Hendricks former Army.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I have breaking news for you. This
- 14:24Speaker 2: is insane and this is actually real rap sheet. I Rappaport,
- 14:29Speaker 2: Adam Schefter. The Browns are finalizing a trade that will
- 14:32Speaker 2: send two time Defensive Player of the Year Miles Garrett
- 14:35Speaker 2: to the Los Angeles Rams.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Holy bleep, I was being I heard talk that the
- 14:42Speaker 1: Rams are going to offer a like herschel Walker type
- 14:44Speaker 1: package all their draft from Miles Garrett. It was wow.
- 14:50Speaker 1: The talking Cleveland was that it would be a post
- 14:52Speaker 1: June one move for salary cap purposes. And here are
- 14:54Speaker 1: the places here.
- 14:55Speaker 2: In first here it is Jared versus a first rounder
- 14:58Speaker 2: and more so we'll find out out as the morning
- 15:01Speaker 2: goes on, but Jared Verse and more.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I was hearing that it could be a herschel Walker
- 15:06Speaker 1: type hall where you get an entire draft on top
- 15:09Speaker 1: of a player. Oh my goodness, Miles Garrett, the NFL
- 15:14Speaker 1: defensive player of the Year to the Rams. That'll give
- 15:19Speaker 1: Brian Flurry and the Seahawks offense something. Oh man, that's
- 15:22Speaker 1: at least they lose Verse.
- 15:24Speaker 2: But I mean, you just gained arguably the best player
- 15:27Speaker 2: in the NFL on your defense Like that is insane.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Thanks for breaking in with that. Coming up, we'll have
- 15:33Speaker 1: more reaction to that. We'll talk about the Chris can't
- 15:36Speaker 1: believe it, Miles Garrette. They were already good.
- 15:42Speaker 2: They lost by Like it's not like, there's their secondary
- 15:45Speaker 2: was their issue and now you now you got Trent McDuffie,
- 15:48Speaker 2: you got a better secondary. You have the highest paid
- 15:50Speaker 2: cornerback or three time All Pro, and now you have
- 15:53Speaker 2: the defensive player.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Of the year. Like what.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Yeah, gregs I wish YouTube saw Greg's face of that
- 16:00Speaker 2: is interesting.
- 16:01Speaker 1: That is the Rams are loading up despite picking Ty
- 16:04Speaker 1: Simpson in the first round. They are absolutely loading up
- 16:07Speaker 1: for Matthew Stafford's age thirty seven, thirty eight years so.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Breaking news from multiple sources that the Cleveland Browns are
- 16:14Speaker 1: trading Miles Garrett past Rusher Extraordinary, the best pass Rushians
- 16:18Speaker 1: on the planet, to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared
- 16:22Speaker 1: Vers and half the franchise. Apparently we'll get more details
- 16:25Speaker 1: on what the other compensation is. But if you miss that,
- 16:27Speaker 1: we'll talk more about that. We'll talk about the Mariner's piggyback,
- 16:30Speaker 1: We'll talk about the Spurs. Mitch Johnson, how many texts
- 16:33Speaker 1: have you gotten? Greg?
- 16:33Speaker 2: I'm sure our group chats. You're in your son's probably
- 16:36Speaker 2: like Dad, look at this.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a cuple. My phone was beeping about
- 16:39Speaker 1: three minutes ago and I was looking down. I was like,
- 16:42Speaker 1: what's this about? Yep, and this is what this is about. Wow,
- 16:45Speaker 1: thank you Chris for that eleven o'clock. We're gonna talk
- 16:48Speaker 1: to the Spurs play by play guy from San Antonio
- 16:51Speaker 1: and all the Rams. Yeah, why not. Let's talk to
- 16:54Speaker 1: Les Schneid, Let's talk to Sean McVay, let's talk to
- 16:57Speaker 1: anybody on the Rams defense is pretty happy right now. Wow.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Apparently the report is that Miles Garrett going in a
- 17:03Speaker 1: trade from the Cleveland Browns to the Los Angeles Rams,
- 17:06Speaker 1: the Seahawks chief impediment.
- 17:08Speaker 2: To get back to the Super Bowl. This is gonna
- 17:10Speaker 2: be a fun game between these two teams. I can't wait.
- 17:12Speaker 2: It's a It's June. I'm like, oh, give me. Can
- 17:15Speaker 2: we make this the Week one game now, Ram versus Seahawks.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Screw the Super Bowl rematch, this would be week got
- 17:20Speaker 2: to wait till Christmas.
- 17:21Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, the Rams are definitely coming after the Seahawks,
- 17:25Speaker 1: that's for sure. Welcome back to the Greg Mellt Show
- 17:36Speaker 1: with Christopher k Live a ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Happy Monday to you. Breaking news in the NFL, multiple
- 17:44Speaker 1: reports now, Tom Pella Saro's in on it, Adam Schefter
- 17:48Speaker 1: and rapaport. The Cleveland Browns are trading two time NFL
- 17:52Speaker 1: Defensive Player of the Year Miles Garrett to the Los
- 17:56Speaker 1: Angeles Rams. The Rams are sending Jared Verse, a first
- 18:00Speaker 1: round pick next year, and a host of other picks
- 18:02Speaker 1: still to be feded out. It's not even been fifteen
- 18:07Speaker 1: months yet, Chris, and only one season. He hasn't even
- 18:10Speaker 1: played under the four year, one hundred and forty million
- 18:13Speaker 1: dollar extension at Miles Garrett signed with the Browns in
- 18:17Speaker 1: May of twenty twenty five. He still has four years
- 18:20Speaker 1: left on that deal. This is such a go for
- 18:24Speaker 1: it move for the Rams. Obviously. This is the age
- 18:26Speaker 1: thirty one season for Miles Garrett coming up in twenty
- 18:29Speaker 1: twenty six, but his salaries the way they've structured a
- 18:33Speaker 1: new contract the way the Browns game. They gave him
- 18:35Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty three million dollars one hundred and
- 18:37Speaker 1: twenty three and a half million dollars guaranteed in that deal,
- 18:42Speaker 1: but he hasn't even realized the first season of that
- 18:44Speaker 1: four year extension yet. His base salaries for the next
- 18:47Speaker 1: three seasons, including this one coming up, are just one
- 18:49Speaker 1: point three million dollars. And then in twenty twenty nine,
- 18:53Speaker 1: when he's thirty four, it jumps to thirty million is
- 18:55Speaker 1: base salary. So that's the structure. That's the tip point.
- 19:00Speaker 1: The Browns would figure they would restructure or release Miles
- 19:03Speaker 1: Garrett if he's playing those dived as he headed into
- 19:07Speaker 1: his mid thirties. Again this the Rams are going for
- 19:10Speaker 1: it with Matthew Stafford his age thirty seven, thirty eight
- 19:13Speaker 1: year old quarterback with a bad back, and they're going
- 19:17Speaker 1: for it. And Jared Ver Why would you have to
- 19:20Speaker 1: be Jared Verse right now? Cut it? I would be
- 19:23Speaker 1: So I'm just like, what what.
- 19:26Speaker 2: At least a team wants men want me?
- 19:30Speaker 3: Oh?
- 19:30Speaker 2: Man, that's that's a tough break. But I mean, hey,
- 19:33Speaker 2: you were part of the biggest trade in I don't
- 19:36Speaker 2: know who. Yeah, so I guess there's some that's something
- 19:40Speaker 2: to smile about.
- 19:41Speaker 1: They thought highly of me, man, So yes, you wonder
- 19:46Speaker 1: how the Rams can do this well? The Browns moved
- 19:50Speaker 1: around some contract milestone dates for bonuses for Miles Garrett
- 19:55Speaker 1: in this offseason. They were supposed to be doing March
- 19:58Speaker 1: and then they moved it around to the summer. Just
- 20:01Speaker 1: before the Sea at the end of training camp, some
- 20:03Speaker 1: milestone bonuses, and those bonuses having not yet kicked in,
- 20:07Speaker 1: made it easier for him to trade, made the Brown
- 20:10Speaker 1: easier for the Browns to trade Miles Garrett. And here
- 20:13Speaker 1: we're talking about AJ Brown from the Eagles to the
- 20:16Speaker 1: Patriots all spring post June one deal, and then on
- 20:19Speaker 1: June one, the morning of June one, we get word
- 20:21Speaker 1: it's Miles Garrett, not AJ Brown, the first huge superstar
- 20:25Speaker 1: traded post June one. So again, what's this post June
- 20:28Speaker 1: one have to do with it? Well, NFL Collective Bardney
- 20:31Speaker 1: Agreement allows teams to defer the remaining bonuses on a
- 20:36Speaker 1: contract across multiple years after June first. If you account
- 20:41Speaker 1: for that after June first, you can kick that can
- 20:44Speaker 1: down the road a couple of years. When you trade
- 20:46Speaker 1: a player, the trading team gets a salary cap acceleration
- 20:51Speaker 1: of the remaining peroration of the signing bonus onto its cap.
- 20:56Speaker 1: If you do it an account for it before June first,
- 20:58Speaker 1: all that excep ration becomes due now this year against
- 21:02Speaker 1: your cap. The Browns making this move after June first
- 21:05Speaker 1: means all their acceleration money of the signing bonus gets
- 21:09Speaker 1: kicked on to successive seasons and they can spread it out.
- 21:13Speaker 1: He had a twenty one million dollars signing bone. So
- 21:15Speaker 1: while he had one hundred and forty million dollar contract,
- 21:18Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty three and a half of it
- 21:19Speaker 1: guaranteed only twenty one million in signing bonus, So twenty
- 21:23Speaker 1: one million over four years. That's roughly five million dollars
- 21:26Speaker 1: a year. So the Browns acceleration is not going to
- 21:29Speaker 1: come do fifteen plus million dollars left on the pro
- 21:32Speaker 1: rated signing bonus for the next three years is not
- 21:34Speaker 1: going to come do all at once to them because
- 21:36Speaker 1: they waited till after June first. I hope it didn't
- 21:38Speaker 1: get you in the weeds on all that, but that's
- 21:40Speaker 1: the reason why June first is is a signature day
- 21:44Speaker 1: for these type of moves in the NFL, and the
- 21:46Speaker 1: size of the contracts win. But the text line already
- 21:50Speaker 1: four nine four to five one intocomatade text line already
- 21:52Speaker 1: lighting up with the Rams are just going for it. Obviously,
- 21:57Speaker 1: the four two five says the Seahawks are trade for first.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Now the Seahawks D line is good, I don't I
- 22:04Speaker 2: think it's just now the offensive line is gonna have
- 22:07Speaker 2: fun dealing with the Rams d line. I'm not saying
- 22:09Speaker 2: you couldn't add to it, but shout out to the Rams.
- 22:12Speaker 2: They're going for Yeah, they really are. I mean, at
- 22:14Speaker 2: this point, how can they not going defeated, Well, because they.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Have Seahawks on the schedule twice for one thing. But yeah,
- 22:20Speaker 1: that's so hard to do in the NFL. But yeah,
- 22:23Speaker 1: you're right, Chris. They address their biggest weakness in the secondary.
- 22:26Speaker 2: And now they just try. They just said, let's just
- 22:30Speaker 2: multiply and be even better.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Like, excuse me. The most the most game impacting position
- 22:35Speaker 1: on defense is rushing the quarterback obviously in this league,
- 22:38Speaker 1: and now they've got the best one in the league
- 22:41Speaker 1: doing it. The downside, of course, the one red flag
- 22:44Speaker 1: is that he's turning thirty one in his age thirty
- 22:47Speaker 1: one season, So how many more years are you going
- 22:49Speaker 1: to get defensive player of the Year type play from
- 22:51Speaker 1: Miles Garrett and the Rams obviously don't think he'll be.
- 22:56Speaker 1: They're not thinking about four years from now at the
- 22:58Speaker 1: end of this contract. They're thinking about right now when
- 23:00Speaker 1: he's aged thirty one, coming off two time defending Defensive
- 23:03Speaker 1: Player of the Year, the sack record and all of that.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Four com a Dodge text on your reaction to the Seahawks'
- 23:09Speaker 1: biggest rival, their biggest impediment to the Super Bowl acquiring
- 23:13Speaker 1: Miles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. The Rams getting Miles
- 23:16Speaker 1: Garrett in the trade from the Cleveland Browns. If you
- 23:17Speaker 1: missed it, that's the breaking news of the moment. Who
- 23:20Speaker 1: knows what else the morning will have in store for us.
- 23:24Speaker 1: This piggybag the most unpopular but yet successful thing going
- 23:28Speaker 1: for the first place. Mariners worked yesterday, Bryce Miller five innings,
- 23:33Speaker 1: one hit, only a single, no runs. It was like, okay,
- 23:37Speaker 1: they're going to take them. At least they didn't take
- 23:39Speaker 1: him out before the end of the fifth inning like
- 23:40Speaker 1: they did Castillo in Sacramento and costs Castillo a win.
- 23:43Speaker 1: You had him five winnings as a starter to qualify
- 23:46Speaker 1: for a win. The Mariners learned their lesson there. They
- 23:49Speaker 1: take Meller out after the fifth inning, and of course
- 23:53Speaker 1: Castillo comes in and a walk, a hit in a
- 23:56Speaker 1: wild pitch. Oh boy, and now we have something else?
- 24:00Speaker 1: Is just this is insane. I can't keep up. Yeah,
- 24:02Speaker 1: Emily Caplain of ESPN is reporting, go ahead.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Chris Melinda French Gates is joining the Seattle Kraken as
- 24:10Speaker 2: a minority investor. The move pairs one of the world's
- 24:14Speaker 2: most influential philanthropics and philanthropists and business leaders with Cracken
- 24:20Speaker 2: majority owner Samantha Holloway, one of the few women to
- 24:24Speaker 2: serve as an NHL principal owner.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Wow, this is from Emily Caplain of ESPN, there NHL
- 24:30Speaker 1: hockey reporter. But okay, Melinda Gates, you talk about, oh, yes,
- 24:40Speaker 1: a whale of an investor, literally a whale, one of
- 24:43Speaker 1: the richest people in the world. I'm pretty sure she's
- 24:47Speaker 1: joining I haven't read the story. I'm pretty sure she's
- 24:50Speaker 1: joining One Sports, One Roof Sports and Entertainment, which is
- 24:52Speaker 1: the umbrella organization that Samantha Halloway has created not only
- 24:57Speaker 1: to own the Kraken, not only to run Climate Pledgerina,
- 25:00Speaker 1: but guess what, to own the Sonics when they come back.
- 25:04Speaker 1: So I'm reading this to be Melinda Gates is going
- 25:06Speaker 1: to be heavily involved in the ownership of not only
- 25:09Speaker 1: the Kracking, but of the Sonics. And does that not
- 25:12Speaker 1: give heft to One Roof's bid to be the Sonics
- 25:17Speaker 1: owner when and if the NBA approves that this year,
- 25:21Speaker 1: You've got one of the richest people in the world.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Now back and you own the arena that is ready
- 25:25Speaker 1: made for the NBA. Here in Seattle, they built Oakview
- 25:30Speaker 1: Group Todd Lay, Wickie's brother, the group built climate Pledge
- 25:34Speaker 1: arena and NBA specifications for this happenstance. And now they've
- 25:37Speaker 1: got Melinda Gates behind it. Wow, she'll probably be a
- 25:44Speaker 1: primary financier of the Sonics bid. I cannot imagine that
- 25:47Speaker 1: they would Samantha Holloway would bring her under one Sports
- 25:51Speaker 1: and Entertainment and say, well, don't worry about the Sonics thing.
- 25:53Speaker 1: We got this. This is definitely not just the crack
- 25:56Speaker 1: and but Emily Kaplan is a hockey writer, so she's
- 25:59Speaker 1: writing for from the cracking perspective. But the bigger story
- 26:02Speaker 1: here in Seattle to me about this is that Melinda
- 26:05Speaker 1: Gates just joined the Sonics Investment Group. And if there
- 26:10Speaker 1: are indeed multiple bids for the Sonics, how can you
- 26:14Speaker 1: not think that, if you're an NBA owner and the
- 26:16Speaker 1: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, that the Samantha Hallaway Melinda Gates
- 26:20Speaker 1: bid is stronger than anybody else's. Not only is she
- 26:23Speaker 1: one of the richest women and whichest people in the world.
- 26:25Speaker 1: They own the arena that's already ready made to start planning.
- 26:30Speaker 1: So that's breaking news number two. Or what else we
- 26:32Speaker 1: got and we eat ted Copplelan here can you go
- 26:35Speaker 1: another hour? Ten minutes after Miles Garrett reports of Miles
- 26:39Speaker 1: Garrett breaking news reported Miles Garrett traded from the brand
- 26:43Speaker 1: the Bronze to the Rams for Jared Vers, a first
- 26:46Speaker 1: round pick and a bunch of other things. Ten minutes later,
- 26:49Speaker 1: Emily Kaplin of ESPN Chris is now breaking in with
- 26:53Speaker 1: the hockey writer for ESPN reporting that Melinda Gates is
- 26:57Speaker 1: joining excuse me one roof Sports and Entertainment as a
- 27:01Speaker 1: minority investor. She joins about a half dozen high profile
- 27:05Speaker 1: minority investor David Bonderman, Marshawn Lynch. But if she's joining
- 27:10Speaker 1: one Roo Sports Entertainment, Melinda Gates is going to be
- 27:13Speaker 1: instrumental in the bid to get the Sonics back to Seattle.
- 27:16Speaker 1: And that is the carrot to the NBA of saying, here,
- 27:21Speaker 1: approve our bid. We got we got it, we got
- 27:24Speaker 1: we got everybody on board. Here we go. Well, all
- 27:28Speaker 1: this is very interesting because there were some people that
- 27:31Speaker 1: were thinking that Melinda Gates might invest in the Seahawks. Oh,
- 27:36Speaker 1: by the way, the Super Bowl champions are still for sale.
- 27:39Speaker 1: There's a lot going on here, Chris, this is just insane.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I don't breaking show of record.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe the Seahaws make a trade in the next
- 27:50Speaker 2: twenty minutes.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I'm like, Holy moly, the Seahawks for Jared Verse. According
- 27:54Speaker 1: to the Fortunes movie.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Man, that would be like, okay, all right, look at that.
- 27:58Speaker 2: You're back in the NFC west Man. Wow, Well, shout
- 28:03Speaker 2: out to miss Gates. There it is, man, This is yeah.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Emily if you missed it. Emily Kaplan on ESPN dot
- 28:10Speaker 1: com reporting that Melinda Gates is becoming an investor in
- 28:14Speaker 1: the Kraken in one Sports, One roof Sports and Entertainment,
- 28:18Speaker 1: Samantha holloways, organization that will run not only the Crack
- 28:22Speaker 1: and not only climb a Pledge, Aina, but be the
- 28:24Speaker 1: Bitter for the Sonics. A bitter and I would think
- 28:28Speaker 1: now the most attractive bitter. And you talk about a
- 28:31Speaker 1: whale coming into beach on Seattle Center. Melinda Gates is
- 28:37Speaker 1: now part of the investment group for One roof Sports
- 28:40Speaker 1: and Entertainment. That is big news here in Seattle coinciding
- 28:46Speaker 1: with other big news that the seahawks chief rival, the
- 28:48Speaker 1: Rams just got Miles Garrett in a trade from Cleveland. Man,
- 28:53Speaker 1: where do we start? We could do both, you know
- 28:56Speaker 1: what we should do?
- 28:57Speaker 2: We should go to a break and try to put
- 28:58Speaker 2: all this in two words for the next segment.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I guess coming up. We'll react to this and more.
- 29:05Speaker 1: What it means for the Sonics, what it means for
- 29:07Speaker 1: the Kraken, what it means for the Seahawks, All of
- 29:09Speaker 1: Seattle's teams all at one time. On a breaking news
- 29:13Speaker 1: Monday on ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back to
- 29:21Speaker 1: the Greg Belt Show at Christopher Kid Live on ninety
- 29:23Speaker 1: three point three KJRFM. What's going to happen next? Within
- 29:27Speaker 1: the last half hour, the Cleveland Browns have agreed to
- 29:31Speaker 1: trade Miles Garrett, the two time defensive player of the Year,
- 29:33Speaker 1: to the Los Angeles Rams, giving the Seahawks something else
- 29:36Speaker 1: to deal with in the NFC West and their hope
- 29:38Speaker 1: to get back to the Super Bowl. And then ten
- 29:40Speaker 1: minutes after that, Emily Kaplan of ESPN, the hockey reporter
- 29:45Speaker 1: ringside reporter for ESPNO, is about to cover has been
- 29:49Speaker 1: covering the Stanley Cup Playoffs heading to the Stanley Cup Final.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Emily Kaplan reporting that Melinda French Gates is joining One
- 29:57Speaker 1: roof Sports and Entertainment's ownership group of not only the Kraken,
- 30:01Speaker 1: not only Climate Pledge Arena, but that group that's going
- 30:04Speaker 1: to make a bid for the Sonics. This is the
- 30:06Speaker 1: first time that one of the richest people in the world,
- 30:09Speaker 1: Melinda French Gates, is owning a sports team of any kind.
- 30:13Speaker 1: She told ESPN. Melinda French Gates did quote, I see
- 30:16Speaker 1: this incredible opportunity that sports plays for community, to bring
- 30:20Speaker 1: people together. When I met Samantha Halloway that is, and
- 30:24Speaker 1: learned about her leadership, her background in tech, and her
- 30:27Speaker 1: innovative ways she approaches challenges, it felt like a natural
- 30:30Speaker 1: fit for me. It's just time, French Gates told Emily
- 30:34Speaker 1: Kaplin of ESPN of investing in sports, what you're seeing
- 30:37Speaker 1: is a generation of women coming through into their full power.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I've walked into tough rooms and being one of the
- 30:41Speaker 1: few is very hard. Once we can create enough of
- 30:45Speaker 1: that we're one of many, it just gets easier. She
- 30:48Speaker 1: also talked about one roof Sports and Entertainment and about
- 30:53Speaker 1: the future of sports in Seattle, and Samantha Halloway is
- 30:59Speaker 1: talking about the same thing, specifically about the Sonic. Samantha
- 31:02Speaker 1: Halloway to Emily capin a ESPN upon bringing on Melinda
- 31:06Speaker 1: French Gates as an investor in the Kraken and in
- 31:09Speaker 1: one roos Sports and Entertainment, Samantha Halloway told Emily capin quote,
- 31:12Speaker 1: the city of Seattle certainly could use an NBA team,
- 31:15Speaker 1: and the fans are here ready for it. If that happens,
- 31:18Speaker 1: they will all buy their cracking friends beers because it
- 31:20Speaker 1: wouldn't happen without them. So we are hopeful. We are
- 31:24Speaker 1: working on it, and stay tuned. Make no mistake, Melinda
- 31:29Speaker 1: French Gates investing in one roof Sports and Entertainment is
- 31:32Speaker 1: a nod not only to a minority stake and owning
- 31:35Speaker 1: the Kraken, but in a minority stake in the bid,
- 31:39Speaker 1: perhaps even larger than minority stake in a bid to
- 31:42Speaker 1: the NBA to bring the Sonics back in a couple
- 31:45Speaker 1: of years. That vote is supposed to happen potentially by
- 31:48Speaker 1: the fall and the end of announced potentially by the
- 31:51Speaker 1: end of the year. And I mentioned there was talk
- 31:55Speaker 1: in some business circles in NFL circles that Melinda French
- 31:58Speaker 1: Gates might be interested in becoming an investor in bidding
- 32:01Speaker 1: for the Seahawks. That's someone who the ten billion dollar
- 32:05Speaker 1: price tag for the Seahawks wouldn't phase at all. But
- 32:09Speaker 1: now she's investing instead on the Kraken a minority owner
- 32:14Speaker 1: of one sports roof in entertainment, and almost assuredly yes,
- 32:18Speaker 1: she will be a part of the Sonics the effort
- 32:19Speaker 1: to bring the Sonics back that Samantha Halloway is already chairing.
- 32:23Speaker 1: She already owns the building. It makes a very attractive
- 32:28Speaker 1: bid already very attractive, make it even more attractive to
- 32:31Speaker 1: the NBA to accept. So we had dual tracks here.
- 32:36Speaker 1: The Miles Garrett news to the Rams is, I mean
- 32:39Speaker 1: you talk about an all in move. That's the definition
- 32:42Speaker 1: of an all in move. And they didn't beat the
- 32:45Speaker 1: Seahawks when they had to. They lost to them on
- 32:47Speaker 1: of course the overtime game and the regular season that
- 32:50Speaker 1: ended up costing them the number one overall seed. In
- 32:52Speaker 1: that game, the Rams blowing a sixteen point lead to
- 32:55Speaker 1: the Seahawks here in Seattle on a Thursday night in December,
- 32:58Speaker 1: is why the NFC Championship game was in Seattle and
- 33:01Speaker 1: not in Inglewood, and then the Seahawks winning that thirty
- 33:04Speaker 1: one to twenty seven in late January to get the
- 33:07Speaker 1: Super Bowl sixty. So the Rams think, if we just
- 33:09Speaker 1: beat the Seahawks, we're going to the Super Bowl. And
- 33:12Speaker 1: why not? I mean, that's so that's pretty clear that
- 33:16Speaker 1: the Rams have targeted the Seahawks. So they're bringing Miles
- 33:20Speaker 1: Garrett from Cleveland to run after Sam Darnold in their
- 33:23Speaker 1: two meetings, the first one being on Christmas Night here
- 33:26Speaker 1: in Seattle five to fifteen national TV NBC game, and
- 33:29Speaker 1: then the second one being in week eighteen, that could
- 33:31Speaker 1: decide the whole thing, including number one seed if the
- 33:34Speaker 1: two teams seasons go as they thinking that. But this
- 33:38Speaker 1: is an all in move. It's age thirty eight year
- 33:40Speaker 1: for Matthew Stafford. We detailed the contract situation for Miles
- 33:44Speaker 1: Garrett in his age thirty one season. They trade away
- 33:47Speaker 1: a top outside, one of the best, probably maybe the
- 33:50Speaker 1: best young edge rusher in the league, and Jared versu
- 33:53Speaker 1: is going to Cleveland as part of this deal. Your
- 33:56Speaker 1: reaction to all of this, does this make the Rams unbeatable?
- 33:59Speaker 1: As some of you on the tax liner, saying four
