- 0:51SPEAKER_01: If it's morning, afternoon, or evening, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to spend a few minutes with me.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: In today's topic, we're actually going to be discussing how to value yourself in the workplace.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: This uh topic actually came up with a few of my clients and just feeling undervalued in the workplace.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: And while oftentimes it can be how we are treated by others, there's also an element of how we are internalizing and making things mean things about ourselves.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: So when we are thinking about how to value ourselves in the workplace, it's recognizing that we all have things that we we might need to improve on.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: You know, just having a healthy understanding of what our strengths are and what our areas that need growth and improvement are.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Because when we have a clear understanding of that and we accept that certain things are strengths and certain things are areas of growth, we can leave room to make mistakes and also recognize that we can grow and we can improve.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: So if you struggle to see the value that you bring in your workplace, just know that you're not alone because a lot of us do experience limiting beliefs about our work, our worth and our competence from time to time.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: It's just that when the persistent limiting beliefs uh don't subside, right?
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: They they're persistent, they constantly pop up.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: That's when it can lead to self-sabotage or lead to um the inability to achieve certain goals because of the diminishing self-esteem.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: And because of those limiting beliefs taking hold, what ends up happening is you might hold yourself back without even realizing it.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Now, working in a toxic environment certainly does not help.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: So being poorly treated at work definitely makes it harder to even see your value.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: It's the same thing that happens in narcissistic dynamics or toxic dynamics.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Oftentimes, in those types of relationships, those individuals who are on the receiving end of that start to lose sight of their own value.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: So in an unhealthy work environment, it's commonplace for you to start doubting yourself and can be very damaging to your self-esteem.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: But learning how to value yourself can definitely improve your sense of self-worth.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: It can also start limiting those self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: A sense of self-worth and self-esteem really is what brings the value or really brings to the forefront and to the awareness the value that you bring every day.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: So a healthy sense of self-confidence definitely stems from just recognizing what your skills are, what your what your knowledge base is, and really taking ownership of that without feeling like you have to apologize for it.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: So a healthy sense of self-worth also involves just this awareness of the abilities that you do possess and your personal qualities that you bring to your workplace each and every day.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Having that strong sense of self-worth and belief in who you are, the essence of who you are, the worthiness of who you are is the baseline and foundation for really understanding what value you bring into the workplace.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: And those are the qualities that actually can lead to being recognized for leadership type positions.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: They can help help move your career forward, advance your career, and also in the end, allows you to feel like a contributing factor to your team and to your company's success.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Our sense of self-worth is not detached from outside factors, such as other people's opinions or uh career accomplishments.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: External factors definitely influence our self-perception.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: That's just how it is.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: I would love to say that external factors shouldn't have any deeming on how we perceive ourselves, but the way that the workplace works in our society is you get rewarded for those accomplishments.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So when others judge you or mistreat you, you may become more self-critical and see yourself as being imperfect or inadequate.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: If, for instance, you you're working really, really hard and there's no recognition, it can lead to burnout, and also you may think, start to believe that you don't actually bring value to your team or to your business.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And when the negative self-talk really amps up, that's when those distorted thoughts and distorted belief distorted beliefs about oneself can really take hold.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Some tips to remind yourself how to turn your towards yourself for validation and not towards others is to practice your own affirmations about yourself.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Recognize the difference between flaws, your flaws and your worth, or your mistakes and your worth.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: They're not the same thing.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: We all as humans make mistakes.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: It's a question of do we choose to learn from them?
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Just observe, right?
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Recognize that a mistake is just an event that didn't go the way that we wanted it to.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: So observe that.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Ask yourself, how can I grow from this?
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: How can I learn from this?
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Work on your own personal development, how you talk to yourself, self-compassion.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And then focus on your goals and practicing gratitude each and every day for not just what you're doing at work, but also how you're choosing to show up.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: So learning to value yourself and recognize your personal achievements definitely can attribute to your own self-worth and this the way that you you see your self-worth.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Now, I will often say that we cannot define our self-worth through the accomplishments that we have made.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: However, the accomplishments that we are able to acquire or get to definitely can add a layer of feeling, feeling as though we are advancing, we are growing.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: So being able to see the successes we have, the wins that we have, and celebrate those.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Recognizing that our strengths can actually help complement and lift up those areas where we might feel weaker, setting boundaries around what you're willing to put on your plate versus, you know, just saying, I can add more, because sometimes what happens is we're trying so hard to prove our worth in our workplace.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: We keep saying, yes, yes, yes, I can add more and more to my plate, and before we know it, we're burnt out.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: And that can take away from the our self-worth and the value that we see that we bring to the table.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: So it's about recognizing what boundaries we need to set in order to manage our workflow.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, being open to feedback, being able to accept constructive criticism and recognize that it's not a comment on your worth, but actually the feedback itself could be a way that you can grow and you can continue to expand and learn.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, there's this idea of understanding that productivity and busyness are not the same thing.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: So oftentimes in today's, you know, go, go, go world, we equal there's this idea that if you're not busy, you must be lazy.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Or, you know, the people that aren't scheduled from 8 a.m.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: until 6 p.m.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: have a sense that there's a sense of laziness about them.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: And it's just recognizing that busyness does not necessarily mean that you're actually being more productive.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Busyness can sometimes actually be um, you know, just generate stress, anxiety, frustration, and actually can keep you from completing the work that you actually want to do.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: So when we're looking at how do we see our value in the workplace, it's not to just look to how busy we are, but how productive we're being and then recognizing ourselves for the productivity that we are producing.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Working in a stressful environment can definitely, again, cause ourselves some emotional self-harm as well as just take a hit to our self-worth.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: So just really doing that inner work, really paying attention to how you speak to yourself, practicing self-compassion, recognizing that it's about how you celebrate your wins and your growth, and not only looking to external forces are a really important factor in recognizing the value that you bring to your workplace.
