- 0:10All right, Good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon On a
- 0:13Wednesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent Condon, Ken
- 0:17Miller for the next two hours to talk sports with you.
- 0:20Thanks for starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:22Wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa or anywhere,
- 0:25certainly grateful that you are. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:27program. John Bowen Camp will join us
- 0:30Associated Press for John Iowa College hoops.com.
- 0:34We'll variety topics with Bowen camp as we normally do and he's
- 0:38coming up at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:40Hour number two, Cappy is standing in a pool with a drink
- 0:45with an umbrella, surrounded by palm trees.
- 0:47I have no idea where he is, but he's not Chicago.
- 0:51That I do know. I've been able to connect those
- 0:55dots. But Cappy will join us.
- 0:57I will talk. Well, I'll talk some Bulls.
- 0:59They're making some news, obviously, some bears, some
- 1:02Cubs. Chicago sports with Cappy.
- 1:04Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsor Cappy on a weekly basis.
- 1:07He'll kick off the second hour of the show.
- 1:09And then Vinnie I recovers the NFL for the Sporting News.
- 1:13Vinnie, we will join Trent tonight at 1:30.
- 1:15A little more on Super Bowl #60 which creeps closer each and
- 1:19every day. A Vinny Iron.
- 1:21Trent will make some play. Circus sports sponsor those that
- 1:24coming up about, oh, 10 minutes or so before 2:00 before we turn
- 1:27things over to the drive. Well, the Hawks take the floor
- 1:31hopefully tonight. Yeah, right.
- 1:34They've got a pretty good, pretty good idea that it will
- 1:37start and, you know, at some point in the 10:00 hour, but
- 1:39it's going to be a late 1. Trent, I'm surprised that I
- 1:42looked at the I looked at wager talk today at the point spread.
- 1:46I was surprised that I was not more of a favorite, really,
- 1:48honestly. Yeah, this I don't think this
- 1:50Washington team based on their resumes that good.
- 1:54I mean, Colorado beat them. Beat them.
- 1:55Manly, Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, I'll give you
- 1:59those three. And Purdue, 4 good Big 10 teams
- 2:03have got past them. They beat Ohio State, they've
- 2:06beaten Northwestern. Do they have another Big 10 win?
- 2:09I don't think that they do. They lost to Seattle.
- 2:13Seattle any good? Seattle good.
- 2:14Are they good? Yeah.
- 2:15They gave Ganzaga push in. They really did.
- 2:17Kennel, Yeah. OK, well maybe that loss isn't
- 2:20as bad as I made it out to be, but nonetheless, if I will,
- 2:23plays like they did against Oregon and Oregon and Washington
- 2:26did play and Washington beat Oregon pretty convincingly, so
- 2:29well, maybe it's accurate that point spread.
- 2:31I think more than anything, analytically, they're still fine
- 2:34during 46 in the country at Ken Palm.
- 2:36So this is not a drag like Oregon was.
- 2:38That's a part of it. Secondly, the importance of this
- 2:40game for Washington, I think that needs to be factored in.
- 2:43They have very few opportunities, though.
- 2:45They have a lot of chances of wins, not many for Quad One
- 2:49victory. And that's something that they
- 2:50need. The resume I think are reading a
- 2:52few Washington things this week. This one's kind of circled for
- 2:54them. Is it?
- 2:54They know the importance of what this is for them to get a
- 2:57victory at home against a Quad One team like Iowa is.
- 3:01You know, Trent, that's a great point because I'm looking at the
- 3:03rest of their schedule after this game.
- 3:05UCLA, Penn State, Minnesota, Maryland, Rutgers, Wisconsin,
- 3:08USC, Oregon. Yeah, not a whole lot there, not
- 3:12in terms of quality. And at the end, Wisconsin and
- 3:14USC, those would be good wins. Yep, good wins, but this is
- 3:17going to be up there and maybe their best win of the season if
- 3:19they can pull it off against Iowa.
- 3:21You couple that with the match up and this is a big team.
- 3:24Yeah, a couple of 611 dudes. Steinbach is a stunt.
- 3:27He's really, really freshman. Yes, Yeah, though I mean, a
- 3:30freshman in name only, but he's really, really talented and they
- 3:34play two big guys together at 6 foot 11.
- 3:37Then you throw into the fact we'll see about Tavion Banks or
- 3:39whatever this injury is, has to be at minimum concerning.
- 3:43He's been their second best player through the course of
- 3:45most of this season and even as good as fool Garris has been the
- 3:48last couple of times out and what we saw from Hassan and some
- 3:51of the other bench options that they have, Tavion Banks is an
- 3:53incredibly important part. Not just knocking down an open
- 3:56three. It is free throws as we know
- 3:57about, we talked about, but a versatile defender.
- 4:01He can guard some big guys, he can go the other way and he can
- 4:03guard some guys on the wing. So you take that kind of part of
- 4:06it out of the equation. Sounds like he's going to try to
- 4:08make it a goal. We'll see what he looks like and
- 4:11what just how effective he's going to be.
- 4:13But I think there's a lot of factors here.
- 4:15This. I have the same feeling that I
- 4:18did in the matchup on the women's side Thursday against
- 4:21USC. Just have a feeling things are
- 4:24not going to go well for Iowa in this one.
- 4:27How? Important is Fulgaris being that
- 4:29you know, he's the guy that has the height on the roster.
- 4:31Yeah, he's gonna have to probably play a ton.
- 4:33And will that hurt him? Will that hurt his offensive
- 4:35production, do you think? Well, if it's down a little bit,
- 4:38could you not make the excuse? But can you, you know, connect
- 4:41the dots? The reason why?
- 4:42Perhaps 'cause you're gonna have to focus on those two bigs.
- 4:45Well, and I think you're gonna need more, man.
- 4:46Wow. I mean, you're gonna need to use
- 4:47him more than the limited minutes that we saw.
- 4:50What's? Behind that, 'cause he's limited
- 4:51most, most games, he's limited it.
- 4:53Comes out as a starter, right And then?
- 4:55Certainly doesn't play starter minutes.
- 4:57But that was the same thing last year, Drake.
- 4:59I mean, you look at the back half of the season and he played
- 5:02in the NCAA tournament, 18 minutes against Tech, 19 minutes
- 5:05against Missouri, played eleven in a game towards the end of the
- 5:08season against Missouri State and ten against Evansville.
- 5:10So that's been, I don't know if it's just McComb kind of
- 5:13seasonality. He doesn't have it tonight.
- 5:14We're going to go a different direction.
- 5:15What it is, Obviously he knows him incredibly well, but I think
- 5:18they're going to need him tonight.
- 5:19They might need Trevor Dirac tonight, you know, for a 4
- 5:22minute stretch might need to get him out there and foul trouble
- 5:25starts to hit whatever it is. Or just the two big guys are
- 5:27dominate and need more size. I wouldn't be shocked to see
- 5:30your rock out there under a time out, something like that in the
- 5:33first half. He gets a little bit of run.
- 5:35It just has that weird, odd feeling to me that this one,
- 5:39after how good it looked on Sunday night, not going to go
- 5:41the same direction. Well, they're they certainly
- 5:43protect the rim. Washington does say a lot of
- 5:45blocks between those two bigs. We'll we'll see where it goes as
- 5:49I was somewhat, you know, size challenge in the basketball
- 5:52game. Don Mcclaney was the color guy
- 5:55on Sunday night. He's back again.
- 5:56Oh, is he? Yeah, I know he's doing the
- 5:58color. I saw he was doing the play by
- 5:59play. I don't remember the dude's
- 6:01name. But regardless of that.
- 6:02And then they got one other guy, right.
- 6:06Zoom, zoom. Yeah, Zoom Scooter.
- 6:09I knew it was a name that was like fast.
- 6:12Zoom, zoom, yeah, zoom Diallo he he's a nice player.
- 6:15Also look at a couple of things that they do well.
- 6:20They don't force a ton of turnovers.
- 6:23Iowa can't afford to be in that, you know, 13 to 15 range that
- 6:26they've been a couple of times. I think that's a one that you
- 6:29look at. They don't shoot it very well,
- 6:31shoot it much better though at home.
- 6:32So a lot of different factors here.
- 6:35We'll see on this one. Late night tip absolutely love
- 6:38getting this one just like I love when the twins go out to
- 6:40the West Coast, you know, for their tripper a couple of times
- 6:43and. 31st pitch. Yes, those are good ones for me.
- 6:46And this is 1. I know a lot of people don't
- 6:47like it for me. You always talk about what it's
- 6:49good for you. This one's good.
- 6:51For me, no, it is. It's your turn, your turn.
- 6:53I've had more than my more than my share.
- 6:55No doubt about that. You mentioned your twins.
- 6:58Your twins are joining as well as a number of teams.
- 7:01What's going on with the television rights when it when
- 7:04it comes to the NBA, it's all going to are the NBA the the
- 7:07MLB. It sounds like MLBTV is going to
- 7:10be home for a lot of these. So what does that mean for
- 7:13DIRECTV? It's a great question and I
- 7:15don't know the answer. And I will be completely honest,
- 7:19I've had DIRECTV for the better part of, well, 20 years just on
- 7:22my own. I think we'll go away from
- 7:26DIRECTV if the twins are not. Available.
- 7:28You know what, Trent? I hate to say it but I'm
- 7:29starting to feel the same way you are and I never.
- 7:31Thought I never did either. I never thought that was going
- 7:34to be the case. Being if if I buy the baseball
- 7:37package, I gotta have it. I love it, but if I'm going to
- 7:39be able to watch, you know, them all on the Internet anyways, if
- 7:43I'm going to have to go there, I mean as well get used to it
- 7:45swallow hard. Look, that's where I watch all
- 7:47my hockey now, because I want to watch the Canadian broadcast of
- 7:50whatever game, right. If they're if The Jets are
- 7:52playing, obviously, or if it's a Canadian team, I got nothing
- 7:55else to watch. I'm going to go to ESPN plus
- 7:57because DIRECTV does not offer those feeds anymore.
- 8:01So I think I'm headed in that direction.
- 8:03And where do where do we get the N?
- 8:05Where do we get the NFL? The Internet on the Internet,
- 8:08right, YouTube TV, and I think that's probably where we'll end
- 8:12up if that's the case and you have to get a different
- 8:14direction. Now there's been talk about ESPN
- 8:17buying these rights to all these different teams, the Padres, the
- 8:20Rangers, the Twins, the Cardinals, Cardinals, yes, the
- 8:23Bally's that once was and the Fox Sports before that and now
- 8:26FanDuel TV, and that looks to be going away.
- 8:29So with all these different components, I think it's just
- 8:31kind of a wait and see process and how this plays out.
- 8:33But if it's not on DIRECTV? I know.
- 8:35It's why are we paying the hundreds of dollars a.
- 8:37Month I don't get it and I'm. Over 3 bills.
- 8:39I don't watch movie channels. I don't either pay for them, not
- 8:42sure why. Right.
- 8:43If I do, it's something on HBO Max that you pay for.
- 8:47Now you got Netflix, now you got Peacock and Hulu.
- 8:51We got Hulu and all these different components.
- 8:53In fact, since we have Hulu, it's part of our package.
- 8:56I think we get through our cable or our phone bill through
- 8:59Verizon. It's all packaged together for
- 9:01like 9 bucks a month and we get Disney Plus, ESPN Plus and Hulu,
- 9:06but not Hulu with live TV. Maybe we can just add the live
- 9:10TV component to it and we'd be good on that front, but it's a
- 9:13changing market. Oh.
- 9:14My God. And you're not kidding.
- 9:15I mean, look at the newspaper business.
- 9:16Did Washington Post just closed through sports section?
- 9:19Awful. I mean, unbelievable, right?
- 9:23But we're seeing it everywhere. Major, major newspapers.
- 9:26We just consume the media different ways.
- 9:28Speaking of that, we got cameras being installed in studio here.
- 9:31How about? That yes, yes, we're evolving as
- 9:34well. We are so, so within, I don't
- 9:37know, couple of weeks, a month, yeah.
- 9:39Oh yeah, it won't even be that long.
- 9:41I hope it have. I have it up and running by
- 9:43Monday. By Monday, yes.
- 9:45So you will be able to. We will.
- 9:47I mean, if the audience is so inclined, if they're sitting at
- 9:50their desk listening, whatever. You can actually watch the show
- 9:53now. Yeah.
- 9:53Watch all the shows now. Yeah, just.
- 9:55YouTube, KX&O Radio is where you can find it.
- 9:57You can find the YouTube page that's up there.
- 9:59We don't have any content yet because we haven't started yet,
- 10:01right? Have some testing still to go
- 10:02through and figure out but. I do see two cameras, yes, Yeah,
- 10:05we're one on my position, one on The Who sits over there.
- 10:09I think Alec is over there. Alec's over there.
- 10:12Lucas is over. Lucas is over.
- 10:13There, yes, I believe so. I'm never up in the morning,
- 10:16though. I might have to come in that
- 10:17first day and get the ball going on that one.
- 10:20But yeah, we'll have the video component to it as well.
- 10:22So you'll be able to see our ugly mugs as we're talking about
- 10:24things. And you can see Ken as he hoots
- 10:27and hollers. But during the commercial
- 10:28breaks, don't worry, you won't be on camera.
- 10:30You'll be good. Yes.
- 10:31Good, so you need to pick your nose.
- 10:33You'll be all right. Well, yeah.
- 10:35Do I do that? No.
- 10:37OK, good. Good.
- 10:39I want to ask you about another topic that's certainly getting
- 10:42and I'm in the minority. I understand it before I put
- 10:44that out there. I don't understand why I'm in
- 10:46the minority, but I am in the minority.
- 10:49Have you seen the college football schedule for the next
- 10:51two years? With the calendar, have I seen
- 10:53the calendar? The calendar?
- 10:56I have not. Where?
- 10:57Where did this come across? This was.
- 10:59This was released yesterday and again I don't understand why but
- 11:06here we are. The championship game will be
- 11:09played the week of the the NFL Championship games.
- 11:16The final college football game of the year is January the 25th.
- 11:20Good God. See, I I told you I'm in the
- 11:22minority. I don't understand why there's
- 11:25such pushback on this. There's.
- 11:26Pushback because people. Are out, ready to move on from
- 11:29from. Football.
- 11:30No. They're ready to move on from
- 11:31college football. The NFL takes so much oxygen.
- 11:35It takes everything did. It this year you think it did?
- 11:39For, but it was also the. Miami, Indiana championship game
- 11:41numbers. Were good.
- 11:42Numbers were good, but you put that thing a little bit earlier.
- 11:46We saw it a year ago in Ohio State Notre Dame Game A.
- 11:49Year ago I agree with. You and it was pushed back just
- 11:52like it will be in the next calendar year for 20/26/27.
- 11:56It's going to be pushed back. And because of that, I don't
- 11:59agree with it. Obviously we're going to be
- 12:01watching. But when you have two blue
- 12:03bloods facing off in the national championship game and
- 12:05you get disappointing numbers, I think that tells you all you
- 12:08need to know. People have checked out.
- 12:10They are NFL only at that point. I'm fine with it.
- 12:14We're fine with it and I'm sure in this market it's going to be
- 12:17OK. And selfishly, that's how I look
- 12:19at it because it's content for us.
- 12:20And he keeps talking college football till the end of July.
- 12:23Here's the crazy thing. Well, one of the many crazy
- 12:26things about it, the mathematical halfway point from
- 12:30the from the start of college football to the national
- 12:32championship game is Week 11. Week 11 We're at the halfway
- 12:39point of college football. So we're going to have the
- 12:42quarterfinals on January 1st, the semi finals and the.
- 12:46Rose Bowl does not and and wanted to stay as a
- 12:49quarterfinal. They did not want to give up
- 12:50January 1st. Good for them.
- 12:53Yep, dig in your heels. They are and.
- 12:55Then the semi finals. And if the change needs to
- 12:58happen, kick them to the curb. I agree there too.
- 13:00The semi finals would be the Thursday and Friday 14th and
- 13:0415th. That's wild card weekend which
- 13:06was late this year. This coming year and then the
- 13:09championship game will be played on January the 25th at Allegiant
- 13:15Stadium. So that is a Monday for the
- 13:17championship. Yep.
- 13:19Interesting. We're going to have this for the
- 13:23next year. And the following year, the next
- 13:24two. Well, are we sure?
- 13:26Yes, they've they've apparently locked in the next two years
- 13:30because the championship game the next year will be played on
- 13:33the 24th as the calendar moves. Same kind of same kind of of
- 13:37spot weeks wise in January. It's still going to go late.
- 13:40But I don't know. I'm always for more.
- 13:43Football's good for business and that's how I've always looked at
- 13:48it. But you know, anyways, I know
- 13:50I'm in the minority. People are pissed off at this.
- 13:52Like really disappointed. They can be pissed.
- 13:54I'm going to watch of. Course we are, and I think most
- 13:57people would too. But I guess it is what it is.
- 14:01And our audience is different, too.
- 14:02I mean, you're huge sports fans. You're right.
- 14:03Sports Radio. But the but the blowback I'm
- 14:06hearing of people that are in this business.
- 14:08Well, then they're just looking for something to complain.
- 14:09About I, I guess, right. I mean, what, what do they want
- 14:12to do? One other thing I want to take a
- 14:13minute here because this was this was my favorite baseball
- 14:16player as a kid. I think I've said the name
- 14:18Mickey Lolich. Before.
- 14:20He died today at 85 years of age, back in 1968.
- 14:26I'm nine years old. Right.
- 14:27And And I'd like Koufax. He retired.
- 14:29He was about to retire. My guys were Sandy Koufax, Carl
- 14:33Yastremsky and. And Mickey Lolich.
- 14:36And Mickey Lolich was a Detroit Tiger, and they played the
- 14:39Cardinals in the World Series. That was the year Danny McLain
- 14:42won 31 games. And Danny Mclain's getting all
- 14:45the accolades, as you should, won 31 games.
- 14:47But the number 2 in that rotation was a guy by the name
- 14:49of Mickey Lolich. A kind of built like you.
- 14:52OK. Kind of built like you.
- 14:53Squatty. Yeah.
- 14:53Squatty. Some people say fat, but they're
- 14:56me. No, no, no, that's me.
- 14:57He was a Mickey Lowlich was squatty and Mickey Lowlich did
- 15:01what I don't think will ever be broken, a record that'll ever be
- 15:04broken again in baseball. He threw, he pitched complete
- 15:09games, winning efforts in games 25 and seven of the World Series
- 15:16to beat Bob Gibson in Game 7 and the Saint Louis, the vaunted
- 15:19Saint Louis Cardinals. But Can you imagine that?
- 15:21Complete games in game two, game five and Game 7.
- 15:26And he died today at 85 years of age.
- 15:28But he was one of my favorites as a kid and just goes to show
- 15:31you, right, that everybody's got an expiration date.
- 15:35And today's was Mickey Lolich. Mickey Lolich, one of your
- 15:38favorite? He was as a kid, yeah, as a kid,
- 15:39Mickey Lola. And I don't know why, just maybe
- 15:41because his look, because he didn't look like a like an
- 15:44athlete. Yep.
- 15:45But I love the guy. I love the guy.
- 15:47Anyways, he is gone last night. As I was watching some games, I
- 15:53was also calling a couple. Of oh, you had a dinger, you had
- 15:56a court. Rush we did yes, it it was a
- 15:59really fun scene. So walkie against Walkie
- 16:01Northwest last night at the old field house, the original
- 16:04school, if you will, for walkie and they call.
- 16:07They call it the Old Field House now.
- 16:09Probably, Yeah, it's probably trending that direction.
- 16:12Big Jim, really, I love the vantage point there.
- 16:16It's one of my favorite environments for basketball.
- 16:18And it was. Regardless of opponent.
- 16:21Yeah, jam packed, I mean just absolutely filled to the gills,
- 16:24standing room only there was people and see people coming up
- 16:27the aisle looking for seats. I mean it was absolutely packed
- 16:30on both sides as you'd imagine as the schools are 5 miles away
- 16:33from each other. It was an incredible
- 16:36environment, as good as a high school environment.
- 16:38I think as you're going to find is what we saw last night in
- 16:40Waukee #2 verse #3. So you got the top five billing
- 16:44that also went along with it when they played earlier this
- 16:46season back in December. Northwest just blew him out of
- 16:49the gym, ran away and hid in that one.
- 16:51Waukee last night played incredibly well.
- 16:54Evan Jacobson in the future Texas A&M Aggie, he was
- 16:57tremendous in a three pointer that tied it up late in
- 16:59regulations. Is he?
- 17:00Having a good year. He is, yeah.
- 17:01He's playing really well, battling inside against a guy on
- 17:05his way over to Illinois and Landon Davis.
- 17:07I mean, you think of this walkie Northwest team, Landon Davis,
- 17:09Illinois, Colin Rice, Nebraska. Then you have Mack Heitlin, who
- 17:14very well could be AD One quarterback on that squad.
- 17:17Is that? Good, yeah.
- 17:18Isaiah Oliver, he's small. That's going to be the knock
- 17:20against him and I don't know if he'll get to that level, but in
- 17:22terms of our arm talent, he definitely has that.
- 17:24Isaiah Oliver, the son of Dean Oliver, he's gone on on to the
- 17:27University of Iowa as a walk on wide receiver.
- 17:30They're absolutely loaded, but walk, he was right there and my
- 17:33favorite player out there, he was the littlest guy on the
- 17:35floor. He's listened to 510 and he's
- 17:37510, not 510, was Max Roach. He was tremendous getting to the
- 17:41rim going up against a couple of those behemas.
- 17:44He was really, really fun to watch.
- 17:46He is so Walkie's got 4 seniors in the starting lineup in a
- 17:49sophomore on the other side, 3 senior starters for Walkie
- 17:52Northwest. But that environment, absolutely
- 17:54amazing. Walkie gets it done in OTA.
- 17:56Fun one. And those are the ones that you
- 17:59just hope you get, you know, from time to time throughout the
- 18:01course of the year, something like that.
- 18:03Want to give a shout out to everybody out there at Walkie.
- 18:06I think we're going to see both of those teams in the state
- 18:08tournament. You do good.
- 18:09Yeah, that'd be that'd be great. So so help me with at the
- 18:12calendar here. Where are we as far as.
- 18:15We are winding down the regular season so.
- 18:18So the girls will be done first on this, yes.
- 18:20They they end a week before all the boys do.
- 18:23So in terms of the regular season there is 2 weeks left
- 18:26week and 1/2 or 2 1/2 weeks left right in that range.
- 18:29End of the regular season is February 17th for the boys side.
- 18:32Before we get into sub state play at the 4A level you have
- 18:35the what is it? They match up, the top six teams
- 18:39go up, so you have the match ups there and move on.
- 18:42Top 2 seeds in each of the sub states get a buy into the semi
- 18:46final round, but we'll get to that state tournament one final
- 18:49time this year at Wells Fargo Arena before it makes its way to
- 18:52Ames next season. And the breaks for a second
- 18:55rewind, Yeah, Where's it going to be played?
- 18:58Oh dude, I said. Jack Trice medal.
- 19:00No, no, no, you said for one last time at Wells Fargo.
- 19:03Oh yes, the Casey Center. Yes.
- 19:06Yeah, it still. Yeah.
- 19:07Still takes a while, doesn't it? Old habits.
- 19:10I drive by it every day so I OK so maybe.
- 19:12That it really sticks in. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:14When you're making your way down to Ankeny.
- 19:16So I'll be there three times over the next month or so.
- 19:18State wrestling coming up here in a couple of weeks.
- 19:20After that, girls state basketball and then wrapping
- 19:23things up with a boys state basketball tournament.
- 19:26Unbelievable. Just goes so fast that does.
- 19:28And then a couple of would take, what, about six weeks off and
- 19:31you're back to call in baseball? Yes.
- 19:33Which would be here before we know it as well.
- 19:35OK, good stuff. Take a time out.
- 19:38Where's the keyword? Right here.
- 19:40Head to KX and o.com. This nationwide contest the
- 19:44keyword, your chance to win $1000.
- 19:47By the way, the keyword this hour is money.
- 19:49Money at KX and o.com, your chance to win $1000.
- 19:53Head to KX and o.com, a pop up box will appear.
- 19:56Type the keyword money, money at KX and o.com, your chance to win
- 20:01$1000. More opportunity throughout the
- 20:03afternoon. Trenton, I have another one and
- 20:05then coming up off the. Bench they will have them as
- 20:08well throughout the afternoon nowhere in Condon underway Cappy
- 20:13and our number 2 he'll kick things off then Vinny Iyer on
- 20:16the Sporting News. How about props wise Have you
- 20:19have you delve into it? Have you, have you found some
- 20:22you're going to play? Yeah.
- 20:24So we started, we had our television show earlier today.
- 20:26So that was really my first deep dive into the prop market.
- 20:30And it's deep. It's crazy.
- 20:33I think it's there's more every year.
- 20:34Yes, it just keeps stacking on top of each other.
- 20:37One that I found that I was really surprised by the coin
- 20:40toss you can find -101 on either side.
- 20:43I'd play tails seemingly every single time.
- 20:46But there's one the Seahawks, they're the visitor.
- 20:48So they get to call heads or tails, right?
- 20:51Will, what will the Seahawks call during the coin toss?
- 20:54We think it'd be, what, 5050, right?
- 20:55Right. It'd be the same thing.
- 20:57Not the case. The heads is -500 that's crazy.
- 21:01Now, I haven't seen anything or found anything.
- 21:03If they've just called heads, maybe every time.
- 21:05Historical numbers? You mean like the trends?
- 21:07Or even just what it is this season or the.
- 21:09Seahawks. Or under McDonald if if that's
- 21:12the reason that they have called heads every time this year if
- 21:15that's the reason behind it. But regardless, 3 to one on them
- 21:19calling tails, it's like I'll gamble at the very least think I
- 21:23need to do a little bit more investigative.
- 21:25Work doesn't have to come tails. It's whatever the Seahawks call.
- 21:28They're, yeah, they're. Not that they have to win by
- 21:30calling tails. I mean like a two team parlay to
- 21:33make that happen. That's not the case in that one.
- 21:36Another one that I really like that I already got in the back
- 21:38pocket. Well, two player props first.
- 21:41DeMarco Lawrence. DeMarcus Lawrence over .25
- 21:45sacks. So if he just gets 1/2. 1/2 a
- 21:47sack. Half a sack and that is plus
- 21:49140. OK.
- 21:50Like that one. The other one that I really,
- 21:53really liked is cross sport. There's not a ton of them out
- 21:56there yet, really, but we'll get closer to this.
- 21:59Anthony Edwards for the Timberwolves.
- 22:01Points, rebounds and assists combined against Drake May's
- 22:04rushing yards. Drake May, best case is 50.
- 22:08I mean, I'd be shocked to see anything about more than that on
- 22:12the other side, and that's top level stuff if the Edwards can
- 22:16do that. Well, who's going to be his
- 22:17teammates? But but in that's another
- 22:19question. But in general, when you go
- 22:21through and you kind of look at the way that this is set up, I
- 22:24think that's really, really good on Edward.
- 22:26So I jumped aboard. Those are the two player props I
- 22:28got in the back pocket already. Yeah, I think the only one that
- 22:30I've considered, and I probably won't play because I don't like
- 22:32playing those things. Trayvion Henderson, if he
- 22:35catches a pass, he goes over it because it's it's it's a half a
- 22:39pass is the over under and the yardage is 2 1/2 yards.
- 22:43So. He catches a pass.
- 22:44You got to think he's going to pick up three, wouldn't you
- 22:46think? What?
- 22:47Wouldn't it be awful? One catch, 1 catch for one yard.
- 22:502nd and eight. And that's all he gets, and
- 22:54that's all he gets. Split the wager and you lose
- 22:57your juice. John Bowen, Camdex, Miller and
- 23:00Condon, glad you're with us. We're talking sports with you,
- 23:02and we'll do so until 2:00 on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:26Just past 1230, Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:29Network, Trent and I with you until 2:00.
- 23:32David Kaplan kicks off our number 2 Centurion Stone of Iowa
- 23:36sponsors Cappy Vinnieyer on Super Bowl 60.
- 23:39Right now, John Bowenkamp friend of the program.
- 23:42He joins us talk some Iowa hoops.
- 23:45Hello, John Bowenkamp, Trenton, Ken, how are you?
- 23:49I'm doing good, how you doing? You sounds like you're driving.
- 23:51Where are you? Well, I'm actually sitting in my
- 23:55car by the Fort Madison Amtrak depot, so we may get a train go
- 24:00by. Here, if we're if we're lucky.
- 24:02If we're lucky. Right, Good stuff anyway.
- 24:06Well, did you? Are you going to get a nap this
- 24:08afternoon? Do you have the AP recap for The
- 24:12Associated Press tonight? The Washington, IA game.
- 24:16No, but I will stay up. I always stay up till midnight
- 24:19anyway, so it gives it gives a nice I I was laughing when I saw
- 24:23that the game starts at 10:00 our time on that.
- 24:27But welcome to the big. Ten yeah, welcome to the Big 10
- 24:30indeed. So let's go back to the Oregon
- 24:32game before we kind of take a sneak peek to tonight.
- 24:35So many positive John that I took away from that game what
- 24:38was I don't have any concern with Banks and and his health
- 24:42going forward. But your thoughts as you look
- 24:44back to what happened on Sunday night?
- 24:47I just thought they just ran their offense very well the
- 24:50other night and, you know, you could go, you've been kind of
- 24:54seeing it, you know, at different times.
- 24:55But I thought from beginning to end, I thought that was a very
- 24:58good offensive game. And obviously defensively, too,
- 25:01I mean, I thought they were really good.
- 25:03Got good minutes out of Brandon Hostin, which they haven't, you
- 25:06know, been able to use him, you know, at times this year.
- 25:08But I thought he played well. Bennett Sturtz, Bennett Sturt
- 25:12and I I just thought it was a really good Rd.
- 25:15Win for this point of the Big 10 season because these are the
- 25:19games you know that you want to win if you want to be in that
- 25:22upper part of that league and and play on Thursday in the in
- 25:25the Big 10 tournament got to win these games.
- 25:27So yeah, I I really like how they started this little 2 game
- 25:32swing without they played Sunday night.
- 25:34This is the easy part of the Big 10 schedule, the most difficult
- 25:38of the next three tonight against Washington.
- 25:40We'll get to that game momentarily.
- 25:42But after Washington back home for Northwestern, road trip out
- 25:45to Maryland, who's just awful, and then your closing stretch,
- 25:48final seven games, six of them are going to be incredibly
- 25:51difficult games. You think this team's ready for
- 25:53that closing stretch starting on Valentine's against Purdue?
- 25:57To. You all signs say this Iowa
- 25:59team, they're ready for this, this closing stretch.
- 26:03I think so, you know, and I mean, I, I, I think, you know,
- 26:06you want to get tonight and, you know, Sunday could be
- 26:09interesting because they're not going to get back from, from
- 26:12Washington till, you know, early tomorrow morning at some point.
- 26:16And, you know, so I mean, he was, we talked about that with
- 26:18Ben McCollum the other day and he's like probably won't
- 26:21practice Thursday, will on Friday and Saturday.
- 26:23You know, if they can get their legs back, that should be no
- 26:26problem on Sunday. You know, But yeah, these are,
- 26:30again, you can't afford to dump one of these because that puts a
- 26:33lot of pressure on that last part of the schedule.
- 26:35But I do think they're ready. I do like how they're playing.
- 26:38You know, other than the Tavian Banks injury.
- 26:40I don't, I don't, I mean, for the most part, they're healthy.
- 26:44You know, they kind of got through that that stomach flu
- 26:46stretch here from a couple weeks ago, which thank God I didn't
- 26:49catch it, but but anyway, no, I I do like where this team is at
- 26:55right now on the way they're playing.
- 26:56Did McCullum He says banks is be able to play tonight after the
- 27:01game I I thought that I saw a quote that he mentioned that it
- 27:04goes back. It's the same injury and I'm
- 27:06paraphrasing it's the same thing that bugged or plagued him when
- 27:10he was at drink. What we look you only missed one
- 27:12game last year. Do you know what the injury that
- 27:15that Banks apparently is dealing with?
- 27:17You know, John? It's, it's something, I'll use
- 27:21the, the phrase lower body. But I, I do think I, I just, I
- 27:26don't know, but I, I, I do think they would, they would be wise
- 27:29to kind of take it easy with him tonight.
- 27:31And, and you know, if, if he can go maybe 8 or 9 minutes,
- 27:36something like that, because you've got other guys you can
- 27:38use and you've got you, you can kind of space those minutes out,
- 27:42I think. But just be wise with him.
- 27:44Kind of, kind of take it easy with him here because you're
- 27:47going to need him down the stretch.
- 27:48I mean, because he has been it's so good for them this year.
- 27:50You want him better for, you know, the end of February and
- 27:54March. They kind of take it easy on
- 27:56him. And that's why Brendan Hostas
- 27:57played is not so important because because you're going to
- 28:00need him a little bit more than what you've been using them.
- 28:03So get him those minutes, get him at, you know, get him used
- 28:07to those kind of minutes and and use him here in the next couple
- 28:10of games and then get ready for, you know, as we talked about the
- 28:14final stretch. Big final stretch for them.
- 28:16Washington, this would be a nice win.
- 28:18Possibility of a quad 2, maybe even a quad win because
- 28:21Washington's schedule gets much easier in the back half of the
- 28:24Big 10 slate. 2611 guys for the Huskies.
- 28:27Is this trapping your rocks? Going to have to help out a
- 28:30little bit. You need more out of Cam Manwa
- 28:32going up against a couple of behemoths like that.
- 28:35This is not a big Iowa team, certainly as we know, concern
- 28:38level there. And do you think we're going to
- 28:39see your rock? I do because I mean, I, I think
- 28:43he's, he's, you know, again, I he's just kind of caught in the
- 28:46numbers game right now in terms of minutes available.
- 28:50But with this, with his size and the way he plays, I think you
- 28:55have to get him in a little bit tonight and, and use him to take
- 28:58some of the pressure off some of the other guys.
- 29:01If you get into foul trouble, you're really going to need him.
- 29:04So yeah, I do think we see him tonight.
- 29:06I do think he and I do think he'll give him good minutes when
- 29:09he's in there. I mean, he's never really hurt
- 29:12them when he's been in this year.
- 29:13I mean, I think he's played well when he's had his opportunities.
- 29:16So why not give him a little run tonight and let him see what he
- 29:20can do, because again, it's going to be all hands on deck as
- 29:24you get into the month of March. Let's ask the Tavian Banks
- 29:27question regarding free throws. How will he handle it, if indeed
- 29:31he does get within one or tied with Chris St. and Jordan
- 29:34Bohannon? What's going to happen I.
- 29:39I think he'll, I think he'll go for it, you know, And I mean, I
- 29:43I don't have a problem if he does.
- 29:45Yeah, I don't have a problem if he does.
- 29:47And because I mean, again, this is, it was, it was cool when,
- 29:51when Jordan Bohan did that, you know, a few years ago, you know,
- 29:55it, he doesn't have, you know, this is quite the same thing,
- 29:59you know, But so I do think you have to go for it.
- 30:02I mean, I, I think because I mean, at this point in the
- 30:04season, you got to get wins and you got to get points and you
- 30:07got to do these things. I think you got to do it.
- 30:09And no one will blame him if he does.
- 30:12I, I really think, and I, and I think it'll be cool if he can
- 30:15break the record. And and I don't think anybody, I
- 30:18don't think anybody should have a problem with it.
- 30:20I'm. With you.
- 30:21Let's jump over to the women. They had their own West Coast
- 30:24trip didn't go as well as it has so far for the Iowa men, falling
- 30:27to USC. Now the UCLA game, not a
- 30:29surprise. That is an elite level team.
- 30:31But losing to USC in that fashion, I think I overlooked to
- 30:35the importance of Taylor McCabe, just how important she is to
- 30:37this team. It's not just a three-point
- 30:39shooting. It's the other things Jan Jensen
- 30:41mentioned that after the game, every time you're supposed to
- 30:44switch, she switches, makes the right plays, the senior
- 30:48leadership. And this is a young team for all
- 30:51John. I think I overlooked at the
- 30:52importance of McCabe just thinking, oh, they can replace
- 30:54her with Addie deal, they'll be fine.
- 30:56There's more to it than just what she does shooting the
- 30:58basketball. I think anytime you lose a
- 31:01starter 18 lose start, especially at this point of the
- 31:03season, it takes you a little while to react and it takes you
- 31:07a while to accept the fact she's not going to be there.
- 31:11So I do think those two games. I think you kind of saw that by
- 31:15the way train is rolling by. But but yes, it is yeah, it's we
- 31:20got an eastbound stack train anyway.
- 31:23No, I do think I do think that that that that teams have to
- 31:27learn sometimes to play without somebody who I mean, you know,
- 31:30she was a 30 minute game player. So those are minutes that are
- 31:34going to go to somebody else. So they have to get used to the
- 31:37more playing time and more responsibility.
- 31:39And it came at a bad time for them.
- 31:42I mean, it's never a good time to lose somebody for the season,
- 31:44but it came, you know, as they're heading West.
- 31:47You know, my thought was go West and get a split and you're okay,
- 31:52you know, losing both kind of, you know, 9.
- 31:54Now you're back in the pack a little bit.
- 31:56Now you got to kind of start to, you know, you're now going to
- 31:59have to kind of contend with everybody around you.
- 32:01So yeah, it was a little disappointing if it was.
- 32:05They'll figure it out. I mean, there's enough time to
- 32:07figure it out. There's enough talent there to
- 32:09figure it out, but there's still that adjustment period of being
- 32:12without a player. Yeah, Speaking of figuring it
- 32:14out, how he deal figures out home and away her home numbers
- 32:18at home outstanding the Ohio State game.
- 32:20She had 20. She was one for 9 combined on
- 32:23the West Coast trip. Is that just being a freshman
- 32:25and life on the road and learning how to deal with it?
- 32:28All of that, I mean, it's, I mean, when you're a freshman,
- 32:31you know, there, there are certain freshmen that have never
- 32:34had a problem, see Caitlin Clark, but a lot of freshmen,
- 32:39there's an adjustment. And, and so this was this thing.
- 32:42I mean, she was going home, you know, and, and it's I, I don't,
- 32:47I don't want to put a lot on what happened because it is
- 32:51you're a freshman, you're in a nuke situation.
- 32:53You know, there's a lot going on.
- 32:55Let's see what she looks like tomorrow night against
- 32:57Minnesota. And let's see what she kind of
- 32:59looks like down the stretch here.
- 33:02Tomorrow night they get Minnesota.
- 33:03And in the past, these have been laughers.
- 33:05I was dominated here. It's taken maybe a little bit
- 33:08longer than people thought, but Don Blitzoite, she's done a
- 33:11really nice job with this team. And though they're 16 and six on
- 33:14the year, the advance metrics absolutely love this Minnesota
- 33:17team. Have you taken a look at the
- 33:18Gophers? I know they got a 65 girl in the
- 33:20middle. It definitely helps things out
- 33:22in a really good shooter on the outside.
- 33:24What do you know about the Gophers?
- 33:26And maybe certainly a tougher tussle than we've seen recently
- 33:28when these two teams have got together.
- 33:31Don's an old Summit League coach.
- 33:33Yeah, South Dakota. And and yeah, and when she was
- 33:36there and, and, you know, they played Western Illinois and
- 33:38she's really good coach. You know, I, I, I think she's
- 33:42been really good for that program.
- 33:44And I mean, think about where it was, you know, a couple of years
- 33:46ago. And, and, and, and I think she's
- 33:49done a really good job. I really haven't dug into much
- 33:51on them yet, but I do think that that it is going to challenge.
- 33:55You look down the stretch with this team, with this Iowa team,
- 33:58and you look at some of the games on here, there's there's
- 34:00going to be some interesting games that if you want to be a
- 34:03serious in that Friday round of the Big 10 tournament, you want
- 34:08or whatever it is now. I'm not, I don't even know the
- 34:11schedules sometimes anymore these conference tournaments.
- 34:14But if you want to be in that, in that double by or triple by,
- 34:17I guess you, you don't want, you don't want to be messing around
- 34:20with games like this. You want to win these games.
- 34:22They're at home. So it's going to be really
- 34:25important to kind of bounce back from from this trip to come out,
- 34:28play well on Thursday night and then do some things, get back to
- 34:32what you were before you left. John, I want to ask you this
- 34:36just from your experience. Obviously you're a newspaper
- 34:38guy. We're a newspaper guy,
- 34:40Burlington B now the Washington Post.
- 34:43I know I said those two papers in the same sentence, but you
- 34:45get my point. It, it it's it's starting to
- 34:49affect media in a whole lot of different places.
- 34:53I mean, we certainly didn't think we'd see the end of the
- 34:55Washington Post sports section, but but here we are.
- 34:58Here we are. And it's not coming back, Is it,
- 35:00John? It it's, we're consuming media
- 35:02differently now. And newspapers, sadly, if it can
- 35:07happen in the Washington Post, big paper like that, big sports
- 35:10action, nobody's safe. Yeah.
- 35:12I mean, think about the names that have come.
- 35:14Through Oh my God. You know, I remember when I was
- 35:17a kid and we would get the state edition of the Des Moines
- 35:20Register, and occasionally there would be a Thomas Boswell all
- 35:24story in there and Oh my God, you know, he's so good.
- 35:26And I've got all of John Feinstein's books and you know,
- 35:30Sally Jenkins, Kornheiser, Wilbos, all those guys and all
- 35:35those. And so I was, it was really sad
- 35:37today because, you know, it was this, this was, I mean, like I
- 35:42said, this was like you said, this is a big city sports
- 35:46section. And I think about, you know, I
- 35:48grew up reading the Chicago Tribune and I think what that's
- 35:50become now and, you know, and the things they don't cover
- 35:54anymore and you see this somewhere.
- 35:58And I was really sad today. I mean, I know it's common.
- 36:01You just you can see the handwriting in the wall in the
- 36:03last couple weeks. It was really sad and it's, you
- 36:05know, somebody who loved the print product and, and grew up
- 36:10in that era and seeing what the business has become.
- 36:14It's it gets sadder all the time I guess.
- 36:16Yeah, 4 All four major sports, too.
- 36:19Yes, in Washington, they won't have anybody on the beat.
- 36:22Unbelievable. Exactly.
- 36:24Yeah, brutal. One final thing, Yeah, just kind
- 36:29of on that side. I'm always interested in in your
- 36:31business and the writing side. So you're putting a story for
- 36:34The Associated Press on, say, an Iowa game.
- 36:37Has the writing changed? I mean, what they also asked for
- 36:40you. Has that changed and evolved
- 36:41throughout the years? Oh yeah, I mean, right now if,
- 36:45if, if they're ranked and it's top 25 for men, top 10 for
- 36:49women. Don't ask.
- 36:50I don't make that decision. It's 300 words and that's it.
- 36:55Now, if something newsworthy happens, like if a coach goes
- 36:59off after the press conference, you get another story.
- 37:02But but now for football, it's a little different.
- 37:04Football is 300 words at the buzzer, and then you take that
- 37:09story and add quotes to it after the press conference.
- 37:12Basketball, it's just 300 words and that's different, you know,
- 37:17and, and I mean, and I think back to when I was, you know, I
- 37:20think back to when I was putting together a sports section and
- 37:22you got these AP story, you had quotes and I think Super Bowl
- 37:26weekend coming up reminds me of that.
- 37:29I always love to work Super Bowl Sunday night, you know, because
- 37:32that Monday paper boy, you know, you could do a lot of things,
- 37:34graphics and stuff like that. So yeah, I mean, it's it is
- 37:38different. It is a lot different.
- 37:40And that's why with my site, that doesn't make me any money.
- 37:43I try to be the old school, I try to be the old school 25 inch
- 37:48story, you know, 1000 word story that kind of, you know, delves
- 37:52into the game and and does two different things.
- 37:55That's why I love the Athletic because The Athletic done some
- 37:58of those things, you know, So, yeah, so but again, it is just
- 38:03really the business is so much different.
- 38:06So sadly, so sadly. So it's a good thing the AP is
- 38:09paying 10 bucks a word for you. So good stuff.
- 38:14There it is. There it is.
- 38:15There's a train, whistle. Train, Kevin by now.
- 38:19Americana. Good stuff.
- 38:21Jumbo and camp. Love it.
- 38:23Love it. Thanks, John.
- 38:25Don't get hippo and camp. See you buddy, Jumbo and camp.
- 38:28Good to talk to you man. He loves his trains.
- 38:30And that thing sounded close. He did.
- 38:32Well, he covers the was the Burlington the baseball team,
- 38:36the Bees? Yeah, Burlington Bees.
- 38:39And he's always the train going by, right?
- 38:41It's always part of his tweet. He's an old school dude.
- 38:44I like John a lot. Quarter before 1 and Miller and
- 38:47Condon back. To wrap up our one, it's the
- 38:50Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller and Condon.
- 38:54Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever you're
- 38:58listening. Grateful that you are Trent.
- 39:00This would have been a day back in the day.
- 39:02Just that 25 year anniversary commercial reminded me of some
- 39:04of the things I didn't even know.
- 39:07You said something during the break.
- 39:08Totally caught me off guard. Today's signing day.
- 39:11Yeah, huge day for us. Used to be.
- 39:13Used to be, used to be. I, you know, I saw Twitter, all
- 39:17these Washington state flips. That's why another one we're
- 39:20stacking up on today of all days.
- 39:23They're becoming public. I did not realize it.
- 39:26So 12 new signees for Iowa State, 10 of them flips from
- 39:31Washington State at the high school ranks.
- 39:33Couple of pretty decent names. I got a top 300 kid, a four-star
- 39:37offensive lineman, Benjamin Mechakayla, who was committed to
- 39:41Washington State. Some other programs were
- 39:43involved trying to get him to flip, but he's going to go with
- 39:45Rogers to Iowa State. So you kind of go through, you
- 39:48just look at this list and you look at the wide range also of
- 39:52the way that it's set up out of this group.
- 39:54I think 10 different states are represented.
- 39:58Texas, Arizona, South Dakota, Washington, Colorado, North
- 40:01Dakota, Oregon, on and on and on.
- 40:03And get these guys from all over the place.
- 40:04Yep, talk about a great unknown that is Iowa State football
- 40:08coming. Up this show, it really is,
- 40:09really is I talk to people, high school coaches.
- 40:13Well, I, I don't talk to them. I listen to people that are
- 40:15close to them. They say that it's entirely
- 40:17different from what count. This guy's just a football
- 40:19junkie, right? He's not going to do that when
- 40:23in the dark BS. It's his.
- 40:25Well, did you see his his team at the Wild game the other
- 40:28night? No.
- 40:31Shirts off, not sure they were swilling beer.
- 40:33I'm, I'm guessing was the offensive lineman just out there
- 40:35having a ball, right? Campbell's guys, you don't see
- 40:38that, right? Because 2 button up, these guys
- 40:40are just dudes. I think this is going to be it's
- 40:43going to be fun to watch. If nothing else.
- 40:45I'm anxious to see how it, you know, how it goes forward.
- 40:49I really am. Tough job.
- 40:51It is not going to be easy. Obviously, Campbell set the bar
- 40:53really high and did things they'd never done before.
- 40:57Leading to Big 12 championship games, competing, playing in a
- 40:59Fiesta Bowl, beating Oregon in that game.
- 41:03I mean, think of the teams that they played recently, Oregon,
- 41:05Notre Dame, Clemson in bulk. Unthinkable for this program.
- 41:10It really is. All right, hour number two
- 41:12coming up next, we'll catch up with Cappy wherever he may be.
- 41:15It's sunny. It's palm trees we'll catch up
- 41:19with. Sounds like the South side of
- 41:20Chicago might. Be That's probably where he is.
- 41:23Cappy will join us, then Vinny I recovers the NFL for the
- 41:27Sporting News Miller in Condon hour to go.
- 41:29It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
