- 0:00Hey there Henson fans, this is JD Hansel for toughpigs.com.
- 0:04Today we're shining a spotlight on a new puppet special from the
- 0:07Jim Henson Company for PBS. We're very fond of each of those
- 0:12things. The show is called Wows About,
- 0:14and it's designed to teach kids about wonder and awe.
- 0:17Shot on location at Sequoia National Park, home of the
- 0:20largest trees in the world, the special follows a hedgehog named
- 0:23Roxy performed by Dorian Davies, and a pig named Ronald,
- 0:27performed by John Tartaglia, as they explore different ways of
- 0:30connecting with nature and culture.
- 0:32You can watch the show online right now for free on the PBS
- 0:36Kids YouTube channel. I can't say I've ever seen a
- 0:38puppet project use the natural environment this way.
- 0:40It's a unique production, and I got the opportunity to interview
- 0:43the show's creators about it. You're going to hear that
- 0:46interview now. I am now joined by Wows About's
- 0:49creators. Hallie Stanford is the founder
- 0:52of the production company 7 Crow Stories, which has a first look
- 0:55producing deal with the Jim Henson Company.
- 0:57Previously, she served as president of television for the
- 1:00Henson Company, where her executive producer credits
- 1:02include The Dark Crystal, Age of Resistance and Frankel Rock Back
- 1:06to the Rock, among several others.
- 1:07Hallie, welcome back to Tough Pigs.
- 1:09Thank you. I'm happy to be back.
- 1:11That was fun hearing that introduction.
- 1:13I felt, I felt like I was on like a 70s dating show.
- 1:16Yeah, Yeah, yeah. Who's behind the curtain?
- 1:19Oh well here comes another one because this wouldn't be the
- 1:22same without talking to the show's Co creator Dorian Davies,
- 1:25who likewise has many credits as an executive producer and writer
- 1:28for Henson Projects. Dorian is a puppeteer who has
- 1:31performed in projects ranging from Puppet Up to Word Party to
- 1:34Julie's Green Room and is the principal puppeteer in Wows.
- 1:37About. Hi, Dorian.
- 1:38Thanks for talking with us today.
- 1:40Hi, thanks for making us sound so fancy.
- 1:42I know I love it. You are.
- 1:44Fancy you are. What are you talking about?
- 1:46You are fancy. You're.
- 1:47Fancy. OK.
- 1:48OK, I'll take it. Yeah, So Wows about.
- 1:51Where did the idea for this show come from?
- 1:54What's the genesis of Wows about?
- 1:56Well, the genesis of Wiles about comes from, you know, whenever
- 2:00we create a show at the Jim Henson Company, we always think
- 2:02like it needs to have like a meaning for putting kids in
- 2:05front of that TV, right? Like what do we want to say to
- 2:07this generation and future generations?
- 2:10And so we thought a lot about, you know, really wanting kids to
- 2:14care for the planet and one another, and how are we going to
- 2:17create a show that inspires them to do that.
- 2:19So just kept noodling on and thinking about it.
- 2:22And on a drive, as I get most of my good ideas, when I'm driving
- 2:27through Topanka Canyon, suddenly came to me a little hedgehog out
- 2:30to see the wows of the world with little hiking boots and a
- 2:33guitar on her back like Dolly Parton, and thought that's the
- 2:37basis, that's where we need to start.
- 2:39And I was very lucky that within a couple days I saw an article
- 2:43in the New York Times about Dacher Keltner's research on awe
- 2:47and all its benefits. And one of the big benefits was
- 2:51inspiring us to care for the planet and one another and all
- 2:54about climate hope, which I knew that parents needed and wanted
- 2:57to give tools to this generation as they grow up caretaking our
- 3:01planet. And so it seemed the perfect
- 3:03combo. So I'm like, yes, that's it.
- 3:05She's out to see the wows of the world and experience awe.
- 3:09And so then needed to find a hedgehog and knew the perfect
- 3:13person to call to help create this character because it's so
- 3:17important, as you know, in the Jim Henson tradition, to create
- 3:22that character and build the show around that character.
- 3:25And who better to do that with than the Amy Poehler puppeteers?
- 3:29Doreen Davies It's. Me.
- 3:31I'm the hedgehog. She calls me hedgehog.
- 3:33I do. Well, let's let's talk about the
- 3:36characters then, who are Roxy and Ronald?
- 3:39Oh Roxy and Ronald. Roxy is like a an incredibly
- 3:45free spirited, musical creative little hedgehog who has like
- 3:51wanderlust in her heart and she goes off and everything she
- 3:56touches she turns into art. I always like to imagine her
- 3:58being the little a little hedgehog version of Andy
- 4:01Goldsworthy, making art out of nature and in any way she
- 4:05possibly can. Writing songs, doing dances.
- 4:08She's stressed Crochets. Yeah, she's stressed, stressed,
- 4:12stressed crochets. And then Ronald is our sweet
- 4:18Angel pig, who is fastidious and persnickety and very kind of.
- 4:24He's our eco warrior. He loves nature, but he is from
- 4:28the city, so he's like one of the he like he has he's a card
- 4:31carrying member of the Audubon Society.
- 4:33He. Organized he he understands
- 4:37things in concept, but not necessarily in practice, whereas
- 4:40Roxy understands things in practice, but really doesn't get
- 4:43the concept. And so that's where they that's
- 4:46where they meet and fall in love.
- 4:48No, no friendship. What do you think each of their
- 4:53different perspectives brings to the story?
- 4:55What can kids learn from Roxy and what can they learn from
- 4:58Ronald? Oh my gosh, I love that
- 5:01question. Well, they learn from each other
- 5:02and you'll see it in the special.
- 5:03But you know, they each start out with the same like
- 5:07excitement, which is I'm here to see the great outdoors, right?
- 5:11And Ronald is very, very excited to explore nature and to become
- 5:18a junior Ranger. And he is somebody that like
- 5:22does a tremendous amount of research before he goes on a
- 5:25trip. I think that there are things
- 5:26that like these are tools that we say could be could be
- 5:30something to help you experience awe and have a wonderful wows
- 5:33about. We're not saying you have to
- 5:35only be a Ronald, but I think that that's what Ronald brings
- 5:38to and also he has a real eco mindset.
- 5:40He's all about leave no of print behind, take care of nature and
- 5:44be very respectful. So I think those are the things
- 5:47that he brings to the table. Not that Roxy doesn't love
- 5:51nature, just she approaches it a completely different way.
- 5:54Yeah. Yeah, her perspective on nature
- 5:56is her is. It's something to be explored
- 6:00and met, an adventure. It's part of her adventure.
- 6:04It's part of her life experience.
- 6:06I think she wants to make friends.
- 6:08I think she meets Pecan and she's like, this is cool, let's
- 6:11party Pecan, I like you. Weird moves are fun.
- 6:15And then she kind of dives in deeper only to, you know,
- 6:18because Ronald exposes her to things she wouldn't have
- 6:21normally seen or done or. I love what you're saying,
- 6:24though, Like, yeah, Roxy's definitely somebody in nature
- 6:26that is going to like, reach out, talk to the Rangers, you
- 6:30know, get get in it, get messy with it and wrong.
- 6:33As you can see, the first thing he does is sit quietly and
- 6:35listen to to the quail and listen to the trees.
- 6:38And he is more of a solitary creature.
- 6:41So I think we're saying a little bit of both is good, but put it
- 6:45together and you'll have a really well.
- 6:47Really good time. Yeah.
- 6:49Yeah, One of the things that struck me when I was watching it
- 6:51is that this didn't take the, I think, easier or more cynical
- 6:57approach to writing a show about this topic where you have these
- 7:00kids who, you know, are apathetic about everything on,
- 7:03you know, on their phones all the time, just watching screens
- 7:05and have to learn to get excited about nature.
- 7:08They start excited about nature. And yet still you managed to
- 7:12expand their emotional palates to another place by finding
- 7:16wonder and awe. I don't know if I have a
- 7:18question there, but if if you have anything I feel like you.
- 7:21Experienced. What we were trying to write so
- 7:25it like makes us happy. Wonderful.
- 7:28You know, I think this age group, yes, I think that the
- 7:30preschool age group that this is written for, but obviously what
- 7:33we're finding out is that families, older kids, like
- 7:36everyone's loving it so that that feels really good.
- 7:39But preschoolers do love nature. You know, they're excited about
- 7:43they I call it like they have their like birthday cake happy
- 7:45everyday. They're like yay, a Roly Poly.
- 7:48How many times you do a child's laundry and there's there's
- 7:52rocks and she's CD show and sticks and.
- 7:56Weird. Feathers and just weird stuff
- 7:58you found in nature. And it's like, I don't
- 8:00necessarily think this snail belongs in our laundry, but I'm
- 8:04going to I'm going to put it out in nature.
- 8:07Thank you for bringing this to me.
- 8:09I think inherently kids are they're wondrous.
- 8:13Yeah, they are. And so that was that.
- 8:15That always felt like we had to deliver that.
- 8:17It's just that now that they're in a place like Sequoia National
- 8:22Park that is filled with some extraordinary awe and diversity
- 8:26in the awe in nature. I think exposing that to
- 8:29children, I hope what we're demonstrating is wow, they can
- 8:33have a deeper and more meaningful connection with
- 8:35nature. I know I do after filming Wows
- 8:38about in Sequoia National Park. Like literally those trees are
- 8:42they are giant Tolkien ants. They are absolutely
- 8:47extraordinary, beautiful, motivated us to get up every
- 8:50morning and honor them. And I'll just say so you know,
- 8:53even you know, this 56 year old, like I've suddenly had a more
- 8:57deeper and meaningful relationship with nature after
- 8:59filming while I was about. So anyway, I don't know if that
- 9:03answered your question either, but we love talking about this.
- 9:06Talk about the trees for hours, man.
- 9:08Well, can you share a little bit more about the production
- 9:11experience then and how adapting puppetry production that's
- 9:14usually in a studio to a National Park worked?
- 9:18What were the challenges that came with that?
- 9:20Lots of challenges I will say that one of the other reasons I
- 9:26got into conceiving of Wiles about is that working on Fraggle
- 9:30Rock back to the rock and the uncle traveling Matt pieces and
- 9:34being able to put Matt out in the world in a kind of really
- 9:37extraordinary way. You know, I went and filmed
- 9:39uncle traveling Matt in Korea in Mexico City.
- 9:43We just were like these look beautiful, these puppets out in
- 9:46the real world. What would happen if we put them
- 9:50out in like awe inspiring, you know, Ken Burns style nature?
- 9:54What what would that look like? So I think that we'd already
- 9:59done it in a short like like in like short pieces, but we'd
- 10:04never done it in 1/2 hour special.
- 10:07So it. Wasn't easy.
- 10:08No, it was. Not we got a lot of like, can't
- 10:10you just do this on a green screen?
- 10:12Like there was a lot of like, how are we going to do this with
- 10:15the budget? How are we going to do?
- 10:17And we really lucked out with Jamie Burke, who is our amazing
- 10:21producer who made it a reality. She made a read all the
- 10:24logistics and then John Tartaglia, who directed it and
- 10:27certainly knew exactly how to have these characters to be
- 10:31directed and live in this natural and deliver comedy.
- 10:35We wrote a lot of setups, we wrote a lot of different.
- 10:39Setups. Yeah, they.
- 10:40Told us we now nobody, nobody remembers.
- 10:43They gave us that, yeah. But so it's a lot of prep,
- 10:48right? We had to do a lot of prep.
- 10:50We had to do multiple scoutings to see like to make sure we were
- 10:54close enough that we weren't losing time transporting from
- 10:57one area to the next. There was a lot of prep.
- 11:01You know, we're at altitude, we're an hour away from the
- 11:03hotels, there's no reception, no Wi-Fi.
- 11:06There's a lot of a lot of consideration to be made when
- 11:10you're shooting in cases like that.
- 11:11And then also we're shooting in a National Park, which has a
- 11:14certain amount of you, you, you can't just shoot like you would
- 11:19normally shoot, but there are some sensitive areas where you
- 11:22have to have a, a skeleton crew and there and you have to go in
- 11:25earlier before the tourists come.
- 11:26And there was a lot of consideration to make sure that
- 11:30we left no trace as a crew and a production in that place, like
- 11:36we're trying to honor it, not deplete it.
- 11:40And on top of all of that, we had no idea what would happen
- 11:44with the weather or the light or whatever.
- 11:47Like I once got on my walkie-talkie, there's a bear
- 11:50coming down 5 miles away towards your your set.
- 11:54And I was like, I'm not telling anyone yet.
- 11:56I didn't know about this, yeah. So, you know, it's sort of like
- 11:59the natural world and particularly the weather was
- 12:01always, you know, we just didn't know until until that minute.
- 12:05Wow, this may be a silly question because I, as a Muppet
- 12:10fan, should know the answer to it.
- 12:12How does Roxy drive? That's a.
- 12:15Really good question. And we're not gonna tell you
- 12:19we'll. Tell you, we'll tell you.
- 12:21So you know those remote control Power Wheels cars?
- 12:26Yeah, sure. That's the inside frame of
- 12:30Roxy's campervan. So Ian Opnagle is our art
- 12:33director and Giles August was our engineer and prop master and
- 12:37together they. Wrote this.
- 12:39Wonderful van and so it actually works it's remote control it
- 12:42works it can be operated and then Roxy was put in there.
- 12:47We learned here was a learning little behind the scenes that
- 12:50that they taped her hands to the wheels.
- 12:54And so while the remote control operators were trying to drive
- 12:58it, Roxy was driving it the other way we should.
- 13:01So lesson learned. We won't.
- 13:03The wheel would turn when, when the remote control car would
- 13:06turn and her arms are really short too, so, so it would turn
- 13:11her arms and then her face would lunge forward.
- 13:14We had to, they had to like we were all kind of Frankensteining
- 13:17and they pulled the wheel out and they put in a separate
- 13:20wheel. It didn't turn.
- 13:21And it was absolutely masterful. Like their their skill set is
- 13:26beyond. And then I'll just tell you this
- 13:29too. And then Dorian is sitting
- 13:31there, puppeteering Roxy's mouth remotely.
- 13:34With the RC, yeah. Off off camera.
- 13:37So, you know, a lot of different elements had to be put together
- 13:41to make that. That we call it the Kermit
- 13:44riding the bike moment of Roxy driving that van.
- 13:47Yeah. And then through the power of
- 13:48editing, then you'd go to close-ups of her singing that
- 13:51we. We filmed that.
- 13:52We filmed and we created and this was Johnny's idea.
- 13:56Johnny was very ambitious. Yes, we created, they created
- 13:59this whole process trailer and then took the shell that was on
- 14:02the outside of the Pow pow power wheel and put it on top of the
- 14:05process trailer. And then Johnny and I sat
- 14:08underneath it and puppeteered all the close-ups and, you know,
- 14:12like that, all the cool stuff from the end and from the very
- 14:15beginning. And it was a lot of crew like
- 14:18pushing them back and forth like 8 times.
- 14:20And there was like this slight incline and they were like
- 14:23pushing and pushing, like turning around and doing.
- 14:28And every time they'd be OK, another take and I go.
- 14:30I'm so. Sorry I'm so.
- 14:32Sorry, because they're pushing mine and Johnny's full weight on
- 14:35our way. Oh.
- 14:37Gosh, how? How many days was the shoot?
- 14:40We were there 5 days. But it was like 1/2 day on
- 14:43either side so we could travel. Yeah.
- 14:45And then we also did a little bit of green screen shooting on
- 14:48one day too. You'll see you've seen in the
- 14:51end when they sing the song Let's Go on a while.
- 14:52It's about you see all the possible places they can go.
- 14:55So yeah, we actually filmed that on location.
- 14:59We had to find a place to shoot and set up a green screen, which
- 15:02happened to be a church that lent us some space so.
- 15:07Amazing. Three Rivers, Yeah, that has
- 15:09great coffee. There's a good coffee shop.
- 15:11So if anyone goes to Sequoia National Park, you gotta stop at
- 15:14that. Amazing.
- 15:14You gotta. Stop at Three Rivers.
- 15:16That's like the Shire. Awesome, Dorian, a question for
- 15:20you as a writer and a puppeteer. By the time you've written a
- 15:23script starring a character, you probably know that character
- 15:26pretty darn well. Do you find that there's still
- 15:29more to discover about a character you've written once
- 15:31you're working with the puppet? Great question.
- 15:33Yes, absolutely. We were just up in Visalia for
- 15:38the premiere of Wow's About and Johnny and I got to improvise
- 15:43the whole time on stage and it was so fun.
- 15:46And I was like, we're figuring out who these characters are all
- 15:50the time. Yeah, all the, all the, all the
- 15:52time. And if it doesn't feel true in
- 15:54that moment, it won't make it to screen.
- 15:56But it's always, it's always a process to go deeper into.
- 16:01It, I think it's a gift that Dorian had from idea to special
- 16:06airing 3 years. So Dorian had this wonderful
- 16:09opportunity and Johnny as well, to just really play with these
- 16:11characters for a long time. And so by the time we got on
- 16:15set, they knew Roxy and Ronald. And yes, they'll keep evolving.
- 16:19I mean, they'll keep you in, but their essence that like that was
- 16:21Roxy and Reynolds. So that's kind of a gift that we
- 16:23got in working with Dorian and Johnny from the very beginning.
- 16:28Awesome. As we start to move towards the
- 16:31end of our time, I wanted to ask each of you, do you have a
- 16:33favorite memory of a time you experienced awe?
- 16:38Awe in. Life or on the shoot?
- 16:41In life, just any example of awe.
- 16:44Well, I think tough pigs would like this experience.
- 16:47When I was a little girl, I, I grew up in San Diego and at the
- 16:52Museum of Man, they had the traveling exhibit of The Muppets
- 16:57when I was a little girl. And I remember walking and by
- 17:01the way, the news was there that day for some reason.
- 17:03So I was on camera like stalking Kermit the Frog.
- 17:07But to see Kermit in person as a little girl in the museum was
- 17:13that was definitely awe inspiring and definitely
- 17:15inspired me to, you know, one of the reasons, many reasons that I
- 17:20also wanted to come and one day work for Kermit the Frog.
- 17:23Oh. My gosh, that's a really good
- 17:25answer, Hallie. Awe in my life.
- 17:28There are so many amazing examples of experiencing awe and
- 17:32I'm going to tell you one that just because I I am a crazy
- 17:39James Taylor fan, that's cool fact about me.
- 17:44When I was a little girl, my mom gave me a Walkman and we went on
- 17:48a vacation and I only had one tape and it was a bootleg of
- 17:52James Taylor sweet baby James. And I listened to it for a month
- 17:55non-stop, non-stop. And my godfather got me tickets
- 18:02when I and I was young. I must have been like 14 and
- 18:07tickets to go see James Taylor at the Santa Barbara County
- 18:10Bowl. And it was my first concert of
- 18:15it was my second concert, but it was like the first, the one I
- 18:19remember the most profoundly. And it was like he was a friend
- 18:23and I knew all the songs by heart.
- 18:25And I felt like I was witnessing something really, really special
- 18:29and sacred to me. And then last night, the reason
- 18:32I'm telling you this is because I guess it's his last tour ever.
- 18:35I saw him at the Santa Barbara County Bowl last night.
- 18:38No way. Yeah.
- 18:40And it was just like, it felt like a real beautiful.
- 18:45Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:46It comes in all forms, but music is one of them.
- 18:50Wow, my final question, will we see more adventures with Roxy
- 18:56and Ronald? Yes, yes.
- 18:58We're just gonna say yes. We're just gonna say it.
- 19:01Yes, we're making it so great. We are.
- 19:04We're out there raising funding for the series, but we also have
- 19:08lots of appearances of Roxy and Ronald coming up at museums and
- 19:12hopefully more music videos that you'll see.
- 19:15So we feel like we're just getting started.
- 19:17Yeah. Dorian Davies and Hallie
- 19:19Stanford, thank you so much for talking with Tough Pigs today.
- 19:22Yay, thanks for having us. Hey, come on, let's go.
- 19:25Yeah.
