- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's up everybody?
- 0:14Speaker 2: Jeff Moster, Adam Kaplan, and Andrew de Checko from Inside
- 0:18the Birds dot Com and the Eagles had a practice
- 0:21on Monday. It was a full padded practice, a long one,
- 0:24about almost two hours. So we'll get our observations. We'll
- 0:27talk about the developments from the Eagles as we get
- 0:30closer to the first preseason game Thursday night. I imagine Monday
- 0:35will be their roughest practice because Wednesday they're gonna have
- 0:38a walk through before the Thursday game. So Tuesday, this
- 0:41morning will probably be I would imagine a lighter practice, right,
- 0:44and yeah, it got to be.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It's gotta be rammed down.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 0:48Speaker 2: So so it's good they've had a couple of good
- 0:50practice over the weekend and on Monday, and then there's
- 0:53a lot for us to get into. So again, light
- 0:56practice today on Tuesday, walk through Wednesday. Thursday is the
- 0:59pre he's in game. Then of course they'll be off Friday.
- 1:02We'll have everything covered throughout the week.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Fellas.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Want to start off just really quickly with the injury updates.
- 1:10AJ Brown still dealing with the hamstring he was out
- 1:13Byron Young was a addition, he was out on Monday.
- 1:17Speaker 1: He's an addition to the list.
- 1:19Speaker 2: He had a groin injury, but the Eagles did get
- 1:23Ben Van Sumer in back.
- 1:25Speaker 1: He was limited with the ankle.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Mac McWilliams was listed as limited, and then Davante Smith.
- 1:30This was cool because Davante Smith is back in practice
- 1:34and Andrew I thought he was a.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Highlight.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I almost gave him a game ball for Villy Voice
- 1:39dot Com, not for anything other than just kind of.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Like being able to get open like Davante Smith does.
- 1:45Speaker 4: I refer to him as a smooth criminal. Everything he
- 1:48does looks effortless. He caught a long crosser from Jalen Hurtz.
- 1:52Doesn't look like he misses a beat no matter how
- 1:54much time he misses. He's such a reliable player, an
- 1:58integral to the success of this offense.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, a cue of Michael Jackson. He is smooth, That's
- 2:06what I was writing. I was he didn't make He
- 2:08made a couple of nice plays at him in the
- 2:10team drills, but it's really what really jumps out. And
- 2:13this is why I've thought that he might be poised
- 2:15for an even bigger year.
- 2:17Speaker 1: If this team has to throw it a little bit more.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Is that just his comfort and his route running, his
- 2:23razor sharp cuts really stand out, especially in these team drills.
- 2:27He's he's every year, I feel like he just gets
- 2:30more and more in sync with with Jalen.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Yeah, two things. So on Sunday he dominated when they
- 2:35he started off, he got he got in early, and
- 2:39he looked like he had missed a beat, missing over
- 2:41a week of practice. And the thing that surprised me
- 2:44is like he I think he we we talked about
- 2:46the start camp about Devancee Smith's touchdown numbers. It's very surprising. Okay,
- 2:50like what without looking I think it was maybe the
- 2:52fourteen over the last two years. He wouldn't thick of
- 2:54him as a guy, I'd score a lot of touchdowns.
- 2:56But the thing about him and for being the slim Reaper,
- 3:00is how physical he is. Like that's we've talked about.
- 3:04That crazy catch was against Washington maybe his rookie season
- 3:07or second year. Oh yeah, the bomb, we went up
- 3:09and got it. He went on his back, maybe missed
- 3:11one plane, came back in. The guy is he's bes
- 3:15as tough as a cups.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Or the catch that he had against Pat Sertane as
- 3:18a rookie in Denver where he took it away.
- 3:20Speaker 3: From good next team, that's right, it was against Fangio, right,
- 3:26it's tough. He's still the head coach.
- 3:28Speaker 1: H Yeah, yeah, I think it was the head coach
- 3:30then yep.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, So I know it's like I feel like we
- 3:34say said it last year, maybe this year. I mean,
- 3:36the dynamic of the offense changed a lot last year.
- 3:39But I really can see at some point in his
- 3:42career DeVante Smith sort of going off and having one
- 3:44of those thirteen fourteen hundred yard seasons where everything goes right.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But again, they have to they'd have to be throwing
- 3:49the ball a lot more for that to happen.
- 3:52Speaker 2: But either way, as good of a number one, A
- 3:54or two as there is in the league. And then
- 3:57this is kind of funny. So Jahad was removed from
- 4:01the limited list. He is now a full participant. Now,
- 4:04if any of you two can describe for me the
- 4:07actual you can tell.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Me what the difference is in the verbiage.
- 4:10Speaker 2: But when you watch practice, if you if you thought
- 4:13that there was anything limited in Johad Campbell's usage, you'd
- 4:16have to like explain it to me, like I'm three
- 4:19years old. Because he's been out there pretty much on
- 4:21every snap doing everything. Andrew, have you even noticed a
- 4:23period in teams or one or drill where he's not
- 4:28done anything?
- 4:29Speaker 3: No, I haven't seen.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Him limited in any capacity. And you saw a little
- 4:33bit of that edge that he plays with. I think
- 4:35he's gonna add a lot of juice to this defense.
- 4:36There is one play where he gently wrestled tight end
- 4:40Harrison Bryant to the ground on a short completion. I mean,
- 4:44you don't you don't want somebody to kind of take
- 4:46away what makes them, what makes them special. Obviously it's
- 4:49hard for him to pull the rains, you know, pull
- 4:51the rains back.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so is that on Monday you're referring.
- 4:54Speaker 5: To or is that a Monday? Monday? Monday?
- 4:56Speaker 2: So now he's starting to stack days of maybe a
- 4:58little too much contact with the opponent.
- 5:02Speaker 3: That's the thing is you can't and the players will
- 5:05tell you their coach very hard about this. Do not
- 5:07hurt your teammate. Like, as physical as you want to be,
- 5:11you have to know what you're allowed. We get he's
- 5:13a rookie, but he can't go over the line, right.
- 5:15Maybe careful of that stuff because I've seen it traveling
- 5:17from camp to camp over the years, I've seen guys
- 5:19get heard, you know. It's it's it's a shame when
- 5:23it happens, and nobody tries to hurt anyone, but sometimes
- 5:26you just your momentum takes so you just got to
- 5:27be careful.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's been I feel like in the times
- 5:31of Campbell has done it. Andrew, I don't has he
- 5:33been admonished loudly for it because it's not been It's
- 5:37not been purposeful or intentional. There was a cornerback whose
- 5:40name is I can't remember right now a couple of
- 5:42days ago who did make a tackle and got admonished
- 5:46pretty loudly for it. They were screaming at him like,
- 5:48what what the effort you're doing?
- 5:49Speaker 3: Here?
- 5:50Speaker 2: Was on Goddard, I think right, And he got admonished
- 5:53for it because it was less of an accident and
- 5:56more like the guy got caught in the moment and
- 5:57made a tackle and you can't do that when.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You're not well.
- 6:00Speaker 4: For Campbell, it never looks intentional to to your point there, Jeff,
- 6:04it always looks like he's almost apologetic or trying to
- 6:06help them up after the play. He just goes one
- 6:08hundred miles an hour obviously with intent, but it's never
- 6:12and it doesn't seem to me that he's trying to
- 6:15do that purposefully.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Right, And that's what they tell rookies.
- 6:17Speaker 2: If you're gonna make a mistake, do it at one
- 6:19hundred miles per hour. And like you said, just try
- 6:21not to hurt your teammate. Yes, he did hurt Van
- 6:24Sumrin a couple of days ago, put him out. Van
- 6:26Sumer limped off, but Van Szumern's back. So all is
- 6:29good as long as you don't do it at a quarterback.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You're really they're not.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Oh, then you got it. You'll be you know what,
- 6:35you either get yelled at or some coaches I've seen it,
- 6:38they throw the guy out of practice. Absolutely, that will
- 6:40not be tolerated. There's a reason why he's wearing a
- 6:42red jersey. All touch the quarterback.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Vic.
- 6:45Speaker 3: You know, Vic talked about it when he's talking about
- 6:47on his press conference on Monday. You know that there's
- 6:50there's some things you just can't do.
- 6:53Speaker 1: All right, let's get through practice.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Now.
- 6:55Speaker 1: This practice was, uh, it was interesting because.
- 6:59Speaker 2: They went they did a lot of backed up drills
- 7:02on Monday. Andrew and you've been to every single one?
- 7:04Was this the most backed up? When I say backed up,
- 7:07the offense will start at the zero, at the three,
- 7:11at the five, and then it'll be it'll be situational
- 7:14or it'll be moving as much as you can move it,
- 7:16but it's obviously designed for the offense to be uncomfortable.
- 7:19Was this the first time this year, Andrew, that you
- 7:21had seen that much?
- 7:22Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 7:23Speaker 4: That that was the first occasion that I saw that,
- 7:25And it was also the first occasion, if you remember, Jeff,
- 7:27there was a situational drill where each unit got a
- 7:30chance to try and move the football. They got one
- 7:32opportunity I think for the first team it was offside.
- 7:36Second team Thomas Booker storms through the middle to break
- 7:40up a pass, get a hand up, and then the
- 7:42third team Duri and Thompson Robinson sort it wide of
- 7:46wide receiver if he had die a. So that was
- 7:49a that was interesting too, because you see their urgency.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Adam, You've never seen anything so funny as a
- 7:56bunch of first team offensive guys coming off the field
- 8:00because they drew and off sides and never actually had
- 8:03to run the play.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Because the situation is you're backed up.
- 8:06Speaker 2: But it's like I think I think it was like
- 8:08third and five or third and four or something like that.
- 8:11They drew the off sides, they got the first down nobody.
- 8:14So like Dickerson's walking off the field with a big
- 8:16smile on his face. My lot is like clapping hands
- 8:19with Lane Johnson. Anytime you can get through a drill
- 8:21in camp and you don't need to contact anybody because
- 8:24you drew it.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Off sides and then you get to come right win
- 8:26for you.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a hell of a win. Yeah, to free down, Yeah,
- 8:29to free play for you. Yeah. So you like that.
- 8:31So you know, it's interesting just seeing, you know, I
- 8:34looking at other reporters who are at other camps, like
- 8:37you see, like what one day the Bears had a
- 8:39terrible practice, you know, they ben Johnson. Maybe I don't
- 8:43know what exactly what he did, but it was bad
- 8:45and he was not happy Andrew and you know, I
- 8:48don't know if you two have seen this. I haven't
- 8:49seen it yet in the practice I've been to. Like
- 8:51I saw I mentioned this before in twenty twenty two
- 8:55at Cleveland and Maria where he came well got chucked out,
- 8:58but he got he got taken like he tald jamals
- 9:01go to get him off the field. But I haven't
- 9:03seen these practices are pretty crisp, guys, I don't see.
- 9:07They're faster. There's no wasted time, which really bothers me.
- 9:11At some other camps, like it's like station a station
- 9:14and watch Serryani. By the way, that's what he does
- 9:16as a CEO head coach. You haven't really talked about
- 9:18this much. But he goes, he observes, he folds his hands,
- 9:23He'll get a guy's here. So yeah, there's there's some
- 9:25stuff going on here.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Very efficient. Yeah, that's that's the word that I would
- 9:29use for it. No wasted time, fast paced, and they
- 9:33get a lot accomplished.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yeah. It surprises me, just from like a long time perspective.
- 9:38Some they structure their camp. Every every coach does this differently.
- 9:42Speaker 2: But I remember in the Indy Reid era, you got
- 9:44used to a sequence which.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Was warm ups, right, and then position drills the wide
- 9:50receivers with the wide receivers, running backs, running backs.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I still do that, but then it would go to
- 9:55from positional drills to offensive drills, defensive drills, and then
- 9:59they would together for seven on sevens and then team
- 10:02and it almost never deviated from that. But in Nick
- 10:06Siriani's camp, they could start they could go just straight
- 10:09from warm ups, kick the ball off like they did
- 10:11on Thick on Sunday, right, and then get right into
- 10:13team drills and it's like, whoa, you guys, that's it.
- 10:16You're just going straight to eleven on elevens. We're not
- 10:18doing seven. And then they'll break and then after that
- 10:21they'll get and do some some individual stuff so they
- 10:24have a round. There's a method to their madness. I
- 10:26haven't figured out exactly what it is, but they are
- 10:28definitely definitely structured differently than the way I remember it
- 10:32under Andy Well.
- 10:33Speaker 4: It forces, in my opinion, it forces players to not
- 10:36become comfortable or used to a certain regimen. You have
- 10:39to be prepared for everything. And even today, Jeff, they
- 10:42did the individual's position drills, then they went to one
- 10:46on once wide receivers, DB's offensive line, defensive line. Then
- 10:50they went to team full team. So I like the
- 10:53variation there and I think it keeps a lot of
- 10:55folks on their toes.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Yeah, on Sunday they went looking at my clock. It
- 10:59was the first twenty five or individual drills. Then they
- 11:02did some seven on seven, then he did some team,
- 11:04then they went to specials, and then they went back
- 11:07to whatever they did that they were doing earlier or so.
- 11:11But it varies by camp, you know, it's very it
- 11:13varies by camp. They don't all do that. It's it's
- 11:16what you think you need. And bo Nick has tweaked
- 11:19it since twenty one. He's tweaked it over the years
- 11:21about how he wants it done. Definitely, definitely.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I mean, just the fact that that practice on Monday
- 11:26was almost two hours alone was I'm just gonna say,
- 11:29early camps.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I remember I called you, like, let's say they had
- 11:34a practice at one, I don't know whatever. In year one,
- 11:36they weren't all at ten o'clock. He said, why you
- 11:38call me? I said, because practice over. You're like, what
- 11:40are you talking about? I saidude, I think it's forty
- 11:42three minutes.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought there were still doing press conferences at
- 11:45that point. I didn't know.
- 11:47Speaker 3: They had arted practicing. What's that, I.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Said, I didn't even realize they had started practicing.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly right, right. I think they might have had
- 11:53won like thirty sei menutes. Yeah, the but sports science
- 11:57or whatever.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yeah, So in general, we'll get into some of the
- 12:00positions in the second.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I did think, Andrew, curious on your thought for this
- 12:04this practice on Monday.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I thought the offense bounced back.
- 12:08Speaker 2: I thought, you know, especially for being backed up a
- 12:10lot and having the defense coming out you I just
- 12:12thought the offense looked more crisper and more more fluid
- 12:16than in the past few days.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:18Speaker 4: I thought Hurts was in a really good rhythm delivering
- 12:20the football. A lot of mid range throws for him.
- 12:22The Key had some really pinpoint accurate passes today, but
- 12:26they were keeping the defense sort of reeling. I can
- 12:28remember he talked about the DeVante Smith crossing route. There's
- 12:31another one to Kylin grantson where he found the saft
- 12:34spot in the zone. Jaywin delivers in the football and
- 12:36I think it was in front of maybe Smile Mondon
- 12:38and Reid blank and Ship and just some you know,
- 12:41touch and accuracy.
- 12:42Speaker 5: And he kept the offense on schedule today, yeah Monday.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, which is good to see. And that's part
- 12:47of what you're going to see a camp. You're going
- 12:48to see one side of the ball dominate than the other.
- 12:51And you know, the defense.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Had gotten a couple of really good days in a row.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So it's nice to see the offense bounce back about
- 12:58Let's talk about the running back thing position here. Barkley
- 13:01got a nice heavy workload over the weekend, got a
- 13:04little bit more of a workload again on Monday.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Not as much as probably the weekend. But where's where
- 13:08are we looking at to me?
- 13:09Speaker 2: Because right now Will Shipley is the more versatile back
- 13:14as opposed to Dylan, But Dylan's getting his fair share
- 13:17of carries too. I mean, if I think I said
- 13:19this to Adam in the pod that dropped Monday, if
- 13:21they had to make the fifty three right now, it
- 13:23looks like both all three make it and that's your
- 13:25three running backs.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, yeah, okay, I just wanted to just yeah.
- 13:30Speaker 3: There was never a chance Dylan was going to get cut.
- 13:32It's just as long as he.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Was nest right, oh yeah, unless he was healthy, right, yeah,
- 13:38exactly right.
- 13:38Speaker 3: It's just the thing with him is though, and he
- 13:42looks fine. I've watched him quite a bit. He looks fine.
- 13:46Shipley's just more explosive, I understand. Like that from scot
- 13:49e standpoint, there's a real question about how much Shipley
- 13:51can handle. Sure, here's a weird body. Like if you
- 13:55looked at his weight, you go, oh, he should be fine,
- 13:56but he's not because it's the way he's built. One
- 13:59of the things that's I've learned through twenty seven years
- 14:01is the scouting people look at body types different than
- 14:06the media and the public does. They look at body
- 14:08type shape, not so much weight. It's how you're built.
- 14:13Where is your weight? Is it lower? Body? Oruur body?
- 14:15Is it both? Is it thighs? Is it's is it can't?
- 14:18Is it's is it deltoid's Is it where you built?
- 14:22And that's the thing with Shipley, He's say lower, he's
- 14:24small on his backside. That matters when you talk about
- 14:28volume carriage.
- 14:29Speaker 2: But maybe that also is why he can be a
- 14:30little juicier than say Quadzilla who has the two hundred,
- 14:33who's got two hundred of his two hundred whatever pounds
- 14:36just in his quads alone. Talking about aj Dillon, I
- 14:38mean he's yeah, he's a big dude with those.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Can't miss that, by the way, it's impossible to miss that.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And yeah, I will say and again these are this
- 14:47is just a note on practice squad guys Montreal.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Harris has been out right, so I thought Montell Johnson.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I thought, son Derek Powell has shown his juice that
- 14:58he obviously has his size Andrew, but I mean he's
- 15:01made a couple of nice cutback runs and scampered through
- 15:04some holes.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Yeah, he has. And it wasn't just today there, It
- 15:08wasn't just Monday.
- 15:09Speaker 4: There were other days last week that I thought, you know,
- 15:11stretch run play, you see his explosiveness. I actually think
- 15:14despite being five foot seven hundred and eighty three pounds,
- 15:17he also holds up relatively well in pass pro. He's
- 15:20a stronger running back more than you would think for
- 15:23his size. He's an interesting player because he can also
- 15:26return kicks and he has really good speed. Very productive
- 15:29college player. I can't wait to see what he can
- 15:31do in the preseason.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Yeah, we thought he.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Might be by the way, we thought he might be
- 15:34one of those training camp darlings as we call him,
- 15:37because of the speed and because you don't tackle running
- 15:40back to the ground. So there have been a few
- 15:42runs by him by even Jalen Hurts where they called
- 15:45it down but it's not he could have or the
- 15:48opposite where he just speeds right past the guy because
- 15:51he can't really be hit.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Yeah, he is built well. The thing is that now
- 15:57he is depending who's measuring him, he might be under
- 16:01but he's well built. He's more you know, he's a
- 16:02change up. He's a kind of guy. Theoretically he'll be
- 16:06in a practice squad. Yeah, it's hard to find it
- 16:09because you have to find it. Like why would you
- 16:11keep him? Well, if he has two, if he's three
- 16:14great preseason games, you don't want to risk it. And
- 16:16you're like, wow, we found some we can't risk it
- 16:18and you keep them. But the thing is with Montreal
- 16:20Johnson out he's coming on here. He's he can make
- 16:23it interesting. And his vertical was really good at the
- 16:27pro day, so it was over forty, which is really
- 16:31really good. So there's something there with his kid, no doubt.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:35Speaker 2: So, speaking of the training camp, Darling, that we didn't
- 16:38see coming probably was Elijah Cooks, who continues to make catches.
- 16:43I know he beat Adri Jackson a couple of times
- 16:46on Monday.
- 16:48Speaker 1: He's clearly making more plays and more plays consistently than.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Johnny Wilson, maybe even an Ayah Smith, although Aias is
- 16:58not underperforming, but clearly Cooks is having a good camp.
- 17:02But Andrew I just don't know that it's we know this.
- 17:06It's not always a meritocracy, you know, like you if
- 17:09you're not a certain draft level, if you're not expected,
- 17:12like you're hoping to make the practice squad. I don't
- 17:14know if Cooks, no matter what he does, can crack
- 17:17this top four, won't roll it out.
- 17:18Speaker 1: But what are your thoughts? Well?
- 17:21Speaker 4: In order for him to be able to do that,
- 17:22special teams obviously plays a big part of it. He's
- 17:25only played forty two snaps over eleven games during his
- 17:28time with.
- 17:28Speaker 5: The Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 17:30Speaker 4: What I like about Cooks is that he does a
- 17:31nice job using his body for positioning, shielding defensive backs,
- 17:35using his basketball background in contesting Cats situations doesn't separate
- 17:41as well as maybe you'd like. Kind of reminds me
- 17:43of Joseph Nagata in that kind of way from last summer.
- 17:47But he's made more often than that. He's made the
- 17:49plays when they've come to him, and he has made
- 17:52more plays this summer, for what it's worth, than Johnny Wilson.
- 17:55Speaker 2: So, Adam, let's look at the picture here. It's always
- 17:58about the numbers, right, Your number one is into you
- 18:00got a J Brown you got DeVante Smith, you got
- 18:03Johan Dotson.
- 18:04Speaker 1: As top three right there.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Yep, that's you know.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I feel like at this point a Nia Smith is
- 18:09is playing himself on.
- 18:11Speaker 1: To the fifty three plus. He can give you some returnability,
- 18:13but it's more than.
- 18:15Speaker 5: Maybe he had a he had another.
- 18:16Speaker 4: He had a drop on an opportunity Jalen hurts at
- 18:19during team period.
- 18:22Speaker 3: You know.
- 18:22Speaker 4: It just he hasn't made a ton of plays during
- 18:24team periods and one on ones. He's done a really
- 18:27nice job separating. He usually matched up against Cooper Degen,
- 18:29but he hasn't really made any sort of a dent
- 18:33in terms of his opportunities in the team period.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Yeah, he is when he plays the Z position. It's
- 18:39just and we were talking about a Monday show they
- 18:41were douce him a little bit. He's just not explosive
- 18:43like that. There's a certain way you need to use
- 18:46him to get the most at him, because he's not
- 18:48He's not gonna win on his own. It's got he's
- 18:50got to be schemed open. But getting back to Cooks,
- 18:54whether he was at Nevada and then he transferred to
- 18:56San Jose stay for one year, The word from a
- 18:58scouting standpoint from looking at my is that he was
- 19:01a late separator. Like he he wouldn't get a lot,
- 19:04but he would use his body really well and then
- 19:06he'd run after the catch. There's definitely something there with him.
- 19:09He definitely runs better. It's not even close between him
- 19:12and Johnny Wilson.
- 19:13Speaker 5: He runs better.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Andrew made the point it's gonna come down
- 19:17on special teams that that number four job's completely open
- 19:20and it's an outside job. It's gonna be the backup
- 19:22X receiver. They have to figure out who the backup
- 19:25SZ will be. That'll that'll well, I'm sorry, it's Dots
- 19:28and Dots would be the back up. See what am
- 19:30I talking about? But yeah, backup X not that Dots
- 19:33that can't play it. But you want a bigger body,
- 19:34you really do you need a bigger body.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I mean, they don't even play Dots, and uh, you
- 19:39know Andrew and I were talking about this. I mean
- 19:40they they reduce his splits so much, and you know,
- 19:43every once in a while we'll see him line up
- 19:44wide and then they'll run it. So so they clearly
- 19:46don't feel like Dotson is a guy who's gonna win consistently.
- 19:50From the outside. I know, I can't wait for the
- 19:52commenters to say, well, what about the pass he caught
- 19:54in the Super Bowl that was from the out?
- 19:56Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, great, that was one. That's nice. But he
- 19:59consistently he lines up in.
- 20:00Speaker 2: A reduced split, So they clearly are telling you that
- 20:03they don't think he can line up outside and win consistently.
- 20:06But neither can Johnny Wilson, who we've seen at camp.
- 20:10Johnny Wilson runs with a twos. He gets the ball
- 20:12thrown his way every once in a while, but he
- 20:13doesn't play to his size. He seems to catch the
- 20:16ball only when he's wide open in the middle of
- 20:18his own Like if we're talking about this receiver picture here,
- 20:21not only are they is there not a clear number four?
- 20:24But usually he keep five And I don't know that
- 20:26there's a clear four or five at this point.
- 20:28Speaker 1: And that brings up the depth concerns that you might have.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Andrew Avery Williams, I mean, I know.
- 20:34Speaker 1: He's mean the up back on special teams.
- 20:36Speaker 3: I tell that, what are your thoughts of him, because
- 20:39I'm not seeing it so far.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Well, I haven't seen him offensively at all, but as
- 20:43a return man he hasn't gotten a lot of opportunities
- 20:45either at him. He seems to me that he's a
- 20:47core coverage guy. I was taking note of the first
- 20:50team kickoff group and he was on it multiple on
- 20:53multiple occasions. He's done that with it Atlanta.
- 20:57Speaker 5: I don't know. It's sort of a mystery.
- 20:58Speaker 4: They nick Sirianni's seeing bullish on him at the owner's meetings,
- 21:02and I haven't really seen it. I think they would
- 21:05probably love for Anayah Smith to be able to step
- 21:07up as a punt returner in the preseason, but there's
- 21:11no clear cut favorite in my opinion for the return job.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Jeff on that contract for Avery Williams, which he got
- 21:17one point two five one two two five one point
- 21:20two two five million, four hundred grand's fully guaranteed of that.
- 21:23That's not a lot. That's not going to keep him
- 21:25on the roster. He's going to have to perform. Yeah,
- 21:27but what Andrew just brought up, that was what we
- 21:29were excited about. Now, I know it's certainly we're still
- 21:32we're not there yet, we're not even halfway through training
- 21:34camp yet. But that, and we know he was hurt
- 21:37during Ota' sins. He was dealing with ever whatever lower
- 21:41body injury or something. But the bottom line is clock's
- 21:44ticking here.
- 21:45Speaker 2: He needs to show up certainly, and again it's it's
- 21:48about him, but it's also about the position where you
- 21:52know who's gonna be your punt returner, who's gonna be
- 21:54your kick returner, and who is going to round out
- 21:57your depth at wide receiver.
- 22:00Speaker 1: All lots of questions right now.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Do you think Will Shipley could still be the kick
- 22:02returner and occupy I think he could. I just can't
- 22:07imagine that the team wants Cooper to gene again to
- 22:10be the punt returner, so they got to figure out
- 22:12a way to get somebody in there who they also
- 22:16want to have on the fifty three.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Yeah, it's really interesting, Jeff, because there's a lot of
- 22:21young wide receivers that are obviously long shots and probably
- 22:24practice squad bound. Taylor Moran from Wake Forest, Darius Cooper,
- 22:30Giles Jackson, they've all repped there, but their chances of
- 22:33making the roster are pretty slim. I think it's really
- 22:37between Avery Williams and a Naias Smith for punt return.
- 22:41Will I think can do the kick return just fine.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, all right, So we'll continue to monitor that.
- 22:47I mean wide receiver depth we said was a little
- 22:49bit of a concern going into camp, and it remains
- 22:52well now. Moran did have a touchdown running with the
- 22:54threes in that red zone drill, and then Giles Jackson
- 22:57on Monday probably had the most high right highlight reel
- 23:00play of the day. He caught a bomb from Dorian
- 23:03Thomson Robinson about fifty yards would have been a touchdown,
- 23:07and he had to adjust because the past even though
- 23:09he beat who he'd be Perry, Yeah, the ball was
- 23:14thrown to the inside instead of leading him to the outside,
- 23:16so we had to make a nice over the shoulder
- 23:18catch with an adjustment on Andrew Andrews.
- 23:20Speaker 1: So it was really nice play by Giles Jackson.
- 23:22Speaker 2: But you know, I can't see Jiles Jackson making this
- 23:25fifty three out of camp either.
- 23:26Speaker 3: One thing, Darius Cooper, I'll say this, I've watched him
- 23:29quite a bit because I like, because of the ego's
- 23:31history of undrafter friedg is making it right. It's really
- 23:34going back to Corey Clement kind of learned my lesson,
- 23:37just don't discount a guy because he's an undrafted freger
- 23:40not making the team, and we just talked, well, we've
- 23:42talked about this. There's a waterfa opportunity for got to
- 23:45come out of nowhere. I'm sure he's not going to
- 23:49make the team, reasonably sure on it. But Darius Cooper's
- 23:52built better than Avery Williams, Taylor Moran and Nice Smith,
- 23:56Giles Jackson. He's got he's got a he's kid out
- 24:00of Charleton State. He's built really well. He's an interesting player.
- 24:05He'd be better for a practice squad. But there was
- 24:07something there, something, Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 5: Believe me.
- 24:09Speaker 4: If there's anyone who doesn't discredit, discredit undrafted free agent,
- 24:13it's me because I know I've seen a lot of
- 24:16these guys play at the collegiate level. It's just trying
- 24:18to find ways where they're going to be able to
- 24:20realistically fit in the equation. That's where the preseason games
- 24:23obviously come into play.
- 24:24Speaker 2: There you go, awesome, All right, let's go over to defense,
- 24:29unless there was anything else. Oh, offensively, I did want
- 24:31to get into the offensive line real quick, just to
- 24:34give you a few observations.
- 24:36Speaker 1: You know, the whole Kenyan Green thing to me is
- 24:39it's it is what it is.
- 24:41Speaker 2: It's if you get practice on Monday, and that is
- 24:47after Thomas Booker worked in pretty well, and I even
- 24:50thought Jillen Carter. Now you can say, of course, well
- 24:52Jalen Carter is way better, and he is, but Jalen
- 24:55Carter looked to me like he was going at half
- 24:57speed and still got the best of ken Kenya's like
- 25:01looked like his feet were in quicksand like it just
- 25:03you know, maybe he was sick because he did puke,
- 25:05or maybe just wasn't feeling well. But that's sort of
- 25:08the microcosm of not just his career but also a
- 25:11short ego sendure here where he just does nothing to
- 25:14stand out.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Right, I haven't been overly impressed with what I've seen.
- 25:19He's been getting second team work as of the last
- 25:21few days at left guard, doesn't he hasn't maximized his opportunity,
- 25:26and obviously today he left practice early, so it's not great.
- 25:32His outlook hasn't been great through nine practices now.
- 25:36Speaker 2: On the flip side, one of the rookie I think
- 25:39the two rookie linemen that standout had been Hit Miles
- 25:41Hitting and Drew Kendall. And I watched the one on
- 25:43ones and I thought Kendall was really good. He was
- 25:47going up against that. So they did it this day.
- 25:49They did consecutive stats. You go against the guy, then
- 25:51you go against guy again, and it was him versus
- 25:54Gabe Hall, and his combination of hand usage and footwork
- 25:59was really good.
- 26:00Speaker 1: He was able to.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Punch and then anchor, anchor, anchor, he couldn't. He did
- 26:04not on two consecutive snaps. He's stonewalled Gabe Hale, who's
- 26:08a pretty good athlete. I'm not trying to make Gayball
- 26:09out to be John Carter, but he's a good athlete.
- 26:12And Kendall won on technique and fundamentals more than like
- 26:17athleticism or strength to power. He just had a plan
- 26:20for how to stop Gab Hale and executed it twice,
- 26:23even though on the second rush Gabe tried a little
- 26:25bit of a different move and Kendall was still there.
- 26:27Speaker 1: So I thought that was really good development for that.
- 26:29Speaker 4: It's interesting he mentioned footwork and talking to Drew Kendall
- 26:32a couple of days ago after practice, he mentioned that
- 26:34that was probably the most I guess it was the
- 26:38biggest takeaway from Jeff Stoutlin. Thus far is honing in
- 26:41on the footwork and you can definitely see it when
- 26:43he's out there.
- 26:44Speaker 5: It is noticeable.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and Hitton's been pretty decent, I would say as.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Well, Yeah, yeah, he got his first second team reps
- 26:54through camp to this point.
- 26:55Speaker 1: So let's take an overall look.
- 26:57Speaker 2: We know the starting five r because Steen right now
- 26:59is uncontested right guard. So if you're talking about the
- 27:03first few guys off the bench, you think Lamb right
- 27:06now is running second, He's way, He's absolutely this way.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Or you know, we talked about maybe you'd want
- 27:12to play.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Matt Prior a rat right tackle and keep Kendall Lamb
- 27:15at left hand.
- 27:15Speaker 3: We'll see who. And Pryor was right on money, But
- 27:20to me, Prior will be the first guard off the bench.
- 27:23I think that because a couple of things. Keegan's certainly
- 27:26not that guy yet, Kenny Green is not that guy,
- 27:29Kennel's only a center now, and Darrying Canard I know
- 27:33we could play right tackled right guard, but Kennel Lambs
- 27:36play has started games in the National FOOTBA League at
- 27:38right and left tackle, and Hinton's not ready yet. But
- 27:42prior to me, Prior to me is very valuable. You know,
- 27:44it's interesting if you go back and look when he started.
- 27:47Look he in preseason in twenty one. I was doing
- 27:50some research on playing time for preseason Prior played Prior
- 27:55played guard in twenty twenty one here in the YEP.
- 27:58Speaker 1: I remember that, by the way, right.
- 28:00Speaker 5: Over one thousand snaps last season for the Bears, that
- 28:03right guard. Amazing thousand over a thousand.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Yeah, you'd have to say, I gots give him credit.
- 28:10Speaker 2: On Monday, he turned in the block of the of
- 28:12the practice, so he had a try. He came from
- 28:15he was at right tackle, but he must have been
- 28:17pulling to the left side or trap or whatever it was,
- 28:20but there was a blitzer. I don't think we were
- 28:22able to catch the number, but he put it right
- 28:24into the guy's mid section. I think the guy tried
- 28:27to leave his feet and Prior just drove right into
- 28:30his mid section and knocked him on his ass, which
- 28:32you don't see a whole lot of in even in.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Pads in the practice. So that was a good block
- 28:36by him.
- 28:36Speaker 2: But yeah, if you're looking at backups, you've got I
- 28:39don't know if I would expose hitting the waivers.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I know we always say no, there's.
- 28:42Speaker 2: No chances, So he's making it Kendall's gonna make it
- 28:47prior Lamb. That's that's four right there, So you're starting
- 28:50five those four is nine and then you got to
- 28:53decide are.
- 28:54Speaker 1: You taking Keegan? Are you taking Kenyan Green?
- 28:57Speaker 5: Are you I think it'll be Canard at least right now.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Canard, Yeah, I was gonna throw that in there too,
- 29:03so or do you go real, real heavy, which they've
- 29:07done in the past.
- 29:07Speaker 1: So we'll see what they do there.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Move over to defense, Jahad Campbell continues to, like I said,
- 29:14we said, continues to play pretty much every snap. With
- 29:18Bawn out and with Nikobe Dean out, you're seeing a
- 29:21lot of Jihad Campbell, Trotter and smile Manden Adam and
- 29:26I talked about this the other day Andrew that it
- 29:28just we're not trying to overreact, but it certainly feels
- 29:30like the Eagles are probably in as good of shape
- 29:34at inside linebacker from a no how an athleticism standpoint,
- 29:38a don't embarrass the franchise standpoint, like six or seven
- 29:42years ago, you know, circa probably since I've covered the team,
- 29:46you know, going back to like maybe once they started
- 29:49moving on from Trotter and Trotter Senior.
- 29:52Speaker 4: Well, it's a group that has a very diverse skill
- 29:55set and they all have different strengths. It's funny because
- 29:59you have a be and like Zach Bond, who's at
- 30:01twenty eight years old, the oldest projected starter on defense,
- 30:06and you have some athletic players there as well, that
- 30:09led by Jahid Campbell.
- 30:11Speaker 5: And you know, long, long gone.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Are the days where it was the patchwork approach, the
- 30:17one year prove it deal signings, the late round picks
- 30:20like a Moses Folkoers or what have you. And they've
- 30:23really invested into the position and you're seeing it. They're
- 30:27they're setting it up for the foreseeable future to have,
- 30:29you know, sustained success.
- 30:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's nice to see Adam.
- 30:33Speaker 2: We talked about on the last part his Adam's declaration
- 30:36a couple of years ago twenty twenty two that the
- 30:39Eagles will not embarrass themselves with their linebacker play, and
- 30:42they didn't.
- 30:43Speaker 1: T J Edwards played well.
- 30:44Speaker 3: The fans won't be right, The fans won't be embarrassed.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I mean, yes, yes, will not be embarrassed by the
- 30:49Eagles players.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Promise you, I said, I promise you. I'm telling you
- 30:52They're not gonna be better. Look, Teach, I think it
- 30:54was you know what, Jeff's funny, It was your point
- 30:56that you had the spring you'd heard that he'd really
- 31:00been working on his coverage ability. Well that showed up
- 31:03because he was really bad in coverage when he first
- 31:05got there. I think you had to note that he'd
- 31:07lose weight or something.
- 31:08Speaker 2: He lost a little weight to be a little rangier,
- 31:10and like you say, losing weight doesn't make you a
- 31:12better anything, but it did help him to get to
- 31:16where he wanted to be with the know how that
- 31:18he was getting.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so yeah, I mean there, Well, look zach
- 31:23Baum being a superstar in the making, being a first
- 31:27team All Pro, which is crazy. Trot Junior, by the way,
- 31:30and he's done nothing to not start week one for Nakobe. Now,
- 31:35Campbell's playing the will, Trotter's playing the mic, so that
- 31:39they have to figure out kind of how what that's
- 31:40going to look like. But my point is this, Campbell's
- 31:43coming on. You know, he's he looks great. Trotter's more instinctive.
- 31:48Campbell's relatively new to the position. Typically, if the first
- 31:51round is ready, he doesn't sit. It just doesn't. You
- 31:53just don't the first round of plays in the fifth
- 31:55round wouldn't play. But it's not that easy with this
- 31:57thing because Trotter's did nothing so far, not the play
- 32:00early on. So this one is something to watch as
- 32:02we go along here.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 32:05Speaker 2: True or false, Fellas, josh Uche having a good camp
- 32:09is well, I'll say this, not true or false, good
- 32:12or bad. Josh Ucha having a good camp for the
- 32:15Eagles pass rush? What does that say about the state
- 32:17of the Eagles pass rush?
- 32:18Speaker 1: Andrew?
- 32:20Speaker 5: I mean, he's having had some moments.
- 32:22Speaker 4: I just think that that that's kind of what goes
- 32:25with training camp. You learn about players and their hope.
- 32:28They were probably hoping to get to have him experience
- 32:31a resurgence, and he's had some good moments. They really
- 32:34need him to be, you know, a critical depth piece.
- 32:37So I think that's that's all good.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I feel like it's good for the Eagles,
- 32:42or let me let me put this phrase it differently.
- 32:45It's good for josh Uche, who has not done anything
- 32:47in three years to showcase that he can. He still,
- 32:51as Greg Cosel said, there's something in there and he's
- 32:54showing it in this camp. But at some point, maybe
- 32:58this time next week, when.
- 32:59Speaker 1: We're all potting after the preseason.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Game, we're gonna have to say, hey, you know what,
- 33:03the Eagles pass rush is starting to show up as
- 33:05a as a unit here, not just the flash is
- 33:08because so far it really hasn't been like that.
- 33:11Speaker 4: I Meanjali hasn't done a whole lot in his opportunities,
- 33:16but then again, you know has so I don't know
- 33:19that it says anything other than he's he's really trying
- 33:21to make the most of this opportunity.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and with with Ucha, the past two years a
- 33:26bit of disaster. And let's call it like it is.
- 33:27He's had one productive years twenty two. He's phenomenal with
- 33:31eleven and a half sacks. Pressure rate was really high,
- 33:35and then he just kind of fell off and New
- 33:36England New Orleans didn't want them. He got trade of
- 33:40Kansas City. He couldn't get on the field because he
- 33:42just it he was He played a non man front
- 33:46in New England and New Land and the Chase run
- 33:48of forty three, so it's just a bad fit. Now
- 33:51he's back in a nod man front. He looks good
- 33:53by the way. He's clearly the three as of now now,
- 33:57if Ojala shows up and doesn't in the preseason, could change.
- 34:02Next week, it could change. We're just telling you where
- 34:04we're at here. Uhha, looks better, There's no question. Like
- 34:08the first three days of camp it was all Ojelari
- 34:12and now it's taken the lead here. We'll see where
- 34:15this goes.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Absolutely, Jlex Hunt was owned by Jordan Mylott. I meant
- 34:21to say on the one on Wondrells, Now that doesn't
- 34:23necessarily mean anything. I was actually more impressed with my Lot,
- 34:25who's really come a long way in these one on Wondrills,
- 34:29because you know, his technique was always he's always a
- 34:32big dude who was a great athlete. But now the
- 34:34technique and the footwork is really coming along as he
- 34:37gets up. But he really he gave Jaylex Hunt a
- 34:39lot of issues in the one on Wondrills.
- 34:41Speaker 1: So we'll monitor this.
- 34:43Speaker 2: We'll keep talking about the past rush and the state
- 34:45of it as as practices go along. All right, So
- 34:49at corner, obviously all the attention on Killey Ringo versus
- 34:54Adri Jackson Andrew has has Eli. Rix said, hold on,
- 34:59I'm entering the conversation here because he's had some nice practices.
- 35:03Speaker 4: I don't I don't know if we're quite to that point,
- 35:05and but Vic said, yeah, he can this morning or
- 35:08Monday morning when he spoke entered the conversation. But he
- 35:12has to be a little bit more consistent day to day.
- 35:15He's had the last couple of practices a lot of
- 35:18pass breakups against Elijah Cooks. Has been kind of must watch.
- 35:21Two big framed players fighting for the football, using their
- 35:25body to their advantage. And he's had the better. He's
- 35:28gotten the better of Cooks in those matchups, and he's
- 35:30playing with a lot more confidence. I wrote a story
- 35:32about him on Inside the Birds dot com ballas is
- 35:35the second year in the defense. He's sort of playing
- 35:38a lot faster and more aggressive, and he's trying to
- 35:41be more physical. He's not the biggest guy in the world.
- 35:43He has a wiry bill, but he's trying to you know,
- 35:47you could see it against with receivers, but also in
- 35:49the in the running game as well, try to throw
- 35:51his body in there to make some plays.
- 35:54Speaker 2: The question would be as their room for him, you know,
- 35:57ticically keep about five corners, right he's on.
- 36:01Speaker 3: I think we'll be on the team specials specials really
- 36:05counts and that that's you know, that's going to help him, right?
- 36:08Speaker 2: Well, does are you saying that Andrew thinking that both
- 36:11Jackson and Ringo make it no matter what, or that
- 36:15only one of those two are going to make it?
- 36:17Speaker 4: I think in general, regardless that they've proven they kept
- 36:20six last year. Rix was on the roster last year
- 36:23as the six, and he didn't really play any special teams.
- 36:27He played about fifty one snaps over seven games. They
- 36:31like him as a coverage player and he's a developmental
- 36:33type of guy. Eventually, they're going to have to start
- 36:36paying their defensive players and you can't necessarily go heavy
- 36:39and throw out a lot of money for depth pieces,
- 36:41and he kind of gives you some cost effective depth.
- 36:44He's a twenty three year old corner who can cover
- 36:46a little bit. I mean at the NFL level, that's
- 36:49those players coming to premium.
- 36:51Speaker 3: But now Rix didn't play because we talked last year
- 36:53that the staff didn't like him at all. They buried
- 36:55him as soon as they got him. That's why he
- 36:57But when he plays, he's going to play on special teams.
- 36:59That's most likely. If he makes it, he's it's gonna
- 37:02be hard he just doesn't run well enough. But the
- 37:04thing that I loved about him two years ago, they
- 37:06he did everything they asked, right the former staff, all
- 37:11things that he probably had had didn't think he'd have
- 37:13to do. He did it because they need him to
- 37:15do it. That matters, man. That that's when you accept
- 37:18you know, when you play for Nick Saban, that has
- 37:20something to do with it that you you you do
- 37:23your job. But Rix has got some value in this league.
- 37:25He has some value. Ideally he's a fourth corner. But
- 37:29that's okay, that's that's that'd be fine for him.
- 37:32Speaker 2: So I guess you can keep him without going over six. Right,
- 37:36you would keep Dejene, you would keep Mitchell, you would keep.
- 37:40Speaker 3: Jean's not a corner though they don't cut them as
- 37:42the corner.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm six is a combination of Nichols and outsides.
- 37:46They're not gonna keep six outside corners. I'm talking about
- 37:50just in general and Nicholas.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Heen, Mitchell, mac McWilliams, maybe Dori Jackson or whoever, and
- 37:57Eli Rix.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess that could work. That can work.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Now they would have to go light maybe somewhere else,
- 38:02but they could do that because I think last year
- 38:04they went a little lighter at DT than they had
- 38:07in the past, So we'll see how the numbers work
- 38:09their way out there, all right, Anything else on defense
- 38:13that jumped out to you, Andrew.
- 38:17Speaker 5: Smile.
- 38:18Speaker 4: Mandan is a physical player, despite what his frame might
- 38:22suggest at six foot two, two hundred and twenty five pounds,
- 38:25he's rangy, he's sidelined a sideline type of speed. But
- 38:28he made a nice play attacking downhill and tagging Saquon
- 38:31Barkley on a running play, and I think that really
- 38:34showcases his physicality that he brings.
- 38:37Speaker 5: He's caught my eye the last few practices, all right.
- 38:41Speaker 2: And obviously we're seeing Cooper de Gene also, by the way,
- 38:44in a lot of bass. I mean he's I think
- 38:46the whole outside corner and base thing is done. I
- 38:49mean he's just basically playing safety now in bass and
- 38:51then nickel and nickel.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Yeah, any outside corner, have.
- 38:55Speaker 5: You no no outside this summer.
- 38:57Speaker 4: I also think we should outline Quinnon Mitchell peeling off
- 39:01his receiver and making a nice play to intercept Tanner
- 39:04McKee when it was the second team offense versus the starters. Yeah,
- 39:08this is the guy who didn't have any interceptions in
- 39:09the regular season a year ago, and he's made a
- 39:12conscious effort if you've listened to what he had to
- 39:14say about trying to be able to secure those this year.
- 39:17He's had two this summer and that really showcases instincts
- 39:20and ability to make a play on the ball.
- 39:23Speaker 3: So before we get out of here, this is the
- 39:24not from a scouting standpoint, he fought the ball at Toledo.
- 39:27He just that was the one thing you can say
- 39:30lack of ball production. But there's a reason you have
- 39:32to have to have context. We give context on the
- 39:34show from scouting standpoint. The tape showed because we talked
- 39:38to scouts who had that area. He fight the football.
- 39:40He did. That's why he was at a receiver, right. He
- 39:43just was not natural at it. But as Andrew just said,
- 39:46he's working at it. It's starting to show, and it's anticipation,
- 39:49it's it's route recognition. But when you have it, it's securing
- 39:53it and feeling comfortable with it. Like you it's like
- 39:56anything you do in sports, the more you do it,
- 39:59the more you get comfort with it. This is really
- 40:01the next evolution because everything else is elite. He's got
- 40:04to be better with the ball.
- 40:06Speaker 1: So I wonder how much because I like these concentration drills.
- 40:08Speaker 2: They're doing where you get three footballs with color coded
- 40:12footballs thrown out to you and you have to catch
- 40:14the one of the color that they tell you, which
- 40:17I've seen this in baseball hitting, where you throw three
- 40:20balls up and you tell them to hit the specific
- 40:22one right where it helps you isolate the one thing
- 40:25and get your hands on it.
- 40:26Speaker 1: As fast as possible.
- 40:28Speaker 2: I think they're doing that with all the corners, right
- 40:29Andrew that drill with the color different colored footballs. Yeah, so,
- 40:34and because a couple of them have mentioned how much
- 40:37that has helped, like eye, hand coordination and concentration.
- 40:40Speaker 1: So if it's working, that's great, good for them. Awesome.
- 40:43Speaker 2: All right, before we get out of here, just a
- 40:45little bit of what to expect with starters playing in
- 40:49the preseason there we've talked about this. Defensive players who
- 40:53are potential starters are absolutely going to have to play
- 40:56in the first preseason game because right now, Vicky said
- 41:00he needed evaluation on Monday at a press conference, and
- 41:03he needs to see certain guys.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Yes, by the way, last year this is there was
- 41:06a change, so Beckton. I'm gonna look at both sides.
- 41:09I did. I went back to you know, I went
- 41:11back and researched this. So Nick has kind of changed
- 41:13it over the years. This is what you were talking about, Jeff.
- 41:16Last year, Beckton played on offense in the first game,
- 41:18some starters played on defense in the first game set
- 41:21game two, all backups on offense, some starters on defense.
- 41:25Bond was one of them. Now, I think with Bond
- 41:28it wasn't that they didn't know he was going to start.
- 41:30They needed to get They needed to see him in
- 41:32game just in games and then game three, none of
- 41:35the starters played in twenty twenty three. It was all backups.
- 41:39As a matter of fact, they have the joint practice
- 41:41with Cleveland here in Philly, So if you have joints,
- 41:45you typically don't need to play starters. Right. Well, well
- 41:48more on this than the next show. I just wanted
- 41:49to bring that up because early in Knick's career, man,
- 41:52he was mixing and matching starters some weeks, some not.
- 41:56It just depended on what they felt they needed to see.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I remember very clearly Nick saying two years
- 42:03ago that those practices against the Browns were so intense
- 42:07and got so many reps in that he felt like,
- 42:10like you said that, they didn't need any time in
- 42:13that preseason game.
- 42:14Speaker 1: So but this is a differ.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, well, there's there's no joint practice with
- 42:18the Bengals, and then secondly, there are so many jobs
- 42:21up for grabs, you know. Vic Vick even said it
- 42:23at the press conference. I need to see these guys
- 42:25play reps.
- 42:25Speaker 3: So that's it. You're right, that's why you should do it.
- 42:28And with the Cleveland because remember talking to the Browns,
- 42:31they felt like the Eagles took it to them in
- 42:33Bria the year before, and I would say it's true
- 42:35being there and I was the former NFL had coach.
- 42:38I ran into there said the same thing. So that
- 42:40the Eagles beat the hell out of them, and the
- 42:42Browns didn't forget it because they brought it. They actually
- 42:45did some planning for that. Typically you don't. You just
- 42:47you you're running certain drills and plays. You let the opponent,
- 42:50you let your team the Eagles, hey, this is what
- 42:52we want to do. They brought a little something because
- 42:55they egos kicked their ass there. That's that's probably one
- 42:58of the times you could see the Gals had something
- 43:00srucial going on. Usually you don't see that. Usually you
- 43:02can't tell that much. But the Eagles kick their ass
- 43:05in twenty two in Train to Camp very good.
- 43:08Speaker 2: All right, So that's a little bit of a preview
- 43:10of what to uh perhaps expect when the Eagles played
- 43:13the Bengals Thursday night. But we'll have more on that
- 43:16later this week. That's gonna do it for this episode
- 43:18of Inside the Birds, the leading podcast and the Eagles
- 43:22Intel for Andrew to Checko and Adam Kaplan.
- 43:24Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Thanks for flying with us Inside the Birds.
