- 0:16Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20All right, I wanted to let you guys know that I watched Baby
- 0:24Reindeer. My brother and I just finished
- 0:26it last night and I considered recapping it on today's mini
- 0:31Scroll, but I already had three stories and I just don't know
- 0:34where to insert like content updates.
- 0:38I don't know if I should do like a full episode recapping it.
- 0:41So let me know, slide into my DMS, leave a comment, whatever.
- 0:45Let me know if you guys want content recaps again.
- 0:48And if you want to hear me talk about baby reindeer.
- 0:50I don't know if it will be in like a deep dive or mini scroll,
- 0:54whatever. But if you want to hear from me
- 0:56about it, let me know. All right, the first story that
- 0:59I have for you guys today is a very sad one.
- 1:02So TikTok star Eva Evans has passed away at the age of 29.
- 1:07It's been a rough week for the TikTok community as another
- 1:10prolific creator has passed away too soon.
- 1:13Eva Evans, a popular TikTok creator who posted about her
- 1:16life in NYC, has passed away at the age of 29.
- 1:19Eva's passing was announced by her two sisters, Zoe and Lila
- 1:22Joy, they wrote. Quote Yesterday my family
- 1:25received news that our sweet, fabulous, creative, caring,
- 1:28hilarious Eva, my beautiful sister, has died after 24 hours.
- 1:33I still find myself in a constant cycle of denial and
- 1:35acceptance, so I know how unbelievable and hard to process
- 1:39this news will be. So when Eva wasn't building her
- 1:41brand on TikTok, she was a filmmaker, having directed and
- 1:45starred in the Amazon Prime Video web series called Club
- 1:48Rat. Club Rat rolled out last year
- 1:50with five episodes and saw Eva play an influencer who was
- 1:54navigating dating in New York City after a chaotic and viral
- 1:57breakup. So many New York City
- 2:00influencers and personalities have paid tribute to Eva online,
- 2:03including Julia Fox, who said Eva always stuck up for her, and
- 2:07photographer Ashley Armtage, who wrote quote.
- 2:10Eva was smart, hilarious, creative, caring, magnetic
- 2:13confidence. She said on Instagram.
- 2:15She moved through the world loving and laughing at
- 2:18everything. So sad.
- 2:20And like I said last week, I really consider how to report on
- 2:25death and if I'm going to report on people passing away on this
- 2:29podcast. But I feel like when they are a
- 2:33prolific creator that has made an impact like clearly Eva had,
- 2:37then I think it's important to kind of pay tribute to that and,
- 2:41you know, touch on her legacy. So very, very sad.
- 2:44All right, the next story that I have for you guys is that Brit
- 2:47Smith has set the record straight on JoJo Siwa allegedly
- 2:51stealing her song Karma. So singer-songwriter and model
- 2:55Britt Smith has finally addressed the accusations that
- 2:58JoJo Siwa stole her song Karma. JoJo released Karma earlier this
- 3:02month as her first kind of grown up single.
- 3:05As we know, Jojo's rebrand has been highly criticized, as has
- 3:09her new music. One of the most contentious
- 3:12parts of this rebrand is that it turned out that JoJo single
- 3:16Karma was actually a song that was originally performed by
- 3:19Britt Smith in 2012. So somebody leaked the Vimo
- 3:23music video of Britt initially singing this song, the music
- 3:26video from it, and then Britt actually released the song
- 3:30herself. I don't know how I feel about
- 3:32that move but I also understand just from like your own personal
- 3:36perspective wanting to capitalize on this moment.
- 3:39Like TikTok users were so excited to hear Britt's version
- 3:42and many people said that it was better than Jojo's so I
- 3:45understand wanting to release it.
- 3:48OK so this all led to accusations that JoJo stole
- 3:52Britt's song. So there is so much
- 3:55misinformation going around about Jojo's rebrand and so many
- 4:00people are accusing her of lying about writing her own songs,
- 4:03which she has never said. And in relation to karma, she
- 4:08actually spoke about her first reaction the first time that she
- 4:12heard the song in an interview with Billboard.
- 4:15So she talked about like the lyrics that were presented to
- 4:18her and how she felt about singing that song.
- 4:21In my opinion, that makes it pretty clear she didn't write
- 4:23the song. So after weeks of JoJo being
- 4:26dragged, some of it is rightfully so.
- 4:28Okay. Like I'm not trying to be a JoJo
- 4:30apologist but I just feel like we need to operate off of facts.
- 4:34And when it comes to Jojos rebrand nobody wants to hear the
- 4:37facts. They just have so many feelings
- 4:40about it and they're just throwing things out and claiming
- 4:42that she is like lying about this or doing that when none of
- 4:45that is true. So Britt Smith has taken to
- 4:49TikTok to talk about or address JoJo, quote, UN quote, stealing
- 4:53her song. She said, I'm here to set the
- 4:55record straight once and for all.
- 4:56JoJo did not steal my song. There's been a lot of talk and a
- 4:59lot of comments and they just keep going.
- 5:00So I thought, let me come on here and hopefully put an end to
- 5:03this. She was totally in the right to
- 5:05record her version. And I hate to see that anybody
- 5:07would think I'm a part of any kind of bullying or anything
- 5:09like that. I was bullied in high school and
- 5:12I know what that feels like. And I would never want to be
- 5:14thought to be any part of that. I just want to make it clear
- 5:17that JoJo has done nothing wrong to me.
- 5:20Also, just to say on the other side of that, I'm so grateful to
- 5:23you guys for the support and love you showed me on my
- 5:25version. Somebody unearthed it from 12
- 5:28years ago on Vimo, my video. And it has been a crazy
- 5:30whirlwind since the last week. And then Britt basically
- 5:33finished by saying she is releasing an EP kind of off the
- 5:36back of all of this love and support on May 17th.
- 5:39So I am glad that she has addressed this.
- 5:41There have been lots of people in the music industry that have
- 5:43come forward saying there's no way that JoJo like stole this
- 5:46song. She obviously had permission and
- 5:48the rights to record this. But then if you guys have seen
- 5:51any of that content, you'll see that in like Twitter, tick tock
- 5:54comments, whatever. People are just going off being
- 5:56like, there's no way or like, I don't care.
- 5:58She stole Brit's song. Brit did it better just not
- 6:01believing that JoJo didn't steal the song.
- 6:04That would be just highly illegal.
- 6:06Like she is so visible. She is very, very famous.
- 6:10She did not do this with the proper kind of procedures in
- 6:13place, the processes in place. But anyways, so that puts that
- 6:17to bed. JoJo did not steal this song.
- 6:20She obviously had permission and the rights to record her own
- 6:23version of it. And the last story that I have
- 6:25for you guys is a little update on the watcher situation from
- 6:28yesterday. So following backlash from their
- 6:30audience after the announcement that they would be pay walling
- 6:33all of their content moving forward, YouTube creators
- 6:36Watcher Entertainment is back with an update.
- 6:39In a new video posted today, Watcher creators Steven Lim,
- 6:42Ryan Vergara, and Shane Mage said they quote messed up and
- 6:46are taking the feedback seriously.
- 6:49So they started this video by apologizing for their previous
- 6:52video, which they posted on Friday.
- 6:54They apologized to their audience for not making it clear
- 6:57how important the Watcher viewers are to them and for
- 7:00failing to acknowledge that the viewers are really the reason
- 7:02that they have a platform to begin with.
- 7:05And then they went on to say sorry for implying that the
- 7:07price of 599 a month, which is what their paywall content will
- 7:11cost, is an amount of money that anyone can afford.
- 7:15Now, the creators have made some changes off the back of this
- 7:18feedback. They said that they will keep
- 7:21all of their content for free on YouTube and for those who have
- 7:25signed up for their subscription service for their pay walled
- 7:27content, they will just get access to that content one month
- 7:31earlier and ad free. And finally, they addressed why
- 7:34they chose to launch their own platform.
- 7:36Basically, they said it's been difficult to stay relevant to
- 7:38advertisers as the YouTube landscape has changed.
- 7:41And I don't know if this is true or not, But they said, and it
- 7:45sounded pretty honest, that if they hadn't chosen to go with
- 7:49this model, like if they were just going to stick to what they
- 7:50were doing with YouTube and their Patreon, they would have
- 7:53either had to lay off a bunch of their staff or they would have
- 7:56had to just close the Watcher Entertainment company
- 7:59altogether. And they didn't want to do that.
- 8:00They wanted to give it its best shot.
- 8:03So that's the update on that. I think it's pretty rare that we
- 8:07see people flip flop so easily. So maybe I will take back what I
- 8:11said yesterday, which is that they knew how much of their
- 8:16audience would not sign up to it.
- 8:19I mean, maybe they still did, but I just feel like the
- 8:22immediate flip flop, it's either because the backlash was so
- 8:26intense and so unexpected, which I think is part of that.
- 8:28And like I was saying yesterday, the fact that they got like all
- 8:31this mainstream press over it in like a negative way, I'm sure
- 8:35impacted their decision to do this.
- 8:37But then also, so I feel like they're kind of flip flop tells
- 8:41me maybe this wasn't a very thought through decision.
- 8:43I don't know. Anyways, guys, that is it for
- 8:47mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 8:50Please remember to rate review and subscribe.
- 8:52I love you guys so much and I will talk to you guys tomorrow.
- 8:56Bye.
