- 0:00We didn't know that we were going to be writing a love
- 0:01letter to Subaru, but here we are.
- 0:03Today on that car show, it's me, it's Lindsay, and it's our press
- 0:08car showdown. We've driven so many cars
- 0:11recently. We talk about them all.
- 0:13We pick a few winners and maybe even a loser or two.
- 0:16Stay tuned. This is a good one.
- 0:18It's that car show. Welcome back to that car show.
- 0:22I'm Lindsay and this week Ryan and I are hanging out and we
- 0:27have a crew show with a little bit of a different spin because
- 0:31between the two of us, we have driven an absolutely ridiculous
- 0:34number of cars over the last few months.
- 0:36Between press loans, which are a week long loan of the car to us
- 0:42and then automotive media events where at least for both of us,
- 0:46we've driven groups of cars, many cars over one day or two
- 0:51days. So we have a lot to talk about
- 0:54and we thought we'd do something a little different.
- 0:56We're going to put our press cars up against each other and
- 0:59then at the end we'll crown, let's see, 10 winners.
- 1:02We may add some categories as we go along, completely arbitrary,
- 1:07but of course extremely important categories.
- 1:09So yeah. Funny funny thing, Lindsay, when
- 1:12these companies give you cars to drive, they they expect you to
- 1:15create content, right And so. Right.
- 1:18They would like a little coverage or discussion.
- 1:20A. Few boxes and and much like you,
- 1:22there are there are cars that surprise me one way or the
- 1:25other, right? Right.
- 1:28And I think that's the most fun. Shockers.
- 1:31Right, like who's you know at least or not The not the least
- 1:36surprise will be us probably. But yeah, I think that's what
- 1:40keeps it interesting too, is when you're getting into like a
- 1:44new press car, either knowing you're going to spend the week
- 1:47with it or you have 30 minutes, or you have however many, you
- 1:50know, 20 minutes, whatever. A lot of times you think you
- 1:54know how you're going to feel about it or you have a
- 1:56preconceived notion. And I think what I have started
- 2:00really paying attention to, especially when it's an event
- 2:03where you're driving, you know, 8/10/15 cars in one day is what
- 2:09stands out. Or like, what is the car where
- 2:11you find yourself going like, oh, I have to get out of this
- 2:14one and go drive 6 more, but I really just want to keep driving
- 2:17this one. Or oh, 30 minutes was too long
- 2:20with that one and I really thought I was going to fall in
- 2:22love with it. So I think that's what keeps it
- 2:25interesting. And it's one thing I have found
- 2:27too. And I don't know if you find
- 2:29yourself doing this and it's purely by chance, but whatever
- 2:34you have turned in you, you sort of naturally find yourself
- 2:39comparing to the next one. Yes, yes, yes, it's.
- 2:43You know, and sometimes they're very different from each other.
- 2:45So it's like it's not a comparison, but it colors or it
- 2:48informs, shall I say, how you feel about whatever comes next.
- 2:53Yeah, it's kind of like dating. There are flings here, right?
- 2:55There are, I think that's the classy way of putting it, right?
- 3:00Exactly. There are long term
- 3:02relationships and there are longer term relationships.
- 3:06And you know, some cars, I think you, you know, to your point,
- 3:10some cars that drive exactly like you think they're going to
- 3:12drive, right, right. And others that drive nothing
- 3:16like you think they're going to drive and like.
- 3:18Good and bad where you're like, I did not imagine falling in
- 3:22love with this. I mean, again, much like dating.
- 3:24Like no, no. And much like dating, money
- 3:27factors into it. And the expensive cars are
- 3:29oftentimes not the ones you want to marry, right?
- 3:32So, right, I don't want to turn this into a big game of, you
- 3:36know, kill, Yeah, but it's kind of like, maybe that's what we
- 3:40should do with these. But I know I'm like we have just
- 3:43spontaneously changed our. Let's stick to the original,
- 3:47original plan, but. Save that, we can consider that
- 3:50for maybe a future episode if we want to go there.
- 3:53That's that'll be the after hours episode.
- 3:56We're all drunk. But but yeah, it's, it's
- 3:58interesting because you know, you mentioned, you know, some of
- 4:00these we, we had, you know, press cars are usually given to
- 4:03us for a week. Right.
- 4:04Standard press loan is a week long, yeah.
- 4:06Yeah, and you're given roughly 500 miles unofficially and you
- 4:10know, sometimes then we'll, you know, I've been known for taking
- 4:13them, you know, couple 1000 miles, right, holidays, that
- 4:17kind of thing. Yeah, you have been lucky to
- 4:19like do some real Rd. tripping in them, which is pretty
- 4:22special. Those are the ones at the end of
- 4:24their press fleet lives right where they like.
- 4:27They don't care anymore. Like you know what?
- 4:29Sure. You mentioned you know these
- 4:31press, these group drives that we do.
- 4:33I'm a part of the Rocky Mountain Automotive press great group.
- 4:36Give them a shout out. You are a member of.
- 4:38I can never. Remember Question.
- 4:39Automotive Press Association, otherwise known as NAWAPA.
- 4:43Nawapa. Yes, which they do fantastic.
- 4:47I know, right. Please, if you have NAWAPA for
- 4:49more than four hours, please consult a medical professional.
- 4:52That's it. Now that we've gotten the
- 4:53disclaimer out of the way and we've kept legal happy.
- 4:56Yeah, yeah. So they do events, I mean, and I
- 5:00think it's similar ish. And we've had some like cross
- 5:03pollination with some of the manufacturer reps where they've
- 5:06run into you and then the next week they're with me and that's
- 5:08always fun. But.
- 5:11You'll you'll find that people often times glom on like the
- 5:14journalists, like everyone sort of by the end of the day is
- 5:16trying to drive that one car or those two cars again.
- 5:19And the others sit sort of forlorn, forlornly I think is
- 5:22the word, you know, off of the corner somewhere.
- 5:24But but yeah, that's just a little explanation of what these
- 5:26are. It's a chance to to have short
- 5:28stints or flings with lots of different cars.
- 5:31What is it Speed dating? That's speed dating some.
- 5:34Speed dating. Yeah.
- 5:36Well, and it's been interesting because I did, you know, we've
- 5:39talked about, I went to the NAWAPA event in the spring,
- 5:42which is called Mudfest because it is often quite muddy.
- 5:45And that one is a different format than the event that they
- 5:48just had. Their fall event is called Drive
- 5:50Revolution, and that one was created to showcase electric
- 5:55vehicles, but they have both internal combustion and electric
- 5:58and hybrids and all manner of events.
- 6:01But the format is very different because Mudfest, it's like first
- 6:06come, first serve in a friendly way because you just go, the
- 6:09cars are lined up and you just go and everybody grabs what they
- 6:12need. And you, it's on you to make
- 6:14sure that you have driven every vehicle.
- 6:15Because that's one of the, you know, tenets of the event is the
- 6:19manufacturers are going to the trouble to bring them.
- 6:21And the journalists are expected to experience all of them, which
- 6:23is. And you probably vote, right.
- 6:25And because we're voting too. Yeah.
- 6:27So it needs to be an informed vote, obviously.
- 6:30But for Drive Revolution, you get a 30 minute stint with each
- 6:34car and you have a schedule. And so, you know, exactly like,
- 6:37OK, I'm in this, next, I'm in this.
- 6:39So it's a different set up, you know, and obviously you could
- 6:43get more time, you could go back to a car.
- 6:45At the end of the day, they're willing to make that happen.
- 6:47But yeah, it's very different than getting to live with a car
- 6:51for the week. Also, let's just stop for a
- 6:55moment and think back to our 12 year old selves and if our 12
- 6:58year old selves knew that someday car companies would be
- 7:01dropping cars off at your home and then inviting you to events
- 7:06where you know you can just do whatever you want.
- 7:08You know, your little heart desires with their their fleet.
- 7:11It's pretty cool. So we're very fortunate and and
- 7:13you know, it's a responsibility. I I think we don't take lightly.
- 7:16We want to keep these cars coming.
- 7:18That said too, I think we have some some real authentic insight
- 7:22into these cars right that. Yeah.
- 7:25Again, maybe some surprises so. Yeah, it's been funny.
- 7:28Like I've been lucky to get some press loans in Southern
- 7:32California when I'm with my family.
- 7:34And so it's been funny. At some point, I think, you
- 7:36know, the third or fourth car had been dropped off or picked
- 7:39up or whatever, and people were kind of taking me aside and
- 7:42going like, all right, what is, how are you doing this?
- 7:45Why are they just giving you these cars?
- 7:48Yeah, it's, it's it's it's a hack.
- 7:52I guess right, but that. Said, you know, we do create
- 7:54content with this stuff and, and, but we've had so many
- 7:57lately, we just figured it's time to actually do a show
- 7:59dedicated to these things. Solely pressed cars, I know and
- 8:02like you said, I mean, this is something that's I think we've
- 8:05all been working towards. And so it's you have these
- 8:07moments of like, wait, we're there.
- 8:09We did it. Yeah.
- 8:11Yeah. You know, and like I was really
- 8:13lucky to drive a press car to and from Drive Revolution, which
- 8:17was in Portland. So I got to spend, you know,
- 8:20about 8 hours in it there and back.
- 8:22And like, like you've done, you know, this was more of a mini
- 8:25road trip to, compared to what you do, but really got some good
- 8:28time in it. And that was one of the cars
- 8:30where I went. You know, I had the opportunity
- 8:33to switch cars at the event and drive back in a different one,
- 8:36and I said, you know what, I really love the one that I had,
- 8:39so I'm gonna drive that one back and then I'll get the other one
- 8:42the next. Day, yeah, absolutely.
- 8:44And in Full disclosure, you know, these cars are dropped off
- 8:46with a full tank. We return them generally with a
- 8:48full tank, right? Or with an EV you know.
- 8:51Try to be good citizens. Try.
- 8:52To be good citizens, keep them clean.
- 8:54You know, first start getting these cars.
- 8:55I would like wash them, you know, before I return them.
- 8:58Oh yeah. I would take it and vacuum it
- 8:59out, yeah. They're vacuumed out.
- 9:01I will say, I will say that. But any case, we're very lucky
- 9:03and really, you know, between the two of us, we've driven a
- 9:05pretty wide spectrum of stuff, you know, from pretty workaday
- 9:10stuff, you know, budget minded stuff to some some damn near
- 9:13exotic stuff. So.
- 9:15So where do we start? We get into it.
- 9:17I know, I know. Well and I know we talked about,
- 9:19you know, several of the ones that we've had over the summer
- 9:22in the last few months when we had Lynn Woodward join us over
- 9:24the summer. So this is we're kind of picking
- 9:27up where we left off with Lynn because the cars have kept
- 9:30coming, which we're thrilled about.
- 9:33Yeah. I mean we've had so the press
- 9:35cars that I've had, so the week long loans, I had the Genesis
- 9:38G80, the Lucid Air, the Ionic 5 from Hyundai.
- 9:43I had the Mazda CX5 that was the one that I Rd. tripped to
- 9:46Portland. I had the Honda Tucson pH EV or
- 9:50P Hib. I'm not sure how they're doing
- 9:52that. The Mazda 3 hatchback, Mazda
- 9:55CX90 which is the three row SUV and then the Acura Integra and
- 10:01then Ryan. Which ones have you had for your
- 10:03week long? Yeah, so I've had a chance to
- 10:05drive most of those, some of them just at press events, week
- 10:08long stuff recently. The Subaru Trail Seeker, this is
- 10:11their EV that's kind of like an electric Forrester or Outback
- 10:15for a but we'll get into that. I have a lot of.
- 10:17Thoughts on the trail Seeker 1? Is that one a three row?
- 10:20I don't think so, no, no. And I, I should probably have
- 10:25the the Subaru, which probably bring up the web page because
- 10:27there are so many models and there's so much crossover, no
- 10:32pun intended. And and so there's also a larger
- 10:37car, but but yeah, interesting thing the the BRZTS manual.
- 10:43So the TS is the track prepped BRZ.
- 10:47This one was manual if they're all manual in TS form or not.
- 10:51But it's got the big Brembo brakes and some other toys.
- 10:54I really enjoyed that. I've got the Outback wilderness
- 10:58currently. Fantastic.
- 11:00Let me correct. I had the forester because I'm
- 11:03I'm struggling picking them out in a in a line up.
- 11:07Well, we both had the Forester Wilderness.
- 11:10Early we had that earlier as well that's that that's right
- 11:13that's right had the genesis G90 prestige black the last time I
- 11:16was in LA had the Toyota 4 runner trail hunter and I've got
- 11:21some some strong opinions both ways on that had that for a long
- 11:25term and we. Both had that, actually.
- 11:28Yeah, that's right. Yeah, that's.
- 11:29Right. That's, that's compare notes on
- 11:31that. Yeah.
- 11:32I was also of course on the Colorado Grand about a week ago
- 11:35and managed the AMG fleet that Mercedes-Benz.
- 11:39Fantastic, the. Sponsor brings so that had.
- 11:42Quality time with them. Everything from the lowest end
- 11:45of AMG, the CLA45 AMG up through the SL 63 E performance.
- 11:51This is the hybrid that's got close to 1100 LB feet of torque
- 11:55and I think 800 and some odd horsepower.
- 11:57So any case that that's our baseline, that's kind of what
- 11:59we're working with here. What's our first category?
- 12:03OK, so first category, well, let's do let's see.
- 12:09OK, so first category is best internal combustion vehicle.
- 12:14So the BRZTS, the GR Corolla, yeah, the Mazda MX5 Miata, the
- 12:21Acura Integra, which is a manual as well.
- 12:24Super fun. Oh man, that's.
- 12:26A good yeah. And the Genesis G80, the Genesis
- 12:30G90, the 4 Runner Trail Hunter, the Ram TRX and the Dodge
- 12:36Charger. So those are those are the
- 12:39contenders for the best internal combustion vehicle, exclusively
- 12:44internal combustion. Yes, yes.
- 12:45So yeah, what are your thoughts? I really love that Integra.
- 12:51That's the one I would I would bring home.
- 12:52That's the one I would marry. It's got one of the best manual
- 12:55transmissions in the world. It is a car like it.
- 12:59We forget how good cars are. We're so used to like, you know,
- 13:02being these jacked up SUV's and crossovers.
- 13:07A good car. There's nothing better than just
- 13:08a good car with a good manual transmission.
- 13:10A sport sedan, if you will. A term you don't see or don't
- 13:13hear that that often anymore, right?
- 13:16That's a that's a car I've priced out like that's a car I I
- 13:20would buy if I had to have one car that would do it all.
- 13:23I think it would be that one. I think a very close second is
- 13:26that GR Corolla for many of the same reasons.
- 13:29The Acura is just much more refined.
- 13:31It's a much more refined experience.
- 13:33The GR Corolla, I think would be almost more of a weekend car,
- 13:35right? For sure.
- 13:36But those are the two in that list that that really stood out
- 13:40for me. What about?
- 13:41You. So first place for you would be
- 13:43the Acura Integra and then second place would be the.
- 13:46I think so. Are you looking for a third
- 13:47place as well? No, I mean we can.
- 13:50Do you have a? 3rd 2 that.
- 13:51You wanted to. What are my options again?
- 13:54Let me look. Let me.
- 13:54Look PRZ yeah, GR Corolla, the MX5 Miata, Integra, G80G90,
- 14:02Trail Hunter, the 4 Runner Trail Hunter, TRX and the Charger.
- 14:06So I have thoughts on on all those cars we can get detail.
- 14:10But if I had to pick a third place, give me that Genesis G90
- 14:13that I had out in LA. That is, it's like an S class.
- 14:17It's like a, you know, a budget Bentley.
- 14:19It's just a great thing to to just bounce around LA and it's
- 14:22big. It's quiet, it softly sprung, it
- 14:25has a kicking audio system. You know, it's it's like kind of
- 14:29all the all the good things about something like an S class,
- 14:32but without any of the hang ups of the badge, right.
- 14:35I think most people still don't know what a Genesis is.
- 14:38No, it's very. Still.
- 14:39So it's kind of like you want to fly under the radar.
- 14:42Yeah, yeah. So yeah, That that that's a car
- 14:45that I secretly enjoy. Well, not so secretly enjoy.
- 14:48I've gone on about how. Much publicly and lovely.
- 14:51Yeah, yeah. But I mean, that's just a car I
- 14:53would probably never buy because it's just but you know, maybe in
- 14:57my retirement years. That said, I don't know if I was
- 15:00like a Hollywood agent, like her own Michael Lasas, that would
- 15:04sort of be the that would be kind of the the low key card of
- 15:07that. Would be the move.
- 15:09That would be the move, right? You know, you make no apologies
- 15:12for it. You know, it's it's it's a
- 15:16pretty cool thing. But yeah, those are probably the
- 15:18three that stick out as most memorable to me.
- 15:20What? What about you?
- 15:22Yeah, I realize looking at the list I am going to need a first,
- 15:24second and third option. And one thing you know, looking
- 15:29at the G80 and the G90 reminded me that when the G80 was being
- 15:34dropped off, I had it over the summer and I had it and they I
- 15:39was trying to find the color because it was like it was the
- 15:42best combination. I had it and it was a light Gray
- 15:45Vatina Gray with Sevilla red interior.
- 15:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. And holy cow, that is not the
- 15:52ultimate color combination because it's again, it's very
- 15:55stealth. It looks lovely and elegant on
- 15:57the outside. And then you open the door and
- 15:58see that red interior and I just every time I open the door, I
- 16:02smiled and you just feel like you are in a very special space.
- 16:06So just from the start, yes before you even start driving
- 16:09it, you're like, this is this is pretty special.
- 16:12And I think it's worth noting that when the the person from
- 16:18the fleet company was dropping it off, he said, you know, and
- 16:21they get to drive anything and everything all the time, all day
- 16:25long. That is their job to drive cars.
- 16:27So he said of all the cars that we get to drive, Genesis is
- 16:32killing it. He's like, anytime I find out
- 16:33that I'm going to be moving a Genesis, I am excited and the
- 16:38they are so impressive. They're doing such good work
- 16:41like and I think you like to your point, they're not really
- 16:45getting the attention yet. I think people are starting to
- 16:48catch on, but it's such a special product and you know.
- 16:54I will say. They look great.
- 16:56Yeah, I have not spent any time in the G80, but the G90 I've
- 17:00I've had the pleasure of having for extended periods a few Times
- 17:04Now and I would argue that's probably a better car to be
- 17:10driven in than to drive. I thought I was picturing this.
- 17:12Like powertrain's not the most exciting thing.
- 17:15It's forwarded horsepower, but it's, you know, it's, it's not
- 17:17where you buy that car, right? Yeah, that's a car.
- 17:19You're in that, that, that back passenger seat, right?
- 17:23You know, you got your feet up, your kickback, you got a massage
- 17:27going. You've got the, you know, the
- 17:28ventilation going. You know, you're, you're, you're
- 17:31inhaling the the perfume, the fragrance.
- 17:33That the cars. Chugging out, I mean that is
- 17:36that is it's just that it's it's so different right from most
- 17:40cars in, you know, in 2026, right short of like an S class
- 17:46or. Yeah, you know, it's a, it's a
- 17:48statement automobile. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:50Yeah. You know which there are not a
- 17:53ton of like that. No, no.
- 17:56But there's a mystery around it because no one's quite sure what
- 17:58it is. And you're not dealing with any
- 18:00of the hang ups, the badge hang ups, right?
- 18:02The prejudices of, of something like a, like a Bentley or
- 18:05something. But it is so close to that
- 18:07experience in so many ways. And you know, it's it's a third
- 18:10of the price or half the price, so.
- 18:12Fantastic option. OK, so my so first, second and
- 18:16third place this is it's tough. OK so 1st place I have to go
- 18:24with the Ram T Rex. OK.
- 18:25And I'll admit I've not driven that.
- 18:28And so I want to get it exactly right.
- 18:31So I drove the Ram 1500 TRXSRT. OK, I've not spent any time in
- 18:37that so. So I had ridden in one like one
- 18:41or two generations prior to this and experienced the acceleration
- 18:46and the turbo wine and the whole thing, which is just
- 18:48intoxicating. Yeah.
- 18:50So I was very, very excited to get to drive this one.
- 18:53And you know, it's got this amazing.
- 18:55What's the paint called? Serrano Green Metallic paint is
- 18:59just, it's this like army green metallic.
- 19:02Fantastic. I know the one that's great on
- 19:03the truck, you know, and then you get.
- 19:06Scott, are you listening? I know Scott and Scott.
- 19:09Your boy needs a week. Yeah, yeah, right.
- 19:11In this. In green.
- 19:13Probably the green 1, so you know, and you get in and the
- 19:16interior is it's very intuitive. There's a lot of analogue like
- 19:21just buttons that do what you know they're going to do.
- 19:24And even the screen and the interface was very intuitive.
- 19:28And then then you start driving it and the turbo wine, I was
- 19:33just like, yes, like I need this in Turbo.
- 19:36Or supercharged. Supercharged, sorry.
- 19:38Supercharged. OK.
- 19:39Supercharger. Yes, I mean it.
- 19:42Just like the only problem is that I would.
- 19:45It sounds so fantastic I would probably be flooring it
- 19:49everywhere. Which?
- 19:49Yeah. Do you drive like an asshole?
- 19:51Is that the problem? No, like I'm very careful to be
- 19:55like moderated, but like, you know, when there's an
- 19:58opportunity, you step on it so that you can.
- 20:01Enjoy, right? I bet or you create your own
- 20:03opportunity. Who's to say?
- 20:05But you know, and I'm used to driving a full size pickup
- 20:08truck. And so I was, I was like, this
- 20:12is kind of the best of both worlds because it's the truck,
- 20:16you know, set up that I'm very familiar with and very
- 20:18comfortable in. Like I drove this truck during
- 20:23the Drive Revolution event. So it was part of a day where I
- 20:25was driving a bunch of different cars and I got in, I went, OK,
- 20:31you know, like this is something I'm very comfortable in and used
- 20:34to. And it was the only full size
- 20:36truck. It was the only truck there.
- 20:39And then you add in the supercharger and the interior is
- 20:43lovely. And I was like, I just want to
- 20:45keep driving this. So that that's something that if
- 20:49it's in a day of a bunch of different cars or something
- 20:52grabs you like that, you go, OK, that's like pay attention to
- 20:55that. And I think, I think if you
- 20:58needed one car and now the one that I drove was specked at
- 21:02$108,000 or that was the price on the sticker.
- 21:06So it's not a cheap, it's a lot. Of money.
- 21:09Lindsay, Josh. It's a lot of money, but and
- 21:12Scott Brown and I were talking about this at the event.
- 21:15Yeah, it's one vehicle that does everything because you have the.
- 21:20Performance, it's a lot of vehicle.
- 21:22It's a ton of vehicle. You can take 5 people
- 21:26comfortable. You could take five adults
- 21:27because of the way they've designed the cab.
- 21:29There's so much leg room even in the back seat.
- 21:31All of this, you have the utility of a pickup truck, which
- 21:35I have said before with even with my truck, like it was
- 21:38purpose built or you know, bought to do one thing.
- 21:41And I keep discovering even now how useful it is.
- 21:45And you know, and then you have like the supercharger and it's
- 21:48super fun. And so you have all of that in
- 21:50one car. So that's my first choice.
- 21:54Secret confession. I had never driven a pickup
- 21:58truck until I drove a Ram and this was a few years ago on a
- 22:03press event. This was not the TRX I was so
- 22:07impressed with. Yes, the thing just as a
- 22:10vehicle. I wouldn't want one if I lived
- 22:12in Manhattan or downtown Chicago.
- 22:14Or something. Like that, it's not the vehicle
- 22:16for those, you know, an urban. There are plurios that are not
- 22:20as suited to. It yeah, no, but for but I get
- 22:24it now. It had one of the best rides
- 22:26I've ever experienced. Plenty of room.
- 22:29It was just so damn usable, right.
- 22:32And you had this like, you know, it just was a great vehicle.
- 22:35It's such a well engineered thing.
- 22:38It doesn't really suit my personality and I'm not used to
- 22:40driving a full size truck every day.
- 22:42I, I just, even though I'm a big oaf, I like smaller cars, you
- 22:47know, and that is a big oaf of a truck we're all about.
- 22:50Contract here. I think Ram is making the best
- 22:53trucks and I bet that is the best of the breed.
- 22:56I just need to spend a week in one.
- 22:58Yeah. Stalantis.
- 23:00Hello. Yeah.
- 23:02So. So that's my first choice.
- 23:05Yeah. I agree with everything you
- 23:06said. And obviously, I mean, there
- 23:07are, you know, like when I would drive my truck in downtown
- 23:10Seattle, there were times where I was like, this truck is too
- 23:12big for like this parking garage or whatever.
- 23:14So you have to be aware. But, you know, if you're you
- 23:17learn, Yeah, you learn really fast.
- 23:20There was one that I pulled into years ago, pulled into it and
- 23:24went to go around, you know, the end of one of the rows.
- 23:26And I was like, I don't actually know if I can get out of here.
- 23:29This is going to take some doing.
- 23:31It was, it was like, you know. Inevitably, there are three
- 23:34people behind you and you know. Pedestrian, but I made it out.
- 23:37Yeah, yeah. Everybody was unscathed, but it
- 23:39was a good lesson of like, maybe check more, at least you're.
- 23:42Probably not going to curb a wheel.
- 23:44No, no, there is that. OK, so my second choice on this
- 23:50list #2 is the Acura Integra. Again, I think I'm gravitating
- 23:56towards sort of these multi purpose vehicles.
- 24:01And I really love that this one is a fantastic option for
- 24:05somebody that's an enthusiast and either has children or is in
- 24:10a job where they might be picking up clients or burying,
- 24:13you know, Co workers or whatever.
- 24:15Because it's a lovely, elegant car.
- 24:19It makes a wonderful first impression or makes a great
- 24:21impression. You could be proud to take it
- 24:24anywhere. It's kind of like, you know,
- 24:26Lynn was talking about the Defender where it's a lovely,
- 24:29elegant thing to show up in and then you can also take it off
- 24:32road. And I think that's the same
- 24:36criteria or same, you know, conclusion with the Integra in
- 24:39the sense of like, you could definitely take this to a very
- 24:42fancy event or a client meeting or any kind of, you know,
- 24:46professional setting. But you also, because it's a
- 24:49manual, you have this very fun car.
- 24:53Yeah. And also take your children in
- 24:54it if you need to. Yeah.
- 24:56And there aren't a lot of manual sedans on the market today.
- 25:00Like we looked it up earlier and the M3.
- 25:04So it's not trying to be an M3. No, it is back in the day when I
- 25:08had like, you know, I don't know, my first or second real
- 25:10job and I was stepping up from my my Volvo S40 to three series
- 25:16or an A4 end up going with an A four 2.8 manual right.
- 25:20So I couldn't afford the S4, but was also not trying to be the
- 25:23S4, but yet it could almost keep up with an S4 and it it it
- 25:27scratched that that enthusiast hitch, but it was also a a
- 25:31classy solution again to to picking up a client or picking
- 25:34up a date or that kind of thing. It was just those cars used to
- 25:37be everywhere. There used to be so many cars in
- 25:39that segment. There are fewer now.
- 25:41And I, I, I, I think that I think that, that the Integra
- 25:45might be the best. And have you seen the new 3
- 25:49Series? The Integra's a good looking
- 25:53thing. Holy moly, I'm.
- 25:54A little undecided the new 3 Series and and you know our our
- 25:58friend John Dyste has the three series the 3:30 M or something
- 26:03and I think that's very similar yeah but I don't even know if
- 26:07you can get that a manual anymore his is his is an
- 26:09automatic so if you want a manual there aren't too many
- 26:11choices this is not not only is it one of the few choices it's
- 26:15like it's like kind of the game over choice like this is this is
- 26:20it it's such a good car I go on and on about this thing it's
- 26:24fantastic so. It's so good all around and like
- 26:26you said, I mean the the gearbox is just so solid and like it's
- 26:33just so fun. Sewing machine.
- 26:35It is. I was delighted.
- 26:37Make manuals like that. It's.
- 26:39I know you know, and it so again, I drove this one at the
- 26:42NAWAPA event and I went to get in it and I was so excited that
- 26:45it was a manual and yeah, I mean, as far as like new manual
- 26:504 door sedans, this is a fantastic option.
- 26:54It's one of the few, yeah, yeah, because you can go get, they
- 26:59made 330 fives, you know, BMWs like 2010, 2011, you could get
- 27:05those in a manual or you could get an E90M3 sedan in a manual,
- 27:09obviously. But those are old cars at this
- 27:11point, Older, you know? So if you want a new option,
- 27:15yeah. The only hit against it front
- 27:17wheel drive right. Right.
- 27:19So depending on where you live, that may not be what you want.
- 27:21Or maybe that's why you need AT Rex and an Integra.
- 27:26But damn, it's just it's such I I don't I don't like I have no
- 27:30demerits for that car. Like they have squeezed
- 27:34everything they possibly can out of out of, you know, those facts
- 27:38and figures, right? I mean, it's the best of the
- 27:40breed again, so. Well, and like you said for the
- 27:44the visual punch that it delivers and you know, we talk
- 27:47all the time about the reports that you know, the average new
- 27:49car is $50,000. The one that I have is the
- 27:54sticker price is 41195. That's so much, right?
- 27:58It's a ton of car for the money, like I don't think you can go
- 28:01wrong with it. So that's my second choice for
- 28:05best internal combustion vehicle.
- 28:07And 3rd I have to go with the Mazda MX5 Miata which was so
- 28:18much fun. Now I got to drive it.
- 28:19The top was off. So was it RF or was it the full
- 28:22convertible? RF.
- 28:25OK, because that's kind of that's a little tighter inside
- 28:27I've discovered than the full convertible, although I really
- 28:29like the idea of it, the package look, but.
- 28:32So that that was my one sort of caveat to the Miata is I was
- 28:39very, very aware how small it is.
- 28:41Yeah. But I mean what a fun I couldn't
- 28:45buy. That I I couldn't buy that maybe
- 28:48the convertible, but the RF, the hard top, it doesn't fit me and.
- 28:52Yeah, I could see that. So.
- 28:54Much fun. It was that was the thing and
- 28:57and they had the, you know, the tops off.
- 29:00It was bright sunshine and it was just, I'm like, man, you
- 29:04could just go cruise. But I always one of the things I
- 29:08think about too is like, OK, who is the intended audience or
- 29:11like, what's the use case for this car?
- 29:13And I was very aware of how small it was because we were on
- 29:16the freeway. You know, we were taking them on
- 29:18surface streets, but also getting on the highway and where
- 29:22we were there were, you know, as you find on the highway, there
- 29:26were a lot of semi trucks and whatever.
- 29:28And there's a big contrast between a semi truck and the
- 29:31MX5. So I went OK.
- 29:34But I'm loving the driving experience.
- 29:36This is so much fun. It is pure.
- 29:38It is. And it's like pure driving
- 29:40again. That one was manual too.
- 29:41So I went, all right, if I had this, I would probably take it
- 29:46out on weekend mornings early, like, take it to Cars and
- 29:49Coffee, go for it. Like, just go for a drive when
- 29:52the roads are empty. Yeah, But I probably wouldn't
- 29:55use it as a daily. And and so you take this, you
- 29:59choose this over the BRZ or the 86 cars and that which is also
- 30:05on the list. And yeah, I fit better, a little
- 30:08bit better in the 86. I I could almost swing that as a
- 30:11daily driver. And I think it feels like you
- 30:13could daily. Drive it, Yeah.
- 30:15But there's something about having an open top and when, you
- 30:19know, I, I don't know, here in Colorado, you got to be a little
- 30:22careful. You're going to fry your top,
- 30:24your head off, you know, a lot of the summer.
- 30:25But in the morning, the afternoon, you know, on an
- 30:28overcast day, I mean, there's nothing better than an open car.
- 30:32And that is sort of a good compromise of an open.
- 30:34It's a great compromise of an open car.
- 30:36I would have to, with my own money, I think I'd get the BRZ,
- 30:40which was not my top three, but might be 4 or five in that list.
- 30:43I really did enjoy it. And and you know, the Miata has
- 30:46even I think a little bit less power that that's it.
- 30:49It's just that is there aren't too many fun cars.
- 30:52Every car takes itself so seriously anymore.
- 30:54We've talked about this. You know, every crossover's got
- 30:56to look like it's a military vehicle, right?
- 30:59You know, every truck, you know, every sports car's got to look
- 31:02like it's, you know, ready to race, right?
- 31:04That is one of the few cars anymore.
- 31:06That's just just a fun car. You know, it's not trying to be
- 31:09anything that it isn't knows it's not the fastest thing in
- 31:12the world. Yet you see a ton of them at
- 31:13track days, right, because they're still very capable,
- 31:16right? And they're just they're just
- 31:17great cars that put a smile on your face.
- 31:19It again, I laughed when I when I within, you know, 500 feet, it
- 31:23was laughing. I don't know, another car I was
- 31:25laughing in maybe a defender off road.
- 31:27But yeah, it's another story for another time.
- 31:29But it's all, I mean, again, it's like the right tool for the
- 31:31job. Like if you want to go for a
- 31:33drive and just have like a pure driving experience.
- 31:36And the one that we had at the event was the that fantastic red
- 31:40that they do, the sole red crystal metallic.
- 31:43I mean, they've got metallic red down that them and Acura.
- 31:47So the yeah, the one that I drove was 181 horsepower, 151 LB
- 31:51feet of torque. But it's so tiny that it really
- 31:54gets up and goes, Yeah, the one that I drove was the sticker
- 31:58price was 40,280. So again, like you get a lot of
- 32:03value. I think it just depends on your
- 32:05comfort level and what you need like that.
- 32:07Yeah, the I think the other part of that is it wouldn't work for
- 32:10my daily life because I need to take dogs and children and all
- 32:13that, so there isn't enough space.
- 32:14But if it was a dedicated weekend, fun car, like
- 32:19fantastic. I would encourage anyone to buy
- 32:20one if it fits you, it suits your lifestyle, you you, you
- 32:23will have no regrets with the Miata.
- 32:25Yeah, exactly. The old ones too.
- 32:26I don't know if you've checked like the prices on a good NA
- 32:28Miata. So back, you know, 9091 up to 90
- 32:33to 96, I think 97, those things are, are have come way up
- 32:39because the ones that are left are the really good ones.
- 32:42And so, yeah, they're, they're, you know, they've always been
- 32:44good, you know, and I think this, the Miata they're making
- 32:48now is the best Miata they've made so.
- 32:50You heard it here first. Yeah.
- 32:53All right. So the next category.
- 32:55Is 30 minutes are we? I know we got to, we got to keep
- 32:58it moving, right? Yeah.
- 33:00Well, we can. We can edit.
- 33:02Passionate about about these things though we are so.
- 33:05All right, so let's move on to the best EV.
- 33:08So the options are the Lucid Air, the Lucid Gravity, the
- 33:12Genesis GV 60 Magma, the Mercedes CLA 250 Plus Pinnacle,
- 33:18the Hyundai Ionic 5, the Subaru Trail Seeker, the Toyota BZ, or
- 33:24the Lexus ES350E. Yeah.
- 33:29So a couple of these cars I've not driven, I've not driven the
- 33:31Magma and I've not driven that Mercedes.
- 33:35This is such a tricky one because you know, I daily drive
- 33:38or at least we have a an EV, it's kind of our primary family
- 33:41vehicle and it's a pole star too and whole other story there.
- 33:44But you know, so we're, you know, we're, we're EV converts,
- 33:50right? And and and you know it's.
- 33:52A friendly audience. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:54Even that car, which the design is several years old now, does
- 33:57things really, really right. I just had the Trail Seeker and
- 34:00the first time I drove the Trail Seeker was at one of our arm app
- 34:03events. And so I, I don't know, I spent
- 34:05probably less than an hour I thought was fantastic.
- 34:09You know, it's, so it's basically, if you could picture
- 34:12an Outback, you know that's electric, right?
- 34:14This is the, I had one as a long term about, I don't know, a week
- 34:17or two ago and it was such a what do you want to it was, it
- 34:25was a confounding experience because the car itself is pretty
- 34:29great, right? Like it's got a great ride.
- 34:32It's a much better ride than our Pols Dr. It's a bigger, longer
- 34:35car. It's got 375 horsepower, so you
- 34:38know, off the line it's quite quick.
- 34:40It had a lot of fun, you know, surprising people at stoplights.
- 34:44Yeah, they accelerate rapidly. They, they, they do, they do.
- 34:49It's, it's, it's a, it's a very usable, functional thing.
- 34:54But I, I little little things, little things.
- 34:59I hate to pick this car apart because it's so close to being a
- 35:01wonderful car. It's got Tesla, the Tesla
- 35:05charging connector. But if you can't just go up to a
- 35:08Tesla charger, you've got to download the Subaru app that
- 35:12then connects you. But if you haven't downloaded
- 35:15the Subaru app, then you're, you're screwed.
- 35:18It has a connector, an adapter to use whatever the traditional
- 35:21system is like that our pole star has.
- 35:24But we, we, I found that getting stuck in the, the port, you
- 35:28know, it's this kind of stuff. It's just some elements of it
- 35:31are fundamental. It's a fantastic car.
- 35:33Yeah. But the details, you know,
- 35:36little things like the pole star when it's charging in the
- 35:38garage, the screen is on and it's this big high def screen
- 35:42that tells you how much time you have.
- 35:44The, the, the Subaru, the trail seeker, it's a little red light
- 35:48that flashes like it's your seat belt light, you know, and you've
- 35:51got to get in the car and turn it on.
- 35:54Little, little it's 1000. It's kind of death by 1000 cuts.
- 35:58I'm sure a lot of these things, the, the alarms, the the beeping
- 36:01and all this can be turned off. But I just felt like you
- 36:03couldn't do anything in that car without it.
- 36:05It, it beeping at you. So with that car is almost my
- 36:09number one in that group, not having driven everything.
- 36:13More like it would take some setting up it would take.
- 36:17Some setting up I, I, I think and I think it would be a
- 36:20wonderful car for so many people.
- 36:23That said, I don't know that it's my personal #1 let's.
- 36:26So instead of me going down the list, what would be your number
- 36:28one? So my number one, OK, I'm just
- 36:34going to do my first and 2nd. OK.
- 36:35Give yours and then I'll come back.
- 36:36Yeah. With Yeah, yeah.
- 36:38So my 2 favorites were and the again, this is we say sometimes
- 36:44there are delightful surprises. So they I had one of the Hyundai
- 36:50Ionic fives at I had it for alone over the summer.
- 36:53So I had it for a week and then it was also at this NAWAPA event
- 36:58just this last month and I love that car so much.
- 37:02That's my real #1 and it's because it doesn't have.
- 37:05Those issues fantastic. Yeah, you get in it's it's a
- 37:10seamless, easy, intuitive driving experience.
- 37:13And it is. So the one that I had was Atlas
- 37:18white mat. So it was just this like cool,
- 37:20kind of like slightly metallic matte white with they said grey,
- 37:26but it was like a very light, light, light grey, almost white
- 37:29interior. And we all kept saying we get in
- 37:33it, you know, you get in and sit down and it was like, it was
- 37:37like an exhale in a good way. It was very thin inside and even
- 37:42the color was like even the exterior color.
- 37:44It was a very calming car, super calming driving experience.
- 37:50You know, We talked with Scott Kruger from Stilantis about the
- 37:53user experience and the driving experience and the user
- 37:56experience of the Ionic 5 is 1 of like serenity and peace and
- 38:02calm and just, and it's a lovely car to drive.
- 38:06Like the ride is wonderful. Hearing is great.
- 38:09It was very intuitive. So.
- 38:12So actually that's my first choice.
- 38:15Yeah, I think it's my first. Yeah.
- 38:17And like even sitting in the driveway, I would look out and
- 38:19see it and smile because it was like, man, when you are in that
- 38:22car, it is just so nice. It's been around for a.
- 38:27Few years, right? Yeah, I feel like I first drove
- 38:301. You know, it's probably 3 or 4
- 38:31years ago, but yeah, that's, that's, you know, it does so
- 38:34many things, right? It's just, it just walks that
- 38:37line of like, you know, handling versus ride quality.
- 38:41You know, none of the none of the like half baked issues that
- 38:44I hate to say like we had in the Trail Seeker.
- 38:46If you don't need something that now that Trail Seeker is
- 38:48genuinely capable off road in a way that the the Hyundai, you
- 38:52know, is more of a, you know, Rd. oriented vehicle.
- 38:55I have off roaded both of them believe it or not.
- 38:57Have you OK at Mudfest? I off roaded both of them.
- 39:01Well, how was the Hyundai off road because I don't think of it
- 39:04having that much clearance. Okay.
- 39:06It did great. It was.
- 39:08Okay, well it. Was very funny because we did
- 39:10the first day of that event, it was a 2 day event.
- 39:12Yeah. The first day was on road and
- 39:14then the second day was entirely off road.
- 39:17All of the vehicles, I think there was one vehicle that they
- 39:19pulled back just because of clearance and there was one
- 39:21where they said, you know, don't bomb up the hill but like go
- 39:24ahead. There were no caveats with the
- 39:26Ionic 5 and it shoot up the course.
- 39:29It did fantastically. Just goes.
- 39:32That was such a funny thing because there were several cars
- 39:34where you're like, I don't know that I would have thought to
- 39:36take this off road. Yeah.
- 39:37But now that I have seen its capabilities, yeah, maybe I
- 39:40would do some light off. But it just.
- 39:43Added to, you know, it's an incredibly capable car.
- 39:48I think it'd be a fantastic around town.
- 39:50It's probably delightful on a road trip because it's so
- 39:53calming and you know. Packaging is great.
- 39:56Yeah, I took four adults in it. Everybody was comfortable and
- 39:59had plenty of room, you know, 2 tall guys.
- 40:02Yeah. So you.
- 40:03See them everywhere, at least here in Denver.
- 40:04So I mean, I guess, you know, the proof's in the pudding or
- 40:07whatever, you know, they're selling these things.
- 40:09Once I knew I was getting it, and then especially once it was
- 40:11dropped off, I was seeing them everywhere.
- 40:15I'm like, with good reason, like people are.
- 40:17I think it's funny because that's another one that I think
- 40:19flies under the radar a little bit, but people are buying them
- 40:23and driving them. Yeah, that's a car I would
- 40:25consider buying. Same.
- 40:27Yeah. And it's I I don't generally
- 40:30gravitate towards EVs. Like I don't have a, it's just I
- 40:35grew up without them. Sure, I think that's not.
- 40:37The first, well, we all did, Lindsay.
- 40:38And let's hear that one weird guy with like the home built
- 40:41wedge shaped thing, you know, with the, you know, the.
- 40:44Yeah. So it's, it's not my default to
- 40:48think of them. Yeah.
- 40:49But I think that really speaks to the quality of the car or the
- 40:53driving experience or the user experience when it's converting
- 40:56people that that isn't their default.
- 40:58And they're like, hey, I would absolutely commit to this.
- 41:00Yep, that's a car I've recommended.
- 41:02We'll continue to recommend, you know, yeah, it's just a great
- 41:05car. What about your number 2?
- 41:08OK, so #2 is the Lexus ES350E, which I just got to drive at the
- 41:15Nuapa event, hadn't seen one before and I was kind of neutral
- 41:21in the sense of I hadn't seen one before.
- 41:22This was my first experience. They, you know, Lexus was great.
- 41:25They brought one and they had a representative come and do a
- 41:28walk around and tell us all about the car.
- 41:31You know, it's always interesting to hear because
- 41:33there's so much thought that goes into the interior design
- 41:35and the materials. And this one had bamboo, you
- 41:38know, door cards, which were super cool.
- 41:41Obviously doesn't change the driving experience, but it's
- 41:43always nice to see these little touches and have them pointed
- 41:45out. And holy cow was the ride and
- 41:50just the smoothness of that car. I mean, lovely that's, you know,
- 41:56it's always interesting when a word pops into your head when
- 41:58you're driving a new car and they just kept hearing lovely
- 42:02over and over in my head. It's just a great car, right?
- 42:05Like, you know, like some of the other cars we've talked about.
- 42:08That was something that really surprised me.
- 42:10I've driven both the the electric and the the ICE.
- 42:13The electric is the superior car.
- 42:16It is that is my little like, you know, hot pocket of Zen like
- 42:21that. They just it's like right, It's
- 42:23like it's like you're losing this little pod, but like done
- 42:26well, right, It is like it's kind of like the first time you
- 42:29got one of like the Lexus LS400's of your right.
- 42:33Right. Like what is this?
- 42:34Damn, This is like, I want to just drive this all day, right?
- 42:38Yeah. It's kind of generic looking,
- 42:40but it's good looking, you know? It's kind of, you know, you
- 42:43know, at the moment there were times I thought, God, I'm
- 42:45driving like a grandma's car, but then like, no, I really like
- 42:48this. This is this is what I this is
- 42:51the anti road rage mobile like this is.
- 42:54Right, it chills you out, right? It's the Zen mode.
- 42:57Not the fastest EV, if I recall right.
- 42:59I mean, they had good power, but it wasn't, you know, like, you
- 43:02know, probably isn't like 3 1/2 seconds to 60.
- 43:04It's probably 4 1/2 seconds or five seconds, right?
- 43:06Which is? Yeah, plenty, because it has a
- 43:08single, single electric motor. So the one that I drove was 221
- 43:12horsepower, 100 and 98 LB Feud of torque.
- 43:15I drove the dual motor. OK, Yeah.
- 43:18So I had a bit more, I believe it was a dual motor.
- 43:20I'll check that. But yeah, I but I didn't think
- 43:22power was an issue, whatever it was that it.
- 43:24Was no, I mean and even with the single motor it was not.
- 43:27And again, this the one that I drove was priced at $47,500
- 43:32like. It's a Lexus A.
- 43:33Lot of and it's a Lexus. So if you, I feel like it's, you
- 43:38could kind of say the Ionic 5 and this Lexus are like two
- 43:44sides of the same coin depending on, you know, if you if the name
- 43:49is important to you or the brand is important to you, get the
- 43:52Lexus if it isn't considered both because they're not that
- 43:56far apart in price. No, no.
- 43:59You know, the Ionic 5 was 51, the one that we drove at the
- 44:05event or the one that I had over the summer, it was 51, which
- 44:08again for what you're getting, I think is a reasonable price.
- 44:11Like I think you're getting a lot of car for that, but they're
- 44:13not that far. Apart deals, yeah, I do think
- 44:16that the Lexus, Lexus is a more luxury, luxurious experience,
- 44:21but I feel I feel like the Hyundai has a little more
- 44:23utility. All right, I'll leave it at
- 44:24that. But those are both cars that I
- 44:26would actually buy. I guess I'm getting old, but
- 44:29that that Lexus is really compelling.
- 44:33And I think it speaks to the quality of the car.
- 44:35And it's a better, more refine, a better, more refined car as an
- 44:39EV and an Alexis, that's what you want, right?
- 44:42So yeah, that's wild. See that that was that was a
- 44:44surprise. That was a surprise this year.
- 44:46Right, I know. All right.
- 44:48So what are your your best EV 1st and 2nd place?
- 44:51Well, I think I still have to go with with the Hyundai, the ONIC
- 44:545 and then and then the the Lexus, but they're very, very
- 44:57close and asterisk that that Subaru is so close to being
- 45:02wonderful. If they can iron out a few
- 45:04things or I don't know, maybe they can teach me what I'm doing
- 45:07wrong. That's that's.
- 45:09Probably we need a course, yeah. That's right there too.
- 45:12It's just those other two are so ironed out.
- 45:15Yeah, that's true. And I drove the Trail Seeker at
- 45:18the event in the spring, and I think one of the things that I
- 45:22loved about it, because it was one of their, you know, first
- 45:26EVs, it still had the Subaru familiarity to it.
- 45:30Yeah. It's not what's nice where you
- 45:31get in and you're like, OK, I know this.
- 45:34Yeah. But it's really well done.
- 45:35Like, the interiors are lovely. They're doing such a great job.
- 45:38That one has one of the Squovel steering wheels, so that took a
- 45:41little bit of getting you too. Yes, but you will and you will
- 45:44never think. You do like by day two, it was
- 45:47not attracting, you know, it wasn't catching my attention.
- 45:50And then, yeah, I mean, it drove really nicely, great
- 45:54acceleration, so. Great.
- 45:56Yeah. Yeah, I I mean, it did the auto
- 45:58cross course and it did they they had like a we were out at
- 46:02the Ridge racetrack and they had the go Kart course is a, you
- 46:07know, scaled down version of the racetrack.
- 46:09It handled that no problem and again and it did all the off
- 46:12roading so. Yeah, if you recommend if you
- 46:16are someone for from the safety nannies are are important,
- 46:19right. Like you know that is your car.
- 46:23Some of us like a little less intrusion, but again, you know,
- 46:27I I don't want to, I don't want to knock it because it's a
- 46:30wonderful car. If you are, if you are a Subaru
- 46:33person and you're looking for an EV like that is your car game,
- 46:35you know, done. Right, because you can take 5
- 46:38people, plenty of cargo, you know, I mean that one, when I
- 46:41got out of that, and again, it's like I've learned to listen to
- 46:45my, you know, internal monologue, especially on the
- 46:48days where you're driving a bunch of different cars in a
- 46:49row. I got out of that one and I went
- 46:52and told the Subaru Rep because I think I had driven the
- 46:54Uncharted and then I went into the trail seeker and I was like
- 46:58Subaru is killing it like. They're just, yeah.
- 47:01They're good. They're.
- 47:02Really like a damn hooligan too. Like it's got enough power and
- 47:05the handling is is good enough where you can actually have fun
- 47:08in it, which I can't say for every EV or every Subaru for
- 47:12that matter. So you know it, it does fix that
- 47:14issue. I think I did a a real on
- 47:16Instagram about this. Something like the Outback or
- 47:18the forest or traditionally it's all it's been all about the
- 47:21utility. It's you're not getting that car
- 47:23for the powertrain, especially with the CVT transmissions and
- 47:26and this kind of thing that solves that big problem because
- 47:29you won't want for any power, right?
- 47:32You don't have to worry about the, you know, a transmission
- 47:35choice. It's just, I just maybe I was
- 47:38having a bad week. I just couldn't get past some of
- 47:41that. You need to do the nannies and
- 47:42stuff. Yeah, but it's so close.
- 47:44But that's, yeah, that could be the number one for a lot of
- 47:48people listening. Just know what you're getting
- 47:50into. Yeah, that's fair.
- 47:52It's quirky. Believe it at that.
- 47:54There you go. OK, so next category is best
- 48:01hybrid or Pehev. So the options are the Tucson,
- 48:06so the Hyundai Tucson, the Mazda CX50, the Toyota Rav 4, the I'm
- 48:12going to do a little dog pass on here.
- 48:17He's getting antsy. It's OK.
- 48:19The Jeep Cherokee overland or the Toyota crown signia.
- 48:26So, your thoughts? I like the crown Signia.
- 48:31It's not perfect. It's a, it's, it's kind of like
- 48:33the trail seeker and maybe there's some shared componentry
- 48:36there. I'd have to look that up.
- 48:38It's a it's more refined than the Subaru.
- 48:42Well you did a longer Rd. Trip I did, I did.
- 48:44That's a that, that's a good car.
- 48:46You know, I, I went back, I was reading that that article.
- 48:50I went back to read that article because someone had asked about
- 48:52it and this was less than a year ago.
- 48:54And I referenced, gosh, paying $1.88 for gas somewhere in
- 48:58Nebraska and like what a cheap car that was to operate, it
- 49:01being a hybrid that is, it's, it's, it's, it's Lexus, like a
- 49:06lot of people said, it's there's your, there's your cheap Lexus.
- 49:08It's not that. I don't think it's as refined as
- 49:11the Lexus we were talking about earlier, but that's a very good
- 49:15car, really nice interior. I keep coming back to that as
- 49:18one of those cars. Like, yeah, I think about that
- 49:20car sometimes because it was just so good at being a car,
- 49:23right? Yeah, it has its own flavor.
- 49:25It's not that Acura, it's not that Subaru, but that's probably
- 49:29my number one in that group because I think it just did so
- 49:33many things, right. Number two, I thought the
- 49:36Hyundai was quite good as well. OK, the Tucson.
- 49:41The Tucson I thought that was was quite nice.
- 49:44Didn't love the Jeep. What else is in that list?
- 49:48Didn't love the. Rav 4 the Mazda CX50 the Rav.
- 49:51Four CX 50 was underwhelming. I wanted to like it because I
- 49:56like the way it looks. I like Mazdas, but it just
- 49:58didn't quite do it for me. There's something about it.
- 50:00The ride seemed harsh. Yeah, for me, it's that it's
- 50:02that Toyota and then the and then the Hyundai.
- 50:05What about you there? You go.
- 50:06So I haven't driven the crown, but you, I know you have raved
- 50:10about it and we got to see one at the LA Auto Show last year.
- 50:14That's. Where it all began, Yeah.
- 50:15That was where, you know, that was what kicked it off.
- 50:18I did just have the Tucson for a week following the CX5 that I
- 50:24had and I drove the CX50 at the event in Portland and I've
- 50:31driven a couple Rav fours. So I think I would like more
- 50:37time with the Jeep because it was interesting.
- 50:41I was very aware of how big it was, kind of the scale of it.
- 50:46Even the steering wheel was very thick compared to everything
- 50:48else. And possibly because I was
- 50:50driving like 12 other cars that day, you're more aware of the
- 50:54differences. But I think if I had to pick
- 50:58winners, I actually would pick the Rav 4 because I've driven.
- 51:06I drove the woodland this time. And then I drove Yeah.
- 51:11And they had another one at Mudfest and I was really
- 51:15impressed with both of them, like.
- 51:17Would be my #3 because it's come a long way.
- 51:20The seats are always an issue in Toyota's and the Rav Fours, the
- 51:22new seat is actually quite good. So yeah, yeah, maybe I need to
- 51:25reconsider. That could be a possible #2 tie.
- 51:28I think it's something that flies under the radar because I
- 51:30think, like you said, people have in their minds what the
- 51:32definition of a Rav 4 is. And if you haven't seen a new
- 51:35one, I think you would be, you know, blown away.
- 51:38Might be too much, but I think you would be very pleasantly
- 51:41surprised by the quality. And, you know, the interior is
- 51:44nice. I think it's a great utility
- 51:47car. Like if you're around town,
- 51:49moving kids, dogs, whatever, you don't want something giant, but
- 51:52you want the ability to take people and some stuff.
- 51:56I think it's a great option. So I would pick that one.
- 51:59That's a good choice. And then, yeah, I think the
- 52:02Tucson would be my second choice.
- 52:05I really love the design. And again, the interior you get
- 52:09in, it was another one, like another Hyundai that I got in.
- 52:12And I'm like, I love this interior and just kind of the
- 52:15little touches, you know, the lighting was lovely.
- 52:19It had colored lighting it, but it was just very again, like
- 52:21calming Zen, you know? Now that the palisade is like
- 52:26Tahoe size, yeah, like that's kind of the right size, right?
- 52:30Yeah, it's, and I think that is having all these different cars
- 52:33has shown me how many are in that category.
- 52:37Like, you know, and I was talking to one of the people
- 52:40that manages the fleet, one of the fleets up here and he said,
- 52:43well, that's what people want, that's what they're driving.
- 52:46And it makes perfect sense because it's parking lot or you
- 52:49know, parking spot sized, but it's still very capable.
- 52:53You could take 5 people if you wanted to.
- 52:54You can take stuff and it's not massive, right?
- 52:59Yeah, no, it's. And it and with the hybrid
- 53:02option, it's easier on gas and all of that.
- 53:06I think the exterior design is great.
- 53:08Yep, the back seat was comfortable for my daughter.
- 53:12So I think it's a great option. I'm trying to see.
- 53:16I was going to say, so the one that I drove was it was 40,000
- 53:20which. Yeah, that's for.
- 53:22So many people high. I think it might be a little bit
- 53:25high, but still, you know, it's below average.
- 53:29I think it's a good option. This is a segment that's so
- 53:32crowded, has so many good cars, not too many, you know, bad
- 53:36cars, if any. It comes down to like a choice
- 53:40of of preferences, right? You want a little more
- 53:42refinement? Do you want a little more
- 53:43utility? Do you care for like the seat
- 53:46fits you, you know, do you want to sport your ride a cushier
- 53:49ride? You know, and honestly, some of
- 53:51these cars that would just come down to like, you know, what's
- 53:53the dealer willing to deal, you know, on.
- 53:56Yeah, the economics of it. Right, Right.
- 53:59Yeah. I think we both agree that the
- 54:01Jeep probably wasn't a winner for us.
- 54:05And then also the CX50 I think was probably would probably be
- 54:09like second to last place for me.
- 54:11I've not driven the new CX5 and it's so odd that they have these
- 54:14two vehicles which are which operate in literally the same
- 54:17segment. They're they're selling almost
- 54:19against themselves. And I think I would have taken a
- 54:23couple years ago, I would have taken the CX50, but I think the
- 54:25new CX5 may have that refinement that I was missing in the CX50,
- 54:30so. It does.
- 54:31So that is actually the car that I had that I drove to and from
- 54:34the event. So I spent, you know, 8 hours
- 54:37Rd. tripping down and back and it was so that was an
- 54:41interesting surprise when I got in the CX50 because I was like,
- 54:44oh, I'm driving one of these right now.
- 54:46It's probably going to be the same thing.
- 54:48And the CX5 has gotten a cosmetic update inside.
- 54:53So it's got all the new, you know, interior and it is a
- 54:58lovely place to be. Yeah, I think probably has the
- 55:02previous generation interior design still.
- 55:05Yeah, and they do drive a little differently.
- 55:07They do and it has I think a little more off road capability
- 55:10too. Sorry to talk of me about the
- 55:11CX50. I think is intended to be a
- 55:13little more tough or whatever that makes sense because it was
- 55:18is there too, but. Yeah, and it was the CX5 was a
- 55:22little bit more of a refined driving.
- 55:25Experience. Yeah, but that's a good thing.
- 55:26Probably the better car. Well, and I think it depends on
- 55:29what, like you said, what you're buying it for.
- 55:31Like what? Or do you want something that
- 55:32can go off road, you know? That's it.
- 55:35It comes down to just personal preferences.
- 55:37It's such a crowded, competitive segment that, you know there's
- 55:40no room for bad stuff. Yeah, I don't even know what
- 55:42would be a bad car in that segment anymore, honestly.
- 55:45I know. Well, and that Jeep may not be
- 55:48my favorite, but it's not a bad car.
- 55:50It's just comes down to finishes and things and.
- 55:53You know, what's interesting to me is like, and This is why I
- 55:56love talking to the guys that manage the fleets up here
- 55:59because they get to see and drive everything.
- 56:01Yeah. And, you know, I've gotten to
- 56:03become friends with a few of them.
- 56:05And they were at the event. And so we'd kind of talk in
- 56:07between, you know what, I'd get out of something and they'd say,
- 56:10like, what would you think? Whatever.
- 56:12And I was talking to one of my friends after I got out of the
- 56:14Jeep and I was telling him like, yeah, I just, I caught myself
- 56:18being very aware of the scale of it, which was interesting,
- 56:22especially because I drive a full size pickup truck.
- 56:24So it's not like I'm Oh my gosh, I don't, I drive something
- 56:28really small. I'm not used to this.
- 56:29But what was interesting is I said that to him and he said I
- 56:32had the exact same experience. I drove it for a short spurt,
- 56:36you know, initially and he said, and then he ended up moving in
- 56:40between cities. So he was on like a several hour
- 56:42road trip in it and he said I fell completely in love with it.
- 56:46So for whatever reason you need to spend some time in it.
- 56:51And he said now I recommend it to everybody.
- 56:53So I'm like, all right, then I need it for hopefully I can get
- 56:56it for a long term loan. And I think it's on my schedule
- 56:58and so we'll see. But I'm like, yeah, I'm totally
- 57:01willing to be, you know, consider that maybe it's
- 57:05something you just need to spend a little more.
- 57:06Time. That's so OK.
- 57:07So this is the tricky thing about that segment.
- 57:09Some of these cars or crossovers vehicles are great road trip
- 57:14vehicles. They're not the car that I want
- 57:16to commute in in. Like around town, Yeah.
- 57:19Right. But it's that sweet spot, right?
- 57:21Like it's the that we want that I want.
- 57:23It's the car that's pretty good at both, right?
- 57:27Right, the elusive Unicorn. Back to the Acura Integra.
- 57:30Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it just depends.
- 57:34OK. So Speaking of Rd. trips, best
- 57:37off roader or adventure vehicle? So the contenders are the Toyota
- 57:424 Runner Trail Hunter, which we've both driven, the Forester
- 57:45Wilderness, which we've both driven the Outback Wilderness,
- 57:48which you have the Subaru Trail Seeker, which we have both
- 57:52driven the Ram 1500 TRX or the Jeep Cherokee Overland, so.
- 57:58Crossover. Yeah, a little.
- 58:01Bit so should we say that we can only choose winners from things
- 58:05that we haven't discussed yet, which shortens the list?
- 58:08Yeah, say this one more time. So the Toyota 4 runner trail.
- 58:12Right, right, right, right the. Word.
- 58:13Forester Wilderness. Yeah.
- 58:15Subaru Outback Wilderness. I feel like Subaru's gonna run
- 58:18away with this one way or another.
- 58:19Subaru Trail Seeker. Yeah.
- 58:21Ram 1500 TRX SRT Yeah. Jeep Cherokee Overland.
- 58:25OK, so this is oh, it's almost. Except for the lone Toyota.
- 58:29This is a battle between Subaru and Stalantis.
- 58:31OK, the Toyota that trail hunter, that Toyota 4 runner is
- 58:36again a love hate car, but for very different ways than the
- 58:40trail seeker made by a completely different company in
- 58:44a different continent or not but that trail hunter.
- 58:48Happy Trails category. The trilunger looks the
- 58:51business. Damn that is a fine looking
- 58:53truck that is like the one I had was green with the bronze
- 58:57wheels, you know it. Does it?
- 59:00Does so many things, but it's got a 300 horsepower 4 cylinder
- 59:04turbo. That is a car if it had a six
- 59:07cylinder in it and you recall they had an 8 cylinder and a 4
- 59:10runner for few years, you know, a couple decades ago that car is
- 59:14crying out. I don't even if it has less
- 59:16horsepower, give me a, a naturally aspirated 6 cylinder
- 59:20because it's it's so on off, it's so hard to drive smoothly.
- 59:24It's the same complaint I had. Probably about the only
- 59:26complaint I had when I had my turbo 4 cylinder came in right
- 59:30where it's just it, it's there's nothing and then there's
- 59:33everything. And yeah, it's already kind of
- 59:36a. Conscious.
- 59:37No, it's so capable off road. I was a little disappointed in
- 59:40the ride. I thought the ride based on the
- 59:42look in the in the big tires and all that, I thought it'd be a
- 59:44bit of a cushier ride. In fact, I found myself driving
- 59:47around town with the with the tires aired down.
- 59:49It's so highly capable though. I mean, it's just like you find
- 59:52yourself looking for bigger and better obstacles because it just
- 59:56kind of just goes the damn snorkel.
- 1:00:00I loved it for the first day. By the end of the week, I was
- 1:00:02done. My poor wife Molly in the
- 1:00:05passenger seat was that. Much closer.
- 1:00:08If they came up with maybe you can pull a fuse or something if
- 1:00:11there's a way that you can cut off that at least have as an
- 1:00:14option when you're digging around on your own shirt.
- 1:00:17But we were out with the family. You don't want them.
- 1:00:19You know, it's just it's it's, it sounds like you're rolling
- 1:00:21cold, but you're not. It's just it's, it's, it's a
- 1:00:24little much. It's such a great vehicle.
- 1:00:26But I, I think if I were buying a 4 runner, I think I'd probably
- 1:00:30go for like the, the TRD Pro because you've got so much more
- 1:00:34of a capability. What's fun for a day is not fun
- 1:00:37for a, you know, a 72 month loan or whatever, you know, because
- 1:00:41they're so expensive. But so that could be again, so
- 1:00:44close to be my number one, but just, it would be tough to live
- 1:00:48with day in and day out because of a few little niggling things.
- 1:00:53So #1. So the OK, so it's.
- 1:00:57Got to be a Subaru. Yeah, well, I've not.
- 1:01:00Driven the TRX you. Know so of what you've driven.
- 1:01:03So it is going to be Subaru going to run away with your
- 1:01:06choices. They're going to be the winners
- 1:01:07here. So fork the wilderness, Outback
- 1:01:09wilderness, or trail seeker. I prefer the Outback wilderness
- 1:01:12that I have, I think a little bit over the Forester again, I I
- 1:01:15thought this was a Forester wilderness until I literally
- 1:01:19thought that it was a Forester until I saw the badge in the
- 1:01:21back. Because to me they're almost
- 1:01:23indistinguishable. I asked Chappie.
- 1:01:25My team. But it looks wise just in and
- 1:01:28out. I mean, like, unless you're
- 1:01:30looking next to each other, I, you know, you drop, drop me to
- 1:01:321. I wouldn't necessarily know.
- 1:01:35ChatGPT says that the Outback, it's a little more expensive.
- 1:01:39It's a little more of a wagon shape, a little lower, a little
- 1:01:42longer. It has a better ride.
- 1:01:44To me, the big distinguishing thing is that the that Forester
- 1:01:48wilderness I had I think was a hybrid.
- 1:01:50This is a but they also make it an an an A naturally aspirated 4
- 1:01:56cylinder. This one is it's a turbo 4, but
- 1:02:00it actually kind of works with the CVT and everything and
- 1:02:04against CVT. But I think, I think it's, I
- 1:02:08think I prefer the ride and all that, but it's gotten so big.
- 1:02:12They have gotten. Both, both the Forester and the
- 1:02:14Outback have gotten so big that it is no longer the lifted wagon
- 1:02:17of a generation or two ago. You know, it's about the size
- 1:02:20again, you're seriously like, I don't think it's probably far
- 1:02:23off of like, you know, a a Tahoe of a couple generations ago.
- 1:02:27It is a big vehicle. It's wide.
- 1:02:30I mean, I'm a big guy, but it again, it's just so much vehicle
- 1:02:32and that's kind of what I keep coming back to.
- 1:02:34I think a lot of people like that.
- 1:02:35For me, maybe we want something a little smaller, but it's a
- 1:02:38great vehicle and none of the issues of of the EV that that
- 1:02:44said, the price of gas, the trail seeker may be enough.
- 1:02:49Those three vehicles, especially if you like Subarus, you know
- 1:02:51what you're getting into. You can't go, can't go wrong.
- 1:02:53Yeah. Well, and what about you?
- 1:02:55I'm saying because I had the Forester for the Avant's Women's
- 1:02:59Off Road Day in March. It was a Forester wilderness,
- 1:03:03you know, chewed up the course like didn't have a single
- 1:03:07hiccup. Super capable off road.
- 1:03:09Super capable off road, that's a distinguishing thing.
- 1:03:12Versus yeah, incredibly capable off road.
- 1:03:14I know when I talked to Dom later he said he had been
- 1:03:18because I had a Forrester Touring for the Off road day in
- 1:03:242025 and so he had one. He was hoping I could have taken
- 1:03:28the Outback this year, but it wasn't available.
- 1:03:33So the Forester was available. But it was fun to compare
- 1:03:35because there's such a difference between the cars and,
- 1:03:40you know, I think I got to pick the Forester for my first choice
- 1:03:43because it was, we kept remarking, you know, we'd get in
- 1:03:47it like anytime Tori and I went anywhere, we'd get in it and
- 1:03:50within a couple minutes we both would say, like, gosh, I love
- 1:03:53this car. You know, sometimes we wouldn't
- 1:03:55even be out of the parking garage and we'd be saying like
- 1:03:57and love this car because the interiors have come so far.
- 1:04:02Again, it was such a nice place to be.
- 1:04:03There were all these little design touches.
- 1:04:05It drove really nicely. Plenty of space in the backseat
- 1:04:08for my daughter, plenty of cargo space.
- 1:04:11I love. Yeah.
- 1:04:13And like, because it was the wilderness package.
- 1:04:16It came with rubber mats. And especially in Seattle and I
- 1:04:19would imagine in Denver, you guys have weather.
- 1:04:21It's nice to know We could just, you know, like, if we got wet or
- 1:04:24we got muddy or we got snowy or whatever, you can throw stuff in
- 1:04:27the back and you don't worry about it.
- 1:04:30And it was a nice car. And I think the same thing, you
- 1:04:34know, we talk about like, what's the thing you could go off
- 1:04:36roading in and then go to the black tie event.
- 1:04:38Yeah. Like the exterior isn't quite
- 1:04:41black tie yet, but they're they're so nice looking at this
- 1:04:45point. Really nice.
- 1:04:47Looking you still could show up to a black tie event in that and
- 1:04:50be proud of it and like so that's my first choice I highly
- 1:04:54recommend them yeah loved driving it I spent the week with
- 1:04:57it yeah you know I. Need to have them.
- 1:05:01I need to have the Forester again, I think immediately after
- 1:05:04this Outback because you know, I just they're, I think it's going
- 1:05:09to be the details. Yeah, yeah, it does help to
- 1:05:12compare. But yeah, that was 1, You know,
- 1:05:15and we've all talked about this on the show of like, what's the
- 1:05:18press car that kind of has you, you know, in a chokehold that,
- 1:05:22you know, when you go to hand it back, you're going to miss it.
- 1:05:25Like, you know, even when you have it, you're like, this is
- 1:05:27going to be a tough one to hand back because we're driving so
- 1:05:31many different things that if something when you catch
- 1:05:34yourself going like, man, I'm going to miss this one.
- 1:05:36That is notable because of we got to drive so many different
- 1:05:39things. So the Forester I miss, Yeah.
- 1:05:42Yeah, and this is what I'll say about Subaru.
- 1:05:45You know, they're honest cars, right, Even though they can be
- 1:05:49quirky. But that's I guess kind of the
- 1:05:51part of the term too, you know, it's.
- 1:05:53Like what a dog say like they need some turmoil in the in.
- 1:05:56The design or in the car? Yeah, and despite everything
- 1:05:59I've said, like I probably still buy a Trail Seeker, they're.
- 1:06:04They're great. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:07But I think probably the Outback or the Forester make more sense
- 1:06:09for most people, probably what they're looking for.
- 1:06:12But God, you think about like the, there was an appeal to like
- 1:06:14the Subarus of like 3 generations ago, but you look
- 1:06:17back and they were just so plain and plastic.
- 1:06:19And like the new ones are are, I guess they've kind of grown with
- 1:06:22their audience, right? It's more.
- 1:06:24Expensive. They've gotten bigger, they've
- 1:06:25gotten more upscale. You know, everything works.
- 1:06:28You get in, I, I got to say this, this Outback, I get in, it
- 1:06:31recognizes that you have a phone that's unpaired and within 1015
- 1:06:35seconds my phone was, was, was connected and I was, I was
- 1:06:39cooking with gas. That's not every car that in
- 1:06:42fact, that's not a lot of cars. And so the ease of use, you
- 1:06:46know, it's really easy to get in and out, right, Even compared to
- 1:06:49other cars in its class. You know, everything works as it
- 1:06:53should. You know, it's just, it's, it's,
- 1:06:57it's you. Have to worry about.
- 1:06:58Potholes. And yeah, it's just especially
- 1:07:00here in Colorado or in Seattle, it is they're the right car for
- 1:07:05most people. They're just, they're, they're
- 1:07:07just honest and good and, and they work and yeah.
- 1:07:11Yeah, it was something where I'm like, I'm very happy to show up
- 1:07:14anywhere in this car. Like I'm proud to arrive in
- 1:07:17this. It's.
- 1:07:17Like a pair of jeans, right? Like, you can dress it up.
- 1:07:20You can, yeah, whatever you know, but.
- 1:07:21That's been well, and, you know, and the Wilderness, you know, I
- 1:07:24haven't seen the other trim levels in the most current
- 1:07:27design, but like the level of detail that went into the
- 1:07:31interior and all the little touches.
- 1:07:33But it wasn't too much because sometimes you're like, oh, they
- 1:07:36tried to do too much. Yeah, that is not the case.
- 1:07:38They did such a good job and truly we were saying out loud to
- 1:07:42each other. After having said that, you
- 1:07:44know, six days in a row, we're like, OK, we can't stop saying
- 1:07:47it. We love this car.
- 1:07:48Yeah, yeah, there's just, there's kind of like an old,
- 1:07:50well, I said that in the post, like, you know, hello, old
- 1:07:53friend. Like, I mean, that's kind of how
- 1:07:54they feel. And I will say I think I prefer
- 1:07:57the size. The trail seeker seemed a little
- 1:07:59more tailored. And I I think to me, and it's
- 1:08:04just yeah, that would that there's an appeal in that.
- 1:08:07So yeah, yeah, Subaru, I mean, Subaru's just kind of kind of
- 1:08:13its own lane, but I love them for that.
- 1:08:15You know, sometimes it can be frustrating, but damn, they do.
- 1:08:19They're just great cars. They're just good, honest cars.
- 1:08:21Right, we didn't know that we were going to be writing a love
- 1:08:24letter to Subaru, but here we are.
- 1:08:25No, no. And I didn't really talk about
- 1:08:27that BRZA lot, but that BRZ is, you know, I'm missing it.
- 1:08:31I'm missing it for sure. Yeah, well, that's a good sign,
- 1:08:34right? Very different car from these
- 1:08:36other cars we're talking. What A2 door manual compared to
- 1:08:41a family hauler that you can take off road?
- 1:08:43I don't think you should. Be hard of a car, but they're
- 1:08:45all kind of sweethearts of of of of their, you know, I don't know
- 1:08:49their of their type. Right.
- 1:08:51They do their jobs very well. Yeah.
- 1:08:53Yeah. Anyway.
- 1:08:54All right enough. All right, so.
- 1:08:57So someone texted me tonight like how much is Subaru paying
- 1:08:59you? I said I wish you know, but
- 1:09:03they're endearing. Now what we are happy to, we are
- 1:09:06happy to spend time with their cars.
- 1:09:08So that should tell you something.
- 1:09:10OK, so let's see. The next category is of of the
- 1:09:16cars that you have driven both at the events and press cars.
- 1:09:19Was there one that struck you as being a great option for like a
- 1:09:2420 year old or a college student or you know, somebody early 20s
- 1:09:28kind of just starting out? Was there something where you
- 1:09:30went that is the use case for this car?
- 1:09:33And you can see now kind of pricey for a college kid, but I,
- 1:09:36I think I did a post about this too.
- 1:09:38If you've got high school kid, college kid learning to drive
- 1:09:40stick BRZ is fantastic because he can be Elliot.
- 1:09:44And you know, it is pricey. You know, you don't need the TS
- 1:09:47or whatever, but it'll make an enthusiast out of that, out of
- 1:09:50that recipient. You know, fortunately,
- 1:09:55unfortunately, I don't know, they've driven a lot of cars in
- 1:09:58that class, right. A lot of these cars I think are
- 1:10:02in in the BRZ too. You know, again, probably too
- 1:10:05expensive. You know, I was, you know, so
- 1:10:08you know, if if it's college young person, you got to think
- 1:10:11it's got to be on the cheap end. I don't what have you driven
- 1:10:14that sort of in that class? I don't know.
- 1:10:16That I was just looking at so and we talked.
- 1:10:18About face Wrangler maybe, which wasn't even on our list, but
- 1:10:21like I think would be a pretty great car for a college kid,
- 1:10:24but. Could be, I feel like that one
- 1:10:27maybe incites some hooliganism, which depends on what your
- 1:10:31family's thoughts are on. You know, I've seen hooliganism
- 1:10:35Few. Old Jeeps here in Colorado.
- 1:10:36So yeah, what about what's the what's the smaller EV Subaru?
- 1:10:42So the one that we talked about and I think Lynn has this as a
- 1:10:45long term loan and I had it for a week is the cross track and
- 1:10:48that's a phenomenal to. Yeah, that that would be the car
- 1:10:51for that would be. Yeah, that would be the.
- 1:10:52One, but I was just looking at the cars that we have on our
- 1:10:54list today. I think the Ionic 5 is so nice
- 1:11:00that I feel like because I'm picturing like these are kids
- 1:11:03that are going to be moving regularly or moving frequently
- 1:11:06during those years, parking it on.
- 1:11:08A lot. Yeah, so I think the Hyundai
- 1:11:11Tucson would be a good option. Yeah, actually I just spent the
- 1:11:15week with a Mazda 3 hatchback and that was a fantastic.
- 1:11:19That's that class of Car, right? I've not driven it, but that
- 1:11:22would be the that would be the class of Car.
- 1:11:24But what was so funny is because I was thinking before I got it,
- 1:11:27I'm like, all right, this like the use case is maybe somebody
- 1:11:32that's in a city or there, you know, it's a great option
- 1:11:37because you can take people in it.
- 1:11:38There was plenty of space for my daughter.
- 1:11:40I ended up having some furniture that we weren't using anymore
- 1:11:43and I was able to put that in the back.
- 1:11:45The seats folded down super easily so you could.
- 1:11:47Down the woods. Right, just chucked it out.
- 1:11:50No, I took it to the donation place, but the seat, it was the
- 1:11:55utility of it for the size was striking.
- 1:11:59And so I think that would be a great option.
- 1:12:01But what was funny about the one that I had, it was this
- 1:12:03beautiful kind of champagne, silvery gold color with a black
- 1:12:06interior. And I was telling the fleet
- 1:12:09people, I'm like, this feels like a luxury car with the way
- 1:12:12that it has been, you know, the color way or the spec or
- 1:12:17whatever you want to call it. And the interior was really
- 1:12:21nice. It was a great place to be.
- 1:12:22So it felt very fancy. And then you have the utility.
- 1:12:25And I think it would be great for a college student possibly
- 1:12:28or somebody, Again, if you're like a young professional just
- 1:12:31starting out and you want something that looks nice but
- 1:12:33isn't going to break the bank, that's a good option.
- 1:12:37And let's see, what else. We've talked about the Subarus
- 1:12:41in this way before, but they're kind of like demographic
- 1:12:44crushers, right? You can be a wealthy person, you
- 1:12:47can be a less wealthy person, whatever.
- 1:12:49And it's like, it's never really out of place, right?
- 1:12:51It's like that. 100%, especially in this beautiful color that it
- 1:12:55was like manga is really killing it with paint colors because
- 1:12:58they're very elegant. The red super, you know,
- 1:13:00striking and fun. I'm trying to think what else I
- 1:13:03think the depending on, you know, for the Colorado College
- 1:13:06student, maybe the Trail Hunter Forerunner.
- 1:13:08Trail Hunter is a good option. Yeah, possibly.
- 1:13:11Yeah, yeah, that's those are for those Boulder kids.
- 1:13:14Yeah, exactly. Yeah, Not to do like a very
- 1:13:17narrow use case. Let's see what else.
- 1:13:20I mean, any of this, you know, Subaru, Forester, Outback, any
- 1:13:24of those I think would be a good option.
- 1:13:25Used versions used out, you know, options of.
- 1:13:28Yeah, we're we're saying money's no object, just the car itself.
- 1:13:31I I didn't have a car in college so.
- 1:13:33No, I didn't either actually. So one that I drove at the
- 1:13:38event, which totally caught me by surprise, which is what's so
- 1:13:41fun about doing this, was the Hyundai Venue.
- 1:13:44I don't know if you've seen. One, that's the little one,
- 1:13:46right? This is.
- 1:13:47It looks a little bit like so many club men to me.
- 1:13:51Yeah, yeah. I've not driven.
- 1:13:53That similar. It was great.
- 1:13:56A little car. Yeah.
- 1:13:57Yeah, it was great. I think it'd be great for a
- 1:13:58college student because, And it has a back seat, so you could
- 1:14:01take four people, not for a long trip, but you could fold the
- 1:14:04seat down and take some stuff. And I think because it's
- 1:14:08lighter, it got up and moved on the highway.
- 1:14:11Yeah. And the design into like,
- 1:14:14inside, it felt like a European car.
- 1:14:17And so I got in and I'm like, oh, I feel like I'm on a
- 1:14:19European vacation. That's what was, I was the thing
- 1:14:21you go to Europe or something, you get like some little like
- 1:14:23Renault or something and it's like, yeah, it's a cheap car and
- 1:14:26it, you know, it doesn't feel like, but it's like done right.
- 1:14:28And I think that's maybe the more challenging thing.
- 1:14:31How do you make a, you know, a smaller car feel?
- 1:14:34Yeah, it felt like a treat. Which those cars do not.
- 1:14:37Cars in that class don't always feel like that.
- 1:14:40And I got out and I'm like, that was really fun and I'm really
- 1:14:42glad I got to try it. It's not something that I would
- 1:14:46typically gravitate towards because, you know, I think I
- 1:14:50need a little more space just with people and stuff and all
- 1:14:53that. But I'm like, this is a great
- 1:14:55car, especially if you were in a city and you wanted something
- 1:14:58that was pretty versatile, like good gas mileage, not going to
- 1:15:02break the bank. And the interior, it was like a
- 1:15:062 tone kind of denemy color. It was interesting and fun and
- 1:15:11like, I think it would be a good option.
- 1:15:13And then we drove the Kia K4 hatchback and it drove really
- 1:15:19nicely again, like not enormous, but you could take some things,
- 1:15:23you could take people. I think that would be a good
- 1:15:26option. Yeah, I think, you know, that's
- 1:15:30the Rav 4 those. Are good options, but again,
- 1:15:33don't get your college kid a brand new car.
- 1:15:36No, no, no, like I. Know you got get him one, get
- 1:15:38him a 15,000 dollar $5000. So you're like, come on, you
- 1:15:42know, the kids are. So we're suggesting categories.
- 1:15:46Here, But yeah, let him know what it's like to be on the side
- 1:15:48of the road with a broken down car, you know, or a flat tight.
- 1:15:50I'm Jack, like a man. I don't love that idea, but.
- 1:15:53But no, I don't think anyone should be going and spending,
- 1:15:56you know? Did you post something was like
- 1:15:58Pepperdine or something? The cars that you saw parked or
- 1:16:01maybe you forwarded it from someone?
- 1:16:03Else I think I sent it to you. Yeah, it was a recent, like
- 1:16:06driving through the parking lot at Pepperdine.
- 1:16:08And I was like accurate. Yeah, Pepperdine.
- 1:16:11And I know it's Malibu and you know, but yeah.
- 1:16:14So of all of the cars that we have driven lately, like in the
- 1:16:17last few months, yeah, what would you choose?
- 1:16:20What is your ideal 2 car garage? No budget restriction, yeah.
- 1:16:25Of all the cars OK, so I've I've driven some things you haven't
- 1:16:28driven well that's the thing I. Would.
- 1:16:30Say Mercedes-Benz AMG right? So I have to dip into to that
- 1:16:37fleet. So everything from the CLA 45 SI
- 1:16:41guess it was to the top of the line.
- 1:16:44SL 63 E performance, I think it's called.
- 1:16:48Obviously, that's the you know, that's the barn burner.
- 1:16:51Strangely, though, I was actually drawn to the standard
- 1:16:54S6 SL 63, the non hybrid version.
- 1:16:57So you I think it's only got 600 horsepower instead of 800
- 1:17:00horsepower. Not nearly the torque, but it
- 1:17:01actually felt almost as fast and I found it more fun to drive in
- 1:17:05the twisties because it was just lighter, especially on the front
- 1:17:09end. It just it danced a little more
- 1:17:11easily, but the the car that really surprised me for the
- 1:17:14price point was the CLA 45. I don't love the way it looks
- 1:17:18from certain angles, other angles.
- 1:17:20It looks quite good. And it's the back seat is not a
- 1:17:24place you want to spend extended periods of time as someone who's
- 1:17:2764, but that's the most possible of of that crew.
- 1:17:33The, you know, honorable mention to the the GT63, they call them
- 1:17:39the coupe's. It's this 4 door sedan.
- 1:17:42We didn't have any GT63's the the big long 2 door this year,
- 1:17:48but you know, they all have the same powertrain.
- 1:17:50So I would have to let's go with the standard SL63 in that garage
- 1:17:54to answer the question. And God, you know, I know I've,
- 1:18:02I've, I've given conflicting views on this car, but give me
- 1:18:05that trail. Gonna be bad and the trail
- 1:18:09seeker. Depending on the day, I yeah, I,
- 1:18:12I, I, I long for that car. I cursed that car, that truck.
- 1:18:16But you know, that would be a pretty great two car solution in
- 1:18:19Colorado. But I'd probably plug that
- 1:18:22snorkel. What about you?
- 1:18:24Yeah. And you can pick from the the
- 1:18:27AMG fleet if you want something fun.
- 1:18:30I know. I think so, yeah.
- 1:18:33So what your Tell us again your favorite of the Mercedes?
- 1:18:38The car OK, so the CLA is the car that I happily took when
- 1:18:41everyone else obviously went toward the you know the the the
- 1:18:44SLS. I, I love the SL 63 because it's
- 1:18:50it does everything that the GT coupe does like the actual
- 1:18:53coupe, not the four door coupe does, but you have the option of
- 1:18:56putting the top down. It was it's very structurally
- 1:19:00sound, which I didn't experience in the what is it the Cle
- 1:19:05convertibles? I thought those.
- 1:19:06Had a lot of flux and stuff. The SL63 it's all the car you'd
- 1:19:10ever want. It's not the sports car that
- 1:19:12maybe like a GT3 is or something, but is a is a GT car
- 1:19:16pretty hard to beat. The top goes up and down in
- 1:19:19like, I don't know, 12 seconds and you can do it up to 37 miles
- 1:19:22an hour. So, you know, hopping on the
- 1:19:25highway, you know, until you get up to speed or around town,
- 1:19:28right, You know, you could put the top up and down.
- 1:19:29It's just a a great car. I mean, it's an expensive car, a
- 1:19:32couple $100,000. But I wouldn't I wouldn't even
- 1:19:35waste my money on the E performance or you know, and now
- 1:19:38I'm not factoring in like fuel economy and that kind of thing.
- 1:19:41I would just do the standard S63SL63.
- 1:19:44So there you go. You heard it here.
- 1:19:47Yeah. OK, so I'm afraid that mine
- 1:19:52might be like the perfect six car solution because I'm looking
- 1:19:55at this list and I'm thinking they're just so many great
- 1:20:01options. Like I really enjoyed the
- 1:20:03Genesis G80, loved the Ionic 5. I loved the Mazda CX5.
- 1:20:10I mean, I was given the option of trading it for something else
- 1:20:13and I chose to spend 4 plus more hours and several more days with
- 1:20:16it. Yeah, I mean and the Integra,
- 1:20:21because it's a manual. Oh God, I forgot.
- 1:20:24I know, right? I might actually forgo the
- 1:20:26forerunner for that Integra. Yeah, so.
- 1:20:29And have just as much fun or pleasure, get much get just as
- 1:20:33much pleasure or that Integra as the Mercedes.
- 1:20:35Honestly, it's just, it's a, it's a different experience,
- 1:20:38but. I know.
- 1:20:39I mean, I guess I, I don't know, I can't pick just two is the
- 1:20:45problem because there are so many good ones.
- 1:20:47OK, so I'm just going to say I'm making a new question for
- 1:20:50myself. So the ones that I really loved
- 1:20:52were the Genesis G80, the Hyundai Ionic 5, obviously Mazda
- 1:20:56CX5. I think that would just be a
- 1:20:59fantastic family car. And the one that I had was white
- 1:21:02with this like kind of toasted tan interior.
- 1:21:05So you just felt very elegant in it running around the Acura
- 1:21:11Integra, which I am loving, Subaru Forester Wilderness and
- 1:21:19let's see what else. I don't think you you've still
- 1:21:23reached the the budget that I my.
- 1:21:25I know, so keep going. Yeah, so I have plenty of room
- 1:21:28to play with. It's one thing you know, and
- 1:21:32definitely one of the Ram TRXS well.
- 1:21:37Now, now, you just blew the budget.
- 1:21:38Now I blew past, so you know who's keeping score?
- 1:21:42We got to drive the Kia Telluride.
- 1:21:44Both both of them talk. About that, I forgot to put that
- 1:21:47on the list. And you know, that is a
- 1:21:49fantastic car. Like too big.
- 1:21:51For me it's too big for me but drives great.
- 1:21:55Drives delightfully and it was interesting because we also had
- 1:21:58a Kia Celtos, which is a smaller SUV, at this most recent event.
- 1:22:02I've returned that too. I forgot about it.
- 1:22:04So I, and I don't know about you, I noticed a really big
- 1:22:08difference between the Telluride and the Celtos.
- 1:22:10I had driven the Telluride before at the event in May.
- 1:22:14And so then when I noticed that it was at this one and I hadn't
- 1:22:18driven the Celtos and I thought, well, I've driven the Telluride.
- 1:22:20I, I can guess what this is going to be like.
- 1:22:23It was a very different driving experience.
- 1:22:26I wish it had a little bit bigger engine.
- 1:22:28So, but again, like lovely inside, but if I had to choose
- 1:22:33between the two, I would choose the Telluride because I feel
- 1:22:36plenty of power. It's got a third row seat.
- 1:22:39So you know, for me, I could take kids, dogs, stuff, whatever
- 1:22:44like but it's not enormous. It's still easy to park so I
- 1:22:49would great. Handling thing I drove the the
- 1:22:51off road version, whatever that was called and and hustled it up
- 1:22:54the twisties and had a good time.
- 1:22:56I mean, it protested a little bit, but compared to most
- 1:23:00vehicles of that size, incredibly lovely driving
- 1:23:04dynamics, so. Yeah, we off roaded those at
- 1:23:06Mudfest and it did every did the whole course no problem.
- 1:23:11Yeah. So there's some cars we didn't
- 1:23:13really talk about, but this is an hour and a half, so we
- 1:23:15probably need to wrap this up. Some cars we, I, I think by
- 1:23:17their omission, we, you probably get a sense of our, our take on
- 1:23:21them. But but even those weren't bad.
- 1:23:25It's just like things have gotten so good.
- 1:23:27We've talked about this before. We're in sort of a golden era of
- 1:23:30cars and yeah, there are wonderful hyper cars and things,
- 1:23:33but just the regular cars are so, so good.
- 1:23:36I mean, we grew up with like K cars around and stuff like this
- 1:23:40where that was kind of like what Ford Escorts of, you know, the
- 1:23:4380s or whatever. I mean, we've just, we've, we've
- 1:23:46left so many. I was going to say the leap, the
- 1:23:48leaps and bounds, the advances. Yeah, yeah, the advances are
- 1:23:51are, yeah, yeah, I know. Kind of mind boggling so.
- 1:23:55Well, and you know what? OK, so I have yeah mine is
- 1:23:57probably like an 8 car garage but you know anyway, we're gonna
- 1:24:00just go with it. The magma is fun for the like
- 1:24:04shock value, the color and the noise like the exhaust sounds
- 1:24:08great. I mean, not, you know, exhaust,
- 1:24:11but the engine, the noise sounds great and like it was that
- 1:24:16bright orange colour. And again, Genesis is just doing
- 1:24:19amazing things with their interior.
- 1:24:20It's a great place to hang out. Yeah, their.
- 1:24:22Next generation of cars as they come out, I think is they're
- 1:24:26going to be game changers, you know?
- 1:24:28I mean, on top of what they've already done, yeah, the Lexus
- 1:24:32ES350 EI would absolutely have one of those.
- 1:24:37And let's see. And I would probably let Ryan
- 1:24:41pick a Mercedes for me. So just because why not?
- 1:24:45At this point I already. Those Mercedes AMGS deserve a
- 1:24:49whole other. All the actual.
- 1:24:51Show of their own so. Yeah, I know.
- 1:24:53It's yeah, yeah, that's a show. It is.
- 1:24:57I know it's a. Show and 1/2.
- 1:24:59It is clearly we have so much to say because we have this
- 1:25:03delightful problem where we're getting to drive all these cars
- 1:25:06and obviously we could keep talking.
- 1:25:08So we'll have to just make this a regular feature maybe, but for
- 1:25:11now, I think we will leave it with our multi car garages.
- 1:25:16So we call and wrap it up for this week.
- 1:25:19So we will say thank you so much to our audience for joining us
- 1:25:23and we appreciate you being here and spending time with us each
- 1:25:26week telling your enthusiast friends about the show.
- 1:25:28And of course, if you like what we're doing, please consider
- 1:25:31leaving a five star review and subscribing and liking and all
- 1:25:35of that. Yeah, very important.
- 1:25:37Please do that. Of course it does, it really
- 1:25:39does help others find out about the show.
- 1:25:42Remember to always be driving where that car show and we will
- 1:25:44see you next week.
