- 0:07What's up everyone? Welcome to this day in Philly
- 0:09sports history, for May 18th 2023.
- 0:14I'm your host Jim Montgomery. It's Thursday.
- 0:17It's going to shitty week for Philly fans.
- 0:20This is now. Take three.
- 0:23First time I hit forgot to hit record.
- 0:26Second time I accidentally deleted instead of saving it.
- 0:30So here we go. I know what I'm going to say.
- 0:34So at least we got that going for us which is nice but
- 0:37Phillies update, they lost 72 for last night now, four in a
- 0:43row. They've lost they got swept by
- 0:45the Giants. Good old Gabe kapler or our old
- 0:48pal. They got got down early for
- 0:52nothing to warm Walker. Gave up a four run second inning
- 0:56and then I think it was a second any doesn't matter.
- 0:59And then the He's did battle back to tie it up.
- 1:02They had a couple good Innings there and then blew the bullpen.
- 1:06Blew it in the bottom of the eighth and gave up four runs and
- 1:10then had the bases loaded themselves in the top of the
- 1:14ninth couldn't get it in. And that is basically the mo
- 1:19right now, this team, they get Runners on base and then cannot
- 1:22get them to score. I mean, the starting pitching
- 1:25has been in the bullpen has been inconsistent, but I think the
- 1:30Really the big story is like they're not playing good
- 1:32fundamental baseball, they're making errors poor base running,
- 1:36they're not getting runners in when they're getting on base and
- 1:39in scoring position. And I don't know, at this point,
- 1:42whether they need a players only meeting or what's going on with
- 1:47that, but the Braves it's not like they're running away with
- 1:50the division and if the Phillies could just put together like a
- 1:5310, 15, 20 games, stretch without having a four or five
- 1:58game. Losing streak, let alone Hop
- 2:00over them, they could be right there, back in the mix.
- 2:04Again, it's still early enough but you don't also want to fall
- 2:08too far behind, and it's just frustrating because, you know,
- 2:11that what this team is capable of and they're just not doing
- 2:14it. It's fundamental.
- 2:15It's like, when I keep mentioning the little league but
- 2:18like, when I coach little league, the team, I had, I knew
- 2:21they were going to have one bad, any, it was just a matter of
- 2:24when it was going to happen and then how they would bounce back
- 2:26from it, and that's what the Phillies seem to be doing like,
- 2:29they Have that this year like the theme is they have one bad
- 2:33inning and then they're able to kind of bounce back, but the bad
- 2:37ending is putting them in such a hole that they can't get out of
- 2:40it. Hopefully things start to turn
- 2:43around now and I keep talking about the weather getting warm
- 2:45but it's You got to play well and get get the runners in.
- 2:51Doesn't matter if it's hit and season, if you're not going to
- 2:52hit the guys in and the fact that they are hitting they're
- 2:56just not finishing. The deal is what's frustrating.
- 3:00Speaking of frustrating Union and ugly nil-nil draw last night
- 3:05against d.c. United again.
- 3:07Missed opportunities seems to be the theme of Philly sports this
- 3:12week opportunities or they're just not taking advantage of
- 3:15them. I believe they're in action this
- 3:17weekend then. Against New York, I believe
- 3:20they're up there on the road in New York, but I'll confirm that
- 3:23later. This week Sixers, update James
- 3:27Harden, officially is opting out.
- 3:31Okay, I mean, at this point, I don't even know what to think.
- 3:34He said he wanted to go someplace where he could have
- 3:37basketball, Freedom, whatever. That means, I don't know if that
- 3:41was his shot at Joe shot. It DOC, his desire to kind of
- 3:47have the offense and be the guy somewhere, I don't know, but
- 3:52unfortunately, I feel as though we have painted ourselves into
- 3:56this spot where our best option might be to bring James Harden
- 4:02back and we have a shitty cap situation and they I don't know,
- 4:12like they're, they're kind of hamstrung so we can offer him
- 4:16more money. Does that mean we bring?
- 4:19I don't know and I'm glad it's not something I need to worry
- 4:23about. Maybe we tank.
- 4:25Maybe we go of process Year. Joe gets a mysterious injury and
- 4:31we kind of set him to the side similar to what the Spurs did
- 4:35the year they were able to draft Tim Duncan I mean it's an
- 4:39option. I mean Why not and hope that we
- 4:43get lucky in the dress. I don't even know what that the
- 4:45draft is going to look like next year, but that's an option.
- 4:47So who knows? One thing I do know though is
- 4:51Philly go.com has the greatest selection of Philly based
- 4:57apparel, whether it's Philly. Sports teams.
- 4:59Just Philly in general. They have I was looking around,
- 5:04there's web the web site. The other day, they have like a
- 5:06neighborhood section where you can have.
- 5:08They have shirts for the different neighborhoods in the
- 5:10city, as well as some of the The suburbs to and you know how
- 5:13Philly is like a big neighborhood Centric City so be
- 5:18sure to check that out. Philly go.com use the promo
- 5:22code, Jim Montgomery for 10% off of your order.
- 5:25They do have like I mentioned earlier in this week the the
- 5:28fire doc which now you can jump on the bandwagon, my favorite,
- 5:32the 86, the 76ers, which I will be getting.
- 5:35And then the Philadelphia is second round exeter's t-shirt so
- 5:39be sure to check out Philly goat.com.
- 5:42Retail therapy might be the way to go to help make your week.
- 5:46Go a little better because truthfully it's been a shitty
- 5:48week. Philly go.com is not shitty.
- 5:51Use that promo code. Jim Montgomery at checkout for
- 5:5410% off your order. All right, we're going to go way
- 5:57back today to 1912 and on this day February, or why do I keep
- 6:02saying February? This is how bad I think because
- 6:05February was good, leading up to the Super Bowl until the Super
- 6:09Bowl actually happened. I just want to go back to that.
- 6:11At time 6 is were playing. Well, Flyers were in the the
- 6:15hunt for the first pick. Phillies weren't playing
- 6:19terrible, fundamental baseball. It was like they were coming
- 6:21into spring training, maybe that's why I want to go back to
- 6:24February. But on this day May 18th 1912.
- 6:29The Philadelphia has beat the Detroit Tigers 1:36.
- 6:34Why are we spotlighting this game?
- 6:36Well the Tigers regular players were protesting the fact that Ty
- 6:40Cobb has Received an indefinite suspension for Major League
- 6:44Baseball and we're refusing to play.
- 6:47Ty Cobb was suspended for running into the stands a couple
- 6:49days before and almost beat a fan to death because they he was
- 6:54getting heckled so Major League Baseball and formed.
- 6:59The tigers that they would be fined, heavily the team and the
- 7:04players. If they did not feel the team.
- 7:07So the Tigers manager and A's manager Connie Mack decided,
- 7:11okay, I will pick eight athletes from around the city of
- 7:15Philadelphia, put them on the field.
- 7:17So the Tigers could forfeit. I forget the exact rule of how
- 7:20the forfeits work, but I think you have to have at least eight
- 7:23players and then if you don't have the 9th, you throw one
- 7:26pitch and then that's basically the forfeit then.
- 7:31But Connie Mack being who he was saw an opportunity and said,
- 7:36nah, we're going to play this game out.
- 7:38You're going to play with these Philly athletes.
- 7:42Including gangster and boxer, Billy mchargue.
- 7:46He played third base but the big story was st.
- 7:49Joe's, Junior Allen, Travers pitched his, he was also known
- 7:54as father Travers because he was a priest, but father Travers,
- 7:59gave up nine or 24 runs in nine innings, which is a Major League
- 8:03Baseball record 26 hits, which is the record for hits given up
- 8:07in a nine inning game for a pitcher 14 earned runs seven.
- 8:11Walks and did have a strikeout. He became the only priest to
- 8:15ever play Major League Baseball and truthfully.
- 8:18His name will be forever in the record books because I don't see
- 8:22a picture lasting that long to break touch, let alone their I
- 8:27should say, sniff lonely touch either, those records.
- 8:30But on this day, back in 1912 the A's beat the Tigers 1:36,
- 8:35the Tigers fielded a team of local Philly, athletes to avoid
- 8:41a It for at the pro players protesting, Ty Cobb being
- 8:45suspended, but father, Travers your name will be forever in the
- 8:50record books. Hopefully he was a better priest
- 8:53that he was a picture, but Phillies are Phillies Sixers
- 8:59playoff spot light. We're going to back to 2002 2003
- 9:02Sixers were two years removed from being the Eastern
- 9:06Conference champions. They went 48 and 34 that Year s
- 9:10in the Atlantic. Fourth in the conference.
- 9:13A, I was an All-Star. He averaged 26 points six or
- 9:16twenty seven point six points per game.
- 9:19He started the All-Star Game by the way, Keith Van Horn average.
- 9:22Seven point one is rebounds, Eric snow. 6.6 assist also on
- 9:27that team still holdovers from that Eastern Conference Team.
- 9:30Aaron, McKie Tyrone Hill, they had brought in Derrick Coleman
- 9:34and future. I put a question mark there
- 9:36because maybe his name is being floated around Sixers coach
- 9:40Monty Williams was on that team. Mmmmm.
- 9:42He's kind of one of the the guys that they're really looking at
- 9:45has ties to the Sixers as well as Doc Rivers.
- 9:48So I don't know if that's good or bad but in the playoffs they
- 9:51beat the Hornets. Four games to two in the first
- 9:53round loss to the Pistons for 22 in the conference semis that
- 9:56Pistons team was one year from winning the championship
- 10:00themselves. All right, this has been this
