- 0:17Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:20Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:22Speaker 1: have a guest join us. Long time member of the community.
- 0:25Speaker 1: First time guest. You can check out the RJ Young Show.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Catch him online. Check out his writing at foxsports.com.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Author of two books. Let It Bang and Requiem for
- 0:34Speaker 1: a Massacre. I have blurbed books for this man. So
- 0:38Speaker 1: I had to apologize to him. You look up sometime
- 0:40Speaker 1: and realize you haven't had a guest you meant to
- 0:41Speaker 1: have for a long time.
- 0:42Speaker 2: So RJ, what's going on, man?
- 0:44Speaker 3: Hey man, I be talking back to the show. You
- 0:46Speaker 3: just don't hear it.
- 0:47Speaker 2: That's all.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Nah man, I am glad to have you. Also, RJ,
- 0:53Speaker 1: big OU guy. So I figured that like, Way to
- 0:57Speaker 1: go for you guys, man. That was... Well, one, I
- 1:01Speaker 1: want to actually kind of talk about this a little bit.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We got a lot to get to. Ohio State and
- 1:04Speaker 1: Indiana play this week. There's also another, a very interesting
- 1:08Speaker 1: SEC game that I think is kind of being undersold
- 1:10Speaker 1: across things. But one thing you and I talked about
- 1:13Speaker 1: years ago when OU decided to go to the SEC was.
- 1:16Speaker 2: are you guys really going to enjoy this that much?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Like there are a handful of schools that I feel like,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I understand the moves that had to be made, but
- 1:24Speaker 1: like Arkansas would have enjoyed the last 30 years a
- 1:27Speaker 1: lot more if they were in the Big 12, for example.
- 1:30Speaker 2: There's a handful of those.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But with OU, there is the possibility always that they
- 1:34Speaker 1: could be a top-line competitor in the SEC, but the
- 1:38Speaker 1: floor has changed so much from what it has been
- 1:41Speaker 1: historically for that program.
- 1:42Speaker 2: So like, are you guys enjoying the SEC?
- 1:45Speaker 3: Hell no.
- 1:46Speaker 2: No, no.
- 1:47Speaker 3: No, hell no. You were way ahead on this, right?
- 1:51Speaker 3: It was, hey, look, everybody in there is going to
- 1:55Speaker 3: have that 8-4, that 7-5. Nick Saban is an outlier, right?
- 2:02Speaker 3: Georgia's always been good. They've never been this. They've never
- 2:05Speaker 3: been great. The thing about being an Oklahoma fan, though, twofold. One,
- 2:11Speaker 3: I like winning 11, 12 games a year. I like
- 2:14Speaker 3: knowing that my room is going to stay my room
- 2:18Speaker 3: at this hotel called the college football playoff. And eventually
- 2:21Speaker 3: we'll move up. Right. That was the thought in the
- 2:24Speaker 3: sec dog. I was telling somebody this, this the other
- 2:27Speaker 3: day realized that Vanderbilt got good in a hurry. Texas
- 2:31Speaker 3: A & M can't seem to figure it out all
- 2:34Speaker 3: while Kentucky is kicking that ass. And we got to
- 2:38Speaker 3: worry about every now and again, a Mississippi state or
- 2:40Speaker 3: even Lord help us. If Auburn get good again, everybody
- 2:43Speaker 3: in that league, can put these hands on you. And
- 2:47Speaker 3: at Oklahoma, that ain't, that ain't, that ain't been a
- 2:50Speaker 3: get down, especially for my lifetime. Well, I say my lifetime,
- 2:53Speaker 3: like I gratefully remember very little of the nineties because
- 2:57Speaker 3: I come online as a college football player and it's
- 2:59Speaker 3: like a teenager. So like around 1998, right? By the
- 3:02Speaker 3: time Bob get there, the part that I think that
- 3:05Speaker 3: we really need to discuss though, is I was telling folks,
- 3:09Speaker 3: they were like, this is a rollercoaster with Brent Venables.
- 3:10Speaker 3: I'm going, nah, that's just the SEC, right? You'll go
- 3:13Speaker 3: win 10 games. And then you'll go 7-6 with a
- 3:16Speaker 3: loss to Navy, or 6-7 with a loss to Navy.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And that's just what life is. I'm not enjoying that.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I don't like that.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It is, but you got that one over Texas, right?
- 3:27Speaker 1: Like, the thing that's so interesting with Texas and the SEC,
- 3:31Speaker 1: Texas is a little different than Oklahoma in the sense
- 3:33Speaker 1: that Texas has always been a bit more highfalutin about itself.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Texas reminds me of North Carolina in the sense that
- 3:41Speaker 1: the day will come where North Carolina is trying to
- 3:42Speaker 1: get into the SEC for survival, but it has always
- 3:45Speaker 1: held its nose up in the air about the idea
- 3:48Speaker 1: of getting into the SEC. Texas had also felt that
- 3:51Speaker 1: way while also being in these other conferences where they
- 3:54Speaker 1: had these decided structural advantages where they wanted to stay.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I felt like Texas and Oklahoma both had to go
- 4:01Speaker 1: to the SEC because it was going to become otherwise
- 4:03Speaker 1: impossible to get players because the Big 12 as a
- 4:05Speaker 1: sell job had just gotten to be a little bit
- 4:07Speaker 1: too difficult.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Now they're there.
- 4:10Speaker 1: The Oklahoma question is interesting because we treat Oklahoma like, ooh,
- 4:14Speaker 1: I wonder how they're going to do. Where with Texas,
- 4:16Speaker 1: I felt like, okay, this conference is going to shame
- 4:18Speaker 1: them into finally operating a little closer to capacity because historically,
- 4:23Speaker 1: They wanted to be good. They kind of preferred being
- 4:26Speaker 1: racist for a long time, and then they got over that.
- 4:29Speaker 2: But it was still where OU, you and I have
- 4:31Speaker 2: both read.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Switzer's Autobiography, Bootlegger Boy, where there's a chapter by the
- 4:34Speaker 1: then president who made it very clear OU football is
- 4:37Speaker 1: good because the state decided people needed something to make
- 4:40Speaker 1: them feel good about themselves. Being good at football is
- 4:42Speaker 1: not optional at OU the way it is optional at Texas.
- 4:46Speaker 1: But now, Texas, I feel like you're in the SEC
- 4:49Speaker 1: and you're looking around and you're realizing, yeah, nobody here
- 4:51Speaker 1: has any reason to be better than us, but shit
- 4:54Speaker 1: just keeps happening.
- 4:56Speaker 2: And that kind of needs to stop. Like, I do
- 4:57Speaker 2: wonder at what point they get to the place.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Because it's not, historically, it's not been an impatient job.
- 5:02Speaker 1: People typically get the time to make it work. Sark
- 5:05Speaker 1: better figure this out, though. Because now I think people
- 5:07Speaker 1: are really looking at it like, hey, hey, hey, hey,
- 5:09Speaker 1: come on, man.
- 5:10Speaker 2: What is this?
- 5:11Speaker 3: But who the hell are you going to go get? Like,
- 5:13Speaker 3: that was my other thought, right? Like, I hear you.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Because on the one hand, the recruiting advantage had always
- 5:20Speaker 3: been toward Texas. And we know this. Texas is about
- 5:23Speaker 3: talent evaluations. It ain't about recruiting.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:26Speaker 1: That's where it's tricky, by the way, that they have
- 5:29Speaker 1: to get everyone right. Remember that run where they had
- 5:31Speaker 1: to answer for everybody else's quarterbacks because they didn't get them?
- 5:34Speaker 2: Nobody ever has to do that.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Matt Brown catching hell for RG3, Johnny Manziel, like anybody
- 5:42Speaker 3: that ever came out of Texas at all during that period,
- 5:45Speaker 3: he catching hands for, especially when we was real big on,
- 5:47Speaker 3: I don't know if you remember this, but I remember
- 5:50Speaker 3: this clearly. A, what is it with you recruiting quarterbacks
- 5:53Speaker 3: to play wide receivers? What is it with you recruiting
- 5:56Speaker 3: quarterbacks to play safety? You can't do that down there.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But the only thing was no power conference school offered Robert.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Nobody in the Big 12 offered Robert Griffin.
- 6:09Speaker 1: They only offered after Bryles got the job at Baylor,
- 6:12Speaker 1: but he was going to go to Houston.
- 6:14Speaker 2: A & M did not have to answer for this.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Nobody did they went from having sims to having events
- 6:20Speaker 1: to having it basically went from 16 years as a
- 6:23Speaker 1: school of having great quarterback play to having to answer
- 6:27Speaker 1: for everyone they did not get in a three-year.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Cycle but i can understand it from one standpoint a
- 6:33Speaker 3: you hit on vince and you hit on vince right
- 6:35Speaker 3: when you should have like yes forget they made an
- 6:38Speaker 3: offense that he could finally run and then he was
- 6:42Speaker 3: unstoppable so much so that we put that offense in
- 6:44Speaker 3: at high school like you would run that sort of,
- 6:47Speaker 3: we call it a Texas spread because it was playing
- 6:49Speaker 3: point guard with him. And then you got Andrew Luck
- 6:53Speaker 3: at Stanford and people are going, wait, how'd that boy
- 6:55Speaker 3: get us outside of Texas? But more to the point
- 6:59Speaker 3: that I would make today around Texas is that your
- 7:02Speaker 3: roster is better than almost everybody. There are three teams,
- 7:08Speaker 3: four teams with a roster better than Texas, right? And
- 7:11Speaker 3: we know them all. They're all good. Georgia, LSU, Ohio State.
- 7:15Speaker 3: That's where I'm going to end that. And that is
- 7:17Speaker 3: where we are going to judge you. That's how we're
- 7:19Speaker 3: going to judge you, which is why that loss to
- 7:22Speaker 3: Oklahoma ain't about me feeling good about beating Texas because, oh,
- 7:28Speaker 3: you ain't beat Texas. That's one offensive TV in there
- 7:30Speaker 3: where the quarterback can happen to not put the ball
- 7:32Speaker 3: on the floor or throw the ball to other people.
- 7:35Speaker 3: That was a game that was much more sweet to
- 7:37Speaker 3: me because I watched Texas lose it again and again
- 7:41Speaker 3: and again and again. I had so much fun watching. Wait,
- 7:45Speaker 3: did Arch Manning just throw it in 500? And then
- 7:48Speaker 3: it's like, oh, cool. Can of corn. Oski, let me
- 7:51Speaker 3: take this back to the house. That sort of stuff.
- 7:54Speaker 3: It's fluky. That's the other part. I know Texas is
- 7:57Speaker 3: a good football team. Is it the number one team? No.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Georgia's still on the Death Star Tour. But If you
- 8:03Speaker 3: Steve Sarkeesian, don't come out here talking to me about
- 8:05Speaker 3: what Arch Manning might be considered if his name was
- 8:08Speaker 3: not Manning. Bo, I hate that kind of impractical bullshit
- 8:13Speaker 3: that we be on because, hey man, he is talented.
- 8:17Speaker 3: He just ain't playing to that potential. And you the
- 8:20Speaker 3: play caller, you the quarterback's coach, figure that shit out.
- 8:24Speaker 3: He refuses to do that, or at the very least,
- 8:27Speaker 3: He's coddling a dude I don't think needs to be coddled. Like,
- 8:30Speaker 3: I honestly believe that Arch will handle whatever coaching you
- 8:33Speaker 3: want to give him. But we entered into a space
- 8:35Speaker 3: where Texas has become an apologist. And I hate that.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I need him to be the same, you know, rich
- 8:43Speaker 3: old white man that they've been for a long time
- 8:45Speaker 3: because I can trust that dude.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I tell you this, though.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I still don't think you really want to have problems
- 8:49Speaker 1: with him if it comes to playoff time because head
- 8:53Speaker 1: coach of the defense, Will Buschamp, Them boys is flying.
- 8:56Speaker 1: And Colin Simmons, I think we agree, that's the best
- 8:58Speaker 1: defensive player in the country, right?
- 9:02Speaker 3: No, we don't agree there. He's good. He real good.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Who you got over him?
- 9:06Speaker 3: Chris Cole, Georgia. Yeah, I think that's fair. That dude,
- 9:10Speaker 3: he don't play linebacker. Like, imagine if Caleb Downs was
- 9:15Speaker 3: 20 pounds heavier and we asked him to play in
- 9:17Speaker 3: the middle of the defense. You can't do nothing with him.
- 9:21Speaker 3: That's the problem. Like, with Colin Simmons... I could see
- 9:25Speaker 3: a dude that I could double-team if I could double-team him, right?
- 9:28Speaker 3: But that's not like Aaron Donald in the middle. That's not,
- 9:32Speaker 3: to use a much more recent end, that's not Chase
- 9:36Speaker 3: Young on the outside. However, Raheem Biles, that's another dude.
- 9:42Speaker 3: He transferred in from Pitt. He's from Ohio, right? And
- 9:44Speaker 3: the thing was, He said, look, I don't care nothing
- 9:47Speaker 3: about Ohio State. Went to work on them, by the way,
- 9:48Speaker 3: because they didn't recruit me. And everybody was like, Texas
- 9:51Speaker 3: ain't recruit you neither. Didn't matter. Like, they got dudes. Like,
- 9:55Speaker 3: I think the thing about Colin this year, though, is
- 9:58Speaker 3: that your man must change. has designed a defense that
- 10:02Speaker 3: has allowed for that dude to be one-on-one against your best,
- 10:06Speaker 3: and he will beat him. And that is becoming rarer
- 10:09Speaker 3: at the edge position. Like, there's three or four dudes
- 10:11Speaker 3: that can do that. Outside of him, though, I can
- 10:15Speaker 3: go to four other players I might tell you could
- 10:18Speaker 3: be six seven eight nine ten in as far as
- 10:22Speaker 3: the best defensive players in that league and i think
- 10:24Speaker 3: that's one of the things that makes them great because
- 10:26Speaker 3: that that defense can win a national championship is whether
- 10:28Speaker 3: or not that offense will get online.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah and i i think i talked about this when
- 10:32Speaker 1: we did the show on sunday about arch is that
- 10:35Speaker 1: eli i mean peyton manning got people misunderstanding what mannings
- 10:38Speaker 1: are you know what i mean like like he's the
- 10:42Speaker 1: outlier can i ask you a question yes all right
- 10:45Speaker 1: so We know that Arch is a quarterback.
- 10:48Speaker 3: We know Payton's a quarterback. We know Eli's a quarterback.
- 10:50Speaker 3: We know Archie's a quarterback. What is about Cooper that
- 10:54Speaker 3: said wide receiver?
- 10:59Speaker 2: Well, Cooper the only one of them that was fast.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I've always said I can't imagine how embarrassed Archie was
- 11:05Speaker 1: at having these slow ass boys.
- 11:09Speaker 3: The idea that he also would create a quarterback, right?
- 11:11Speaker 3: Like Marshall Manning is at Baylor, the Baylor school in Tennessee,
- 11:15Speaker 3: which I think it's something like $ 71, 000 a semester or something.
- 11:19Speaker 3: He's going to be that dude. I get that part, right?
- 11:23Speaker 3: I've never quite understood how Arch Manning, who's got all
- 11:26Speaker 3: his dad's speed, size, ability, comes up throwing the football.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Even at a place like Isidore Newman, which is a
- 11:34Speaker 3: 2A highfalutin high school in New Orleans, ain't nobody said
- 11:38Speaker 3: wide receiver to that boy. I'm not saying they do,
- 11:41Speaker 3: but I just always found that fascinating and interesting because
- 11:43Speaker 3: Cooper looks like one of those dudes that, actually low-key,
- 11:47Speaker 3: might be the coolest of the three, and all three
- 11:50Speaker 3: of them brothers is cool. Mm-hmm.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Now, they are.
- 11:54Speaker 1: He has been done in by the name, and I
- 11:57Speaker 1: feel like Archie has done his best to try to
- 11:59Speaker 1: tamp all that stuff down. Like, it doesn't feel to
- 12:01Speaker 1: me like they've leaned into all that hype or everything,
- 12:04Speaker 1: but the way that people talked about him last year,
- 12:05Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, it's people on TV that obviously don't
- 12:08Speaker 1: even mean what they're saying, right?
- 12:10Speaker 2: It's just, we're just going to sell this.
- 12:11Speaker 1: He's the best quarterback or the biggest quarterback.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Since Tim Tebow. First of all, they've been better than
- 12:17Speaker 2: Tim Tebow, like, immediately after Tim Tebow. But the hype machine.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I did not feel at all like Texas or Arch
- 12:25Speaker 1: were responsible for it. It was just a decision that
- 12:28Speaker 1: was made before the season by a lot of people
- 12:31Speaker 1: that this is how we're going to sell the thing.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And yeah, a lot of that's ESPN because ESPN sells Fox.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Fox does a lot of college football, too, but they
- 12:38Speaker 1: don't sell it seven days a week. ESPN sells this
- 12:41Speaker 1: seven days a week and they tried to sell it
- 12:42Speaker 1: off Arch. And then after a week, they was like, shit,
- 12:44Speaker 1: abort mission, man. This isn't a this isn't what we
- 12:48Speaker 1: thought we were selling at all.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I think a couple things happen here. One is the
- 12:53Speaker 3: hype around Arch Manning is deserved from a potential standpoint.
- 12:57Speaker 3: If you just sit there and watch him play 7-on-7
- 13:02Speaker 3: or throw routes on air, you can talk yourself into it.
- 13:04Speaker 3: But I can talk myself into a lot. Another dude
- 13:08Speaker 3: that I think we have overhyped that might be a
- 13:11Speaker 3: good comparison is Lenore Sellers at South Carolina. That is
- 13:16Speaker 3: another dude that people think of like Anthony Richardson at Florida.
- 13:19Speaker 3: It's he's got everything you want from a professional standpoint
- 13:24Speaker 3: of a position of quarterback, physically talented. And I go,
- 13:27Speaker 3: but his decision making ain't there. And I don't trust him.
- 13:30Speaker 3: And every once in a while, both of those guys
- 13:31Speaker 3: will have games. I say all three of those guys
- 13:33Speaker 3: have games where they just take it over. And you'd
- 13:35Speaker 3: be like, OK, if they can get more of that
- 13:37Speaker 3: than what we've seen, it'd be all right. That's never
- 13:40Speaker 3: clicked with Arch. But here's the thing that is going
- 13:42Speaker 3: to make modern football, modern college football so much more fun.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Every year that these quarterbacks play, as starters, they get better.
- 13:51Speaker 3: They don't regress. Not on the whole. Like, Darian Mintz
- 13:54Speaker 3: is out here throwing darts. 84% completion rate, which is absurd.
- 13:58Speaker 3: 21 incompletions on 150 passes. It's absurd. But he's gotten
- 14:03Speaker 3: better each year because now we're getting into, actually, no,
- 14:06Speaker 3: I can play 5 for 5 and they're going to
- 14:08Speaker 3: pay me to play 5 for 5. I think we're
- 14:11Speaker 3: just expecting that dude in Arch Manning to mature at
- 14:15Speaker 3: a much quicker rate than he has. But, think that
- 14:19Speaker 3: dude could stick around for another couple of years and
- 14:21Speaker 3: i think sark would be happy to have him and
- 14:24Speaker 3: then he could finally have something click and then we
- 14:28Speaker 3: in this money man by.
- 14:29Speaker 1: The way that does happen like carson palmer with the
- 14:32Speaker 1: infamous four offensive coordinators in four years while he was
- 14:35Speaker 1: at usc but it really wasn't a thing until the
- 14:37Speaker 1: senior year right and then all of a sudden he
- 14:39Speaker 1: became a quarterback built from granted like all the things
- 14:41Speaker 1: that came around but it was three years of what's
- 14:43Speaker 1: the big deal with this guy and then they finally
- 14:46Speaker 1: figured it out toward the end right like vince young
- 14:50Speaker 1: in halfway through redshirt sophomore year, it was time to
- 14:52Speaker 1: change positions. Then a couple of things change and they break.
- 14:56Speaker 1: And then it goes from there. You mentioned Mensah. I
- 14:57Speaker 1: want to bring this up because Miami has been looking
- 14:59Speaker 1: like Miami. It's interesting though, because we all understand. Cristobal
- 15:05Speaker 1: in a lot of ways is the coach that I
- 15:08Speaker 1: feel like shouldn't be, there shouldn't be too many more
- 15:11Speaker 1: of these anymore.
- 15:12Speaker 2: And this is what I mean. Great recruiter.
- 15:15Speaker 1: You're going to have a clear style of football and,
- 15:19Speaker 1: Scheme and strategy, though.
- 15:25Speaker 2: He's not that different than Les Miles, right?
- 15:28Speaker 1: He's an offensive line coach with a team that's going
- 15:30Speaker 1: to have the mentality, which is a good thing I
- 15:32Speaker 1: mean in this way.
- 15:32Speaker 2: The mentality of the offensive line coach.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But if it comes down to who's making decisions to
- 15:37Speaker 1: win this, you don't have your money on Cristobal.
- 15:40Speaker 2: But they.
- 15:41Speaker 1: They look like they've built, which is the hardest thing
- 15:44Speaker 1: to do, what Dan Lanning keeps trying to do at
- 15:46Speaker 1: Oregon but can't quite, which is building an SEC team
- 15:48Speaker 1: not in the SEC.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Like playing Saban ball not in that conference.
- 15:54Speaker 3: But they're playing Saban ball from like 2015 to 2017.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Kind of like Kirby. No, not like Kirby. Not like Kirby.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Let's come back around to that. It's more like after
- 16:07Speaker 3: Nick figured out, oh, y'all want to do this dual
- 16:09Speaker 3: threat stuff? Y'all want to have these quarterbacks that can
- 16:11Speaker 3: move around? Y'all want to light up the scoreboard? Cool.
- 16:14Speaker 2: All right, let's do it.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Let's do it. He was mad. He was like, is
- 16:17Speaker 3: this what you want football to be? Cool. I can
- 16:19Speaker 3: do that too. Like, you know, hey, Lane, throw this
- 16:23Speaker 3: ball to Amari Cooper a million times.
- 16:25Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 16:26Speaker 3: Henry Ruggs, Jerry Judy. Jalen Waddle, Devontae Smith. That's how
- 16:32Speaker 3: they feel right now. That's Mario Cristobal's Miami. But the
- 16:35Speaker 3: point that I raised about him as opposed to the
- 16:37Speaker 3: Les Miles thing, you are right. Save one thing. Mario
- 16:41Speaker 3: Cristobal knows, knows he is the handsomest man in every room.
- 16:47Speaker 3: He walks around with the kind of swagger that I
- 16:49Speaker 3: think Les Miles should envy. Because that dude walks in
- 16:53Speaker 3: everywhere thinking that it's going to become a place that
- 16:57Speaker 3: is safe. and fun for him. Now, on the other hand,
- 17:01Speaker 3: talking about the on the field stuff, what I call
- 17:03Speaker 3: the head coach and stuff, can he go get you
- 17:05Speaker 3: a bucket as a head coach? I'll never forget. Kirby Smart,
- 17:09Speaker 3: we talk about him as a strategist, but he has
- 17:11Speaker 3: become a head coach, go get you a bucket. Ohio State,
- 17:15Speaker 3: that 2023 college football playoff, it looked like they were
- 17:19Speaker 3: going to kick a field goal, and that was going
- 17:21Speaker 3: to be that, right? And right before that, Kirby out
- 17:23Speaker 3: here getting this time out, right? Getting it right when
- 17:26Speaker 3: you need it. I'm going, If you don't stop the
- 17:27Speaker 3: clock there, everything is in rhythm for Ohio State and
- 17:30Speaker 3: this kicker to go do what they got to do.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Mario stopped making those kinds of mistakes last year. And
- 17:36Speaker 3: look at what happened. They make the national championship game.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Maybe coaches develop too. Maybe. But as much as I
- 17:44Speaker 3: want to give him credit for this, man, Shannon Dawson,
- 17:47Speaker 3: offensive coordinator out there, has been on another level. But
- 17:50Speaker 3: think about it this way. He made Cam Ward and
- 17:52Speaker 3: Carson Beck. into dudes and those are two very different
- 17:55Speaker 3: kinds of quarterbacks running the same system and now we
- 17:59Speaker 3: got a dude that is throwing the ball and more
- 18:01Speaker 3: importantly Bo you've been around a team or watched a
- 18:05Speaker 3: team like Miami where they just don't put the ball
- 18:07Speaker 3: on the floor yeah like that's that's remarkable everybody catching
- 18:10Speaker 3: the ball everybody is catching the ball how do you
- 18:13Speaker 3: contend with that if you know that you got the
- 18:16Speaker 3: surest wide receiver hands and you got this dude Mark
- 18:18Speaker 3: Fletcher that's a load you feel like you could win
- 18:20Speaker 3: every game now they don't play Florida State this week
- 18:23Speaker 3: which is That ain't nobody. I don't think Mike Norvell
- 18:26Speaker 3: going to get fired off that game, but he could
- 18:27Speaker 3: get fired. Notre Dame's the only team that might be
- 18:30Speaker 3: able to beat them, right? Can Marcus Freeman out-coach Mario Cristobal?
- 18:35Speaker 3: The answer should be yes, but at this point, Mario
- 18:37Speaker 3: Cristobal might just be doing enough. He might be doing enough.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Hey, you just mentioned something about Florida State and Norvell.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Are you surprised that nobody's gotten fired yet?
- 18:47Speaker 3: Yes.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Because in the last couple of years, by now, dudes
- 18:49Speaker 1: start getting fired.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Nobody's been fired. Florida State, I mean, the answer seems
- 18:54Speaker 1: to be obvious. They ain't got the money.
- 18:58Speaker 3: And they just fired the athletic director. Yeah.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Oh, that's right. So you got to get the new
- 19:02Speaker 2: athletic director and let him do it.
- 19:06Speaker 3: There was a time when I was talking to Ron,
- 19:09Speaker 3: my best friend, right? And it was like, what is
- 19:11Speaker 3: it with Mike Norvell? And at the time, I was going, hey,
- 19:14Speaker 3: he lose the wrong football game to the wrong team. Like,
- 19:16Speaker 3: he was going to get to play against his alma mater,
- 19:18Speaker 3: which is Central Arkansas. And I was like, he might
- 19:22Speaker 3: not be around for that. He survived that. But Norvell
- 19:25Speaker 3: having to survive at Florida State has been way less
- 19:29Speaker 3: fun than I thought it would be. I thought perhaps,
- 19:32Speaker 3: because remember, that dude's not just from Central Arkansas. He
- 19:34Speaker 3: was also a grad assistant at T.U., I knew him
- 19:37Speaker 3: casually right at TU, but this is a Malzahn guy.
- 19:40Speaker 3: And I always thought that that offense, my track and
- 19:42Speaker 3: what he was doing in Memphis had been working. But
- 19:44Speaker 3: now I've come to think of Memphis kind of like
- 19:46Speaker 3: James Madison's is just one of these programs where head
- 19:48Speaker 3: coaches just tend to win. Right. For whatever reason. Now
- 19:52Speaker 3: you get to a place like Florida State where winning
- 19:56Speaker 3: in the Bobby Bowden era becomes kind of what you expect.
- 19:59Speaker 3: And then Jimbo kind of pushed it as far as
- 20:01Speaker 3: I think you can push it without pissing people off
- 20:03Speaker 3: and then piss people off. Now we're at a place
- 20:06Speaker 3: where I'm not sure what Florida State is. And that's,
- 20:09Speaker 3: I mean, I really want to get that back to
- 20:10Speaker 3: you because we can make a discussion. We can have
- 20:13Speaker 3: a different discussion about 2013 Florida State, right? I think
- 20:16Speaker 3: that's one of the worst teams to win a national championship,
- 20:18Speaker 3: but that's me.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Really?
- 20:20Speaker 3: Yeah. No, I'm not.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Despite all the talent and despite the results.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 2: That's a hot take. Look, I'm... Is it just because
- 20:33Speaker 2: of Jimbo?
- 20:35Speaker 3: Some of it. Some of it. Some of it. It's also,
- 20:39Speaker 3: the Jameis that I saw, I'm going, man, look, if
- 20:43Speaker 3: I give this to other dudes, is he going to
- 20:45Speaker 3: be that good? No, he's going to be 30 for
- 20:47Speaker 3: 30 like he was at Tampa. You know, that was
- 20:50Speaker 3: the other... I had a hard time with them because
- 20:52Speaker 3: I thought the schedule wasn't always there. I thought they...
- 20:55Speaker 3: trying to remember that game that sticks out in my brain,
- 20:59Speaker 3: that they flubbed up and it was found money. It'll
- 21:04Speaker 3: come to me because I'm going from 2012 with Notre
- 21:08Speaker 3: Dame and Alabama to that team. I was going, this
- 21:10Speaker 3: Alabama team from 2012 would beat the hell out of
- 21:12Speaker 3: this team. And then we go to the college football playoff, right?
- 21:15Speaker 3: And then I have to go in my head, does
- 21:16Speaker 3: this Ohio State team get beat by that Florida State team? No,
- 21:21Speaker 3: it's also the last year of the BCS. But again,
- 21:23Speaker 3: back to the Florida State point today, I'm not sure
- 21:27Speaker 3: who they are. Who are they to you?
- 21:30Speaker 1: The problem they've got is, and Miami had to adjust
- 21:34Speaker 1: to this also, the competitive advantage that they had through
- 21:39Speaker 1: the 80s and 90s truly was they got on this
- 21:42Speaker 1: thing that their neighbors weren't really trying to get on,
- 21:45Speaker 1: which is, what if we get all the best players
- 21:48Speaker 1: that we possibly can?
- 21:51Speaker 2: How about we do that?
- 21:52Speaker 1: Now, that might mean 11 black dudes on defense. It
- 21:57Speaker 1: just might, but we're going to do it anyway, right?
- 22:00Speaker 1: Like that was the advance. Like what advance did Bobby
- 22:04Speaker 1: Bowden make? recruiting black dudes. What was the strategy on defense?
- 22:09Speaker 1: We're going to rush four and drop seven and be
- 22:11Speaker 1: faster than everybody. Dominique always talks about this on offense.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Even at the time when he was in school, he
- 22:16Speaker 1: was like, all they ran was ghosts were goals and posts.
- 22:20Speaker 2: That was all it was like. There was, there was,
- 22:21Speaker 2: there was nothing at.
- 22:23Speaker 1: All advanced in what they did other than go and
- 22:27Speaker 1: get the best players. So now that you get to
- 22:32Speaker 1: this place, The ACC caught Florida State. And it wasn't
- 22:36Speaker 1: that Florida State really lagged back in total. The rest
- 22:39Speaker 1: of the world started recruiting Florida a little bit more.
- 22:42Speaker 1: The ACC caught up with them and they became just
- 22:45Speaker 1: an ACC school.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Post Jimbo, that's largely what they've been. And they're at
- 22:50Speaker 2: a good location.
- 22:51Speaker 1: At least it used to be before money, because the
- 22:52Speaker 1: thing that people misunderstand geographically is how far north in Georgia,
- 22:57Speaker 1: Athens is. And how far that is from South Georgia
- 23:00Speaker 1: to where Florida State is the home team for a
- 23:03Speaker 1: lot of those kids in South Georgia, for example.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Well, now if it comes down to money, they ain't
- 23:08Speaker 2: got it.
- 23:09Speaker 1: So what actual factual advantage does Florida State have that
- 23:15Speaker 1: they can leverage right now?
- 23:18Speaker 2: I don't see it.
- 23:19Speaker 3: To your point, it used to be like my daddy's
- 23:21Speaker 3: from Campbellton, Florida, which is in the panhandle. It didn't
- 23:26Speaker 3: have a dot on the state map until like 2004, right?
- 23:31Speaker 3: But we always called it Lower Alabama because it's Dothan, Alabama.
- 23:36Speaker 3: It's not that far away, right? And you could get
- 23:38Speaker 3: to Georgia. And Jacksonville might as well be Lower Georgia.
- 23:42Speaker 3: So when you could recruit those- Yes.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Yes, it is.
- 23:47Speaker 3: So you could recruit that. And one of the things
- 23:49Speaker 3: I would point to people is, when did you know
- 23:51Speaker 3: that Florida State was going to take a dive? When-
- 23:55Speaker 3: That big dude from Ulee, Florida, didn't give Florida State
- 23:59Speaker 3: a look.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Derek Henry ending up at Alabama and bypassing both Florida
- 24:05Speaker 3: and Florida State altogether told me everything I needed to know.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Because if you looked at what that man was doing
- 24:12Speaker 3: in high school, again, he ain't playing against anybody. I mean,
- 24:16Speaker 3: they had a rule for him. They take him out
- 24:17Speaker 3: after they score so many touchdowns. absurd, right? But he
- 24:22Speaker 3: didn't look at Florida State. He didn't look at Florida.
- 24:26Speaker 3: He always was looking at Georgia and Alabama. That was it.
- 24:31Speaker 3: And I remember thinking to myself, so where did we
- 24:35Speaker 3: get all these players? We, being a guy that was
- 24:37Speaker 3: from Florida, Tidewater, right? The idea, another way of putting this,
- 24:42Speaker 3: realized that Bobby Bowden was in a position to stash
- 24:46Speaker 3: Randy Moss.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:49Speaker 3: And it didn't hurt him. It didn't hurt him.
- 24:51Speaker 2: And Peter Warrick.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Lord have mercy. There's only one program that could do
- 25:00Speaker 3: that today. Only one. It's Georgia, right? Like everybody else,
- 25:05Speaker 3: you got to play them. Yeah. You got to play him.
- 25:08Speaker 3: It's like, nah, I told the president that I would let,
- 25:10Speaker 3: I would tell Randy he got to sit for the year. Why?
- 25:13Speaker 3: Why here?
- 25:16Speaker 1: This is Florida State. You guys could, one game and
- 25:22Speaker 1: all the controversy would disappear.
- 25:25Speaker 3: One game. And that dude, man, like, I so wanted
- 25:30Speaker 3: to see him play at Florida State because it was,
- 25:33Speaker 3: it was the opportunity to see a really great player
- 25:36Speaker 3: On what was one of the best programs in all
- 25:38Speaker 3: the college football. I'm also looking around at the rest
- 25:41Speaker 3: of this and asking, like, because we have this discussion
- 25:44Speaker 3: quite a bit, I think, out loud. What has name,
- 25:48Speaker 3: image and likeness done to the sport in so far
- 25:52Speaker 3: as the talent advantage? Because, again, a lot of this
- 25:54Speaker 3: is based on area. Can you recruit the area? Do
- 25:57Speaker 3: you have a pipeline, right? Did you run the oil
- 26:00Speaker 3: pipeline all the way out to California to get it
- 26:02Speaker 3: to come back to Oklahoma? Yeah, we did. Ohio, did
- 26:05Speaker 3: you run it all the way down to South Florida
- 26:06Speaker 3: to get it to come back? Yeah, we did. That
- 26:08Speaker 3: ain't true no more. And the loyalty to the brand
- 26:12Speaker 3: is only true for a few. And I think that's
- 26:14Speaker 3: gone out the window because one of the things that
- 26:16Speaker 3: always kind of got to me was Texas, going back
- 26:18Speaker 3: in a second. Jalen Milrow did my show in high school,
- 26:23Speaker 3: coming out of Katie Tompkins. It was good. It was
- 26:25Speaker 3: real good. And he had committed to Texas at the time.
- 26:28Speaker 3: And I said, hey, man, you know what I know
- 26:30Speaker 3: about Texas. Why you want to go to Texas? Or
- 26:33Speaker 3: just all I ever want to do. That's the school.
- 26:36Speaker 3: That's what means the most to me. And then Mike
- 26:39Speaker 3: Yursich got in there and did the dumbest thing ever
- 26:41Speaker 3: and pulled the offer. And Nick Saban said, hey, Jalen,
- 26:45Speaker 3: you want to come to Tuscaloosa? Back to that point
- 26:49Speaker 3: that I think you put me on. Nick was really
- 26:52Speaker 3: the first dude that said, I don't care what you
- 26:56Speaker 3: look like, I want to win at LSU, right? And
- 27:00Speaker 3: ever since then, looking at LSU, anybody can win there,
- 27:04Speaker 3: which I think is the reason why I would never
- 27:05Speaker 3: hire Mariah Kelly for another job. Anybody can win at LSU, right?
- 27:09Speaker 3: Because that was the thing, just recruit the state. That
- 27:13Speaker 3: doesn't exist anymore. And I'm curious, especially as you have
- 27:16Speaker 3: been doing a little bit more reporting around this, do
- 27:21Speaker 3: players actually give a damn?
- 27:23Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I think the money now, money in the depth chart
- 27:29Speaker 1: are going to answer the question, but the money is
- 27:30Speaker 1: going to speak to the money in the depth chart
- 27:33Speaker 1: like this right here, right? They're not going to offer
- 27:36Speaker 1: you so much to not play. To me, markets are
- 27:40Speaker 1: going to work out most of this by and large.
- 27:44Speaker 1: The trick is going to be, can you evaluate the
- 27:47Speaker 1: guys that not everybody else is on and get them
- 27:51Speaker 1: cheap for like a year? because ain't nothing going to
- 27:54Speaker 1: last for long man I can't imagine trying to work
- 27:56Speaker 1: in these programs just like pure unadulterated chaos every year
- 28:00Speaker 1: everything changes it's I get why they feel like it
- 28:03Speaker 1: needs saving it don't need saving but it does need
- 28:05Speaker 1: some guardrails like I think that we would all like
- 28:07Speaker 1: by a large degree just not necessarily the ones that
- 28:10Speaker 1: they try to put in but right fast coming up
- 28:13Speaker 1: next we're going to talk also a little bit about
- 28:14Speaker 1: what's coming up this week and just how good is

- 29:34Speaker 1: Prize picks run your game. All right, we are back
- 29:37Speaker 1: with RJ Young. We have Ohio State. state in Indiana
- 29:41Speaker 1: and a Titanic football clash. Ohio state maybe has the
- 29:45Speaker 1: chance to break up Indiana's 22 game winning streak. Again,
- 29:49Speaker 1: these things that we're saying about football. I have not
- 29:53Speaker 1: watched this Indiana team play as much. Everything I've seen
- 29:57Speaker 1: from Ohio State has just involved Jeremiah Smith doing incredible things.
- 30:02Speaker 3: I've watched a lot of both of these teams because
- 30:05Speaker 3: I'm fascinated, right? Like I had Indiana as my preseason
- 30:08Speaker 3: number one and I had Ohio State as my preseason
- 30:10Speaker 3: number two. With the thing being this October 17th being
- 30:14Speaker 3: circled way in advance, especially after the Big Ten Championship
- 30:17Speaker 3: and especially after Indiana ran right through Alabama and Oregon
- 30:22Speaker 3: on the way to beating Miami for a national title.
- 30:27Speaker 3: The Hoosiers in football. Okay.
- 30:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 30:31Speaker 3: The thing about this Indiana team that is interesting, though,
- 30:33Speaker 3: is that defensive front is still nasty. They got two
- 30:36Speaker 3: dudes on that defense that ought to be playing the
- 30:38Speaker 3: NFL now, but got the fifth year back. So they
- 30:40Speaker 3: came back, right? And Stephen Daly and Kellen Wyatt. And
- 30:45Speaker 3: Nick Marsh is one of my favorite football players to
- 30:49Speaker 3: watch because he is the first wide receiver I've ever
- 30:51Speaker 3: seen who doesn't take any time off. He puts his
- 30:54Speaker 3: hands on everybody all the time, loves to block a
- 30:57Speaker 3: cornerback into the dirt as if it's his job. And
- 31:00Speaker 3: then in winning time, he can go make that play
- 31:02Speaker 3: for you. They got two dudes at Indiana, Charlie Becker
- 31:06Speaker 3: and Nick Marsh, that can go make plays. Josh Hoover
- 31:08Speaker 3: went from turnover machine at Texas Christian to 17-0 as
- 31:11Speaker 3: a TD to INT ratio at Indiana. Let me tell
- 31:15Speaker 3: you something.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Joel is going to love you saying that because nothing
- 31:18Speaker 1: Joel loves more.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Than a strike against Sonny Dykes. There it is right there.
- 31:25Speaker 3: The offensive line is doing all that work, right? That
- 31:28Speaker 3: would be the knock on Sonny's offense is, hey, you
- 31:31Speaker 3: asking that dude to stand back there for three sec
- 31:33Speaker 3: is not one to go. And Kirk is going, why
- 31:36Speaker 3: are you still holding on to football? Right. Let it go.
- 31:39Speaker 3: And they got, you know, they got tailbacks that can
- 31:41Speaker 3: make it work. On the Ohio State side, right fast,
- 31:44Speaker 3: it's not just Jeremiah Smith. It is Julian Sane. They
- 31:50Speaker 3: got a quarterback. Like I've said, Ohio State gets to
- 31:53Speaker 3: play the game with another queen on the chessboard. And
- 31:55Speaker 3: that queen is Jeremiah Smith. He's open if it's one-on-one.
- 31:58Speaker 3: He's sort of open if it's two-on-one. Somebody else is
- 32:02Speaker 3: open if it's three-on-one. And Julian has been making that
- 32:05Speaker 3: right decision so far. They just can't run the football
- 32:08Speaker 3: as well as they like. And their offensive line, which
- 32:11Speaker 3: returns all five starts from last year, is still not great.
- 32:15Speaker 3: So you can get to them. And Texas could get
- 32:17Speaker 3: to them. And that was part of it. But you
- 32:19Speaker 3: also saw in that game, Ohio State had a 20-point lead, dog.
- 32:22Speaker 3: They just blew it. I'm excited about this. Clearly, I'm
- 32:25Speaker 3: excited about this.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Where are you on Ryan Day?
- 32:30Speaker 3: I don't think I've seen a man adapt to what
- 32:33Speaker 3: the expectation is from his base. Better than Ryan Day.
- 32:39Speaker 3: I think he's a good football coach. I do. I
- 32:41Speaker 3: also think that he knows every year is a year
- 32:47Speaker 3: he can get fired for losing the wrong game. And
- 32:52Speaker 3: he's lost that wrong game a little more often than
- 32:56Speaker 3: he should. In 2024, that is, yeah, they won the
- 33:01Speaker 3: national championship, but they had to. And I don't think
- 33:05Speaker 3: that's true anywhere else in the country. Anywhere else in
- 33:09Speaker 3: the country. We're not going to say because you lost
- 33:11Speaker 3: to Michigan, you got to get fired, especially after the
- 33:14Speaker 3: rest of it. Or Kyle McCourt, who got the hell
- 33:17Speaker 3: up out of there as a quarterback because he lost
- 33:19Speaker 3: that game and nobody wanted to see him anymore.
- 33:22Speaker 2: They won 11 games.
- 33:24Speaker 1: So the thing that's interesting about that to me is
- 33:27Speaker 1: if the John Cooper years are any indication, and people
- 33:30Speaker 1: tell me things are different than they were then, but.
- 33:34Speaker 2: I hold off on that.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I just bring that up to say they waited until
- 33:38Speaker 1: Cooper went like six and six before they fired him.
- 33:42Speaker 1: You'll just wish you had gotten fired. It's kind of
- 33:45Speaker 1: like Alabama. Alabama didn't always fire. Ray Perkins got out
- 33:50Speaker 1: of there. Bill Curry kind of sort of got fired,
- 33:53Speaker 1: but in the end, you could say that he got
- 33:54Speaker 1: out of there.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Franchoni got out of there.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Ohio State is one of those where they're not necessarily
- 34:00Speaker 1: going to fire you.
- 34:01Speaker 2: You're just not really going to enjoy it.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I don't know what Ohio State would have to do
- 34:05Speaker 1: for Ryan Day to get any credit for it.
- 34:07Speaker 2: But I'll tell you this.
- 34:08Speaker 1: I was watching some of one of those games on
- 34:10Speaker 1: Sunday with the Commanders of Washington against the Giants of
- 34:13Speaker 1: New York, and you see Arvell Reese and Sonny Stiles
- 34:17Speaker 1: playing like beasts, and it makes you come back to
- 34:20Speaker 1: fucking Ryan Day and be like, you guys lost two
- 34:22Speaker 1: games last year, huh?
- 34:24Speaker 3: How?
- 34:25Speaker 2: You lost to Indiana? You had those guys on your team?
- 34:28Speaker 3: Oh, man. So to your point about dudes just kind
- 34:31Speaker 3: of sticking around but not liking it, Clear this up
- 34:34Speaker 3: for me. Gene Stallings was given his walking papers or told, hey,
- 34:39Speaker 3: if you come back, you're not going to like it.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of the differences.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Okay, okay.
- 34:46Speaker 2: He won a national championship there.
- 34:48Speaker 3: They were really good. Incredible record, right? And for some
- 34:53Speaker 3: of these programs, your record doesn't mean anything at all.
- 34:56Speaker 3: And that's what I love most about college football. You
- 34:59Speaker 3: can go 12-0 and we might go you to fifth
- 35:01Speaker 3: best team in the country, maybe. eighth, ninth. You know,
- 35:04Speaker 3: we don't really care about that part. How good do
- 35:07Speaker 3: we think you were supposed to be?
- 35:08Speaker 1: They read Jay Stallings out of there in a year
- 35:12Speaker 1: where they won the division and they lost the SEC
- 35:15Speaker 1: championship game to Florida that won the national championship. Finished
- 35:21Speaker 1: number 11 in the country.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I love knowing that because it also underscores just how
- 35:29Speaker 3: quick the fuse is and When people keep telling me that,
- 35:32Speaker 3: you know, I'm of the opinion college football is too
- 35:34Speaker 3: big to fail, they just won't let it. The money's
- 35:37Speaker 3: getting huge. I'm not going to say out of control
- 35:40Speaker 3: because every now and again, somebody comes up with enough
- 35:43Speaker 3: money to go get done what you want to get done.
- 35:45Speaker 3: Or my favorite part of this about you're not going
- 35:48Speaker 3: to like it or we're going to get you up
- 35:49Speaker 3: out of there, Mike Gundy had two losing seasons at
- 35:52Speaker 3: Oklahoma State, 20 years, two, right? That last one was
- 35:56Speaker 3: real bad, and it hurt, and it didn't look good.
- 36:00Speaker 3: They came up. It's like, did you come out? How'd
- 36:02Speaker 3: you come up with the buyout? Because we thinking they poor. No,
- 36:05Speaker 3: we came out of that with our general operating budget.
- 36:09Speaker 3: I'm sorry. You came out to check in account for this? No,
- 36:13Speaker 3: we got it. We got it. And then, hey, we
- 36:17Speaker 3: want to go get North Texas, tell them to put
- 36:19Speaker 3: their body in the U-Haul, drive them up three hours north.
- 36:22Speaker 3: We're going to make it happen. It's like, okay, cool.
- 36:24Speaker 3: What you going to pay the head coach? You know,
- 36:26Speaker 3: between three and five. All right, that's cool. What you
- 36:28Speaker 3: going to pay the quarterback? You know, between three and five. What?
- 36:34Speaker 3: Y'all got it like that? And that's where we look
- 36:37Speaker 3: at Ohio State. They were the first people to say, oh,
- 36:40Speaker 3: money's the thing now? Cool, we got it.
- 36:42Speaker 2: $ 20 million?
- 36:44Speaker 3: Here.
- 36:45Speaker 2: To be fair, it's always been the thing there.
- 36:49Speaker 1: And they've always been.
- 36:51Speaker 2: I don't know if you remember this. And you probably do.
- 36:55Speaker 1: This is where the age difference comes in, but I
- 36:56Speaker 1: think you'll remember it. There's the infamous Maurice Claret ESPN,
- 37:01Speaker 1: the magazine cover story where he talks about how if
- 37:04Speaker 1: he could get a hundred million dollar contract, he would
- 37:06Speaker 1: go to the NFL.
- 37:07Speaker 2: It is crazy to think what.
- 37:08Speaker 1: A giant controversy it was that a man said, yes,
- 37:12Speaker 1: if I could get a hundred million dollars, I.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Would go do the thing to get it right. It
- 37:16Speaker 2: is wild. The controversy we manufactured of that, but.
- 37:20Speaker 1: His sophomore year where he doesn't get on the field,
- 37:23Speaker 1: I forget what exactly the issue was, but at some
- 37:26Speaker 1: point he got mad and he called Gene Wojciechowski, I
- 37:29Speaker 1: believe it was Gene Wojciechowski, and he laid out exactly
- 37:33Speaker 1: how the money worked at Ohio State. He laid out, like,
- 37:37Speaker 1: you come in, boom. This is where you go to
- 37:39Speaker 1: get the cash. This is where you go to get
- 37:41Speaker 1: the car. This is where you go to do all
- 37:43Speaker 1: these things. And we just said, poppycock. None of that
- 37:47Speaker 1: could possibly be true. It was so obviously true. It
- 37:51Speaker 1: was in a reputable publication. Nobody even really tried to
- 37:54Speaker 1: say it wasn't true. We said it was poppycock, but
- 37:57Speaker 1: nobody really said it wasn't true because nobody.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Sued or anything like that. Just laid that shit out
- 38:02Speaker 2: there completely. And we're just like, yep.
- 38:04Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Let's talk about something else. Hold on, hold on.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Two years later, or one year later, is when Troy
- 38:13Speaker 1: Smith gets caught because Trestle sent him to the Farmore
- 38:16Speaker 1: dude to go get a couple thousand dollars.
- 38:20Speaker 3: I think no one has caught more hell for saying
- 38:24Speaker 3: the quiet part out loud than Maurice Claret.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Let me go to the NFL, please. No, nobody would
- 38:31Speaker 3: think to say that today because dudes is trying to
- 38:33Speaker 3: get that money.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 38:35Speaker 3: If they can see in the gap. Other thing about
- 38:36Speaker 3: that is, man, I still have so much I want
- 38:40Speaker 3: to know about and from Jim Trestle because the man
- 38:43Speaker 3: that I see.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Fascinates me.
- 38:47Speaker 3: The man that I see is not necessarily the man
- 38:50Speaker 3: that is coaching them, right? Because the way in which
- 38:53Speaker 3: they talk about the man that is coaching them and
- 38:55Speaker 3: the man that I see, they don't gel for me.
- 38:58Speaker 3: And yet... That is, that is, I'm not even sure
- 39:02Speaker 3: what that dude's political opinions actually are. I know he's
- 39:05Speaker 3: a tunic governor, but I don't know him.
- 39:07Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I am so fascinated by him because nothing adds up.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Because those guys love him. And when I say those guys,
- 39:19Speaker 2: I mean.
- 39:22Speaker 1: They love him. He learned how to navigate Youngstown. He
- 39:27Speaker 1: became a university president. He is now the lieutenant governor.
- 39:34Speaker 1: By the way, and lost his job because he wouldn't snitch.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Do we not love a white man that can read
- 39:41Speaker 3: the room? He's amazing. I'm thinking about this myself. There
- 39:47Speaker 3: are just some dudes that you think are cool And
- 39:49Speaker 3: you'd be like, nah, he can roll. He can fall through.
- 39:51Speaker 3: That's all right. And Jim Trestle, in a sweater vest,
- 39:55Speaker 3: managed to be one of them dudes.
- 39:57Speaker 1: And here's what I think is interesting about it.
- 39:59Speaker 2: And this is just a read. I don't know this
- 40:01Speaker 2: for certain. But.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Nick Saban, I am positive. Because I know you've seen
- 40:06Speaker 1: that clip where Nick Saban at the people's house doing
- 40:08Speaker 1: the electric slide that time. Nick Saban know how to
- 40:10Speaker 1: do the electric slide, the bus stop, the Harlem Shuffle,
- 40:13Speaker 1: cha-cha slide. He can do them all, right? He has
- 40:18Speaker 1: gone in all them houses and done all the stuff
- 40:20Speaker 1: and the other food, everything else. I don't think Jim
- 40:22Speaker 1: Trestle coming in there doing none of that stuff. But
- 40:24Speaker 1: I think Jim Trestle is, ain't no room that Jim
- 40:27Speaker 1: Trestle doesn't feel like he can just walk up in.
- 40:30Speaker 2: And so they may ask Jim Trestle to get out
- 40:32Speaker 2: there and dance.
- 40:33Speaker 1: He'll be like, I really don't do that, but I'd
- 40:35Speaker 1: sure love another slice of that sweet potato pie.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Mm-mm, delicious.
- 40:40Speaker 3: He was a dude that understood the job, too. Like
- 40:42Speaker 3: Ryan Day understood the job. Urban is different because Urban
- 40:45Speaker 3: kind of is made, I think, of Ohio State. I
- 40:50Speaker 3: think he is a smart football fan come to life
- 40:52Speaker 3: in many respects for them. Ryan Day is a dude
- 40:55Speaker 3: that came from playing for and coaching under Chip Kelly.
- 40:58Speaker 3: And we know what that man's culture might do or
- 41:01Speaker 3: look like. Not everybody's on the team. And then he
- 41:03Speaker 3: shows up at Ohio State as the OC, and he's
- 41:06Speaker 3: great because he does a thing that I didn't think
- 41:08Speaker 3: Ohio State was ever going to do. They throw the football. Like,
- 41:11Speaker 3: people forget this. You know this because you're like me.
- 41:15Speaker 3: You come up with this. Three yards in a cloud
- 41:17Speaker 3: of dust is Ohio State football. Yes. And basically since 2018,
- 41:20Speaker 3: it's like, no, no, no. We're going to air it out.
- 41:23Speaker 3: And not only are we going to air it out,
- 41:25Speaker 3: We're going to have the best wide receivers in the
- 41:27Speaker 3: country for a decade. You can do that at Ohio
- 41:32Speaker 3: State because everybody on the program. And I don't know
- 41:36Speaker 3: that I've seen that at this level anywhere else. To
- 41:39Speaker 3: your point, you can always get it because everybody understands. No, no, no, no.
- 41:43Speaker 3: We like the Bengals. We tolerate the Browns. The protein
- 41:48Speaker 3: is in Columbus. Yep. I didn't think that homeboy was
- 41:51Speaker 3: going to be able to learn that as quickly as
- 41:53Speaker 3: he did. But as soon as Ryan Day clicked with
- 41:55Speaker 3: that and it came to go, oh, it's all on me?
- 41:57Speaker 3: Y'all going to give me everything else I got? Cool.
- 42:00Speaker 3: This is what I'm going to put in front of you.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Trussell got that job and went to that basketball
- 42:05Speaker 1: game and told them, don't you worry.
- 42:08Speaker 2: We're going to beat Michigan.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Understood the assignment understood the assignment.
- 42:14Speaker 3: This is why this is why kyle winningham is going
- 42:17Speaker 3: to lose this game this year.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Hey man we said that early on here when he's
- 42:21Speaker 1: up there like i don't have to hate those people
- 42:24Speaker 1: maybe you don't but you do.
- 42:29Speaker 3: You you look put another way uh Ryan Day gets
- 42:34Speaker 3: home from their game. I forget which one it was,
- 42:37Speaker 3: but it was Iowa had just beaten Michigan on that
- 42:40Speaker 3: Hank Brown pass. It was cathartic for a lot of us.
- 42:44Speaker 3: But one of the beat writers asked about the press conference, hey,
- 42:47Speaker 3: did you happen to catch that dramatic win of Iowa
- 42:50Speaker 3: beating Michigan? And he goes, oh yeah, I enjoyed that.
- 42:54Speaker 3: And I'm like, yo, I've never heard a head coach comment,
- 42:58Speaker 3: I enjoyed watching this other team lose, Because it's uncouth, right?
- 43:03Speaker 3: It feels disrespectful, but at that place, it is on brand.
- 43:07Speaker 3: What you're going to say, and we will go about
- 43:09Speaker 3: our business as if, yes, I want to destroy that team.
- 43:13Speaker 3: I'm going to win all the other games too, but
- 43:15Speaker 3: I got to destroy that team.
- 43:16Speaker 1: No, let me tell you, my 10 years in North
- 43:19Speaker 1: Carolina helped me to better understand college.
- 43:23Speaker 2: A consuming rivalry.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Now, Carolina Duke is a genteel rivalry by and large.
- 43:30Speaker 1: It rarely goes too far, but it is never ending.
- 43:34Speaker 1: It's on 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
- 43:38Speaker 1: 365 days a year, where you could be anywhere and
- 43:41Speaker 1: it puts up that Duke lost at anything.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Duke lost in field.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Hockey and Chapel Hill is going to be a standing ovation.
- 43:49Speaker 2: It never stops. Is it just a game? No, it's not.
- 43:54Speaker 2: The game is part of this bigger thing.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Like, but it's never just about the game, even though
- 44:01Speaker 1: the game is very, very important.
- 44:02Speaker 2: You have to understand.
- 44:04Speaker 1: And I guess BYU, Utah, I guess it's just not
- 44:07Speaker 1: consuming in that way. I mean, it's obviously important. They
- 44:10Speaker 1: call it the holy war, for God's sake. But apparently
- 44:12Speaker 1: it's not as consuming as I thought it was.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Okay, so on that point, Notre Dame and BYU this Saturday,
- 44:19Speaker 3: it's a matchup of two undefeated top 10 teams. At
- 44:22Speaker 3: least one of those teams we think can play for
- 44:24Speaker 3: and win the national championship, that'd be Notre Dame. That
- 44:26Speaker 3: game is in Provo. That's also the game that is
- 44:28Speaker 3: replacing Notre Dame-USC, which is a rivalry that I never
- 44:32Speaker 3: really understood and never got into because it is the
- 44:34Speaker 3: antithesis of what you just described and Duke Carolina, right?
- 44:39Speaker 3: Like I just, I'm not there. What I think your
- 44:43Speaker 3: big point about where college football is going and how
- 44:46Speaker 3: we some of us don't really care about the college
- 44:50Speaker 3: football playoff. I do. I love that. I'm of that generation.
- 44:52Speaker 3: I want to see a playoff. However, this is the
- 44:55Speaker 3: kind of game that used to rate because it would
- 44:58Speaker 3: have all Catholics and Mormons. We got two programs that
- 45:02Speaker 3: are proud, two programs that are private, two programs that
- 45:06Speaker 3: ostensibly should want to hurt each other. And I don't
- 45:09Speaker 3: get that going into the Saturday night game on ESPN that, again,
- 45:13Speaker 3: features two unbeatens in the top 10, in large part
- 45:18Speaker 3: because this is a college football play-in game.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:21Speaker 3: And less of a, no, we got to win.
- 45:23Speaker 1: I tell you this, though, I bet it's going to
- 45:25Speaker 1: be cracking in that stadium, though. That's the biggest thing
- 45:28Speaker 1: to happen in Provo in quite a while. Like, BYU
- 45:30Speaker 1: to me is an interesting, sneaky program in terms of
- 45:33Speaker 1: its importance.
- 45:34Speaker 2: And when I say that, I mean this.
- 45:38Speaker 1: You want BYU into big 12 because everybody just got
- 45:42Speaker 1: them a sellout this year.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Ooh, you know what I mean? Like it's, or even
- 45:46Speaker 2: if it's not a full sellout, you put BYU on
- 45:49Speaker 2: your schedule. It's a lot, no matter who you are
- 45:53Speaker 2: or where you are, it's a lot more Mormons there
- 45:55Speaker 2: than you realize. You know how I know that? There's
- 45:59Speaker 2: a Mormon church on 127th street and Lenox. in Harlem, USA.
- 46:07Speaker 3: I was damn near 37 before I learned that.
- 46:11Speaker 1: I remember the first time I walked past and I
- 46:13Speaker 1: was just like, okay, I had no idea. But all
- 46:17Speaker 1: I'm saying is they are a bigger, they matter in
- 46:21Speaker 1: a different way than I think that people realize, right?
- 46:23Speaker 1: Like that is, it is the representation of the Church
- 46:31Speaker 1: of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints in public. that is
- 46:35Speaker 1: treated with the greatest level of normalcy than any other.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Like they're going to, in the NIL era, they're going
- 46:41Speaker 1: to be good because they got money.
- 46:44Speaker 2: All right. They are going to spend the money.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Because like I said about OU, there's an importance to
- 46:50Speaker 1: this team being good.
- 46:52Speaker 2: And they're going to be, they're going to have it
- 46:54Speaker 2: rocking for that game.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Like I hope, I hope that Marcus Freeman understands you're
- 46:59Speaker 1: going to be going over there to play at Altitude,
- 47:02Speaker 1: Some of those guys on that team are 36 years old.
- 47:07Speaker 3: And, oh, by the way, Bear Bachmeier looks like a
- 47:10Speaker 3: child in the face. That is 270. I know they
- 47:14Speaker 3: list him at last, but 270 pounds of, oh, ooh,
- 47:17Speaker 3: here's my comp. People hate this. I like saying it
- 47:19Speaker 3: out loud. Jamarcus Russell. Ooh. That's the comp.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Who, just so people understand, was a beast in college.
- 47:29Speaker 3: Look, look, they're going to play the game without their
- 47:31Speaker 3: best player in the Big 12 offensive player of the
- 47:33Speaker 3: year last year, L.J. Martin, tailback, right, BYU. But since then,
- 47:38Speaker 3: it has become the Bear Bachmeier show. And either he's
- 47:41Speaker 3: going to throw you open or he's just going to
- 47:43Speaker 3: do what Jamarcus could do or for the younger generation,
- 47:48Speaker 3: what Josh Allen can do. Just run through your defense.
- 47:52Speaker 3: Get to the sideline. The way they beat TCU, it
- 47:56Speaker 3: was a close game. Texas Christian should have lost that.
- 47:59Speaker 3: I'm sure that one really hurt. Oh, Joe from Missouri city. However,
- 48:04Speaker 3: it was bear Bachmeier running through the middle of the
- 48:07Speaker 3: defense for 17 yards for a TD to win that
- 48:11Speaker 3: football game. And you know, like Chris Ash got a
- 48:14Speaker 3: defense over there. If Leonard Moore plays, that's the best
- 48:17Speaker 3: defender in the sport on the perimeter, right? Best cornerback, right?
- 48:20Speaker 3: First round pick at the cornerback position. But outside of that, like,
- 48:24Speaker 3: playing it out to, playing with that crowd in your ear,
- 48:27Speaker 3: yelling at you the whole time, and if BYU can
- 48:30Speaker 3: control the football behind bear running right, bear running left,
- 48:34Speaker 3: it becomes a game that they can win. I think
- 48:36Speaker 3: you're right about what the atmosphere is going to be.
- 48:38Speaker 3: But to your point about how important it is, we
- 48:41Speaker 3: got dudes that have already written into their will what
- 48:43Speaker 3: BYU is getting, and they're millionaires.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:47Speaker 3: I've heard about people giving part of their estate to
- 48:50Speaker 3: the school, I've never heard about people being in their
- 48:52Speaker 3: 30s saying that I've already done this. It's already done.
- 48:54Speaker 3: Don't worry about it.
- 48:55Speaker 2: The look on your face.
- 49:00Speaker 3: You know, like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
- 49:03Speaker 2: You got a lot of time.
- 49:04Speaker 3: You say it, right? And you got children, I'm sure,
- 49:07Speaker 3: that are mad as hell. I always enjoy meeting somebody
- 49:10Speaker 3: that has the nerve to be mad about a trust
- 49:12Speaker 3: foreigner inheritance or something they were supposed to get. Nah, nah, uh-uh.
- 49:17Speaker 3: If they want to give it to the football team,
- 49:19Speaker 3: I'm all for that because A, I like football and B,
- 49:23Speaker 3: I want to know what these men actually love. Actually love.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Because too much of this is around business now. It
- 49:31Speaker 3: used to be a sunk cost that wasn't one because
- 49:34Speaker 3: we all knew what we were sinking it into. I'm
- 49:37Speaker 3: going to go spend this money that is absurd on
- 49:39Speaker 3: this player. You're not getting any of that back. Don't
- 49:41Speaker 3: nobody care about that, but I do. And I get
- 49:45Speaker 3: to say that part out loud. They still got that
- 49:46Speaker 3: at BYU. And I think they still got that at
- 49:48Speaker 3: Notre Dame. That I think is what might power us
- 49:52Speaker 3: into the future is there's still a few of us.
- 49:54Speaker 3: They got a little bit more money than we need
- 49:57Speaker 3: that are going to go. How much does that five-star cost? Cool.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Here you go. Yeah.
- 50:02Speaker 2: That's it.
- 50:02Speaker 1: I say this again about the sport. People don't get it.
- 50:05Speaker 1: Nobody's in this for a profit. And that's that. They're
- 50:10Speaker 1: in it for money, but not for a profit. Ball
- 50:13Speaker 1: till you fall. That's the nature of this. Last thing
- 50:16Speaker 1: before we get out of here. We got Ole Miss
- 50:18Speaker 1: and Mizzou this week, and I actually think this is
- 50:21Speaker 1: a very underrated game, not just because I think Mizzou
- 50:23Speaker 1: is probably a little better than people might think, but
- 50:27Speaker 1: this Austin Simmons-Trinidad-Chambers matchup where these were the– Austin Simmons
- 50:32Speaker 1: was number one on the depth chart to start the
- 50:34Speaker 1: year last year at Ole Miss.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Not the greatest start, got hurt, Chambliss took over, and.
- 50:40Speaker 1: We see what that has become, where Chambliss is probably
- 50:42Speaker 1: the best quarterback in the country right now. However, Austin
- 50:45Speaker 1: Simmons is playing really well for Mizzou this year.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Austin Simmons was a big deal.
- 50:50Speaker 1: I don't get the feeling these two dudes have any
- 50:52Speaker 1: sort of animus, but it's still a really interesting matchup,
- 50:55Speaker 1: and it's one that Ole Miss has got to go
- 50:56Speaker 1: play on the road.
- 50:58Speaker 3: They're similar, too, because they both got quarterbacks that can
- 51:01Speaker 3: spin it, and they both got tailbacks that are otherworldly.
- 51:04Speaker 3: Jamal Roberts became the first SEC tailback to rush for
- 51:08Speaker 3: 200 yards back-to-back games against an SEC opponent since Fournette
- 51:13Speaker 3: and Derrick Henry.
- 51:14Speaker 2: That's one.
- 51:15Speaker 3: Two is, Austin Simmons is kind of a unicorn. Like,
- 51:19Speaker 3: he graduated high school at 16 and, you know, got
- 51:22Speaker 3: the Masters at 19, but lost his job after he
- 51:26Speaker 3: kind of sprained his ankle. And the dude that they
- 51:27Speaker 3: brought in has thrown for 300 yards a game in
- 51:31Speaker 3: every game. Like, you're not getting your job back off that.
- 51:35Speaker 3: The thing is, and I I think you'll love this, honestly.
- 51:40Speaker 3: Pete Golding will be the reason that they lose that
- 51:43Speaker 3: football game. I have never seen a man so interested
- 51:49Speaker 3: in holding a play card that probably shouldn't because the
- 51:53Speaker 3: defense gets worse when he's coaching it in the regular
- 51:56Speaker 3: season and then it turns up in the postseason. And
- 51:59Speaker 3: now you got a guy in Austin Simmons who has
- 52:01Speaker 3: spent the last three years playing against your defense. Knowing
- 52:05Speaker 3: exactly what you're doing. And that is his calling card.
- 52:09Speaker 3: He reads the game. He's very good cerebrally. He's had
- 52:13Speaker 3: a couple games where I'm going, hey, what's going on here?
- 52:15Speaker 3: And it has been guys dropping the football, right? Or
- 52:18Speaker 3: the run game hasn't been there. But I'm interested insofar
- 52:22Speaker 3: as I think Austin Simmons has the core processor to
- 52:26Speaker 3: take apart a Pete Golding defense in a way that
- 52:28Speaker 3: is going to make that man maniacal. because he is
- 52:31Speaker 3: so much of an X's and O's guy that he
- 52:34Speaker 3: thinks his defense ought to be like Bill Walsh's West
- 52:38Speaker 3: Coast offense. If you do it, it works. Nah, not
- 52:41Speaker 3: against a dude that sees it because he has the
- 52:43Speaker 3: ability to make you wrong. That is what I think
- 52:45Speaker 3: is going to be fun.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Here's my question on that part. I asked this somewhat rhetorically.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Pete was kind enough to give me 10 to 15
- 52:52Speaker 1: minutes when I did the feature on Chambliss. I recall
- 52:58Speaker 1: him telling me, that it did not take him very
- 53:00Speaker 1: long to realize who should have been the starting quarterback of.
- 53:03Speaker 2: That team and that it should have been Chambliss.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Now, that may be, on one hand, simply him thinking
- 53:11Speaker 1: very highly of Chambliss in that time, or B, it
- 53:14Speaker 1: is some combination of that, and he ain't really see.
- 53:19Speaker 2: It for Austin Simmons.
- 53:22Speaker 1: And I am curious how whatever his personal evaluation was
- 53:27Speaker 1: from that time how that goes into the game plan
- 53:31Speaker 1: that we are talking about here. Because there is a
- 53:34Speaker 1: world in which Pete underestimates this dude, and there's also
- 53:37Speaker 1: a world where one day Pete says something a little
- 53:39Speaker 1: wild to that boy at practice, and.
- 53:41Speaker 2: He remembers this, and now we're going.
- 53:44Speaker 1: And to be clear, he didn't say anything bad about
- 53:47Speaker 1: Simmons to me, right? I don't want to pretend like
- 53:50Speaker 1: he trashed him. But he was really like, yeah, I
- 53:54Speaker 1: could tell pretty quickly that this was the guy. He
- 53:57Speaker 1: says this after he's now the head coach and Chambliss
- 53:59Speaker 1: is his guy. But I would be very curious to
- 54:02Speaker 1: know in his own heart of hearts what he really
- 54:04Speaker 1: thinks of Simmons as a player and how that goes
- 54:06Speaker 1: into what this game is going to be.
- 54:09Speaker 3: I think his assessment to you is the correct one
- 54:13Speaker 3: based on his point of view, which is defensive coordinator.
- 54:17Speaker 3: And what defensive coordinators hate more than anything else is
- 54:20Speaker 3: a dude that can make the wrong just running around.
- 54:22Speaker 2: That's right.
- 54:24Speaker 3: That ain't what Austin Simmons is going to do. right?
- 54:27Speaker 3: Unlike what Justin Dart was going to do because, I mean,
- 54:30Speaker 3: maybe Pete forgot that Austin went into that game and
- 54:34Speaker 3: immediately drove them down the field because he knew what
- 54:36Speaker 3: the offense was doing and he was accurate with the ball.
- 54:39Speaker 3: That is why he won the job in camp, right?
- 54:42Speaker 2: It was that.
- 54:43Speaker 3: Trinidad was still a dude that was D2 from Ferris State, which,
- 54:46Speaker 3: by the way, is around the way from Michigan, but
- 54:47Speaker 3: somehow they didn't go recruit him and was supposed to
- 54:51Speaker 3: be kind of there for, you know, if something goes bad,
- 54:53Speaker 3: something goes wrong. Well, it kind of did go bad
- 54:55Speaker 3: and He kind of turned out to be who he is.
- 54:57Speaker 3: But I think if Austin could move around, he might
- 55:01Speaker 3: change his assessment just a little bit more or Austin
- 55:03Speaker 3: was willing to move around. That ain't what he does.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Trinidad is a playmaker, especially when the game is on
- 55:09Speaker 3: the line like that. That's a guy that I'm terrified
- 55:12Speaker 3: of as a defense coordinator, because I know when it's tight,
- 55:14Speaker 3: he's going to raise up. And I know when I
- 55:15Speaker 3: got a defense that got everybody covered up, he could
- 55:18Speaker 3: still beat me, get into a first down mark.
- 55:22Speaker 2: R.J.
