- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Lake, what brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 0:02Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. You start with
- 0:05Speaker 1: a job, you end with a career, Jeff, Let's start
- 0:08Speaker 1: with the greatest strength on the team, the best player
- 0:12Speaker 1: on the team. You wrote about him in the last
- 0:15Speaker 1: couple of days. Is it humanly possible for patrick's Ortan
- 0:21Speaker 1: to be even better than he has been so far
- 0:25Speaker 1: in his NFL career?
- 0:27Speaker 2: He thinks, so yeah, I guess that's that tells you
- 0:30Speaker 2: something about him. I think a little bit too, And
- 0:34Speaker 2: actually it's it's funny. I didn't get to include it
- 0:37Speaker 2: this time, but I remember one of the first conversations
- 0:40Speaker 2: with Champ Bailey I had about Pat Sertan, and that
- 0:45Speaker 2: was one thing Champ picked up immediately on was when
- 0:50Speaker 2: Sir Tan asked questions, it wasn't just to be in
- 0:55Speaker 2: the act of asking a question or appearing to be
- 0:59Speaker 2: in quiz or he was really looking for answers.
- 1:02Speaker 3: And there's a big difference.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I think a lot of times players feel like young
- 1:07Speaker 2: players ask him questions just because they feel like they
- 1:10Speaker 2: should be participating in class.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Instead of really getting answers.
- 1:15Speaker 2: And he he asked questions in search of answers as
- 1:19Speaker 2: a rookie, and I just remember Champs saying that that
- 1:24Speaker 2: that's different. And and you know, I wrote a story
- 1:29Speaker 2: last year, a year and a half ago or so,
- 1:32Speaker 2: of the four of the best corners in Bronco history,
- 1:35Speaker 2: Louis Wright, Chris Harris to keep to leave, and Champ
- 1:39Speaker 2: Bailey talking about pats Er Tan, and I will never
- 1:42Speaker 2: forget Louie Wright saying if he continues to play like this,
- 1:48Speaker 2: he'll be the best of us. And that's that is
- 1:52Speaker 2: unbelievable praise from a guy who still watches the Broncos
- 1:57Speaker 2: very carefully and knows more football than you know, in
- 2:02Speaker 2: his little pinky than I have in my whole body. Maybe,
- 2:05Speaker 2: But now I find it interesting that he's had two
- 2:09Speaker 2: years when Jeremy Fowler does his annual rankings and Sir
- 2:14Speaker 2: Tan's been the easy winner both years, you know, among
- 2:17Speaker 2: league executives, best corner in the league. I think the
- 2:20Speaker 2: one quote this year he had in the story was
- 2:22Speaker 2: it's not close. Yeah, despite all the arguments you get
- 2:27Speaker 2: in the media, as it were. But I think it's
- 2:31Speaker 2: interesting in that context that he's also had his two
- 2:36Speaker 2: most penalized seasons. So I think that's something Sir Tanz
- 2:40Speaker 2: looked at as well, is why are the flags coming?
- 2:43Speaker 2: Which ones are legitimate, which ones are technique issues? You know,
- 2:47Speaker 2: he separates them and tries to fix them. And some
- 2:51Speaker 2: of it is the scheme they play vance. Joseph wants
- 2:55Speaker 2: their corners up on receivers and you're gonna get flagged
- 2:59Speaker 2: when you play that way, and they've been flagged you know,
- 3:02Speaker 2: as a secondary, but that's how he wants them to
- 3:05Speaker 2: play in the current NFL.
- 3:07Speaker 1: When you talk to those guys, those luminaries of the position,
- 3:11Speaker 1: not just in Bronco history, in NFL history, and Jeff,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I know you like to get granular when you talk
- 3:16Speaker 1: to those guys. What are some of the tiny nuances
- 3:19Speaker 1: of what certain does that?
- 3:22Speaker 4: Again?
- 3:23Speaker 1: The all time greats appreciate and say, okay, that's what
- 3:27Speaker 1: separates him.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I think nd it's the the rarest of combinations
- 3:33Speaker 2: that he maybe more physically gifted just height, weight, speed
- 3:41Speaker 2: than most any I mean, there are very few corners
- 3:45Speaker 2: in NFL history that have been constructed on a human
- 3:49Speaker 2: being level, like past Certan.
- 3:52Speaker 3: You just don't see many. I've you know, I can.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Count on one career, but you put on top of that,
- 4:00Speaker 2: he's one of the fastest players at the position. His
- 4:04Speaker 2: technique is among the best or the best footwork, hands,
- 4:08Speaker 2: the rest of it. And all of those guys when
- 4:13Speaker 2: I spoke to him, talked of the little things that
- 4:16Speaker 2: he does.
- 4:17Speaker 3: You know, his preparation. You know, he's already talented.
- 4:21Speaker 2: A lot of times talented players don't prepare as hard
- 4:24Speaker 2: because they're talented. But he prepares as if he's trying
- 4:28Speaker 2: to overcome a flaw that.
- 4:31Speaker 3: He doesn't have. And as a result.
- 4:35Speaker 2: And I'll never forget in the story, it keep to
- 4:37Speaker 2: Lee picked out a pretty routine looking interception against Carolina
- 4:42Speaker 2: that the yearbook that year, and.
- 4:46Speaker 3: He said, if you.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Look at it just as a fan, it looks like
- 4:50Speaker 2: the ball's overthrown. And then he proceeded to break down
- 4:54Speaker 2: that Sir Tan had played that perfectly, knew the route
- 4:59Speaker 2: and was waiting for the ball, you know, in the
- 5:03Speaker 2: coverage scheme. So you've got the preparation, the work ethic,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and then the talent on top of it. That's that's
- 5:10Speaker 2: a rare combination. And you know, we watch practice, we
- 5:17Speaker 2: all go out there for training camp. When does pats
- 5:21Speaker 2: Ertan not look engaged in practice, and I think that's
- 5:26Speaker 2: how he maintains concentration in games when quarterbacks avoid him
- 5:31Speaker 2: for two and a half quarters and then they go
- 5:33Speaker 2: after him to see if they can get the boredom completion.
- 5:37Speaker 2: You know, am I going to get the boredom play
- 5:40Speaker 2: where he slips up?
- 5:41Speaker 3: You know?
- 5:41Speaker 2: We get him on the double move because he's he
- 5:45Speaker 2: hasn't been thrown out all day and he rarely gets
- 5:48Speaker 2: sucked into that stuff.
- 5:51Speaker 5: All right, Jeff, So the rookies have been there, you
- 5:54Speaker 5: talked to us last week about how they've acclimated, and
- 5:56Speaker 5: then tomorrow the bets take their turn, and then we
- 5:58Speaker 5: get a couple of days to hear how the acclamation
- 6:01Speaker 5: orientation process has been going, and then finally get some.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Camp officially any ramp up practice.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Ramp up, and then Friday, So then what what is Friday?
- 6:12Speaker 3: Look?
- 6:13Speaker 5: But Friday is still the whole out of pads thing, right,
- 6:15Speaker 5: They can't put on pads till Monday. They taking on
- 6:18Speaker 5: the schedule.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I think, yeah, I'm not sure what what day full
- 6:23Speaker 2: pads will be initially, but uh, they do Wednesday, Thursday
- 6:29Speaker 2: will just be sort of the ramp up. Those look
- 6:31Speaker 2: like off season practices Friday Friday will look them more.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Yeah, they all do that.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Friday Friday will be more like a training camp practice
- 6:42Speaker 2: people are used to because they're going to have everybody,
- 6:44Speaker 2: you know people out there.
- 6:45Speaker 4: So it'll be music.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I think if people.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Came all the way out for a ramp up practice,
- 6:51Speaker 2: they might they might not be as excited.
- 6:53Speaker 4: But you you, you'd mentioned last week that you know,
- 6:59Speaker 4: basically you suggested you you you talk to us about
- 7:02Speaker 4: how Davis Web needs to call this thing more like
- 7:05Speaker 4: a practice and.
- 7:06Speaker 5: Not necessarily like a game. What will you be looking
- 7:10Speaker 5: for to adjust to be an adjustment? Well, what will
- 7:14Speaker 5: we see that lets us know Jeff Legwell is happy
- 7:17Speaker 5: with what he's seen?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Well, I uh, I lost it there at the end.
- 7:24Speaker 3: But what what.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Should we How will we know that it's being called
- 7:28Speaker 5: the way you'd rather be called than what we saw before?
- 7:32Speaker 2: I was asked, you know, a first time play caller,
- 7:34Speaker 2: what are you looking for? And that's what I look for, Uh,
- 7:38Speaker 2: getting work in, you know, against certain looks and things,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and that's that's a little more structured in training camp.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Like training camp practice, script is pretty locked in about
- 7:51Speaker 2: what you're doing in that period. You know, I just
- 7:54Speaker 2: thought in some of the off season work he was
- 7:57Speaker 2: really trying to dial stuff up all the time, and
- 8:00Speaker 2: maybe that's what they hope to see them do, but
- 8:04Speaker 2: I thought there was a little too much of that.
- 8:08Speaker 3: In my humble, tiny opinion. But I think training camp,
- 8:14Speaker 3: I think it will.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Be far more structured in terms of, okay, this is
- 8:17Speaker 2: a third down period, this is a two minute period.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But I sometimes think it's great for fans. And do
- 8:24Speaker 2: you know, I don't think people should go out there
- 8:26Speaker 2: and be bored. I'm not endorsing, you know, boredom as
- 8:29Speaker 2: a as a as a philosophy.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Media.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I think, you know, it's cool for
- 8:37Speaker 2: people to see, uh, some some big plays, some some
- 8:42Speaker 2: trick plays, some you know, a little zesty, you know,
- 8:46Speaker 2: a little zestiness.
- 8:48Speaker 3: But I think too.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Much of that is is when you're trying too hard
- 8:51Speaker 2: instead of really getting down into the details of hey,
- 8:57Speaker 2: we need this from the run game and September. You know,
- 9:01Speaker 2: let's make sure these looks match up against the looks
- 9:05Speaker 2: you're gonna get and that type of thing. That's always
- 9:07Speaker 2: just kind of what I look for. It always varies
- 9:09Speaker 2: with first time play callers, and I'm just intrigued to
- 9:13Speaker 2: see how it goes with him. Because he's former quarterback,
- 9:17Speaker 2: He's gonna naturally want to be aggressive, you know, and
- 9:20Speaker 2: really get it cranked up, and that will be intriguing
- 9:23Speaker 2: to see.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Let's talk about Davis Webb's boss for a minute. Sean
- 9:26Speaker 1: Payton heard of him. Sean Payton is a guy that
- 9:31Speaker 1: last year, the messaging of the off season was we
- 9:36Speaker 1: are Super Bowl good, we are a contender. We believe
- 9:39Speaker 1: we're ready to do that. Based on what you've heard
- 9:43Speaker 1: of the messaging in this offseason, Jeff, what do you
- 9:47Speaker 1: expect Seawn's theme of this training camp to be that
- 9:52Speaker 1: he's gonna want everybody to know about his football team
- 9:54Speaker 1: and that he's gonna want his football team to know.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I think his message will be a little bit of
- 10:00Speaker 2: what it was as the season ended. Hey, we know,
- 10:04Speaker 2: close games are not, you know, a transferable thing.
- 10:10Speaker 3: You know. I think he's gonna hammer.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Away at that for the players because he doesn't want
- 10:13Speaker 2: him thinking that, you know, they're close games savants all
- 10:17Speaker 2: of a sudden because they won a bunch last year.
- 10:20Speaker 3: And I you know, on a personal.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Level, in the media biz, I may keep a tracker
- 10:26Speaker 2: of how many times he stops somebody from asking about
- 10:29Speaker 2: running it back because.
- 10:32Speaker 3: He really doesn't like that characterization.
- 10:35Speaker 2: He thinks they've gone to work and that they you know,
- 10:39Speaker 2: his philosophy is that you'll always leave last season behind.
- 10:44Speaker 2: And you know, just because they brought almost every single
- 10:47Speaker 2: player back doesn't mean they're just gonna do the same things,
- 10:51Speaker 2: you know, over and over again. So those are the
- 10:54Speaker 2: two things I think he'll want to He'll want to
- 10:57Speaker 2: get in about the message of the new season, but
- 11:00Speaker 2: he still thinks they're very good and that you know,
- 11:03Speaker 2: but I think he wants the players to understand that, hey,
- 11:09Speaker 2: you know, six of those games could have gone either
- 11:11Speaker 2: way last year and we're talking about a whole different season.
- 11:15Speaker 3: If that's the case.
- 11:17Speaker 5: I'm always curious, what do you think the old preseason
- 11:19Speaker 5: approach is going to be. Sean's been fairly consistent where
- 11:22Speaker 5: he has played his guys. But I mean, this is
- 11:25Speaker 5: an established team with pretty much every every key figure
- 11:28Speaker 5: is back. They know the drill, you're you're quarterbacks coming
- 11:32Speaker 5: off the old ankle surgery and all that. You've got
- 11:34Speaker 5: a running back that I'm sure they don't want to
- 11:36Speaker 5: risk losing any sooner, you know than necessary if you
- 11:39Speaker 5: will beat with his injury history, will we see less
- 11:43Speaker 5: of the regulars in preseason this year, do you think?
- 11:45Speaker 5: Or do you think it'll always be because he plays
- 11:47Speaker 5: them all a little bit in all three games, right
- 11:49Speaker 5: or does he I'm trying to remember, does he leave
- 11:51Speaker 5: him out the third game now or no.
- 11:54Speaker 3: The third game?
- 11:54Speaker 2: He's been less inclined to play as many, but there's
- 11:58Speaker 2: some who still make an appearance.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Uh Andy.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I think he believes they guy's got to play in
- 12:06Speaker 2: the preseason. It doesn't mean, you know, Zach Allen or JK.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Dobbins are gonna play as many snaps, you know, even
- 12:14Speaker 2: Bowl as some others, but the veterans are gonna play.
- 12:18Speaker 2: He hasn't given people, you know, the Gilligan hat knight,
- 12:24Speaker 2: you know, as he calls it, where you just get
- 12:26Speaker 2: the stand in your in your floppy hat. And you
- 12:29Speaker 2: know it's why he he guys have to be in
- 12:32Speaker 2: their uniforms, you know, even if they don't play. You know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: he just believes you're suiting up for the game like
- 12:38Speaker 2: you will in the regular season. And he uses the
- 12:41Speaker 2: phrase you gotta be calloused, and I think he thinks
- 12:45Speaker 2: there's value in that.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Well, ever, it will.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Surprise me if he ever changes playing them all.
- 12:50Speaker 3: He'll just snaps. You know. He's not like.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Those you know, you know you got to go out
- 12:56Speaker 2: there and play forty snaps in a preseason game. He's
- 12:59Speaker 2: not going there. But you're gonna play a little bit
- 13:02Speaker 2: and you're gonna have to suit up, prepare, warm up
- 13:06Speaker 2: playing the game, even if it's for two drives.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Go he by the way, that's a big thing with him.
- 13:12Speaker 1: He loves the warm up process. Remember last year, didn't
- 13:14Speaker 1: he have his list of like fourteen items that he
- 13:16Speaker 1: was gonna master.
- 13:19Speaker 5: Yell after the San Francis was that the preseason sand franch.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Dreda Well, they.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I'm not sure they had all of the information when
- 13:29Speaker 2: they booked their hotel because there was like a jazz
- 13:33Speaker 2: fest across the street.
- 13:36Speaker 5: He want Kenny g Covers keeping him up the night
- 13:39Speaker 5: for a game.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I'm not sure they were quite prepared for the Broncos
- 13:44Speaker 2: to be in a hotel across the street from jazz FESTU.
- 13:49Speaker 3: So uh.
- 13:50Speaker 2: The list of fourteen things was really a genesis from that.
- 13:55Speaker 1: It was about the woodwind section. He was really mad
- 13:58Speaker 1: about that. Jeff Blake, everybody scatting on your own.
- 14:03Speaker 5: Don't play jazz next to me, and they'll play jazz
- 14:05Speaker 5: on the field.
- 14:07Speaker 3: No clarinets in.
- 14:09Speaker 1: The preseason, jazz in our sports, Jeff Legwald, everybody, ESPN,
- 14:14Speaker 1: We'll be talking to Jeff Fall week long right here
- 14:17Speaker 1: on Else to Do Sports Radio ninety two five. Jeff,
- 14:19Speaker 1: well done, man.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Thank you fellas.
- 14:22Speaker 1: All right, Jeff Lagwald, right on the eve of another
- 14:25Speaker 1: Broncos training camp,
