- 0:02You're listening to the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:06with Dr. Brenna Hicks.
- 0:09Hi,
- 0:10I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:11The Kid Counselor.
- 0:12This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:14where I give you insight,
- 0:15awareness,
- 0:15and enlightenment about your parenting and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:19In today's episode,
- 0:20we are wrapping up
- 0:22the Parent Companion series.
- 0:24We are wrapping up season 3.
- 0:26Thank you for hanging out with me for all of
- 0:28season 3 and for all of the questions that you submitted
- 0:32and for
- 0:33kind of walking the journey of what
- 0:36child-centered play therapy is all about.
- 0:38It has been
- 0:39actually a really long,
- 0:41longer than I expected season,
- 0:42to be honest.
- 0:43And
- 0:44this has been a very meaningful season for me
- 0:47because one of the most important things that I feel
- 0:50we're trying to do as a field,
- 0:52as child-centered play therapists,
- 0:54is find out
- 0:55how we can effectively engage parents in the process.
- 0:59And
- 1:00You all are a crucial piece of your child's healing journeys.
- 1:04You need to be invested and understanding and bought in and committed,
- 1:08whether you're working with a play therapist or not.
- 1:11Every single child is on
- 1:13a self-actualization journey.
- 1:15We're all on self-actualization journeys.
- 1:16It doesn't matter the age.
- 1:18And as your child is working to become a better version of him or herself,
- 1:22and as your child is developing and growing and learning and experiencing life
- 1:27and sorting through things,
- 1:29they need someone to come alongside them.
- 1:31And whether that's a play therapist,
- 1:32whether that's you,
- 1:33whether that's another adult in their life,
- 1:36we are working as a field
- 1:38to make sure that you are equipped
- 1:41and adequately prepared.
- 1:43To understand what's going on,
- 1:45what children need,
- 1:46how to best communicate with them,
- 1:48how to understand where they are and honor that,
- 1:52respect that,
- 1:52sit in it with them.
- 1:54And obviously,
- 1:55sometimes you want support
- 1:57and sometimes you seek a child-centered play therapist.
- 1:59Many of you are working with child-centered play therapists right now,
- 2:02and I commend the fact that you realize that you can't do this alone.
- 2:06For those of you that are not.
- 2:07And your children are stable and or happy and
- 2:10or you feel like you are supporting them effectively,
- 2:13I commend that too,
- 2:14because at the end of the day,
- 2:16Yuri Bronfenbrenner.
- 2:18Quoted one of my favorite quotes of all time,
- 2:21every child needs at least one adult
- 2:24who has an irrational love,
- 2:26a crazy irrational love for them.
- 2:30And
- 2:31if you are that person for your children,
- 2:33if the play therapist with whom you're working is that person for your children,
- 2:37that's how children become the best version of themselves when at least one adult
- 2:41in their world
- 2:42has a crazy irrational love for them.
- 2:45And that's what this season 3 has been about,
- 2:48about helping you understand
- 2:49what
- 2:50the play therapy process looks like,
- 2:52but also what it means when your kid is struggling and how to help.
- 2:55So,
- 2:55I hope that you found value in it.
- 2:57Thank you for the emails and the questions and everything that you've submitted.
- 2:59It's been really rewarding on my end.
- 3:01So,
- 3:02I hope it has been for you all as well.
- 3:04Since we're wrapping up season 3 and Parent Companion series is over,

- 6:05And,
- 6:05you know,
- 6:06all of us are in this together.
- 6:07I was talking about that on a call earlier today.
- 6:11Parents
- 6:12don't want children
- 6:13to
- 6:14be stuck and struggle.
- 6:16The child does not want to be stuck in struggle,
- 6:19and the child-centered play therapist doesn't want
- 6:21the child to be stuck in struggle.
- 6:22We're all on the same team.
- 6:24We all have the same goals.
- 6:26We're all working together toward the same outcomes.
- 6:29And we come alongside each other and we help and we support
- 6:33and we encourage each other.
- 6:34And that's what
- 6:36your relationship with your therapist is.
- 6:38That's what your relationship with me on this podcast is.
- 6:41We're all in this together.
- 6:43And my vision is a world full of happy kids that become happy adults.
- 6:47And I hope that we continue to work toward that goal
- 6:50of happy children who become happy adults
- 6:53because that has lifelong generational impact.
- 6:56And it starts with what we do today.
- 7:00So be encouraged,
- 7:01know that I love you,
- 7:02know that I appreciate you,
