Transcript
- 0:00Today is the 25th of February and currently we are studying
- 0:08the books of the prophets and I've been going in order of all
- 0:11of the prophets and when they when they served and, and just
- 0:16tying it into the different kings.
- 0:19Now there are in my study Bible, they have a bracket that kind of
- 0:23shows the the overlap of certain prophets and who's who served
- 0:281st and who gave their prophecy first and then what kings were
- 0:33in place between Judah and Israel, the two separated
- 0:36kingdoms. And it went through all of that.
- 0:40And there were three prophets that were not included in my
- 0:44study Bible, but I looked at the timing of them and hey, guy,
- 0:50that was written about 5:20 and 5:20 BC.
- 0:57And so I did do an A podcast episode on that.
- 1:01It's episode 656, so it's been quite some time ago.
- 1:07I don't remember why I did it, but I think something else that
- 1:11I was reading referenced that. And then we it was 2 chapters,
- 1:14so it was completed pretty quickly.
- 1:17And then we still have Zechariah to finish and Malachi.
- 1:23Those are two more prophets that we have before we complete all
- 1:27of the prophets. But the reason I am switching
- 1:30over now to the book of Esther, it's somewhat in the same time
- 1:35frame. It's a it's more of a historical
- 1:39account of what happened rather than anything else.
- 1:44And so we're going to read through that book.
- 1:47And this book has 10 chapters. And the reason for this is the
- 1:53timing. We actually have 7 days from
- 1:56today, which is the celebration of Purim this year, 2026.
- 2:04And ironically, this is, there's also going to be a blood moon on
- 2:08that day, which is a lunar, a total lunar eclipse where the
- 2:12moon looks red. And this is the third time a
- 2:17blood moon has been that has happened on the, the holiday or
- 2:25the remembrance of called Purim or Purim.
- 2:30And so this is, it was 2425 and now 26.
- 2:33This is the third time and the date changes on the calendar.
- 2:38So it's, it's interesting, but maybe we'll read in here that it
- 2:42always gets tied to that to a lunar eclipse.
- 2:47But I'm not sure because I haven't, I've read this before,
- 2:49but it's been a while. So I don't recall all the
- 2:52details. But as soon as we get in to it,
- 2:54we're going to go through all the details anyway.
- 2:57The the thought is I might do a few chapters a day for this one
- 3:01because I would ultimately like to complete the Book of Esther
- 3:05on the day of Purim, which is March 3rd this year, 2026.
- 3:11So let's get started. I will read from the Study Bible
- 3:16because it has a great introduction that kind of does
- 3:21the place, setting of where and when and how all of this is
- 3:26happening. So the introduction for the book
- 3:28of Esther says why read this book?
- 3:31Have you ever wondered if God is really involved in the
- 3:34circumstances of your life? Do personal or political crisis
- 3:39make you question God's role in human events?
- 3:43The book of Esther, much like much of the Bible, tells the
- 3:47story of God's involvement with his people.
- 3:50Unlike the rest of the Bible, however, this book shows God's
- 3:55work indirectly. In fact, God's name is not
- 4:00mentioned once, nor is there any explicit reference to God,
- 4:06though his influence permeates the narrative.
- 4:10The book demonstrates how God worked in the lives of His
- 4:13people, and it will encourage you to trust Him to work in your
- 4:18life today. Who wrote the book?
- 4:21The author is unknown, but it is clear from the book's tone and
- 4:25details that the author was a devout Jew.
- 4:28Possibly Mordecai, Ezra, or Nehemiah wrote it.
- 4:34Why was it written? It was written as a history of
- 4:37the events leading to the establishment of the Jewish
- 4:42observance of Purim, and that's found in Chapter 9, verses 24
- 4:47through 32, and as a way to assure God's people, especially
- 4:53the Jews, of His protection. When and where was it written?
- 4:59In Persia between 460 and 350 BC.
- 5:05Esther became queen in 479 BC. Now for those who have studied
- 5:11Bible prophecy, we know that Persia is modern day Iran and
- 5:17this date February 25th 2026 is a pretty tense moment right now
- 5:24in Iran. We don't know what's going to
- 5:27happen. There are I many ships that are
- 5:31over in Iran and Iran current leadership, I mean, they are
- 5:38having civil unrest. They have people who are
- 5:41rejecting the current leadership because of the harsh laws and
- 5:45killings that they've done. I've heard numbers like up to
- 5:4932,000 people, civilians in Iran have been killed by their own
- 5:55ruling authority. We don't know what's going to
- 5:59come of this, but the timing of this is very interesting
- 6:05relating to the biblical observance of the I don't know
- 6:10whether to call it a holiday or a day or a commemoration of
- 6:14forum. So anyway, this is very timely
- 6:18with what's happening in the world.
- 6:20And when I read it the last time, I did notice some things
- 6:25that I thought symbolically again pointed to Jesus.
- 6:29Even though God is not mentioned, there are some things
- 6:32that are very symbolic of Jesus. And what I found in Scripture is
- 6:38that often literal events point they, they, I mean, they are
- 6:46literal events that happen, but there is a symbolism in it that
- 6:50relates to God. And, and so it's, it's both a
- 6:54literal event and then it's also symbolic.
- 6:57And that's what I found in this book as well.
- 7:00And of course, Iran's leadership, their current
- 7:04leadership, they are Shiite Muslims and they hate Israel and
- 7:13even more so hate the United States.
- 7:17They proclaim death to America and they are behind.
- 7:24They are actually funding 3 different entities, Hezbollah,
- 7:29the Houthis, and there's a third one too, Hamas, I guess the
- 7:35third one, they, they fund all of them.
- 7:38And their ultimate goal is to wipe out the Jews, wipe out
- 7:44Israel. And so they are behind all of
- 7:47this. They are funding these entities,
- 7:50these military entry entities that are scattered around in
- 7:55different places in the Middle East.
- 7:57So this is a very interesting time period and and biblically
- 8:03there could be some some things that unfold here.
- 8:08I mean, maybe this what we're going to read is going to show
- 8:11us something about the future as well.
- 8:14I wouldn't necessarily call the book of Esther prophetic in any
- 8:17way, but you'll see when we read it.
- 8:21So what to look for? Look for revelations of God's
- 8:24character, his faithfulness, and how he provides for those who
- 8:29trust in Him, even through events you might view as tragic.
- 8:35Notice the indirect allusions to God's involvement in the lives
- 8:39of his people. All right, chapter 1 Queen
- 8:42Vashti is deposed. This is what happened during the
- 8:47time of Xerxes, the Xerxes who ruled over 127 provinces
- 8:54stretching from India to Kush. That's part of Egypt area.
- 9:02And then so I'm going to read this like who was Xerxes?
- 9:04Because that's important because there are so many different
- 9:07names and it gets confusing when different versions of names.
- 9:12And the study Bible explains this really well.
- 9:15Xerxes is Greek for Assurius who which is Hebrew for his Persian
- 9:23name which is Kesharasha. I'm probably not pronouncing any
- 9:29of them correctly, but we just see that there are three
- 9:32different names that all mean the same thing in different
- 9:35languages. So if you know the actual
- 9:40historical name then you will know this is what it's referring
- 9:44to. So Xerxes ruled the Persian
- 9:47Empire or the Iranian? You know modern day Iran from
- 9:51486 to 465 BC. This vast realm was the dominant
- 9:58military and economic power of its time.
- 10:02Xerxes was the son and successor of Darius One the Great, the
- 10:08first the Great, whose reign saw the restoration of the Jerusalem
- 10:13Temple in 516, and you can read about that in the book of Ezra,
- 10:18chapters 5 and 6. So Darius is the one and he was
- 10:23from modern day Iran that I, I guess I, it was like Cyrus too
- 10:29was involved in there. Cyrus is another figure who
- 10:33helped to rebuild the temple. So that's another interesting
- 10:39point because we all know are many of us probably know that
- 10:44the Temple Institute has architectural plans and all of
- 10:49the articles that would go into a temple, they're ready to go
- 10:56and and there's like signage. There's all this preparation in
- 11:01Jerusalem for 1/3 Temple. I think there's signage.
- 11:06There's like a railway that they're trying to complete so
- 11:08that people can circumvent traffic and be able to get to
- 11:13the temple. They are thinking this is going
- 11:17to be that temple for all nations.
- 11:20There's a lot that is of a part of this.
- 11:24So again, this might be significant in learning from
- 11:31history and I, I've always said, and we've always, we've all
- 11:34heard it. History repeats itself.
- 11:37And I heard recently, and I can't recall like who it was.
- 11:42It was on a podcast. But then he said, I can't take
- 11:44credit for it. It was actually someone else who
- 11:46said, I don't know if it was Mark Twain who said it before
- 11:49him, but history doesn't repeat itself.
- 11:53But it it does give a reflection.
- 11:58I don't think that was the right word that they even said, but it
- 12:01was. It's very similar.
- 12:04It gives a pattern. History gives us a pattern of
- 12:07things. It's act.
- 12:08It's not an exact replication of it, but it is a pattern.
- 12:15There are patterns that are seen in history and we certainly see
- 12:19that when we read the Bible, the patterns between God and Israel
- 12:22and what happens. So talking a lot, I'm going to
- 12:26get back to the Scripture. At that time, King Xerxes
- 12:30reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa, and in the
- 12:36third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his nobles and
- 12:41officials, the military leaders of Persia and media.
- 12:45Both of those areas represent modern day Iran.
- 12:48Just for placement, the Princess and the nobles of the provinces
- 12:53were for a full 180 days. For six months OK, He displayed
- 13:01the vast wealth of his Kingdom and splendor and glory of His
- 13:05Majesty. When these days were over, the
- 13:10king gave a banquet lasting 7 days in the enclosed garden of
- 13:16the King's palace for all the people from the least to the
- 13:20greatest who were in the citadel of Susa.
- 13:24Now right here I'm seeing symbolism of Christ.
- 13:29So from the least to the greatest, the Kingdom of God is
- 13:33going to have the least and the greatest.
- 13:37It's not a matter of your ranking within the world
- 13:41according to world values, but it will have those very humble
- 13:45and it will have some, you know, more prominent people who are,
- 13:50who have humbled themselves and are focused on God.
- 13:55But we're going to see in God's Kingdom there's going to be a
- 13:58wide range of people. It's not just going to be those
- 14:02successful people of the world that are there.
- 14:04In fact, probably many of the people, the successful people of
- 14:08the world who didn't ever turn to God won't be present in God's
- 14:12Kingdom. So we're going to see something
- 14:15completely different. And again, this doesn't relate
- 14:19to Jesus, but I do see that this is there's something here that
- 14:24is very symbolic. And there's also the the wedding
- 14:28supper of the lamb. And it says like, blessed are
- 14:31those who are invited or who are invited or chosen to, you know,
- 14:36to attend the wedding and the wedding supper of the lamb.
- 14:40And it sounds like that's in the Book of Revelation.
- 14:43And it sounds like there's kind of two parallel wedding suppers.
- 14:49There is a protection or there's a place where God has his people
- 14:57where they they are gathered. But there is also like a worldly
- 15:01the great supper that's referred to in the Book of Revelation,
- 15:04which is the wrath of God. And at that point the angels are
- 15:08calling on all the birds in the air to eat the kings that have
- 15:14fallen and all kinds of people from the least to the greatest,
- 15:18who have been who, who've received justice from the Lord
- 15:23quite honestly. And the birds will, you know,
- 15:27devour them afterwards. So there's a a beautiful picture
- 15:31of a wedding supper. And then there's also this other
- 15:33supper that's not beautiful and we're going to be in one of
- 15:39those events. We're going to be either at the
- 15:41wedding supper with the lamb or we're going to be being devoured
- 15:46by the birds of the air because we never reconciled with God.
- 15:51So like I said, this is. And then the lasting 7 days is
- 15:55really interesting. I'm sure that has to do with
- 15:57tradition and culture where it would last that long.
- 16:04But it, you know, this is interesting.
- 16:05I don't know if this is, I don't know if this is actually
- 16:07prophetic or not. I never thought of it.
- 16:10And the book isn't titled as a prophet or anything.
- 16:12But there was this six months. He displayed his vast wealth of
- 16:17the Kingdom and the splendor and the glory.
- 16:19I don't know if that's going to be significant in the future or
- 16:22not. I shouldn't read into the the
- 16:24Bible. But then when I see this, the
- 16:26king gave a banquet lasting 7 days in the enclosed garden of
- 16:31the King's palace. So that's like some private
- 16:33place. Like is God going to take his
- 16:36people? We've heard of the the, the week
- 16:42of I guess tribulation and wrath that comes.
- 16:45And according to the book of Daniel, and so does God shelter
- 16:51his people, those who are reconciled with him during seven
- 16:56years? There's some debate on whether
- 16:57it's actually 3 1/2 years or if it's a full 7 years.
- 17:02And I'm not certain where there's there's a lot of
- 17:06discussion and I'm not going to get into that.
- 17:08But anyway, there is a final seven years period that Daniel
- 17:16the prophet refers to, and so does God gather his people
- 17:22before this, this last week of years and shelter them while the
- 17:29rest of the world who is not reconciled with God suffers the
- 17:33wrath. Just something to think about.
- 17:37OK, so the garden had hangings of a white and blue linen
- 17:43fastened with cords of white linen and purple material to
- 17:49silver rings on marble pillars. They there were couches of gold
- 17:54and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyr.
- 17:59I don't know marble, mother of Pearl and other costly stones.
- 18:05We do know that there's going to be this in the new heaven and
- 18:08the new earth that comes down from above.
- 18:11There are going to be these like semi precious stones and they're
- 18:14it's described as a giant Pearl is going to be a gate it.
- 18:23I don't know if it's to be taken literal or if it's just those
- 18:28are the best words to describe what these prophets saw, the
- 18:35visions that people had. Both Ezekiel and John, you know,
- 18:42had visions of this. So wine was served in goblets of
- 18:47gold. Each one was different from the
- 18:49other, and the royal wine was abundant in keeping with the
- 18:53King's liberalty. By the King's command, each
- 18:57guest was allowed to drink with no restrictions, for the king
- 19:03instructed all the wine Stewarts to serve each man what he
- 19:06wished. Now that's not the same as what
- 19:10Jesus would say, or it doesn't align with the Bible drinking.
- 19:15Of course, Jesus, you know, multiplied wine in his first
- 19:21miracle that he did in the, IT was at a wedding and the wedding
- 19:27in Cana. And so from Scripture and plus
- 19:31he drank wine. That was the drink that people
- 19:33had at that time culturally, as I understand it.
- 19:36So he drank wine during, you know, with his disciples.
- 19:41And there isn't anything in Scripture that I've seen that
- 19:45says that alcohol is forbidden or wine is forbidden.
- 19:50It doesn't say that. In fact, I think in one of
- 19:53Paul's letters to Timothy or vice versa, they're talking
- 19:57about have a little bit of wine to settle your stomach or
- 20:00something, you know, to that effect.
- 20:02So wine in moderation is seems to be OK within the Bible, but
- 20:11anyone who drinks outside of moderation is.
- 20:16Not OK in the Bible. It in fact, these were things
- 20:20that I read the first time I read the Bible that stood out to
- 20:23me that really concerned me because it says no drunkard will
- 20:28inherit the Kingdom of God. So that's like a there's a lot
- 20:32of people that go out and get drunk and our world celebrates
- 20:36that and a lot of things that we go to socially and encourage
- 20:42that. And so this is something that if
- 20:47we don't read the Bible and see how strong it is talked about in
- 20:52the Bible, that a person who continues in that path is not
- 20:58going to inherit the Kingdom of God.
- 21:01It's just something that the Bible convicts us.
- 21:04That's the purpose of it. It is the living word of God.
- 21:07It teaches us, it rebukes us, but the whole purpose of it is
- 21:12so that we can come to repentance and so that our
- 21:16relationship can be made right with God once again.
- 21:20So this is not to the only purpose is to restore us and to
- 21:26make us aware that if we if we continue to be a drunkard, then
- 21:33we we haven't repented. So we can't enter the Kingdom of
- 21:38God like that. Now, a lot of people that you
- 21:41know that there's an addiction and there's a whole nother
- 21:45subject about that. But if we turn to God, God can
- 21:50heal. So the key to that is
- 21:53repentance. The key to that is asking Jesus
- 21:57for the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit is who gives us
- 22:02self-control. That's a gift of the Holy
- 22:05Spirit. It's fruit of the Holy Spirit.
- 22:07If you have the fruit of the Holy Spirit, you will have
- 22:09self-control. Well, what does an addict not
- 22:12have? self-control?
- 22:14So that means that an addict does not have the Holy Spirit,
- 22:19but if you turn to God, you will receive the Holy Spirit and then
- 22:24you will be able to have power from God to overcome this.
- 22:30And people, Christians today don't seem to be living with the
- 22:36power and the authority that is promised to us in the Bible.
- 22:40And I feel very convicted about saying that to people these days
- 22:43because there is so much power that you learn about in the
- 22:47Bible. And it's not to be used for
- 22:49worldly reasons, but for the good of all other people and to
- 22:54serve other people. But God gave us the information
- 22:58here in the Bible. That's why the Bible is so
- 23:00critical. OK, let's go back to the
- 23:02Scripture, verse 9. Queen Vashti also gave a
- 23:06banquet, banquet for the women in the royal palace of King
- 23:10Xerxes on the 7th day when King Xerxes was in high spirits from
- 23:17wine. So he's drunk, right?
- 23:20He commanded the seven eunuchs who served him.
- 23:24Now these eunuchs are males who have been castrated and they are
- 23:30they oversee some of the women, but obviously they can't do
- 23:33anything with them. So when or he commanded the
- 23:37seven eunuchs who served him. And it gives their names, which
- 23:40I probably will not be able to pronounce correctly.
- 23:43The human biztha harbona, bigtha AB bactha zethar and carcass to
- 23:53bring before him Queen Vashti wearing her crown in order to
- 24:01display her beauty to the people and nobles for she was lovely to
- 24:06look at. So you know it's like it says in
- 24:13the Bible in scripture it says be alert and of sober mind
- 24:16because the devil pouts looking for his next victim.
- 24:21Do you think a man would do that with his wife if he wasn't under
- 24:26the influence? I mean, if he had the Holy
- 24:28Spirit, he wouldn't because he wouldn't want other men to be
- 24:32looking at his wife naked with a crown on.
- 24:35But this is a little bit different.
- 24:37He's drunk. And how many times do people get
- 24:39drunk and then say, oh, I wouldn't have done that if I
- 24:42hadn't been drunk? Like, that's not me.
- 24:45You wonder why there's a spiritual influence behind that.
- 24:49OK, so let's see. But when the attendants
- 24:54delivered the King's command, Queen Vashti refused to come.
- 24:59Then then the king became furious and burned with anger.
- 25:05That's another says something about not going to bed in anger.
- 25:13And it also says before you make any sacrifices to God, if there
- 25:17is a dispute between you and another, go and solve that
- 25:21first. And anger is the foothold of the
- 25:27devil. That's what it says in
- 25:28Scripture. So we're seeing a lot of fruit
- 25:32of an unholy spirit coming out. First of all, he's getting
- 25:35drunk. Then he is, you know, presenting
- 25:40his wife to others with lust, which is another sin.
- 25:44And then he's burning with anger on top of that.
- 25:48So all of these things are manipulative.
- 25:51I mean, drinking wine, you know, people feel good when they start
- 25:55drinking wine. There is nothing bad about a
- 25:59naked person who is your spouse. There's nothing bad about that.
- 26:03That's a good thing. God made us that way and it's
- 26:08supposed to be that way, but not for everyone else.
- 26:12And then to become furious and burn with anger.
- 26:16It says that believers should never in in the book of
- 26:20Proverbs. It says something about don't,
- 26:26don't be associated with a hot temper person or there's more to
- 26:32it than that, but it's in the book of Proverbs and but it
- 26:35basically you become like them if you associate with them.
- 26:39So there's lots of warnings like helpful advice in the Bible that
- 26:44can almost be used as counseling.
- 26:46If we read the Bible, if we just close, get close to God, he will
- 26:49explain stuff to us and it's the everyday things of life that
- 26:53will become clear. So verse 13, since it was
- 26:57customary for the king to consult experts in matters of
- 27:01law and justice, he spoke with the wise men who understood the
- 27:05times and were closest to the king.
- 27:08Kharshena, Sithar, Edmatha, Tarshish, Mears, Marcena, and
- 27:16Memukan, the seven nobles of Persia and media who had special
- 27:22access to the king and were the highest in the Kingdom.
- 27:27So now he's probably in his drunken state, he's angry that
- 27:31his wife is not listening to him.
- 27:35And so he's calling on other men who are, you know, highest in
- 27:39the Kingdom. Well, if they were highest in
- 27:41the Kingdom, they're probably at his party.
- 27:43They're probably also drunk. So here's where you're getting
- 27:47like in you're getting insight or counselling from a bunch of
- 27:51drunken people. Do you think that's going to go
- 27:53well? OK, verse 15, according to the
- 27:57law, what must be done to Queen Vashti?
- 28:00He asked. She has not obeyed the command
- 28:03of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her.
- 28:06Then Mamukhan replied the In the presence of the king and the
- 28:11nobles, Queen Vashti has done wrong, not only against the
- 28:16king, but also against all the nobles and the peoples of the
- 28:21provinces of King Xerxes. For the Queen's conduct will
- 28:26become known to all the women, and so they will despise their
- 28:31husbands and say King Zergski's commanded Queen Vashti to be
- 28:37brought reformed, but she would not come.
- 28:40Actually, you know, this is really interesting because this
- 28:42is almost what's happening in Iran right now.
- 28:45The women are kind of revolting against being told how they need
- 28:53to dress and these other restrictions that are on them.
- 28:58And there were, you know, I mean, the there is no freedom of
- 29:02speech. There have been men like
- 29:05Olympians who have been hanged or executed because of their
- 29:09rebellion against the authorities who are in control
- 29:13right now. And so this is this is very
- 29:16relevant to us right now. I mean, this King Xerxes, all of
- 29:20these nobles, all the people that are in leadership positions
- 29:23are saying, wait, we can't let this woman say no.
- 29:26If she does that, she's going to get all the other women on
- 29:29board. That's kind of what's happening
- 29:31right now in Iran. This very day, the Persian and
- 29:36Median women of the nobility who have heard about the Queen's
- 29:39conduct will respond to all the King's nobles in the same way.
- 29:44There will be no end of disrespect and discord.
- 29:50Therefore, if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal
- 29:54decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and media
- 30:00which cannot be repealed. So this is this is like warning
- 30:05right here. There's a bunch of drunk people
- 30:08making some rules that cannot be repealed.
- 30:12I've seen this before. The same thing that happened
- 30:15with Daniel when he got thrown into the den with the lions.
- 30:20The Babylonian king had written something and that couldn't be
- 30:25repealed. And when David was seen
- 30:27worshipping the one true God, he was then because he wasn't
- 30:32worshipping the king, he was then thrown into the den with
- 30:36the lions. So this is a, you know, a
- 30:40repetitious of something, you know, things get repeated so
- 30:45which cannot be repealed. That Vashti is never again to
- 30:50enter the presence of King Xerxes.
- 30:53So that's I guess not as severe. Like she just can't come in
- 30:57front of him again because of this.
- 31:00Also, let the king give her royal position to someone who is
- 31:05better than she, so now they're going to replace her with
- 31:08somebody else. Then the King's edict.
- 31:12Then when the King's edict is proclaimed throughout all his
- 31:16vast realm, all the women will respect their husbands from the
- 31:22least to the greatest. So these nobles were fearful
- 31:26that, hey, our wives are going to do this.
- 31:28If the King's wife does this and she gets away with it, all of
- 31:31our wives are going to do this first. 21 The king and his
- 31:37nobles were pleased with this advice.
- 31:39So the king did as Mamukan proposed.
- 31:43He sent dispatches to all parts of the Kingdom, to each province
- 31:48in his own script, and to each people in their own language,
- 31:52proclaiming that every man should be ruler over his own
- 31:57household using his native tongue.
- 32:01Now, this part doesn't necessarily disagree with the
- 32:04Bible. God himself has a a, a role or
- 32:11an order of things. So Jesus is above all.
- 32:16But then in a marriage, both the husband and the wife submit to
- 32:21Christ and they also submit to one another.
- 32:26And it's kind of neat in the Bible how it says like a three
- 32:29strand cord is hard to be broken.
- 32:33So if you have a three strand cord, Jesus, husband, wife,
- 32:39that's going to be hard to break.
- 32:41When both the husband and the wife are submitted to Christ, he
- 32:45is the head and then they also submit to one another.
- 32:50That's a very much of a servant type attitude towards one
- 32:55another. Like the wife will will respect
- 32:57her husband and the husband will do all he can for his wife.
- 33:02And so it's a, it's a mutual agreement and it's something
- 33:05beautiful that God put together. So the, the part about
- 33:09respecting your husband is true. They're just going about it in a
- 33:13bad way because it was something unholy, ungodly that they were
- 33:19wanting that the king was wanting his wife to do and she
- 33:22was saying no, I'm not going to do that.
- 33:25And so under God's law, God probably would not want her to
- 33:30do that either. But also, you know, there is an
- 33:34order, but if something contradicts God, you would stand
- 33:38up for it. So anyway, that is the end of
- 33:42chapter 1 and I'm going to read the study Bibles questions and
- 33:46answers for this chapter. So where was Susa?
- 33:50The mounds of ruins that were once the city of Susa are
- 33:54located about 150 miles north of the Persian Gulf in the present
- 33:59day province of Kuzitan in southwestern Iran.
- 34:05What kind of quote display would have gone on for six months?
- 34:09Xerxes lavish and prolonged banqueting sets the stage for
- 34:13the Book of Esther. Xerxes immediate purpose was
- 34:16probably to rally military leaders under his authority and
- 34:20win their loyalty for a future battle with the Greeks.
- 34:24This over the top feasting establishes that Xerxes was a
- 34:28man of unparalleled wealth and power, a force to be reckoned
- 34:33with. He was a man who did whatever he
- 34:35pleased. The odds were hopelessly stacked
- 34:38against God's people. What did it mean to drink with
- 34:43no restrictions? According to Persian law, guest
- 34:46at the King's table could drink only when he drank.
- 34:50Xerxes set aside that law, giving permission for his guest
- 34:54to drink as much as they liked. This indicates both extravagance
- 34:59and the revelry of Xerxes banquet.
- 35:04Should a wife submit to her husband, even if disobedient, or
- 35:08even if obedience means violating her conscience?
- 35:13Queen Vashti did the unthinkable.
- 35:16She refused a direct order from the king of Persia.
- 35:19Scripture gives no reason for Vashti's refusal to heed the
- 35:24King's summons. Most scholars speculate that she
- 35:27did not want to betray her dignity before the King's
- 35:31drunken guest. A few have suggested that there
- 35:34was a political motive behind her defiance.
- 35:38In any case, her disobedience posed a threat to the King's
- 35:42authority that, in the minds of the King's advisers, open the
- 35:45door to quote disrespect and discord.
- 35:50A Christian marriage of today is very different from the
- 35:53relationship between a king and a queen in ancient Persia.
- 35:57All believers are commanded to submit to one another out of
- 36:00reverence for Christ. In a family, the wife is to
- 36:04submit to her husband, and the husband is to love his wife.
- 36:09Husband and wife together are to submit to Christ who instructs
- 36:13their conscience and guides their understanding in all
- 36:17things. The husband and wife should seek
- 36:21to honor Christ. This applies in decision making
- 36:25as each spouse works hard to avoid violating the other person
- 36:30person's conscience and seeks the good of the other person.
- 36:35Spouses should never entice one another to do wrong, but if that
- 36:40should happen, each one's first obligation is to obey Christ.
- 36:48Why was there a separate banquet for women?
- 36:51Such segregation was probably not the norm in Persia.
- 36:54Perhaps the atmosphere the King's banquet, which involved
- 36:58serious drinking, was deemed too vulgar for the presence of noble
- 37:02women. In any case, this verse makes it
- 37:05clear that Vashti was not at Xerxes banquet, which sets the
- 37:09stage for his summons and her subsequent refusal.
- 37:15Had the King's top aides been castrated, it is not clear.
- 37:19The Hebrew word translated here as eunuch can mean an officer, a
- 37:24castrated male, or both. Since these men had access to
- 37:29the King's harem, they may have been castrated to protect the
- 37:34King's interest, but the title may also reflect their close
- 37:39relationship to the king. Why did Queen Vashti refuse the
- 37:44King's summons? Considering the importance of
- 37:46the occasion in her position, she may have had a political
- 37:50motive, or she may have anticipated an unpleasant and
- 37:54awkward situation. According to Jewish historians,
- 37:57Vashti was to appear wearing only her crown.
- 38:02The prospect of being old by a drunken crowd, regardless of
- 38:07what she was to where, could explain her refusal.
- 38:12So that concludes Chapter 1 and we will end that here.
- 38:19So if you're not subscribed, please subscribe and come back
- 38:23for the next chapters. We're going to try and go
- 38:25through this book relatively quickly because we have 10
- 38:28chapters to complete in seven days.
- 38:31So some of these others may be a little bit shorter, I don't
- 38:35know, or I might do a couple of them in a day.
- 38:37So anyway, I hope if this was beneficial to you, please share
- 38:42it with other people. And if the podcast is
- 38:44beneficial, please share the podcast with other people.
- 38:46I just want the word of God to be to go out to people.
- 38:51It's so important how our relationship and our
- 38:55reconciliation with God that we do reconcile with God and we get
- 39:00close to Him, especially during these days.
- 39:03Thank you.
