- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Let's be honest.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: We writers have a reputation for taking everything personally.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Many of us would describe ourselves as introverted artists who are highly sensitive.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: We tend to absorb other people's emotions and sometimes we have a hard time letting things go.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Am I right?
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Or am I right?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Now that's all well and good, but to be honest with you, it can make it hard to build an audience over the long haul if that's your tendency.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Here's one way to handle this.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: And I know this sounds way easier than it actually is to put into practice, but just hear me out.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: I want to encourage you, and I want to encourage myself as well, and everybody listening to do this, which is don't take anything personally.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Remember that every comment, every review, and everything other people say has more to do with their perspective and emotional state than it has to do with you.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And this is really where your observation skills as a writer can come in handy.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Whenever somebody says something that you don't like or they make a negative or a critical observation, examine it like a doctor examines a patient.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: See if it's true, and then if it is true, then make a correction in your life if you need to.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: But do so without letting it affect your self-worth or your identity.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: In other words, whenever somebody says something critical or they correct you in some way, or they say something you don't like, you just look at it and go, hmm, that's kind of interesting.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: See if there's any truth to it.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And if there is, just make a correction as needed.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Now, again, this all sounds way easier than it actually is.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And the truth is that this is actually really, really hard to do.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: But it's necessary if you're going to keep your sanity and stay emotionally healthy as a writer.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: That much I believe.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself if it's hard or easy for you to not take things personally.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Why do you think that is?
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Good question to ask yourself.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Hey, before I close this episode, I want to give a huge thanks to today's sponsor, which is Plotter.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: You've heard me talk about Plotter before, and I'm really a huge fan of their software because it makes it easy to tell your story.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: The reason why is because Plotter is the number one visual book planning software for writers that helps you plan books in the same way that you think.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Their intuitive visual interface lets plotting be the creative process it was always supposed to be.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And plotter isn't just for fiction writers, it's also a great tool for nonfiction authors, speakers, podcasters, and pretty much anybody creating content to help you organize your material and your story points.
