- 1:53Welcome to the show. Certainly hope you get a chance to enjoy the
- 1:56beautiful weather yesterday. I did not if you were listening to the show,
- 2:00I told you I developed a cold. By the time yesterday rolled around,
- 2:02it progressed to a little bit more than a cold. But I'm not I'm
- 2:07not going to die or anything like that. But it's not easy on someone
- 2:10who literally never gets sick. Probably uneasy on my wife either. And on
- 2:15top of all that, I get hit some time at the time with bouts
- 2:19of siatica, and that kicked in at some point over the last couple of
- 2:23days. So let me just say this, having a cold and siatica at
- 2:25the same time is not fun. But we will continue to plow forward.
- 2:30You got a lot to get to this morning. The top story locally,
- 2:34of course, the scary situation the two places out of Shawnee Park yesterday afternoon,
- 2:38around three o'clock, while a soccer tournament was going on, there were
- 2:39shots fired at the dunbar area. The investigation continues into that no one injured
- 2:45there had been arrest made. Chief Joe Crawford, who's the chief deputy of
- 2:47the Canawa County Sheriff's Association, is going to join us to talk about that.
- 2:52The Department, i should say, is going to join us to talk
- 2:53about that a little bit later on. Plus last week there were announcements made
- 2:59from the Westet into sixth the Schools Activities Commissioned about some major changes going on
- 3:01with high school sports in West Virginia. The Voice of high school Sports,
- 3:06Fred Persinger's going to join us to talk about that a little bit later on
- 3:09as well. I just want to say, real quick though, it was
- 3:13a feather in the cap, shot in the arm, whatever you want to
- 3:15call it, for the Good One administration, Tim Brady and the folks at
- 3:17the CVB and many more who give up countless hours to help out with this
- 3:21bicycle event in Charleston over the last couple of weeks. It was absolutely off
- 3:24the hook. So many people came into town for it. And I'll be
- 3:29interested when I can get may or a good one or chief of staff Sutton
- 3:31or Brady or some of the others on the show helped pull this thing off.
- 3:36To talk about economic impact when that comes out here in a couple of
- 3:38weeks, because that is going to be something I am sure, So we'll
- 3:44get into that maybe here in the next couple of days. I want to
- 3:46bring in those good friend Steve thatwul On Addams from Ogden Newspaper. Steven,
- 3:49good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning Dave, thanks for having
- 3:51me on. Thank you for being here. You and the lovely Jessica live
- 3:54in the heart of all this in Charleston. Was it not electrical the last
- 3:58couple days or what? Oh, it was so much fun and yeah,
- 4:00we got to check out a couple of the races throughout the week, including
- 4:04a Sunday's race. Jessica and her mother went in the Jessica works in the
- 4:08city Manager's office for the City of Charleston, so played a pretty big role
- 4:12in the behind the scenes planning on making this happen. Her and Tina over
- 4:15there. Yeah, definitely an The and the entire city crew need to be
- 4:18applauded. It was just a pretty well oil machine. Uh. And it
- 4:23was cool to cool to see all the bikes bikes, I don't know what
- 4:26else to call them. I know, the cyclists, but yeah, you
- 4:29don't call them bike riders. But it was cool. It was indeed,
- 4:31and again, uh, just this thing was incredible. I mean, the
- 4:36amount of people that came in for and everything too. Excuse me, this
- 4:41is getting this is the worst than I thought it was going to be so
- 4:43we have interim Stephen that kicked off last last night. We were to get
- 4:46that story a little bit later on, but I want to get your take
- 4:48on the results of the election last week. Let's start with the race for
- 4:53the Republicans side of the race for Governor Jim Justice, and actually let's talk
- 5:00but the race between Governor Justice and the Congressman Alex Mouni for Senate not even
- 5:03closed, man, No, not even close. I mean, we've seen
- 5:06the governor do landslide elections now since twenty sixteen. We've seen him beat like
- 5:15Bill Cole, We've seen him beat Whatdy Thrasher, We've seen him beat Ben
- 5:19Selango, and now we've seen him beat Alex Mooney by wide margins. So
- 5:25not a big surprise there. Every poll had him up and so I don't
- 5:30think anyone's walking away from that one truly surprised by the outcome. And now
- 5:33Justice will take on Wheeley mayor Glenn Elliott and the fall. Your thoughts on
- 5:36that. Yeah, I think Glenn Elliott's going to give him a good fight.
- 5:40I think they're going to have a good discussion of the issues. I
- 5:44know that they're kind of pulling some issues from the left a little bit,
- 5:46I think, to try to get some excitement going in to that election,
- 5:51such as reproductive rights. I think that's going to be a big part of
- 5:54both his and Democrat good manatorial candidate Steve Williams campaigns as well, and I
- 6:00think they're both kind of working on that particular issue, So I think they'll
- 6:03have a good discussion of the issues and whatnot. I don't predict elections,
- 6:08but I mean that's I mean, we've seen past outcomes. They may not
- 6:12be indicative of future results, but I mean Jim Justice is going to be
- 6:16hard to beat. Yeah, I mean, it's it's insane how popular that
- 6:20this guy is. And I mean he continues his popularity continues to grow and
- 6:25grow. Riley Moore and Carol Miller both advancing and their races for a governor
- 6:30Attorney General Patrick morris He moves on to take Huntingson, take on Huntingson,
- 6:33mayor Steve Williams of the general after Morrissey out distance former delegate, more capitocre
- 6:39and Secretary of State mcwarner and auto magnate Chris Miller. Yeah, look,
- 6:43I think I think there was a window of opportunity. I think there was
- 6:47a chance for more capital to win over Attorney General Patrick Morrissey, but what
- 6:54that window is I don't know. Maybe if the governor Justice endorsed them two
- 6:57weeks earlier and hit the road with them two weeks, maybe that would have
- 7:00made a difference. We know justice can move numbers we saw with Amendment two
- 7:03in twenty twenty two, so maybe that endorsement came too late for it to
- 7:09make much of a difference. He didn't have the most money against Patrick Morrisey,
- 7:13but he had money, but most of his He didn't put out as
- 7:15many ads as either Morrissey or Chris Miller did, particularly TV, and I
- 7:20don't know if there's a lot of what ifs, and maybe he could have
- 7:24pulled it off. But it's not terribly surprised that Morrissey was able to win
- 7:29that and he won him pretty close to the margin that was in the West
- 7:31Virginia Metro News WV poll from rex Repass pretty close. They called it.
- 7:36Yeah, how do you see the matchup between Williams and Morrissey. I think
- 7:40that one is going to be a closer race just because of I think Steve
- 7:46Williams has a lot of respect Both among Republicans and Democrats. I do think
- 7:51he might see perhaps a contingent of Capitol supporters even throw support that direction.
- 7:58Do serve a Charlotte Pree type thing nineteen ninety six all over again. I
- 8:01don't know if that scenario really works again. But Patrick morris He's going to
- 8:07come into this with a lot of money again. He's going to come into
- 8:09it with his third party groups also spending money. And I think it's not
- 8:13going to be a repea of twenty eighteen with Mansion in the US Center race.
- 8:16I think it's going to be a little That was a close one too,
- 8:20of course, but Manshell pulled it out. I think it's Morrissey's race
- 8:24to lose. Talking to Steven All that Adams from ogged to newspapers here on
- 8:26the Dave alland show a Dave viland showing five to eighty lives brought you apart
- 8:30by your hometown baseball team, the Charlestony Dirty Birds. It seems like the
- 8:33Bird's been on the road forever. They are off the night, finally back
- 8:37in action Gomar Ballpark tomorrow night, as I'll kick off a series against Haggerstown
- 8:39tomorrow night. Is a two dollars Tuesday, presented by Embassy Suites and Breeze
- 8:43Airways. Visit Dirty Birds, Baseball, dot Communist even. I'm not normally
- 8:48one who gets into political rumors, but this one continues to surface. It's
- 8:52been around several months now, and now that Morrissey won the race for the
- 8:56Republican nomination, continues to have some some legs there. There's been some discussion
- 9:03that at some point, and hear me out on this, you may have
- 9:05already heard this. We talked about on the air last week. Honey to
- 9:09Mayor Steve Williams decides not to run, and the state Democratic Party then put
- 9:13some a guy named Manchin to run in the fall. A couple of things
- 9:18here. I had a text to the show last week for someone talking about
- 9:20it I've been hearing about. I'm sure you have for months as well.
- 9:22Read the text in the show last week. Immediately got a text from someone
- 9:26who is high up in the food chain and with Democratic Party who said,
- 9:28there's absolutely no truth to that room or whatsoever. Then received a text from
- 9:33someone claiming to be friends with Joe Manchin who said, it's absolutely a possibility.
- 9:37I've been told by people close to the Morrissey camp that he is busy
- 9:41preparing for both Williams and mansion. And yesterday I got a call from a
- 9:48good friend in the Huntington area who's very close to Mayor Williams, and he
- 9:50said it's absolutely, one hundred percent not true these rumors, and he had
- 9:54just talked to Mayor Williams about it earlier in the day. I think,
- 9:58what the where this guy started as Mayor Williams and you're a campaign finance guy.
- 10:03Mayor Williams did not raise a whole lot of money, correct, And
- 10:05I would think that would be the time, even say, well, he
- 10:09didn't have an opponent. I would think that would be the time, though,
- 10:11to be raising money, because if you're a Democrat or maybe you're trying
- 10:16to sway the independent voters. You look at how nasty that Republican race was,
- 10:20and you know with all the the outlandish you know TV ads, and
- 10:24you say, look, is this do you want one of these people to
- 10:26be the next guynor what are you hearing about that? Well, that's a
- 10:28good point about the fundraising, because I've raised that point too. I don't
- 10:33quite understand why Steve Williams didn't use the downtime to raise more money. I
- 10:39know he has said that he's got support among mayors across the country that he
- 10:43can tap into. He does have, and his family does have a little
- 10:48bit of independent wealth. I mean, he's got a brother that's a pretty
- 10:50successful attorney that they can tap into. So maybe they'll tap into some of
- 10:54that, like further down the road. I kind of got into it yesterday
- 10:58on x normally known as Twitter, with Andy Nicely, the publisher of the
- 11:03Clarksburg Xponent Telegram, who's a friend and full disclosure, we have a content
- 11:07sharing agreement so they run my stories. But he was pushing that same rumor
- 11:11too. I don't really see it. I've talked to the same probably the
- 11:16same higher ups in the State Democratic Party you have who say it's absolutely not
- 11:20true. It's a rumor. I've been told that behind the scenes, Mansion
- 11:24supports Steve Williams. I'd much rather I would much believe or believe the possibility
- 11:33of a Charlotte Pritt type thing where maybe some Republicans get behind Steve Williams.
- 11:37But I don't see a situation, especially do you. You know the leaders
- 11:41in the State Republican Party, just as I do they spent like last year
- 11:46on a retired Joe Mansion campaign. Do you think that they would get behind
- 11:52like they would be having discussions behind the scenes the have Joe Mansion up there
- 11:56against Patrick Morrisey. That's not gonna happen. Maybe some cap people might be
- 12:01pushing that, but I just don't see that scenario being realistic. Can Stephen
- 12:05can the Republicans united again? I mean, last week Shelley Moore Capito and
- 12:07some remarks said the GOP is her party and she's the head of the family,
- 12:11which I'm sure didn't set well with Patrick Morrissey or maybe not with the
- 12:13higher ups in the State Republican Party. I mean, can they come together?
- 12:18I think it was a nasty campaign. It was a very nasty campaign,
- 12:22and I know that there's going to probably be some work by some behind
- 12:24the scenes maybe to throw a wrench in that process. I mean, you've
- 12:28known Patrick Morrissey for a long time as f I I've covered him, I've
- 12:33talked to him personally. He's a hard charging guy. I kind of call
- 12:35in my call him today. I call him the cool way Man. He
- 12:37just busts through the wall. He's a hard charging guy. And he campaigns
- 12:41hard and he plays the win. That's just how he is. I think
- 12:46there are some hurt feelings, but I think ultimately everyone gets behind him,
- 12:50and I think some of the statements even by some of the candidates, including
- 12:52the mc warner, seemed to be kind of conciliatory. We got to get
- 12:56behind the person that's in charge now, and I think that's going to be
- 12:58Pastrick Morrissey. And yeah, I think it happens, but they're Yeah,
- 13:03of course there's hurt feelings. There always are after an election state wide.
- 13:07Racist Chris Warner went the nomination for Secretary of State seemingly taken over for his
- 13:11brother Max, since no one filed a run on the Democratic side. J
- 13:13B. McCuskey easily beats Mike Stewart for Attorney General, Larry Pack was unopposed
- 13:18for State Treasurer, can't lee and Hart has re elected as a commissioner,
- 13:22and the nomination on the Republican side for state Auditor goes to Mark Hunt.
- 13:26Quick correction, Thornton Cooper is the Democratic candidate for Secretary. I stand corrected,
- 13:31Sorry, mister Cooper, I completely as soon as I said that out
- 13:33of my mouth, I was like waiting Middy, that's not right, but
- 13:35go ahead. Yeah, I think they have a full ticket. Not too
- 13:39many surprises there. I mean I figured JB just based on money, based
- 13:43on the fact that he's been a very popular candidate on statewide ballot twice.
- 13:46I kind of figure he had it. Mike Stewart, Yes, US attorney
- 13:50appointed by Trump, but it is really more known in the southern half of
- 13:52the state. So I figured JB would be okay. Not. I am
- 13:56a little surprised in Secretary of State just because of how much money. Doug
- 13:58scaffs be right, But I'm also not surprised because the Warner name goes pretty
- 14:03far with elections now uh and Chris Warner, course former state party chair at
- 14:07one point, has a lot of connections in the party, still does,
- 14:09and it's been a pretty successful DA director. It's not terribly surprising it would
- 14:16go that route. Kent Lee and Hart, no doubt not surprised by that.
- 14:18And he's been successful and this is supposed to be his final term,
- 14:24so we will see about that. Larry Packuin opposed, not no surprise,
- 14:26not too many surprises there, and even with ica Intermediate Court of Appeals,
- 14:33I think a lot of people thought Ryan White would pull that one out just
- 14:35because he has more money and more connections. So not too many big surprises,
- 14:39and now we search for a new Senate president. That was the biggest
- 14:43surprise of the election. I think to the point that I think even Tom
- 14:50willis the person that won that race, so when I know personally, I
- 14:54think he was even surprised that he won, especially by that margin. Well
- 14:58of those things where I think it's a combination of I think obviously statewide turnout
- 15:03was low, but I think turnout in the Eastern Panhandle was particularly low.
- 15:05So that's going to bring out people they're kind of more red blooded Republican against
- 15:09the establishment. Blair's probably seen as part of the establishment now, especially since
- 15:15he kind of is a full time Senate president. Didn't spend a whole lot
- 15:18of time in the district the last fear, and that's what they said,
- 15:20what I'm on I'm hearing, that's what they ran on up there was that
- 15:24that they didn't they just didn't see him right or wrong. That's what they
- 15:26said. That that's it, and I think that that hurt him ultimately.
- 15:28It's one of those things like the Republicans have tried to turn Senate president into
- 15:33kind of a full time job. It didn't used to be treated that way
- 15:35by Democratic Senate presidents. And perhaps in the future, maybe they'll spend a
- 15:41little less time in Charleston and more time in their district. You can do
- 15:45both well, Yeah, And I always harken back to Earl Ray, Tomlin
- 15:48down for my neck of the woods. Earl Ray was pretty much a full
- 15:52time Senate president. But he only left forty five minutes y you know,
- 15:56so at the end of the night he drove back to Chapmanville. And I
- 15:58was always told when he was governor too sure he lived in the mansion,
- 16:00and like our current governor, but every weekend he'd head back home to chaman
- 16:06Hill, so he spent time in his community. Every weekend he was tended
- 16:10to his garden and riding his four wheeler. That's that's what I already did.
- 16:11Some names I'm hearing out there, Senator Tom Tokubo, Eric tar Mike
- 16:19Olaverio, Jack David Woodrum, Patricia Rucker some of the names I've heard as
- 16:23a possible replacement. What do you hear, I'm hearing a possibility of of
- 16:29course, she got two factions there, and I'm just gonna call him light
- 16:30red and dark red light red faction. I could see Eric Nelson, who
- 16:36just won reelection in his primary pretty easily over Chris Pritt to delegate. I
- 16:41think he's a possibility more for the traditional moderate Chamber of Commerce style conservatives over
- 16:47there, dark red. I see Amy Grady as a possibility for that side
- 16:52of things, very very composerative, especially with her committee makes decisions. I
- 17:00think those are the real possibilities. Tar, I've been told, and you
- 17:03can create. You're a Putnam County guy. I've been told that Tar might
- 17:08be in trouble going into twenty six because he'd put up a candidate against Judge
- 17:14Stowers who lost pretty big. And I was told to watch that one.
- 17:18Yeah, John Hoover, Yeah yeah, stowurs like wins that election. Tar
- 17:22might have some issues in that county. I don't know if that's true.
- 17:25But the thing about Amy Grady is, though, is as you said,
- 17:27it's almost being treated as a full time job. And Amy's a teacher.
- 17:30Yeah, and I don't see her. She's a five day a week teacher,
- 17:33and I don't see her giving that up. I'll be honest with you.
- 17:36I mean, I'm not saying she couldn't do the job, because I
- 17:37think she certainly could. But I don't see her giving that up. No,
- 17:40the possibility is Rucker on that side of things, who did trying to
- 17:44run for Senate president two years ago and back down. So that's even a
- 17:47possibility too. But yeah, a lot of jockeying going on between now and
- 17:52December. Wind Caucus will ultimately meet to make that final decision. All right,
- 17:56So we got interims going on what happened yesterday, what's on the horizon?
- 18:00Sure State Senate passed eight bills or fifteen bills on the special session agenda.
- 18:04The Senate passed eight bills. They did pass a bill restoring funding in
- 18:10a way to Medicaid and the IDD Intellectual Developmental Disability Waiver program. But they
- 18:15did it with some caveats where they got to file some reports. They put
- 18:18that money into a special fund, and every time that they take from that
- 18:22fund, they got to file a report to health officials with the legislature,
- 18:27and if that money is still if there's money left over in that fund by
- 18:30March twenty twenty five, they got to put that money back into General Revenue
- 18:34Fund. So those funds have been restored, but with some oversight over them
- 18:40as well. So we're going to see some continuation. House Finance meets today
- 18:45at ten am to go over some of those bills as part of me as
- 18:48well. So this will stretch out till Tuesday. But I don't think you're
- 18:52going to see too many Shenanigans. This will be a pretty smooth special session.
- 18:57Low on the shenanigans meters that would you're saying, Stephen, Yeah,
- 19:00which means I probably just chined different myself, as is Steve and Al Adams.

- 22:22Chief Deputy of the Kannaw County Sheriff's partment. Joe Crawford coming up a little
- 22:25bit later on to talk about this somewhat scary incident that took place yesterday out
- 22:29at Shawnee, and we're going to get to the latest on that. There
- 22:33has been developments actually within the last thirty minutes or so, and Chief Crawford's
- 22:37can join us to talk about that. As I mentioned earlier, this may
- 22:40have somewhat flown under the radar last week with the election whatnot, but there
- 22:45were some significant rule changes coming to high school sports in West Virginia, and
- 22:48the man who is the best ever to do it in West Virginia as far
- 22:52as high school sports goes, the voice of high school sports in the state,
- 22:55joins us now in the Palm Marstore studio to talk about it. Frederick
- 22:59Persinger, Good morning, David, good morning, Welcome to the show.
- 23:02Always a pleasure, particularly after political talk. It's always fun to slide in.
- 23:08So what's going on here? You know, man, I'm not sure
- 23:11it's significant changes, to be quite honest with you. They're doing away with
- 23:17sections and it's all going to be regions. The one thing that I do
- 23:19like about it, and I really haven't done a deep dive into it only
- 23:23because I'm trying to get ready for the softball tournament this week and the baseball
- 23:27tournament next week. But the one thing I do like it, I've never
- 23:30been a fan of losing in your section and then getting another chance to go
- 23:37to the state tournament. Never be you lose, you lose, You're out.
- 23:41It's a tournament, right and it's not double elimination like softball state tournament
- 23:47that kind of thing. But I'm I'm glad that's gone. So you take
- 23:51the two teams that were in each you had a Section one, Section two
- 23:55in a region. So now you're just going to have one region in there,
- 24:00and you'll still have two particular two in the ending games at the end,
- 24:03and the winner of each game we'll go to the state tournament as opposed
- 24:07to well, I lost in the sectional championship game, but it automatically earned
- 24:12me a right to go to the regionals where if I win, I could
- 24:17go to the state tournament with a loss. I've never agreed with that.
- 24:21I just didn't think that was right. So that's the major change. And
- 24:23as somebody who has worked on a lot of these things behind the scenes of
- 24:27the stations, that I've worked at. It is somewhat difficult to try to
- 24:30keep up with all this when you're from a broadcasting standpoint. When you're back,
- 24:34you know, trying to say, Okay, what games are we going
- 24:37to broadcast? And you're like, well, okay, we got to kind
- 24:38of keep an eye on this game because they have one loss going in.
- 24:41It's it's difficult. It's difficult, and to me, it never really made
- 24:45any sense. It really didn't. So I'm glad that's done. You know,
- 24:48I'm still and I've been on record for a long long time saying I'm
- 24:52not a fan of four classes in West Virginia. I'm just not. I
- 24:55just don't think the state's large enough. And I get it. Every time
- 24:57I say something, they'll say, yeah, but you're giving more teams a
- 25:00chance to get to the state tournament. Okay, but what does that really
- 25:06mean. I mean, anybody that's watched the first games of the first day
- 25:08of the state basketball tournament most of the time it's Yon City. You know,
- 25:14let's be fair, it is and I'm not sure you give me a
- 25:18chance. Wow. I got to the state tournament in Charleston and I got
- 25:21beat by sixty five that's not a memory I want, no, no,
- 25:25I mean to me. So that's why I've never been a fan of it.
- 25:29But still it's here. We got to live with it, and you
- 25:32know it is what it is. So break it down. Give me some
- 25:33examples, because sometimes you hear all this stuff and you hear it on the
- 25:37air, you read about it, and you think, well, give me
- 25:40an example using some Canagh Valley schools about how this will happen with these changes
- 25:44that happened last week. Just let's go. Let's go with in Class quaid
- 25:48A I guess it will be now in Class Quade, for example. Well,
- 25:52it's always been in basketball for the last three years, four years.
- 25:53But in Class Quaida, you had a section that involved Beckley, Greenbrier,
- 26:00East Oakkillan Riverside, and you had another section that involved George Washington, South
- 26:07Charleston Capital. So now you're going to be all together and those teams will
- 26:14be seated by the coaches in that region. As opposed to having two separate
- 26:19tournaments, it's going to be one tournament and it's going to be coming down
- 26:22to where you'll have two final games in that region and the two winners of
- 26:26those games will go on to the state tournament. You can't get into that
- 26:30final game with a loss if you lose it out, And again I like
- 26:33that, So that's a very very It's always been a very very competitive region
- 26:37anyway, with Beckley and g W and South Charleston and those teams fighting against
- 26:42one another. So now you just put them all together and throw them on
- 26:45a hat. What's going to happen. Have you heard them a lot of
- 26:48pushback about this, because I really haven't. You know why we have it
- 26:51yet, because of the fact that, again I thought they were smart when
- 26:55they released it. As you said, it got kind of up under the
- 27:00rug because of the political thing going on with the election, and because of
- 27:03the fact that it's baseball time. It's softball time. They're not even thinking
- 27:07about basketball. You gotta go through football before you get the basketball. So
- 27:12I think that's the only reason. You know, you're not seeing a lot
- 27:15of pushback. Oh my gosh, it's a change, and no one's really
- 27:18delved into the fact that we what's this really mean? And they probably won't
- 27:22until we get into October, maybe September, October November, when we get
- 27:26ready to start basketball. Str to Fred Persinger, again the boye of high
- 27:30school sports here in West Virginia. Phone calls to the Dave Allen schu Or

- 27:37Family Pharmacy were the big story, I guess, Fred in the last couple
- 27:41of years in the world of high school sports was the transfer role and the
- 27:45store the scores that we saw last season, I think one of the I
- 27:49think one of the high school teams just scored another touchdown like twenty minutes ago.
- 27:53Were you disappointed at that? And with the l I'll bring it back
- 27:56to politics for a moment, where were you disappointed at the legs didn't do
- 28:00more with it or do anything with it. I was super disappointed that they
- 28:03got involved it in in the first place. They don't belong there. Are
- 28:06you kidding me? You're telling me, why don't we have a special session?
- 28:08On a special session? On a special session? I mean, we
- 28:11got enough worries in this state, and you guys were just talking about it
- 28:15before I came on with a special session going on now, fought fifteen bills
- 28:19on the agenda for the Senate. They passed eight, but they still had
- 28:23time last time around, or actually time before this, to say, hey,
- 28:27here's what we're going to do in high school sports. Give me a
- 28:30break. I don't think any state senator or any representative was elected to go
- 28:34down and fix or break in this case, in my opinion, high school
- 28:38sports. They should have led it alone. So am I disappointed they didn't
- 28:41even bring it up. Yes, very much, so, very much so.
- 28:45Because it's not a good deal. It really is. And I've talked
- 28:48to a number of athletes that change that went to another school, but now
- 28:52they want to go back to their homeschool. But you can go back,
- 28:56you can't play, you're done, you know. So what did they what
- 29:00did they get out of it? Nothing? Look at George Washington. I
- 29:03think Rick Green, and I won't speak for the guy. I've talked with
- 29:06him. I don't put words in anybody's mouth, but I know Rick Green
- 29:08suffered through one of the toughest seasons he's ever had. Last year had a
- 29:14wonderful team on paper, they never jailed, and they did not make it
- 29:17to the state tournament. And you know, going in said wow, they're
- 29:21the team to beat. Yeah, on paper, but they don't play games
- 29:23on paper though they don't. And again I'm sure if Rick would be honest
- 29:26with you, he'd say it was a tough, tough season for him.
- 29:30So again I'm not a fan of it. I thought they should have left
- 29:33it alone to begin with and then not to do anything with it. I
- 29:37don't think. I don't think you'll see near as many transfers this year as
- 29:40we did going into last year because a lot of them have seen well,
- 29:42maybe the grass really wasn't all that green. On the other side, you
- 29:45know, we'll stay here with my buddies and play and if we get beat,
- 29:48we get beat. But at least you're getting beat with guys. You
- 29:51know. It's another exciting two week period in high school sports tread with the
- 29:55state softball term to get underway later this week. Little Creek Park the boys,
- 29:57I guess next week omar to Ballpark. What are the stories to watch
- 30:02for the girls this week? Well, I think in the girls again,
- 30:03you've got a Cabin Middle and ball Club in Class triple A that is dynamite.
- 30:07They're very very good. You got Saint Mary's ball Club in Class single
- 30:11A. I think would be the certainly the odds on favorite going in and
- 30:14when you look in Class double A, Herbert Hoover Man the Huskies, they
- 30:17have been good for the last several years and they go in with the top
- 30:19record of any team in Class double A. So I think those are the
- 30:22three stories we'll watch and see if somebody like a university A Greenbriar East has
- 30:27never been to the state softball tournament, Bluefield has never been to the state
- 30:32softball tournament. They're there this year and looking for an upset. And of
- 30:36course if you look at Greenbrier East right off the bat, they're going to
- 30:38get a very tough team and university. It's not seeded like it is in
- 30:45basketball. It's Region one plays Region three and Region two plays Region four or
- 30:48whatever the regions are. They rotated every year, so you know going in
- 30:52who you were going to play. So it just happens to be that cabol
- 30:56Midland will not get a university or not get a Greenbrier easton first round,
- 31:00they get a Washington team that is very good in its own right. We'll
- 31:03talk about maybe I'll have you on next week to talk about the boys state
- 31:07baseball tournament. But a look ahead anything that you're wide. I know the
- 31:11field's not set yet, right, So they're just finished their sections and the
- 31:15regions go on this week and the regionals. You know, it's going to
- 31:18be interesting to see some of these teams. I think one of the best
- 31:22regions in the state is going to be Williamstown and Wheeling Central. They've been
- 31:26number one and number two in class singlely all season long, and I think
- 31:30that's going to be a heck of a regional tournament. I'll get y'all next
- 31:32week to talk about that. The good time to remind you though, that
- 31:34if you haven't done so, you need to download the all new Metro News
- 31:37TV app. Definitely, all the games, all the games will be on

- 36:06sixty five points. Did that ever happen or only once? Yes? Back
- 36:09to three classes, says a Texter. It was around three o'clock or so
- 36:15yesterday afternoon, in a beautiful spring day in the Kanaal Valley that the West
- 36:17Virginia Soccer Association's Open Cup was going on at the Shawnee Sports Complex when suddenly
- 36:22shots rang out in an apartment complex and the two hundred block of Smooth Avenue
- 36:27near the complex. Chief Deputy of the Canawa County Sheriff's Barbara Joe Crawford joined
- 36:30us now to discuss it. Chief Crawford, good morning, Welcome to the
- 36:32show. Good morning, Dave, thank you for having me. What happened
- 36:37yesterday? Man, We're still trying to determine what the initial incident was over,
- 36:44but we were able to so far to charge three individuals involved in the
- 36:50incident. Of course, we're still continuing an investigation. But Antonio Jacobs of
- 36:54Saint Albans was arrested. Caden Bowman of Dunbar and Ion Clark of Dunbar were
- 37:01arrested and charged with one engagement in the reverency yesterday's incident. So we're still
- 37:07continuing. Obviously, if there's information, anyone has information, we'll want that
- 37:13information to contact us here at the Sheriff's Office so we can continue to further
- 37:17the investigation. There was you know, it was in close proximity. It's
- 37:22probably two blocks away from the sports complex where they did have ongoing events.
- 37:29You know, we tried to make sure we took care of that situation as
- 37:32well. We had units on the scene fairly quickly during the initial response.
- 37:38So, I mean, there's no reason obviously this was and as you said,
- 37:43Chief, this was close proximity to the Shawnee Sports Complex, but it
- 37:46did not actually happen at the complex. It was like two blocks away,
- 37:50right, Yeah, that's correct. It happened in an apartment complex in the
- 37:52two hundred block of Smith, which is about two blocks from the answers to
- 37:57the soccer complex. And I know that, as you said, sort the
- 38:00investigation is continuing, but we don't have any idea at this point as to
- 38:04exactly what led to this. Yeah, we're still looking into what initiated the
- 38:08incident there. So we got investigators out as we speak, continuing to follow
- 38:14up on that. So hopefully maybe we'll be able to have a better picture,
- 38:17clark picture as to what initiated the incident there at the sports or the
- 38:22housing complex there on Smooth Avenue, Yeah, which again was about two blocks
- 38:27away from them, the sports complex. Talking to Joe Crawford, Chief Deputy
- 38:30for the Kanaw County Sheriff's Department, and there was no I mean, in
- 38:34a situation like this, it's kind of fluid, everything's happening quickly, Chief,
- 38:37But the athletes, the fans, whatever, they were never really in
- 38:43any danger at that point, right, No, but it was you could
- 38:45hear the shots. I saw plenty of Yeah, we have plenty of video
- 38:50to say, which you know, you really don't know where it's coming from
- 38:53or what it's actually taking place. So I mean, we understand that,
- 38:58but look that now this morning, you know, the patrons at the sports
- 39:04complex were not obviously the target or in danger at that point, you know,
- 39:10sitting through all that information. During the initial response, I do want
- 39:14to say this, we had multi agency response. We had state police obviously
- 39:19US the Sheriff's Department, South Charleston Police Apartment, Dunbar Police Department, and
- 39:22Western State University was also notified and they were replaced on lockdown as well.
- 39:28So all the protocols were pretty much engaged. Even though it was a weekend,
- 39:32we were able to get that done. And I saw some of those
- 39:37videos online last night posted by the parents of the kids plane and obviously,
- 39:42as you can imagine, Panny consued many but many, and I don't know
- 39:45whether you can speak to this or not, many seem to be upset that
- 39:47they said that a lot of the gates were locked when they tried to get
- 39:52out. Have you heard anything about that? Yeah, obviously that's something we're
- 39:57going to look at with the staff there, uh to make sure. Obviously,
- 40:01you know, we want to look at everything that that may be a
- 40:06potential concern or an issue. So that's that's something we're looking at as well.
- 40:09All right, well, Joe, I appreciate you being here man,
- 40:13great job is always. Thanks a lot. And we've got three arrests now
- 40:15is that what you said? Three arrests? Yes, three arrests now there,
- 40:19and it is our possibility there could be more coming or potentially or additional
- 40:24charges. Additional charges be additional charges as well. So all right, we're
- 40:28looking at that in contact with the prosecutor's office. All right, Chief Deputy
- 40:32Crawford, I appreciate you being here, man, thanks a lot. Thank
- 40:35you, Dave. Have a good day you as well. Man. I
- 40:37tell you what a scary incident. I mean happened about three o'clock yesterday afternoon,
- 40:40just a beautiful day out of the Shawnee Sports Complex, and all of
- 40:43a sudden, you just hear your gunshots. And at first, I mean
- 40:46I saw that. I wasn't there, of course, but I saw the
- 40:49video like everybody else did online, and you hear those and you think,
- 40:52well, is that gunshots? And then you know, everybody just kind of
- 40:54panics, which is understandable. But I think that this, if it is
- 40:59indeed true, and they're looking at this situation right now, that apparently some
- 41:02of the according to what I read, and I'm not trying to stir problems
- 41:07here, but according to what I read, there were several outlets that seemed
- 41:09to be locked, and there were a lot of parents that were upset about
- 41:15that. So the investigation continues. We've got plenty of information available on it
- 41:21at wv metronews dot com. The news team is working on it, and
- 41:24I think I do believe Dave Wilson is going to be in for Hoppy this

- 46:12of texts to get to here, Texas, Dave, did you see that
- 46:15the West Virginia GOP adopted a brand new, completely rewritten platform at their state
- 46:20meeting this weekend and has liberals going crazy, which makes us very proud of
- 46:24it. I did not read the entire platform. I did see the argument
- 46:30about it on x on, the artist formally known as Twitter. I'll try
- 46:35to maybe get into that last couple of days. I just was scrolling yesterday
- 46:37and I happen to see some arguments going back and forth on their Tony Hodge,
- 46:43who is the vice chair of the state Republican Party, posted some of
- 46:45it and somebody had responded to that. So I did not get into it
- 46:49fully, but I will certainly. Tex says the rumors unmansion are heating up
- 46:54big time. Lots of chatter about it. Text says on Craig Blair not
- 47:01to see or not sad rather to see Blair go. But wonder at that
- 47:05district shot itself in the foot by choosing a freshman representative over someone with influence.
- 47:10As a texture, Texas dave, social issues had divided our communities.
- 47:15This is what the GOP wants. Uh tex says, sorry that Hobby will
- 47:22be gone again this week. He's the best. Indeed, he is,
- 47:24That's why they called him the goat. Texas, mister Adams's correct tar is
- 47:30going to have issues in Putnam. His judicial candidate got crushed, his selected
- 47:34school board president is burning more bridges than building them, and he only shows
- 47:37up during campaign season. He will get primaried. According to a texture Texas
- 47:43says, the latest rumor is, in addition to Joe Manchion for governor,
- 47:45is a real possibility that Shelley more Capito will retire while Jim Justice is still
- 47:51the governor and Justice will appoint more Capito to fill the Senate seats. Tex
- 47:57says Newsflash Day. Many within the West Virginia Republican Party loathe Patrick Morrison.
- 48:02Tex says Eric Tarr will be the next Senate president. There's no other route
- 48:07for anyone else to gain a majority, says a Texter. So as we
- 48:14speak, canvassing from last week's election is going on at the voters registration building
- 48:19the Canaw County government's Facebook page is actually streaming it. It's riveting, riveting,
- 48:23I tell you, I say that song you can cheap because when I'm
- 48:27during my days with the Secretary of State's office, I set through plenty of
- 48:30canvassing. And let me tell you it watching with all due respect, it's
- 48:35part of the process. But watching paint dry would probably be a pretty good
- 48:39analogy. But again, it is a necessary part of the process. That's
- 48:43now at some point after the canvas, if everything goes according to plan and
- 48:47they stay on schedule, the Commission, which now consists of just Ben Selango
- 48:52and Lance Wheeler, are scheduled to meet to begin the process of replacing Kent
- 48:57Carper, who resigned last week on the Friday before the primary. Actually he'd
- 49:02be last week in a couple of days, if you're listening to the show.
- 49:06On Friday, I had commission President of Bensolango on and he says he's
- 49:09eager to get it taken care of, and I'm sure that Commissioner Lance Wheeler
- 49:14is as well. They will announce today in theory the deadline and all the
- 49:20other particulars for filling that seat which is held by Commissioner Carper of course Commissioner
- 49:24Carper got beat in the election, but he is still the county commissioner until
- 49:30the new county commissioners are sworn in in January of next year, whether it
- 49:35would be Chris Walters or Natalie Tenant. So Carper is still he's still the
- 49:40county commissioner. Well, no, I mean, let me back up,
- 49:43he's not the county commissioner. That seat somebody's going to fill that seat.
- 49:47That's what I'm trying to say. We know it will be a Democrat appointed
- 49:52and that that person must live in District one or in District four. Now,
- 49:57so Lango represents District two and Wheeler is out of District three. So
- 50:04if Selango and Wheeler cannot agree on who it should be, then the Kanawa
- 50:09County Democratic Executive Committee will will step in. So what's gonna happen? Uh?
- 50:15Selango and Wheeler seemingly get along great, but you know one is a
- 50:21Democrat that's been Selango and one is Republican Lance Wheeler, So they could possibly
- 50:27have different ideas as to whom it should be to fill that seat. And
- 50:32if you go back to last week's last Wednesday's show, that at that time
- 50:37I had on Democratic nominee Natalie Tenant on the show, and she said that
- 50:44she love to be appointed in that position early. Of course, as I
- 50:47said earlier, she has to face Republican Chris Walters in the November general election.
- 50:52And some have said, no matter whether it's Natalie Tenant or whomever,
- 50:55that if somebody is appointed, that it could give them a bit of an
- 51:00advantage named recognition and things of that nature. I would say about Natalie Tenant,
- 51:02she's already got the name recognition, no former Secretary of State, and
- 51:06she's run for other offices. If I were to place a bet on it,
- 51:12I would say that Selango probably would have no problem with putting Natalie Tennant
- 51:17on the ballot early. But I'm told for what it's for what it's worth,
- 51:23that Lance Wheeler probably won't go for that. So the Executive Committee may
- 51:29indeed have to be involved. We shall see. Now. The actual meeting
- 51:32to fill the vacancy will be on May thirtieth. Carrie Houdasak hasn't end up
- 51:37story posted about it now at wv metronews dot com. In the meantime,
- 51:40as far as it goes with Kent Carper, it's fully out there that there
- 51:45will be no charges filed against Kent Carper, none from the Charleston p D
- 51:49and none from the Feds. The FEDS got involved because of the email offering
- 51:54a job to the girlfriend of the investigating officer that Carper allegedly sent after the
- 52:01incident at Daniel Boone Park last May. Now I had a chance to catch
- 52:06Will Thompson on Hobby last week. He was also with Mark Curtis on Inside
- 52:08Politics for the weekend. He said, it's over so there, it's over
