- 0:00I've always wanted to help organizations have authentic
- 0:06laid-back conversations with employees at the end of the
- 0:09year. And what I mean by authentic,
- 0:12lay back. I've wanted those conversations
- 0:14to be incredibly vulnerable, incredibly honest transparent.
- 0:22If they need to be tough, they need to be emotional.
- 0:25So be it. I've one of them to be in a
- 0:29setting where it feels a little bit more comfortable.
- 0:32It feels a little bit more safe. and I've wanted to make sure
- 0:37that organizations know that the data that comes from these
- 0:41conversations should be dated, that is utilized in q1 of the
- 0:46following year and I think towards the back end of the
- 0:50year, At a human being level. But definitely at an
- 0:55organizational level is the best time to reflect is the best time
- 0:59to think is the best time to ponder is the best time to gear
- 1:04up to make new changes. And so I have a few thoughts
- 1:08here that I would love to share questions, Concepts thoughts
- 1:12that I believe, every single manager, supervisor director VP
- 1:18should be, should be discussing with their team members to gain
- 1:22Clarity, to gain, understanding to, to set set the stage better
- 1:26for the next year. Q1 few thoughts here.
- 1:32First question that I want every single manager and leader to ask
- 1:35their people is when it comes to direct report communication
- 1:39style, right? So me being a supervisor, the
- 1:44way that I communicate with you directly, I want you to
- 1:48understand first and foremost, the importance of one's
- 1:52communication Style. And how communication style can
- 1:57can can be a lot of different structures and systems around
- 2:00it, right? Like, like communication can be
- 2:03simply your tonality of your voice.
- 2:06Communication can be, how often, and how consistent you
- 2:08communicate with your direct reports?
- 2:10And your team members communication can be what you
- 2:13actually say. It can be when in the moments in
- 2:16which you say it, it can be the things that you actually say in
- 2:20the a lot, the amount of information that you actually
- 2:23explained and uh, Unpack. It can be a multitude of things.
- 2:29And so you as a leader should understand the contextual
- 2:33nature, that contextual desires, That your people want to have
- 2:38when it comes to your personal communication style.
- 2:41So if I'm sitting down with Sarah today and I say, Sarah
- 2:44walk me through the contextual communication style that you
- 2:48would like to see more from me and in 2023 world she may talk
- 2:52about a numerous going to talk about a number of things.
- 2:55She may talk about well when you're stressed out and when
- 2:59things aren't necessarily going Route, when you couldn't when
- 3:01you communicate with me, I never told you this, but I struggle
- 3:07with anxiety. I struggle with moments where I
- 3:12feel incredibly uncomfortable, because when I'm seeing you, you
- 3:15know, heighten your in an, Escalade, your voice in their
- 3:18tonality of your voice. When I see the you're stressed
- 3:20out, I care so much about the company.
- 3:22I care so much about you. It triggers me.
- 3:25And instead of me rising to the occasion, based off of how I
- 3:29grew up, it actually scares me and actually puts me into a
- 3:33threat. Response.
- 3:34It actually makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable.
- 3:36It actually makes me feel like I can't get any more work done.
- 3:39It makes me feel like, I'm, I'm scared to move in any which
- 3:42direction. And so, you being a leader
- 3:44hearing that hearing that vulnerability here that Honesty.
- 3:47There may be some changes that could be made that can impact
- 3:50and benefit everyone involved. So, that's number one questions.
- 3:54That should be asked, and then conversations, that should be
- 3:56brought up career. Mappings another category and
- 3:59question that I think is incredibly important.
- 4:02Every single employee that you're leaving, I guarantee has
- 4:04a goal, career-wise. I guarantee it.
- 4:08They may want more money. They may want a new title.
- 4:11They may want to restructure their role.
- 4:12Currently, they may want to have more opportunities in the 2023
- 4:16World. They may want to have an
- 4:17adjustment of workflows they want.
- 4:19Something something. Can be improved, something from
- 4:22a career mapping perspective can be different.
- 4:26Talk to them, where you going. Where do you want to go?
- 4:31You know, think about, you know, what I can do as a leader to
- 4:34support you where you want to go?
- 4:36Do I need to double down more on Learning and Development?
- 4:38Do I need to double down on an exposure?
- 4:41Do I need to double down on the information that I share with
- 4:44you so that you can just be around where you inevitably want
- 4:47to go? Do you want to have at some
- 4:50point in life my position? Do I need to sit down at a very
- 4:54detailed micro variable and explain every little thing that
- 4:57I do and allow you to Shadow me, allow you to be around.
- 5:01Me and really understand some things.
- 5:03Do I need to put you in my Learning and Development moment
- 5:05that you feel will be contractual to your Learning and
- 5:07Development style and needs. What can I do to support where
- 5:11you want to go? And really you as a leader
- 5:13understanding that detailed like understanding that at the
- 5:16detailed level understanding where they want to go, what they
- 5:19want to do with the time period around it, what you can do to
- 5:22support them personally and then being able to translate
- 5:27translate that into into the q1 efforts that you that Apply.
- 5:31As you try to lead taking that information and sharing with the
- 5:34HR department, taking that information and sharing it with
- 5:38your VP. If you're just a director and
- 5:40really working hard to take that data and cultivate a plan for
- 5:44that individual cultivated plan, just for that person.
- 5:48Cultivate a plan that will speak to them, and no one else getting
- 5:52that. Contextual should be something
- 5:54that happened to be on at the end of the year here.
- 5:59Give me one more and then we'll wrap up here.
- 6:03Real life. Support is actually one that I
- 6:06think we need to put more effort on family needs financial needs
- 6:12workflow adjustments moments in life where you typically have
- 6:15the support and friends but due to certain circumstances you
- 6:19know you're having a lot of things changing with your
- 6:22friends and your family and you may be pulled from your work
- 6:25Mental Health. Work-life balance days off,
- 6:30maybe you should know from your team members heading into 2023
- 6:35heading into q1, what life looks like for them.
- 6:38At a personal level. What life looks like familywize.
- 6:41What life looks like mentally wise.
- 6:43What life looks like financially as much as you're comfortable
- 6:45sharing. What life looks like from a
- 6:47work-life balance. What life looks like as it
- 6:50pertains to how families going to be extracting and draining
- 6:52their energy. You as a leader need to know,
- 6:55what can you do personally Even if you have to go up above you
- 7:00go to your VP. Go to the c-suite, go to the HR
- 7:03department and get clarity is good, green lights, whatever you
- 7:06need to do. You need to know personally,
- 7:07what you can do to help this direct report as a pertains to
- 7:12the real life. If I were doing this for my
- 7:16mother, I would change workflows.
- 7:18I would change times, I would make, I would make the schedules
- 7:21in which he needed to come and go into work.
- 7:23Very contextual to the things that are happening with her
- 7:26daughter and things that are happening with her own mental
- 7:28health. The things that are happening
- 7:29with her own, you know, restrictions.
- 7:31I will be very, very, contextual enough pathetic as much as I
- 7:34could be, but there's no way that I would even know these
- 7:37things. Unless I'm having a very deep
- 7:38contextual conversation. So the point is this You need to
- 7:42have these really contextual nuanced conversations at scale
- 7:47and the only way you can do that at scale but I also have it.
- 7:51Very contextual is to assign every manager of a five-person
- 7:546% 7%. Team to had these one-on-one
- 7:57conversations and utilize these categories and get very
- 8:00vulnerable, give very deep give. Every Nuance get very contextual
- 8:03and really understand what's happening in the minds of your
- 8:05people. Take that data, go to the VP, go
- 8:09to the HR team, go to the c-suite, do whatever you need.
- 8:11Do, but take the data and make change, and make sure that your
- 8:14people feel that change in q1. As always just a few thoughts,
- 8:20just a few perspectives. Let's crush the end of the year.
- 8:24We'll talk soon. Let's crush the end of the year.
- 8:24We'll talk soon.
