- 0:00Hey everybody, welcome to Mamas in Miami
- 0:02and happy Monday. Today we are going to
- 0:05try third times a charm to invite Nina
- 0:08back into our feed. She's going to be
- 0:11speaking to us about her family's
- 0:12journey as we continue the celebration
- 0:14of pride here this month on Mamas in
- 0:17Miami. Um we are going to attempt to
- 0:20invite her third times a charm. Like I
- 0:23said, we're having a little bit of
- 0:24technical difficulties.
- 0:36I hope everybody had a happy Father's
- 0:39Day. For those of you that were
- 0:41listening in to the uh prior moments
- 0:44before, I took my husband to the Justin
- 0:47Timberlake concert for Father's Day.
- 0:50Probably not where he wanted to be. Um
- 0:52but he was a trooper and we ended up
- 0:54having so much fun. The concert was
- 0:56amazing. We definitely felt our age. Um
- 1:00I self-proclaimed my section, the uh 40s
- 1:04and over section. As um a lot of you
- 1:08know, we've been following him since his
- 1:10in sync days, which were like a
- 1:11bajillion years ago. And I felt like
- 1:13there was definitely
- 1:16more older people than younger people at
- 1:19the concert, but nevertheless, we had a
- 1:21great
- 1:23time.
- 1:25Here we go.
- 1:34Nina. Nina, instead of inviting me to
- 1:37join your feed, do it the other way
- 1:40around. There you are. Hi. Hi. How's it
- 1:44going, Christie? Good. How are you?
- 1:46Third time's always a charm.
- 1:52Oh, don't worry. Uh we once Lizzie and I
- 1:55discussed um how my brother had to come
- 1:57and give me a whole lecture of how all
- 1:59of this stuff works and of course you
- 2:02know what can but thank you so much for
- 2:04for joining us today. Thank you for
- 2:07having me. I was um just mentioning
- 2:10before that you and I probably know each
- 2:12other through Miami's infamous three
- 2:14degrees of separation or less. I
- 2:16wouldn't be surprised. Um, so I'm so
- 2:20grateful that we had somebody in common
- 2:21that put us together because I'm so
- 2:24excited to hear about your family story.
- 2:26Why don't you start by telling us a
- 2:28little bit about yourself? Sure. Sure.
- 2:30Um, so my name is Nina Moss. I am a
- 2:33physical therapist. So that's why I'm
- 2:35here in my office right now. Um, I'm
- 2:37actually I specialize in women's health.
- 2:39So it's a lot of pelvic floor
- 2:40dysfunction, like pregnancy and
- 2:42postpartum, all that fun stuff. Um, I am
- 2:46married. I have two kids, very tiny. I
- 2:49have a almost two-year-old and a
- 2:51six-month-old. How are you managing
- 2:52that?
- 2:55Am I managing is more the question. Um,
- 2:58it's fun. It's fun. Everyone's just
- 3:00telling me this two shall pass. So, I
- 3:02think that's the mantra, but honestly,
- 3:04no. It's a great time, but it is
- 3:05definitely crazy. We have two under two.
- 3:07So, you know, if you have any uh advice,
- 3:11I'm I'm here for it.
- 3:14And I must say that when my second child
- 3:16came, I feel horrible saying this out
- 3:18loud. She still doesn't have a baby
- 3:20album. Um, she's 10 years old. She
- 3:23probably never will. And I don't
- 3:25remember her first two years of life
- 3:27unless they're on a video camera or a
- 3:30picture camera. I feel a lot better. And
- 3:32you know, funny enough, I'm the youngest
- 3:33of four, and I'm pretty sure I have no
- 3:37photos of myself when I was younger. And
- 3:39my mom said, you know, you're just
- 3:41you're lucky you made it through. So,
- 3:43yeah, you're here, you're standing,
- 3:46you've got all your limbs. And I think I
- 3:48now understand what she was talking
- 3:50about. I mean, you once they're both
- 3:53going to maybe preschool, you're kind of
- 3:54you start coasting. Oh god, that's like
- 3:58the scary part we're in. We're about to
- 4:00start school. So, the trauma,
- 4:03I promise you, it's going to be the
- 4:05greatest thing ever. You're going to be
- 4:06able to go to the grocery store and
- 4:07there's not going to be little hands
- 4:08grabbing Oreos and cereal
- 4:11and throwing them in the shopping cart.
- 4:16That you are a physical therapist. And I
- 4:18have to ask, I'm sure there's many in my
- 4:20position that we just smile and nod.
- 4:21What the hell is a pelvic floor?
- 4:27Welcome a picture.
- 4:30What are we looking at?
- 4:32Pelvic floor is anything that sits
- 4:36inside your pelvis. So connected to the
- 4:38back. We see the hips and it's basically
- 4:42everything in red. So I love it. I think
- 4:45it's an excellent career. We help I I'm
- 4:48mainly based in women. So yes, men do
- 4:50have a pelvic floor. They just don't
- 4:51like to talk about it as much. Um uh
- 4:54women do have more pelvic floor
- 4:56dysfunction. So it's anything. It could
- 4:58be back pain, hip pain, pain with
- 5:00intercourse, um any sort of leakage,
- 5:02issues after menopause, hysterctomies
- 5:05when you're pregnant, postpartum. It
- 5:07like runs the gamut. So, it's it's
- 5:09something I I got into and it's like a
- 5:11passion of mine. So, I love it. Is that
- 5:14something you always knew you wanted
- 5:15that specialty? Oh, god, no. I thought I
- 5:18was going to be into sports and I played
- 5:20soccer all my life, so I was like, you
- 5:22know, I had no the furthest thing from
- 5:25it.
- 5:26So funny. So, how did that come and how
- 5:29does that help when you now are on this
- 5:32path of when you started your your
- 5:34family and you knew everything about the
- 5:36pelvic pelvic floor, did that influence
- 5:39how the baby was carried or the nine
- 5:42months of pregnancy leading up to it? I
- 5:44can't wait till you speak to my wife who
- 5:47did all of that work. So, my wife was
- 5:49pregnant, Lindsay, both times. Uh, so
- 5:52she carried and she is also my worst
- 5:55patient thus far um, classically. So she
- 5:59actually had great pregnancies
- 6:00throughout. Would I love for her to take
- 6:03my advice? Yes. Will she? You have to
- 6:06ask her when is her around. We both have
- 6:09our our opinions about that.
- 6:12But so we're going to um share your
- 6:15family story in two 30 minute sessions.
- 6:18That's how we work at Mamas in Miami
- 6:21because we never have more than 30
- 6:23minutes of time to dedicate to listening
- 6:25to something for ourselves. So, we will
- 6:27save all those questions for your wife
- 6:29Lindsay when we speak to her on
- 6:30Thursday. But for right now, you
- 6:32mentioned that you are the mama of two
- 6:35under two. Amen.
- 6:38Amen. And they're about to start school,
- 6:40correct? The almost two-year-old, he's
- 6:43about to go into school in August. Yes.
- 6:45Oh my goodness. So when you went to
- 6:47start looking for a preschool, um did
- 6:51your have any influence on the school
- 6:54you chose? Meaning are you prepared for
- 6:57the possible backlash of you know the
- 7:00two mommy situation and what kids might
- 7:02say at school and have you kind of
- 7:04thought about how you would navigate
- 7:06what could happen in the future? Of
- 7:09course. I mean I think Lindsay and I
- 7:11have had these conversations over and
- 7:13over and over again. Um, I think it's
- 7:15easier said than done because once you
- 7:16are in the situation, how you react
- 7:19might be differently. Um, I think that
- 7:21was a big part of our search for schools
- 7:23in general. We wanted to make sure that
- 7:26I want my both of my kids to be in a
- 7:28school environment where neither the
- 7:30staff nor the parents bat an eye on the
- 7:33fact that there are two moms to whatever
- 7:36students involved, whether it's two
- 7:37dads, two moms, whatever it might be.
- 7:39Um, so that was a huge factor in us
- 7:42deciding on schools. Um, but yeah, here
- 7:46at Miami, did did you find any negative
- 7:50uh feedback when you started the
- 7:51process? Um, we've been touring schools
- 7:54and honestly, everyone's been super
- 7:55great. I think if anything, it was more
- 7:57so confusion and we just uh, you know,
- 8:00we're pretty swift in general just to
- 8:01correct it. uh not to make anyone feel
- 8:04bad but just just so there's clarity in
- 8:06terms of what what the what the
- 8:08situation is, what the dynamic is. Um
- 8:10and on the contrary, I feel like when
- 8:12things are awkward, the best thing I can
- 8:14do to help out is just give clarity to
- 8:17the situation. Um and I think that
- 8:19honestly it eliminates a lot of the
- 8:22awkwardness and a lot of the questions
- 8:23when you just go outright and state it.
- 8:26Sure. And your children, I'm sure, know
- 8:29better. Oh god, no. I think my son Mateo
- 8:33calls everyone from myself, my wife, the
- 8:37nanny, my mother, everyone's mama. Oh,
- 8:40so sweet. How old is Mateo? Is he older
- 8:43or younger? Mateo is older. He is about
- 8:46to turn two in July. And then we have
- 8:48Maya, who is six months. Oh, that's
- 8:51amazing. Oh, you are in the thick of it.
- 8:55What um strategies are you going to
- 8:58implement in terms of um just being out
- 9:01in the community with after school
- 9:03activities? Are you going to look for a
- 9:05community that's like yours or are you
- 9:07just going to try to integrate into, you
- 9:10know, the traditional
- 9:13um is there a community out there of uh
- 9:16where somebody can say I want to, you
- 9:18know, expose my children to a family
- 9:20structure like mine and we're going to
- 9:22go here so that they see what they see
- 9:24at home. Yeah. You know, luckily for us,
- 9:27we do have a really good friends group
- 9:30um with a lot of same couples that they
- 9:33already do have kids. Our kids are a
- 9:35little bit younger in the whole group.
- 9:36So, honestly, we feel lucky in that
- 9:39sense that they've kind of like done the
- 9:40work ahead of us. Uh they often give us
- 9:43good advice. Um even on schools and
- 9:45things like that. You know, we asked a
- 9:47few questions on certain schools and
- 9:48they said, "Oh, you know, maybe look in
- 9:50this direction." Um, which was super
- 9:52helpful for us because honestly we we
- 9:54were clueless going into it. Um, but in
- 9:58terms of honestly like those challenges
- 10:01in terms of community and everything, I
- 10:04we feel really lucky in the sense that I
- 10:06I've never felt backlash in that sense.
- 10:09Um, I do feel like we have a good sense
- 10:11of community in our friends group. Um,
- 10:14and when we do meet, you know, strangers
- 10:16or whoever who have questions, like I I
- 10:18have just have no problems answering it.
- 10:20that sort of want to educate and expose
- 10:23because really at the end of the day I
- 10:25think knowledge is power. So if if you
- 10:26don't know I'm sure you are a little
- 10:28sketched out or you do have questions.
- 10:30So I'm I'm happy to answer. Yeah. And I
- 10:33also so part of the reason why Lizzie
- 10:35and I opened Mamas in Miami is because
- 10:37we realized everybody has a with you.
- 10:39Lizzy is not here with me now. But
- 10:42Lizzy, so you'll have to hear how it we
- 10:46birthed this because now I'm starting to
- 10:47think my pelvic floor had something to
- 10:49do with what happened to me. I had a
- 10:51level fusion two months ago. Oh, yeah.
- 10:54And I uh it was a result of a birth
- 10:56defect. I didn't know I had in my spine,
- 10:58but I'm pretty sure that pregnancies
- 11:00made my vertebrae slip forward even more
- 11:02and more and more until it finally got
- 11:05to where it got to and ended up in
- 11:07surgery. Lizzie helped me preop for this
- 11:09surgery. Wow. Oh, Lizzie since I was 10
- 11:12years old. So, we kind of bird this
- 11:14together in the Pilates room saying, "I
- 11:17wish there was a fly on the wall that
- 11:18was recording our conversations because
- 11:20Liz and I couldn't be more extreme in
- 11:22our parenting skills, but we all the
- 11:24commonality and we all ended up in the
- 11:26same place." And we said, "You know
- 11:28what? If this is you and me who could
- 11:30not be more different in our approaches,
- 11:32I'm sure that if we opened a platform
- 11:34for every mom to give their story, we
- 11:37would all end up in the same road to the
- 11:40end to the same end story to the same
- 11:42end game. Absolutely. And I ask
- 11:46questions like a first timer off the
- 11:48street too and forgive my ignorance if I
- 11:51say or you know mean something
- 11:52incorrectly or I have to backtrack
- 11:54because we're all just learning here,
- 11:56right? Yes. a thousand%. And I mean,
- 11:58look at my world in the pelvic floor.
- 12:00Like, all I do is answer questions all
- 12:02day long. So, this is nothing new to me.
- 12:04There's no TMI in my world either. So,
- 12:06So, you're the pelvic floor specialist.
- 12:09Uh, Lizzie wanted to talk to, so she may
- 12:11be calling you. I love it. I'm into it.
- 12:14I can't
- 12:16Well, I'm going to leave her to talk
- 12:18pelvic floor talk with you, and I'll
- 12:19keep asking my
- 12:21questions. You see, there's the three
- 12:23degrees of separation I was talking
- 12:24about.
- 12:26wondering what where this is going. Good
- 12:27to know. Oh, that's so funny. Okay, so
- 12:30back to my questions because I have a
- 12:33list, right? So, um, one of my other
- 12:36questions would be, what advice would
- 12:38you give to a two female household who
- 12:41did come across somebody that maybe
- 12:42wasn't as welcoming or had criticism or
- 12:45I mean, have you ever had somebody come
- 12:46up to you on the street and say
- 12:48something negative?
- 12:50You know, thankfully, no. I I do get um
- 12:55a lot of just questions of h you know
- 12:57how did you create a family is is the
- 12:59main one and uh or just how does it
- 13:01work? I didn't know that was possible
- 13:03which you know it just gives you a great
- 13:07opportunity at the end of the day that
- 13:09that's how I take it. Um you know of
- 13:12course there's I'm sure negative
- 13:13connotations and maybe just um confusion
- 13:16and and not the most proud way. Um, and
- 13:20in that case, honestly, you know, we we
- 13:23you do come across it within family and
- 13:25within things like that. And I think the
- 13:29best advice I can give to those people
- 13:30who maybe just aren't into this or have,
- 13:33you know, negative connotations is
- 13:35really, you know, happiness looks
- 13:37different for everyone. Um, and really
- 13:40at the end of the day, if you know, if
- 13:42if it creates peace of mind, it creates
- 13:45happiness. At the end of the day, we we
- 13:46only have one life. I think perspective
- 13:48is everything. So if you living your
- 13:51life in a certain way that might be
- 13:53different than the cultural norms, let's
- 13:54say and it doesn't harm the other
- 13:56person. You know what more can you ask
- 13:58for? You know, I think in life you're
- 14:00going to meet people where agree to
- 14:02disagree is probably your best bet. And
- 14:05you're not always going to meet in the
- 14:06middle with someone. Um but it it
- 14:09doesn't steer me away from being kind to
- 14:12anyone, you know. I think being kind and
- 14:15considerate and just a a mutual level of
- 14:17respect is everything whether you agree
- 14:18or agree or disagree.
- 14:21Amen. Was you did you have a supportive
- 14:23family?
- 14:25Um for the most part yes. I think it was
- 14:27more so you know it was a rough start.
- 14:30Um only in the sense of again just
- 14:33confusion. It was a lot of unexpected.
- 14:36They didn't see that one coming. Um, so
- 14:39it just takes a while and I've learned
- 14:41that if it took me so long to feel
- 14:44comfortable in my skin, I have to think,
- 14:48God, how long is it going to take them
- 14:50to come around? And then when you do
- 14:52when at least in my background in my
- 14:55personal experience when you do have the
- 14:59you know you're in the right my like
- 15:01mental space to actually say it and and
- 15:04be honest with yourself you have to give
- 15:07them time and grace to come around to it
- 15:09you know and I think that is tough uh
- 15:11for a lot of like you know same-sex
- 15:14couples just someone coming out whatever
- 15:16it might be it's just remembering that
- 15:18it's a shock for everyone. Sure. Um, so
- 15:21yes, we want everyone to come around as
- 15:23quickly as possible, but that's just not
- 15:25the reality of life. Sure. Sure. But now
- 15:28they have grandbabies, so they must be
- 15:30over them. Not I mean, they now they
- 15:32have grandbabies. They talk to Lindsay,
- 15:34my wife, more than myself, so what more
- 15:37can I ask for? That's so funny. So, I
- 15:41have a question, and it might be more of
- 15:43a cultural question for the
- 15:45CubanAmerican community.
- 15:47So, I remember that the first question I
- 15:51got asked by my grandma who passed away,
- 15:52who I love and adore, was when's the
- 15:56baptism, right? So, my question to you
- 16:00is, how do you navigate religion um in a
- 16:04same-sex household? Um assuming being
- 16:08CubanAmerican yourself, you were
- 16:10probably raised Christian or Catholic
- 16:12and Exactly. going to church and mass on
- 16:15Sundays and I'm sure you got the
- 16:18question about religion for your kids.
- 16:19How are you going to navigate that if
- 16:21you don't mind my asking? Yes, my mom
- 16:23and I talked about it just a few hours
- 16:25ago actually. Yes. So, born and raised
- 16:28Catholic. Um, your classic Cuban uh
- 16:32Catholic families, the whole bit. Um,
- 16:35you know, we talk about this all the
- 16:37time because my mom did want us to
- 16:40baptize our kids and still is asking.
- 16:42Um, and it's just something that, you
- 16:45know, I I laid it out here plain and
- 16:47simple is, you know, at the end of the
- 16:49day, it's unfortunate because with a
- 16:53baptism, they don't recognize two
- 16:55mothers. So, you would actually, you
- 16:57know, on the little certificate need to
- 16:59pick one mother and then go from there.
- 17:02And then that's, you know, it's just
- 17:04something that we're not comfortable
- 17:05with. And it's principle more than
- 17:07anything else of why are we going to be
- 17:09part of a of a religion that just
- 17:11doesn't accept us as a whole as a unit
- 17:14as a family. Um and you know we Lindsay
- 17:18and I talk about this a lot in the sense
- 17:19of yes we were born Catholic. Uh are we
- 17:22so locked onto our religion? No. Um do
- 17:25we both have you know spirituality in
- 17:27us? Yes, a thousand%. Um, I think
- 17:29there's so many other religions out
- 17:31there that in our perspective are just
- 17:34maybe a little more accepting, a little
- 17:36more broad, um, that don't require so
- 17:40much, you know, rigidity in their
- 17:43beliefs and in their practice. Um, so
- 17:46and and for that reason, I I tell my
- 17:48mom, you know, at the end of the day, if
- 17:49they're not going to recognize two moms,
- 17:51do you want us to be a part of it? You
- 17:54know, it's tough for her because she's
- 17:56like, I just think it's a beautiful
- 17:57tradition. And so my response to that is
- 17:59we talk about well why don't we choose
- 18:01another tradition within the Catholic
- 18:04faith that we both can agree on and that
- 18:05we can hop on you know all together with
- 18:07our kids or we just create new
- 18:08traditions altogether because at the end
- 18:10of the day we all believe in the same
- 18:12things it's just how strictly are we
- 18:14going to follow and how did she
- 18:19um I think she took it well you know at
- 18:21the end of the day I said do you think
- 18:23our kids are any less close to God let's
- 18:27She goes, "No, absolutely not." So I
- 18:29said, "Perfect." Like then what more,
- 18:32you know, what more can I ask for? Like
- 18:34you love our kids. I love my kids. So
- 18:36does, you know, the big man up there. So
- 18:38right, the way we practice is just is
- 18:41subjective.
- 18:43So I assume um have you found a
- 18:46religious community that you feel
- 18:49comfortable practicing your faith in or
- 18:51not yet? You know, not so much. I mean,
- 18:54we do feel like we're spiritual, but do
- 18:56we attend mass all the time? No, we do
- 18:58not. Um, so, no, nothing specific.
- 19:01Um, you know, I'm not sure what we would
- 19:04align with. We do talk about it
- 19:05sometimes. I think like, um,
- 19:07Episcopalian is probably the closest
- 19:08thing that we both fall on the same page
- 19:10with. Um, I laugh because my mom also
- 19:13told me about 30 minutes ago that she
- 19:16quote unquote self-baptized our
- 19:17children. And I just found this out
- 19:18right now. She poured holy water on them
- 19:21one day when they were babysitting. That
- 19:23is so funny. You know, it's
- 19:27like my my grandma wanted to do
- 19:30something a little similar with uh two
- 19:32of my
- 19:33nephews like what if we just go to to
- 19:36the you know the church on Saturday and
- 19:38while they're over somebody's house. I'm
- 19:40like no you can't do
- 19:44exact well I have the holy water and I
- 19:47was like well if it helps you sleep at
- 19:48night you could bathe I'm okay with it.
- 19:51Sure. Sure. And I'm sure that you know
- 19:54you do talk about um spirituality and
- 19:57faith with your children and you just
- 20:00what you kind of like just mold it to
- 20:02something else. Do they watch Veggie
- 20:04Tales? You know, it's tough because
- 20:05they're they're too small. You know,
- 20:07right now
- 20:08we're on on Re. So
- 20:12that's as mature as we're getting right
- 20:14now with Matteo and we still have a blob
- 20:17with Maya that she's six months.
- 20:20We haven't crossed this path yet. I'm
- 20:24sure it's coming. Um, have we prepped
- 20:26for it? Not quite.
- 20:29That's interest. I I love that you're
- 20:32telling me all this because these are
- 20:34questions I've always had, but I've had
- 20:35nobody to ask. Yeah. I mean, I wish
- 20:38Yeah. Everyone asks all the time, "Well,
- 20:40how are you going to do it?" I said, "I
- 20:41don't know. How are you gonna do it?"
- 20:42They were like, "I don't know. We just
- 20:43figure it out when it comes." I said,
- 20:45"Exactly the same." you know, I I I wish
- 20:47there was a better recipe or formula,
- 20:49especially in our case because it's um
- 20:51maybe not so typical. So, but um but no,
- 20:55I I mean, same idea. We kind of just
- 20:57like we'll figure it out as we go. I
- 21:00love your dog. The It's
- 21:03popcorn. She's like our unofficial
- 21:05mascot here. She She loves to be on the
- 21:07podcast. Um, the commonality here, no
- 21:11matter who, what, where, what color,
- 21:13what size, whatever it is, the
- 21:15commonality is that when you have a
- 21:17child, it doesn't come with an
- 21:18instruction manual. Oh, God. No. And
- 21:21that's because every single family is
- 21:23unique. I always say this and you have
- 21:25to grab from everywhere and mix it in a
- 21:28bowl and pray to the gods that it's
- 21:30going to work out for you. Oh. Um,
- 21:32because you there's not one sizefits-all
- 21:35in inations.
- 21:37of no that's Jewish and Catholic even if
- 21:40it's heterosexual family they still have
- 21:43to navigate waters that there's no
- 21:45instruction manual for also oh far from
- 21:47it and I think that's when a lot of the
- 21:50struggle comes in too is when we even
- 21:52talk about u the way we went about um
- 21:56conceiving the kids and how that might
- 21:59conflict with religion too gets a little
- 22:01tough for many people and many families
- 22:03as well but for the most most part it
- 22:05sounds like your family was very
- 22:07supportive considering, you know, yeah,
- 22:10at the end of the day, they they had
- 22:13questions regarding a donor in that
- 22:14process, but um and what do you call it?
- 22:17What is he? Who is he? Can you see him?
- 22:20Um does he does he exist? Is he in the
- 22:24cloud?
- 22:25If I don't I don't I don't know. Um
- 22:29yeah, it's more so I I asked him, "Well,
- 22:31how much do you want to know?" and I'll
- 22:33tell you, but uh otherwise like look at
- 22:35your grandkids and they don't we don't
- 22:38even think twice about it, you know.
- 22:40That's amazing. Um what do you have any
- 22:45support groups or websites or
- 22:50um group uh Facebook groups that you
- 22:52rely on when you have to for example
- 22:55investigate how are we going to approach
- 22:57spirituality? How are we going to
- 22:59approach you know a bully at school? Is
- 23:01there some a go-to that you're using to
- 23:03right now for research? You know, I
- 23:06really lucky because it's it's our
- 23:07friends group at the end of the day. Um,
- 23:10you know, it's actually all of my my
- 23:12wife's friends that they've just adopted
- 23:15me. They're all a little bit older and
- 23:18they all already have their family. So,
- 23:20really that is like who we fall back on.
- 23:22We we're able to have these
- 23:24conversations. we feel comfortable and
- 23:27and just and being very honest and if we
- 23:29do disagree, you know, what do you
- 23:30suggest? So, we always kind of go back
- 23:32and forth and and we feel most
- 23:34comfortable with that. I mean, I wish I
- 23:36could provide or I had more resources
- 23:38locally in the community that I know
- 23:39about. Um but we feel lucky in that
- 23:42sense that we do have a good group
- 23:43locally and and we hang out all the time
- 23:45and yeah that that's our that group is
- 23:48constantly growing and
- 23:50evolving and this this day and age or is
- 23:53it like your set group like your core
- 23:56you know it's it's like the typical
- 23:58group. So you have to remember too that
- 24:01I'm younger and how old are you if you
- 24:03don't mind? We're 10 years apart. So, so
- 24:07Lindsay, it's funny when we talk about,
- 24:09you know, how we grew up and the whole
- 24:11like how did you come out and what is
- 24:13your community? Lindsay talks a lot
- 24:15about, you know, well, we had to rely on
- 24:18each other because there really wasn't
- 24:19anything else. Um, whereas I grew up a
- 24:23little bit more so where everything was
- 24:24already out in the open, a little more
- 24:26fluid. I go out and there really are no
- 24:28specific, you know, let's say, you know,
- 24:30gay clubs or bars because everyone is
- 24:33who who who they are regardless of of
- 24:36how fluid that is. Um, so it was kind of
- 24:39everyone already is is is mixed up where
- 24:41it wasn't so isolated or so far removed
- 24:45maybe a decade prior to that. Sure. Do
- 24:48you feel like in Miami your family is
- 24:51more representative in in all in the
- 24:54whole? Like do you see more families
- 24:56like you here in Miami as opposed if you
- 24:58would move out of the state or out of
- 25:00the city?
- 25:02That's tough.
- 25:04Um I feel like are you saying my
- 25:07immediate family or uh your your core
- 25:10family unit? Do you feel representative
- 25:13represented in Miami or do you feel like
- 25:15you would have maybe a bigger community
- 25:18to draw from if you left Miami?
- 25:20You know, we also talk about this.
- 25:23Um, I think I used to think we would
- 25:26need to leave in order to truly feel
- 25:30like I, you know, I can just walk out of
- 25:32the street, no big deal. No one's going
- 25:33to look, no one's going to ask. Um, but,
- 25:36you know, it's all the people you meet
- 25:37and it's all the community that you
- 25:39create. Um so you know over the over the
- 25:42years you do meet other similar couples
- 25:45other same samesex couples
- 25:47that you end up like you know finding
- 25:50each other and then you stick with it
- 25:51which is nice and then that ends up
- 25:53growing from there and I do feel you
- 25:55know since we've had a family since
- 25:57we've been married that the circle does
- 26:00open up and you start it just starts
- 26:03branching out from there
- 26:05whereas maybe five six seven years ago I
- 26:08was thinking oh god we have to go to
- 26:09California immediately. But Nina, don't
- 26:12you feel like that's a Miami thing, too?
- 26:15I feel you sit down and you meet a new I
- 26:18just met you and I'm when we hang up,
- 26:19I'm going to ask you like when do you
- 26:20want to get together? Because I feel
- 26:22like you and I have known each other
- 26:24forever. Clearly, we've been in the same
- 26:25circles forever, but you leave Miami and
- 26:29you don't get that vibe. And I don't
- 26:32know if it's the commonality of our
- 26:33culture and the way we grew up and the
- 26:35fact that Miami is like this big. Yes. I
- 26:37think it is is it's such a cultural tie.
- 26:41Um, which is such a plus and I feel like
- 26:44in in my world that um there's just more
- 26:47acceptance. It's just an easier way to
- 26:50way to accept and way to feel a sense of
- 26:52community, which yeah, I totally agree.
- 26:54I think if we had to start over in a new
- 26:56place, maybe culturally it would would
- 27:00be easy as a same-sex couple because
- 27:02maybe there's just a lot there, but I
- 27:04don't know how close we would mesh.
- 27:06Whereas in Miami, yes, I think the six
- 27:08degrees separation goes down to two half
- 27:10the time and it just makes it that much
- 27:13more simple. So, I I think you're
- 27:15absolutely right on that one. Well, just
- 27:17like I told you, 30 minutes flies. That
- 27:19was 30 minutes. Wow. I feel like we
- 27:22didn't even scratch the surface. You
- 27:25I'll come back at any time. Bring
- 27:26coffee. It's so funny. So, Lizzy's
- 27:29probably in route back from her big
- 27:30European trip. She's taking Willie
- 27:32overseas for the first time. And we
- 27:33can't wait to hear how that went for
- 27:35her. and she had told me, "I know of a
- 27:37pelvic floor therapist that I I want to
- 27:40have on at some point. Wait till she get
- 27:42lands and she realizes that I got team
- 27:45first." On it. I'm super excited. Well,
- 27:48I'm so excited to um share your wife's
- 27:52story with us. I'm just going to give a
- 27:54little preview. Well, why don't you give
- 27:55the preview for Linds Tell everybody
- 27:58what we're going to talk to Lindsay
- 27:59about on Thursday.
- 28:01So, with Lindsay, you're going to talk
- 28:02about our Beyond Modern family because
- 28:05besides the fact that I have a wife and
- 28:08I have two young kids under two, I also
- 28:10have a stepdaughter that is turning 24
- 28:13years old next month.
- 28:16Amazing. I am so excited to hear about
- 28:19this story. It just so happens that we
- 28:21all got together at my mother-in-law's
- 28:23house for Father's Day yesterday, and I
- 28:26was like, "You guys, who's this other
- 28:28girl in their
- 28:29picture? She keeps coming out, but she's
- 28:32like an adult. There's no way this is a
- 28:34child." And they said, "Oh, yes." So,
- 28:36needless to say, when we all go for
- 28:38walks in the neighborhood, it is like
- 28:40the funniest thing trying to explain
- 28:43like, "Who is who? Is this roommates?
- 28:45Are they sisters? Who are the kids?" I
- 28:48love ultramodern family. I cannot wait
- 28:51to meet you guys in person and hang out.
- 28:53I can't wait. Thank you. So, Nina,
- 28:56that's all the time we have for today.
- 28:58I'm going to extinguish our Mamas in
- 29:00Miami tribal um campfire that we are
- 29:03make believe on right now with you. And
- 29:05I'm just hoping everybody's coffee stays
- 29:07strong and their sanity intact until we
- 29:10meet again on Thursday. Thanks so much,
- 29:12Nina. Thank you. Bye. Bye.
