- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Telicate Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: My co-host, Tristan McGonagall, is here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Hey, Tristan, how about those Texas Tech Red Raiders?
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: How about them, Texas Tech Red Raiders from Texas Tech University at Lubbock, Texas, from the South Plains, also known as the High Plains, the Yano Esticado, the Hub City Red Raiders, baby?
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: They walked into the Rocky Mountains of Salt Lake and smoked the Impact 12 boys who are heading to the Big Ten.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Believe me, it's gonna happen, buddy.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Trust me.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: And we crushed them, dude.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: We need to do a thing that we do on this podcast.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: What is that thing?
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: We gotta do that thing.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: You gotta play the song.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: We must play the song.
- 1:32SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you, riding through the night for the fury of the West Texas win.
- 1:41SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:43SPEAKER_06: What a beautiful sign.
- 1:45SPEAKER_06: The Texas Tech Red Raiders riding riding again.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: Biggest win of Joey Maguire's tenure so far?
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: What do you think?
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Biggest win for Texas Tech football in the modern era, Steven.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Whoa.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: What is the modern era?
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: We all know what the modern era is.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: We don't need to define it.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: It defines itself.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: It's like the air you breathe.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: It's like gravity.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: You want to just explain that to me, dude?
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Apple falls from the tree.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: It's because it's heavier than air.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: That's how it works, dude.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Bingo, science.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Um, the air was thin in Salt Lake City because apparently there's so much higher elevation-wise than Lubbock, Texas.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: That is true.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Where they that was something that was one of my favorite things that Utah fans were bragging about.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: They're like, they're not gonna know how to play an elevation.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: It's like, brother, let me tell you about Lubbock, Texas.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it's called the high plains for a reason.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: I bet it's what?
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: It's only like a is it even much higher than Lubbock?
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: It's higher, it's higher, it's just not that much higher.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: They're like, oh, it's gonna affect them big time.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: And it's like big time.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: They're they're down there in the bayou.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: They're gonna come out of the swamp into these here peaks and be out of breath, gasping for air.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: They were gasping for air, all right?
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Because we were suffocating them.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Well, that's what I'm saying.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Their defense ran out of gas at the end of the game, whereas ours did not.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Our defense, let's start there, because I don't know if I've ever personally rooted for a football team that I can rely on so heavily defensively and just have all the faith in the world that we're gonna come up with a stop.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: It doesn't always necessarily end up in a turnover, but it is going to be a rarity to score on Texas Tech this year, which is insane to me.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Steven, I can tell you a team that I've relied on the defense as much with.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Oh the 2025 Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Okay, I was I thought you were gonna go.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: I thought you were going back to basketball, which you're defenses.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: That was that would have been a more clever thing than just it would have been button, but um it's uh but no dude, you're you're absolutely correct.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Like you know, I I think that's why I feel so much more enthusiastic or I should say confident moving through the season here.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's why I felt so confident going into Utah.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: It wasn't because I I thought our offense was going to be great, it's because I knew that our defense would be.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: And you know, I'm I think I'm now I'm finally witnessing it for my own team.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: I think I'm truly starting to understand when when people say defense wins you championships, because it's it's it's what travels, right?
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: It's the consistency of it.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: While offense can typically be much more inconsistent because you know you're playing something different each time, but with a defense, man, like I know obviously they still have to deal with what they're given, but you can just rely on the ferocity and the speed and the strength of these boys to really put the heat on the other side day in and day out, as it's being proven here.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: We've said it every week.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: This defensive line is something else.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: David Bailey, Romello Height, Lee Hunter, Skylar Gil Howard, who Skylar Gilhoward was getting the least amount of attention going into this year of those four guys.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: He's almost been my favorite.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's batting down balls, he is getting to the quarterback, he is stopping the run every chance he gets.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Lee Hunter and all those other guys have been fantastic, do not get me wrong.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: But I did not expect the NIU transfer, Skylar Gill Howard, to be as dominant as he is, and against this Utah offensive line, which everybody was hyping him up before the before the game, and they deserve it.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: They actually do have a really good offensive line.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: Those two tackles are going to be in the NFL, but they just handle them big time.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and as as their head coach Whittingham said, like they lost in the trenches, you know, and it's being said over and over again that this is gonna be the best O-line that Texas Tech sees all year, and that's probably still the truth.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Like, it's not like that's the star power on that line goes away, even though they get throttled, right?
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, you lose to you lose to the better team.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: That's how the sport works.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and dude, that just bodes so well as we proceed through the season.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: If that is the best O-line we play, we're just gonna paper shred as we move forward on the line.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: And I mean, if you're winning in the trenches, dude, you're winning your games.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's not just the defensive line.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: All three assets of the defense were incredible.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, the cornerbacks Balfour and Pollack made incredible plays on the outside, both defending the pass and also just getting out and making quick tackles.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, we could talk about the linebackers all day.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Jacob Rodriguez was unbelievable, batting out the ball.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: Uh Ben Roberts, who we were hoping were was gonna take a step this coming year.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: He was in he was insane.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: He's incredible.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: He he batted out the first ball um that caused the first fumble.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: And John Curry coming in at that star position, Cole Wisnesky was great, Brendan Jordan was great.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: There this whole defense is so reliable.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Dude, exactly, man.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you held a good offense to 10 points.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: You only had one big play against you, and that's okay.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: We'll take one big explosive play per game against us.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: They're gonna score touchdowns, it's gonna happen.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: But if we can limit them to one touchdown, we will win every single game.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty sure Matt can draw up more than one touchdown just uh in in points uh in his playbook just to get to get us over the line.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: Um, but dude, I I don't know about you, but for most of the game, because of the defense, I never felt that nervous.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I know obviously in my in my texts I'd be saying, like, wow, if we keep doing this, we could we could drop the game.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: But I mean, in the moment where we're watching all those penalties happen, it's just what frustration will do.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Like, yes, I really thought maybe we'd shoot our leg in the foot uh shoot our leg, shoot ourselves in the foot so much to the point where just we won't be able to score again, and defense is just gonna break, but they didn't.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: They just held strong the entire game.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Because what what what did uh Utah scored only only in the uh uh okay, they scored the touchdown in the fourth quarter, but still, I mean you held them to three points through three.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, that's pretty dang good.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean they was and and you really should have held them scoreless, uh, if it not were uh if it not for a PI penalty called on uh on Wisneski there at the end um after he missed the first field goal, or they missed the he got the penalty, set him up in field goal range, he missed the first field goal, then you got another penalty for roughing the kicker, and then they got another shot at it.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: So the penalties were an issue 14 total for this team, 122 total penalty yards uh on Texas Tech.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: This included seven false starts.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Speaks to the Utah crowd.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: It was a great crowd.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: They were there early for big noon kickoff.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: They showed up to the game, they were loud as heck, and it affected us.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: It affected the the entire offensive line.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Every single guy on the offensive line got at least one false start penalty from Jados to Samson to Davion Carter to Sheridan Wilson to Jacob Punt.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: All five of them got one false start uh call.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if we're gonna face a home crowd quite like Utah again this coming year.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: I don't think we're gonna get the same crowd in Arizona State.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: We're uh the way things are are going, we're definitely not gonna get that same crowd in Manhattan.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Houston is not gonna do that.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Morgantown, it's looking rough.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: So yeah, this is probably the most violent home crowd that you're gonna face, but that kind of stuff needs to be fixed, especially if you're gonna go further and further into this thing, because that first playoff game is on somebody's home field.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Hopefully it's on your home field, and hopefully you make the playoff.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: I'm getting way ahead of myself here, but it's I don't think the emphasis on you know going full speed into a silent count is very is needed much.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, as Joey kind of talked about it on his on his podcast that released uh earlier today, I got the I got a chance to listen to the whole thing, and he was kind of like, you know, it was a big deal.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: We weren't we weren't expecting a loud crowd like that.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: We should have probably gone in with a silent count, but you know, I don't think we're gonna need it for the rest of the year.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: And he's probably right.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: That's a great point.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: And you know, I I'm gonna choose to remain completely optimistic exiting this game.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: This was just a monster victory, and I don't want to get down on this team for pulling that domination off.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Um, because this is really we're gonna find the only criticism in the book here is is on these penalties.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: And obviously, everyone's gonna point to you know the uh the avoidance of the silent count and remaining on the uh the the clap, but I I think this could be a positive moving forward, especially since you got the dub.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Like it was always it could this could serve it as a huge learning experience as well.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Like, obviously, the coaching staff is going to figure out how this will never happen again.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Like, we're gonna have a game plan to make sure this is mitigated moving forward.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Like you said, we probably won't play in a stadium that will bring the same sort of loudness that Salt Lake City did.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, the only one that I would think it would be would be um Manhattan, but like you said, it's a mess in Manhattan right now, so it probably won't be the case.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Um, so dude, I'm choosing to use this as a learning experience rather than a true criticism because it's just I cannot find a way to harp on these boys, you know, because that's I really I think that's the only thing plays where that pinfalls you had 14 penalties for 122 yards.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: You turn the ball over twice, and you still won 34 to 10 against the top 16 team in the country.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: That shows you how good this team is.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: It really is.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm I came away from this game so high on what we can accomplish this year, and we knew that was gonna be the case if we were to even win this game at all, but in the dominant fashion, that fourth quarter taking over, scoring 21 straight points was unbelievable.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: I I I I couldn't have expected that.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I and dude, I think if if those penalties weren't a constant throughout the first half, I think that we would have launched off earlier than we did.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: I think we would have packed the game up by the halftime with with with the way we were performing, with the way our defense was out playing them.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: I really think we could have been up three or four scores when halftime came around had we not constantly killed a drive with a penalty.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: And but like we like you just said, I mean, in the fourth quarter, we grabbed the steering wheel and floor it right over them, flatten them.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Like they're the the fans are leaving the stadium well before the final whistle.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: So it's it was just utter domination from the boys in the red and black, the better red and black.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Um and dude, it's just it's hard to understate what this victory means for Joey McGuire and his coaching staff as well.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Like our obviously, hats off to the players, but our coaches got them prepared.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: They were ready to play.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: And all and all on all facets and all lines, too.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Because I mean he had your backup quarterback ready to go.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Like he didn't come in and play scared, he came in and took over the game.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: And that's just incredibly impressive from uh obviously the young quarterback, but you have to give some a tip of the hat to Leftwich because he's obviously spending time with Hammond to make sure he's comfortable in that position as well.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: So just our coaching staff, dude.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: I want to hear your champagne popping for them.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: You got anything, any nice things to say?
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, I have every nice thing to say in the world about both of them.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: I thought Mac drew up some incredible plays that really caught that Utah defense off.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: That is a good Utah defense.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: And we managed to break away.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: I think of that first play, that first drive with Jacoby, uh, when Barron was backing up, threw it to him.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: It was technically a screen pass as he got back to the line of scrimmage.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: Some of the Utah fans were complaining about an illegal block downfield.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: But since it's a screen pass and he caught it behind the line of scrimmage, it was completely legal what Terrence Carter did.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: And he got that ball to Jacoby in space and he just made it happen.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: And that's what Jacoby Williams can do.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: And that's something that Mac Leftwitch realizes get the ball in your playmaker's hands with some space, and you're gonna do some great things.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: And he did, and he started off that was an elite first drive after you know, we were third and five pretty quickly, and we made it happen, got all the way down in in their end zone, and then we eventually scored on a Cam Dickey run.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: But the he also drew up one the Terrence Carter touchdown was incredible because he set up the fake screen, completely threw Utah off and found a wide open TC in the back corner, and and Will Hammond put it right on the money.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: He put a bunch of passes right on the money.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: So sure did.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: Yes, coordinators to coaching.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: This team was 100% prepared and ready to go.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: I I couldn't ask for any more, and I just have full faith in these coordinators that Joey McGuire has hired and Joey to have everybody ready.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Dude, I'm glad he brought up the running backs.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: You know, I I came into this game concerned about the running back play just simply because they haven't really been tested yet.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: They haven't gone up against a real defense that can really throw them to the ground yet.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: But Jacoby set the tone for the game.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Like that play was huge for morale of both the the team and the fans watching at home and obviously in the stadium as well.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Um, just and obviously Dickie kept finding the end zone, man.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: And that la that last touchdown from him was like a ghost coming from the grave and just sneaking right on in, man.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: It was awesome.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: So it I just want to I I I know I criticized the running back room a little, probably a little too rough just due to their untestedness, and plus me just trying to find something wrong with this team.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Um, but dude, they really shut me up.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: I just I think lap left which really sees them as, you know, not necessarily as do-it-all kind of guys, but understands how to use their weapons in the right way.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: And I was I was pretty confident in Jacoby Williams after watching these first three games, just because you can see that big playability from him and the shiftiness and the speed and the strength, even for a guy his size, that he's just gonna make it happen.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: So he's gonna be your big play guy.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: I came in or I came out of the Utah game so impressed with Cam Dickey because not only just his touchdown run where he escaped two Utah defenders and you thought he was completely down, but he just managed to squeeze his way out of it, spin out, and then score for the dagger touchdown, but he was efficient all game long.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, an eight-yard run here when you needed it, a big three-yard run for a first down.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: He proved to me that he can absolutely be a guy.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: And I'm not comparing him to Taj Brooks, but you can see that same kind of patience that Taj had when he ran, where that Cam Dickey is showing you.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: He is looking to see what's available to him, and then he takes off or he makes a move and he realizes, hey, this is not gonna be a big play, but I'm gonna just ram my way for three positive yards.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: He's he's not a negative play guy, and I'm not seeing that from Cam Dickey.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: So I I came away very, very impressed with him.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, dude.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and obviously, you know, I know I know we kind of slid off it already, uh, but I I did just want to touch on uh the coordinators one more time.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Uh and dude, I just I I wouldn't get to say anything about Shield Wood yet, and but I know I know we kind of just talked about defense and I don't want to waste too much more time on it.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: I just I I don't know, older tech fans could probably correct us, but I think as you and I being fans, and I know it's not that early and I mean not that far into the season, but have you seen a more complete Texas Tech team like on both sides of the ball?
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: I really feel like we're playing complete football, complimentary football, and I think so much of that is due to that really intense uh balding guy in the sunglasses on the sideline and the uh the the guy with the the cool guy in the in the beard on the other side, you know.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Like it's I really feel like those two are just really making some peanut butter and jelly over there in Lubbock, dude.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: I don't want to take anything away from these coordinators because what they've done is been phenomenal so far.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: I don't know if any of these coordinators prior to them have had the talent that this team does have.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: So uh I on the offensive side, of course, but you know, for sure, for sure, absolutely.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: But defensively, we have not seen a uh roster as deep as this team is defensively, and so yes, Shield Wood is he started you know from third base, I think, with having the talent on this team, but he has absolutely done the job and he's keeping these guys motivated.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: That's half the freaking job, is getting these guys to go out there and play hard for them.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: And uh and and you he's definitely got an older group, you know, so it's it's pretty easy to uh tell you know Cole Wisneski, who's been in college football for six years, Jacob Rodriguez, who's in his sixth year, who has been at Texas Tech, Lee Hunter, who's going into his final year, you know, Romelo High, David Bailey, these are guys that have been great in college football already, and now they're all just coming together.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: So again, nothing to take away from Shield Wood or Mac Lefwich.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: They are doing a damn good job with a really good roster right now.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, dude.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: And I I I just I just want to I just want to highlight them because whenever you're listening to national podcasts, I know we are you and me, we're on that same level as you know, CBS and and and on three and all that.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: I I get that.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: But um, whenever you're listening to them, you know, you you hear them just confetti those guys because they're they're always talking about how these are two dudes who could be coaching anywhere, but they're coaching at Texas Tech, you know what I mean?
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: So it's we're really we really got a good set there.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: That's that's actually a point that I wanted to bring up with you is is the national attention now that Texas Tech is receiving, because uh we do listen to the national pods, we like to hear Texas Tech's name on these national pods.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: It doesn't happen very often, and now you get a big rank win, you get big noon, and now everybody's talking about you all of a sudden.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: And it's kind of funny seeing the national media guys that actually know what they're talking about when it comes to Texas Tech, and the ones that really don't, because you know, we love our guy Shaehan with CBS, he knows exactly what he's talking about, made a trip out the Lubbock this summer, wrote a great article.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: Max Olson is a guy who cares about Big 12 football.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: I was listening to Ryan Rosillo, who I love uh his podcast, but uh for various reasons NBA, NFL, all that stuff.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: He does talk college football and he has Bruce Feldman on, who is a college football guy.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: But you can tell these dudes do not pay attention to Texas Tech.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: And they're like, okay, out of nowhere, Texas Tech.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: If you're paying any attention at all to what this team was doing in the offseason, you would understand where this came from.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and yes, we paid a lot of money for the roster.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: A lot of teams are paying a lot of money for their roster right now, but all of a sudden we're the ones being talked about as, you know, pay pay for talent, pay for play, whatever.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: And Ohio State's doing the same damn thing, you know, Notre Dame's doing the same UT is doing the same thing.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: So I I just find it funny because I I I was listening to Rasillo and Bruce Feldman brought up the Matador Club.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: He called it the Red Raider, Red Matador Raider Club or something like that, because he doesn't know what he's talking about.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: Um, and he was like, they went all in this year and they have a small window.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, brother, we have the best recruiting class in the 2027 high school class right now.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: Like, this is not just a one-year deal right now.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech is here to make noise, to be at the top, and to stay at the top.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: So this isn't just a one and done.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I really like that, dude.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: I I think that's a good point, you know.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Where I'm it's obviously after a big win, I'm much, as you're saying, I'm much more likely to tune into these national pods than I would be normally.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Um, normally I just kind of keep it pretty local and listen to Big 12 focus stuff.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Um, but um, but you make a great point.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Whatever you're listening, it's just really fun to listen to.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Like you said, listening to the guys that know what they're talking about and hearing people who have absolutely no idea what's going on.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Um, and like you said, it's it's the big difference is obviously like, do they know what Joey McGuire is all about or do they not?
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Like I really just like he's this high school coach that coached for 20 years or whatever and was at Baylor for a time, and then all of a sudden he's at tech.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: And it's like, okay, you you clearly haven't done your research yet.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: And I think you know, I was I was gonna bring this up at the kind of the wrap-up of the game, but let's go ahead and talk about the our our captain here.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Um, he is the lightning rod to what you were just talking about because our vertical alignment within Texas Tech Athletics right now could not be more aligned, like we could not be straighter up and down in true cohesiveness.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Because from our boosters to our fans to our team, we are all on the same page.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: There is no conflict, there's no storm clouds over this program right now.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: And obviously, it's helpful when you're undefeated.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Whatever you have um your your your your boon pickens, your mega booster uh Cody Campbell at the game, you know, dapping up our head coach right after, and just you know, all smiles and and ready to continue to support this, and then obviously College Athletics as a whole, which I admire him for.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Um it's not just about tech with him, but it and like you said, dude, it's what what's happening here is Joe McGuire is officially has officially built a culture.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Like this is a culture team now.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Um it's this what what we see is the product of Joey Maguire, and of course, and all the people around him who allow it to happen or been and built a foundation for it to happen.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Um the biggest criticisms of me see of tech right now, you've touched on it, was TechTech buys their players, they don't recruit.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: And that that narrative needs to die because that is one and the same now.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: That is recruiting.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: You are paying them to come, but players are not robots, they're not just there to receive a check.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: These guys want to win too.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: They can recognize the opportunity to be great, get their draft talk up, and win championships with a team while getting paid to do so.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: That's what NFL players do.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: So I don't understand why uh it's a criticism to Texas Tech.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: It's obviously it's criticism to Texas Tech because we're a have not, and no one likes to see us do well unless you kind of unless you're kind of all about that jazz.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: But whatever Ohio State does it, it's like, well, it's just big boys being big boys.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: So they just a lot of people just hate um the the they hate the underdog.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: It's also quoted, stay the same.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: It's also most of Texas Tech has realized this by now.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: The amount of vetting and the hard work that James Blanchard and his team does in the offseason to get to this point, to get those players who are talented and are you know hot commodities in the transfer portal, but are also willing to buy into a culture goes so far.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh the work that he does, there's a reason Notre Dame wanted to hire him away because he is so essential to getting to this point right now.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: And Joey Maguire is the perfect guy to bring in a guy in who has not been in instilled in the culture, maybe was on a losing program, maybe uh you know the talent was there, but it just didn't show it.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: But it's so easy to buy into what he's trying to do, and what he was doing the past three years at Texas Tech, you never saw the locker room fall apart at all.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, you saw some bad losses, you saw some some games that we, you know, lost by way more than we should have, or anything like that.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: But there was never a point where this locker room fell apart, or Joey was never a guy that they still believed in till the very end of the season.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: This is different because he's got talent now.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's got an incredible amount of talent on this roster, and he has brought everybody together like this.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: And again, Steam hasn't felt a lot of adversity so far.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: They've felt some, they've seen their starting quarterback go down twice now in the first four games of the season, but you haven't really faced, you know, like a fourth quarter you're down, you need to go get a touchdown or anything like that.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: I don't know if they will.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: I hope they don't, but we'll see how they respond then.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: And again, maybe I'm getting way too ahead of myself, but right now, Texas Tech has shown me that they are a team that is fully invested and fully together, to your point, from the top to the bottom.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: We have like the best of both worlds right now, and Joey McGuire might be the archetypal head coach for a program like Texas Tech that other other programs in our zone of uh of of I don't know what to say, uh, level.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: I I really I I hope you get what I'm trying to say.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: Or I'm trying to replicate.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Um, and what the way the way I say that is because he's we're able to, we have the money to get superstars, like super good talent to Texas Tech, like real rock stars, NFL Sunday kind of guys, but we have a head coach that can integrate them into this unified culture.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like it's not the them show, it's still Texas Tech.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's still about the W.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: It's not about the player, it's not about the ego.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: He's able to blend these guys up into the Joey Maguire Red Raider team and not just be the you know the uh the lead hunter experience.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's just it's it's truly a unified operation from top to bottom, and it's full of damn good players.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Like we it it's seriously, this mercenary shit needs to die.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's obviously this is obviously not the case.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: These guys are obviously fighting hard for each other.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: You've seen it both ways, though.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: You've seen last year's Florida State, where it was a team of mercenaries transfers that that that they just did not mesh together, and they lost early on in the season and they never recovered.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: So Joey's not experiencing that right now.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: Tech is not experiencing that right now.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, yeah, as I keep saying, there's still a lot of season to go, but right now things are looking really good.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: And I think after this big win against the Utah on the road, uh, that was a statement game for what this team can accomplish.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: So I am after last week, man, I am that much more high on what this team can accomplish.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: But I can't believe we've gone this far into the podcast without talking about this quarterback thing.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'd love to say we can't leave the game without talking about that.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: We can't, we can't do it.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: And it's been a it's been a hot topic on tech Twitter, message boards, all that kind of stuff.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Will Hammond came into this game and was dynamite.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: He was electric.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: He was, I think he finished what 13 to 16, two touchdowns, led four scoring drives from when he came into the game.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: He was unbelievable.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: I don't want to take anything away from what Will Hammond did on the road against a ranked team coming in for an injured quarterback as the second string.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: Barron played well in this game.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: I I know that that's maybe not the first thing that people are gonna look at when they see the stat line, or maybe you know, when they just consider Barron as a whole and how he's always injured and yada yada yada, but Barron played well.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: Those two interceptions, yeah, they were a little underthrown.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: One took a bad bounce off of the helmet, the other the the safety caught it.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: The other one I thought Coy could have fought a little harder for, but both of them were really kind of 50-50 balls, and you saw some of Will Hammond through some 50-50 balls that just our receivers ended up with.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, Reggie was great when Will was in the game, he threw one to Terrence Carter on a crucial third down.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Will Hammond did that was an absolute 50-50 ball that our receiver ended up coming up with it.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: So I I think the two interceptions are a little overblown for what Barron was doing.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: I thought he was great on third downs.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: I thought he extended plays.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: The one thing that Barron Morton doesn't do well is know how to go down and know how to take hits because him getting injured was 100% his fault.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Learn to slide, dude.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Learn to slide.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: It's not you're only hurting the team by you trying this tough guy stuff of just not going down, not learning the technique to go down.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: You need to stay on the on the field, man.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: Like that's the one thing with Baron Morton that I need him to figure out because he can be an awesome quarterback for this team, and I just need him to do that.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I I'm totally with you, dude.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Um, it's obviously the camp that people are in with more with uh with Hammond is riding the hot hand, you know, and just just playing that that fire game of look how look how he just came in and blew Utah up and just put to put the game away.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Um and we clearly have quarterback depth.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: We knew that last year, but it's it's it's clear as day now that our QB room is awesome.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Like we have two elite guys in that room right now.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Um, but I'm with you, dude.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: It's they they they can't they play two different games.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Like, I want to be fair to Morton and Hammond.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: Like Morton came in at the beginning of the game when the crowd is the most fired up, their defense is fresh and ready to go, their game plan is against Baron Morton.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: So it's it's hard to completely do apples to apples comparisons between them because Hammond comes in at the end.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, they're not prepared for a Hammond, they're not, they're not prepared for his dual threat ability.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: The crowd isn't nearly as fired up, um, and their defense is pretty worn out.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: So it's just they did come in at different points.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: So I do want to do that.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: And I don't want to take away from Hammond, he still got the job done.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: There's also another part of this where I actually counted 15 penalties, so I think they may have missed one because I just rewatched the game and I wrote down every penalty.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: 12 of the 15 penalties were when Baron Morton was starting as your quarterback, and a lot of those were false starts, were face masks, were holding, were illegal motion, stuff that not necessarily on him.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a lot of it was the silent count, Utah being loud, everything like that.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: But and they definitely got quieter, you know, as we started scoring more and more with Will.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: But that matters.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: 12 of your 15 penalties happened when Baron Morton were was on the field starting and playing for you.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: So again, not taking anything away from what Will Hammond did.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: That dude controlled that game from the minute he got on the field and was electric and was fantastic.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: But Joey McGuire said it today on the podcast.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: Baron Morton's the guy.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: There's no QB controversy here.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: We love that Will Hammond is fantastic.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: We love that he's our our guy for the future.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: We love that he can come in in these situations when Baron Morton gets hurt and comes in and runs the table against the Utah team.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: But Baron Morton's the quarterback, and he's going to continue to be the quarterback.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: And I am 1000% just fine with that.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, and Barron Morton is the captain of your team.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: You know, what are you gonna do?
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Bench the captain of the team?
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: What is that gonna do for team morale?
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: You know, first of all.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: Yep, and uh second of all, Barron Morton is a fifth-year senior, and he's been with TechStech the whole time.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: He's got the game experience that's gonna carry you through most games that just a freshman just won't have.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: A freshman will just make more mistakes just because he's a younger guy with left less real-time experience.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Practice is great, but it's not game experience.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: So that's what and that's what Barron Morton has.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: And Barry Morton has a canon, he has a better arm than Morton than Hammond does um at this point in time.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: So I I'm with you, dude.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: I I'm with you on on playing Barron Morton.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: I will say though, like anything Barry Morton does is gonna be more criticized.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: Like, people are gonna be a little much more critical of him at this point.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be a little more under a microscope, uh, with everything he does, just because I mean, it's the joke is over and over again that the most popular guy on the team is the backup quarterback.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: And this this this is not gonna help that case.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Like that noise will be loud from our side over him.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: So I hope he can silence it and just go out there and play his game.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: And honestly, I think that'll be a motivator for him.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, of all guys, some people would take that bad.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: Some quarterbacks would that are a little more egotistical than what Baron Morton is, are gonna take that the wrong way and go look at a couple tweets from a couple dudes on tech Twitter that are saying, start Hammond, what is Baron Morton doing?
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: Bench ham benchmorton, you know, all that sort of stuff that we've seen from every fan base.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: I'm not just calling out Texas Tech fan base here, but um yeah, it's yeah, I think it'll be a motivator for Barron to continue to do what he can do.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: And I 100% believe in him.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: I I think we would have absolutely won that game if Barron was still playing um throughout the rest.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: But yeah, man, uh huge, huge shout out to Will Hammond.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: That dude was insane.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: I I did not I didn't expect that.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: I didn't expect, I don't think anybody expected Will Hammond to dot after dot after dot after dot.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, you could count on his three incompletions.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: One was a bad throw, and it was just the opposite side shoulder on the on the Terrence Carter would-be touchdown right before he scored three straight times.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, I mean, Hammond was awesome.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to have three years with this guy.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, like that's that's nuts that we're gonna have three years in a row with him if things go as they should, you know.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and I tell you what, dude, after learning, you know, after learning that he is a Mormon, you know, and travel traveling to Utah, uh, he probably grew up a BYU fan.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: And I gotta say, we are very lucky that we have a staff like ours who was able to lock him down early.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Because could you imagine a BYU swooped in earlier in his recruitment?
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: He'd probably be a cougar.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: A lot of teams wanted him, and he said he had like 30 family members at this Utah game just because they live in the area, so he's got those ties to to Utah and the state.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: But yeah, man, it's uh I don't we're we're happy that he ended up in Texas.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know how he ended up in Texas, uh, but you know, Joey did his recruiting magic.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: You you just know that that hippo grew up wanting to beat Utah in that stadium, too.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: So, like talk about a dream come true for that kid.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: So just like he was the MVP of the game.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: I I think that's easy, and obviously got all sorts of national honors, like player uh TB of the week, offensive player of the week, um, and well deserved.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: That kid's gonna be a star at Tech Tech for the next three years.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 100%.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: And just just just one more thing before we move on.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: Sure, it is so good to know if the worst does happen with Barron Morton.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: I don't think we have to give up on our dreams.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: Like we don't have to recalibrate too much.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: And I think at the beginning of the season, we we kept saying, um, especially you, you really kept leaning on this.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Like, we go as far as Morton takes us.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: I really think that you know, if if Barron hits down, yeah, if if he goes down, I I think that we could feel much more comfortable uh moving forward with him as the play caller.
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: Um, he just needs to learn to slide, please, Baron.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Just slide.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, this whole this whole run for eight yards and get rammed by he got rocked like three times this game and hard.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: And so I you're just not gonna survive a season when you get that happening to you all the time.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: But yeah, Baron.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Um Steven, the funniest moment in this game was Joel Clatt saying that Stone Harrington.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: I was just about to bring it up.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Okay, cool.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: I was like, I didn't want to move on before we touched on it, dude.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: What did I say last week?
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: What did I say last week?
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Stone Harrington's gonna be the guy.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: Stone Harrington is going to be the guy because he's got the biggest leg.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: And Joel Clatt goes out there and says, I don't think he's got the leg, Gus.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: And Gus Johnson with the call of the year.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Take that, Joel Clack.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: That was awesome.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Dude, that was so funny.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: And geez, what a what a job sealer for Harrington, dude.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: Like, obviously, you're gonna be the big kicker moving forward.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Um, in such a clutch moment, dude.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: And I think we're all like, wow, he's we're really gonna go for this, you know.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: I think we're all looking around going, really.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, dude, let's go.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: Props to you, Steven.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: You said you don't you have no uh concerns about special teams, and that really came true on Saturday.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I mean the punting was pretty good too.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: So like it was it was the special teams, all in all, was great.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Burgess had a huge one where he locked one in at the one, I think.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: We kept getting him back, dude.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: No, I'm I'm huge, very pleased after the first true test for those guys to hit some big field goals.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Um, it was weird.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: At the the last extra point of the game, they threw in Bellumfon, and I was like, all right, what are we doing here?
- 38:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, stop this.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: You're they're gonna throw in Stone Harrington if it's a big kick and they need it, he's he's gonna be the guy that they throw in.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: But yeah, the the stones on that guy to uh to do what he's doing.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 50 yard 58-yard field goal was was huge, but huge game, man.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Utah, I mean, the first true test, thrilled with how it ended up, thrilled, looking forward.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we're very high on this team as we're talking about them now, but I don't see how you can't be.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Just again, it's the that was probably the best win I've seen us pull off, especially on the road in our fandom.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: Just the other dominance.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: We need to again.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: We need to give the the prefix that we got to tech in 2014 and we were not there for the Leech era, we were not there for even early Tupperville.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: So we are there's a lot of good tech football, guys.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and but and in our defense, we're almost 30, so it's not like we're new to this, you know.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: It's we're not exactly the young fans.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but we weren't really fans until like 18, you know.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know, I know, but uh still.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: Um I think anyway, but and it's really funny that Utah has still not won a Big 12 game at home.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: That's hilarious, it's very funny.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Well, that's that's that's pretty dang funny.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: So uh again, I what do you think do you think we're gonna see them again?
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: You think they're gonna be in the Big Twelve Championship or no?
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: I don't know, man.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: They uh Dampier was disappointing.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: That dude, and granted, he's going up against a really good defense.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, but he was apparently hurt.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: Well, they Whittingham was out there fibbing and not following the rules, being a naughty little boy.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: That's what Whittingham does.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: He I actually kind of like that move of just like, oh, you want an injury report?
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: Everybody's questionable.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: F you like I like the move, but yeah, I mean he said Dampier didn't he didn't practice Wednesday, Thursday, and then or he didn't practice Tuesday Wednesday, partially practice Thursday.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: These guys take hits, like they're gonna be partially injured.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't think Devin Dampier looked like hobbled or anything.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: No, he was just bad, he's just bad, and the offensive line was not great.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: But again, this is more positive towards Texas Tech than negative on Utah, I think.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: And obviously, the AP voters, I was just about to bring up Texas Tech number 12 in the in the latest AP poll, which is the highest we've been since 2013.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: But Utah now completely out of the AP poll because they lost to Texas Tech.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: So I'm rooting for Utah moving forward.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: I want them to do well, I want them to continue to win games and show that they're a good team, so that at the end of the year we look at this and say, hey, Texas Tech actually dominated a really good team in Utah.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: So we'll just have to see how they end up.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: But yeah, Dempier was not inspiring.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: They they have offensive questions, but I think that was the talk from the start.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: I that defense is legit.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: You know, it took us, it took us forever to get points on that board, you know, and into any real consistency at the end, too.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: So it that that defense is legit, and obviously defense is gonna carry you further than an offense.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: So that that that they're I think they're gonna do just fine in the Big 12 moving forward.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know if we're gonna see them again.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's again, you don't want to overreact this early in the season, but some other Big 12 teams are really starting to pop off, dude.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: Like I to TCU is really starting to throw some things together, BYU is looking strong.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: Um, and obviously Iowa State is a uh a consistent tank right now.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: So uh it'll be interesting to see.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: Uh you want to you want to talk about the Big 12 real quick?
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: Um I I just want to say like this Utah win in the here in the Big 12 picture, this Utah win, I think it gives you a lot of breathing room.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: I because you know if you're going to try to find losses to make yourself seem realistic whenever we talk about Texas Tech's chances in this year, you would have marked this as an L.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: And now you got away with now, you didn't get away with it.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, you dominated, but now you got out of Salt Lake City with a W.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: You can look down the schedule and be like, look, if we inevitably drop one, we're not already in the hole 0-2.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: We're not in the hole with two, we're just in the hole with one.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: So it I really think your dreams of going far into the postseason here, or obviously the 12th championship, got a lot brighter because you got a real tough one theoretically out of the way.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: These next two games, I did not think were going to be two games that you were more scared of when you looked at this prior to the season.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: But going to Houston is a big one.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: Playing Kansas at home is a big one.
- 43:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know Kansas lost to Missouri, but Missouri's a pretty decent team.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, they're four and oh right now, they're looking pretty good.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: So uh Houston looking like a defensive, uh, a really good defensive team with you know sparingly decent offense.
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: Kansas, I like these next two games are gonna prove a lot.
- 43:42SPEAKER_02: And if you can go three and oh in this stretch, dude, you have Oklahoma State, you have Kansas State, you have UCF, you have West Virginia.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: Like wow.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: It's all in front of you, man.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: And BYU now is ranked twenty five.
- 43:57SPEAKER_02: So you actually you have to host them at home and we'll see how they.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: carry on with a with a true freshman quarterback as the season goes and they start playing better competition.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: Arizona State got a big win in Waco.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: So you know they're looking to be what we thought they were at least uh they still lost to Mississippi State.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: So Utah I still think right now Utah is the best team on this schedule and you got past them.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: But yeah it's not like you have just simply cupcakes moving forward but you definitely have a manageable schedule for sure.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah and I mean uh whenever you first saw the schedule at the beginning of the year like you said it looked easier.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: Now it is looking a little trickier I would say um and the Big 12 is looking stronger than it did week one so as as teams are starting to put things together.
- 44:42SPEAKER_02: So uh absolutely dude I mean I think Utah's still a good guess uh so the Big 12 though the Big 12 as a whole though I think is leading up to an undefeated Iowa State undefeated Texas tech.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: And I'm way ahead of it right now.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: I keep saying that but I don't I don't want to be like too far above my skis here but Iowa State's looking good Tex looking good they don't play each other that looks like two undefeated teams that are going to meet in the Big 12 championship and then hopefully maybe a two-bid league.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: That I was about to say that's actually the best case scenario for both teams to play each other undefeated.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: And the good news is that could absolutely happen without hindering each other because you're if you lose to an undefeated champion yeah you're there's just no excuse for the playoff community to leave you both to leave one of you out.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: Just no excuse.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: And we'll have to see how the rest of it all plays out right I mean Iowa State I you know Iowa State plays TCU BYU Arizona State so they have a pretty similar path that we do in terms of like caliber of opponents you know they have a Cincinnati they have a Colorado they have an Oklahoma State on their on their remaining schedule just like we have a UCF West Virginia Oklahoma State all that so I don't know if these teams are what they're cracked up to be that that should be what it looks like after four weeks of play to be what it's going to be in Arlington.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: Absolutely and I think the good news is I think a lot of uh ball knowers out there are starting to peg the Big 12 as a two-bid league especially with the ACC tanking like it is the ACC they're so bad.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: It's bad dude and I this isn't even just like the interconference rivalry with each other is they were really they were really relying on Clemson.
- 46:19SPEAKER_02: And now now Florida State has ended up being kind of what Clemson was supposed to be.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: True they're they're really and Miami's awesome Miami's what they're number two in the country right now but outside of those two man it's uh it's pretty bleak.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: Absolutely dude so I mean whenever you have UCF blowing uh North Carolina out it's just it's it's dire over there dude and the American is just popping up and punching people in the face.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: So the American's actually looking pretty good.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: American actually it's it is it is it's it's certainly the fifth best league.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: So by the way one maybe two in we'll see SMU has now lost two G5 programs in the Big 12 got it got it got it dude it's it's really funny that they lost to both Baylor and TCU but dude the best best case it's such crap that TCU and SMU are canceling the series and it's TCU doing that.
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: I know it's Sonny Drap dude Sonny how did you you could have been like your dad I it's just you know like that would have been a marquee Big 12 ACC rivalry game especially now that both teams are good you know or at least solid now every year it's just like come on man that's that's weak we need more rivalries not less in a sport um so speaking of our rivals man uh that one over the Red River Oklahoma State you got any words to say I I was right and I was right before they even lost to Oregon 69 to three whatever it was um they're horrible they're really really bad they're yeah they're worse than the conference oh yeah I mean by far you can't lose to Tulsa on your home field and be expected to like be all and and also UCF you know they at least I know North Carolina's not good but still beating them they're undefeated Arizona's undefeated these are two teams that you thought were going to be at the bottom and it's look at it's like K-State and Oklahoma State right now for well at least with Kansas State they have pieces oh dude right now Kansas State if Kansas State Oklahoma State played next week Kansas State would kill them by you think so 15 yeah this 100 the K-State UCF game is intriguing me this weekend I definitely want to tune into that that'll be interesting that'll show where they both kind of are but yeah they're the one constant in the Big 12 this year is that Oklahoma State is terrible.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Is Gundy fired?
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: Is he cooked?
- 48:48SPEAKER_02: Yes he's so cooked they're gonna let him coach out the rest of the year because he's my Gundy and he's been there 20 years or whatever but yeah you you don't lose to Tulsa at home for the first time since what the 50s 51 AM yeah you're when you were Oklahoma AM you no this team is so talent deficient right now there is nobody that is inspiring for Oklahoma State even last year when they were bad they still had Ollie Gordon and they still had you know a def I think they had a pretty good defensive end but the looking at this team it is just there's nothing there and there's no motivation.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: So Gundy's far behind the times and uh and my man is cooked.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: You know it's we just talk about how at Texas Tech we have vertical alignment like perfectly Oklahoma State is the opposite yeah like it is they are shattered as an athletic department over there and it's been shattered for a while I just think it's they're bad in everything.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah basketball's awful football's awful but I don't even know if they have a decent baseball team they're usually good at baseball but they're usually pretty good but like I I they're uh they'll always have wrestling I guess yeah but no man Oklahoma State has completely gone the wrong direction.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: Yep and they were like a favorite to you know establish themselves as a top dog in this league uh post out so it's it's uh it it's it's gonna be fascinating to watch and the good news for Oklahoma State though is this is actually one of the coaching cycles where they have a lot of great options like obviously they have their eyes on that uh alum offensive coordinator where is it what's it what's his name Zach uh Robinson yeah yeah the Falcons coordinator um is like apparently the number one pick but dude they have they have uh they have Kinney they have trailer they have Morris who's kicking ass at UNT right now so it's there's a lot of Texas G5 teams that are awesome right now G5 with up and coming coaches could they steal our buckle from OU the OC that they just took from Wazoo why couldn't they?
- 50:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know they they got some options that's a better job I mean but the thing is head coach yeah yeah at Oklahoma State yeah but the thing is is this Oklahoma State's in for a rebuild like obviously things can happen quicker now with the the transfer portal and IL and all that but the things are just so broke in there it's gonna take a little bit of time you're gonna have to give a coach some time to put things together kind of like we did with Joey but Joey I mean immediately kind of kind of got it going but still I'll throw in another name that I don't think is going to happen but will cause a stir how about Cliff Kingsbury being the head coach of Oklahoma State now no way dude no no way I I don't know I don't see that happening no I don't think so either I think he's gonna stay NFL yeah and A for his mental health but B it's just like look I know he's really handsome but he can only fall up so much he can't keep getting away with it and I look good as a coordinate he's gonna and but we've said this for years.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: We've said cliff is a great coordinator he's not a good head coach and yeah it still remains true 100% he cannot he cannot be a power level head coach in the college football in a way yeah um all right we're we're bringing an episode next week to you guys we have a bye week this week so we're gonna just enjoy football what it's gonna be great we're 4-0 we're coming off a dominant win in Salt Lake City and we can just enjoy football this weekend without being crushed or anything of that nature.
- 52:13SPEAKER_01: So uh we play Houston the following Saturday it is a night game it's gonna be fun get your tickets if you are you know willing to travel or live in the Houston area um and let's take over that stadium but we'll talk about Houston next week um Tristan any more points before we get to song of the week Steven this was one of the more fun episodes to record dude you and I have been hosting this podcast through some dire straits and I just gotta say dude it's it feels so good to be a good team today uh dude and I wore my red and black proud to work today and chatted up with everybody and everyone knows everyone's excited you know you know it's it's actually there's a lot of fun going around in the state in general like I said like I brought up UNT like their alum are very excited like that and dude it's just it just feels so good to matter again in this sport and especially a sport that's just so important to Texas and to Texas tech and it's just I'm I'm feeling so good dude cloud nine feels good feels good very excited to be at the Kansas game in Lubbock in a couple weeks but let's finish her off here with a song of the week go ahead Steven I got a meme song of the week if that's allowed it's always we won this game because of the now Tulsa burner Pete Stash from from Twitter and his blockbuster hit Dust of Lubbock so I'm going with Dust of Lubbock by Pete Stash Oklahoma State now Tulsa burner on X.
- 53:48SPEAKER_02: It's on Spotify from the Dust of Lubbock that takes brand Cody Campbell money left the rest of them by that build unleash all different design turn that red dirt playable to a damn gold that was electric that was an electric tweet that was that was I think this I think this whole song is AI but I'm all absolutely yeah no and this is the one time where I'll be like it's fine we'll let it happen that song rocked it does big fan of Beatstash he's over there like my team stinks let's just hype up everybody else I think it's hilarious that he had to change his account to a Tulsa burner it is funny that's very funny.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: Great song of the week awesome video good luck trying to find that to get this on the pod I don't know what this I'm gonna use I don't know what we're gonna do here he might just I want you to wrap it if if if you can't find it no we're gonna we're gonna find a way outside of that but um all right man my song of the week is actually a good song uh well not that Pete Stash all all love and respect to Pete Stash but this is a real artist and not AI um this has been kind of the theme of what we've been talking about yeah we're awesome right now things are great we're on cloud nine but there's still a long way to go in this Big 12 season and in this college football season.
- 55:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah my song of the week is Miles to go by 49 Winchester.
- 55:19SPEAKER_02: That's a band that you introduced to me at some point within the last couple years was on this pod I'm sure but this is a great song by them good band um and there's still there's still a long way to go in this season for Texas Tech and so I think Joey's going to keep these guys motivated and we'll hopefully keep on rolling.
- 55:38SPEAKER_02: So that was miles to go 49 Winchester.
- 55:54SPEAKER_01: A great way to wrap it up dude I think you've tied it up perfectly with just I think this coaching staff is capable of key of the keeping the boys with their eyes on the ball you know and not getting distracted not letting the it get too loud and and just keeping the boat together dude 100% this was fun.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: I love recording episodes after we win big oh yeah we're gonna crush bye week dude don't worry the bye week is in hell right now with Texas Tech all right thank you all for listening you can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter Tristan's at Tristy Mick I'm at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez follow the pod on Twitter at talking tech pod we very much appreciate you guys listening and uh looking for a lot of good stuff ahead always wreck em tech wreck em tech uh wow first of all uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan uh their program tough guys just uh a lot of fun this is wild when I walked in and I knew this would be an awesome podcast and these guys have been tremendous I love you and I can't wait for this journey I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan this is incredible these guys have a passion and a love for this school
