- 0:20Speaker 1: My name's Anakara and Tommy Henrickson and we play in Crossbones.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Scully Beautiful.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Thanks for joining us this morning.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Thanks for having us.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Hi pleasure.
- 0:33Speaker 4: So Crossbone Skelly release your debut album, Evil Ward Machine
- 0:37Speaker 4: this Friday, November twenty second.
- 0:38Speaker 3: So it's been a bit of a long campaign.
- 0:41Speaker 4: So how's the feeling in the camp going into it
- 0:43Speaker 4: finally coming out?
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's been a long time coming.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It's been quite a while since it's been finished, and
- 0:51Speaker 1: to me, it feels like it's just a bunch of
- 0:55Speaker 1: excitement and release where it's like, finally people can hear this,
- 0:59Speaker 1: you know, Yeah, is it?
- 1:01Speaker 3: Is it? Like?
- 1:02Speaker 4: Is it frustrating in a white light sitting on the
- 1:04Speaker 4: psylon knowing how good the material is and then just
- 1:08Speaker 4: not being out to do anything with it.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Uh, frustrating is like a kind word.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Let's we've been sitting around waiting and uh, I don't
- 1:19Speaker 1: know what the weight was for. But you know, I
- 1:22Speaker 1: always look at it this way. It's the universe is waiting.
- 1:25Speaker 1: So it's the right time, right now, at the right moment,
- 1:28Speaker 1: So we go with it.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You know what I mean. It's not you could do
- 1:29Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:30Speaker 1: You just go with the flow, you know, but you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: we've been waiting and finally I'm glad that everyone could
- 1:35Speaker 1: hear it because it's a cool record. It's got a
- 1:37Speaker 1: lot of cool stuff on it. It's not just heavy
- 1:39Speaker 1: ac DC. It's got some weird twisting turns also.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Yeah, well on that subject, and you got under the
- 1:45Speaker 4: album in greater detail musically and what you're actually going
- 1:49Speaker 4: for with the sound, well.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Of course ac DC, you know a C d C.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Alex Harvey, let's see the scond pistols, a little bit
- 2:01Speaker 1: of craft work.
- 2:02Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It's like there's so many who there's so many elements
- 2:06Speaker 1: that I'm always like just because it's like in your DNA,
- 2:09Speaker 1: you know what I mean. It's like you're just born
- 2:10Speaker 1: with this stuff, and it's like you just throw it
- 2:14Speaker 1: in this splendor and you just see what comes out
- 2:16Speaker 1: and hopefully, you know, you get something.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Sometimes you get lucky, you know.
- 2:21Speaker 4: There's a long list of singles that have been released,
- 2:24Speaker 4: including Evil World Machine, There's Money, Sex and God, Everyone's
- 2:27Speaker 4: on Diet, I Am the Wolf, I'm Unbreakable, High on You,
- 2:31Speaker 4: and the Boom When the Booms. That's a lot of
- 2:33Speaker 4: songs to cover, does it come close to tapping into
- 2:36Speaker 4: a good sonic representation of the album.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Awesome, what do you think?
- 2:45Speaker 5: Yeah, But there's just it's funny because every song is
- 2:48Speaker 5: is so good and there's some tracks on there that
- 2:52Speaker 5: really are going to blow you away that that haven't
- 2:54Speaker 5: come out as a single. You know, for example, the Anita,
- 3:01Speaker 5: the Last Night on Earth, Misfits of the Universe, like
- 3:04Speaker 5: they're very powerful songs, very powerful.
- 3:07Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, seven singles then, right, like any band
- 3:12Speaker 4: that seven singles off an album, you know it's going
- 3:16Speaker 4: to be a bloody good album because that's a hard ratio.
- 3:19Speaker 2: That's really sweet. Uh. You know.
- 3:22Speaker 1: The thing is like I thought we had like thirteen singles,
- 3:25Speaker 1: but but it's just it's just funny because there's so
- 3:27Speaker 1: many songs. When you're picking this stuff and you put
- 3:30Speaker 1: on the record, you know, it's like where do we
- 3:32Speaker 1: want to turn over here instead of having it just
- 3:35Speaker 1: you know, it's good to have the bangers, but it's
- 3:37Speaker 1: also good to have those ones where you go, I
- 3:39Speaker 1: didn't know they could do that, you know, I don't
- 3:42Speaker 1: want to have any like, uh, there's no boundaries.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:45Speaker 1: It's sort of saying there's all like we're it's going
- 3:47Speaker 1: to sound like this, you know, I want to sound
- 3:50Speaker 1: When I'm thinking of this shit, it's like I'm thinking
- 3:53Speaker 1: like the Who when they do like, you know, won't.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Get fooled again, and then they go into It's.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Front and then you know, or Queen Radio Gaga, every
- 4:04Speaker 1: crazy little thing called love we Will Rock You. That's
- 4:07Speaker 1: the whole idea of this, you know what I mean,
- 4:09Speaker 1: David Bowie. It's like that type of stuff where I
- 4:12Speaker 1: don't want to be pigeonholed into having that certain sound.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I want to be able to cross the genres, you know.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And two of those songs feature guess artists.
- 4:21Speaker 4: You got I on You was got NICKI six from
- 4:23Speaker 4: What Lee Crew and The Boom When the Boom Fish
- 4:26Speaker 4: is still Calling from def Leppard. Say tell us how
- 4:28Speaker 4: they came to be involved with each song and what
- 4:30Speaker 4: they actually brought to each track.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Nicky six was up first because when I was speaking
- 4:37Speaker 1: when they brought this feature thing up, I'm old school.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And as soon as I heard like features are.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Like, what's that? You know?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Like, well, we want you to feature someone on your songs,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I was like, why I don't want anybody on the songs?
- 4:50Speaker 1: You know what I mean, I don't need anybody on
- 4:52Speaker 1: the songs. So I called up Nicky, and Nicky's a
- 4:56Speaker 1: great sound on board for me, and I said, I said, six,
- 4:59Speaker 1: what's this deal with this?
- 5:00Speaker 2: Each his stuff?
- 5:00Speaker 1: And he's like, well, it's like having a ballad like
- 5:02Speaker 1: in the eighties. He's like, it's something you gotta do,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and I went, why do I have to do it?
- 5:07Speaker 1: He's like, well, it's about algorithms and all this other
- 5:09Speaker 1: stuff in Spotify. And I'm not aware of any of
- 5:12Speaker 1: that stuff because I don't really when I buy a record,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I to go to the store, I go on iTunes.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I still buy records, which is funny.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And so Nicky said to me, He's like, you need
- 5:20Speaker 1: a band of scout, like a big presence.
- 5:22Speaker 2: So as soon as he said that, I went, well
- 5:25Speaker 2: how about you.
- 5:26Speaker 1: You know, why don't you play bass? I was like,
- 5:28Speaker 1: you know, I've been on tour you, I've seen you
- 5:30Speaker 1: play bass. A lot of people think you don't even
- 5:32Speaker 1: play bass. I was like, why don't you play bass
- 5:34Speaker 1: on a record? Let's put it on the fucking track
- 5:36Speaker 1: and we'll fly it up the flag pole. And he
- 5:38Speaker 1: did an amazing job, and all of a sudden he
- 5:40Speaker 1: took this track and then it sounded like Motley krue he.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Motleyized it. And then with Phil Colin.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Then I was like, you know, what if we're gonna
- 5:50Speaker 1: do this feature thing, what guitar players do I love?
- 5:53Speaker 1: Of course, I love Joe Perry, you know what I mean,
- 5:55Speaker 1: Jeff Beck, you know, and all these other cats. And
- 5:57Speaker 1: I was like, you know, it might be cool, maybe
- 5:59Speaker 1: film might be interested is because the cool thing when
- 6:01Speaker 1: you're on tour with Alice Cooper and the Vampires, you
- 6:03Speaker 1: get to meet people. Some people you connect with, some
- 6:06Speaker 1: people you don't feel I connected with.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So I called up Phil.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I said, hey, I got a track for you. You
- 6:11Speaker 1: want to throw a solo down on some little bits?
- 6:13Speaker 1: And Phil heard it, He's like, love it done. And
- 6:16Speaker 1: that's how we got Phil.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Really it was. It was like one of those things like,
- 6:19Speaker 2: oh cool, I was easy sweet.
- 6:22Speaker 4: And then the album starts with the title track amid
- 6:24Speaker 4: the sounds of there's pro swalking there, there's busts of
- 6:27Speaker 4: wind and then an announcement.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Of thought sort so what was the thought process? It's
- 6:31Speaker 3: a very it's a powerful way to start the album.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Right, And when was the last time you heard a
- 6:36Speaker 2: record start like that.
- 6:38Speaker 4: I don't think for a long time, right, especially with
- 6:41Speaker 4: the six minute track as well.
- 6:42Speaker 3: It was very brave, but it's very well done there,
- 6:46Speaker 3: you know.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I always look at it this way.
- 6:49Speaker 1: When we were putting that together, like I've always loved
- 6:52Speaker 1: the way on the Diamond Dogs record, David Bowie opened
- 6:55Speaker 1: up with future Legend And when when I heard that
- 6:59Speaker 1: intro you know, end in the years and at dusting
- 7:02Speaker 1: on set and they did, and I was like going, Oh,
- 7:04Speaker 1: that stuck with me since I was a kid. And
- 7:06Speaker 1: then when I heard Motley Crue do in the beginning
- 7:09Speaker 1: on a shout at the Devil record, I knew where
- 7:11Speaker 1: they got that idea from.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I was like, oh, they got that.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And then I was like, you know what, it would
- 7:15Speaker 1: be really cool if we had an intro that was
- 7:18Speaker 1: a combination of both of them, but we make it
- 7:20Speaker 1: like Crossbones Scully and we got like almost like also
- 7:24Speaker 1: like Pink Floyd, you know, like the machines, you know,
- 7:27Speaker 1: like something like that. I was thinking and then when
- 7:30Speaker 1: I put on the voice, that's when the whole thing
- 7:33Speaker 1: really came together. When I found that voice, because Johnny Depp,
- 7:36Speaker 1: he was going to be the voice of Scully, but
- 7:38Speaker 1: he was too busy doing all this stuff, and I
- 7:41Speaker 1: just found this Stephen Hawking app and I just put
- 7:44Speaker 1: it on and I typed it in, slowed the pitch
- 7:46Speaker 1: down in the process, and I just hit play, recorded
- 7:51Speaker 1: it and.
- 7:51Speaker 2: That was it.
- 7:52Speaker 1: It was one of those moments I went thank you, Universe.
- 7:56Speaker 1: It was that it was weird like that, you know.
- 7:59Speaker 3: That's weird. And we sort of touched on this a
- 8:02Speaker 3: few times.
- 8:02Speaker 4: But the album was produced by the legendary Mutt Langer
- 8:05Speaker 4: is famous for his work with Icy d C, amongst others.
- 8:08Speaker 3: There's more than the hint of Icy DC in the album.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Say how much of that was his influence and how
- 8:13Speaker 4: much of that was was natural?
- 8:17Speaker 1: His hit for Mutt Lang is the executive producer on
- 8:21Speaker 1: the record. That's what he always wanted to be stated
- 8:24Speaker 1: as the executive producer. H the guys who produced the
- 8:27Speaker 1: record is my dear friend Tommy Denander, who introduced me
- 8:30Speaker 1: to Mutt Lang and the music to Muttlang. And so
- 8:34Speaker 1: Tommy and myself called produced the record and we wrote
- 8:36Speaker 1: the songs and then when Mutt heard it, he got
- 8:40Speaker 1: it and then let me just write something down and.
- 8:43Speaker 2: He was.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Heard it called me up and he said, I think
- 8:47Speaker 1: there's something he and I'd like to take a crack
- 8:49Speaker 1: at this thing. I want to work on something. I
- 8:51Speaker 1: was like blown away. I saw a crying dude, like
- 8:53Speaker 1: a baby because I was like Mutt Lang, because we
- 8:56Speaker 1: were just saying, oh see, if you get Mutt Lang.
- 8:58Speaker 1: He's like, all right, I'll call him up, and Tommy
- 9:00Speaker 1: called him, and Muttline called me, and having him work
- 9:04Speaker 1: on it it's a dream come true because it's like,
- 9:06Speaker 1: all of those sounds is the sounds that I love
- 9:10Speaker 1: and always all of that stuff, the arrangements, the vocals,
- 9:13Speaker 1: that stuff that I'm trying to work out my whole
- 9:15Speaker 1: life to get, and all of a sudden I got
- 9:16Speaker 1: to work with the guy who actually did all that stuff,
- 9:20Speaker 1: and he's the greatest producer ever. And what I look
- 9:24Speaker 1: at is I don't care about selling records or anything.
- 9:28Speaker 2: We already won. We got Muttlined. No one could say that, you.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Know dance right.
- 9:33Speaker 4: And it's also very heavily guitar influenced album, mightn't I
- 9:37Speaker 4: guess that's pretty self expanitory.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, Tommy Denander, he did a wonderful
- 9:44Speaker 1: job on this record and he's an amazing guitar player,
- 9:48Speaker 1: incredible musician, and he really out did himself on this.
- 9:52Speaker 1: We had a great time doing it, and I got
- 9:54Speaker 1: to tell you it's like when I hear the guitar
- 9:56Speaker 1: parts in that record, Chris, it's like, it's the incredible
- 10:02Speaker 1: guitar parts, you know. And have Anna and Sam do
- 10:05Speaker 1: the tracks and play this stuff live with the with
- 10:09Speaker 1: the band, it's been a challenge, but they got to
- 10:11Speaker 1: tell you, man, they are nailing it. Because I was
- 10:13Speaker 1: worried because I knew the parts were intricate, and I
- 10:17Speaker 1: was thinking, I want to have young people in this band,
- 10:20Speaker 1: you know, and find young musicians, and the greatest thing
- 10:23Speaker 1: was finding Anna and Sam.
- 10:25Speaker 2: That could play the stuff at their age. You know.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It's I'm not just saying that, but it's very impressive
- 10:31Speaker 1: that they're playing this stuff.
- 10:32Speaker 4: It is And you also played guitar with Alice Paper's band,
- 10:36Speaker 4: of course it is part.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Of a little vampire.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Say what elements from those bands did you bring to
- 10:41Speaker 4: Cross Bones Scully everything.
- 10:47Speaker 1: If you can't learn from those guys and bring that
- 10:51Speaker 1: stuff into your own world, it's like that's the one
- 10:54Speaker 1: greatest thing.
- 10:54Speaker 6: Man.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I am so grateful that I get to play with
- 10:58Speaker 1: these guys and I get to talk to Alice Cooper
- 11:00Speaker 1: Crossbones Scully every day. I get to talk to Johnny
- 11:03Speaker 1: Depp and go, what do you think of is Jack?
- 11:05Speaker 1: What do you think it is A Joe? What do
- 11:06Speaker 1: you think it is Nikky six till? I mean, dude,
- 11:09Speaker 1: It's like, I can't thank these guys enough. But like
- 11:12Speaker 1: as far as the show, it's like it's like Alice Cooper. Man,
- 11:15Speaker 1: it's like I learned every dingy from Cooper, you know.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Yeah, and so as we said, oh, this is your
- 11:21Speaker 4: actual debut album as with your own band, Crossboned Scully,
- 11:24Speaker 4: Like you've done albums before with other people, But what
- 11:27Speaker 4: was the thought process going into your actual debut album?
- 11:31Speaker 3: Like what did you want to make sure it happened?
- 11:34Speaker 1: I wanted to make sure that there's a message in there,
- 11:37Speaker 1: you know, like it's powerful. It's not just I'm not
- 11:40Speaker 1: just saying some stupid stuff about drinking, partying and stuff,
- 11:43Speaker 1: because that's not my life.
- 11:45Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:45Speaker 1: This, This record's a it's an unanchored like record about survival. Man,
- 11:50Speaker 1: It's about doing what's right in the world. You know,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I'm not a preacher, I'm not some Jesus freak, you
- 11:56Speaker 1: know what I mean. I'm just the guy out here
- 11:57Speaker 1: trying to do the right thing, you know, and just
- 12:00Speaker 1: trying to treat people right, you know, have a little
- 12:04Speaker 1: empathy and just always do the right thing, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 1: because it's really hard out there. The world's a tough place.
- 12:10Speaker 1: There's a lot of crazy stuff going on. I'm always
- 12:13Speaker 1: trying how do we bring a little light to this stuff,
- 12:15Speaker 1: you know, and with Scully hopefully you know, it could
- 12:18Speaker 1: bring some light to some people.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And is this your first band as actual lead singer?
- 12:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what, man, Chris, And it's fucking awesome.
- 12:29Speaker 3: I love it. You've done it, Joe Bright like you
- 12:33Speaker 3: stand like you were born to do it.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I you know what, the greatest thing is, I've been
- 12:38Speaker 1: waiting for this moment.
- 12:40Speaker 2: What's that song?
- 12:41Speaker 1: Witness moment my whole life? Whatever the hell that song is?
- 12:43Speaker 1: I forgot it is. But the cool thing about it
- 12:46Speaker 1: is I got to put the band.
- 12:47Speaker 2: I gotta, I gotta.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I was able to put the band together that I want,
- 12:52Speaker 1: you know, because I'm a very picky guy when it
- 12:54Speaker 1: comes to like musicians and music, you know, and to me,
- 12:59Speaker 1: it was very important to have number one, a girl
- 13:04Speaker 1: that could play her ass off on guitar. Because this
- 13:07Speaker 1: is all Alice Cooper. When you say what do you
- 13:09Speaker 1: learn from these guys? What do you bring to it?
- 13:11Speaker 1: This is Alice Cooper. I saw what happened with Oriante.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I saw what happened with Nita Strauss, and I'm like going, hey,
- 13:16Speaker 1: you know what, I want to find my Oriante. I
- 13:19Speaker 1: want to find my Nita Strauss. And I found her
- 13:23Speaker 1: on Instagram, you know, which is pretty cool.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Wow.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And the other guys too, like Sam Bam another guy,
- 13:31Speaker 1: young guy in La. I've been watching that kid for years.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Amazing having Chris Wise, you know, an elder elderly statesman,
- 13:39Speaker 1: fucking great bass player.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I love him.
- 13:42Speaker 1: And having Glenn Solbill played. He's played drums on every
- 13:44Speaker 1: song we've ever had, you know. And the only thing
- 13:47Speaker 1: right now with the live band the drummer situation. When
- 13:49Speaker 1: you look at the videos, there's been a couple of
- 13:51Speaker 1: different drummers, but we're gonna we have Glenn doing he
- 13:54Speaker 1: shows right now because one guy hurt his hand, cut
- 13:58Speaker 1: it and the girl wasn't available so Tuesday.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Wait.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Now, speaking of live shows, you are kicking off tonight
- 14:04Speaker 4: I believe.
- 14:05Speaker 3: So what's where's the chores? Taking you tours?
- 14:09Speaker 1: Taking us to right down the street the Hollywood for
- 14:11Speaker 1: the next things at the Lair of the Hollywood Vampires,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and uh, we've got two shows and then uh the
- 14:21Speaker 1: record comes out and then next year we're gonna start
- 14:23Speaker 1: setting up gigs. We're gonna start setting up shows. See
- 14:25Speaker 1: who wants to like take us out on tour, see
- 14:28Speaker 1: what we can get and uh, and just keep on
- 14:31Speaker 1: pushing forward, you know, staying positive and moving forward. That's
- 14:33Speaker 1: the whole idea.
- 14:34Speaker 3: You know, is Astralia in the mix there?
- 14:37Speaker 2: Straight? He's always in the mix.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Kidding me, I think Australia the uses would eat this
- 14:43Speaker 1: ship up. Dude, Come on, we gotta get down there.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Right second that night, Broy, you bring this show down
- 14:48Speaker 4: down Under and you guys would rock the fuck out
- 14:51Speaker 4: of it, right.
- 14:53Speaker 2: I can't wait until we have that opportunity, man, totally.
- 14:56Speaker 3: So now before weulate you guys, I've got a new segment.
- 14:59Speaker 4: I've started cald Fight eye Ball and so basically I
- 15:02Speaker 4: trow three social media before I chat with you, pick
- 15:04Speaker 4: out a couple of fighters that I want to know
- 15:06Speaker 4: a bit more about, and then throw it at you.
- 15:09Speaker 3: So I've come up with where it's right, tell us
- 15:17Speaker 3: bit more about that.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Oh, so that's Riley Donahue. He's the kid who did
- 15:25Speaker 1: the animation for the Evil war Machine short film called
- 15:29Speaker 1: Thing One. And the guy in the costume is uh no,
- 15:36Speaker 1: it's uh he's got Scott would know. We did this
- 15:42Speaker 1: comic con thing and he dressed up as Scully and
