- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. Today we're talking about
- 0:30attending the arguments. So it has often been said you do
- 0:35not have to attend every argument that you are invited
- 0:38to. And I cannot stress enough how
- 0:41important it is to remember that.
- 0:43If you do not want to attend the argument, you have to ask
- 0:47yourself, why am I entertaining the conversation to begin with?
- 0:52The other person's point of view in an argument is their choice.
- 0:55They're going to come out. And of course, if they invite
- 0:57you to the argument, you have the opportunity to jump into it
- 1:01just like you do if you're invited to a party.
- 1:03You get the invitation, you open it, you look at it and you're
- 1:06like, oh boy, OK, is this a party I really want to go to?
- 1:11I don't know. What would I wear?
- 1:13When is it? How long do I have to be there?
- 1:17We invited to something. We take in a lot of information.
- 1:21We start sourcing a lot of information.
- 1:23We start thinking about a lot of it because we're we're being
- 1:26thoughtful, right? We're processing this invitation
- 1:29that we've been given, but when it comes to an argument, when it
- 1:32comes to something like an actual argument, we never think
- 1:36about this as an invitation. When someone throws something at
- 1:39you, an accusation of thought that they have randomly, they're
- 1:44upset with you because of something you did, They're
- 1:47they're providing you an invitation to look at what you
- 1:51did and say, OK, do I want to attend this argument
- 1:55conversation? Do I want to attend this, this
- 1:58event that's about to happen with this per person?
- 2:01And it's not about ignoring it, but it's about choosing what you
- 2:06want to do, just like you would choose an invitation to a party.
- 2:10And when they say RSVP, you say thank you, No thank you.
- 2:13Maybe you you give them information to by by which they
- 2:17can go to make their plans. So think of it like this, when
- 2:21the arguments show up and they do, believe me, they do, you
- 2:26have to first and foremost look at this and say, is this who I
- 2:30want to be? Do I want to choose to go down
- 2:32this road? Because we all have the option
- 2:35to choose to go down the road. At any point in time, we can
- 2:38say, yes, I'm going to go down this road.
- 2:40But for most of us, we don't like to argue.
- 2:43And especially if you listen to this podcast, my belief is that
- 2:47you have a whole different wire. And my belief is that you're
- 2:50trying to grow and you're trying to make yourself better.
- 2:53And that's why we have the types of conversations that we have so
- 2:56you can. So when someone invites you and
- 2:59they say they throw an accusation or something at you,
- 3:02they they sharp, they speak sharply to you, they have an
- 3:05attitude with you. You get to decide the focus you
- 3:10want to give it the intention that you want to respond with.
- 3:13So if you show up and they literally trigger you and that
- 3:17you are now pissed off, you, you all of a sudden have to go, OK,
- 3:22I'm angry and I'm going to respond in your head and you and
- 3:26anger is driving your bus and you're, you've now said the
- 3:30check the yes box. I'm attending this argument and
- 3:33you're going to go all in with it and you better be prepared
- 3:37because those types of things lead to other outcomes where
- 3:42there's going to be more invitations to more arguments
- 3:45and so forth and so on. Now, what happens if you don't
- 3:48attend? That's always the big question.
- 3:50Someone asked me the other day, well, what happens if she does
- 3:53this or that? And then I have no choice.
- 3:57But I have to answer no, you still have a choice.
- 4:00You are a grown person, grown human being.
- 4:04You have the ability to answer however you choose, but no
- 4:08thoughtfully whether you're checking the box to attend the
- 4:11argument or not. Because if you attend the
- 4:13argument, then you have to go down the whole way because
- 4:17you've you've jumped in and you say I have to defend myself.
- 4:20No, you don't. It's not a court of law.
- 4:22It's not a court of law. No one is telling you that you
- 4:25have to defend yourself. Defend yourself.
- 4:28If someone's attacking you, you can defend yourself.
- 4:30And if someone's put you in a position where they've arrested
- 4:35you and you're being put in jail.
- 4:37But in most arguments, we don't have to defend ourselves.
- 4:42And it's really hard, my friends, to remember that
- 4:45because the person on the other side that's making the
- 4:48accusation has already got a belief system around it.
- 4:51And if they're asking you a question and they're saying,
- 4:54Hey, did you do this? They're they're looking for
- 4:59information for you to quantify this, like, OK, is this is this
- 5:03true or is it not true? That's not defending yourself.
- 5:07That's someone's asking you a legitimate question.
- 5:10But if they say you know something really, really, really
- 5:14hard about you're doing this and you're doing this and you're
- 5:17doing this, that's where you feel like you have to really,
- 5:20really defend yourself when they say it's absolutely happening.
- 5:24It's a trigger. If you know you are not doing
- 5:27those things, do you really have to fight about it?
- 5:31And this is a personal choice. There is no right or wrong
- 5:33answer. It's just this is a personal
- 5:35choice and we have to decide how we want to show up.
- 5:38And it's very hard to make a choice and say, I'm not going to
- 5:42attend this argument and I'm not going to have to defend myself
- 5:46because I know I didn't do those things.
- 5:48And you don't even have to say to them, I know I didn't do
- 5:50those things. You could just say, you know
- 5:52what? This is not healthy for us.
- 5:55This is not going to take us where we want to go.
- 5:57And I have very different points of view on things.
- 6:01And the best thing that we can do is agree to disagree and move
- 6:05forward. Sometimes that's the answer,
- 6:08sometimes it is. I don't see this the way you see
- 6:11it. OK, great.
- 6:12I appreciate that we have different points of view, just
- 6:15like different taste buds. I don't like peas, but you like
- 6:18peas. We have different angles from
- 6:20this. But we can't stay in the past
- 6:22and argue what happened because life doesn't have instant
- 6:24replay. And what we need to do is move
- 6:26ourselves forward. So this is all options and if
- 6:30you choose to take them, sometimes the outcome is better,
- 6:34often it's out better. So all right, my friends, I hope
- 6:37you have a blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 6:39Bye.
