- 2:07All right, well, now it's time for a new episode of Yours truly,
- 2:10Johnny Dollar. This one is called the Jolly Rogers Fraud Matter from Hollywood.
- 2:17It's time now for Johnny Dollar. Hi, Johnny, Pat mccrack in
- 2:24a universal adjustment. Hello, Patt, listen, I have something here,
- 2:29I think mane holded boy, I've already pecked you are. Yeah, I'm
- 2:32taking off in about an hour, first plane out. I can get it.
- 2:36You know, I've been planning it for months. Oh could it only
- 2:38happened last Thursday? Mad? Yeah? I'm going on a vacation far far
- 2:43away, the sunny southern California little town of O Joya. And to help
- 2:46me keep out a sight from such as you, I'm taking along all my
- 2:49skin diving outfit. By wait, Johnny, that's right next door to what
- 2:53the case I want you to handle for us in San Diego. Just change
- 2:57my plans, Pat, I'm going to Florida. No, listen, there's
- 3:00enough commission on this case to pay for two vacations and as long as you're
- 3:04going to be right there in southern cal anyway, Look, why don't you
- 3:07drop in on me before you take off? Okay? What just talking to
- 3:14myself. I'll see you tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the
- 3:24transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous freelance insurance
- 3:30Investigators, Truly Johnny Dollar expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the
- 3:49Universal Adjustment Bureau Hertford, Connecticut, following as an accounting of expenditures incurred during
- 3:53my investigation of the Jolly Roger fraud expense account IE one TAXI you for myself
- 4:00from my vacation luggage to the offices of Universal Adjustment four to three six Parley
- 4:03Street, Hartford, and the hope I could argue both Pat mccrankan and myself
- 4:08out of taking on the case. The last two cases I'd handled for Pat
- 4:11had almost cost me my life, and I was beginning to be a bit
- 4:14superstitious about anything he had a hand in. But trying to talk him Donald's
- 4:17like trying to talk down your mother in Lady, you're a skin diving trick
- 4:20will help you crack the case. But the main thing is you're going to
- 4:24California anyhow. This way you can put your whole vacation on expense account.
- 4:28Pat, and baby, if I know you, you run down the case
- 4:30in about two days, come up with a swindle sheet for a couple of
- 4:33weeks. Hat to say nothing of the commission I mentioned over the phone.
- 4:36Listen, you see that Jolly Roger was insured by Southwest Maritime Insurance and Liability
- 4:43for four hundred and sixty g's. Bert Parker in their San Diego office can
- 4:46give you all the dope on it. Bert Parker, sure you remember him
- 4:50handed you the molly k matter a few months ago, A very profitable case
- 4:54for you, wasn't it? Well, wasn't it? Yeah? Ifn not
- 4:58lost, I will. You'll clean up on this too. Jolly Roger.
- 5:00You know it was one of the finest sea going yachts on the West Coast.
- 5:02No, I didn't know, But Pat, I have a diesel job
- 5:05one hundred and ten feet long floating palace, probably the most luxurious wooden hull
- 5:11job built since the wooden hall one hundred and ten foot diesel job. Yeah,
- 5:15and that, unfortunately, is why she burned to the waterline before the
- 5:17weight of her engines carried her down to Davy Jones's locker. Total loss huh
- 5:23total four hundred and sixty thousand bucks gone. That's too bad. Well,
- 5:28Patta, was nice seeing you again. Now I got to get my plane
- 5:30to New York to get my plane for the coast. But I haven't even
- 5:32told you why. We want you to look in on this thing. Pat.
- 5:34I am going to the coast on a vacation. Remember, but I
- 5:38told you. I told Bert that you were on your way. You told
- 5:41what Sure holed him right after I talked to you. Well, you dog.
- 5:44Sure He's promised to contact the Mexican authorities that you may need to help
- 5:47you and have every single how are they involved? All? Now, look,
- 5:51Pat, enough of this. I got to get it. Sure,
- 5:53my car's right downstairs, and I can tell you the rest I know.
- 5:56No, no, no, tell it to somebody else. I'm going out
- 5:59there to make you can't let me down on this one. Look, we
- 6:01haven't got any regular man out there are only a couple of part timers like
- 6:04Burt Parker, you know, sell the policies with one hand and actor's adjusters
- 6:09with the other. I gotta go sure, you see here, I'll make
- 6:12that bank. And this one is he that works out all right on small
- 6:15accounts, but on these big ones. Wow, what do you got in
- 6:18here? Case? Scotch hand, Will you shut up a minute, let
- 6:20me tell you your life. I'd give you a chance to change your mind
- 6:24about taking on Dard. Here's the elevator. Oh excuse me, lady.
- 6:28Sorry now, I still haven't told you why we smell something wrong in this
- 6:30whole case. It's simply and clearly this John. Yeah, that's simply and
- 6:43clearly this but decently Jolie Rodger was owned by one paula Saginian, ex rum
- 6:48runner, ex gun runner, ex shipping magnet, suspected spy through two World
- 6:53Wars, and generally undesirable character. Despite the Midians he'd made during the last
- 6:58Warry cleaned up by scaring some of the smaller countries into buying a lot of
- 7:00obsolete military equipment that was hardly fit for the scrap pile, and in more
- 7:04than one place around the world there was anything but a welcome matt waiting for
- 7:08him. And in a lot of places, there's a lot of countries.
- 7:11The minute he landed Seagoing Palace, the gendarmes would stick to him like flies
- 7:14to a molasses barrel, just to make sure he behaved himself. Anyhow,
- 7:18trying to argue with Pat was useless, so I agreed to take on the
- 7:23case. Expense account items two three and four one hundred ninety dollars four cents
- 7:30Plaine Fairs and Incinettal's Hartford to New York, New York to Los Angeles,
- 7:33LA to San Diego, where I hoped to grab a cab to La Joya
- 7:36before Bert Parker can find out I'd arrive, but I was met at the
- 7:41airport, but not by Bert Parker. Mister Dollar. Uh, yeah,
- 7:46I thought you were by the description. Don't tell me they've got me on
- 7:49those wanted posters out here too, silly. I'm Jen Kenny mister Parker's office,
- 7:56you know, Southwest Insurance and Liability. Mmmm. Maybe out to take
- 7:59the case after all, I'm going to work with you on it. Oh
- 8:01no, I'm sure I won't you see mister Parker's in the hospital. When
- 8:05he received mister McCracken's wire about your time of arrival, he asked me to
- 8:07meet you here hospital. What's the matter with him? It's supposed to have
- 8:11been an accident hit and run? Well, what do you mean supposed to
- 8:16be? Bert thinks they tried to run him down deliberately. Ooh, I
- 8:20think he'd better tell you about it. Yeah, I think somebody better.
- 8:28We picked up my luggage, dropped it off at a hotel. I've found
- 8:31the place. I've made a reservation in La Joya and told him I might
- 8:33be a day late, and Jan Penny and I went on over to the
- 8:35Queen of Mercy Hospital to talk with Bert Parker on doctor's orders. I went
- 8:39into his room alone. Bert looked terrible, So so glad you couldn't make
- 8:46it, Johnny, are you sure you want to be trying to talk?
- 8:48Bert? Look, why don't we forget enough to talk? Well? I
- 8:54can, Johnny try to kid me? Tell me? Oh, we got
- 8:58it here. Couple of days and lying I saw the chart internal internal bleeding
- 9:09birds. Take it easy? What you look? The doc said, you
- 9:11have to take it easy? Why can't you Gale, Jan tell me all
- 9:16I need to know on the case. She can't accept us. It's getting
- 9:22them done. Yeah, she said she thought it wasn't an accident. She
- 9:28thinks I know phone calls threatening, phone calls threatening about what because because of
- 9:37holding up on this claim, somehow somebody found out. I called Hart as
- 9:46investigation nake, and Deny said he you all know the Johnny Rush. Yeah,
- 9:54denies knowing anything about the cause. But they weren't getting Johnny. That's
- 9:58why I'm here, and they probably know I was asking him out here.
- 10:03Johnny, Johnny better go back drop this one over. Bert. If they
- 10:09don't know, they know, you're shut me Trey Mere Johnny, Yeah,
- 10:18nurse nurse. Three hours later, while Jan Penny and I paced the quarter,
- 10:26Bert Parker died. The only thing I'd learned from him was that I'd
- 10:30better be careful, mighty careful. I took Chan Penny to the roughest,
- 10:39toughest dive I could find, Ray Kemper's cat club, and I hope we
- 10:41could both drown a sorrow or two. Why Johnny, why did it have
- 10:46to be Burt? You liked him, didn't I loved him? I loved
- 10:50Bert night seven other drink. Hey, Jan, don't you think maybe wait?
- 11:01Waited you want? I know this is no way to face it,
- 11:09Johnny. Sorry. I came out here like everybody does, every young female
- 11:13kid who's been told she's prettier than the rest, you know, the movies,
- 11:18Hollywood, glamour, all that stuff. But it was rough, was
- 11:22too rough, and I couldn't play the game they seemed to want to play
- 11:26out here. And I was all set to go back to the farm country
- 11:30and settle down to the same dog. But then I met Bert. Instead
- 11:35of giving me just a lot of fast talk, he said he wanted to
- 11:37help me. He did, Johnny really did. Took me into his office
- 11:41here in San Diego, and we made this office Johnny, we did.
- 11:46And he still didn't try to make any advances because he knew I wouldn't want
- 11:50that. What he didn't know was that I loved him for it. But
- 11:56I loved him. Now he's gone, Hey, look, Chan, there's
- 12:01nothing we can do about it except try to finish the job he started on
- 12:05the case that well put us here drinking too much, and try not to
- 12:09think of him. I'm thinking of nothing else but you, Oh, thanks
- 12:13Bundy here keep the change. Johnny. Yeah, you're like Bert, You're
- 12:26straight. I'm glad easy again. Maybe you didn't know him as well as
- 12:30I did, but you cared about even enough to well to do this.
- 12:35And Chan listen, Chan, yes, grab your coat. I'm taking you
- 12:43home. I'm all right, really I am. You've got a double job
- 12:46to do tomorrow, his as well as yours. How can you talk?
- 12:50I know, I know. I'm out here. I'm out here to knock
- 12:52off the Johnny Roger. Make sure the payment of the claim is okay.
- 12:56At least that's why I came out here. Now I've also got a find
- 13:00out who well. Yeah, and I'm gonna need your help, all right,
- 13:07Johnny, Come on your gravy coat. I took her home to her
- 13:18little apartment on East Drive. I didn't go up for the usual nightcap because
- 13:22it didn't want to, and I knew Jan didn't want me to. I
- 13:28dropped into police headquarters homicide first, and then traffic Detail to see if they'd
- 13:31been able to dig up anything on the head run driver who'd kill Bert.
- 13:35Nothing. Apparently, the threat he'd received just before the so called accident was
- 13:39something that only he and Jan had known about the expense account. Oh,
- 13:45I don't know. Call it ten bucks, a couple of caves, a
- 13:46couple of drinks or maybe six or raider. And I'm kind of tired tonight.
- 13:52Bert was a nice guy. Jan's a nice girl. In the morning,
- 13:58I'll call the hotel in Ojoyan delay my reservation there another day. Meantime,
- 14:01I'll get some sleep. I guess maybe I'll even cook me have a
- 14:05dream or two about skin diving and sunning and the rocks at La Joya.
- 14:09After all this whole rocking cases cleared up, give myself a good winter ten
- 14:13to take the place of this high Eastern pallor I've been trying to get.
- 14:16Oh, hello, hello, Johnny, Hello Johnny. Hello. I can't
- 14:26Jan, Yes, Johnny, listen to me. Yeah, we must have
- 14:31been followed tonight. Jan. I got a phone call just a minute ago.
- 14:39The man he threatened me. He threatend you. How who was it?
- 14:43I don't know. He said, if I help you, yeah,
- 14:46there'll be another accident. To me, jam And did you and did you
- 14:50listen? Jam? Oh, Johnny, I have a friend, Johnny Dollar.
- 15:11This is Jan. Yes, Jane, I'm a minute to go after
- 15:15you left me here at my apartment. I got a phone call, a
- 15:18threat. If I help you in this case, there'll be another accident like
- 15:22the one that happened to Bert failed to me, Jan, do you,
- 15:26oh, Johnny, I'm afraid say right where you are. I'm on my
- 15:30way. Over expense accounts ivented by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Universal Adjustment
- 15:43Bureau. Attention Patrick McCracken, fant. I'm addressing this to you instead of
- 15:48to the Southwestern Maritime Insurance and Liability because Southwestern sole representative here in San Diego,
- 15:52California, Burt Parker died yesterday in the hospital, presumably of an accident,
- 15:58but I don't believe it. I think it's because he knew too much
- 16:00about this case, the Jolly Roger fraud. Itdem six two seventy camp fare
- 16:07and tip from my hotel to the little apartment of Jan Penny, who had
- 16:11been Bert Parker's secretary before he was killed. Johnny Dollar, are you all
- 16:21right? I've ben Johnny quick enough. Who was it threatened over the phone?
- 16:30Did you recognize the voice? Yes? Oh? Who was it?
- 16:33I don't know. It was the same voice that called Bird at the office
- 16:36and warned him before he was run down by that car. Killed. But
- 16:40you don't know who it was. No, I'm so scared. Please hold
- 16:42me. I don't mean that it sounds. I can't try. It's okay,
- 16:48Jan it's okay. Just take it easy. Here we are, come
- 16:52on, sit down, have a cigarette. Sorry, I'm sorry, Johnny.
- 17:03I guess it's just been too much for a gown. Sure, I
- 17:07don't doubt it. I thought when I bought you a few drinks tonight,
- 17:10you'd be able to come back here and sleep and forget what's happened, forget
- 17:12about Bert being killed. It's because he held up the claim on the Jolly
- 17:15Roger, because he sent for you. That's why they're threatening you to how
- 17:21Johnny, be careful and you have no idea who they is. Of course
- 17:23I do the same idea. You have the man who owned the Jolly Roger
- 17:27before she burned and sank paulas Zanagian. Just how much do you know about
- 17:33Zanagian? Only what Bert told me? He was an international crook, gun
- 17:37runner, spy shipping magnet, international trouble maker. Yeah, just about his
- 17:41welcome in any decent country of this world. As the plate Bert didn't want
- 17:44to insure the Jolly Roger certainly an appropriate name, all right, if ever
- 17:48there was an international pirate, But go on, Joe. Bert didn't want
- 17:51to insure it. Four hundred and sixty thousand dollars wouldn't hull in all,
- 17:56But he had to. Southwestern is a small company, john and the premium,
- 18:00two years premium in advance was too much to turn down. So that
- 18:03was the clincher. Yes, Bert needed it so much, but then it
- 18:07burned and sank. Yes, when they submitted the claim it's an egg hi
- 18:12himself? Oh yes, Johnny, it was Paula Zenaggan himself who bought the
- 18:15policy, and he made the claim demanded immediate payment. When Bert decided to
- 18:21hold up until you could come out here and investigate him. The warnings and
- 18:23the so called accident that killed him. Yes, now they're warning me you,
- 18:33Johnny, why don't you give this up? Where's an eggin now here
- 18:37in San Diego at the larch Man And you're sure it wasn't he who called
- 18:40you tonight? Who called Burton warned him? I'm sure I would have known
- 18:42his voice, his accent. But Johnny, I'm frightened right now. Look
- 18:47Look, go on in there in your bedroom and sleep. No, take
- 18:49a sleeping pill, whatever you like, but get some sleep. Look,
- 18:52there's nothing we can do tonight, and there'll be plenty for us to do
- 18:55tomorrow after that phone call out. I'll stay right here on the sofa and
- 18:59look, I've got this. Have you any kind of a gun? No,
- 19:03Johnny, Now go on in there, lock your windows, close the
- 19:06drapes, and get some sleep. That's orders, all right, Good night,
- 19:14Johnny. I hope chan slept better than I did. Expense account item
- 19:25seven ninety cents. Taxi to police headquarters first thing in the morning. I
- 19:29spent a solid hour talking with Detective Sergeant Joe Franklin. Yes, they were
- 19:33working on the hit run death of Bert Parker. No, they hadn't come
- 19:36up with any leads. All he knew was that Bert had left his office
- 19:40late, was shortcutting his way through an alley to where his car was parked,
- 19:41had been knocked down when he reached the end of the alley. No
- 19:45witness, no tire marks, nothing. They questioned Jan Penny about possible enemies
- 19:48and come up with the same answer as I did, But no evidence.
- 19:52Right am ete taxi to the Larchmont, where the desk clerk announced my arrival
- 19:56to the Penthouse suite Covin co means, sir, I've been waiting for you
- 20:00to call on me terribly distesting news about your colleague, mister Parker. I
- 20:07feel. Oh, sit down, sit down, won't you tell me?
- 20:11Sir? Have the police found any clue as to who ran down and killed
- 20:14the poor man? Oh? You know that he died last night? Oh?
- 20:18Yes, of course, within a few minutes of when it happened.
- 20:21But was Sergeant Franklin able to give you no inkling of who might have done
- 20:23it? Do not look surprised, my boy. I not only know of
- 20:29your visit to police headquarters this morning, but have everything else you have done
- 20:32since your arrival here on Sunday. That's very interesting, is indeed, But
- 20:37I am sure the reason for it is very obvious, of course, my
- 20:41friend. Of course, I am depending on you to see the prompt payment
- 20:45of my insurance on the joy Roger is made. After all, that is
- 20:49the only reason for your being sent here. Therefore, I feel my obligation
- 20:53to see that nothing happens to you that you are given shall we say,
- 20:57adequate protection during the time you are here. I think, in my behart
- 21:03that is why I have made a trusted man responsible for watching over you at
- 21:07all times during your stay. I suppose that's just a polite way of saying
- 21:11that you've had somebody taming me since I got here. Oh. Oh,
- 21:15by the way, a lovely girl, miss Penny, isn't she? And
- 21:18she was so devoted to mister Parker terrible shock to her his death. Your
- 21:23solicitude to her is to be highly commended, you really keep. But now
- 21:27let us get down to the business at hand. Yeah, that's the loss
- 21:30of the Jolly Roger came at a most inopportune moment. My crew were testing
- 21:36some new equipment in preparation for a somewhat lengthy trip abroad when the accident occurred.
- 21:40They sent her to the bottom outain near the Coronado Islands. Just what
- 21:44kind of an accident was it? Oh, forgive me, dear man,
- 21:49I forget you have not yet contacted because God for the details of the whole
- 21:52affair, that's right, But I am certain you will, So why should
- 21:56I bore you with information you will only have to hear all over again from
- 22:00them. Suffice it to say, dear sir, that the loss of my
- 22:03beautiful yacht was due to some mechanical failure, so to speak, something with
- 22:10the electrical system. I believe it was, Yes, I do. But
- 22:12my point to you is simply that I must have settlement of my claim without
- 22:17delay, so that I can leave the United States as soon as possible.
- 22:21For where do you mind? No, of course I don't mind. But
- 22:26why bore you with my personal affairs? So urgent is my need for immediate
- 22:30settlement that I can only remind you that I am a most generous person,
- 22:37which is to say, I can assure you an ample reward for anything you
- 22:40may do to expedite payment to me. I'm sorry, my dear sir,
- 22:45Oh, dear me. I'm sorry. I've seemed to monopolize the conversation.
- 22:51Just as again, let's start beating around the bush. An insurance claim for
- 22:55four hundred and sixty thousand dollars is investigated. In any event, Bert Parker
- 23:00seemed to think there was something wrong with his claim. He said so,
- 23:02and apparently it cost him his life. The same threats that were made to
- 23:06him have been passed on to a secretary chant penny to me. And if
- 23:08that doesn't make a whole case. Smell the high heaven, my dear sir.
- 23:12Now you're trying to bribe me to make a quick settlement. So,
- 23:15mister, if I weren't suspicious of the whole thing before, you can believe
- 23:18me, I am. Now Why anyone with your reputation for midian should be
- 23:22in such a hurry to get his hands on a few hundred thousand I don't
- 23:25know, but if I were you, I'd sit back very quietly and prepare
- 23:29for a long wait to see if you get it at all. Oh how
- 23:37unfortunate this attitude for you? That a threat? No, dear boy,
- 23:41not at all. I am simply thinking of how much easier it could be
- 23:48for you, and of course profitable that perhaps he will change your mind.
- 23:53Not a chance, then, sir, since settlement of my claim seems to
- 23:57rest entirely on your shoulders at the moment, and since someone I can't imagine
- 24:02who has seen fit to threaten you, And please don't forget that, dear
- 24:07boy, mister Sanagen, Yes, I don't scare easy. It was pretty
- 24:17obvious that Paula Senagan was used to having his own way, would stop it
- 24:21nothing to get it. Bert Parker had been right, I'd have to watch
- 24:23my step. I checked with jan and grabbed a taxi to pay a visit
- 24:27to the Coastguard Lieutenant John Smith. Believe it or not, you can take
- 24:33your choice. Dollar read the report on the burning and singing the Jolly Roger
- 24:36here or the copy I let bird Parker. Have I tell it you talked
- 24:38to him? Parker is dead? Why? Yeah? Hit and run.
- 24:41After he received a couple of threats to lay off this case. He locked
- 24:45up zenagain yet on what charges? So who else? It's a lot to
- 24:48go on. If he didn't think that boat himself, I'm a walleyed monkey.
- 24:52You'll find out anything to back that up. Oh, not a thing
- 24:55that Jolly Roger's thinking about. As bad as spot out there as could have
- 24:57been picked. It's deep, bad, dirty water from on sure silk.
- 25:02We tried to send on divers, got nowhere. Hey wait, I thought
- 25:04she went down in Mexican waters off the Coronados, as she did. But
- 25:07we supplied the divers or tried to international cooperation that sort of stuff, but
- 25:11we got nowhere. How'd you find out about it in the first place.
- 25:15One of our planes on routine patrol saw the puff from the explosion out over
- 25:18the water. By the time it actually got there, the hull was nothing
- 25:22but a massive flames sank ten fifteen minutes later. What about the crew?
- 25:25The crew were lost except for one kid, a cabin boy. Where's he?
- 25:30Mexican fishing bud out of Rosarita picked him up. It was in bad
- 25:33shape, explosionly blown and clear, and he's in the hospital on Tijuana.
- 25:37Well look, wait, hasn't anybody talked to him? He's too badly heard
- 25:40it first, But I spoke with the hospital before you got here, and
- 25:42they think he might be able to talk by some time this afternoon. What
- 25:45are we waiting for? Come on, let's get down there. And I
- 25:48can't until later. Uh. Look, if you got a car, you
- 25:52want mine? Well, sure, let's go. How far is even within
- 25:56the speed limit? You can make it an a half hour? Not this
- 26:00way, of course, that's a lot in my back. Look here,
- 26:03money, generous smith, I'll try to make this up to you somehow.
- 26:06Forget it. I'd like to see you get the goods ones and egg in
- 26:08just as much as you would. I didn't like having him come into port
- 26:11here in the first place, and then when I learned that both Holland and
- 26:15Switzerland and tied up all of his funds. They want sure in early last
- 26:19week's papers, that's why he needs the money. Here's my car if you
- 26:23can learn anything down there, If I can be of any help, I'm
- 26:26on pretty good terms with a dollar. Oh, mister dollar. Oh,
- 26:34I caught an excellent shotis here would have got you to Tijuana much more rapidly
- 26:38and comfortably than you might drive. I am sure. Wait, wait just
- 26:42a minute, which is why I came to meet you here. I knew
- 26:45you'd want to talk with the cabin boy who survived the accident to my unifated
- 26:49Julie Rodgers, Oh you did, yes, However, I fear it is
- 26:55too late. What do you mean? As I was leaving my hotel,
- 26:57I heard from one of my shall we say associates. He informed me that
- 27:02he had just learned from one of his shall we say contacts in Tijuana alas
- 27:10the poor cabin boy died only a few minutes ago. Pity, sir,
- 27:15isn't it. Now Here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's intrigguing episode of
- 27:34this week story Tomorrow, a dead man talks and what he has to say
- 27:38isn't very pleasant. For it all adds up to just one more good,
- 27:42solid thread on the life of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny Dollar,
- 28:00starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood. It is produced and directed
- 28:04by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote Tonight's story. Be sure to join us
- 28:10tomorrow night, same time and station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly
- 28:17Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Well, we got a very
- 29:23key moment here, and that was the introduction of the character of Pat McCracken.
- 29:30Pat is actually one of those insurance investigators become a or insurance adjusters who
- 29:40would become a regular character on Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. And this is a
- 29:47marks a pretty big shift because throughout the show's history, you know, you
- 29:51just have a generic actor from a generic company call up and say, Hi,
- 29:57this is so and so from this company, come on out and investigate
- 30:02the case. But you begin to get these people as real characters, which
- 30:07I think is just a wonderful change of pace for the series overall. And
- 30:15I think that I think that this is key and this is the first of
- 30:18several recurring characters that Johnny Dollar would get as opposed to the previous versions that
- 30:25didn't really have any recurring characters at all. So definitely a big change for
- 30:33the series and one I think to welcome. All Right, well, we
- 30:37turned out listener comments and feedback, and we start with Christine, who says,
- 30:44Hi, Adam, I feel like I'm emailing you about Johnny Dollar too
- 30:47often now, but I've just finished listening to the plantagent manner and it just
- 30:52reinforced how awesome I think Bob Bailey is in this role. Nothing much really
- 30:56happened in the episode. The story pace was pretty slow, but it was
- 31:00so powerful anyway because of the emotion Bailey brought to it. So so glad
- 31:07that we are in this part of the series and hoping that it last off
- 31:10for a long time, long time as usual, Thanks for your hard work
- 31:15and kind of in the same vein have a comment here from William, who
- 31:25writes, thanks for the show, Adam, your dragon It show is what
- 31:33got me started and now I'm a daily listener. The five part Johnny Dollars
- 31:38are excellent. Hope they go on a bit more. Take care will Well,
- 31:45thanks so much, will and answer briefly to what what Catherine said.
- 31:53There's not really such a thing as emailing too much about a series or about
- 32:00the show in general. I think that really what makes the show work so
- 32:08well is just all the listener interaction we have, because that's the length of
- 32:15the commentary, because sometimes, you know, when I don't have any comments
- 32:19from listeners on a show and I don't have any new concept standard is,
- 32:23you know, it can be a struggle to get up to two minutes.
- 32:27So I really appreciate all of the listeners who email and just keep the comments
- 32:35coming. But really, I think that Bailey does a lot of work and
- 32:42he does make the shows shine. I think there is some truth to the
- 32:47fact that the shows are better because they can be better developed than if you're
- 32:52just doing a half hour show. But there's also something to Bob Bailey acting
- 33:00because in many of these shows he's dealing with material that other actors have some
- 33:07way formed, but he's doing a job that stands out so well, so
- 33:14it's a group effort. These Bailey shows are definitely very special. Then we
- 33:19have a comment from Will Perkins, who writes on Facebook, I'm almost a
- 33:23month behind in listening to the Johnny Dollar episodes where part three was missing,
- 33:29and you broadcast parts four in five together. That's why I'm writing to you.
- 33:32I recommend you consider doing the five part broadcast is parts one and three,
- 33:37one and two, Part three by itself, and then finished with parts
- 33:40four and five. It makes the flow of the story line better as you
- 33:44listen to it. Trust me on this and just do it. Thanks for
- 33:46an excellent show. Well, well, I definitely appreciate the feedback. I
- 33:51would be loath to make a change. We've kind of changed already from where
- 33:55we started it because we were originally doing the Friday show with the Carter Brown
- 34:07or whatever. The second feature was first, and we reverse that and I
- 34:13haven't received any other complaints on it since then. I personally liked doing parts
- 34:17four and five on Friday, just because Part four really leaves you with a
- 34:22sense of suspense and nah, I think that can be a good thing.
- 34:27So I appreciate the feedback, but very hesitant to change again. But I'll
- 34:32listen to what other listeners might have to say on that topic. And by
- 34:36the way, an answer to people's questions. By my account, we're about
- 34:39two fifts of the way through the five part episodes. So we've got quite
- 34:46a ways to go in this effort, and really a chance to just enjoy
- 34:52some of the best radio drama ever produced. All right, well that actually
- 34:58we have a couple other listener comments on Facebook. Rebecca says I really enjoy
- 35:05Johnny Dollar. I listened to him via your podcast, and Georgiana says Johnny
- 35:12Dollar starring Bob Bailey the best. All right, well, thanks so much
- 35:17for all your comments, truly appreciated. We will see you back here on
- 35:24Tuesday or the amazing mister Malone, and then join us back here on Wednesday
- 35:30as we continue on with the Jolly Rogers fraud matter. In the meanwtime,
