- 3:09and you old brown Stone Manchine at the corner of fifth and fourth and
- 3:13Nick and Patsy are deep in consultation on a new method of blood classification.
- 3:16When there's an urgent ring on the doorbell. That's the answer, is it?
- 3:20And ushers in a little gray lady, very nervous and very frightening.
- 3:24Look if we have a guest for lunch. Nick's lady says, she's an
- 3:28old friend of yours. I don't know whether you refolect me, mister Cotton.
- 3:31You're a great and famous remember you. Why of course I have you?
- 3:35How are you, missus Nelson in age? Now? You do remember
- 3:38it's continue since I cooked for you, ma'am. This is my secretary.
- 3:44How do you do now? Is the greatest apple pie baker in the East?
- 3:46Thank you kindly, mister Catty. Well, what you gonna do for
- 3:51you, missus Nelson? Well, Sarah, Oh, it's a funny thing.
- 3:54I've got a job now over at a max Well manufacturing planned. I
- 3:59clean up night, so I live near as I can to the plan to
- 4:01save treveling time is seen. Oh it's a very nice little board now,
- 4:06and a very nice man runs it. And mister Harrow, Now I didn't
- 4:11have any complaints until now. What's happened, miss Nelson. Well, you
- 4:15see it's like this. I like a bit of color in my room,
- 4:17so I pasted things on the wall, all kinds of bright ribbon, bright
- 4:23labels, and colored pictures. It makes the kind of patchwork quilt you see.
- 4:27Must be very pleasant. Oh, it was, mister Carter until yesterday.
- 4:31Mister Harrow, My landlord is a paper hanger by profession, and yesterday
- 4:36I come home from work to find that he'd papered the whole room with new
- 4:40wallpaper. He just covered over everything. You didn't know he was going to
- 4:45do it. Oh, no shirt, it covers an awful shock, I
- 4:48says to him. I says, mister Harrow, you take that paper off.
- 4:51I want my own decorations back. And he says, missus Nelson,
- 4:56you've got wallpaper free gratison for nothing, and you just be great fool.
- 5:00He didn't paper any other room in the house. About how bigger room do
- 5:04you have? Midland size room, sir, So you're upset because you've lost
- 5:09your own decorations, and you want to know why a landlord should paper your
- 5:12wall with arcur even asking it's worse than that. I know why he won't
- 5:16take that paper off. There's code on it, that's what And he's a
- 5:20spy, that's what he is, mister Carteret, and that's why I've come
- 5:24to you. See, Well, missus Nelson, we can't let her old
- 5:28friend down. We'll go right off with you and investigate this code of warfare,
- 5:32and even if there are no spies involved, we'll see if we can't
- 5:34get your own decorations back. Nothing's too good for the champion apple pie baker
- 5:40of the East. So this is a pretty gratis and for nothing wallpaper.
- 5:57Oh it's very nice, missus Nelson denying that. Miss All I'm saying is
- 6:01I don't want it here. Well, now let's see that right on the
- 6:05border. Still, you see there's a squidly lined with dots and dashes around
- 6:10it. And I saw it, Yes, yes, I see. Well
- 6:13that's just a conventional design. Make gets repeated over and over. It couldn't
- 6:16be coded. Yes, I'm afraid Patsy's right by anglers out, mister Elson.
- 6:21The other question isn't answered. Why did the landlord suddenly give you a
- 6:26new wallpaper for no apparent reasons? Well, I don't know, sir.
- 6:29Maybe there was something valuable on the wall that he wanted. Perhaps, exactly
- 6:33what did you use to decorate your world with, missus Nelson? Like I
- 6:36said, their old calendars and labels, any old shares of stock? Now
- 6:42what would I be doing with stock shares? Miss Here? Here, I've
- 6:46got some stuff saved up that I was going to use. I'll show it
- 6:48to you right in my closet. You can see for yourself. It wasn't
- 6:51anything, mister Coster. I'll get him out of here. Mister Hell,
- 7:02my land lord himself in the closet. Hook yes, and he's unquestionably jet
- 7:21pay nails him down the sitting room. She's feeling a little generlly, what
- 7:27a mess. Yes, she's aggued me not to send for the police.
- 7:30She's afraid as she gets mixed up in a police case, she'll never get
- 7:31another job. But you've got to call the police in le suicide, don't
- 7:35you. We're not going to call in the police. And this wasn't suicide.
- 7:39Me. Look at Betsy Hell. Apparently hung himself from this hook high
- 7:42up in the closet wall, right, Yes, how did he get there?
- 7:45Well, he stood on that closed hamper under his feet, hiding out
- 7:47around his neck into the hook, and then hung himself. And how do
- 7:50you account for the fact that the closed hamper is fifteen inches under his dangling
- 7:54feet? What did you do? Jump up? Pull himself up? Impossible?
- 7:58And it's murdered the capitol, m the police, and just about ruin
- 8:03everything for missus Nelson. Was at an officer of Sergeant Mathieson's calipher, say,
- 8:07when he found a man murdered in Missus Nelson's room after they'd had a
- 8:09fight about wallpaper. Oh yes, and he'd have no choice but to lock
- 8:13her up and hold her on suspicion of murder. Exactly, I said,
- 8:16I do missus Nelson a favor, and I will I'll crack this case with
- 8:20a minimum of treble for her. I don't like it, Nate, But
- 8:24what do we do? Look here, Patsy, you can't miss the connection.
- 8:26The murders tied up with the wallpaper. Well, that's right. The
- 8:28only trouble is what's the wallpaper tied up with? Something on the wall okay,
- 8:35and your fingers along the wall. He was a lumpy pattern of missus
- 8:39Nelson's decorations under the paper. Mister Harrow did not put up that paper to
- 8:43steal anything from underneath? And why did he gabby? His answer, to
- 8:46conceal something you cantal what? But I'd like to find out come on on
- 8:50Harrold's rooms. Missus Nelson said. It was in the back of the house.
- 8:54Probably find his paper hanging equipment there. And then what then we're going
- 8:58to rip this paper off the wall? He sits daunting here think fist into
- 9:18the course of the adjoining n like the switch wasn't look in the bedroom?
- 9:26That's yesn okay, go kind of a guy who loves Harrow anyway, a
- 9:37brand new and expensive You don't buy any one of them for less than sixty
- 9:41dollars three in the room of the boarding house land. Yeah, this is
- 9:48beginning to get curious, or and curious or a stop behind the bed got
- 9:52a blight. It was the killer after the perfume bottles where up front?
- 10:03Door? Quin? All right, wise, guy, all right, you
- 10:09would have well well mister Nick Carter and company dog Madison, Hi, Maddy,
- 10:16just in time did the man come out the first time for what?
- 10:18Murder? Oh? You know about that? Know about us? What do
- 10:20you think I'm not doing out here? Lesten Marty. We gotta work fast.
- 10:22The killer is never mind the fast talk, Nick. I want a
- 10:24couple of quiet words with you. You know why I came out here.
- 10:28I'm listening impatiently. I get a call ten minutes ago. Guy with the
- 10:31name of Harrow just bumped off. That's right, and the course said he
- 10:35was bumped off by none other than Nick Carter himself. You can't think that,
- 10:39Nick. Now listen, Patsy. I'm not saying I believe Nick killed
- 10:43anybody, but you better explain how he neglected to notify homicide as soon as
- 10:48he found the body. That's a criminal offense in this city. I'll explain
- 10:50in a few minutes. Matic come on in the set room. More tricks,
- 10:54huh, you pull some fast one on me and your time. Nick.
- 10:56I listen. This is Gosmo. It's a little old lady and the
- 10:58friend of mine name is is Now. She'll explain how Patsy and I came
- 11:01to this case. Okay, okay, Nelson, You're sorry to bother you,
- 11:05but the place is empty. Where's the ol lady you're going to produce?
- 11:11Never mind shouting passing, I'm afraid missus Nelson's gone, And from the
- 11:15look in Matty's eyes, I'm afraid we're in a jam. A murder committed
- 11:26because of wallpaper, a killer who steals perfume bottles, and the disappearing witness.
- 11:31How is Nick going to straighten us out? With Sergeant Matheson barking over
- 11:33his shoulder, we'll see in just a moment. There's an old saying that
- 11:37if you want something done well, it's best to do it to yourself.
- 11:41But nowadays the truth is this, when you want your floors and linoleum to
- 11:45have perfect care, let Linax self polishing wax do the job. You see.
- 11:48Linax self polishing wax is completely new, developed by leading research chemists to
- 11:54give you the finest as you'll prove for yourself in one quick home test,

- 12:07handsome luster that lasts and lasts. First, you'll notice the satney beauty that
- 12:11only real wax can give. Second, when you step on that floor,
- 12:16you'll learn why Linax self polishing wax is called the anti skid finish, for
- 12:20your floor is less slippery than it wants to begin with. This fact has
- 12:24been proved by the underwriter's laboratories. On third, you'll be delighted with the
- 12:28way the finish lasts. For Linax self polishing wax has the highest possible content
- 12:33of genuine carnava wax. There's no doubt about it. Linax self polishing wax
- 12:37is well worth trying. Once you've tried it, you'll follow the example of
- 12:41all the wise American homemakers who use it regularly. Ask your dealer now for
- 12:46Linax self Polishing wax or all three great Linax home Brightness, the modern shortcuts
- 12:52to household care. And now back to our story. Investigating the strange complaint
- 13:07of Missus Nelson that her landlord has papered the walls of her room against her
- 13:11wishes, Nick discovers the landlord murdered. In the dead man's bedroom, Nick
- 13:15finds six bottles of expensive perfume, which are stolen by the killer. In
- 13:18the daring attack. Nick's pursuit of the killer is stopped by Sergeant Matheson,
- 13:22who arrives after an anonymous call told him of the murder and accused Nick.
- 13:26But when Nick tried to produce missus Nelson to prove his story, she vanished.
- 13:31Now, Nick, Patsy, and Matty meet in the front hall after
- 13:33searching the house. That it's no use, Nick, We've been through the
- 13:35house from top to bottom. It's empty, which means I'm accused of the
- 13:41murder and kidnapping. Now, I won't say that I know you're no crook,
- 13:43but I wouldn't put it past you the hijack of witness if you thought
- 13:46it would help you to solve the case. Not this time, may Well
- 13:50we're in place is issue. Travaby in the hands of the killer. Rababi
- 13:52grabbed her after we had duck into Harrow's bedroom under our noses and grabbed the
- 13:56perfume. Hey, what's all this about perfume and wallpaper? What's a connection?
- 14:00Nick? You are the policeman, Marry. I'm just an ordinary citizen.
- 14:03Nah nah, nah, don't take it that way. Nick. I
- 14:05never said you weren't useful. Now and then I just f just my little
- 14:09joke. Here's a setup. A murderer killed harro and tried to frame the
- 14:13death as a suicide. And this is Nelson's room right ever under the killer
- 14:16wanted to silence Harrow about what about why Harrold papered Missus Nelson's wall? So
- 14:20there is something hidden on the wall. There is something tied up with the
- 14:22bottles of perfume stolen from Harrow's room. Killer probably ducked out the back way
- 14:26with the bottles and missus Nelson. We day get up to Missus Nelson's room
- 14:30and get that wallpaper down right, we'll hold it some of the front door
- 14:33looks like a man stand by? Hi, have brother? Hey? What
- 14:39are you mister Spieler Wilson. Isn't this the best pitch man in the city.
- 14:43Sidewalkspiels and sales a specialty. What are you doing here? Spieler?
- 14:48GEEZU didn't you give me a scare for a minute. I ain't doing nothing
- 14:50here. I oughtn't I live here? You live here? How interesting,
- 14:54Maddie. Yeah, I suppose you have somebody get that wallpaper off Missus Nelson's
- 14:58walls. I just put on so recently that you should get it off.
- 15:00Without disturbing what's underneath it. Okay, Nick and Spieler, suppose we go
- 15:03up to your room. What fuck you about a murder? Well? That's
- 15:22what do you know about the lady who lives next door? Yeah, Nelson,
- 15:26we've been pals over a year. I got her job Albert the Maxwell
- 15:30plant. Yeah, that doesn't make sense, Spiller, and says Nelson,
- 15:33since you moved in here to be near a job to save traveling time,
- 15:35I wish should it make sense? I didn't say I didn't know her before
- 15:39she moved in. I got it a job and got her to live here.
- 15:41You know anything more about her? How she spent her time? Not
- 15:46much. She cleaned up in the plants from six to midnight, come home
- 15:50around one, didn't usually get up till ten. Used to hang around the
- 15:54house mostly, Hey, come on in, tell me Maddy. One last
- 16:00question, Spieler, how are you having that statuel you were caring when you
- 16:04came in? Mind if I have a look, no, mister Canneban,
- 16:08Well, it wouldn't interest you. If it's just the stuff I've been pitching
- 16:12on the States these days, wouldn't interest me? Would it be? Golly
- 16:21bottles and bottles? Of perfume. Well, I got most of the paper
- 16:37off Nick. Oh what a job that was. Incidentally, what did you
- 16:41get out of Spieler? Few interesting facts? Most interesting is the fact that
- 16:45he's pitching perfume these days. Well for the lover. What didn't the killers
- 16:51steal perfume from Harrow's room? Yes? What are we waiting for? Some
- 16:55real evidence? Coincidence? I have one of your men, Tail Wilson.
- 17:00Yes, what, Pussimary. You don't seem to understand. I want to
- 17:02break this case, and I want to do it. The promise is Nelson's
- 17:03hurt. He's been taken by the killer, and that means he isn't ready
- 17:07to kill her yet, but he may make up his mind soon. We've
- 17:10better get her before then. Yeah, how I must look at these walls.
- 17:15It's obvious I'm foul here that points to the killer. You better find
- 17:19it, Okay, plenty of calendar scenes, lots of colored papers. Ms
- 17:26Nelson had rather gaudy taste, call it bride. Oh, here are labels.
- 17:34He's looked like hat box designs. I'm over here, looks like drug
- 17:38labels, cooked narcotics. Maybe he only hears something. It's still a lot
- 17:44more interesting. Patsy, remember the name of the perfume stolen from Harrow's room.
- 17:48It was Paris is Danger. And the name of the perfume Speeler is
- 17:52selling Paris is Exotic. And here are labels, all from the Paris firm
- 17:56Exotic, Danger, Nuance and so on. But why did missus Nelson get
- 18:00hold of them? Well she she bought him, or she picked them up
- 18:04somewhere, or she isn't what I am. You can't buy exclusive firm labels,
- 18:08and she didn't pick this many up just somewhere. Why would you find
- 18:12fifty perfume labels all at once? Well maybe she got them off a perfume
- 18:17bottle, be suggestion. So far only one hits Patsy and the material missus
- 18:22Nelson had in her closet for decorating her words are ten more perfume labels and
- 18:26they're all grand new and usually it's in the backs, is fresh and untouched.
- 18:30For the love of Pete Nick, what's it me means Patsy and I
- 18:33are going down to the Paris company and find out where their labels are made.
- 18:36There's got to be a tie in between them and murder Madam and missus,
- 18:55it is announced you wish to seek with me on mat of us business.
- 18:59Yes, at your very kind of you, Madame Pis, you are
- 19:03Madame Peis. If we let me produce myself, I'm Nick Carter. This
- 19:07is my secretary, Miss Patsy Bowen. It's a great pleasure to meet you,
- 19:11Miss cat. Did you say Nick Carter? Be Nick Carter? That's
- 19:17right? Care for Madam Bear's your accent show? Who never mind the phony
- 19:19accent? That's for the customers. What's on your mind, mister Carter?
- 19:22It's a case of murder, and I think you may be able to tell
- 19:26me something that will help anything. Anything you say. Paris Incorporator is a
- 19:30pretty big outfort, one of the biggest cosmetic manufacturers in the world. Do
- 19:33you manufacture all your products yourself? We do? How about the containers,
- 19:37Oh, we make those two? Who does the packing and handle it?
- 19:40We do, print you on labels, design and print them ourselves. But
- 19:44I don't see what this has got to do with murder. A murder has
- 19:47been committed, and I think it's centers around some of your products. Will
- 19:49you tell me where this particular perfume label is designed and printed? Let's see
- 19:56it's not it. That's a funny thing, mister Carter. It's funny.
- 20:00We gave up that line more than a year ago. I'd say. We
- 20:03haven't manufactured any of these labels in over a year. Very interesting. Would
- 20:07there be any stock on hand, any place in the city where they could
- 20:11be obtained, mister Carter. Exclusive labels are like money. You keep them
- 20:14in a safe. There aren't any of these in stock, and if there
- 20:17were, they wouldn't be where anyone could get hold of them. Explain it
- 20:22all right, Thanks a lot, madam pass We won't trouble you anymore.
- 20:26It's been a pleasures. It has been a pleasure. Let me know,
- 20:33if you apprehend this murderer, I will name the perfume Masovik vice. Very
- 20:55yes, this is awful. Looks like we aren't going to get anywhere with
- 20:57this case. You're wrong. Get into the car. He's found something,
- 21:03even though Madam Paris Mada in Paris said plenty didn't. For the love of
- 21:08Pete again, they call it just driball I know. Get in, quit,
- 21:11keep your eye on him, keep the killer after us. Yes,
- 21:15can you still see the car? Yes, he's up ahead. Turney into
- 21:18that side street. What's the license number? Get it down. I can't
- 21:19see it. He said it with mud. Hold on, we're making the
- 21:22turn off the room. Okay, see him, I think so you're turning
- 21:26again. Up ahead. We'll get him. Say oh, correction, he
- 21:34got us. It's like the blown up front tire. She'd like ran through
- 21:37a mess of broken glass. That's too coincidental, it'd be real. Come
- 21:41on, Bessie, right, I have a look at that glass. An
- 21:45mister Killer's a very smart person. Massive broken glass thrown out behind this car
- 21:48would be just the thing to slow up, and it pursuers. And here
- 21:51we are sat the perfume model, famously the one stoles from Harrow's room,
- 21:57thrown overboard to save the killer a scrim. I'm afraid it didn't work this
- 22:02time. They want to know why. That's a why he goes? This
- 22:04is a side street and all I can smell is uncollected garbage. Nick,
- 22:07are you crazy? All right? Way till I call him maddam and get
- 22:11a police car and we'll call on the killer and let him explain himself.
- 22:30This is close enough, we'll get out here. I'm on, Paddy,
- 22:33How can I move my l right? Ready your next We go in here?
- 22:37Quiet? Please? Well? What in places is this place? We're
- 22:41coming in the back door of a walk planet. This is the department that
- 22:45prints labels and things. Want you here and the press is working. You
- 22:52need moment. Paris was lying when she said the client, we're going into
- 22:57this office here. I want you are to follow my lead? Right?
- 23:00Yeah? But Nick, here we go? Yes? What is it?
- 23:07Mister Maxwell? Yes? Who are you believe you've seen me before? I'm
- 23:11Nick Carter. What do you want, mister Carter? A confession? Confession
- 23:15of what have the murder of mister Harold, the kidnapping of Missus Nelson,
- 23:18and of the smartest racket ever worked in this city, counterfeitting valuable label.
- 23:22You're out of your mind, Carter? Out of my mind? Am I
- 23:26passy bringing missus Nelson? I'd see what mister Maxwell says when she confronts him.
- 23:33You've got Missus Nelson outside. Uh, you are fool You think that
- 23:37fluffill work on me. You haven't got we haven't got, mister Maxwell,
- 23:41go ahead, nothing You're going to say, Well you haven't got missus Nelson.
- 23:47Huh. Only one person could know that, mister Maxwell and that's the
- 23:49killer. The only way you could know whether that Missus Nelson has been rescued
- 23:52is because you yourself are heard the killer. In just a moment, Nick
- 24:03will be back to give you the final details of today's story and explain how

- 25:21one coat, dries in one hour. And now let's hear from Nick Carter
- 25:33himself. No, Nick, I was surprised when we found missus Nelson hidden
- 25:37away in Maxwell's plant as he did well, as I did uced earlier Patsey.
- 25:40Maxwell wasn't ready to kill her until he found out exactly how much she'd
- 25:42told us about his racket. He suspector because she brought me into the case.
- 25:47She really knew nothing about the point Patsy. On the side, Maxwell
- 25:51counterfeited rare and expensive labels. Missus Nelson used to pick them up while she
- 25:55was cleaning her on the planet. She brought them home the decorator walls,
- 25:57but he never realized anything shady was going on. No, of course,
- 26:02not now. Speeder Wilson bought his pony labels from Maxwell for the pony perfume
- 26:07he sold and when he saw some of those labels on Missus Nelson's walls,
- 26:11he waron Maxwell that someone else might see them and get wise to their racket.
- 26:15So to cover up quietly, Maxwell had harrow paper over the walls.
- 26:19Unfortunately, Harro probably got wise when he found the fresh labels on Missus Nelson's
- 26:23closet, the ones he was saving to put on the walls. He took
- 26:26some down with him and prepared pony bottles to perfume, tasted the labels on
- 26:30and had plenty of evidence to blackmail Maxwell. So Maxwell killed him and then
- 26:34came back to the bottles, and we were there right. All of Maxwell's
- 26:38efforts centered around covering up a million dollar racket. He killed Harro for this.
- 26:42He trailed me, and when it seemed I was furning out his secret
- 26:45at Madame Perris, try to kill me, Ny. That brings us to
- 26:48your crack about smelling garbage. After he stopped us by throwing those perfume bottles
- 26:52in front of our car, Well, that was obvious, Betsy, there'd
- 26:55been real perfume in those bottles. We'd just smelled nothing but perfume. As
- 26:57we didn't, it showed the bottle those contain doped up water, proving definitely
- 27:02that bottles perfumed labels were all cony. Oh well, Nick, what's doing
- 27:07you got the next week? Imagine next week we have a very strange case.
- 27:11I received a letter from a housemaid in a wealthy home on Park Avenue.
- 27:15Oh yeah, welcome back. Well not the first thing you think of
- 27:18when it comes to counterfeiting, but certainly an interesting crime and interesting solution.
- 27:26Perhaps more noteworthy than the case itself is kind of the shift we've seen from
- 27:33when Lieutenant Riley was the police foil to the current officer. As we're seeing
- 27:42less of the awe at the very bane of Nick Carter, which was really
- 27:48such a characteristic of Riley. Matheson is far less trusty, and this,
- 27:55of course is not on the level of a Helman Novak relationship, but it's
- 28:00a shift, and I think it probably brings a little bit more realism,
- 28:06or at least realism for the genre it's in. And it's going to be
- 28:10interesting to see because we have episodes of Nick Carter going all the way through
- 28:15nineteen forty nine. It'll be interesting to see how this show shifts. And
- 28:22I don't know how it is going to shift because I don't listened to any
- 28:26shows past what we've played today. See as the hard Boiled Private and I
- 28:32comes into play, how Nick Carter changes and adjusts to that. But we'll
- 28:37have more media concerns next week as we just bring you next week's episode of
- 28:41Nick Carter, and be sure and listen to us tomorrow for yours truly,
- 28:48Johnny Dollar. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen, a
