- 0:00But the father said to his servants, bring forth the best
- 0:04robe and put it on him and put a ring on his hand and shoes on
- 0:08his feet and bring hither the fatted, calf and kill it, and
- 0:12let us eat and be merry for this.
- 0:14My son was dead and is alive again.
- 0:17He was lost and is found, hey, listeners.
- 0:20This is Nick from scripture Central.
- 0:22And today's podcast addresses, the question, how does the
- 0:25parable of the Prodigal Son? Teach us about repentance As
- 0:31Jesus was teaching on one occasion, a large crowd,
- 0:34followed him, a large part of this crowd included publicans
- 0:38and sinners interested in hearing the gospel, which
- 0:41angered the Pharisees and Sadducees who were present and
- 0:44led them to murmur among themselves and say this man
- 0:47receiveth Sinners and eateth with them.
- 0:50This comment Drew out, three Parables from Jesus about
- 0:53repentance and joy. The final of the three often
- 0:56called the parable of the Prodigal Son.
- 0:59Clearly exemplifies. The need All people have for
- 1:02repentance by demonstrating how to different sons of a loving,
- 1:05father, both needed and obtained his Mercy.
- 1:10According to this. Parable, a certain man had two
- 1:12sons and the younger of them said to his father, father, give
- 1:16me the portion of goods that falleth to me, and he divided
- 1:19unto them, his living, and not many days after the younger, son
- 1:23gathered, all together and took his journey into a far country,
- 1:27and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
- 1:31As John and Jenni Welch of noted.
- 1:33This Parable is a story about getting lost really lost.
- 1:37Unlike the sheep that cluelessly wanders off and gets physically
- 1:41lost. And unlike the coin that has
- 1:44nothing at all to do with being dropped out of sight.
- 1:46In some dusty Corner. The younger son had left his
- 1:50home intentionally rebelliously and insolently, he got himself
- 1:55lost in a spiritual way. That only he can undo, he took
- 1:59his share of the families. Inheritance and went and
- 2:02consumed. It and right is living this
- 2:05younger Sons Pride. However, would cause him a great
- 2:07deal of suffering, the parable continues.
- 2:10And when he had spent all there arose, a mighty famine in that
- 2:14land and he began to be in want and he went and joined himself
- 2:19to a citizen of that country and he sent him into his fields to
- 2:22feed swine and he would Fain have filled his belly with the
- 2:26husks that the swine did eat and no man gave unto him.
- 2:30The sad state of this son's life.
- 2:32At this point is made especially clear in a later talmudic
- 2:36proverb curse. Does the person who raises pigs
- 2:39and cursed is the person who teaches his son, Greek, wisdom
- 2:44of this Sons dire position in life caused especially by his
- 2:48many poor choices Elder. Je, Jensen once observed to fall
- 2:52that low could only illustrate with even greater power, the
- 2:56main theme of the parable can a swineherd ER, someone Who
- 3:00occupies a bass viol degrading position be accepted be forgiven
- 3:06and be permitted to rejoice in the presence of the angels of
- 3:09God. The answer of course is yes, no
- 3:12matter how lost this son was. His father was concerned for him
- 3:16with an infinite love. Ultimately, the Sun comes to his
- 3:20senses and makes a long humbling Trek home though.
- 3:23The sun was willing to be a servant to his father when he
- 3:27was yet a great way off his father saw him and had
- 3:30compassion. Ocean and ran and fell on his
- 3:32neck and kissed him. The father, then kills the
- 3:35fatted. Sacrificial, calf and holds a
- 3:38great feast celebrating the return of his wayward son.
- 3:42In this sense, the father in this, Parable is representative
- 3:45of God. The father was patient,
- 3:47generous, embracing and joyous, most of all he was filled with
- 3:52compassion. Such traits perfectly exemplify,
- 3:56God's love, and concern for all of us.
- 3:59As such the details in this story, telling the steps taken
- 4:02by the desperate younger son perfectly show, how one can
- 4:06repent repair and rebuild a broken relationship of mutual,
- 4:11trust in many ways, the younger son represents everyone for all
- 4:16have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
- 4:19We are all in need of repentance and at various times in our
- 4:22lives will need to Come to ourselves and recognize what we
- 4:26have to do to repent change and return home.
- 4:31However, often overlooked in this Parable is the situation of
- 4:34the Elder son. Who remained faithful to his
- 4:37father for many long years as this.
- 4:39Parable portrays, this son was likewise lost and needed his
- 4:44father to come out to save him to, with the Elder, son heard
- 4:48that his younger brother had come home, he was angry and
- 4:51would not go in there for came his Other out and entreated him
- 4:56angry and perhaps rightfully indignant at his brothers,
- 4:59foolishness and disrespect for their father, in the whole
- 5:03family for many long years. He was unable to see the
- 5:06troubles and subsequent deep repentance that.
- 5:09His brother had experienced as Elder Jensen, observes the fact
- 5:14that the father left the festivity which he did not have
- 5:17to do, and entreated, his son is evidence to me of the mercy and
- 5:22condescension of God, the Father in his Earnest pleadings with
- 5:26his son, he reassures him, son, thou art ever with me and all
- 5:31that I have is thine and urges him to look compassionately on
- 5:35his brother who had spent years in a state of spiritual death.
- 5:39For this thy brother was dead and is alive again and was lost
- 5:44and is found such a pleading, would have been an effective
- 5:47rebuke against the unforgiving Pharisees in Jesus is audience
- 5:51to whom these three Parables were Really directed.
- 5:55Ultimately, it was they who reflected the attitudes of the
- 5:58Elder son, most of all. And both the father, and the son
- 6:02desired, their repentance just as much as the repentance of the
- 6:06publicans and sinners. The Savior held out hope for
- 6:09them. If they would be entreated, they
- 6:11could enjoy the blessings of Heaven.
- 6:13If they would accept and follow the counsel of the father, he
- 6:17would say, all that I have is thine.
- 6:20If they refuse to accept the message, they're hypocritical.
- 6:24So self-righteous attitude like that of the Elder son would lead
- 6:28to their destruction. King Benjamin once posed the
- 6:31question are we not all Beggars? Such a question effectively
- 6:35describes how we should read this Parable.
- 6:38All of us, whether we have wandered off the Covenant path
- 6:41for a time or have remained dutifully obedient to.
- 6:44Our Heavenly Father are in need of Salvation.
- 6:47We all depend on Jesus Christ and his atonement every day of
- 6:52Our Lives Eldridge. Jeffrey are Holland described,
- 6:55the two sons of this story. Certainly, the younger brother
- 6:59had been a prisoner, a prisoner of sin stupidity and pigsty.
- 7:04But the older brother lives in some confinement to he has, as
- 7:08yet been unable to break out of the prison of himself.
- 7:12He is haunted by the green-eyed monster of jealousy.
- 7:16He feels taken for granted by his father and disenfranchised
- 7:20by his brother. When neither is the case.
- 7:23However, despite our wayward and lost condition and no matter our
- 7:27circumstances, the father will treat us with joy and love the
- 7:32father. In this story does not tantalize
- 7:35his children, he does not mercilessly measure them,
- 7:37against their neighbors. He doesn't even compare them
- 7:40with each other. His gestures of compassion
- 7:43toward one, do not require withdrawal or denial of love for
- 7:47the other. He is divinely generous to both
- 7:50of these Sons toward both of his Children.
- 7:53He extends charity ultimately the Lord's.
- 7:56Mercy. And compassion are extended to
- 7:59all of his children who come unto him and strive to forgive
- 8:03as he forgives rather than being envious of a wayward ones
- 8:07return. Everyone can generously Rejoice
- 8:10together with our father and the entire Human family upon the
- 8:13return of any other offering sincerely, the sacrifice of a
- 8:17broken heart and a contrite forgiving spirit.
