- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Thursday, it's the 16th
- 0:16of April, and you have tapped on play and invited me into your
- 0:21day. No matter whether you are just
- 0:23starting out in the thick of things or cooling down at the
- 0:27end of the day. So great that you have invited
- 0:30me and so great to have your company as we continue on this
- 0:34incredible journey as God is giving His people the lands that
- 0:39they are inheriting. And have you ever had a
- 0:42situation where everything is just going so well and you're
- 0:44like, oh, how long is my luck going to last?
- 0:47This is so good. Well, today, unfortunately, this
- 0:51dream run of obedience and God's people just doing the right
- 0:55thing comes to an end and we encounter our first hiccup in
- 1:00the book of Joshua and we see how God deals with that and then
- 1:04how Israel responds to that. So this is a bit more like the
- 1:09ups and downs of our lives. Let's see how this plays out as
- 1:13we read together Joshua Chapter 7.
- 1:26But Israel violated the instructions about the things
- 1:29set apart for the Lord. A man named Akan had stolen some
- 1:34of these dedicated things. So the Lord is very angry with
- 1:37the Israelites. Akan was the son of Kami, a
- 1:41descendant of Zimri, son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah.
- 1:47Joshua sent some of his men from Jericho to spy out the town of
- 1:51I, east of Bethel, near Beth Haven.
- 1:55When they returned, they told Joshua there's no need for all
- 1:59of us to go up there. It won't take more than two or
- 2:01three thousand men to attack I, since there are so few of them,
- 2:05Don't make all our people struggle to go up there.
- 2:08So approximately 3000 warriors were sent, but they were soundly
- 2:13defeated. The men of I chased the
- 2:16Israelites from the town gate as far as the quarries, and they
- 2:20killed about 36 who were retreating down the slope.
- 2:23The Israelites were paralysed with fear at this turn of
- 2:26events, and their courage melted away.
- 2:30Joshua and the elders of Israel tore their clothing in dismay,
- 2:34threw dust on their heads, and bowed face down to the ground
- 2:37before the ark of the Lord until evening.
- 2:40Then Joshua cried out. O sovereign Lord, why did you
- 2:45bring us across the Jordan River if you were going to let the
- 2:48amorite kill us? If only we had been content to
- 2:51stay on the other side. Lord, what can I say now that
- 2:55Israel has fled from its enemies?
- 2:58For when the Canaanites and all the other people living in the
- 3:00land hear about it, they will surround us and wipe our name
- 3:05off the face of the earth. And then what will happen to the
- 3:08honour of your great name? But the Lord said to Joshua, get
- 3:14up. Why are you lying on your face
- 3:16like this? Israel has sinned and broken my
- 3:20covenant. They have stolen some of the
- 3:22things that I commanded must be set apart for me, and they have
- 3:27not only stolen them, but have lied about it and hidden these
- 3:31things among their own belongings.
- 3:34That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in
- 3:36defeat. For now, Israel itself has been
- 3:40set apart for destruction. I will not remain with you any
- 3:45longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set
- 3:48apart for destruction. Get up, command the people to
- 3:53purify themselves in preparation for tomorrow.
- 3:56For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says.
- 4:00Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the Lord.
- 4:05You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these
- 4:08things from among you. In the morning you must present
- 4:12yourself by tribes, and the Lord will point out the tribe to
- 4:16which the guilty man belongs. That tribe must come forward
- 4:20with its clans, and the Lord will point out the guilty clan.
- 4:24That clan will then come forward, and the Lord will point
- 4:27out the guilty family. Finally, each member of the
- 4:31guilty family must come forward one by one.
- 4:34The one who has stolen what was set apart for destruction will
- 4:38himself be burned with fire, along with everything he has,
- 4:42for he has broken the covenant of the Lord and has done a
- 4:46horrible thing in Israel. Early the next morning, Joshua
- 4:51brought the tribes of Israel before the Lord, and the tribe
- 4:54of Judah was singled out. Then the clans of Judah came
- 4:58forward, and the clan of Zerah was singled out.
- 5:02When the families of Zerah came forward, the family of Zimri was
- 5:06singled out. Every member of Zimri's family
- 5:09was brought forward person by person, and Akan was singled
- 5:14out. Then Joshua said to Akan, My
- 5:17son, give glory to the Lord the God of Israel by telling the
- 5:22truth. Make your confession and tell me
- 5:25what you have done. Don't hide it from me, Aiken
- 5:28replied. It is true I have sinned against
- 5:32the Lord the God of Israel. Among the plunder I saw a
- 5:35beautiful robe from Babylon, 200 silver coins, and a bar of gold
- 5:41weighing more than a pound. I wanted them so much that I
- 5:45took them. They are hidden in the ground
- 5:48beneath my tent, with the silver buried deeper than the rest.
- 5:52So Joshua sent some men to make a search.
- 5:55They ran to the tent and found the stolen goods hidden there,
- 5:59just as Akan had said, with the silver buried beneath the rest.
- 6:03They took the things from the tent and brought them to Joshua
- 6:07and all the Israelites. Then they laid them on the
- 6:10ground in the presence of the Lord.
- 6:12Then Joshua and all the Israelites took Akan the silver,
- 6:17the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, cattle,
- 6:21donkeys, sheep, goats, tent, and everything he had, and they
- 6:26brought them to the valley of Achor.
- 6:29Then Joshua said to Akan, Why have you brought trouble on us?
- 6:33The Lord will now bring trouble on you.
- 6:36And all the Israelites stoned Akan and his family and burned
- 6:41their bodies. They piled a great heap of
- 6:43stones over Akan, which remains to this day.
- 6:47That is why the place has been called the Valley of Trouble
- 6:51ever since. So the Lord was no longer angry.
- 7:05Oh Lord, this is a tough story. And as we hear this, we are so
- 7:10aware that you have this perfect expectation because you are
- 7:16perfect and we are not. And when we fail, somehow things
- 7:23need to be brought back to the way they need to be.
- 7:27And under this old covenant, Lord, that was done in this
- 7:30brutal way of eradicating not only the one who sins, but their
- 7:35family as well. But Lord, here we are living
- 7:39under a new covenant where in order for us to achieve this
- 7:43perfection, we are covered over by your perfection, Jesus, by
- 7:49your perfect life and your perfect sacrifice on our behalf
- 7:54so that debt is paid for every sin that we commit and in the
- 8:00future will commit. Lord, you have taken that from
- 8:04us and you present us perfect before God.
- 8:08And God is no longer angry, but God is overwhelmed by love for
- 8:15us. Oh, what a beautiful gift you
- 8:18give us. And we are so grateful that you
- 8:22do this in your generosity and love for us, Jesus.
- 8:26And so we praise you and we thank you, and we pray all of
- 8:30this in your perfect and saving name, Amen.
