- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Scott Brady, and I'm joined today by Steve Edwards. Now,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Steve is one of our editors on Expedition Portal and
- 0:15Speaker 1: he is at the Overland Expo Mountain West with me
- 0:19Speaker 1: this weekend. We spent a few days around the event,
- 0:22Speaker 1: got to see the new equipment, new vehicles, interesting new
- 0:26Speaker 1: projects that are available at this event. We got to
- 0:29Speaker 1: talk a little bit about how the event's doing, some
- 0:31Speaker 1: things that we saw that we really liked, and some
- 0:33Speaker 1: things that we'd like to see improved. But overall, we
- 0:36Speaker 1: really enjoyed our time at the Overland expot Mountain West,
- 0:39Speaker 1: so please enjoy my conversation with Steve. I also wanted
- 0:44Speaker 1: to take a brief moment to thank all of you

- 1:47Speaker 1: thanks so much for being on the Overland Journal podcast.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I just had what about a twenty minute wrestling match
- 1:54Speaker 1: with some DGI Mike, So, DGI, if you're listening, we
- 1:58Speaker 1: really need some help. This is the second time this
- 2:01Speaker 1: has happened to me, first time on a production, now
- 2:03Speaker 1: on a podcast where these little mics they just go
- 2:05Speaker 1: into like a loop where they will not clear and
- 2:08Speaker 1: just record on their own. And that's one of the
- 2:10Speaker 1: things that I really like about the DGI mics is
- 2:13Speaker 1: that they'll also record internally, so you have some redundancy
- 2:18Speaker 1: of the audio, so it's recording in the camera but
- 2:21Speaker 1: also recording in the mic. We made technology challenges get exactly. Yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we made it. We made it work. But we are
- 2:29Speaker 1: here at the Overland Expo Mountain West. We have a
- 2:33Speaker 1: booth here where we have some snowpeak gear that we've
- 2:37Speaker 1: been using in our various booths. And then we've also
- 2:40Speaker 1: got the Anios Grenadier quarter Master with the new Scout
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yoho pop up.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yeah, really exciting. It's been a lot of traffic area.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It has been a really popular stand and a lot
- 2:53Speaker 1: of photographs, a lot of video of the vehicle. And
- 2:56Speaker 1: I think it's because both of these products really capture
- 3:02Speaker 1: a lot of the fundamentals of what we look for
- 3:04Speaker 1: in an over end VFLE Which is not to suggest
- 3:07Speaker 1: that either the camper or the truck is a superior choice.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I just think that maybe the combination and a lot
- 3:14Speaker 1: of the intention behind both products is that of being
- 3:17Speaker 1: a little more simple, a little more capable, a little
- 3:20Speaker 1: bit easier to integrate, fewer systems to go wrong, and
- 3:26Speaker 1: that it certainly applies to the quarter Master as well.
- 3:29Speaker 1: But it's funny how the Scout is nearly the same
- 3:33Speaker 1: color as Yes.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I was surprised when I came around the corner on
- 3:36Speaker 2: the first day and saw it. I thought they paint match. Yeah,
- 3:41Speaker 2: this scout. The Scout's a very close.
- 3:43Speaker 1: The Scout's about one shade cooler, and yeah, the quarter
- 3:47Speaker 1: Master is about one shade warmth.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's pretty yeah, but they look great together.
- 3:52Speaker 2: And just the low profile of the Scout, yeah, I
- 3:55Speaker 2: think yeah, speaks to that simplicity and that sort of
- 3:58Speaker 2: readiness to hit the trail. All right. But yeah, it's
- 4:01Speaker 2: a really great combination. And yeah, like I said, it's
- 4:03Speaker 2: been Yeah, it's had a lot of ton of attention
- 4:05Speaker 2: and it'd be interesting to see. I think this. They've
- 4:09Speaker 2: got another Yoho at another stand here as well. I've
- 4:12Speaker 2: seen people crawling all over it, and.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I think out's got it should be pretty vehicles on
- 4:16Speaker 1: display successful, but even four wheel campers has a great stand.
- 4:20Speaker 1: And they got this classic Plymouth.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Oh really something like that.
- 4:25Speaker 1: With a with an old school four WORL camper on it.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And that was some of my earliest memories of my childhood.
- 4:31Speaker 1: My dad actually had a four wal Camperor Granby on
- 4:34Speaker 1: the back of his four pickup because it was lightweight
- 4:37Speaker 1: and low profile when he pulled his horse trailers. Oh sure, Yeah,
- 4:40Speaker 1: some of my first camping memories was actually in a
- 4:43Speaker 1: four wheel camper a long time ago. So It's been
- 4:46Speaker 1: interesting to see our industry grow so rapidly and develop
- 4:51Speaker 1: so many new products. It's probably not a good idea
- 4:54Speaker 1: to release a new either habitat style Tacoma camper or
- 5:00Speaker 1: or a tear drop, because there's about eight hundred of
- 5:02Speaker 1: each one of those.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I was going to say that a big theme for
- 5:05Speaker 2: the show this year, I think is the lightweight camper.
- 5:08Speaker 2: There's a ton of them now, all different kinds of flavors,
- 5:11Speaker 2: pop ups and rigid sides, and the.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Rigid side stuff is really interesting. I think that has
- 5:17Speaker 1: some potential, especially for colder climates, So I think that
- 5:20Speaker 1: those kinds of offerings will do well. But otherwise you're
- 5:25Speaker 1: just looking at thirty one flavors. There are so many
- 5:27Speaker 1: different options, yeah, that are available for those, and it's
- 5:31Speaker 1: difficult to make a business use case once you get
- 5:33Speaker 1: that degree of market penetration and saturation where you're just
- 5:37Speaker 1: really diluting what is already a finite customer base. And
- 5:41Speaker 1: you compound that with the fact that most of those
- 5:44Speaker 1: campers are going to be financed, probably on a helock
- 5:47Speaker 1: or financed in some other way, and interest rates are
- 5:50Speaker 1: quite high. We're seeing anything that you kind of transactional
- 5:55Speaker 1: products we're seeing really taking a nice uptick in the industry,
- 5:59Speaker 1: But anything that's more expensive where you're going to have
- 6:02Speaker 1: some legitimate financing behind it it, we're seeing still a
- 6:05Speaker 1: lot of slowness. You have cash buyers always, those are
- 6:08Speaker 1: going to continue to buy. But the really extensive vehicle builds,
- 6:12Speaker 1: a really expensive campers, really expensive integrated expedition vehicles, trailers,
- 6:18Speaker 1: those are all seen about a thirty percent slow down.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and I think you're right. I've seen a
- 6:23Speaker 2: lot of folks at this expo carrying shopping dykes. They
- 6:26Speaker 2: bought an air compressor or a camp pillow or those
- 6:30Speaker 2: kinds of things to whatever shore up their current build
- 6:33Speaker 2: or to build out their camping situation. But yeah, I
- 6:37Speaker 2: think you're probably right about that.
- 6:39Speaker 1: And I still think we're a few months, two, three,
- 6:41Speaker 1: four or five months away from that part of the
- 6:44Speaker 1: industry starting to level off and come back up again.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I think, especially once interest rates start to drop or
- 6:50Speaker 1: just general consumer sentiment starts to settle in, particularly once
- 6:53Speaker 1: people can get more competitive financing, then you'll see those
- 6:56Speaker 1: larger ticket items items start to cellibate.
- 6:59Speaker 2: And I think there's always thinking just in terms of
- 7:01Speaker 2: we're an election year. I think sometimes people draw down
- 7:03Speaker 2: their large purchases and those kinds of things in the
- 7:06Speaker 2: face of political uncertainty. And so once the election is
- 7:09Speaker 2: put to bed, I think, yeah, I think we'll see
- 7:11Speaker 2: some more stability in that.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Ye, yeah, exactly, talking about both sides of on. Then
- 7:17Speaker 1: I think people do really settle down.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, same way the markets do, and yeah exactly. Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Sure, So tell me what you've seen so far that
- 7:25Speaker 1: you really liked.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah, some of your favorites. I think one of the
- 7:28Speaker 2: interesting things about this expo in Colorado is that I
- 7:31Speaker 2: always see a ton of Colorado businesses, just a lot
- 7:34Speaker 2: of entrepreneurship, a lot of folks who are doing not
- 7:38Speaker 2: even necessarily big, huge, ambitious projects. But say, for example,
- 7:43Speaker 2: one couple that i'd met, their products called the topper tent.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Very simple, and it's simply a tent structure that you
- 7:50Speaker 2: attached to your truck. Topper, but that allows you to
- 7:53Speaker 2: put a mattress into the back of a pickup truck
- 7:57Speaker 2: that extends out to the bed. So it's just a
- 7:59Speaker 2: tent to go over the tailgate, right, simple product. A
- 8:04Speaker 2: moment of inspiration, she goes into her sewing room, and
- 8:07Speaker 2: whip's worn up and has a prototype, tries it out
- 8:10Speaker 2: and now and they're being made here in Colorado. But's
- 8:13Speaker 2: even more complex products that require a ton of manufacturing
- 8:17Speaker 2: and expertise, which I think the Colorado Front Range is
- 8:19Speaker 2: a lot of skilled workforce and that kind of thing.
- 8:22Speaker 2: So like tune Outdoor, for example, is another one. There's
- 8:25Speaker 2: so many places super tramps yeah exactly, Yeah, super Tram makes.
- 8:28Speaker 1: A great pop up truck camper exactly. And there's just
- 8:31Speaker 1: I think there's just a lot of adventure minded people
- 8:34Speaker 1: and businesses here in Colorado. Yep. That's one of the
- 8:37Speaker 1: things that I've noticed about this event that's a little
- 8:39Speaker 1: bit different than some of the other events is that
- 8:42Speaker 1: when you go to flag Staff, like one out of
- 8:45Speaker 1: probably twenty live in Flagstaff, right, maybe one out of
- 8:49Speaker 1: ten live in Phoenix, but the majority of people are
- 8:52Speaker 1: coming from the desert, southwest California or internationally kind of
- 8:57Speaker 1: descend on what's the flagship event for them in the year.
- 9:02Speaker 1: But then I noticed that here in Colorado, one out
- 9:05Speaker 1: of every two people I talked to live in Colorado.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah, they're in Boulder right very close.
- 9:12Speaker 1: So I think that's neat. I think it's neat to
- 9:13Speaker 1: see a more of a local representation. I think that
- 9:17Speaker 1: there's a lot of vendors here. I'm only about two
- 9:19Speaker 1: thirds of the way through the show and there's still
- 9:22Speaker 1: more to see. Yeah, there's a lot of vendor representation here.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Everything from I saw lenses being shown to composting toilets
- 9:32Speaker 1: that you'd use in the sailboat or using their overland vehicle,
- 9:36Speaker 1: all the way to body wipes and everything in between.
- 9:38Speaker 1: A bunch of different manufacturers are represented, which is always encouraging,
- 9:42Speaker 1: yep to see at this event. Definitely more of a
- 9:45Speaker 1: regional event, but a positive one.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and also just some creative approaches too. There
- 9:50Speaker 2: was a retailer called Vanbjorn b a n I believe
- 9:55Speaker 2: is the spelling, and they were doing a gear repair service,
- 9:58Speaker 2: so you could bring your tour jacket or you're sleeping
- 10:01Speaker 2: bag or other sorts of gear, and they had a
- 10:04Speaker 2: woman with a selling machine and they were doing just
- 10:06Speaker 2: like gear repair. It's a really cool, a different way
- 10:09Speaker 2: of approaching the event. And I like this idea of
- 10:12Speaker 2: keeping the gear you have instead of buying.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Stuff servicing it.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Oh, was exactly nice.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And that kind of stuff. But then you also see
- 10:21Speaker 1: what I think to be some consolidation within the expedition
- 10:24Speaker 1: camper space. You know, earth Cruisers no longer going nimble
- 10:28Speaker 1: has really changed their emphasis, so there's been some consolidation.
- 10:32Speaker 1: But if you look at Storyteller, they're making the vans,
- 10:35Speaker 1: they're also making the big expedition.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Vehicles, and they bought Taxa yeah, and there's a couple
- 10:41Speaker 2: of other smaller manufacturers, which is smart.
- 10:43Speaker 1: So they're really starting to they're building out a book
- 10:46Speaker 1: of business yep, that's going to meet a lot of
- 10:48Speaker 1: different people's needs. But then you see like Adrenaline Industries
- 10:52Speaker 1: that is building on heavy duty like Ram five fifties
- 10:57Speaker 1: or Ford F five fifties, five hundred rams excuse me,
- 11:01Speaker 1: or Ford F five yes, and they're putting these relatively
- 11:04Speaker 1: lightweight campers on top. So they're coming in even a
- 11:07Speaker 1: little bit less than an Earth Roamer with a lot
- 11:10Speaker 1: of space on the inside. And he's really robust, reinforced corners.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So I really like what Adrenaline Industries is doing. And
- 11:18Speaker 1: jud the guy who runs it, he's just a passionate
- 11:20Speaker 1: overlander and outdoorsmen and vehicle.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah. Drop a nickel on that guy, right, Yeah, Yeah, totally.
- 11:28Speaker 1: He builds super fun vehicles and like an Audi rally car, Yeah, exactly.
- 11:32Speaker 2: He feels like he does it for himself.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you can having fun with that for sure, and
- 11:36Speaker 1: it comes across that way, and there's a lot of
- 11:38Speaker 1: his family members that are involved, so they're really enjoying it,
- 11:42Speaker 1: and I think that's something that the industry needs more of.
- 11:46Speaker 1: When this all got started, I remember when Bill Swale's
- 11:49Speaker 1: started earth Roamer, Like the guy just had so much passion.
- 11:53Speaker 1: He had enough money where he could have not worked again,
- 11:55Speaker 1: but he chose to just follow his not only as instinct,
- 11:59Speaker 1: but the thing that he was really enthusiastic about, and
- 12:03Speaker 1: he built something that stood the test of time when
- 12:06Speaker 1: earth Roamer is still considered a pre eminent brand. Yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 1: of course, real significant loss with the loss of Bill.
- 12:13Speaker 1: But those are the places in the industry where I'm
- 12:15Speaker 1: seeing quite a bit of success where you've got the
- 12:19Speaker 1: company's properly funded, you have a really enthusiastic executive suite,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and in some cases unique products from white Space that
- 12:27Speaker 1: they're addressing. So that's really encouraging this.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and just like ongoing innovation right in terms of
- 12:33Speaker 2: the way that the vehicles are designed and the way
- 12:36Speaker 2: that they're they're executed. They're not just sitting on their butts,
- 12:40Speaker 2: and that reflects the competitive nature of the industry right now.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You're saying like there's a million tear drop trailers and
- 12:45Speaker 2: but even at that high end, you're talking earth Romer,
- 12:47Speaker 2: you're talking adrenaline like there' that's pretty competitive space. And
- 12:51Speaker 2: you know a small number right of buyers.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Who has never been a better time to be an
- 12:57Speaker 1: overland traveler that's looking to buy something because the offerings
- 13:01Speaker 1: are extensive.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Like Bliss or Ross Munster right there.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Pretty much anything you want to pick from. Yeah, and
- 13:06Speaker 1: there's some really neat ones out there that I think
- 13:09Speaker 1: have a lot of opportunity in the industry. At Kimberly
- 13:12Speaker 1: Camps are back and yeah, those are really the fold
- 13:15Speaker 1: and those are heavy duty Australian built ones. Patriots making
- 13:19Speaker 1: more and more different offerings. So there's you're seeing a
- 13:22Speaker 1: lot of movement. But what I also like right now
- 13:24Speaker 1: is I'm seeing people that are solving specific problems in
- 13:29Speaker 1: the industry. So for example, like the new Canyon, the
- 13:33Speaker 1: new ZR two Bison, they can come with a thirty
- 13:37Speaker 1: five inches tall tire that doesn't fit underneath the truck,
- 13:40Speaker 1: so it's got to go in the bed. That's a
- 13:41Speaker 1: problem if you want to put on that goat, put
- 13:44Speaker 1: on a go fast or something like that. The spare
- 13:46Speaker 1: tires in the bed. But I just was I just
- 13:48Speaker 1: went by the Expedition one booth and they're making a
- 13:51Speaker 1: rear bumper for those vehicles with a swing out, So
- 13:54Speaker 1: now you can address that. You do have to be
- 13:56Speaker 1: very mindful of payload in these midsize trucks, but.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Right, really, yeah, they're.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Paying attention to the kind of solving problems. So what
- 14:05Speaker 1: are some things that you've seen that you're like, I'd buy.
- 14:07Speaker 2: That, Yeah, totally. I think one of the ones I
- 14:09Speaker 2: was looking at that was super interested in was these
- 14:11Speaker 2: lightner design racks. I think the rack spaces is an
- 14:16Speaker 2: area where it's difficult to like really create some like
- 14:20Speaker 2: new innovative products and the modularity the lightning racks, but
- 14:25Speaker 2: then also the bedracks and then also roof racks. And
- 14:29Speaker 2: then they have got a suite of here that can
- 14:33Speaker 2: attach to it accessories from water tanks and tool holders
- 14:37Speaker 2: and stuff for roto packs and that kind of stuff
- 14:40Speaker 2: which is common across the roof rack area, but they
- 14:43Speaker 2: have these easily movable slats, right, so you can readjust
- 14:48Speaker 2: and move where you need your support to be you've
- 14:51Speaker 2: got a sun roof or whatever. And then all the
- 14:54Speaker 2: t tracks are universal as well, so you have accessories
- 14:57Speaker 2: from other brands, you can add those on without any
- 15:00Speaker 2: kind of issue as lights not high quality. Yeah, and
- 15:05Speaker 2: I don't have a rack on my defender right now,
- 15:06Speaker 2: so I was highball on that, just like really the flexibility,
- 15:10Speaker 2: right because I think so for example, I'm still I'm
- 15:13Speaker 2: testing this Tomatic roof tent, but eventually i won't have
- 15:15Speaker 2: it anymore and I'm going to have another something else
- 15:18Speaker 2: and it needs to go on my roof, and I'm
- 15:19Speaker 2: going to have to do all these changes because I'm
- 15:21Speaker 2: reviewing products in the magazine and for their website and
- 15:24Speaker 2: roof access and like lightners is like really appealing because
- 15:27Speaker 2: it allows me some flexibility to change up your your
- 15:29Speaker 2: situation up there. And lightweight just like really innovative stuff
- 15:33Speaker 2: in terms of being able to run wiring. Do you
- 15:35Speaker 2: want to do lights or other stuff that needs power
- 15:38Speaker 2: on the roof? Really really like clean design, low profile,
- 15:42Speaker 2: So yeah, that caught my eye for sure. These I
- 15:44Speaker 2: think you had a little Instagram reel on the one
- 15:48Speaker 2: up racks. They've got a new prototype.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I'm such a fan of Yeah. I do think that
- 15:53Speaker 1: they sold relatively recently, which congrats to the original the founders,
- 15:58Speaker 1: because it was I use it almost every day with
- 16:01Speaker 1: my mountain bike. Yeah. It is just like the go
- 16:04Speaker 1: to mountain bike rack. And then they made one a
- 16:08Speaker 1: little bit bigger for the fat tire bikes. And then
- 16:10Speaker 1: they made one a little bit bigger for like e
- 16:12Speaker 1: bikes yeah, and or really really lightweight electric motorcycles yep.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And now they just came out with and they have
- 16:19Speaker 1: the prototype here, but they came out with a motorcycle
- 16:21Speaker 1: rack and they had a Honda six to fifty on it. Yeah.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I s six to fifty on there and it, Yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 2: it looked pretty.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Robust to me. It didn't seem to care.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, in the back of a Porsche, right.
- 16:34Speaker 1: It was like a giant sized one up. Yeah, and
- 16:38Speaker 1: so it had a lot of the same features but
- 16:41Speaker 1: just monster size.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Yeah, super cool motorcycles. So I'm excited about that because
- 16:46Speaker 1: that there's such a and and for all of their racks,
- 16:49Speaker 1: a lot of people in our industry and our community
- 16:52Speaker 1: ride mountain bikes. Yes, great mountain bike mount I'm seeing
- 16:56Speaker 1: more and more larger vehicles that are having like smaller
- 17:00Speaker 1: e bikes. They're taking like electric motorcycles on the back
- 17:03Speaker 1: and they have a rack for that so that the
- 17:05Speaker 1: whole package is a little bit lighter. Yeah, and then
- 17:07Speaker 1: of course if you want to bring I don't know
- 17:09Speaker 1: what the weight capacity is on that prototype. Yeah, a
- 17:12Speaker 1: six fifty L is a pretty heavy bike. Yeah, it
- 17:15Speaker 1: looks like you could probably get most of those midweight
- 17:19Speaker 1: dual sports on there. Maybe not I can put your
- 17:22Speaker 1: gs on there, yes, but maybe not a full adventure bike,
- 17:25Speaker 1: but something that starts to get pretty close. So that
- 17:29Speaker 1: was something I thought was really cool.
- 17:31Speaker 2: And then because I think especially yeah, because where I
- 17:33Speaker 2: live in Montana too. Yeah, big mountain biking community, and yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 2: everybody's got one up. It's just it's the rack.
- 17:39Speaker 1: They just they just work, they just work. And the
- 17:42Speaker 1: fact how they attached in the receiver hitch with that
- 17:45Speaker 1: kind of proprietary allen key, like it's very difficult to steal.
- 17:49Speaker 1: But it also puts this side pressure in the receiver
- 17:53Speaker 1: hitch that reduces a lot of the rattles and the
- 17:56Speaker 1: shifting and all that other.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Stuff, so I'm guessing the motorcycle rack will have those
- 18:01Speaker 2: same type of Another.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Thing I thought was cool. LEOT has a bunch of
- 18:06Speaker 1: their new motorcycle suits and their new motorcycle helmets. So
- 18:11Speaker 1: LEOT is really known for their safety equipment, which includes
- 18:15Speaker 1: like their neck braces and which they work so well.
- 18:19Speaker 1: You hear the stories. Even Joe Fleming, who contributes for
- 18:23Speaker 1: US a lot, he had a major accident and broke
- 18:26Speaker 1: his neck. Yeah, he didn't severe, fine, but the doctor
- 18:29Speaker 1: was basically like, it's a good thing you had that
- 18:31Speaker 1: thing on there. It probably would have been a totally
- 18:32Speaker 1: different outcome. The LEOT now has three different styles of
- 18:37Speaker 1: adventure suits and including weather resistant ones, some that are
- 18:41Speaker 1: really good for hot weather. So it's nice to see
- 18:43Speaker 1: LEOT coming in to the industry. They're out of South Africa.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I really like what they're doing.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Pretty small moto presence at this expo.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I was shocked by that.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Exhibitors in the motor space Moscow here.
- 18:58Speaker 1: But not a whole lot Overland Explorer vehicles OEV. Oh yep,
- 19:03Speaker 1: They've got their new Hudson which is like hardshell top.
- 19:08Speaker 1: You can get it as a slide in or as
- 19:10Speaker 1: a trayon model, and they do a great job. Those
- 19:13Speaker 1: are really high quality campers. So that's pretty cool to see.
- 19:18Speaker 1: There was composting toilet company that, like, it's so funny
- 19:21Speaker 1: to talk about composting toilets, but it's just the reality
- 19:23Speaker 1: of life on the road is that you got to
- 19:25Speaker 1: do that stuff.
- 19:25Speaker 2: You're your conversation with Jesse Muller last week and you
- 19:29Speaker 2: guys talked about that and how it really is if
- 19:31Speaker 2: you're living full time. It just makes so much more
- 19:33Speaker 2: sense than that. It's way better in a packaged toilet
- 19:36Speaker 2: other options, right, No, it's really you got the space.
- 19:39Speaker 1: So there's a Germany company called Trellino and they make
- 19:43Speaker 1: a couple of different composting toilets that are the same
- 19:46Speaker 1: size as regular porta potties. So like in this Scout,
- 19:51Speaker 1: I have a porta potty, but they there is a
- 19:54Speaker 1: Trellino that is the same size, so it'll actually fit
- 19:58Speaker 1: in here, and I can have a comp posting toilet
- 20:01Speaker 1: in the Scout Yoho, which is my preference. Yeah, so
- 20:05Speaker 1: I mean it can't you can't use it for as
- 20:07Speaker 1: long as like I will write with a nature's head
- 20:10Speaker 1: or but those are heads.
- 20:12Speaker 2: They take up a lot of space.
- 20:13Speaker 1: They do. They're really big. Yeah, and they require some
- 20:15Speaker 1: additional plumbing for a fan and all that kind of stuff.
- 20:18Speaker 1: So these probably are like a week long use. But
- 20:23Speaker 1: it still has a p trap.
- 20:24Speaker 2: And yeah, I mean if you're especially if traveling North America,
- 20:27Speaker 2: that's all you need.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Totally. Yes, I'm pretty excited about that. It has to
- 20:31Speaker 1: see more offerings. They're a lot more environmentally friendly. You're
- 20:35Speaker 1: also not needing to like find a flushing toilet. You
- 20:38Speaker 1: got to be really careful what you dump into pit toilets,
- 20:41Speaker 1: what kind of chemicals are in the porta potty because
- 20:45Speaker 1: it can really kill those leech fields. Yes, so we
- 20:48Speaker 1: got to be mindful of the biome that we're dumping
- 20:51Speaker 1: stuff into. So I think that those no that we
- 20:54Speaker 1: talk about complishing a lot. I'm a fan.
- 20:57Speaker 2: It's a functional thing, right that they really work. Yeah.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Another thing I thought was cool because I'm a
- 21:01Speaker 1: huge fan of the ribbans. I like the Rivian R
- 21:04Speaker 1: one T. Go Fast Campers picked one up and they
- 21:09Speaker 1: built a go Fast camper specifically for the R one T.
- 21:12Speaker 2: So that looks.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Super low profile to minimize the impact to range and
- 21:18Speaker 1: then because a lot of the buttons are activated from
- 21:22Speaker 1: the top rail of the R one T, they found
- 21:25Speaker 1: these kind of cool like lever buttons that are you
- 21:28Speaker 1: can push from the outside and it forces it down
- 21:31Speaker 1: on the inside button so you can drop the tailgate,
- 21:33Speaker 1: you can open up the gear tunnel and all that
- 21:36Speaker 1: other stuff. So, you know, Go Fast just does a
- 21:38Speaker 1: great job, and it's a made in USA. They pay
- 21:42Speaker 1: their employees fairly, They have a good reputation some like
- 21:46Speaker 1: some of the stories I've heard of how they've helped
- 21:48Speaker 1: other people, even their own employees, incubate new businesses. It's
- 21:52Speaker 1: just really impressive.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I know they've had a huge impact on that community
- 21:56Speaker 2: around Belgrade and Bozeman and Montana there and yeah, and
- 21:58Speaker 2: the other thing about it Go Fast too is that
- 22:00Speaker 2: their turnaround times are great. You don't have to wait
- 22:02Speaker 2: for months and months and months and months to get
- 22:04Speaker 2: your camper, even if you order a custom build like
- 22:07Speaker 2: they turn them around really fast, which is also really great.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Allows them to come in at a very reasonable price,
- 22:12Speaker 1: higher production quality, better serviceability because there's continuity from the components,
- 22:18Speaker 1: Like a lot of these campers are handmade one at
- 22:21Speaker 1: a time. It's basically like old school panel beaters, which
- 22:24Speaker 1: doesn't make them less strong, it just means that they're
- 22:27Speaker 1: more difficult to service. So if you damage a panel,
- 22:30Speaker 1: it's probably gonna have to take it back to the factory,
- 22:32Speaker 1: whereas Go Fast can just send you down a new
- 22:34Speaker 1: paint and it'll mount right up. Yeah. Yeah, So those
- 22:37Speaker 1: kinds of things I think make it really big difference.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but the Rivian version looked really good, just blending
- 22:42Speaker 2: in with the overall aesthetic of the truck. It just
- 22:45Speaker 2: really is fantastic. Yeahs go design.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Even the Scout Yoho that we're in right now, all
- 22:50Speaker 1: of these walls were made by Go Fast, so they're
- 22:53Speaker 1: doing some collaboration with Scout to help improve the quality
- 22:58Speaker 1: of their pop ups. So just always really impressed with
- 23:00Speaker 1: what Go Fast is doing, and I think they're a
- 23:02Speaker 1: company that's deserving of support within the industry. And I'm sure,
- 23:07Speaker 1: what else did you see that you liked? And I'm
- 23:09Speaker 1: going through my list.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Going through my list here too. Liquid spring is an
- 23:14Speaker 2: interesting product, and I've been actually seeing quite a bit
- 23:17Speaker 2: of sort of high tech suspension products around the show
- 23:20Speaker 2: this year. More normal and I yeah, just really cutting
- 23:25Speaker 2: edge kind of stuff. And I talked to one of
- 23:26Speaker 2: the engineers there at look at Spring and I understood
- 23:29Speaker 2: about half of what he was saying how they work.
- 23:32Speaker 2: But the idea that an exactly a hydraulic device that
- 23:36Speaker 2: allows you to replace the traditional tensile steel springs whatever
- 23:41Speaker 2: coil or springs in order to keep your vehicle level
- 23:44Speaker 2: and to keep the loads level and to increase load
- 23:47Speaker 2: capacity in their terms. And on the other hand, they
- 23:51Speaker 2: also look really complicated and talking about like serviceability, talking
- 23:55Speaker 2: about that kind of thing. There's a trade off there.
- 23:58Speaker 2: I wonder for some of these really big trucks like
- 24:00Speaker 2: the f FI fifties and fifty five hundreds, that are
- 24:02Speaker 2: you know, having these larger habitats upgrade that needs to
- 24:06Speaker 2: go into the suspension, needs to go into the chassis
- 24:08Speaker 2: is significant. And I think they have an interesting take
- 24:12Speaker 2: on it, very high tech. And I think I am
- 24:14Speaker 2: I remembering, right, is Graham Bell Is he going to
- 24:17Speaker 2: install some of these on their Defender?
- 24:19Speaker 1: May think, I maybe remembering that, Yeah, yeah, because he's
- 24:22Speaker 1: got that big habitat on there now, right, The Defender
- 24:26Speaker 1: one is a huge payload, but still like where the
- 24:31Speaker 1: weight gets placed can really affects how the vehicle handles.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I think they were saying that the
- 24:37Speaker 2: liquid spring two is adaptable for each corner of the vehicle.
- 24:40Speaker 2: And yeah, it's a pretty pretty high tech stuff and
- 24:43Speaker 2: super interesting engineering going into that, right, like a lot
- 24:47Speaker 2: of man hours, a lot of like high tech development,
- 24:50Speaker 2: expensive development that goes into products like that.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And it's nice to see so many OEMs still participate
- 24:55Speaker 1: in We've got Toyota here, We've got Lexus here, we
- 24:59Speaker 1: have GMS see here. Yeah, we've got on the branded
- 25:05Speaker 1: here and the Quartermaster here. So we're really seeing a
- 25:09Speaker 1: lot of representation of these brands continuing to show up.
- 25:14Speaker 1: RAM has their power wagons and stuff going around the course,
- 25:17Speaker 1: going around the track, which I think is you know,
- 25:20Speaker 1: really important to see fewer motorcycle manufacturers so it would
- 25:24Speaker 1: be good. Yeah I didn't see.
- 25:25Speaker 2: The only one was Polaris and they have got their
- 25:27Speaker 2: side by side and.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Stuff, I think, but yeah, Indian motorcycles here. I thought
- 25:34Speaker 1: it was really neat too, was you know, the Army
- 25:36Speaker 1: National Guard, the Air National Guard was given some space
- 25:40Speaker 1: here at the event. So I just I like it
- 25:43Speaker 1: the fact that Overland Expo still donates booth space to
- 25:47Speaker 1: these really important organizations. And it was just neat to
- 25:51Speaker 1: listen to this Air National Guard flight nurse talk about
- 25:55Speaker 1: what inspired him to go into the military even though
- 25:58Speaker 1: he had a successful career as a flight nurse already
- 26:02Speaker 1: or as a trauma nurse, to get more flight hours,
- 26:05Speaker 1: and he built this awesome jeep and it was in
- 26:08Speaker 1: the booth and but it's good for young people. It's
- 26:12Speaker 1: good for people that are new to travel to see
- 26:15Speaker 1: that there's other options. But you can go into the
- 26:18Speaker 1: Peace Corps, you can go into the Army or the
- 26:22Speaker 1: Air National Guard and go into the four branches of
- 26:25Speaker 1: the military, so there's options to do that. For me,
- 26:29Speaker 1: it was the Air Force and that's what got me
- 26:30Speaker 1: inspired to go travel the world. So for these guys
- 26:34Speaker 1: that I just met that they're now getting to travel
- 26:36Speaker 1: the world and they love overlanding and they're getting to
- 26:40Speaker 1: now see the world because of their their job that
- 26:42Speaker 1: they have in the military. It's paying for their education
- 26:45Speaker 1: and they're everybody everybody, So it's nice to see those
- 26:50Speaker 1: kinds of things represented here, seeing lots of classes being conducted.
- 26:55Speaker 1: So it's nice to see the event continue to thrive
- 26:58Speaker 1: as the industry continues to grow.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. And then yeah, that brings us back
- 27:02Speaker 2: this this idea of all these these Colorado companies. It's
- 27:05Speaker 2: really cool to see them here and see them represent
- 27:07Speaker 2: it and small businesses and the like entrepreneurial spirit. It's
- 27:10Speaker 2: really it's great. But it's encouraging for for us, for travelers,
- 27:15Speaker 2: for the industry, for however you want to travel. It's
- 27:17Speaker 2: really it's great.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Yeah, even just like the Adventure Tool company who's right
- 27:22Speaker 1: next to me. Year, they've been in this from just
- 27:25Speaker 1: about the beginning, retired military officer that now has his
- 27:30Speaker 1: own small business and travels with his wife and makes
- 27:33Speaker 1: really neat products that I've used around the world with
- 27:35Speaker 1: great success. Yeah, it's neat to see these small businesses
- 27:39Speaker 1: continue to do well. When you go to buy a product,
- 27:43Speaker 1: it's a good idea to know where you're getting it from.
- 27:45Speaker 1: It doesn't mean I'm not saying you should buy it
- 27:47Speaker 1: from any one place, but it's nice to know that
- 27:50Speaker 1: the person that you're buying it from is probably sending
- 27:53Speaker 1: their kid to college from what you're from what you're doing,
- 27:57Speaker 1: as opposed to it's going to another country or it's
- 28:00Speaker 1: going into a publicly traded company.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Yeah, a private equity firm or something. Yeah.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Good, And it doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with that.
- 28:08Speaker 1: It just means no where you're spending your money. And
- 28:11Speaker 1: if you could have the opportunity to help a small business.
- 28:14Speaker 1: We've all been there, Yeah, We've all had the dream
- 28:17Speaker 1: that have our own side hustle, and these people have
- 28:19Speaker 1: done it. Yeah, so finding a way to support them,
- 28:22Speaker 1: I think is really important.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 28:24Speaker 1: What do you think was missing at the show? What
- 28:26Speaker 1: do you think I mean you mentioned the motive.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the one thing that stood out to
- 28:29Speaker 2: me was the moto section seems a little bit smaller,
- 28:31Speaker 2: and I think you know it was in Flagstaff as
- 28:33Speaker 2: well in May at the Overland Expo West. And I
- 28:35Speaker 2: don't know, the moto community is always like super vibrant.
- 28:39Speaker 2: They're always having the best time, you know, they're always
- 28:42Speaker 2: like they're always they're always here in force, you know,
- 28:45Speaker 2: as a community, but it.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Seems like I see them as present.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Yeah, And I wonder a lot of that has to
- 28:49Speaker 2: do maybe with the fact that there's not the motorcycle
- 28:52Speaker 2: training that expect us to have in years past, the
- 28:54Speaker 2: big training courses, and whether it's build rigou or raw Hide,
- 28:59Speaker 2: and so they're just not having that motto training any longer.
- 29:02Speaker 1: It does seem like training in general has backed off.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. And even yes, for example, in
- 29:07Speaker 2: Flagstaff there was no like four x four like training course.
- 29:10Speaker 2: They had the four x four like demonstration course with
- 29:12Speaker 2: the Grenadier's and then Ram is here in Colorado for
- 29:15Speaker 2: this show, but that like some of that hands on
- 29:20Speaker 2: training and education is missing. And I know just talking
- 29:23Speaker 2: to folks from Overland Expo that they're trying to diversify
- 29:26Speaker 2: their course offerings among the shows. There's four Overland expos now, right,
- 29:31Speaker 2: and so they had a lot more four wheel drive
- 29:35Speaker 2: to hands on education in Redmond in Oregon for Pacific Northwest.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I didn't go there. I think A Graham Bell and
- 29:41Speaker 2: NUSA Tall were there for that show. Brian was there,
- 29:44Speaker 2: but word that I kind of hear they're trying to
- 29:46Speaker 2: spread things out a little bit so that the shows
- 29:49Speaker 2: shows have have their own distinct character.
- 29:52Speaker 1: And maybe a draw to go to more shows.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Exactly, yeah, exactly. So it's hard to tell new owners,
- 29:58Speaker 2: you know, that have come in the past year and
- 30:00Speaker 2: that are obviously looking to make sure that there's plenty
- 30:03Speaker 2: of profitability and revenue.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Generation from these.
- 30:06Speaker 2: But yeah, so yeah, totally. The educational programs have changed significantly.
- 30:10Speaker 2: There's a little bit more focus also on say like
- 30:13Speaker 2: content creation and working on your social media presence and
- 30:17Speaker 2: video and photography and that kind of stuff. So there's
- 30:20Speaker 2: a little bit more focus on that kind of instruction
- 30:23Speaker 2: unless maybe on say travel, right, like what there's no say,
- 30:28Speaker 2: for example, like Africa Travel round Table. There's these roundtables
- 30:32Speaker 2: that their regional you know travel where you get travelers
- 30:35Speaker 2: who've been there, right, have had the experience, and they
- 30:38Speaker 2: can share some of that expertise and experience with folks
- 30:41Speaker 2: who are thinking about going to Baja, are going to
- 30:44Speaker 2: South America, are going to So maybe the travel aspect
- 30:47Speaker 2: has gone down in terms of educational offerings, But otherwise,
- 30:52Speaker 2: I think there's a pretty robust and diverse group of
- 30:56Speaker 2: you know, exhibitors and vendors that are here. Like you said,
- 31:00Speaker 2: there's just all the whole spectrum.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Right. It's a neat venue, it's really easy for people
- 31:07Speaker 1: to get to. There's plenty of space here, plenty of parking,
- 31:11Speaker 1: which is it's very It's probably one of the better
- 31:14Speaker 1: suited venues of all of the Overland expotes just for
- 31:17Speaker 1: the event, Like it just lends itself really easily to
- 31:20Speaker 1: the event, which I think is really positive. Overall, it's
- 31:24Speaker 1: interesting to see the event continue to diversify and grow
- 31:28Speaker 1: in the ways that it needs to, and that's nice
- 31:31Speaker 1: to see a lot of new innovation this time around.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Meantime there's a little bit of a slowdown, it usually
- 31:37Speaker 1: causes people to be innovative, sure, and to really push
- 31:40Speaker 1: in new directions. So yeah, so they can stand out
- 31:44Speaker 1: that that's pretty encouraging. But there's also some of the
- 31:47Speaker 1: old stand bites like Paul May from Equipment is here,
- 31:51Speaker 1: So you've got like a lot of the ogs that
- 31:53Speaker 1: are still participating in the presence and being successful. So
- 31:57Speaker 1: that's really encouraging to see.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Did you think anything in particular was missing as well?
- 32:02Speaker 1: I was just I did notice the motorcycle and I
- 32:04Speaker 1: noticed a fewer training opportunities, which I really I don't
- 32:09Speaker 1: have a strong opinion one way or the other. This
- 32:11Speaker 1: has become a consumer trade show, so it's understandable that
- 32:15Speaker 1: would be the primary emphasis, and at the end of
- 32:19Speaker 1: the day, you want the event to be successful, and
- 32:21Speaker 1: they know what it takes to do that, and that
- 32:23Speaker 1: means that they may just be making some tactical decisions
- 32:26Speaker 1: that encourage them to do that. But we were talking
- 32:28Speaker 1: about Brian in Pacific Northwest. It just as an anecdote
- 32:32Speaker 1: for those that are listening. So Brian is normally Brian
- 32:34Speaker 1: mcvickers is normally at but he's not here at this
- 32:37Speaker 1: show because he is somewhere about two thirds away across
- 32:41Speaker 1: the Northwest Passage north of Canada on a sailboat. So
- 32:45Speaker 1: he is on a significant expedition crossing the Northwest Passage,
- 32:50Speaker 1: which is no joke. So he a number of images
- 32:52Speaker 1: that I've seen of polar bears on ice, polar bears.
- 32:54Speaker 1: The shore delays to being able to get to shore
- 32:57Speaker 1: because of polar.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Bears exactly goes right when they're in this.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Like fiberglass whole sailboat, which is slightly terrifying.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Yeah, said this photo is birth Yea, it's like this.
- 33:12Speaker 2: It's a legit racing.
- 33:13Speaker 1: It's a legit racing sailboat. I'm just I'm super proud
- 33:17Speaker 1: of them. Yeah, things like that. We're supposed to do
- 33:20Speaker 1: hard things. We're meant to do hard things and to
- 33:22Speaker 1: challenge ourselves. So I'm just really proud of Brian to
- 33:25Speaker 1: find a big lift for himself, to challenge himself to
- 33:29Speaker 1: do something really significant, and of course we encourage all
- 33:32Speaker 1: of you listening to do the same, find whatever your
- 33:35Speaker 1: Northwest passages that we've always wanted to do, and take
- 33:39Speaker 1: the steps towards doing it. And we are just grateful
- 33:42Speaker 1: for the opportunity to share our stories and support you
- 33:44Speaker 1: in your own adventures. So if any of you are
- 33:47Speaker 1: planning your own version of a Northwest passage, I'd sure
- 33:50Speaker 1: love to hear about it. We'd love to talk about
- 33:52Speaker 1: it on the podcast. So you can reach me at
- 33:55Speaker 1: Scott dot a dot Brady on Instagram and how can
- 33:57Speaker 1: people find you.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Yeah, best way is through ext com, my email addresses
- 34:01Speaker 2: on there's Edward's at Overland International dot com. You even
- 34:04Speaker 2: hit me up on Instagram too. I'm not super active
